12 best Christmas cruises for 2024 and 2025

Kristy Tolley

It's the most wonderful time of the year ... to go on a cruise.

Trade the glow of a Christmas tree in your living room with the warmth of the sand and the sun on a holiday cruise. Skip the mulled wine on your stovetop for some of the world's best at a European Christmas market.

Christmas cruises can level up your holiday celebrations — and are an ideal opportunity to escape the conventional holiday celebrations in place of an adventure.

On a holiday cruise, you can leave the cooking, cleaning and decorating to the pros and simply enjoy time with your family. Christmas and New Year's cruises can also be good options for people trying to avoid the crush of relatives or who don't have family but still want to spend the holiday surrounded by other people and festive cheer.

Winter cruises feature holiday-themed activities for all ages, special feasts that capture the magic of the holiday season and port calls at destinations that let you enjoy the holiday spirit without shivering from frigid temperatures.

It's never too early to plan your holiday getaway, especially as these cruises are among the quickest to sell out. Here are the best Christmas and New Year's cruises still available in 2024 and holiday sailings in 2025 to book now, as well as some useful tips about holiday cruise travel.

Holiday cruise tips

top cruise holidays

Before you book, keep in mind a few key facts about Christmas cruises.

Rates will be high

Expect cruise fares to be among the highest of the year during the holiday weeks as demand increases.

The best prices will be for early bookings; you likely won't find any last-minute discounts. If you do, they might be on windowless inside cabins or guarantee cabins , where the cruise line picks your room location.

Sailings will sell out

Holiday sailings sell out earlier than other itineraries, as people plan their holiday vacations months in advance. Suites and special cabins (family, spa and solo rooms and so forth) book up the fastest.

Consider booking your holiday cruise as early as possible, as the December sailings often fill up a year in advance .

Consider your own decorations

The crew will decorate public areas on board, but passengers often go all-out decorating their doors and cabins for the holidays.

Magnetic doors on cabins are blank canvases for the imagination. You'll find stateroom doors on Christmas cruises covered in wrapping paper, adorned with garlands or dotted with holiday-themed images.

It's best to double-check with your cruise line before attaching anything to your door or in your cabin, as rules and regulations differ per line. If you're not creative, check if your cruise line offers cabin decoration packages for preorder prior to your sailing.

Specialty dining is not advised on the actual holiday

Most of the specialty dining restaurants on major cruise lines have set menus that do not change for the holidays.

Your best bet for traditional holiday dinner options (think roast turkey, smoked ham, mashed potatoes and gravy) will come from the main, included dining options on board. It can't hurt to ask if any extra-fee restaurants are doing a Christmas or New Year's menu if you're looking for a more intimate holiday meal.

Expect holiday hours in port

Most cruise ships will plan for Christmas to be a sea day, but if you're in port on Dec. 25 (or on Boxing Day, as many islands celebrate the day after), expect shops, restaurants and attractions to have modified hours or be closed.

Onboard services won't stop, so if all your top lunch spots in port are closed, you're always guaranteed a hot meal on the ship.

Consider a holiday bonus for the crew

Cruise ship crew members go beyond the standard service on all lines for the holidays, whether it's a kind note wishing you well, a Champagne toast for New Year's or a fanciful towel creation.

They can't be at home celebrating with their families because they're working hard to make your holiday special. While gratuities are often included in your fare or added automatically to your final bill, consider tipping extra on a Christmas cruise. The hardworking staff will appreciate your extra generosity during the holiday season.

Best Christmas cruises for 2024

If you're on the hunt for the ideal holiday getaway, consider these Christmas cruises for this year's holiday vacation. (Note: These sailings had availability at the time of writing, but prices may change or ships sell out at any time.)

Sail dates: Dec. 20, 2024-Jan. 2, 2025

Ship: Celebrity Edge

The most appealing holiday itinerary on Celebrity Cruises takes you Down Under for a two-week celebration, sailing round-trip from Sydney.

You'll cruise during the region's summer season with an itinerary that traverses the picturesque Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound before making port stops in Dunedin, Napier, Auckland, Tauranga and Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

The cruise doesn't call on Australian ports, but you can easily tack on a land-based pre- or post-cruise stay since the ship sails from Sydney.

If you're feeling the holiday spirit, sign up to join a group of crew and passengers to go caroling around the ship. Cookie decorating, visits with Santa and Christmas games are part of the holiday fun. On New Year's Eve, gather for a special party with a complimentary midnight Champagne toast, party favors and live music.

15-night South Africa Intensive Voyage on Azamara

top cruise holidays

Sail dates: Dec. 20, 2024-Jan. 4, 2025

Go somewhere new with Azamara's 15-night Christmas and New Year's cruise around South Africa. Azamara Quest sails round-trip from Cape Town with stops along the east coast of South Africa, including Port Elizabeth, Richards Bay, Durban and Mossel Bay.

Holiday events include caroling concerts, pop-ups with Christmas cookies and hot chocolate, and a special tree-trimming party on Dec. 24. Azamara Quest will time its popular White Night pool deck party to coincide with New Year's Eve. The line has a tradition of seeking out the oldest person on board to ring the ship's bell two minutes prior to midnight to literally "ring out the old." Then the youngest passenger on board will "ring in the new" as the clock strikes 12 o'clock.

Rates start from $2,784 per person, not including $196 in taxes, fees and port expenses.

