A lentejo (Central Portugal) is often dubbed the New Tuscany because of its amazing wine region with mesmerizing nature and enchanting views. This picturesque and charming place is where you fall in love with the whitewashed villages, medieval castles, sunbathed plains, lifestyle, and secular traditions. Biking in Alentejo is a dream. Discover the millennial history, culture, and traditions with some of the world’s best wines. “My husband and I enjoyed two back to back cycle tours – Wild Algarve and Castles and Wine, in October 2019. We felt spoiled by the exceptional service provided on these fully supported tours. I can’t say enough about our support team, Mario and Jorge in Algarve, Maria and Joanna in Alentejo. Portugal is a beautiful, welcoming country that can stand on its own. It was our guides and van drivers who made the trip extraordinary. They were knowledgeable, fun, easy going yet professional, and truly made our trip awesome. (…) I have no hesitation in recommending Portugal Best Cycling as truly Portugal’s BEST.”

Biking in Portugal’s Alentejo Region

“We enjoyed a wonderful self-guided bicycling tour in the Algarve in August. Portugal Best Cycling made all the arrangements for the cycling trip from start to finish and everything was perfect. (…) Sometimes we were riding along the coast, coming upon beaches or stunning cliffsides, while at other times we were inland and riding through sparsely-populated farmland or park land. The routes pass through towns at just the right time for a snack or lunch. We were impressed with the lodging as well. (…) We would happily plan another self-guided cycling trip with PBC!”

Rolling hills & coastal views

Portugal bike tours.

Located in southwestern Europe, Portugal features over 528 miles (850 km) of pristine blue-water, sandy beaches and a sunny Mediterranean climate—the perfect atmosphere for cycling.

Lisbon boasts The Park of Nations, home to one of the largest estuaries in Europe, and is a smooth cycle ride. Pedal through Porto’s castles and sip world-famous Port wine of the River Douro.

The dedicated bike paths and side roads of the countryside have little traffic and allow cyclists to easily explore. Likewise, the rolling hills and quaint villages invite adventure and the stunning Algarve region boasts plentiful coastal views.

“The countryside was beautiful, with both challenging and gentle hills, and the people we met were friendly and helpful.”

Our Douro Valley, Portugal Bike Tours

With granite bluffs, terraced vineyards, and whitewashed villages, the Douro Valley in Portugal’s north has some of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe – and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tours explore the region along quiet lanes that snake their way up and down the steep-sided valleys. Along the route, you have the chance to visit medieval houses, grand churches, quaint villages, and excellent museums. The area is also one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world, with wine – especially Port wine – having been produced here for over 2,000 years.

The region was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 2001, primarily driven by its long history of winemaking, with an official demarcation as a winemaking region having been made in 1756. The landscape has been manipulated and terraced over centuries. The landscape is additionally dotted with quintas , which are farm complexes and estates built and developed for the purpose of winemaking.

Cycling in Portugal offers a unique way to explore the scenic vineyards, charming villages, and historic sites of the region. The winding roads and gentle hills provide for challenging yet enjoyable riding, with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Stop at local wineries to sample the famous port wine and visit historic landmarks while taking in the area’s rich cultural heritage. Overall, cycling in Portugal offers a memorable and enjoyable way to experience the beauty and culture of the region. Stay in unique hotels full of history and character.

Day 3: Vila Real to Pinhão

Day 4:  Pinhão Loop Day

Day 5: Pinhão to Peso da Régua

Day 6: Peso da Régua Loop Day

Day One - Porto to Vidago

The Intermediate ride starts with a van transfer to Lagoa do Alvão, a lake just outside Vila Pouca de Aguiar. The first section of the ride is flat through open, rocky fields with wide-open vistas. After 6 km, the route descends through pine forests – typical of Northern Portugal – as it passes the Pedras Salgadas Nature Park. Soon after the park, a short climb brings you to a long, rolling descent into Vidago. The route is punctuated with small stone hamlets with cobbled streets.

Leisure riders will be transferred to the Pedras Salgadas Nature Park where they join the Intermediate ride, described above.

The Challenge route begins in Ribeira de Pena – at one of the many beautiful Baroque churches in the area. A descent from the town takes you to forested roads and then on to an open, steep ten-kilometer climb with expansive views. The route joins the Intermediate route shortly before the Pedras Salgadas Nature Park.

OVERNIGHT TOWN

Vidago is a small spa town famed for its miraculous springs with medicinal carbonated waters. In the 19th century, the spa was popular with the royal court and became the most visited spa in Portugal. The waters here have been bottled since 1873.

Day Two - Vidago to Vila Real

Today’s routes head south through scenic and remote countryside.

The Intermediate ride follows a bike path. The views are typical for north Portugal with rocky outcrops, ferns and forested sections. Riders exit the bike path in Vila Pouca de Aguiar for lunch and then rejoin it for a long, straight section through flat farmland. The route joins the road for the final descent into Vila Real.

Leisure riders take a van transfer to Vila Pouca de Aguiar where they join the Intermediate route.

The Challenge route heads west from Vidago before turning south and climbing up through forests and past vineyards and olives groves. The first climb is dotted with houses and villages. The second is more remote and steeper with multiple hairpins. A smooth descent takes you to Vila Pouca de Aguiar for lunch, after which riders follow a modified version of the Intermediate route (avoiding a section of gravel) described above.

Vila Real is a compact, university town on the Corgo River. As the name suggests, the city has a royal heritage with many grand palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries. There are also interesting museums, churches, and gardens. The river here runs through a steep-sided gorge that has scenic walking trails along the riverbank.

