Steve Perry Gives His Honest Opinion on New JOURNEY Singer Arnel Pineda

During a recent conversation with SiriusXM, classic Journey vocalist Steve Perry talked about the band’s new singer Arnel Pineda , who’s been a member of the fold since 2007.

Steve reached the topic while discussing Journey ‘s 2017 Rock Hall induction, saying (via Blabbermouth ):

“When I walked out there, that was a real thrill. They had a whole worked-up thing – they had a big teleprompter, and I said, ‘F that.’ I pulled out my piece of paper. I said, ‘I got some things to talk about here,’ and I just sort of did my thing. The fans, they were so wonderful.”

Asked on why he didn’t perform at the ceremony, Steve replied:

“I’m not in the band. I haven’t been in the band for quite some time. Arnel’s been in the band for almost 10 years, I think. He’s a sweet kid – he’s a wonderful kid. He sings his heart out every night. It’s his gig.

“There was a gentleman who we recently lost named Harry, part of the management team. Harry was there with me and he said, ‘Steve, listen, I don’t know if you know, but Arnel’s running up and down the halls. He heard you’re here, backstage.’

“I said, ‘Well, where is he?’ He said, ‘I think he’s outside.’ I said, ‘Okay, I’ll come out.’ I walked out and he was there, and he comes up to me… there was something endearing about the way he looked at me. He was meeting, like, a grandfather. [Laughs] He’s got the gig. It’s his gig. He’s doing great.”

Perry isn’t coming back. Isn’t that obvious? He felt he was screwed/betrayed. Schon mentions trying to communicate with Perry, just to say hi. Perry won’t answer. Does that sound like someone who would want to return even if the offer was made?

STEVE WOULD COMEBACK IF IT WAS WORTH SAVING JOURNEY, BUT AS HE SAID IT IS ARNEL TIME TO SHINE TO CARRY JOURNEY. ARNEL HAS PROVEN HIMSELF AS THE FAN HAS APPROVED HIM MUCH BETTER THAN THE PAST REPLACEMENT WHO DID A DECENT JOB BUT NOT THE POINT WHERE THEY MATCHED OR EVEN CAME CLOSE TO STEVE VOCALS THE WAY ARNEL VOCALS SOUNDS SO ORIGINALLY CLOSE. WHY WOULD STEVE WANT TO COMEBACK UNLESS THEY INVITE HIM BACK TO PERFORM WHICH JOURNEY MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM LETTING STEVE PERFORM LIVE WHENEVER HE WANTS TO PERFORM AGAIN. IF THIS IS SO TO HAVE TWO OF THE GREATEST FRONTMEN TO REVIVE A GROUP FOR AN EVEN LONGER LONGEVITY FOR FUTURE FANS.

JOURNEY's JONATHAN CAIN: 'We're Very Happy With ARNEL PINEDA'

In a new interview with Steve King of the 105.3 The Bone radio station, JOURNEY keyboardist Jonathan Cain spoke about the band's current working relationship with its longtime vocalist Arnel Pineda . Pineda was a bar and club singer working in Manila, Philippines in 2007 when he got an e-mail from JOURNEY guitarist Neal Schon who had seen videos of Pineda performing on YouTube and asked him to come to San Francisco and audition to become the band's new frontman.

"Yeah, Arnel 's 16 years celebrating — this is his 16th year [with JOURNEY ]," Cain said. "[It's] probably the longest tenure of any lead singer for the band. So, he's been crushing it for us. He's got his kids on the road with him this time, and he seems really content and happy. And we're really proud of everything he's done up to this point. And we see some years left. There's definitely still some gas in the tank. But we're very happy with Arnel . He's amazing."

Classic JOURNEY singer Steve Perry left the band in 1998 and was replaced by Steve Augeri . Jeff Scott Soto replaced Augeri in JOURNEY in December 2006 after Augeri began suffering throat problems on the road. But Soto lasted less than a year, and in December 2007, JOURNEY hired Pineda , who fronts the band to this day.

