Introduction

USAA is a well-respected provider of financial services, including insurance products tailored to the unique needs of military members and their families. Among the array of insurance offerings, USAA travel insurance stands out as a comprehensive solution for safeguarding travel plans and providing peace of mind throughout the journey.

Whether you’re embarking on a cross-country road trip, exploring international destinations, or simply heading to a neighboring state for a weekend getaway, unexpected events can disrupt your travel plans. USAA travel insurance is designed to mitigate the financial and logistical impact of unforeseen circumstances, allowing you to focus on enjoying your travels instead of worrying about potential mishaps.

In this article, we’ll delve into the specific coverages offered by USAA travel insurance, highlighting the key benefits and protection it provides for travelers. From trip cancellation and interruption coverage to emergency medical and dental benefits, USAA’s travel insurance is tailored to address a wide range of potential travel-related challenges. Let’s explore the details of each coverage to gain a comprehensive understanding of how USAA travel insurance can serve as a reliable companion for your journeys.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Coverage

One of the most significant concerns for travelers is the potential need to cancel or interrupt a trip due to unforeseen events. USAA travel insurance offers robust trip cancellation and interruption coverage to protect your financial investment in the trip.

Imagine you’ve been planning a dream vacation for months, and suddenly, a family member falls ill, necessitating the cancellation of your travel plans. In such a scenario, the trip cancellation coverage from USAA can provide reimbursement for non-refundable trip expenses, such as airline tickets, hotel reservations, and tour packages, up to the specified coverage limit.

Similarly, if you encounter a covered event during your trip that forces you to return home prematurely, the trip interruption coverage can help reimburse the unused portion of your trip expenses and the additional transportation costs incurred due to the interruption.

USAA travel insurance considers various unforeseen events as valid reasons for trip cancellation or interruption, including illness, injury, or death of the traveler, a family member, or a travel companion; severe weather conditions that result in the complete cessation of common carrier services for at least 24 consecutive hours; and other unforeseen circumstances specified in the policy.

By offering comprehensive trip cancellation and interruption coverage, USAA travel insurance provides travelers with the confidence to plan their trips without the constant worry of financial loss in the face of unexpected events.

Emergency Medical and Dental Coverage

When traveling, especially abroad, unforeseen medical emergencies can be not only distressing but also financially burdensome. USAA travel insurance includes emergency medical and dental coverage to address such situations, offering travelers essential protection and assistance when facing unexpected medical needs.

In the event of an illness or injury during your trip, the emergency medical coverage provided by USAA can help cover eligible medical expenses, including hospital stays, ambulance services, and necessary medical treatments. This coverage extends to both emergency medical care and any subsequent follow-up care deemed medically necessary by a healthcare professional.

Moreover, USAA travel insurance’s emergency medical coverage typically includes emergency medical evacuation, ensuring that you receive the required transportation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or back to your home country if the situation warrants it. This feature is particularly crucial when traveling to remote or medically underdeveloped areas where access to adequate healthcare may be limited.

Additionally, the inclusion of emergency dental coverage in USAA’s travel insurance provides valuable support in the event of dental emergencies that occur during your trip. This coverage may encompass expenses related to the relief of dental pain, treatment for dental injuries, and other necessary dental care required while traveling.

By encompassing comprehensive emergency medical and dental coverage, USAA travel insurance offers travelers the assurance that they can access essential medical care and assistance, regardless of where their journeys take them.

Baggage Loss and Delay Coverage

USAA travel insurance provides valuable protection against the inconvenience and financial repercussions of baggage loss and delay, addressing common mishaps that travelers may encounter during their journeys. This coverage is designed to offer assistance and reimbursement in the event of baggage-related issues, ensuring that travelers can navigate such challenges with greater ease.

In the unfortunate event of baggage loss, where your belongings are permanently misplaced by a common carrier, USAA’s baggage loss coverage can provide reimbursement for the value of the lost items, up to the specified limit outlined in the policy. This can encompass personal belongings, clothing, electronics, and other essential items that are integral to your travel experience.

Furthermore, in the event of baggage delay, where your belongings are temporarily misplaced or delayed in reaching your destination, USAA travel insurance offers coverage for the purchase of essential items, such as clothing, toiletries, and other necessities, to help you manage during the interim period. This can alleviate the inconvenience and discomfort caused by the delay, allowing you to proceed with your travel plans while awaiting the arrival of your baggage.

USAA’s baggage loss and delay coverage extends support to travelers, offering peace of mind and financial recourse in the face of unexpected baggage-related challenges. By including this coverage in its travel insurance offerings, USAA demonstrates its commitment to addressing the practical needs and concerns of travelers, ensuring a more secure and enjoyable travel experience.

Rental Car Coverage

When embarking on a journey, many travelers opt for the convenience and flexibility of renting a car to explore their destination. However, navigating the complexities of rental car insurance and potential liabilities can be a source of concern. USAA travel insurance includes rental car coverage, providing travelers with essential protection and peace of mind when utilizing rental vehicles during their travels.

USAA’s rental car coverage encompasses various aspects, including collision damage waivers, which can help protect you from financial responsibility for damage to the rental vehicle due to collision or theft. This coverage can serve as a valuable supplement to the rental car company’s insurance offerings, offering comprehensive protection and potentially reducing out-of-pocket expenses in the event of an unforeseen incident.

Moreover, USAA travel insurance’s rental car coverage often extends to include liability insurance, offering protection in the event of third-party claims for bodily injury or property damage resulting from an accident involving the rental vehicle. This feature can provide travelers with crucial financial protection and legal assistance, ensuring that they can navigate potential liabilities with greater confidence.

Additionally, USAA’s rental car coverage may include coverage for loss of use charges imposed by the rental car company while the vehicle is undergoing repairs following an accident. This can help mitigate the financial impact of being unable to use the rental car during the repair period, offering added convenience and support to travelers.

By incorporating comprehensive rental car coverage into its travel insurance offerings, USAA demonstrates its commitment to addressing the diverse needs and potential challenges faced by travelers, ensuring that they can enjoy their journeys with greater security and confidence.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage

While no one wants to dwell on the possibility of accidents occurring during their travels, it’s essential to be prepared for unforeseen circumstances. USAA travel insurance includes accidental death and dismemberment coverage, offering travelers and their loved ones valuable financial protection and support in the event of tragic accidents.