7-night Christmas Markets on the Danube cruise on AmaWaterways

top cruise holidays

Sail dates: Dec. 9-15, 2024

Ship: AmaBella

A river cruise through Europe is the most convenient way to visit many of the continent's famous Christmas markets.

Your ship will dock in the heart of each city, usually just a few steps from the markets. Sailing with AmaWaterways during the holiday season, guests return from a day exploring the markets to events on board that include tree-trimming, caroling and a fun European tradition called "Shoes for St. Nick," where passengers who leave their slippers outside their stateroom awake to find them filled with sweets.

Unlike most Christmas-related retail stores in the U.S. that stay open through the holiday season, many of Europe's Christmas markets close up shop by Dec. 22, so you'll need to take your vacation before Christmas itself. AmaWaterways' seven-night Christmas Markets on the Danube cruise takes place aboard AmaBella. You'll be immersed in the holiday spirit with port stops in Passau, Germany; Linz, Vienna and Weissenkirchen, Austria; and Budapest.

Rates for the weeklong cruise start at $3,699 per person, not including $224 in port charges and taxes.

7-night Western Caribbean cruise on Princess Cruises

top cruise holidays

Sail dates: Dec. 21-28, 2024

Take the line's newest flagship for a Christmastime spin on a round-trip Fort Lauderdale itinerary that features port calls at Cozumel, Mexico; Belize City, Belize; and Roatan, Honduras. Three sea days give guests plenty of time to explore all the attractions on board, from a dome-covered pool area to a top-deck family activity zone.

The 4,300-passenger vessel will be about 21% bigger than the current biggest ships in the Princess fleet. It will be the line's first ship that features suites with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck. Sun Princess will also boast an innovative new "cabana cabin" along the ship's extra-wide 10th deck with access to a private deck area.

It will be easy to get into the holiday spirit while on board Sun Princess, with festive decor throughout the ship and an occasional "snowfall" in the Atrium. If you're traveling with kids, you can leave cookies for Santa and carrots for his reindeer. Christmas caroling, storytime and other holiday events will help you create special holiday memories.

12-night Antarctic Explorer cruise on Viking

top cruise holidays

Sail dates: Dec. 22, 2024-Jan. 3, 2025

Ship: Viking Polaris

While instinct might say to stop by the North Pole to check in on Santa's operations, it's just too cold, dark and icy for cruising. Instead, head toward the South Pole and Antarctica for a Christmas expedition.

Spend close to two weeks exploring the farthest reaches of the earth on the Antarctic Explorer itinerary aboard Viking 's Polaris. The route sails round-trip from Ushuaia, Argentina, before traversing the Drake Passage and cruising Antarctica for seven days. You'll have a cruise line-provided pre-cruise stay in Buenos Aires the night before you fly down to Ushuaia to meet your ship.

You'll explore the icebergs and cliffs of Antarctica on Christmas, presumably followed by a hot cocoa or a warm cocktail on deck. Afterward, treat yourself to Nordic-inspired dishes like smoked salmon and caviar, along with holiday treats like krumkake (a Nordic take on the cannoli) and sandkaker (Norwegian sugar cookies).

As with all Antarctica itineraries, ports and destinations on the continent change by the day, depending on weather and climate conditions. Rates for available staterooms on the cruise start from $15,495, including airfare, port taxes and fees.

How can i find a cheap cruise.

Cheap cruise deals are fairly easy to find in most cases, and you can begin by considering what kind of features and itinerary you want. The more simplistic the experience is, the cheaper it is in general. On Expedia.com, you can filter for specific features and sort your results by price. By mixing and matching certain features, unforgettable experiences may be available with discount cruises. For example, booking a cruise with stunning restaurants and live performances while opting for an inside cabin without an ocean view window or balcony could be ideal for a traveler who doesn't plan on spending much time in their cabin anyways

What is the cheapest month to take a cruise?

The cheapest month to take a cruise varies based on your destination and the cruise line company that runs the ship. A Caribbean cruise , for example, is generally cheapest in the late summer and early fall since it's the local hurricane season.

Can I cancel my cruise booking?

Yes, you can cancel, but there may be fees for canceling depending on how far in advance you cancel and what kind of booking you have. You can check the specific cruise lines’ cancellation policies in your itinerary on Expedia.com.

Are river cruises worth the money?

River cruises are quite relaxing, with much more varied scenery than you'd experience on an ocean cruise. These ships often also feature several stops along the river, so passengers can enjoy a greater variety of destinations to explore. Viking river cruises are especially adept at providing this unforgettable experience.

What cruises are best for families?

The best family cruises in 2024 / 2025 tend to be Disney cruises with plenty of offerings for kids and adults alike, though MSC cruises are known for their iconic Children Cruise Free promotion. Disney cruises, specifically, are essentially a Disney theme park on a boat with live shows, rides, and attractions with your kids' favorite characters.

How much does a cruise ship cost?

Cruise prices can vary quite a bit, with cheap cruises and especially luxurious all-inclusive cruises available. Budget lines can offer cruise tickets as low as $50 per night in some cases, while the more high-end experiences can reach up to $1,000 per night and more.

What are some of the best cruise lines?

Several different cruise lines have a lot to offer, such as Viking cruises , which are known for traversing oceans and rivers with a style that blends outdoor and indoor splendor. Celebrity cruise line is more upscale with luxurious features like WiFi, included beverages, champagne, and suites with panoramic views. Other top cruise lines include Royal Caribbean International , Carnival Cruise , Disney Cruise , and Norwegian Cruise .