Back in August 2022, Schon was asked what it had been like to work with Pineda for the prior 15 years. He responded: " Arnel is just a gem. He's more amazing right now than he was when I first found him in Manila 15 years ago, when he was homeless and he was in dire straits. I was searching for the new singer for JOURNEY and I chose YouTube to look all over the world for the singer. When I heard his voice, I knew that he was it — with no other thought. It hit me emotionally in my heart. I went, 'That is the voice. He is the voice. I know he can do it.' And so I stuck to my guns, with a lot of resistance from many — from within the band and from management. They all thought I was crazy. I said, 'I know I'm right. So get him over here.' We got him over. And he proved that I was right again."

Neal continued: "The show we just played the other night, he sounded phenomenal through the whole show. We finally got his in-ears sorted out; we've got a great mixer in front now. It sounds like a record every night. And he's sounding phenomenal every night. And he's very excited about some of the new direction that we took that allows him to show how creative he can be without having to emulate our other albums, which is a requirement for any singer that would come into JOURNEY . It's either that or you throw away all your hits that you ever had. And what do you do? Start from ground zero again? It doesn't make sense.

"So I knew when I found Arnel that I had found a true chameleon like no other singer I've ever heard. He is amazing. I love him. He's a true warrior."

Born in the Philippines, Pineda has been fronting the legendary rockers since 2007. A vocal doppelganger for JOURNEY 's longtime vocalist Steve Perry , Arnel has helped put JOURNEY back in arenas once again. But some fans were not happy about the addition of Pineda , complaining about his ethnicity and dismissing his voice as a "copycat" of Perry .

Pineda and Perry finally crossed paths when JOURNEY and its former singer shared the stage at their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in April 2017. While accepting the award, Steve spoke warmly about his former bandmates, as well as the man who replaced him. "I must give a shout-out to a man who sings his heart out every night, Arnel Pineda ," Perry said.

Although Pineda did not get inducted with his bandmates, he did get up and join them at the Hall Of Fame induction ceremony, singing "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Lights" .

Six years ago, Perry told SiriusXM that he didn't perform with JOURNEY at the Rock Hall ceremony because he is "not in the band. I haven't been in the band for quite some time," he explained. " Arnel 's been in the band for almost 10 years, I think. He's a sweet kid — he's a wonderful kid. He sings his heart out every night. It's his gig."

As for meeting Pineda before the induction, Perry said: "There was something endearing about the way he looked at me. He was meeting, like, a grandfather. [ Laughs ] He's got the gig. It's his gig. He's doing great."

Pineda has overcome a tremendous number of obstacles throughout his life, including the loss of his mother at a young age, homelessness and borderline starvation, making him an inspiration and providing hope for millions of people around the globe. Blessed with the ability to give back, Pineda mobilized his team to join the battle against poverty and its ensuing havoc on Philippine youth.

Who Is Arnel Pineda?

After a series of unfortunate events in his childhood, Arnel Pineda found success in Asia as the front man for the group The Zoo. In 2007, he was discovered by Journey guitarist Neal Schon, after a series of YouTube videos were posted of him covering American songs, including the famous hit, "Dont Stop Believin'." In December 2007, Pineda became the new lead singer of Journey. His is noted for having a strikingly similar sound to former Journey front man Steve Perry.

Troubled Childhood

Arnel Pineda was born on September 5, 1967, in Sampaloc, Manila, in the Philippines. Throughout his childhood, Pineda endured grave misfortune. When he was just 13 years old, his mother, who was 35 at the time, passed away after a long battle with heart disease. Her medical costs left the family in serious debt, and Pineda's father could no longer provide for Pineda and his three younger brothers, Russmon, Roderick and Joselito.

While relatives were able to take in his brothers, Pineda was left on his own. He spent the next few years homeless, often sleeping outside in public parks and scraping for any food or water that he could afford. When possible, he would stay at a friend's house, who offered him a cot outside. Eventually, Pineda was forced to quit school and take up odd jobs collecting scrap metal and bottles at the pier and selling newspapers to support his family.

Early Career

Pineda's love of music started at a young age. He began singing at just five years old, and had entered many singing contests as a child. In 1982, when he was 15, Pineda was introduced to a local band called Ijos, and was encouraged by his friends to try out as their new lead singer. He sang the Beatles' "Help" and Air Supply's "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All." Although they were concerned with his lack of training, Ijos members were wowed by Pineda's powerful voice, and took him on as the new front man of the band. One of the band member's friends even offered to pay Pineda's salary, 35 pesos a night, out of his own pocket, and Pineda was offered a tiny room to sleep under the guitarist's front stairs.