In the unfortunate event of an accident resulting in the traveler’s death, the accidental death coverage provided by USAA can offer a lump-sum payment to the designated beneficiaries, providing financial assistance during a challenging time. This coverage serves as a crucial safety net, offering peace of mind and additional security for travelers and their families.

Furthermore, USAA’s accidental dismemberment coverage provides benefits in the event of the traveler suffering the loss of a limb or eyesight due to a covered accident. The financial support offered through this coverage can help alleviate the financial strain associated with such life-altering events, offering practical assistance during the recovery and adjustment period.

USAA’s accidental death and dismemberment coverage is designed to offer travelers comprehensive protection, ensuring that they can embark on their journeys with the knowledge that they and their loved ones have essential financial safeguards in place in the event of unforeseen accidents.

By including this coverage in its travel insurance offerings, USAA demonstrates its commitment to addressing the diverse and vital needs of travelers, providing a comprehensive safety net for unexpected circumstances.

24/7 Assistance Services

Traveling to new and unfamiliar destinations can be exhilarating, but it also comes with the potential for unexpected challenges. USAA travel insurance goes beyond traditional coverage offerings by providing access to 24/7 assistance services, ensuring that travelers have reliable support and guidance whenever they need it, regardless of their location or the time of day.

One of the key components of USAA’s 24/7 assistance services is access to a dedicated assistance hotline staffed by knowledgeable professionals who can provide guidance and support in various scenarios. Whether you encounter a medical emergency, require travel assistance, or need help navigating unforeseen circumstances, the 24/7 assistance hotline offers a valuable resource for travelers to seek assistance and information.

Moreover, USAA’s 24/7 assistance services often include access to a global network of medical providers and facilities, ensuring that travelers can receive timely and reliable referrals to trusted healthcare professionals and medical facilities, especially when traveling abroad or to unfamiliar locations.

In addition to medical assistance, USAA’s 24/7 services may encompass travel-related support, such as providing information on travel document replacement, offering guidance in the event of lost or stolen belongings, and facilitating communication with local authorities or service providers when necessary.

By offering comprehensive 24/7 assistance services, USAA travel insurance demonstrates its commitment to prioritizing the safety, well-being, and peace of mind of travelers. This round-the-clock support system ensures that travelers can navigate unexpected challenges with confidence, knowing that they have access to reliable assistance and resources whenever the need arises.

USAA Travel Insurance Company Overview

usaa-travel-insurance-logo

In business since 1922, USAA is a members-only company that offers a variety of products and services to active-duty military personnel, veterans, and their families. Offerings include auto, home, travel, and life insurance , investment management, and banking.

USAA travel insurance plans are administered by Travel Insured International, a leading travel insurance provider in business since 1994. In order to get the USAA member special rate, log in to your USAA account and follow the travel insurance link, which takes you to a USAA portal on the Travel Insured website.

We have evaluated USAA trip insurance on five key points: Coverage options, costs, customer reviews and reputation, customer service benefits and financial strength.

USAA Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Coverage options are the events covered by the insurance company. Most travel insurance companies offer a range of options, including plans with comprehensive or lite coverage. Add-ons can be purchased for items not usually covered under standard travel insurance policies.

USAA travel insurance offers a variety of travel insurance plans with a wide range of optional upgrades and add-ons. Each is fully customizable, and they all include extensive trip cancellation options and comprehensive benefits at reasonable prices that are comparable to many other travel insurance companies.

The different types of coverage available through USAA’s various plans include:

  • Comprehensive
  • Trip cancellation or interruption
  • Accidental death

Plans offer coverage for preexisting conditions and have no deductible for medical coverage.

USAA travel insurance offers a wide range of customizable plans.

USAA Worldwide Trip Protector

travel planning with USAA travel insurance

The most comprehensive USAA travel insurance plan, Worldwide Trip Protector, covers up to 100 percent of the cost of the trip in the event of a cancellation and reimburses you $250 for miles or rewards points lost.

It also covers trip interruption and delay, including missed connections, change fees, and itinerary changes.

Medical protection includes coverage for accident and sickness, emergency medical and non-medical emergency evacuation, and accidental death and dismemberment.

Baggage protection covers up to $1,000 for baggage and personal effects and up to $300 for a baggage delay.

USAA Worldwide Trip Protector Plus

This plan includes all the above items along with higher limits and Cancel for any Reason coverage.

USAA Worldwide Trip Protector Lite

The Worldwide Trip Protector Lite offers the same trip cancellation coverage as the Worldwide Trip Protector plan. The trip interruption or delay coverage pays less than the Worldwide Trip Protector plan, but it covers everything except itinerary changes.

It covers accident and sickness medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation and repatriation, but not accidental death and dismemberment .

Baggage protection covers up to $750 for baggage and personal effects and $200 for a baggage delay.

travel insured international usaa

USAA Travel Medical Protector

The most restrictive travel insurance plan offered by USAA is the Travel Medical Protector plan, which pays up to $50,000 for medical expenses related to accident and illness; $1,000,000 for emergency medical evacuation; and $50,000 for air flight only AD&D.

Other benefits include coverage for non-medical emergency evacuation, baggage protection, and trip interruption and travel delay.

USAA travel insurance offers a range of upgrades and services. Medical assistance services include physician referral, medical case management, and eyeglasses replacement assistance. Travel assistance services include return travel arrangements, lost passport and document assistance, translation services, and legal assistance.

How Much Does USAA Travel Insurance Cost?

Costs can vary widely across the travel insurance industry. USAA provides comprehensive benefits at reasonable prices that are in line with other travel insurance companies. Children are covered under their parents at no extra cost, which saves a large family a tidy sum of money.

In general, travel insurance costs between four and eight percent of the total cost of the trip.

How much a policy costs depends on several factors including the length of the journey, the destination, the number of travelers, and the age of the policyholder.

Longer trips naturally cost more to insure, and destinations that are hazardous may increase the cost of a travel insurance policy.

The more travelers there are to protect, the more the policy costs.

Younger travelers are less expensive to insure than older travelers, mainly due to medical risks.

USAA travel insurance plans have no age limits, and dependents are covered for free under their parents’ policy. The maximum length of coverage through USAA is 30 or 180 days, depending on the plan. No annual policies are available.