Day Three - Vila Real to Pinhão

Today’s ride to Pinhão takes riders into the heart of the Alto Douro; an area that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. The area is visually spectacular and has a rich history in wine growing, dating back over 2,000 years.

After an initial climb from Vila Real, the Intermediate route winds through small country roads, passing by small villages, farms, and rugged forests. The final seven miles of the route is a twisting descent into the pretty little town of Pinhão where riders get their first sight of the magnificent Douro River.

The Leisure route starts with a transfer to the village of São Martinho de Anta where it joins the intermediate route.

The Challenge ride winds deeper into the rugged countryside to the east of Vila Real before turning south to the pretty medieval villages of Sabrosa and Provesende. The route joins the Intermediate route for the final section into Pinhão.

The Epic route takes a much longer loop to the southwest, following the Douro River to the east into Pinhão.

Known as the home of port wine, Pinhão sits on a picturesque bend of the Douro River. Wine is the key attraction and there are many quintas to visit where you can tour and taste port as well as many other regional wines. There are also boat and train tours out of this attractive little town.

Day Four -Pinhão Loops

All today’s routes start by climbing the steep hill out of Pinhão to the village of Casal de Loivos where riders can take a short detour to the viewpoint that is claimed to be one of the most beautiful views in the world.

The Leisure ride is a simple out-and-back ride to the viewpoint.

After the viewpoint, the Intermediate route continues to climb through wine country to the pretty village of Alijó – a great option for lunch. After Alijó, the ride is a relatively easy cruise downhill, back to Pinhão.

The Challenge route continues west from Alijó past terraced vineyards before descending into Sabrosa – another stunningly pretty village and another great option for lunch. After Sabrosa, the route turns south and passes quinta after quinta before descending back to Pinhão.

The Epic route follows the Challenge route to Alijó where it heads southeast to begin a challenging loop that takes in the riverside town of Tua as well as some spectacular mountain passes on both sides of the Douro River.

Day Five -Pinhão to Peso da Régua

The Leisure route starts with a train ride from Pinhão to Covelinhas. In Covelinhas, it is a steep climb out of the train station but the views over the river and the surrounding landscape are spectacular. The route then parallels the Douro River into Peso da Régua.

Note that there is no Intermediate route available today.

The Challenge route begins with a tough 7-mile climb to the northwest of Pinhão, passing through vineyards as well as rugged, wild countryside. At the top of the climb, you begin a long, rolling cruise past vineyards, cobbled villages, and olive groves. The final descent to Peso da Régua is fast and technical.

The Epic route heads into the hills south of the Douro River. There are three big climbs, and each winding climb gives front row seats to the colossal landscape of the Douro valley. The village of Armamar, at the bottom of the second climb, makes a great lunch stop. The descent to Peso da Régua is 9 miles on smooth roads with more outstanding views.

Situated in the heart of the Douro Valley, Peso da Régua has a rich history dating back to Roman times. In the 18th century, the town became the main trading post for port wine and is now home to some of the best restaurants in the area as well as being the starting point for scenic train rides and river cruises.

Day Six - Peso da Régua Loops - Last Day

Today’s rides head across the car-free bridge to the south bank of the Douro River.

The Leisure ride is an out-and-back ride on small lanes alongside the river. The roads are rolling with fine views of vineyards, their quintas and, of course, the river.

The Intermediate ride follows the Leisure ride for five miles before heading uphill to the historic town of Lamego with its castle, cathedral, sanctuary, and iconic stairway. After enjoying lunch in Lamego, you descend quickly back to Peso da Régua.

The Challenge route follows the Intermediate route for the most part but adds in more riding west, alongside the Douro River.

The Epic route is the same as the Challenge route with an additional loop south from Lamego. This additional loop climbs through remote villages, fruit orchards, and pretty countryside. At the top of the climb the route changes to pine forests and riders enjoy a fast descent back to Lamego, where they rejoin the Intermediate route back to Peso da Régua.

BIKE CHOICES

Hybrid bike.

Hybrids bikes, a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike

Hybrids bikes are a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. They have a relaxed riding position and are great for beginners and intermediate riders. A typical model is the Trek 7.3 FX with Shimano components and high-pressure road tires for better cycling efficiency than your typical hybrid.

Road bikes, a racing style bike with drop handlebars

Our road bikes are a racing style bike with drop handlebars. The road bikes are faster bikes than the hybrids with less upright riding position. A typical model is the Émonda ALR 5 with aluminum frame, carbon forks, and Shimano 105 components. (NOTE: Some of the smaller roads in Puglia can be a little rough making a hybrid bikes a better choice for some riders.)

eBikes, designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills

Our eBikes are designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills. The ride position is very similar to our hybrids. We typically rent Scott E-Sub equipped with a 250W E-drive Bosch motor. If one rider in a couple is stronger than the other, an eBike can be a great choice for the less-strong rider.

Your Own Bike, if you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there

If you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there. Please ask about options for bike shipping and assembly.

Lisbon, Atlantic Coast, Evora, Estremoz, Monsaraz

7 days, fully guided & supported, luxury historical monument hotels.

Cycling in Portugal is a virtual treasure trove of finds. Bike Portugal’s many quiet routes in the Alentejo region as well as the cosmopolitan vibe of Lisbon. Pamper yourself in the most special collection of hotels, both luxurious and historic and with daily cycle routes designed to treat you too.