How far in advance do you need to book a cruise?

It's generally best to book a cruise about 6 to 12 months before your cruise departure. That's the safest way to balance availability and affordability. Technically, you can book earlier or later than that, with some last-minute cruise deals occasionally available up to a weekbefore cruise departure.

Are cruise trips affordable?

They can be, and it's especially simple to search for more affordable cruises with Expedia.com. Not only can you filter by cruise length, cruise line, and cabin experience, but you may also sort your results by price to put the more affordable options first on your search results page.

What is it like to go on a cruise?

A cruise is generally designed to offer the most relaxing experience possible. Despite the size of the ship, it's possible to feel the wave. Many passengers report that the movements help them sleep. Additionally, many fun cruises offer live stage performances, several restaurants, and shopping opportunities. When the ship is in international waters, you may even be able to enjoy a bit of tax-free shopping.

Are cruises a good way to travel?

Cruise travel is great if you're looking for some varied fun. Compared to a plane or a train, cruises have their own attractions and can be considered an integral part of cruise vacations. Plus, a cruise can hit several different destinations as well, with plenty of time to enjoy the cruise and scenic locales. It's certainly worth it for a unique experience no other method of travel can match.

Which cruise line is the cheapest?

The actual cheapest cruise available depends on a variety of different factors. Still, Carnival Cruise tends to be very affordable overall, most of the time with great options like the Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Horizon . Royal Caribbean is also another fantastic cruise line offering great deals if you are watching your budget.

How can I get the best cruise deals in 2024 / 2025?

If you're looking for some of the best cruise deals, booking through Expedia.com makes it easy since you can sort your cruise search results by price and have access to special deals. One Key members can earn  OneKeyCash  on all eligible bookings and get instant discounts with Member Prices. Sign up today!

What do I need to know when I book a cruise?

To book a cruise, you'll need to know where you'll be setting off from and where you'll be going, in addition to how many people will be with you and the features of the specific cruise you book. Keep in mind that you'll want to factor in spending money in your budget for the cruise's restaurants and shops in most cases.

Where should I go on a cruise in 2024 / 2025?

Plenty of incredible cruise destinations are accessible such as cruises to the Bahamas and cruises to Mexico . You may also be interested in cruises to Alaska or cruises to Europe for something outside of the Caribbean.

What countries are best to visit by cruise ship?

A lot of countries are accessible via a cruise, but the best include a cruise to Australia . However, a cruise to Australia is quite a long trip at sea and really allows you to take in everything the cruise ship has to offer.

Can I get last-minute cruise deals?

Yes, last-minute cruise deals are often available, and you can find them on Expedia.com by inputting your travel dates in your search and sorting your results by price. The deals will automatically be applied to the price estimates so that the cheapest estimates will show up first on your search results page.

Are cruises all-inclusive?

Cruises aren't always all-inclusive, but they can be. If you're interested in all-inclusive cruises, you can activate a search filter for it to ensure your search results only show cruises that meet your all-inclusive standard.

Is food free on a cruise?

Food is sometimes free on a cruise, but there are often specialty restaurants that aren't included with the general booking that you'll have to pay for separately. Check the details of each cruise before you book in the "What's included" section after clicking the cruise on your search results page.

What cruise lines are adults only?

Several lines offer adults-only cruise experiences, including Viking cruises , Carnival cruises , and Princess cruises . With an adults-only cruise, you can relax in a tranquil and laid-back setting without kids running around and enjoy all the cocktails you want.

What cruise lines are considered to be the most luxurious?

Viking cruises are considered exceptionally luxurious, with smaller ships and larger cabins that make them feel more exclusive, but Celebrity cruises offer luxury cruise lines too. Booking a luxury cruise means you can expect high-end amenities including gourmet restaurants, sizable suites, top-tier performances, massive pools, and much more.

What are the best cruises for couples?

Viking Cruises have much to offer for a more romantic experience. Holland America Line cruises can be quite refined and romantic as well, with an adult-oriented experience that's sophisticated rather than rowdy. Romantic cruises offer exceptional service as well as cozy suites for you and your partner to enjoy that's complemented by delicious food often themed around the cruise destination.

Why should I go on a cruise for my honeymoon?

Going on a cruise is a great way for you and your new spouse to be pampered with luxury while also being able to explore a new destination. Whether you're taking a cruise to Hawaii or a cruise to Bermuda , a particularly romantic experience is almost guaranteed thanks to the sheer number of things to do.

Are there any Christmas cruises?

Yes, quite a few cruise lines operate around Christmas, and you can find them easily by entering travel dates around Christmas into your 2024 cruise search. Some of the most popular Christmas cruises are available with Carnival and Disney.

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

Whether or not you need a passport depends on where you're going and the kind of cruise it is. Any US territory like Bermuda and Puerto Rico won't require a passport, of course, but you also don't need one if you're on a closed-loop cruise. This is a cruise that begins and ends at a US cruise terminal, even if there are stops in other countries on the way.

Why should I book a cruise with Expedia.com?

Booking a cruise with Expedia.com makes it easy to find a cruise type that works best for you. You can use the cruise finder and sort by cruise line, type, destination, length, and itinerary. One Key members also earn OneKeyCash on all eligible bookings that can be used to save on future eligible trips.