In 1986, some members of Ijos joined together to form the new pop-rock band Amo. The group found success covering songs by hit groups Heart, Queen and Journey. In 1988, they turned heads when they won the Philippines' leg of the Yamaha World Band Explosion Contest. Although they were disqualified in the finals due to a technicality, the event was broadcast on TV in Asia, widening their fanbase. The band continued performing at popular clubs and arenas around the Philippines.

In 1990, the members re-grouped yet again, under the new name Intensity Five, and re-entered the contest. The band came in as runner up and Pineda won the Best Vocalist Award. After a series of unfortunate health problems in the early '90s, including the brief loss of his voice, Pineda re-emerged in 1999 with a new solo album with Warner Brothers. The self-titled album had several hits in Asia.

After brief stints with a few different bands, Pineda found success again in 2006 with The Zoo, a band that he formed with Monet Cajipe, a guitarist/songwriter who had been in all his bands during over the previous 20 years. The Zoo performed at several popular clubs in the area and, in 2007, released an album by MCA Universal titled Zoology . Soon the band began covering songs by groups such as Journey, Survivor, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles and more, with more than 200 performances uploaded to YouTube.

On June 28, 2007, Neal Schon, guitarist and member of the band Journey, saw a video of Pineda on YouTube and immediately contacted him. The band had been looking for a new lead singer, and Pineda's voice sounded strikingly similar to Steve Perry, Journey's legendary former front man. After speaking with Schon on the phone, Pineda made arrangements to fly to the United States and audition with the band in San Francisco. On December 5, 2007, Pineda was welcomed as the band's new lead singer.

Right away, Pineda went on tour with the band, performing two shows in Chile and two in Las Vegas. Both were a huge success. After a series of guest show appearances and magazine features, Pineda gained popularity within the American public. On June 3, 2008, the newly organized Journey released their first album, Revelation , which came in at No. 5 on the U.S. charts. The album was their highest charting album since Trial by Fire (with Steve Perry), and reached platinum status by October 2008.

Soon after the album's release, the band continued touring around the world with Pineda. The documentary, Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey , slated to be released in 2012, will chronicle the band's "Revelation Tour," and Pineda's first years with the band.

Personal Life

When he is not on tour, Pineda resides in the Philippines with his wife, Cherry, their children, Cherub and Thea. He has two other sons—Matthew, 19, and Angelo, 13—from past relationships.

Journey Preview New LP ‘Freedom’ With ‘You Got the Best of Me’

Journey ‘s new LP Freedom is arriving on July 8, and they’ve just shared their new single “You Got The Best of Me.”

“I wanted kind of a punky rendition of ‘Any Way You Want It’”, guitarist and Journey founder Neal Schon said in a statement. “I usually don’t go in saying I’m going to look for something like that, but then it just came to me, like “Wheel in the Sky” did years ago. It just kind of flew out of my mouth.”

Freedom is their first collection of original songs since 2011’s Eclipse . They created much of it during the pandemic, working at different studios from around the globe. “During the pandemic, there wasn’t much to do,” Schon said. “I spent a lot of time in my little studio at home, learning how to play keyboards and looping. Some of those ideas ended up being songs. So it kind of came out of nowhere.”

It’s also their first album since parting ways with founding bassist Ross Valory and longtime drummer Steve Smith following a business dispute over the band’s trademark. They were replaced by Raised On Radio -era bassist Randy Jackson and drummer Narada Michael Walden.

“It’s somewhat like the sound back in the Eighties when Randy Jackson joined the band for the Raised on Radio album,” frontman Arnel Pineda told Rolling Stone last year. “Narada is producing my vocals and mentoring me on how to do it. He’s telling me to sing it this way and that way. It’s amazing. I’m learning a lot from Narada. It’s truly an honor and I appreciate him for doing so. It’s amazing.”

Walden stepped away from Journey when they hit the road earlier this year. He was replaced by Deen Castronovo, who toured with the band from 1998 until 2015. Jackson plays bass on the album, but he hasn’t been on the road with them this year. Todd Jensen has been filling in for him.