Experience dynamic Lisbon before you start cycling into the tranquillity of the countryside of the Alentejo. Still mainly rural, bike through marble quarries, cork forests, olive groves and perhaps hear a unique type of polyphonic singing, so if you care to warble a few notes while pushing the pedals, you’ll fit right in.

Cycle to the UNESCO city of culture, Évora and see its atmosphere of medieval European and Roman ruins, the lovely towns of Estremoz and Monsaraz and the blue and white painted villages that lie in between. Taste the succulent red wines of the area at a private wine tasting, enjoy local specialities and an array of sweets to tempt any palate.

Stay in wonderful atmospheric historical monuments, now luxury Pousada hotels and including one of the Alentejo´s best hotels, the Convent do Espinheiro. This is surely a cycle trip for those who enjoy relaxing travel on two wheels, in a varied rich landscape.

Historic Hotels on Portuguese Bike Tour

“Amazing cycling in Portugal We had a fabulous time with a great group of people riding the ‘Amazing Alentejo’. Our guides Geoff and Jose where fantastic, nothing was ever a hassle or bother, even when they had to pivote due to the terrible weather conditions. At each location it we were staying the night, also included a tour of either the village or a wine tasting. Each night we stayed in either Castle’s or Convents that had been converted into 5 star accommodation. This is our third ride with Cycling Country and would highly recommend them. We will be back in the near future for another amazing riding experience. Cheers from Australia!” R.&D. Guy – Vic,Australia – Oct 2023
“Biking across Portugal from the Atlantic in the southern Alentejo area to the border of Spain was the ideal adventure. We had a choice of touring, E-bike, or hybrid style bicycle. The accomodations were lovely and we were served delicious picnic lunches or fine dinners, all reasonably priced for our custom group of 16. We’ll be back in 2024 for the Bordeaux tour. G. Colley – Georgia, USA – May 2023
“I had the pleasure of going on my second Cycling Country bike tour last month, and it was even better than my first experience. Maggi, Geoff, and their team went above and beyond to create a truly unforgettable trip with their level of personal attention and professionalism. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed with the level of detail and organization that had gone into planning the tour. The itinerary was well-designed, with plenty of time to explore each destination and enjoy the local culture. The accommodations were excellent, and the food was delicious and picnic lunches exceptional. But what really made my trip special was the people. The Cycling Country team is made up of incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and helpful people who are truly passionate about cycling. They were always there to offer support and encouragement, and they went out of their way to make sure everyone had a great experience. I would highly recommend Cycling Country to anyone looking for a memorable and enjoyable bike tour. I know I’ll be back!” M. Zadeh – Georgia, USA – May 2023
“The hotels alone are worth the trip… The Portugal tour ALENTEJO was amazing, weather was perfect in March/April timeframe, very nice scenery, spectacular hotel/castle, amazing food. Tour offer a good variety of landscape, some challenging at times but all well worth it. I can’t get over the magnificent Castle and former Monastery we stayed in, just the hotel alone are worth the trip!!!. It was a guided tour and Geoff was fantastic and very helpful and knowledgeable about the places visited and all around way of life there. A must do…” C. Nadine – Texas, USA – April 2023
“Portuguese Cycling Tour – A Charming Trip” Each day during the ride, the scenery got better and better. We had perfect weather, the accommodations were topnotch, the food incredible and our guides, the Javiers, were the best. They made our transitions seamless, and they worked together efficiently and professionally while maintaining a sense of comradery with the group.” J. Mills – Texas, USA – Oct 2022
“Autumn Alentejo BikeTrip” “Great cycling trip. Friendly and informative guides (Balbino and Dani) and a great group of cyclist of approx equal riding abilities. The Company also organised fantastic hotels, from converted monasteries to castles. The side tours were fantastic and pitched at the right level of intensity after a day of riding. Of special note was the olive oil tasting .. fantastic. I recommend Cycling Country to anyone, and I am watching with interest for their plans to run a tour in Morocco.” J. Woolford – Vic, Australia – Oct 2019
“Cycling Country`s Amazing Alentejo is Amazing! This was my first guided trip with Cycling Country, after having a wonderful self-guided trip using them in Andalusia. Wow! So impressed with the level of service, the knowledgeable guides and local insight. I cannot say enough good things about this small, family run company where the owners make sure every last detail is perfect. Top notch accommodations and great food. Challenging yet fun cycling routes.” D. Brandstetter – Calif, USA – April 2019
“What a delightful experience. I’ve traveled the world and this experience is right up there with the best. As a non biker I had a wonderful time and thank you again for arranging for my strange eating habits. There was not one thing I didn’t like about my experience. You guys are the best! I have already recommended this trip to my friends. Cycling Country gets an A+. I look forward to another trip with you and Geoff.” B. Peterson – USA – Oct 2018
“Romantic Alentejo cycling Tour at its best! This is our 2nd cycling country tour and Maggi And Geoff we’re exceptional hosts, guides, friends and cyclists. The incredible attention to detail from picnics to accommodation, routes, dinners, coffee stops and support van was second to none. We had a small group and this made our experience even more resonant. We would recommend Spring as the most beautiful time to cycle through Portugal. Weather was mild and the wildflowers were in full bloom. We will be back again and again!!!!! Thank you again for this memorable trip.” S. Wall – Brisbane, Australia – May 2018