What happens if a cruise is canceled?

Every cruise has a different cancellation policy, but generally, passengers are entitled to either a full refund or a credit for a future cruise at a later date. Remember that they may automatically change your booking to their rescheduled date, so you may have to contact them if that date doesn't work for your schedule.

*OneKeyCash is not redeemable for cash and can only be used on Expedia,  Hotels.com  and Vrbo.

7 Cruise Lines Offering Festive Holiday Cruises in 2023

Celebrate the festive season on the high seas with these Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year's cruises.

As if never-ending shrimp and beautiful coastlines weren’t enticing enough, cruise lines go all out each winter for holiday celebrations. These special sailings bring cheer to the high seas with seasonal activities, festive decor, and even more delicious treats than usual. ‘Tis the season to indulge, after all.

Whether you’re interested in dashing through the Caribbean Sea with Mickey Mouse on a Disney Christmas cruise or embarking on a lavish and intimate experience aboard a European river cruise , there’s something for every travel style and budget. Here are seven of the best cruise lines for holiday cruises in 2023.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises, a Switzerland-based luxury cruise line , is known for the distinct modern touches it brings to sailings. The brand is known for its river cruises, which offer meticulous service and attention to detail on a fleet of small ships (typically 200 guests or fewer) — and these intimate voyages are extra blissful during the holidays.

Viking offers a number of European Christmas-market cruises that combine culture-centric sightseeing with festive spirit. Onboard you can enjoy live performances, regional specialties, tree trimming, and freshly baked yuletide cookies and cakes. See the City of Light lit up for the season as you glide through Paris on the Seine, or follow a two-day tour of Berlin with a voyage along the Elbe to Prague. If an American holiday is more your style, opt for one of Viking's Mississippi River cruises with highlights like Creole dining in New Orleans and from-the-water views of nearby historic estates all aglow for the season.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line takes magic to an entirely new level during its holiday sailings. The line's Very Merrytime Cruises depart from ports in Florida, California, and Texas and head to destinations ranging from the Bahamas to western Mexico — all with a flurry of holiday festivities along the way. Merrytime ships are transformed with festive decor (including a 24-foot Christmas tree), and offer a range of seasonal activities and entertainment.

Beloved Disney characters dress in holiday attire for meet-and-greets, and Santa Claus makes appearances on most sailings. Cruises visiting Castaway Cay , Disney’s private island, offer even more festive fun, as the Bahamian paradise is decked out for the season with a Christmas tree and faux-snow flurries. The best part? This is all in addition to Disney Cruise Line's plentiful year-round perks .

Norwegian Cruise Line

With sailings to six different continents, Norwegian Cruise Line gives guests plenty of options for a relaxing holiday, wherever they want to spend it. In addition to Christmas cruises , Norwegian offers New Year, Hanukkah, and even Thanksgiving sailings. On the latter, guests can sit back and relax as someone else prepares an unforgettable turkey dinner. Now that is a reason to be thankful.

Christmas cruises add awe-inspiring decor, live performances, and a slew of onboard activities, like an ugly sweater contest and themed holiday trivia. Whether you want to sip eggnog by the pool or attend an onboard Christmas-carol singalong, Norwegian delivers plenty of reasons to set sail this season.

Princess Cruises

Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Whether you're sailing to sunny Sydney or the Mexican Riviera, Princess Cruises promises a forecast that includes a daily snowfall. Don’t worry — these flurries aren't real, but they have become a staple of the line's holiday celebrations.

After you’ve gotten in the spirit with your in-room virtual yule log, mingle with Santa Claus or be enchanted with holiday classics performed by the Yuletide Carolers. Guests can design keepsake ornaments or compete in a gingerbread house-making contest, while younger passengers can attend their very own holiday parties at the onboard youth centers.

The line's Hanukkah sailings bring extra fun like menorah-lighting ceremonies, festive decor, themed crafts, and a reading of "Sammy Spider’s First Hanukkah." And if New Year's is your favorite winter holiday, Princess has cruises for that too, with special offerings including champagne-fueled New Year's Eve parties and big-screen telecasts of all the college football games happening on New Year's Day.

Adventures by Disney River Cruises

River cruises may have a reputation of appealing to older travelers, but people of all ages are discovering they're a great way to travel. Adventures by Disney offers a range of family-friendly river cruises thanks to a partnership with AmaWaterways, and in the wintertime, three of their itineraries focus on Europe's historic Christmas markets . On these journeys, you'll glide along the Danube or Rhine rivers, making stops in countries like Germany, Austria, and France. Choose a Rhine voyage to see the canals of Amsterdam lit up for the holidays or a Danube trip featuring a shore excursion to a festive outdoor ice-skating rink in the heart of Vienna. No matter which itinerary you select, all meals are included, and you can partake in onboard activities such as gingerbread cookie decorating and a mulled wine tasting.

Courtesy of Cunard Line

A sophisticated British cruise line, Cunard takes an elevated approach to the holidays. Here, champagne is served in elegant crystal, and afternoon tea is accompanied by stollen and other traditional European Christmas cakes. Soak up the splendor of the onboard gingerbread village or sip eggnog as you enjoy deckside traditions like Christmas carolers, mince pies, and visits from Santa.