Journey has been playing American arenas with Toto since late February. The set is heavy on their classic hits, but they did play new song “The Way We Used To Be” at some of the early shows. The tour wraps up May 16 in Quebec City, Canada. In July, they are playing a brief residency Resorts World in Las Vegas where they will be joined every night by a symphony.

In the longer term, a biopic about Arnel Pineda is in the works by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon Chu and Joker / The Fighter screenwriter Scott Silver. “I’ve spoken many times with Scott Silver,” Pineda told Rolling Stone last year. “What’s interesting about my story is that I’ve survived two coup attempts here in the Philippines before I went to Hong Kong for 10 years. I don’t know he if plans to tell what happened to me in Hong Kong, but I had 10 years there. He might focus on my love story with my wife now.”

He thinks the movie might end when he made his debut with Journey at a Chilean stadium gig in 2008. “I’ve been implying it to him that we should end everything in Chile,” Pineda said. “And I remember when my wife decided to join me on tour in 2011. We were playing to a 30,000 crowd that night. I was telling my wife, ‘Remember Hard Rock Cafe when there were only three tables? Now it’s 30,000 people.’ It was just unbelievable. It doesn’t get old to me. It’s still so surreal and bizarre.”

How Journey’s Arnel Pineda Came to Love ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’

Arnel Pineda said he wasn't a fan of Journey ’s signature song “Don’t Stop Believin’” until he joined the band and realized it had been “waiting” for him throughout his career.

The singer endured what he called a “tough and cruel path” to success before Journey signed him up in 2007. In a new interview with Loudwire , he said he had preferred other songs from the band’s catalog until that point. “Honestly, I was not a big fan of the song at first,” he admitted.

“‘Open Arms’ … was the very first song I heard from them. … When I became a professional singer, a cover singer at the age of 16 years old, ‘Open Arms’ was the first song that I sang. ... I think my three most favorite songs are ‘Faithfully,’ ‘Winds of March’ and ‘Why Can’t This Night Go on Forever.’ Mr. Steve Perry ’s voice there is absolutely perfect. It just gets me going. When I’m sad or I’m happy, they just make me think about the good things in life.”

Pineda reflected on his more negative moments, saying he was the victim of bullying as a boy and that he had struggled with the death of his mother just before his singing career began. In 2005, he remembered, “I had to resign from my band because I lost my voice. ... It was a tough and cruel path until I met Journey.”

Things began turning around for him in 2007, when guitarist Neal Schon made contact. “We had a good talk first, and he invited me over to San Francisco and I met [Journey],” he said. That 's when he changed his mind about “Don’t Stop Believin’." “I finally realized, this song has been waiting for me to realize that it was the soundtrack of my life. It really means so much to me now, and now every time that I go for something, it suddenly rings in my head. It’s those three words: Don’t stop believin’.”

JOURNEY STUDIO ALBUMS

Released: April 1, 1975

Journey’s self-titled debut album was released in April 1975 and was the band’s first outing into the musical world. At the time, Journey was yet to adopt the arena rock sound that they would later become famous for. Instead, the album exhibited strong influences of jazz fusion and progressive rock, with extensive instrumental solos and complex musical arrangements.

Notable tracks include “Of a Lifetime” and “Mystery Mountain,” which offered a glimpse into the technical proficiency and artistic aspirations of the band. Though the album didn’t achieve significant commercial success, it laid the groundwork for what the band could accomplish. The album featured Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Aynsley Dunbar on drums, and George Tickner on rhythm guitar. It was produced by Roy Halee and recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco in late 1974. .

Look into the Future

Released: January 1976

Released just a year after their debut, “Look into the Future” was Journey’s second studio album. The band continued in a similar vein, leaning heavily towards progressive rock with intricate instrumental arrangements. The title track and “On a Saturday Nite” are often cited as highlights. However, the album failed to bring substantial commercial success, although it was a step forward in terms of songwriting and complexity. Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, and Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals returned for this album, with Aynsley Dunbar continuing to provide the drum work. The album was produced by Glen Kolotkin and was recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco during late 1975.