“Fantastic bike trip!! We had a group of ten (all family) and this was our second ride with Cycling Country. We had a variety of bicycling experience but Cycling Country not only made it work but made everyone have a fun experience. Alentejo area of Portugal is beautiful and the roads are quiet for biking. Maggi and Geof were very knowledgeable and took great care of us. They really wanted us to be happy. The bikes that they had were top notch. I used an electric assist bike to help me up the big hills and that made the trip stress free for me. Cycling Country picked great restaurants and inns for us to stay at. They also set up a few walking tours that were great. If you are looking for a biking company, pick this one. They will take exceptional care of you!” G. & M. Barkley – Illinois, USA – September 2017
“Amazing Trans Iberian Cycling Tour! My wife and I just completed the Trans Iberian ride from Lisbon to Granada with a few days in Sevilla. It was a great trip, interesting and well organised. Amazing landscapes and villages. We are glad we chose to go with Cycling Country, who are based in southern Spain after being set up by Geoff and Maggi 13 years ago. Great local guides ( thanks Geoff, Maggi, Javier, Dani and Balbino) with a professionally run operation. Accommodation was also great and in many cases the same ( or more interesting) than more expensive tour options. If you are interested in cycling in Spain or Portugal I’d thoroughly recommend Cycling Country. Visited May 2017” A & L. Hood – Australia – May 2017
“Maggi & Geoff, What a delight to meet you and be included in this memorable bike tour. Flexible was certainly the key word and you two epitomized that word. Loved getting to know you and we wish you and your daughter the best.” D & D. Crawford – CA, USA – April 2016
“Thanks so much for a super time! Despite the soggy conditions you made the trip fun and full of lovely surprises. You are very accommodating and kind and it was a pleasure to travel with you. Would love to do France in the future! Meanwhile, Happy Riding and be Well!” J. Logan – NY, USA – May 2016
“Dear Maggi, Dean and David, Thanks so much for sending these Portugal photos along! I’m sorry I didn’t meet you, Maggi, but I really enjoyed meeting Dean and David and want to let you know what a fine job they did during our trip. Always cheerful, always helpful and always going the extra mile or kilometer to keep everyone happy.” J. Bremner – WA, USA – May
“My spouse and I are experienced cyclists and have been on a number of very good bike tours (self guided and group) over the years. The Cycling Country – Alentejo Tour was the best we’ve ever done. Highly recommended.” J & L – Calgary, Canada
“ We really enjoyed this wonderful tour. The accommodation was just incredible, the route and well thought out stops made for great cycling days, but meeting you all and riding with Cycling Country will be my lasting memories. Thanks again for such a fantastic trip through Portugal.” Susan Trutor – Adelaide – Australia
“This was my 3rd. trip with this small company (Cycling Country) and all 3 have been exceptional. The company provides top quality rental bikes and the trip is fully supported; meaning 2 vans and a third guide on a bike to take care of all needs on the road. The route is on quiet country roads and the accommodations were all 4 & 5 star in renovated convents and monasteries. Guided tours of Lisbon and Evora were provided as well as visits to a winery, marble quarry and pottery exhibits. This is a great trip for any level of cyclist who wants to experience some of the diverse culture and history of Portugal. Great value for a first rate bike tour. I can’t say enough about this excellent tour with Cycling Country” Ian Taylor – Vancouver, Canada, October 2014
“EXCEPTIONAL! From our first contact to the gorgeous photos that were taken and sent to us when we got home, this company is EXCEPTIONAL! My husband and I are novice cyclists but wanted to do a tour while in Europe. We chose the Romantic Alentejo in Portugal with Country Cycling. Our guides, the owners and one associate, are not only passionate about cycling but about ensuring that everyone has the best experience possible. The equipment is excellent, the routes are well thought out and the accommodations are amazing, not to mention the wonderful picnics and dinners along the way. We felt pampered, challenged and completely safe!” B. Price – April 2013
“Amazing accommodations, great cycling route and personalized service Cycling Country delivered an outstanding 9 day cycling trip from Lisboa to the Spanish border through the Alentejo region of Portugal. Everything from the two walking tours (in Lisboa and Evora) to the accommodations (most were luxurious pousadas (renovated monasteries, convents or castles with swimming pools)) to the hearty breakfasts and group suppers to the well planned cycling routes was top notch. Geoff, Maggi and Dean were personable, accommodating, fun, informative and obviously love cycling. The weather was unseasonably hot but the support van was available to provide water to keep all hydrated or provide a lift if someone so desired. The route is through primarily rolling agricultural area and small towns and had only a few short climbs. A highlight for us was the stay in Monsaraz — a beautiful character hotel in a quaint town that is perched on top of a large hill and has amazing 360 degree view of the land below! What a sunset! What an early morning ride to the Spanish border while the sun was rising!” S. Riley – Toronto, Canada, Oct 2011

The sun sparkles blue and gold; a warm breeze washes over your body; leaves sway in the summer sun and your mind is free as you roll over a small hill covered in colorful wildflowers. Around the bend, you spot the van and trailer where your gourmet picnic lunch is waiting. The chef and tour leader, Andre, greets you with a warm smile and then you sit down at a small wooden picnic table, lean back and take in the stunning view.

It’s only then that you realize you’re perched near the edge of a grand seaside cliff, looking out across a sparkling blue ocean that sweeps off into the distance as far as you can see. Birds soar off thermals created by the land that collides nearby with the sea, and in the distance you spot a school of surfers, waiting to leap into the Atlantic waters with their surfboards ready under their arms.