A 14-day look period allows you time to decide whether you want to keep the policy once you purchase it. If you choose to cancel, you must do so within 14 days of the policy’s effective date or your scheduled departure date, whichever comes first.

USAA refunds your full premium if no claims have been filed under the policy.

USAA Company Ratings, Reviews & Reputation

Customer reviews and reputation are important when you’re looking for a travel insurance carrier. USAA travel insurance reviews are generally favorable, and Travel Insured International enjoys a BBB rating of A+, with 29 complaints within the past 12 months all of which have been addressed.

USAA travel insurance policies are administered by Travel Insured International and underwritten by Crum & Forster.

Travel Insured International earned a rating of 6.7 out of 10 from Consumers Advocate, a score considered to be “very good.” Strong points include financial strength, coverage, and reputation.

Although Travel Insured International hasn’t been rated on Trustpilot, it enjoys an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and the company has addressed all filed complaints.

USAA nets a BBB rating of B-. It’s important to keep in mind that travel insurance is just one of the many products and services USAA offers, including investment management and banking, so their BBB grade may not reflect their travel insurance exclusively. In fact, USAA travel insurance reviews are generally positive.

Customer Service

Customer service benefits are a strong suit with USAA travel insurance. Travel Insured International’s customer service desk is open every day, 24/7, which can be quite helpful if you’re in a faraway time zone.

Also, their website offers guides for how to handle travel emergencies, and their blog covers a wide range of travel-related topics.

USAA travel insurance reviews cite positive experiences with customer service, which is administered by Travel Insured International.

Although the provider has 24/7 assistance, the claims department hours are only 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday. However, you can call, email or submit a support ticket online any time of day, and customer assistance gets back to you when business hours resume.

Travel Insured International’s claims process is a little clunkier than most other travel insurance companies, which typically offer paperless claims filing. While the claims process for USAA travel insurance can be started online, Travel Insured International requires you to mail in original supporting documents.

Travel Insured International isn’t completely devoid of technological savvy, though. Their blog is a helpful online resource that provides travel and insurance tips and articles, and another section of the website offers a variety of comprehensive guides to follow in the event things go wrong on your trip. A strong social media presence keeps travelers informed of news and issues that may affect them.

Concierge services offered through USAA travel insurance include restaurant and event referral and reservations, ground transportation and wireless device assistance.

USAA Travel Insurance Financial Stability

The financial stability of a travel insurance company should be a major factor in deciding whether to purchase a policy. Unstable financial standing has the potential to leave you high and dry should you need to file a claim, and any ensuing legal action can be a major headache.

The financial strength of an insurance company is paramount for ensuring your policy is honored. Both USAA and Travel Insured International have strong credit-worthiness, according to trusted third-party credit rating agencies.

Thankfully, credit rating agencies exist to evaluate and grade a company’s financial stability impartially. They use a variety of methodologies to determine the company’s short-term and long-term financial health, including their probability of default.

Two of the largest and most respected credit rating agencies are Standard & Poor’s and A.M. Best. Most large travel insurance companies enjoy strong ratings from both agencies, and underwriter Crum & Forster is no exception with an “A-” from Standard & Poor’s and an “A” from A.M. Best.

11 Best Travel Insurance Companies in June 2024

Sean Cudahy

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

If the past few years have shown us anything, it’s that travelers need to be prepared for the unexpected — from a pandemic to flight troubles to the crowded airport terminals so many of us have encountered.

If you don't have sufficient travel insurance coverage via your credit card , you can supplement your policies with third-party plans.

Whether you’re looking for an international travel insurance plan, emergency medical care or a policy that includes extreme sports, these are the best travel insurance providers to get you covered.

How we found the best travel insurance

We looked at quotes from various companies for a 10-day trip to Mexico in September 2024. The traveler was a 55-year-old woman from Florida who spent $3,000 total on the trip, including airfare.

On average, the price of each company’s most basic coverage plan was $126.53. The costs displayed below do not include optional add-ons, such as Cancel For Any Reason coverage or pre-existing medical condition coverage.

Read our full analysis about the average cost of travel insurance so you can budget better for your next trip.

However, depending on the plan, you may be able to customize at an added cost.

As we continue to evaluate more travel insurance companies and receive fresh market data, this collection of best travel insurance companies is likely to change. See our full methodology for more details.

Travel Insured International offers several customization options. For instance, those going to see a show may want to add on event ticket registration fee protection. Traveling with expensive gear?Consider adding on coverage for electronic equipment for up to $2,000 in coverage.

Be sure to check which policies are available in your state. You will need to input your destination, residence, trip dates and the number of travelers to get a quote and see coverages.

What else makes Travel Insured International great:

Comprehensive plans include medical expense reimbursement accidents, sickness, evacuation and pre-existing conditions, depending on the plan.

Flight plans include coverage for missed and canceled flights and lost or stolen baggage.

Best for adventurous travelers: World Nomads

World Nomads

  • Travelers can extend coverage mid-trip.
  • The standard plan covers up to $300,000 in emergency evacuation costs.
  • Plans automatically cover 200+ adventurous activities.
  • No Cancel For Any Reason upgrades are available.
  • No pre-existing medical condition waivers are available.

Many travel insurance plans contain exclusions for adventure sports activities. If you plan to ski, bungee jump, windsurf or parasail, this might be a plan to consider.

Note that the Standard plan ($72 for our sample trip), while the most affordable, provides less coverage than other plans. But it can be a good choice for travelers who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain more adventurous activities.

What else makes World Nomads great:

Comprehensive international travel insurance plans.

Coverage available for adventure activities, such as trekking, mountain biking and scuba diving.

Best for medical coverage: Travelex Insurance Services

insurance-product-card-logo

Travelex Insurance Services

  • Top-tier plan doesn’t break the bank and provides more customization opportunities.
  • Offers a plan specifically for domestic travel.
  • Sells a post-departure medical coverage plan.
  • Fewer customization opportunities on the Basic plan.
  • Though perhaps a plus for domestic travelers, keep in mind the Travel America plan only covers domestic trips.

For starters, basic coverage from Travelex Insurance Services came in at $125, almost exactly average for our sample trip.

Travelex’s plans focus heavily on providing protections that are personalized to your travel style and trip type.

While the company does offer comprehensive plans that include medical benefits, you can also choose between cheaper plans that don’t provide cancellation coverage but do offer protections during your travels.