Released: February 1977

“Next,” Journey’s third studio album, represents the end of an era for the band in terms of their experimentation with progressive rock and jazz fusion. Songs like “Spaceman” and “Hustler” continue to echo their earlier styles but also hint at the more commercial sound the band would later adopt. While not commercially successful upon its release, it gained some retrospective recognition for marking a transitional phase for the band. The album includes a variety of styles, blending traditional Journey elements with more modern influences. The album is a triple-disc set. The first disc features 11 new songs, while the second contains 11 re-recorded classics featuring Pineda’s vocals, allowing both old and new fans to experience Journey’s classics in a new light. The third disc is a DVD of a live concert.

“I won’t stop singing with or without Journey”

Whatever Happened to Journey’s Original Singer Steve Perry?

With the recent announcement that Journey ‘s hit song “Don’t Stop Believin'” has been named the “Biggest Song of All Time” by Forbes, it begs the question… whatever happened to the band’s original singer and frontman Steve Perry ? He performed with Journey from 1977 to 1987, and again from 1995 to 1998 but in recent years has been either MIA or focusing on his solo work.

When Forbes declared the 18-times-platinum certified song the biggest ever, a tune that likely everyone around the entire world has heard, Perry admitted that he was “emotionally stunned.” He got emotional on social media, writing a post that read, in part, “To be part of such a moment as this made me reflect on my parents. By that I mean, though I lost them both years ago, I was so happy for them because they are truly the reason this is happening. My dad was a singer and both of them were very musical. So on behalf of my Mom and Dad, I thank every one of you for so many years of support.”

While those young and old know the song to be a classic that you just can’t help but belt out, it wasn’t always a sure thing that it would be a hit. Perry admitted in an older interview that he felt it was a hit with live audiences but it wasn’t getting enough radio play in the 1980s. The song was released in 1981 on the band’s seventh studio album and was instantly praised by critics as “a perfect rock song.”

Perry said about the song, “The lyric is a strong lyric about not giving up, but it’s also about being young, it’s also about hanging out, not giving up and looking for that emotion hiding somewhere in the dark that we’re all looking for. It’s about having hope and not quitting when things get tough, because I’m telling you things get tough for everybody.” While Perry left Journey because he said he lost his passion for singing and had gotten into some party behaviors, he didn’t give up his singing career altogether. He has released several solo albums including 1994’s For the Love of Strange Medicine , 2018’s Traces (plus an alternate version of the album in 2020) and 2021’s The Season . Unfortunately for fans, he did not go on tour with his newer album releases.

However, he did please fans when he reunited with his former bandmates to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005. Now, Journey continues to tour and play music without Perry. They are going out on a massive stadium tour this summer with Def Leppard including frontman Arnel Pineda, Neal Schon , Jonathan Cain, Deen Castronovo, Jason Derlatka and Todd Jensen. Although Perry is not involved in the upcoming tour, he has some exciting announcements of his own.

In May of this year, Perry opened up about his career and admitted that he signed with a new label and has a renewed passion for singing. He joined the band The Effect as they released their version of Journey’s “It Could Have Been You” featuring new vocals by Perry.

Plus, Perry revealed , “I just signed with a new label. I’m very excited about it, and I’ll have an opportunity very soon to work with these very, very musically creative people. I’ll probably announce who I signed with very soon. That’s about as much as I can say, but I’m excited about that, and I am working on stuff.”

As to why he has been avoiding touring, he said, “Well, it’s a long story. Uncle Steve is up in age, and everybody at this age has some aches and pains and things like that. But it’s a really good question that I’ve been asking myself too. And Trev’s been busting my balls about it for a long time, to be honest with you. It’s something that I’m absolutely missing terribly. I can’t even tell you how much, but there’s been a big soulful reclaiming of this original feeling that I had about singing that I needed to get back to. I didn’t want to go out and just turn the wheel or turn the crank.” He added that it is his dream to tour once again, so here’s to hoping!

As far as his personal life goes, the 75-year-old is very tight-lipped about his family. He said in 2019 that he does have a daughter and grandchildren but will not share any details about them.

Arnel Pineda – Age, Journey & Songs

Arnel Pineda is perhaps most recognized for his role as the new lead singer for the rock band Journey.

Who Is Arnel Pineda?

Arnel Pineda’s upbringing was marred by a string of terrible occurrences, but he went on to become the front man for the band The Zoo and achieve success in Asia. After a series of YouTube videos were uploaded in which he recreated American songs, including the well-known classic “Don’t Stop Believin’,” he was spotted by the guitarist for the band Journey, Neal Schon, in the year 2007. Pineda was officially brought on as Journey’s new lead singer in December of 2007. His sound has been compared to that of the previous lead singer for Journey, Steve Perry, and found to be quite similar.

