For a classic airboat swamp tour in New Orleans, choose Airboat Adventures. With this tour operator, you can expect interesting guides and multiple glimpses of alligators as you weave through 20,000-plus acres of cypress swamps. After your roughly two-hour airboat ride, take some time to explore the company's indoor facility, which houses Sugar, an albino gator.

While tours are available in both small (10 people) and large (30 people) boats, recent tourgoers recommend opting for a small boat tour, as the small airboats can access more remote corners of the swamp.

Pregnant women, children younger than 5 and people with back and neck injuries are not permitted to ride on the airboats. While there is no age minimum, children must weigh at least 45 pounds to zip line; the maximum weight limit is 280 pounds. This tour is not recommended for anyone who is pregnant or suffers from back pain or serious medical conditions.

About Cajun Country Swamp Tours

  Owner, Walter “Butch” Guchereau, grew up on a small Cajun farm located on the banks of the Bayou Teche in Breaux Bridge, La. From early on his father introduced him to the swamps of Cajun Country. By hunting, sport and commercial fishing and just plain exploring he came to know the swamps like his own backyard. Butch put himself through college by working summers on dredge boats located in Louisiana on the Mississippi and Atchafalaya River systems where he experienced the dynamic forces that have built the land of Acadiana over the last 25,000 years. He learned how the rivers, bayous, wetland areas, man’s interventions and coastal erosion are all intertwined and constantly changing. The time he has spent in the swamplands of Cajun Country coupled with college degrees in Zoology and Botany has given Butch a rich insight into the ecology of Louisiana swamps.

This knowledge has been taught to Cajun Country Swamp Tour boat captains to make your tour educational, entertaining, and enjoyable ( More than just a boat ride ). Your swamp tour is taken personally by us because we know that for many of you this maybe your only trip to Cajun Country and it is important to us that everyone’s swamp tour in Cajun Country is both pleasurable and memorable. 

Our tour boats are open Cajun crawfish skiffs powered by an extremely quiet, environmentally friendly, 4-stroke outboard motor with the water intake fixed so that shallow water muck and thick vegetation are not a problem. This very quiet motor, and the relatively small size of the swamp tour boat allows for some great wildlife viewing.

My swamp tour guides and I have spent most of our lives either learning about or earning an income from the swamps of Cajun Co untry - this is where we want to be. The swamps are our passion and Joie de Vivre (Joy of Life), and sharing a few hours with people who love and enjoy nature and the great outdoors is an enjoyable experience for us. Our personal experiences and observations along with my educational background enables us to give you an insightful eco-journey into the swamplands of the Atchafalaya Basin that is educational, enjoyable and entertaining; and just maybe with a serving of Cajun Hospitality this will not be your only trip to Cajun Country.

Yes, alligators are common, except when hibernating in the coldest months. But these tours aren’t just about the gators. What Time of Day Is Best for a Swamp Tour?

If you’re taking a tour in the summer, we’d recommend getting an early start for a few reasons. It’s cooler, first of all, because the temperatures haven’t had time to heat to the point that can be overbearing.

Also, the visibility is better. The harsh midday sun can literally be blinding, and you won’t be able to enjoy the spectacular scenery as much.

If morning doesn’t fit very well into your travel schedule, we’d suggest waiting until late afternoon or evening, if available. The most important thing is to avoid the day’s most intense heat and the brightest sunlight.

How Much Does a Swamp Tour Cost in Louisiana?

Prices for the swamp tours vary, but you can generally count on paying $25 to $50 for each adult passenger. And that’s typically for a two-hour ride, but sometimes they are a bit shorter. There are usually discounts for children, and it’s often free for kids ages 2 years old and under.

These prices are for classic-style narrated swamp tours that you enjoy as part of a small group of fellow tourists. The swifter airboat tours are a bit pricier, starting at around $65 or more per passenger.

About: Capt. Dean Wilson is also a commercial fisherman and hunter, so he knows these watery woods like the back of his hand. The two-hour tour explores parts of the Atchafalaya Basin, which he describes as “the largest forested wetlands in North America.” 

Unlike some tour operators, Last Wilderness Swamp Tours doesn’t feed alligators or try to lure them in for a closer look. He prefers to observe them in their natural state from a respectful distance.

2. Cajun Pride Swamp Tours

Address: 110 Frenier Rd, LaPlace, LA 70068

About: Just 25 miles west of New Orleans, Cajun Pride Swamp Tours is a privately owned wildlife refuge in the Cajun town of Frenier. The locals call this waterway the Manchac Swamp, and it’s been their livelihood for generations.

The swamp tour is on private property, offering an exclusive experience. “Our privately owned swamp ensures that your narrated tour will not be disturbed by other boats,” Cajun Pride says. The company also offers plantation tours, or you can book a combination tour.

3. Louisiana Tour Company

About: See the sights in comfort along the Barataria Swamps in Jefferson Parish, across the river from New Orleans. Besides the typical wildlife, the sights include an old family cemetery, a Cajun fishing village, and a 2,000-year-old Native American burial mound.

While some Louisiana swamp tours are more primitive, this one uses a covered excursion boat with cushioned seats, windows, and even an on-board restroom. It’s about a 35-minute drive from the French Quarter. If you prefer, Louisiana Tour Company pick you up at your hotel and take you back later.

4. Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours & Airboat Tours

They have 40 years of experience taking visitors on memorable trips along the 250-square-mile pristine swamp off the Pearl River. The place got its name from the multitudes of honey bees in the area. Keep an eye out for the bald eagles that have continuously nested here for at least a century.

About: Farther west in Cajun Country, Capt. Wendy Thibodeaux uses a smaller motorboat that carries up to five along the magnificent waters of Lake Martin. Her tour lasts an hour and almost guarantees sightings of three kinds of herons and alligators on warm, sunny days.

About: This picturesque area near Lafayette is the longtime home of Capt. Bryce Fuselier. When he’s not busy being a husband and father, he’s giving tours of Lake Martin, sometimes from sunrise to sundown.

But the work at Swamp Tours of Acadiana doesn’t stop there — he also schedules nighttime swamp tours by appointment. “All I know today about Louisiana swamps and its hidden secrets were passed down by my grandfather and dad,” he says. Swamps are cool—even if they’re treated like the ugly stepchild of the natural world.

Though not quite as grand as a mountain range or as colorful as a forest in autumn, swamps are endlessly intriguing and ecologically important.

The United States is also rich in swamps —especially the state of Louisiana.

Louisiana’s bayous are habitats for diverse plant and animal species, from alligators to monarch butterflies. Swamps also work overtime to do things like suck up carbon from the atmosphere, filter and purify water, and provide flood control and storm protection.

I’ve even visited man-made swamps that were built to help purify dark water (that’s all the nasty stuff we flush down the toilet). The swamps filter the water, which then flows into wetlands.

These wetlands attract rare birds —enough so that these constructed wetlands have become hot spots for bird watchers.

Have I sold you on the humble swamp yet?

If you’re answer is no, then perfect. I don’t have the time or expertise to change your mind about swamps—but Dr. Paul Wagner of Honey Island does. And he wants to take you from the streets of New Orleans into America’s wildest swamp.

Enter Honey Island

Between the East and West Pearl Rivers lies Honey Island, a stretch of swamp named for its once numerous honey bee population.

Not only is this swamp home to rich fauna, including cypress trees, swamp mahogany, and mangroves but also dozens of animals.

Honey Island visitors have seen creatures like red wolves, deer, alligators (by the thousands), and even something called a Florida cougar. (I guess this one is the only one to make it west of the Mississippi.)

As outlined up top, birds are also really comfortable in swamps thanks to their nutrient-rich waters. For over a century, bald eagles have nested in Honey Island. But that’s just one of hundreds of rare species that await you in the swamp.

I suggest keeping a lookout for egrets, herons, storks, osprey, and more.

Dr. Wagner’s take on Honey Island

Honey Island is a prime spot to experience the wonders and wilderness of a swamp. But it’s accessible to just about anyone who’s heading into New Orleans.

As far as I’m aware, Dr. Wagner’s Swamp Tour is the only one that offers a bus pickup and drop-off from New Orleans .

In addition to the ease of transportation, this tour is popular thanks to Dr. Wagner’s years of experience. Not only is he a qualified ecologist with a (hardcore) passion for protecting this swamp, but he’s been perfecting his tour since it first launched in1982.

Here’s why I think Dr. Wagner’s tour is worth your time and money.

• The company uses small boats. This protects the swamp while also offering visitors a very up-close look at flora and fauna.
• All guides are licensed, meaning you’ll learn intriguing and memorable facts about Honey Island.
• The company meets animal welfare guidelines, so you don’t need to worry about negatively affecting the ecosystem.
• There’s a Big Foot factor in there—and who doesn’t love the chance to possibly spot a cryptid?

Reviews for Dr. Wagner’s Honey Island Swamp Tour

Here’s the rub—I don’t think Dr. Wagner hosts any of the tours anymore. That’s not a red flag to me. If he launched the tour in 1982, then he would have been due for retirement a few years back.

I also haven’t been able to find more on Paul Wagner’s doctorate degree, though he’s listed as an ecologist in a few articles.

That being said, based on reading dozens of reviews of the tour, people love Honey Island’s current tour guides. Both the group and private tours are highly rated, with frequent shout-outs to Captain Hunter and Captain Kyle.

I think the better question is, if you’re heading to New Orleans, why wouldn’t you go on the tour? (I swear I’m not being paid by Honey Island—I really do just love swamps.)

Welcome to my webpage. Hello, my name is Wendy Thibodeaux. I have a small company, called Louisiana Swamp Tours, where I take people on beautiful, narrated swamp tours. The place where the swamp tours take place is Lake Martin, located in Breaux Bridge, LA. Louisiana Swamp Tours’ boat will fit up to 9 average size adults. Average size meaning around 185lbs. Our smaller sized boat is more personable. On the boat tour you will travel on the water, passing under cypress trees; with moss adorning and hanging from their branches. While on the swamp tour, we will have the opportunity to see alligators, large and small, and turtles too! Different birds, like the little green heron, little blue heron, great blue heron, white egret, cattle egret, and the snowy egret are often spotted. Sometimes the rosette spoonbill, night heron, and red wing black bird are also noticed while on tour. Along the swamp tour, you will learn different things about the swamp and it’s inhabitants. Louisiana Swamp Tours invites you to join us on a one hour swamp tour through the beautiful Lake Martin. Reservations are required.