What else makes Travelex Insurance Services great:

Three comprehensive plans available, two of which cover international trips.

Offers a post-departure plan geared exclusively toward disruptions after you leave home.

Two flight insurance plans available.

  • Annual, medical-only and backpacker plans are available.
  • Cancel For Any Reason upgrade is available for the cheapest plan.
  • Cheapest plan also features a much less costly Interruption for Any Reason add-on.
  • Offers only one annual policy option.

Best for long-term travelers: IMG

insurance-product-card-logo

  • Coverage available for adventure travelers.
  • Special medical insurance for ship captains and crew members, international students and missionaries.
  • Claim approval can be lengthy.

While some travel insurance companies offer just a handful of plans, with IMG, you’ll really have your pick. Though this requires a bit more research, it allows you to search for coverage that fits your travel needs.

However, travelers will want to be aware that IMG’s iTravelInsured Travel Lite is expensive. Coming in at $149.85, it’s the costliest plan on our list.

What else makes IMG great:

More affordable than average.

Many plans to choose from to fit your needs.

Best for travelers with unpredictable work demands: Tin Leg

insurance-product-card-logo

  • In addition Cancel For Any Reason, some plans offer cancel for work reason coverage.
  • Adventure sports-specific coverage is available.
  • Plans have overlap that can be hard to distinguish.
  • Only one plan includes Rental Car Damage coverage available as an add-on.

Tin Leg’s Basic plan came in at $134 for our sample trip, adding about $8 onto the average basic policy cost. Note that you’ll pay a lot more if you shop for the most comprehensive coverage, and there are eight plans to choose from for trips abroad.

The multitude of plans can help you find coverage that fits your needs, but with so many to choose from, deciding can be daunting.

The only real way to figure out your ideal plan is to compare them all, look at the plan details and decide which features and coverage suit you and your travel style best.

insurance-product-card-logo

  • Covers up to $300 redepositing points and miles on eligible canceled award flights.
  • Optional add-on protection for business equipment or sports rentals.
  • Multi-trip or year-long plans aren’t available.

Selecting your travel insurance plan with TravelSafe is a fairly straightforward process. The company’s website also makes it easy to visualize how optional add-on elements influence the total cost, displaying the final price as soon as you click the coverage.

However, at $136, the Basic plan was among the more expensive for our trip to Mexico.

What else makes TravelSafe great:

Rental car damage coverage add-on is available on both plans.

Cancel For Any Reason coverage available on the TravelSafe Classic plan.

As you shop for travel insurance, you’ll find many of the same coverage categories across numerous plans.

Trip cancellation

This covers the prepaid costs you make for your trip in cases when you need to cancel for a covered reason. This coverage helps you recoup upfront costs paid for flights and nonrefundable hotel reservations.

Trip interruption

Trip interruption benefits generally involve disruptions after you depart. It helps reimburse costs incurred for flight delays, cancellations and plenty of other covered disruptions you might encounter during your travels.

This coverage can cover the costs for you to return home or reimburse unexpected expenses like an extra hotel stay, meals and ground transportation.

Trip delay coverage helps cover unexpected costs when your trip is delayed. This is another coverage that helps offset the costs of flight trouble or other travel disruptions.

Note that many policies have a total amount a traveler can claim, with caps on per diem benefits, too.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to recoup some of the upfront costs you paid for a trip even if you’re canceling for a reason not otherwise covered by your standard travel insurance policy.

Typically, adding this protection to your plan costs extra.

Baggage delay

This coverage helps cover the costs of essential items you might need when your luggage is delayed. Think toiletries, clothing and other immediate items you might need if your luggage didn’t make it on your flight.

Many travel insurance plans with baggage delay protection will specify how long (six, 12, 24 hours, etc.) your luggage must be delayed before you can make a claim.

Lost baggage

Used for travelers whose luggage is lost or stolen, this helps recoup the lost value of the items in your bag.

You’ll want to make sure you closely follow the correct procedures for your plan. Many plans include a maximum total amount you can claim under this coverage and a per-item cap.

Travel medical insurance

This covers out-of-pocket medical costs when travelers run into an emergency.

Because many travelers’ health insurance plans don’t cover medical care overseas, travel medical insurance can help offset out-of-pocket health care costs.

In addition to emergency medical coverage, many plans have medical evacuation or repatriation coverage for costs incurred when you must be taken to a hospital or return to your home country because of a medical situation.

Most travel insurance plans cover many trip protections that can help you be prepared for unexpected travel disruptions and expenses.

These coverages are generally aimed at protecting the money you put into your trip, expenses you incur because of travel trouble and costs incurred if you have a medical emergency overseas.

On top of core coverages like trip cancellation and interruption and travel medical coverage, some plans offer add-on options like waivers for pre-existing conditions, rental car collision damage waivers or adventure sports riders. These usually cost extra or must be added within a specified timeframe.

Typical travel insurance policies offer coverage for many unforeseen events, but as you research to select a plan, consider your needs. Though every plan differs, there are some commonly excluded coverages.

For instance, you typically can’t get coverage for a named storm if you bought the coverage after the storm was named. In other words, if you have a trip to the Caribbean booked for Sept. 25 and on Sept. 20 a hurricane develops and is named, you generally won’t be able to buy a travel insurance plan Sept. 21 in hopes of getting your money back.

Many plans also don’t cover activities performed under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any extreme sports. If the latter applies to you, you might want to consider a plan with specific coverages for adventure-seekers.

For numerous plans, a few other situations don’t qualify as an acceptable reason to cancel and make a claim, such as fear of travel, medical tourism or pregnancies (unless you booked a trip and bought insurance before you became pregnant or there are complications with the pregnancy). This is where a Cancel For Any Reason add-on to your coverage can be helpful.

You can also run into trouble if you give up on a trip too soon: a minor (or even multihour) flight delay likely isn’t sufficient to cancel your entire trip and get reimbursed through your plan. Be sure to review what requirements your specific plan has when it comes to canceling a trip, claiming trip interruption, etc.

Travel insurance costs vary widely. The final price of your plan will fluctuate based on your age, length of trip and destination.

It will also depend on how much coverage you need, whether you add on specialized policies (like Cancel For Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage), whether you plan to participate in extreme sports and other factors.