Troubled Childhood

Arnel Pineda was born on September 5, 1967 in the neighborhood of Sampaloc, which is located within the city of Manila, in the Philippines. Pineda was plagued with terrible adversity throughout his formative years. His mother, who had been battling heart disease for a long time, passed away when he was just 13 years old. At the time of her passing, she was 35 years old. Due to the high cost of her medical care, the family was forced into significant debt, and Pineda’s father was no longer able to pay for Pineda and his three younger brothers, Russmon, Roderick, and Joselito.

Early Career

Pineda’s love of music began when he was still very young. He began singing when he was only five years old and competed in a number of singing contests during his childhood. In 1982, when Pineda was 15 years old, he was introduced to a local band called Ijos by some of his friends, and he was persuaded to try out as the band’s new lead singer by those same friends. The Beatles’ “Help” and Air Supply’s “Making Love Out of Nothing at All” were among the songs he performed. Ijos members were impressed by Pineda’s powerful voice, and as a result, they decided to hire him as the band’s new front man despite their reservations over his lack of prior musical experience. Pineda was offered a teeny, little room to sleep in under the guitarist’s front stairs, and one of the band member’s buddies even offered to pay Pineda’s nightly payment of 35 pesos out of his own pocket. Pineda was also promised a job with the band.

In 1986, several members of the band Ijos decided to start a new band called Amo, which was more in the pop-rock genre. Cover versions of songs by popular bands such as Heart, Queen, and Journey brought the band much acclaim and success. In 1988, they won the Philippine portion of the Yamaha World Band Explosion Contest, which catapulted them to the forefront of the music scene. Despite the fact that they were kicked out of the competition in the finals because of a technicality, the event was shown on TV in Asia, which helped them get more followers. The band carried on with their performances at well-known clubs and arenas all throughout the Philippines.

The band members got back together once more in 1990, this time going by the moniker Intensity Five, and they competed in the competition once more. Pineda took home the award for best vocalist, and the band finished in second place overall. Pineda made his comeback in the music industry in 1999 with a brand new solo album that was distributed by Warner Brothers. This followed a string of unfavorable health issues that he experienced in the early 1990s, one of which was a temporary loss of his voice. The record that just bore the artist’s name was successful in several Asian countries.

Pineda gained success once more in 2006 with The Zoo, a band that he founded with Monet Cajipe, a guitarist and songwriter who had been in all of Pineda’s bands for the previous 20 years. After brief runs with a few different bands, Pineda found success in 2006 with The Zoo. In addition to releasing an album in 2007, named Zoology, which was distributed by MCA Universal, The Zoo played at a number of well-known local venues. Soon after, the band began performing cover versions of songs originally performed by other bands, including Journey, Survivor, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, and more; more than 200 of these performances were uploaded to YouTube.

On June 28, 2007, guitarist and member of the band Journey Neal Schon noticed a video of Pineda on YouTube and instantly contacted him. Pineda went on to play with Journey. Pineda’s voice was auditioned for the role of lead singer for the band, and it was immediately apparent that he had a strong resemblance to Steve Perry, the iconic former front man for Journey. After having a phone conversation with Schon, Pineda made the necessary preparations to travel to the United States in order to participate in an audition with the band in San Francisco. Pineda was officially welcomed into his new role as the band’s main singer on December 5, 2007.

Almost immediately, Pineda joined the band on tour and played four gigs overall, two in Las Vegas, Nevada, and two in Chile. Both were a tremendous amount of success. Pineda rose to prominence in the eyes of the American public following a string of guest appearances on various television shows and magazine features. The reformed version of Journey released their debut studio album, Revelation, on June 3, 2008, and it debuted at position No. 5 on the album charts in the United States. The album gained platinum status by October 2008 and became their biggest charting album since Trial by Fire (with Steve Perry), who was their previous album collaborator.

As soon as the CD was made available to the public, the band continued their tour with Pineda all over the world. Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey is a documentary that is scheduled to be released in the year 2012, and it will capture the band’s “Revelation Tour,” as well as Pineda’s early years with the band.