After you gawk at the stunning Christmas tree in the Grand Lobby, you can visit the onboard luxury shops (like Liberty of London, Garrard jewelers, and more) to pick up last-minute gifts for your loved ones. Itineraries include the line's famous transatlantic crossings on the Queen Mary 2 in addition to other regional journeys across the globe, from Australia and New Zealand to the Caribbean and the Canary Islands.

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

From the moment you step aboard one of the line's winter cruises, Royal Caribbean kicks the holidays into overdrive. Every December sailing comes with Christmas and Hanukkah programming built in, so you can enjoy Royal Caribbean's unique brand of holiday cheer on more than 650 itineraries around the world. These voyages get the entire family involved with a range of activities, like gingerbread decorating classes and an ugly sweater party. There are special Christmas menus and a cookies-and-milk corner, plus holiday classics shown on the poolside movie screen.

The traditional lighting of the ship’s massive tree has become a mainstay of the celebrations, while many can’t get enough of the annual holiday-themed version of their famous Bottomless Galley Brunch.  Have fun and know you’re doing good by participating in a special walk for polar bears on the ship’s deck in support of the World Wildlife Fund’s Arctic program.

32 of the best travel tips for your next cruise holiday

A cruise is a real adventure, allowing passengers to experience a new way of living and also experience different destinations on the way - whether that means touring the Italian coast, or island hopping in the Caribbean.

Cruises have always been a popular choice for families and couples, but they've grown even more in popularity in the past few years. "Since the pandemic, the cruise industry has only continued to thrive with its innovation and affordable offering to travellers," Jacqueline Dobson, President of Barrhead Travel, told us. "We’re not only experiencing a huge influx in returning customers but are also welcoming a whole new market that is interested in trying something different."

Cruises are also a great option for multi-generational holidays with a wide range of activities and something to suit all age ranges. But there's an art to cruising and getting the most out of your trip. These are 32 of the best travel tips for your next cruise holiday.

32 cruise travel tips

Book with an agent.

A cruise is definitely a worthwhile trip, but it does have some extra complications involved - and that's where the help of an expert comes in. "For many, arranging a cruise holiday can be a minefield, especially if it’s your first, so consider booking via a reputable travel agent that can offer specialist knowledge and advice on the best deals out there," Jacqueline Dobson, President of Barrhead Travel, told us.

Travel agents can also help you learn more about things like WiFi packages and getting extra onboard credit, as well as additional perks.

Booking your cruise early will ensure you get the best deals - not to mention giving you the best choice of cabins to elevate your trip. Book early and you may even be able to get an upgrade to a cabin with a balcony.

Join a social media group before your holiday

In preparation for your trip, groups on social media apps like Facebook are a great place to start and will have details on the ship itself and the recent programme of events. You can also check out the COPs (Cruisers Opinion Page) for general advice on the most popular cruise providers and frequently asked questions.

Make sure you're insured

Travel insurance is always important and is one of the most important prep actions a holidaymaker can do. Do your research to find the best provider - there are plenty that provide specific cover for cruise holidays. Take a look at Money Supermarket's Travel Insurance Cruise page for some more information.

And don't forget health insurance

Health insurance will also make sure you're protected should you need any assistance while you're on holiday. Jacqueline Dobson, President of Barrhead Travel, advises, "With the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) being phased out, you can now get the similar free Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) in its place.

"If you’re a UK citizen this entitles you to a range of medical treatment in the country you’re in. While this doesn’t remove the need for travel insurance, if you do end up needing medical assistance, this could really save you money in Europe."

Have an open mind with destinations

There's so much ground you can cover on a cruise, whether that means exploring one country or a European cruise that covers two or more countries in one trip. "Cruising is a great way to tick off multiple places in one go and can often be the best method of destinations that are further afield or harder to access by air," Jacqueline Dobson, President of Barrhead Travel, told us.

Do your research on the ports

It can be a bit of a whistlestop tour when you're visiting ports on a cruise, so it pays to work out where the top spots are that you want to tick off your list while you're there - whether that's a famous restaurant, walking trail or hidden beach. Cruise providers will provide an itinerary of how long you'll have in each place (usually a full) day, so you can plan your trip beforehand.

Don't overpack (by packing smart)

On a cruise, you'll likely be visiting destinations that have different packing needs. For example, a few days at a beach resort might require little else other than a beach, bag shades and your casual clothes, but you'll need more specialist gear for water sports or hiking. A roll-top wet bag is also useful for kayaking opportunities.

It's better to pack light for a cruise - you'll need less than you think. And there are usually laundry services on board if you need to put a load on while you're out there.

Be wary of where you book your cabin

Picking the right cabin can really elevate your trip. If you want to relax and sleep well, you will want to stay away from cabins near lifts or late-night venues and casinos. For those who get seasick, book a cabin in the middle of the ship (called midship) as it will likely be less rocky.

Pack your carry-on wisely

You may have to wait a little bit of time before your bag arrives at your cabin, so make sure you've got everything in your hand luggage that you need to get the holiday started. As well as essentials like your passport, sunglasses and book, make sure you have suncream and swimwear so that you can head straight to the pool.

Think about your capsule wardrobe

The key here is to make sure your garments are versatile. For example, bring a dress that can be worn in the evening for dinner with heels or dressier sandals and jewellery, as well as in the day with a cover-up and sunhat for a poolside outfit. Keep the colour pallet minimal to ensure you can mix and match with ease.