As lunch is served, your taste buds become instantly overjoyed. The food is delicious, and unique, and entirely Portuguese. Local cheeses, sea food, servings of rice and deserts of all kinds are set before you in an exquisite three-course meal.

After lunch, you jump back on your bicycle, and continue down the coastline – the rest of your tour group following closely behind. A mix of dirt, gravel and paved roads takes you for several kilometers through an orchard of cork trees, past a giant bed of wildflowers, and along the edge of several scenic beaches, before you eventually make your way to the hotel – a picturesque oasis in the middle of a valley.

After being shown to your room, you remove your shoes and place them by the door. The red tile under your feet is cool, but welcoming. It feels like home, only better! After a good, long day in the saddle, the warm shower feels like heaven, and a short nap in your bed makes you feel as though you are floating on a cloud.

Later that evening, you make your way to the dining patio, where a fancy feast of foods is laid out before you – one course after the next. While you eat, you chat with your new friends about the day you’ve just had, while the sun sets in the distance and a relaxing wave of warmth and peace washes over you. With your stomach now full and your heart filled with joy after a beautiful day of bicycle touring, you take a walk around the property, smelling the flowers and soaking in the beauty of your surroundings.

As you retire to your room, you can’t help but think, “This guided cycling holiday with Bike Tours Portugal is everything I could have asked for… and a whole lot more!”

My Experience With Bike Tours Portugal

That opening story is exactly how I felt after the third day of cycling on the Cruising the Coast guided bike tour with Bike Tours Portugal . The first two days of the trip were fantastic, but there was a little bit of magic on that third day that made me sit back and realize, “Wow! There’s something really special about this place, this experience, and this bike tour.”

This past summer, I had the pleasure of participating in the Cruising the Coast guided bike tour with Bike Tours Portugal , and it was seriously one of the most memorable things I did this year. Everything came together on this trip to make it the perfect cycling holiday. The weather was spectacular, the scenery was stupendous, the tour leaders were friendly and knowledgeable, the food was always superb, and the cycling was an absolute joy – from the first day to the last. My experience on the Cruising the Coast guided bike tour with Bike Tours Portugal was nothing short of an A+.

Bike Tours Portugal gourmet picnic lunch and luxury sprinter van and trailer

What Makes Bike Tours Portugal Unique?

Bike Tours Portugal is a high-end bicycle touring company. They specialize in luxury cycling holidays in Portugal and they do a really good job of it. Their services aren’t cheap, but they’re the best at what they do!

The tour is supported by a Mercedes Sprinter van and trailer, which is equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, and bike storage/maintenance facilities. If you don’t want to cycle one day, you can ride along in the van. Or if you need to use the restroom during your lunch break, there’s no need to pee on the side of the road. The trailer is equipped with a fully-functional bathroom!

While the breakfasts on tour consist of high-end buffets and the dinners are exquisite three-course meals consisting of local dishes and all the seafood you could ask for, the gourmet picnic lunches served throughout the tour are really something unique. No other tour company (that I know of) is serving up such high-end lunches to their clients. You’re going to love stopping for lunch each day!

Plus, the staff at Bike Tours Portugal is the best. They are friendly and knowledgeable, but far from stuffy and stuck-up. They are strong cyclists, but won’t turn your bike tour into a race. They understand that your time with them is meant to be an enjoyable experience – from start to finish, so they’ve gone out of their way to design a guided bike tour that meets and exceeds your wildest expectations.

Daily Overview of the Tour

A day-by-day account of the Cruising the Coast guided bike tour can be found on the official Bike Tours Portugal website , but my extra notes and comments have been added here. In addition, you can watch the entire bike tour unfold, from beginning to end, by viewing the videos below each day’s description.

Day 1: Arrival in Lisbon, Portugal

On the first day of the Cruising the Coast guided bike tour, you will be transported from the airport in Lisbon, Portugal to your first accommodation in the nearby fishing village of Sesimbra. It’s an enjoyable 1-hour ride in the van from the airport to the hotel, allowing you to see a little bit of Lisbon before heading  to the quaint little seaside village where your hotel is located. The Sesimbra & Spa Hotel is a massive, white, luxury hotel located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. From the water, the property looks like a giant cruise ship parked on land. The rooms are big and modern, with spectacular views of the beach and ocean from practically every room. Once you check in, you have the rest of the day to walk along the beach, take a swim in the hotel pool or do anything you please before dinner is served in the hotel restaurant later in the evening.

Jose and Andre - tour leaders with Bike Tours Portugal

Day 2: Sesimbra to Tróia

On the second day of your luxury cycling holiday with Bike Tours Portugal , you’ll eat a delicious buffet breakfast in the hotel, before loading your belongings into the tour van and being equipped with your bicycle – provided by the tour company. After a short welcome by the tour leaders, you’ll begin your ride out of town and down the coast. Half-way through the day you’ll stop for the first of your many delicious picnic lunches, and you’ll finish the day by taking a short ferry ride across the water to the Tróia Peninsula and your accommodation for the night, the Tróia Design Hotel. Situated at the very tip of an enormous peninsula of golden sand and pine trees, the Tróia Design Hotel is a large, modern, multi-story hotel equipped with all the luxuries you would expect in any top-tier hotel. The view from your room is spectacular, as you can look out across the water toward the roads that you were cycling on earlier that day. Dinner is served in the hotel restaurant and afterward, you can retire to your room or take a romantic walk on the beach.