Personal Life

Pineda lives in the Philippines with his family, which consists of his wife Cherry and their daughters Cherub and Thea, while he is not on tour. Matthew, who is 19, and Angelo, who is 13, are his two additional boys from previous marriages.

Journey to celebrate 50th anniversary with 30 shows in 2024: See where they're headed

Journey is continuing the celebration of its five-decade career with a run of 2024 shows.

The 50 th Anniversary Freedom Tour kicks off Feb. 9 in Biloxi, Mississippi and will play 30 dates in North America through April 29 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on Sept. 29 via ticketmaster.com.

Toto, which supported Journey on their tour earlier this year to celebrate their "Freedom" album, will again join Journey founder, guitarist Neal Scho n, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, lead singer Arnel Pineda, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo and bassist Todd Jensen as show openers.

Journey's tour finds the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers tearing through a set list of anthems including "Any Way You Want It," "Faithfully," "Be Good to Yourself" and, of course, "Don't Stop Believin'."

When "Freedom" arrived in July 2022, Schon told USA Today that the album title was originally tapped for the band's 1986 release, "Raised on Radio," but then-singer Steve Perry didn't like it, "so we sat on it for many years … when we were tossing around album titles said, why not just call the whole thing 'Freedom?' It's for the times right now."

Schon was also sanguine when reflecting on the band’s legacy.

"It’s quite an accomplishment and I’m very proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve gotten through emotional and personnel changes and survived," he said. "It’s pretty mind-boggling but also a lot of hard work."

Journey Begins Second Residency At The Hard Rock In Las Vegas

‘Where are you?’ Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain asks. ‘ London ,’ I reply. ‘That’s a sensible city,’ he responds. ‘Do you think?’ I ask sceptically, thinking about the sky-high rent prices, verging on £8 pints, and the generally miserable June we’re having.

‘But you’ve just got to work on your border a little bit like us,’ he adds.

It turns out Cain, 74, who is the keyboardist and rhythm guitarist for Journey , the band behind uplifting rock anthem Don’t Stop Believin’, is a staunch Trump supporter.

He explained: ‘I thought, “What happened to London, oh my god.” But you know, the culture absorbs it all. I see all the different cultures coming in and absorbing it all.

‘I think London is a big enough city to diffuse it all. But still, it’s noticeable, from the 80s.’

What he means by ‘it’ is unclear – but open to interpretation. ‘Who knows though. Maybe London needed shaking up. It’s still a great town,’ he adds diplomatically, before: ‘Go London!’

I was going to write about his 80s rockstar memories, Journey’s big UK tour this year, and their hit song (which is a banger) Don’t Stop Believin’, which has been named the Biggest Song of All Time by Forbes….

‘It’s been a long time for Europe,’ Cain said, explaining how they exploded in the UK in 1981 but didn’t get over here for concerts much, so their fanbase suffered as a result.

It wasn’t until just after Steve Augeri joined the band as Perry’s replacement in 1998 that Don’t Stop Believin’ suddenly exploded internationally with its inclusion in Broadway musical Rock of Ages, TV series Glee, and then The Sopranos.

Now, over 50 years after they first formed Journey are coming to the UK in October to play at Cardiff, Nottingham, Glasgow, Belfast, Mancester, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle and London.

Festival-wise, after Journey’s manager retired Cain admits he doesn’t know whether they will be in the running for a Glastonbury appearance in the coming years.

‘I think he had a connection with these promoters over and UK. So we kind of lost that,’ he said, adding that the UK fanbase is great because it grew ‘organically’ online in the 2000s.

So does rockstar Cain really think, like those red hat-wearing Americans, that Donald Trump is – as the tangerine man himself declared – ‘an innocent man’?

Surely not, after Trump became the first former US president to be a convicted felon …

‘Put it this way, there might have been some misdemeanors. Crimes, as they’re calling it. But yes, I do,’ Cain said.

A deep irony in US law means that as a convicted felon, Trump won’t be able to vote in the upcoming November election – but he will be able to stand. (Whether or not he will do from inside a jail cell, remains to be seen.)

Rather than see this as a disturbing development in the history of the world, his supporters are martyring him. And Cain is one of them.

‘I think it was unfair what happened,’ he said. ‘It was a sad day for the United States but I think he’s a fighter. He has a chance. They can’t stop him legally. He can run for president from jail.’