In our examples above, for instance, the 35-year-old traveler taking a $2,000 trip to Italy would have spent an average $76 for a basic plan to get coverage for things like trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, etc. That’s a little less than 4% of the total trip cost — lower than average.

If there were multiple members in a traveling party or if they were going on, say, a rock-climbing or bungee-jumping excursion, the costs would go up.

On average, travel insurance comes to about 5% to 10% of the trip cost. However, considering many of the plans reimburse up to 100% of the trip cost (or more) for disruptions like trip cancellation or interruption, it can be a worthwhile expense if something goes wrong.

It depends. Consider the following factors that might affect your decision: You’re young and healthy, all your bookings are refundable or cancelable without a penalty, your flights are nonstop, you’re not checking bags and a credit card you carry offers some travel protections . In that case, travel insurance might not be necessary.

On the other hand, if you prepaid a large chunk of money for a nonrefundable African safari, you’re going on a Caribbean cruise in the middle of a hurricane season or you’re going somewhere where the cost of health care is high, it’s not a bad idea to buy a travel insurance plan. Here’s how to find the best travel insurance coverage for you.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip and not planning to buy travel insurance, you may want to consider at least booking refundable airfare and not prepaying for hotel, rental car and activity reservations. That way, if something goes wrong, you can cancel without losing any money.

Selecting the best travel insurance policy comes down to your needs, concerns, preferences and budget.

As you book, take a few minutes to consider what most concerns you. Is it getting stranded because of flight trouble? Having the ability to cancel for any reason you see fit without losing money? Getting sick or injured right before departure and needing to postpone the trip? Injuring yourself or falling ill while overseas?

Ultimately, you want a plan that protects you, your money and the large investment in your trip — but doesn’t cost too much, either.

Medical coverage. If your priority is having adequate medical coverage abroad, you might want to look for plans with high limits for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

Complex travel itinerary. If your itinerary has lots of flight connections, prepaid hotels and deposits for activities you can’t get back, prioritizing a plan with the best coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions may land at the top of your list.

Travel uncertainty. If you’re on the fence about a trip and have nonrefundable reservations, you may want to select a plan with a Cancel For Any Reason coverage option, which can help you recoup about 50% to 75% of the costs. This helps provide peace of mind, placing the decision on whether to travel entirely in your hands.

Car rentals. If you’re renting a car, a collision damage waiver is often worth looking into.

The following destinations are the top insured destinations in 2024, according to Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner).

The Bahamas.

Costa Rica.

Antarctica.

In 2022, travelers spent about 25.53% more on trips than they did before the pandemic.

As of December, NerdWallet analysis determined travel prices are 10% higher than pre-pandemic. Each statistic makes a strong case for protecting your travel investment as you plan your next trip.

Having one of these in your wallet is a good start to protecting your travel investments and preventing expensive accidents; however, savvy travelers check card terms closely and sometimes supplement with a third-party policy, like from one of the companies above, to better protect themselves.

We used the following factors to choose insurance providers to highlight:

Breadth of coverage: We looked at how many plans each company offered plus the range of their standard plans.

Depth of coverage: We considered two data points to get a sense of how much each company pays out for common travel issues — the maximum caps for trip cancellation and trip interruption claims.

Cost: By looking at the costs for basic coverage across multiple companies, we determined an average cost for shoppers to benchmark plan prices against.

Customizability: While standard plans can cover a lot of ground, sometimes you need something a little more personal.

Customer satisfaction. Using data from Squaremouth when available, and Google Reviews as a backup, we can give kudos to companies with better track records from their clients.

No, it doesn’t necessarily get more expensive the longer you wait to purchase. However, as you put off buying insurance, you may lose access to potential plans and coverage options.

In general, buying travel insurance within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

But, generally, many plans do allow you to buy coverage quite close to your departure date.

To get the most out of your travel insurance plan, buy it soon after making your initial prepayment or deposit to ensure you have access to the biggest menu of plans possible.

Select a plan that’s comprehensive enough to cover the travel scenarios you’re most concerned about or likely to encounter but not too expensive or laden with protections you’d never likely need.

Whatever your coverage, thoroughly review the plan so you understand what’s covered and what’s not, plus how to adhere to the plan’s rules for making a claim.

Travelers frequently use phrases like “trip insurance” and “travel insurance,” as well as “trip protection,” interchangeably, but they do mean different things, according to Stan Sandberg, founder of insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com.

Trip insurance, or trip protection, generally refers to predeparture (or preevent) coverage if you need to cancel. You may see these plans sold by airlines, online travel agencies or even ticketed event sellers.

“You could refer to it as the portion that protects the investment in the trip,” Sandberg says.

A travel insurance plan typically includes that — plus more comprehensive benefits to protect you during your trip, from medical coverage to trip delay and lost baggage protections, and many more elements, depending on the plan.

Though travel insurance is typically not required for international trips, your personal circumstances will play a key role in whether it’s a good investment.

For instance, young, healthy travelers with few prepaid trip expenses embarking on a relatively risk-free trip may not see a need to buy a plan.

Older travelers with complicated itineraries who are visiting destinations where they could potentially fall ill or get injured — or who could encounter bad weather or some other disrupting factor along the way — may want to buy coverage.

Consider a few key questions:

How well would your health insurance plan cover you if you needed to visit a hospital overseas?

How much did you prepay for a hotel or rental car?

How much money would you be out if weather or some other flight issue derailed your itinerary?

Could you afford an unexpected night in a city where you have a connecting flight?

Do you already have a credit card that provides some travel protections?

Your answers to these questions can help you decide whether you need travel insurance for your international trip.

In general, buying travel insurance

within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit

for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

Having enjoyed USAA coverage since the early 1960s, I am considering using Travel Insured to cover a Holland American Alaska cruise-tour beginning in September 2011.

Comments on product quality, comparative cost etc., would be most appreciated.

We have used Travel Insured International through USAA for the last 7 years.

The first time we insured through them, I fell ill on the cruise and had two infirmary visits during which the ship's physician ran blood and urine tests, and gave me a 10 day supply of an antibiotic. We were billed over $500. I asked for and received a copy of the infirmary documents, and filed a claim upon returning home. TII sent a check reimbursing us in full within two weeks with no hassle whatsoever.