Day 3:  Tróia to Herdade Barradas da Serra

After another incredible buffet breakfast, you’ll hop on your bicycle and say goodbye to the Tróia Design Hotel. It’s a long, flat, enjoyable ride south down the peninsula, during which you will ride past massive sand dunes and hundreds of small pine trees. From your bicycle, you can see the water on both sides, with nothing but flat, smooth tarmac in front of you for as far as the eye can see. In the tiny town of Comporta, you’ll visit the local winery, where local Alentejo wines can be tasted and the vineyards can be viewed up close and personally. Your gourmet picnic lunch is served at one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches (Praia do Carvalhal), and as the day draws to a close, the landscape will change from sea cliffs and ocean breezes to wildflowers and fields filled with cork trees. At the Herdade Barradas da Serra, you’ll fall in love with the intimate and inviting accommodations and you’ll have a chance to go hiking on one of the nearby trails or take a swim in their pool. Dinner is served on the patio as you relax and take in the beauty of Portugal’s Alentejo region.

Day 4: Herdade Barradas da Serra to 3 Marias

Breakfast is served inside (or on the patio) at the Herdade Barradas da Serra. Afterward, you will load your belongings into the van and take off down the road. It’s a long 40 kilometer ride before lunch, but the cycling is some of the best on the entire tour. Small rolling hills covered with trees and wildflowers, gravel roads with very little traffic and some of the best beaches in the world await you on this particular day of cycling. After a seaside picnic lunch, you’ll continue biking down the coastline to the charming village of Porto Côvo. It’s here that you’ll begin your bike tour in the Vicentine Coast Natural Park, where more than 750 plants and 200 species of birds have been identified. Eagles, falcons, fox and linx are also known to live within the area. On this particular night, you’ll be sleeping and dining at the 3 Marias guesthouse – a unique countryside property surrounded by fields of yellow flowers and the occasional wandering donkey and/or ostrich.

Day 5: 3 Marias to Touril Country House

After a memorable homemade breakfast at the 3 Marias guesthouse, you’ll continue your cycling holiday by biking through the Vicentine Coast Natural Park, which is more than 100 kilometers long and is Portugal’s largest stretch of protected coastline. The ride today is extremely coastal, with lots of opportunities to stop and take photos of Portugal’s most scenic beaches. In addition to having yet another gourmet picnic lunch at a beautiful coastal beach location, you’ll cycle past the Cabo Sardão Lighthouse and dozens of windswept sea cliffs before arriving at the Touril Country House, where grazing donkeys welcome you to your luxury accommodation in the countryside. Sip a lemonade at the bar or take a dip in the saltwater swimming pool.

Day 6:  Touril Country House to Monte do Cardal

This may be the shortest ride of the entire bike tour (at about 30 total kilometers), but it’s a bike ride that will take you to some of the best beaches in all of Portugal, if not the world. Watch the video below and you’ll see what I mean. After a buffet breakfast at the Touril Country House, you’ll jump on your bicycle and take off down a mix of road surfaces to one scenic beach after the next. A few small hill climbs are rewarded with downhills that will make you smile from ear to ear on the other side. Horses race to the roadside to greet you as you cycle past, and in the small hillside beach town of Odeceixe, you will find accommodation at the Monte do Cardal – a unique lodging option in which large apartments and small Portuguese houses have been transformed into luxury accommodations for guests from all around the world. For dinner tonight, you’ll be taken into the center of town, where you will dine with the locals at a restaurant that specializes in local seafood dishes.

Day 7:  Monte do Cardal to Sagres

On what will be your last day of cycling on the Cruising the Coast guided bike tour, you will begin your day like you did on all the days prior – with a delicious breakfast buffet. Afterward, you’ll begin cycling south toward Portugal’s south-western most point. You’ll enjoy your last gourmet picnic lunch in what might be one of the most spectacular places of all, and then you’ll continue your bike ride south toward the St. Vincent Lighthouse. As you look out across the Atlantic Ocean, try to imagine the Portuguese sailors of the past launching their boats from this location and sailing off into the unknown in search of new and distant worlds. Just a few kilometers of cycling later, you’ll arrive in the city of Sagres, where you will check into the Pousada Sagres, which is a large hotel sitting on top of a magnificent cliff overlooking the giant, blue ocean. As a group, you’ll enjoy one last dinner together before retiring to your room and calling it a night.

Day 8: Driving back to Lisbon, Portugal

Finally, on the last day of your luxury cycling holiday with Bike Tours Portugal , you’ll have breakfast in the hotel, pack up all of your belongings, load them into the support van, and then prepare yourself for the long ride back to Lisbon. It takes approximately 3.5 hours to drive from Sagres to Lisbon, but it’s an enjoyable trip, and the time in the car allows you to think back on all the incredible memories you’ve created over the past week.

The Accommodations

Part of what makes the experience with Bike Tours Portugal so memorable are the unique accommodations that you’ll be staying in throughout the tour. No two places are alike, which makes it fun to arrive at your accommodation each night, not knowing what to expect or what special treasures you might find there once you check into your room.