Cain added: ‘It will make him a legend.’

In 2022, Cain got in hot water with Journey founder Neal Schon when he played Don’t Stop Believin’ for Trump at one of his political functions.

In an open letter, Schon’s lawyer said Cain’s appearances caused ‘irreparable harm to the Journey brand’ for associating it with a political viewpoint.

Journey is not a political band, Cain sustains, while explaining why they never initially broke the UK.

The keyboardist said former lead singer Steve Perry was always worried ‘something would happen’ at a concert if they toured Europe back in the 80s.

‘There was some unrest in Europe, and especially over in Ireland. And I think that was what kept Steve Perry away was all the bombing and, you know, the unrest,’ he said.

‘He was always worried about something happening in one of our shows. I didn’t get that because we’re not political. We just come and play our hits, you know.

‘Don’t Stop Believin’, the one song that made it in the UK, was an escape route. That’s all we needed to do.’

Cain added: ‘But in the end I think we missed an opportunity that we could have showed up. There would have been no trouble, I don’t think at all. But he had to approve it. And he just said it wasn’t safe.’

Discussing Perry’s departure from the group – first in 1987 and again in 1998 – Cain said the band worked the former lead singer too hard over the years, which also to their lack of UK shows.

Arnel Pineda, 56, is the group’s current lead singer, having joined Journey in 2007.

‘I was young enough to deal with it,’ Cain said. ‘But Steve had to sing all this stiff and in the end I think it took its toll and that’s why he’s not with us.

‘You just have to pace things. I don’t think we paced it right with him. His voice is very sensitive, and he needs time off.’

Cain also revealed that when Perry took time off, he wouldn’t hear from him ‘for a year’.

‘It was weird,’ he said, explaining how Perry would come back and say: ‘Time to make another album.’

Comparing Journey to The Beatles, Cain said they worked much like John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney, when they would disappear then come back together and write a song.

‘When I watched the old Beatles movies, the way it was between those two guys was the same way in our band, you know, we had similar patterns. We had the magic chemistry. That was the coolest thing, it was undeniable.’

Reflecting on their various breaks, he added: ‘It was good to go away because Steve Perry used to say: “How can you miss me if I don’t go away?”‘

Perhaps Trump should take a leaf out of Perry’s book…

Journey’s Jonathan Cain Says Donald Trump Will Be a ‘Legend’ if Reelected in Jail

Jonathan Cain is defending Donald Trump after the former president was convicted on 34 felony counts . But even if Trump ends up running for reelection from a jail cell, the longtime Journey member says “it will make him a legend.”

Asked if he thought Trump was innocent of the charges, Cain told Kitty Chrisp from London’s Metro newspaper: “Put it this way, there might have been some misdemeanors. Crimes, as they’re calling it. But yes, I do.”

Years before his New York trial, Trump was the source of a very public falling out between Cain and Journey bandmate Neal Schon . Cain, who’s married to Trump’s spiritual advisor , visited Trump’s White House press room in the summer of 2017 with singer Arnel Pineda and now-former bassist Ross Valory – apparently without Schon’s knowledge .

Schon immediately began expressing surprise and dismay . Subsequent news reports then misrepresented the trip as group-sanctioned, which Schon angrily reiterated was not the case. ( NBC , for instance, reported that “Journey, the Band, Poses for Pictures in the White House Press Briefing Room.”)

Schon later confirmed that the group had met specifically to discuss the implications of such an official visit and that he’d argued against it – “ many, many times .” In these discussions with management and counsel, “they both agreed that there should never be anything to do with religious beliefs or politics with Journey.”

‘He Can Run for President From Jail’

As the rhetoric heated up, Schon even seemed to be hinting at a breakup . The deteriorating situation led to a flurry of lawsuits , but they were dropped when Cain and Schon eventually mended fences .

Trump’s conviction was related to an alleged scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush-money arrangement with a porn actor who claimed they had sex. After serving between 2017-21, Trump is now seeking re-election as the Republican party’s presumptive nominee . He has not yet been sentenced .

“I think it was unfair what happened,” Cain told Metro . “It was a sad day for the United States but I think he’s a fighter. He has a chance. They can’t stop him legally. He can run for president from jail.”