Suggestion: go to TII's website without using the USAA portal and get a quote. Then get a quote using the USAA portal and you should see the savings. I have not compared their premiums with other trip insurers, but based on how they processed my claim, (that is where the rubber meets the road in my book), their coverage and customer service, I have been pleased. Hope this helps! :)

Like most companies, guess we won't know how good their service/product is until we need to file a claim. Thanks for the recommendation! Have 3 questions...and thanks in advance

Is the premium per person or per cruise (total amount) since we tend to travel together?

How soon do we have to purchase (30, 60, or 90 days after deposit)?

Can we purchase prior to final payment is due?

Have 3 questions...and thanks in advance   Is the premium per person or per cruise (total amount) since we tend to travel together? Per person for amount wanting coverage. Such as cruise per person is $600. Airfare per person is $600. Total NON REFUNDABLE cost to traveller is $1200. However much a policy is to cover a person for this trip.   How soon do we have to purchase (30, 60, or 90 days after deposit)? You want to cover pre-existing medical conditions? Usually you MUST purchase the policy within 14 days of making initial deposit for travel.   Can we purchase prior to final payment is due? Yes, you may

Hope some of this helps. Important to read YOUR policy. Each and every policy differes. There are some basic generalities, but no one policy is exactly the same. All cars are not the same. All Fords are not the same. All Ford trucks are not the same.

We've used Travel Insured Int'l through USAA for a few trips. The first trip was a HUGE disaster when we forfieted cruise fares for five people out of Rome when my mother in law came down with cancer just before we left. Travel insured reimbursed us and we came out unscathed. That was a success story.

two years ago we were effected by the volcano erupting in Europe when all of the airlines were grounded. We missed our plane because we could NOT get through the throng at the airport to check in for our flight, stranding us. Lufthansa, subsequently apologized and refunded our ticket. We ended up having to rent cars, beg borrow and steal our way to the port of departure in order to get back to the US. Every mode of transport was swamped, trains, buses rental cars.

Our additional expense suffered as a result of that volcano erupting (including missed airline flights, prepaid hotels we couldn't get to, a rental car from Nice to Torino to catch a fiight home - (and a $700 "drop off fee") came to nearly $6,000. Travel insured refused to pay our claim saying the flight we were booked on actually took off (the first flight to FLY in ten days) and it was our fault for missing it. We fought them for a year. I finally gave up. I won't use them again and have made my displeasure known to USAA.

I've got to admit that I wouldn't pay that claim either but that's neither here nor there.

You should go here and file a complaint with the Texas Department of Insurance:

http://www.tdi.texas.gov/consumer/complfrm.html

They will investigate the matter and if they agree with you you will get paid. If they don't, at least you'll know that Travel Insured made the correct decision regarding your claim according to the plan wording. There's no cost to you (other than the taxes you've already paid) and it's pretty painless if you've still got your receipts and such. For $6K I'd spend the half hour it will take to file the complaint and see what happens.

6rugrats

I don't know why you would be reimbursed either, as the flight took off, but I'd certainly file a complaint and try. However, if this was two years ago, it may be too late.

I would add that many people seem to expect that trip insurance is a comprehensive insurance policy, and are so disappointed in the insurers when they discover that trip insurance is specific, NAMED perils only. If it is not named in the policy, it is not covered.

If anyone is reading this and does not know that, please make sure that you get the policy DOC or get someone to explain it to you before you purchase.

  • 1 year later...

We bought the Travel Insured policy with the USAA discount for our recent cruise. It was $20-50 less expensive than similar products and provided a but better coverage.

As luck would have it, my wife suffered a gallbladder attack and needed surgery just days before our scheduled Christmas departure. Needless to say, we had to cancel the cruise ("Worst Christmas - EVER!" according to my 10-year-old... and I can't say that I don't agree with him.)

We immediately reported the claim online and took steps to cancel and recover what we could. We then filed the claim and supporting documentation shortly after her discharge. We just received our claim check (for the full claim) two weeks to the dail we mailed off the claim.

I was pleasantly surprised by the speed with which the claim was processed an the lack of haggling over paperwork. - we provided what was outlined in the claims procedure and they paid promptly. Given the stress of the illness and of disappointing my son, I couldn't have asked for a better experience from Travel Insured.

  • 2 weeks later...

Took out trip insurance through USAA June 2010 for a Nile cruise scheduled for February 2011. Trip was cancelled two weeks prior to departure when Delta airlines cancelled our flight, and Uniworld cancelled the cruise. Contacted the insurance company to see if I could get a refund since there was no longer a trip to insure, and after some fussing, got a refund of the premiums!

We are using USAA for the first time to insure our trip to Jamaica. I was googling USAA travel insurance reviews and came upon yours. I am curious if you followed up with a greivance on this? I would think that your flight was "interupted" and would fall under that trip intruption clause due to the chaos at the airport delaying you getting to the gate.

This person's flight was not "interrupted". They just didn't get to the airport with enough time to make their flight. I don't think not getting to the airport with enough time to get through security is covered; I would think the insurance company would say any reasonable person would know that it would take extra time due to these circumstance.

I was able to reach the insurance company easily by phone without a long wait. They were able to help me move the dates of the policy and add to coverage easily. They answered coverage questions easily. It was a pleasurable and easy process,

It’s a complicated medical issue with care provided by St Michael Hospital in Dublin. St Michaels could not provide the basic medical tests/scans I needed to obtain an accurate medical diagnosis. I felt I had no choice but to check out and fly home to the US to receive proper medical care.

Travel Insured said they probably would not cover my hospitalization in Dublin.

I am still being treated for my medical issue, once my care is complete I will pursue obtaining all the records and filing a claim.

Website was easy to use and customer service was always available, polite and helpful. Answered any and all questions.

Thank you for the prompt servuce

Claims process was pretty straightforward and they ended up covering a hotel stay that we missed due to our departing flight being cancelled.

I filed a claim and was paid in less than 48 hours. No problems. Great service.

Waiting to hear back about my claim. You guys seem to be dragging your feet.

The insurance company did not think the document I turned in was sufficient. It was in Dutch, so I have no idea what it said, but it was the only documentation I could provide. Also, I purchased this insurance because Medicare and supplements don’t cover foreign medical charges, but they expected me to submit this charge to my supplement anyway—which seems like a delay tactic. I was very dissatisfied with the service.

It is hard to compare so many offerings, especially when I don't understand the minute differences in coverage. The representatives always help me make a decision and came up with different ways to meet the variety of needs that we had.