Sesimbra & Spa Hotel - Sesimbra, Portugal exterior and interior photos

Sesimbra & Spa Hotel – Sesimbra, Portugal

This large, cruise-ship style hotel takes up a vast majority of the beach-side real estate in the tiny town of Sesimbra. Inside, the hotel features a contemporary design, with large rooms and balconies offering spectacular views of the ocean below. The hotel’s restaurant is first-class, with breakfast, lunch and dinner being served there. My favorite part of the hotel is when you take the elevator down to the beach/pool and find yourself in a large tank-like room decorated with a giant mural of undersea life.

troia design hotel exterior and interior hotel room photos

Tróia Design Hotel – Tróia, Portugal

This impressive, modern hotel in the heart of tiny Tróia stands towering over any other building in the area. It’s bright exterior design looks a bit like white sails flapping in the summer sun, while the hotel’s interior is much darker and calmer – more like the bowels of a giant boat. The hotel staff speaks English, there’s a beautiful little dining room and bar, as well as a whole host of facilities you would expect to find in any modern-day hotel. Inside your room, you’ll find that the bathroom facilities are almost inside the room itself, with only a large glass tank (of sorts) separating the bathroom from the sleeping area. Step out onto the balcony, and you’ll be able to take in some spectacular views of the ocean, sailboats cruising past, and the scenic cliffs that sit far off in the distance.

Herdade Barradas da Serra - Grândola, Portugal

Herdade Barradas da Serra –  Grândola, Portugal

The Herdade Barradas da Serra in Grândola, Portugal was my favorite of any of the places we stayed at during the Cruising the Coast guided bike tour with Bike Tours Portugal . This sleepy little ranch house is situated in middle of a vast valley filled with grass and wild flowers and cork trees. What was very likely once a large ranch-style home has since been transformed into a high-end luxury lifestyle guesthouse in the middle of a tranquil nature resort. The swimming pool, hiking trails, open terrace and free WiFi only add to the overall impressiveness of this unique accommodation in southern Portugal.

tres marias interior guesthouse photos

3 Marias  – Vila Nova de Milfontes , Portugal

Situated in the relaxing (and somewhat remote) countryside of Northern Alentejo, the Tres Marias (or 3 Marias) guesthouse welcomes you in from the very start. You roll in on a dirt road surrounded by yellow wildflowers on all sides. Donkeys graze in the distance and an ostrich comes up to the fence as you walk past – wishing you hello. The rooms are white and clean, situated on two different levels, with a small living room on the first floor and the bed/bathroom on the second floor. Surrounded by the Agro-forest Ecological Reserve on all sides, the 3 Marias is a great place to spend the evening (or even a few days) as you explore the local area. I loved their buffet breakfast in the morning!

Touril Country House - Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal

Touril Country House – Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal

Built in 1825, the Touril Country House is a small, but inviting tourist hotel located along the Vicentine Coast of Portugal. This large, 365-hectare property offers a salt-water pool, free WiFi and accommodations with private verandas. There’s a relaxing poolside bar, a romantic indoor reading room, and a dining area where delicious 3-course meals are served in the evening.

Monte do Cardal - Odeceixe, Portugal

Monte do Cardal – Odeceixe, Portugal

Situated in the heart of the hillside town of Odeceixe, the Monte do Cardal is a B&B-style accommodation option for those wishing to explore the beauty and wonder of Portugal’s south-western beaches and nature resorts. Each apartment within Monte do Cardal is unique, with no two apartments featuring the same interior design. While my room at Monte do Cardal was nice, it was nothing to write home about. However, the other couples in my group said that this was their favorite night of lodging on the entire bike tour.

Pousada-Sagres Hotel

Pousada Sagres – Sagres, Portugal

Finally, the Pousada Sagres is a large, rectangular hotel situated on the cliffs looking out across the Atlantic Ocean. The building is a little dated, but there’s a large dining room and the views from the rooms at the back of the hotel (facing the water) are to die for. The Pousada Sagres was a great place to end our week-long cycling holiday with Bike Tours Portugal .

My Official Bike Tour Summary

Bike Tours Portugal has gone out of their way to orchestrate the best bike tour in all of Portugal. The company is organized and on top of everything. The booking process is a total breeze; they have high-end bikes available for you to ride (making it easy for you to simply show up in Portugal and enjoy your cycling holiday); the tour staff is friendly and knowledgeable; the food is absolutely delicious and will give you a taste of what Portuguese cuisine is all about; and the accommodations each night are charming, unique and luxurious.

Every part of the tour, from the moment you wake up in the morning to that last second before you lay your head down on your pillow at night, is so incredibly well thought out. I can’t think of even a single negative thing to say about the tour.

In the end, this bike tour in south-western Portugal isn’t just another cycling holiday where you cruise down the coast in style. It’s a 250+ kilometer bicycle touring experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life!

Monte do Cardal? You mean Casas do Moinho in Odeceixe!

Once again, the accommodation in Odeceixe is CASAS DO MOINHO, not Monte do Cardal. This should be corrected in ‘The Accommodations’.

Just returned from cycling the Portuguese Camino from Porto to Santiago del Compostelo. Wonderful experience and made easier by Follow the Camino who organised the whole thing including hotels, carriage of luggage and cycle hire. They were easy to contact and responsive to any queries both before the event and during the holiday. Would highly recommend.

We did a cycle tour with Turaventur. 5 nights at the farmhouse and guided cycles daily. The accommodation at the farmhouse is cosy with our room having a lovely balcony to relax after the daily cycle. Our guides were great and we had interesting days despite the extremely hot unseasonal weather in October. We hired electric bikes and I was very glad of this as there were lots of undulating roads. We mostly used quieter country roads. Breakfasts daily at the farmhouse were great. We also met some travellers who were on one of the companies guided tours who sounded like they had had a wonderful time . Overall I would very much recommend Turaventur if you are looking for a great cycling or other adventure.