Think about equipment

With so many different places to discover, you might want to think about packing some extra gear to make the most of your trip. Binoculars are a great addition for star gazing from the deck, or wildlife spotting when you reach your destination, while an underwater camera will help you capture some incredible holiday shots. You might also want to pack a lanyard to hold your cabin key card so you can keep it safe and on your person at all times.

Bring your own drinks

The drinks bill on a cruise ship can soon rack up, particularly if you like to enjoy a glass of fizz or cocktails on holiday. Usually, cruise ships allow you to bring your own drinks on board - though you'll want to double-check what the limits are. And there's also a corkage fee if you want to bring your wine to an online restaurant. It's also worth checking with your cruise provider whether there are on-board drinks packages to help you save money.

Bring a refillable water bottle

Water is safe to drink on the ship, but a refillable water bottle will help you stay hydrated throughout the day - especially if you're in a hot country. Plus, it's handy to have so you can fill up your bottle on board before leaving for the ship and exploring a new destination.

Download the cruise app

Many cruise lines have apps you can download before embarking on the trip. Typically these will give you a daily list of activities on board, as well as tours and excursions. Plus some have options where you can beat the queues by ordering food and drinks via the app.

Arrive a day early

Take the stress out of your trip by arriving a day early and taking in the sights before the cruise sets off. If you leave travel to the last minute, you could be facing a travel disaster. While some cruises depart in the afternoon, travelling that morning could throw up some problems - and the ship can't wait for serious latecomers.

Explore the ship

Part of the excitement of going on a cruise is exploring the ship when you arrive. You'll find the best spots for sunbathing and relaxing, as well as the restaurants you might want to book and where classes take place. If you're travelling with kids, it's also worth finding out the shortest routes between destinations to save time.

Head to the pool as soon as you arrive

It's always a good move to pack your swimsuit ready for when you arrive and that's so that you can head straight to the pool and for the tradition of the 'sailaway party' where you can meet fellow cruises and get into the holiday spirit.

Book your favourite activities straight away

If you have specific activities or restaurants in mind, you might want to think about investigating booking them immediately. You can usually book on online portals before sailing, or in person when you arrive.

"Cruise ships offer an abundance of activities onboard for everyone but if there's something in particular you'd like to take part in be sure to get your name down early to avoid disappointment!" Jacqueline Dobson, President of Barrhead Travel, advises.

Build in some wellness to your cruise

Cruises are full of adventure and excitement, but you'll also want to make sure you leave feeling refreshed. Luckily there are so many options on board to keep up a fitness and wellness routine, from yoga classes on the deck to group sports like tennis and basketball. There's also the spa to explore, where you can enjoy a relaxing massage by the sea.

Take the stairs

On the note of fitness, opting to take the stairs rather than the lift or elevators can keep your fitness levels in check. Cruise ships often have so many decks, so getting your 10,000 steps in is easy.

Consider private tours

While cruise providers will offer their own tours, booking a private tour can be a more intimate experience - catering for under 10 rather than the 20, 30 or sometimes 40 people you could be put with on an official cruise tour. Check out ToursByLocals for authentic and personal tours across the world.

Don't be afraid to take the day off sightseeing

It can feel all go on a cruise holiday, visiting multiple destinations in a short space of time - but you shouldn't feel guilty about taking a day off relaxing by the sea. Why not book into the spa for a day of R&R, or catch up on reading on the deck when it's quiet?

Plan in extra time for getting back to re-board your ship

When you're exploring an exciting new destination it can be easy to lose track of time. But turning up late can be embarrassing and a big inconvenience for the crew. Build in an extra half hour just for peace of mind.

Always carry the ship's contact information with you

Just in case there's an issue when you're exploring a destination along your cruise route, you'll want to have the cruise details on you so you can get in touch with the cruise crew straight away.

Consider keeping your phone on airplane mode

Travelling from destination to destination and sometimes country to country can be a minefield for data charges, so you might want to switch to aeroplane mode for the duration of your trip (or at least when you're at sea).

Book a WiFi package

Rather than using up your precious data, many cruise ships will offer WiFi packages so you can stay connected on your trip. Speak to your cruise provider before the trip to get the best deal.

Look into room service

If embarking on an early morning, you might want to consider room service for breakfast - which is usually free. If you have a balcony, this could also mean a romantic private breakfast for a special occasion away from the crowds.

Look out for freebies

Usually, there will be taster sessions for some activities, including the spa which may offer mini massages from time to time. It's also common for cruise lines to have competitions and raffles where you can win prizes on board, adding a fun element to your evening.

Tackle seasickness with natural methods

An inevitable part of sailing is seasickness - but there are plenty of ways to combat it. As well as investing in seasick tablets, you can ease symptoms in natural ways. Green apples are good for combatting mild seasickness, as is ginger tea, so stock up if either of these options is available at the cruise ship's restaurants.

Consider river cruises

While many people think of sea cruises, river cruises are also a great option for holidaymakers, as Jacqueline Dobson, President of Barrhead Travel, recommends. "The appeal of a river cruise is all about getting to the heart of multiple destinations and the accessibility that offer," she told us.

"For European itineraries in particular, it’s akin to enjoying four or more city breaks in one go – and docking in the centre of cities means you can enjoy even longer at port as many itineraries offer overnights. With river cruise companies adapting their product to entice younger travellers, it's one to watch as a key travel trend."

Ask the cruise crew for tips

The crew on a cruise are a fountain of knowledge when it comes to the best places to visit in the ports and tips on how to get the most out of your trip. They might also be able to help you with the best activities to try and which restaurants serve the best dishes.