I don’t know yet. I filed the claim online and so far have not heard from anyone. It has only been a couple of days.

USAA auto insurance review 2024

Usaa has affordable prices and strong customer service, but it's not available to everyone..

thumbnail

USAA only sells auto insurance to active-duty military members, veterans and their immediate family members, but it's one of CNBC Select's top picks for coverage in a variety of categories. Its rates for both comprehensive and liability-only policies are among the lowest in the market, and USAA routinely earns high praise for customer satisfaction. We love that USAA has offerings tailored to the military community— including nationwide availability, 24/7 customer service, and discounts if you are deployed and not driving and for storing your vehicle on-base.

Is USAA car insurance right for me?

The upside and downside to getting car insurance from USAA .

  • Cheapest policies for liability-only coverage. USAA is over 30% less than the national average
  • Stellar customer satisfaction. Some of the top scores on J.D. Power's customer surveys.
  • No penalty for paying monthly. Unlike other insurers, USAA doesn't charge more if you pay your premiums monthly rather than per term.
  • Limited eligibility . Policies are limited to military families and veterans.
  • No brick-and-mortar offices. Customer service is not available on Sundays or holidays.
  • No gap insurance . USAA offers car replacement assistance, which can pay more than your car's actual cash value but is more expensive than gap insurance .

To get a policy, you'll need to join USAA . Membership is typically limited to:

  • Active duty officers and enlisted personnel
  • National Guard/Reserve officers and enlisted personnel
  • Officer candidates in commissioning programs
  • Retired or separated military personnel
  • Children and spouses of current USAA members

Separated military personnel must have received an Honorable Discharge or better.

Type of USAA car insurance

USAA is available to military families and veterans in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. In addition to automobiles, policies are available for motorcycles, motorhomes, boats, bicycles and other vehicles.

Basic coverage

Collectively known as full coverage car insurance , these policies are typically required if you lease or finance your car.

  • Liability: the minimum coverage allowed in most states, liability insurance pays for damages if you are at fault for an accident.
  • Collision : Pays to repair or replace your vehicle after an accident.
  • Comprehensive: Pays for damages or losses not caused by a collision, including theft, weather damage and hitting an animal.

Additional coverage

These policies may be required in some states and optional or unavailable in others.

  • Car replacement assistance: While gap insurance covers the difference between what's owed on a vehicle and what it's worth, this policy can pay out 120% of a car's cash value if it's totaled or stolen.
  • Accident forgiveness: If you are accident-free for at least five years, your USAA rates won't increase because of one at-fault accident.
  • Medical payments insurance: Also known as MedPay, this covers medical bills for you, your passengers and any pedestrians, regardless of fault.
  • Personal injury protection: PIP, or no-fault insurance, can cover lost wages, child care and even funeral costs stemming from an accident.
  • Roadside service : Get help with jump starts, fuel delivery, lockouts, flat tires, towing and winching.
  • Rental car insurance: If your vehicle is damaged in a covered accident, USAA will reimburse the cost of a rental while it's being repaired.
  • Rideshare insurance: Rideshare companies usually only cover drivers after they accept a ride request. This add-on expands coverage to any time you're logged on to the rideshare app, even if you're waiting for a request.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance: Covers repairs and medical bills if you are in an accident with a driver with little or no insurance. (Required in about half of U.S. states)

USAA 's rates are well below average: A 40-year-old male with good credit and a clean driving record will pay an average of $1,709 a year for full coverage and $435 for minimum coverage. That's compared to a national average of $2,299 for full coverage and $637 for liability only. Your personalized quote may vary, however, based on your age, location, driving history and many other factors.

High-risk drivers

People with speeding tickets and at-fault accidents typically pay more for insurance. USAA's rates are lower than typical for high-risk drivers and it will also consider drivers with DUIs, which some insurers won't.

USAA offers many money-saving discounts. Not all are available in all states and some policies may not be combined.

  • Anti-theft devices: Discount for installing a car alarm or other security systems .
  • Automatic payments: Save up to 3% by paying premiums through autopay.
  • Basic driver training: Eligible drivers can save after completing a basic driver training course.
  • Defensive driver training: Discount for completing an approved defensive driving course.
  • Deployment/storing : Get up to 60% off if you store your vehicle during deployment (not available in Hawaii, North Carolina or Virginia).
  • Good student : Drivers under 25 who maintain a B or better grade average can get up to 10% off.
  • Loyalty: Discount of up to 10% after remaining a policyholder for three years

  • Multi-policy: Customers who bundle USAA home and auto insurance can save up to 15%
  • Military on-base : Get up to 15% off comprehensive coverage if you garage your car on a military installation.
  • Newer vehicle : Discount for vehicles that are no more than three years old.
  • Pay as You Drive : Aimed at people who don't drive often, this pay-per-mile plan combines a fixed lower base rate with a variable rate determined by how much and how safely you drive.
  • Safe driving : Discount for maintaining a good driving record for at least five years
  • SafePilot: Let USAA's usage-based insurance app track your driving habits and get up to 30% off for good behavior behind the wheel. (Not available in California, Delaware or New Jersey.)
  • MyUSAA Legacy discount: Earn up to 10% off if you were on your parent's USAA insurance and take over as the new policyholder. Available to drivers under 25 who haven't had any major violations in the past three years.

Compare prices for car insurance

USAA is consistently praised for customer satisfaction. It scored 711 out of a possible 1,000 points on J.D. Power's 2024 customer survey , well above the industry average of 676 . In a separate survey of auto insurance claims , USAA scored 900 out of 1,000, compared to an average of 878. The Better Business Bureau gave USAA its highest grade, an A+, based on information about its interactions with the public, including customer complaints.

The company has also received high scores from credit rating agencies like A.M. Best and S&P Global , a testament to its financial strength and a good indicator of its ability to pay on claims.

Though it was founded by Army officers to insure their vehicles, USAA offers many other kinds of insurance, including:

  • Homeowners insurance
  • Renters insurance
  • Condo insurance
  • Flood insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Umbrella insurance
  • Long-term care insurance
  • Business insurance
  • Pet insurance through Embrace

Customers who bundle home and auto policies can save up to 15%. USAA also offers banking and credit products, including credit cards and auto loans .