The Douro River bike tour in Portugal by bike and boat was an unforgettable experience. We explored the countryside by bike and visited many historical places and vineyards. The overnight stays on the boat were very comfortable and the food was really delicious. The guides were also super knowledgeable and told us a lot about the region and its culture. If you want to experience Portugal from a different perspective, this trip is for you.

A memorable trip cycling the camino. Everything was perfect- hotels were great, bikes were of good standard and luggage was collected and delivered on time. We only had to focus on the cycling. I would give ten stars if this was an option.

My husband and I decided to do the Camino de Santiago in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary and we could not have picked a better outfit to help us make a very special one. We did not have a lot of time, so we decided to do the Camino on bikes. Follow el Camino were very accurate in describing what we should expect. The bikes that were delivered to our first hotel for us to use were perfectly sized and in great condition. They include the tools and spare parts necessary for the road and they came in handy. The accommodations were expertly picked, very comfortable and always close enough to the center of the action without being in the middle of it. We had a fantastic time. The only thing I would change for the next time is not to have such long rides each day to be able to spend more tine in each town.

We thoroughly enjoyed the holiday- it was a wonderful experience made more so by the great choice of guides that you have. We found the same last year with the two guides for the UK coast to coast trip. They were so helpful, when my battery failed on my own bike the guides could not have done more in terms of helping me find a new e bike so that I could continue my journey comfortably. Also, the lunches provided could not have been better and were prepared beautifully by the guides. Thank you so much for providing such a good service all round.

Every meal out as a group was well thought out and enhanced our experience, from the opening dinner in town with local wine and food to the final closing. The lunch in Elvas with the incredible view was fabulous, with well selected food. The dinner in Estremoz was incredible, with the highest quality food and presentation. And the final closing dinner with wine tour, bit of cooking on the estate, and seating at the most elaborate table with wonderful service was a lovely closing touch.

Both the tour of Evora and the tour of the cork estate were wonderful. The history of the region was central to the enjoyment and awe of the spaces we visited. Meeting and enjoying the people of the region enriched our time there.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the bakery A Padaria Portuguesa (Rua Mouzinho da Silveira 2, 1250-042 Lisbon) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. You'll then shuttle approximately two hours to your retreat oasis for the week. Please have your first-day cycling clothes and riding gear easily accessible, separate from your luggage. If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Alentejo Marmoris Hotel and Spa (+351 268 887 010), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, known as the city of seven hills, is the capital city of Portugal overflowing with great café culture, music, art, and gratuitous history. You'll be enchanted by the narrow, cobbled streets and white washed walls, ochre roofs, and colourful splashes of ceramic tiles. Be sure to walk the streets of some of the many storied neighbourhoods and certainly don't pass up a pastéis de nata, Portugal's mouthwatering custard tart. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre- and post-trip hotel:

Hassle-Free

Completely customizable, book with confidence, unbeatable support, things to know.

Embark on a self-guided cycling odyssey, designed for a tailor-crafted and adaptable getaway on two wheels, unveiling wonders at your own pace while having the freedom to alter your itinerary or path as needed. Our dedicated team meticulously handles all facets, encompassing lodging arrangements, thorough planning, GPS navigational aid, and continuous support, to gift you a tranquil and engrossing journey. This venture champions autonomy, personal expression, and genuine cultural engagements.

Our tours are segmented into three tiers of difficulty: Leisurely , Moderate , and Challenging , categorized by the usual daily routine, although there may be variations in difficulty throughout the trip.

Leisurely tours are ideal for those in pursuit of a relaxed adventure amidst stunning landscapes, without the challenge of covering long distances or tackling rough terrains. These journeys typically cover 30-50 km each day, with an elevation gain of up to 500m. This allows plenty of pauses to relish the scenic vistas, enjoy local delicacies, and explore charming villages and towns along the way.

Moderate bike tours are tailored for those seeking a beautiful blend of scenic trails and a dash of challenge. Generally covering 50-80 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 1000m, these tours traverse enchanting landscapes and delightful villages, featuring a mix of flat and rolling terrains. They not only provide ample chances to stop and explore but also ensure a satisfying cycling workout.

Challenging bike tours are meant for experienced cyclists eager to push their limits. Spanning 80-120 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 2000m, these tours entail tackling steep ascents and demanding terrains. Though these tours require a high level of fitness and endurance, the exhilarating feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day, coupled with breathtaking views, makes the endeavor thoroughly rewarding.

We are devoted to discovering the ideal match for you. We collaborate with numerous lodging providers who meet our standards, although their availability may fluctuate, especially during peak demand times. Furthermore, we can customize your vacation to align with your preferences and budget, ensuring we identify the most fitting choice for your needs.

We advise booking your tour at the earliest opportunity, especially for popular tourist destinations with limited lodging availability. Prime choices often get snapped up for the summer before spring even arrives.

Addressing dietary preferences can vary based on their complexity. In Portugal, vegetarian options are generally available, but finding vegan meals might be more challenging in rural areas or smaller towns. Notably, lunch stops are often at traditional eateries which may not cater to special dietary needs beyond their standard menu. Keep this in consideration as you plan your adventure.

The ideal cycling season in Portugal stretches from mid-April to mid-October. In elevated regions like the Serra da Estrela, it’s preferable to cycle from mid-May to September.

Tours in Portugal can continue in light rain with the appropriate clothing. Summer frequently witnesses afternoon thunderstorms, making early tour starts recommended. If challenging weather conditions are expected, we’ll strive to adjust the tour beforehand.