Croatia has steadily grown in popularity as a tourist hotspot, offering everything from crystal clear bays to cities crammed full of history dating back to medieval times. But with so much culture and coastline to choose from, it can be hard to decide which part of Croatia to visit first.

While Dubrovnik ’s Roman ampitheatres and Fort Bokar have gained fame from their appearances in Game of Thrones , the island of Hvar combines turquoise waters with a party scene to rival Mykonos or St Tropez. Meanwhile, foodies have a lot to say about Zagreb , which blends Eastern and Western European cooking styles with Mediterranean ingredients like olive oil and rosemary, as well as root vegetables and dumplings.

Cruising around the Adriatic sea is a great way to experience ancient walled cities filled with medieval architecture along with lush island gems like Mljet, Korcula, and Vis. All without having to pack and unpack or browse ferry timetables to travel between islands.

Whether you’re travelling as a family or want a romantic trip with a loved one, we’ve rounded up some top cruise options in Croatia.

Visit three UNESCO world heritage sites

Explore ancient architecture as well as golden sands with Sail Croatia

Sail Croatia offers the ultimate break for culture lovers, or anyone who enjoys sightseeing as much as they like sunbathing. The Elegance Cruise starts and ends in Split, where you can tour the Unesco heritage site of Diocletian’s Palace, which is one of the best preserved monuments of Roman architecture in the world.

The route will take you north through the seaside town of Trogir, which is also Unesco-listed, before stopping in Sidenik where you can explore the Cathedral of St James. From there, you’ll be taken to Vodice to admire world-famous waterfalls before having beach days on the islands of Vis and Hvar.

Prices from £2,019pp including seven nights accommodation, all meals and drinks, daily swim stops, airport transfers and a tour manager. Departing 7 July 2024.

Get blown away by the intimate luxury of a twin-masted yacht

The SS Mendula only has 15 guest cabins

Experience the romance and glamour of a sailing yacht that only holds 30 passengers and six staff. Riviera Travel’s SS Mendula can easily be anchored in tiny ports, so all you have to do is skip off and start your day without the need to queue for a charter. Every day it will pull up in a different place for a swim spot, giving you the chance to enjoy unique places for a calming dip.

This cruise docks in two different places a day, so you can spend the morning in one place, return to the ship for lunch, and then arrive at a different port for some afternoon exploring. You’ll see more islands on this cruise than with other itineraries, stopping at Bol, Vis, Hvar, Korcula, Jesla, Milna and Trogir, as well as starting and ending in Split.

Prices from £1,999pp including seven nights accommodation, return flights, all meals and drinks and some guided tours. Departing 31 August 2024.

Savour food and wine tastings with fresh Mediterranean flavours

Experience new flavours and unexplored islands on a hidden gems tour

If trying new flavours and experiencing different dishes is what gets you excited about going on holiday, Cruise Croatia’s luxury hidden gems tour could be your ideal trip. You’ll sail on a small ship with a cruise director, captain and very talented chef who will take care of your every need. In Sibenik, you can experience local prosciutto tasting and visit a family-run winery on Krk. Not many cruises stop at Krk or Losinj on the North of the Dalmatian Coast, so this is a special trip.

Another highlight is that you’ll see the best of what each island has to offer since this cruise will set you up with a free expert local tour guide in every port. You don’t have to worry about working out what to do on each island, as you’ll be guided straight to each spot’s hidden gems. There’s also a Jacuzzi on the top deck so you can chill out after a day of sightseeing.

Prices from £1,921pp including seven nights accommodation, all guided tours, watersports, daily swim stops and Wi-Fi. Departing 21 June 2025.

Enjoy child-free travel and a gigantic floating spa

The 900-cabin Marella Explorer 2 has nine restaurants, 10 bars, a casino and spa

With Marella’s Adriatic Affair package, you can experience the old cities of Dubrovnik and Split, as well as the coastal charm of Rijeka. The eight-day cruise starts and ends in Dubrovnik where you can see the city’s old walls along with the Game of Thrones’ filming locations. In Rijeka, you can wander through the winding pedestrianised streets before taking a trip to the world-famous Plitvice National Park for breathtaking waterfalls. Once you get back on the boat, relax in a gigantic spa or choose from nine different restaurants and 10 bars, including a special Champagne bar. There are more than 900 cabins on this ship and night-time entertainment to cater for all tastes.

As this is an Adriatic cruise, rather than solely focused on Croatia, you’ll also get to experience ports in Montenegro and Slovenia on the Adriatic coast. The price includes return flights, making it a good value option compared to other cruises that cost around the same price without transfer options.

Prices from £1,029pp including flights, seven nights all-inclusive accommodation and entertainment. Departing 4 July 2024.

Beach hop and swim in secluded bays

Experince azure waters and unspoiled bays, guided by local experts

Some of Croatia’s best beaches are hidden from tourists who don’t have local knowledge, but you’ll get to experience these secluded bays and crystal clear waters on a cruise from Split to Dubrovnik with My Croatia Cruise. Along the way, you’ll stop at Trogir, Hvar, Brač, Vis and Elafiti where local guides will show you the best places to swim and sunbathe. In Vis, you’ll be taken into the blue cave, weather permitting, where you can take a dip in electric blue waters. Food on board features local produce, including oysters from the Pelješac peninsula and fresh fish.