CNBC Select chose USAA as a top pick for:

How does usaa compare to other car insurance, usaa vs. state farm, state farm auto insurance.

State farm is one of the largest auto insurers based on market share and has an excellent reputation for customer satisfaction. It offers 13 discounts, including ones for safe driving and young drivers.

Read our State Farm Auto Insurance review.

Both State Farm and USAA made CNBC Select's best car insurance list , but USAA is tops for price. The average annual premium for full coverage is $1,709, compared to $2,406 with State Farm.

If you're an active-duty service member, USAA has discounts for parking your car on-base or storing it during deployment. State Farm, on the other hand, doesn't have any specific military discount.

Both companies offer accident forgiveness, but USAA only requires drivers to be accident-free for five years, compared to nine years for State Farm.

USAA vs. Geico

Geico auto insurance.

Geico coverage and services are available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and there are 16 different types of discounts available. In addition to the standard coverage options, Geico offers various optional add-ons, such as emergency roadside assistance, rental car reimbursement and mechanical breakdown insurance.

Read our Geico Auto Insurance review.

In a price comparison, Geico and USAA are close contenders: Geico comes in at $1,782 for 12 months of full coverage, while USAA is $1,709. Geico does offer a military discount of up to 15%, which could give it the edge depending on your circumstances.

However, Geico ranked well below average for both customer service and claims satisfaction.

How do I buy car insurance from USAA?

You'll need to be a current or former service member or part of a military family to buy USAA auto insurance. You can get quotes or buy a policy online, but you'll need to provide information about your military status, including branch, rank and dates of service. You'll also be asked about your driving history, including:

  • Driver's license number
  • Make, model, year and Vehicle Identification Number for the car(s) you want to insure
  • Information on any tickets, at-fault accidents or DUI convictions.

You can also apply over the phone, but USAA doesn't have 24/7 customer service. Representatives can be reached at 800-531-8722, Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT. (Customer service is not available on Sundays or major holidays.)

There is a live chat option on the USAA website, where an agent will answer questions about coverage. On the USAA mobile app, you can file and track claims, get proof of insurance, add drivers and vehicles to your policy, pay bills and request roadside assistance.

If you're a veteran or part of a military family, seriously consider USAA . It has some of the best rates for both full and liability-only coverage and multiple discounts that can lower your premium even more.

Best of all, since USAA is available in all 50 U.S. states, you can scratch finding new insurance off your to-do list if your home base changes.

Is USAA only for members of the military?

USAA is primarily aimed at active-duty service members, veterans and their spouses. Children of USAA members, including adult children, may be eligible for membership.

Does USAA insurance cover rental cars?

If your vehicle is damaged in a covered accident, USAA will typically reimburse the cost of a rental car. Check with your agent for coverage limits.

How much is USAA car insurance per year?

Full coverage for a 40-year-old male with good credit and a good driving record costs an average of $1,709 a year. A liability-only policy with USAA averages $435 a year.

Younger people have no waiting period for benefits. For applicants over age 45, AAA pays out 130% of the premiums paid up to the date of death for the first two years.

  • Coverage limits: Up to $500,000 term/$25,000 whole
  • Waiting period: Applies after age 45
  • Unique feature: Death benefit available regardless of the cause of death

How to Choose the Best No Medical Exam Life Insurance Company

The number of life insurance providers can be overwhelming and paralyzing. Asking friends and family about their life insurance policy and using guides like ours can be a great first step toward finding your policy.

However, guides and recommendations can only go so far in helping you decide which no medical exam life insurance company is best for you. You'll need to take factors like age, medical history, and your financial goals into consideration when you make your decisions. A qualified insurance professional may be able to help you crunch your numbers and find the best policy.

Coverage Amount

The most important, and most obvious, consideration when choosing a life insurance policy is the payout your loved ones will receive. The coverage you need will often depend on why you want life insurance. If your main goal is to make sure your final expenses are covered, than you'll have plenty of options. However, if you have long-term goals in mind, you may want to consider other life insurance options.

It's worth noting that no exam life insurance often has limited death benefits, so your options will be limited.

Policy Type

Generally speaking, most no exam life insurance fits into two types of life insurance policies: simplified issue and guaranteed issue.

Simplified issue : This is ideal for people who want life insurance but have a moderate health condition that may bar them from other insurance options. It's worth noting that some simplified issue life insurance providers enforce graded death benefits, withholding access to your full death benefits for a few years.

Guaranteed issue:  Guaranteed issue life insurance is for older people looking for final expense coverage, which includes funeral and burial expenses. It limits applicants to those who are 50 and above.

Premiums for no medical exam life insurance are generally higher as applicants tend to be high-risk and requirements are lower. You'll want to keep this in mind as you sort through quotes.

Customer Service

You should peruse customer reviews on websites like Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau while shopping for a life insurance company. You should note how helpful and accessible a company's customer service team is and any issues with receiving payouts. Unresponsive insurance companies are the last thing that anyone wants to deal with after the passing of a loved one.

Best No Medical Exam Life Insurance FAQs

Most life insurance policies have some waiting period, whether it's a few weeks or longer. However, no medical exam life insurance is sometimes available with no waiting period, and you also have the option to purchase temporary coverage in the interim before your policy takes effect.

There are alternatives to a new medical exam life insurance policy. Insurance agents can quote you medical exam policies if you're denied a no medical exam option. An experienced agent may be able to assess your application before starting the process to avoid official denials. If you're concerned about premium limits, you can explore options like IUL ( indexed universal life ) for permanent life insurance that increases your benefit as long as you make premium payments.

The highest amount of life insurance you can get without a medical exam is lower than what you could get with a medical exam. Guaranteed-issue policies that don't require medical exams typically top out at $25,000 or $50,000 in coverage, while standard life insurance policies can offer millions in coverage.

You'll have to decide whether you prefer a whole or term policy based on your situation if you're getting no medical life insurance. A term policy has an expiration date, and extensions or conversions to a whole life policy are not guaranteed. If anything, your rate may be higher if you try to convert your policy. The insurer looks at you just as it would any other applicant of your age, health, etc. A whole life policy locks in premiums and payouts.

Yes, you can really get life insurance without a medical exam, but your options will be different. That's because you'll need to choose a guaranteed issue policy — a specific type of insurance that lets you bypass the medical exam requirement — and it will probably cost more than a regular policy including a medical exam.