Prices from £1,259pp including seven nights accommodation, all meals and drinks, all guided tours, historic building entry fees and wifi. Departing 29 June 2024.

Have a luxury family holiday on a budget

Adriagate offers wallet-friendly, half-board cruises suitable for all ages

While most cruises start at £1,000, Adriagate has options from £625 per person in October, or £825 if you want to travel in the summer school holidays in August. The downside is that this is a half-board trip, rather than all-inclusive, but this frees you up to enjoy some local cuisine whenever you stop. You’ll start and finish in Trogir, with stops including the islands of Brac, Hvar and Vis as well as the historical city of Dubrovnik.

There are no tour guides so you have the freedom to explore or relax depending on how the children feel that day. It’s a convenient way to island hop, without dragging everyone’s suitcases around.

Prices from £1,921pp including seven nights accommodation, all guided tours, watersports, daily swim stops and wifi. Departing 21 June 2024.

Where to Watch 4th of July Fireworks in NYC 2024

    By Juliet Izon

Image may contain Art Adult Person and Landmark

There may be no city more closely associated with 4th of July than NYC , due in large part to the famed Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks event, which is the largest Independence Day celebration in the country. This year, the dazzling display in the sky will feature over 60,000 shells in more than 30 colors, as well as live performances from Tanner Adell, Luis Fonsi, The War And Treaty, and Lainey Wilson.

Also new for this season is a return to the west side of the city for the firework barges. “This year’s Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks display will launch an inspiring spectacle of patriotic color, light and sound from the Hudson River for the first time in more than a decade,” said executive producer Will Coss in a statement. The location change means some riverside New Jersey residents will be treated to firework designs like cross rings, strobing comets, and waterfalls (but no such luck for Brooklyn this year).

One of the highlights of the celebration last year was the use of a drone display for the first time ever. As for what Macy’s Studios and their partner Pyro Spectaculars by Souza have in store for this season? They’re most excited to launch the new silver cascading burst, a never-before-seen firework that features a center kaleidoscope and alternating red and blue colors. Coss is mum on more of the particulars, but you should expect the unexpected: “Our team has been hard at work developing new ways to surprise and delight our fans,” Coss said.

Read on for the best places to catch the brilliant display, from 360-degree rooftop terraces, to river cruises in the center of the action.

Where are the 4th of July fireworks in NYC?

This year, Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks will be launched from barges on the Hudson River, roughly between 14th Street and 34th street.

What time are the 4th of July fireworks?

The two-hour live broadcast on NBC and Peacock will start at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 4th, with fireworks set to launch around 9:25 p.m.

Where can you not see the fireworks?

For the first time since 2013, the fireworks will be launched from the Hudson River, which means the east side of Manhattan and Brooklyn will not have great views of the display.

    Official viewing points

While the official viewing platform locations have not yet been announced, information on their exact whereabouts and how to access them will be posted on the Macy’s website when available. Good news: If you can snag a spot at one, entrance is totally free.

    Observation decks

New York is home to many a skyscraper, but not all are created equal when it comes to fireworks viewing. The observation decks positioned on the west side of Manhattan or at the tip of the island will have the best vantage points for the show. And, of course, the well-situated are taking full advantage of their location by throwing parties. The Edge , the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere, is hosting a bash with an open bar, unlimited appetizers, and a live DJ. And further downtown, One World Observatory is celebrating with not one, but two events: An all-inclusive dining experience at on-site restaurant ONE Dine; and ticketed access to the observatory during the display.

    Hotel parties

While rooftop soirees at hotels might not be quite as sky-high as observation decks, they more than make up for their lack of height with stellar food and cocktail offerings. Again, hotels on the west side will have better vantage points: If picture-perfect, ’grammable spots are important to you, make sure to ask if the fireworks view will be unobstructed wherever you're headed. Some of our favorite hotel fetes to keep an eye out for? Gansevoort Meatpacking will be throwing a rooftop viewing party , with food and drink available for an additional cost. For something a bit more intimate, Equinox Hotel New York is running a special package for the event, which includes a river-view room, bottle of champagne, and $150 credit toward food and drink. And if ringing in America’s birthday with top-notch food and cocktails is a must, then grab a ticket to Nubeluz ’s event at The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad , which will include bites like lobster rolls and strawberry shortcakes, as well as tons of seasonal specialty drinks.

    Restaurants with a view

Manhattan also boasts quite a few restaurants with a view, a few of which are taking advantage of their tall perches to throw some fabulous celebrations. Overstory has impressive 360-degree views of the fireworks show from their outdoor terraces: Tickets include tons of canapés as well as cocktails, spirits, and beer. And just a few blocks away, Manhatta is hosting their Sky-High 4th of July , a summer barbecue with everything from brisket to boozy snow cones, plus live music, mini-golf, and even full-court pickleball.

    River cruises

There may be no way to get closer to the fireworks action than by being on the Hudson River itself. And many of the city’s famed cruising companies will be offering special trips just for the 4th of July holiday. Much of Classic Harbor Line ’s fleet will be running that night, from cruises with Yacht Manhattan and Manhattan II, along with a Fourth of July sail aboard the Schooner Adirondack. For a dinner cruise option, look into booking a spot on the four-level Hornblower Infinity, which will be host to a party by July4th.com; or one of City Cruises’ three cruises (we’re partial to the glass-enclosed Bateaux .)
