Tesco has partnered with ROCK Insurance Group to manage the scheme, while ROCK has selected AXA Partners to provide the underwriting, claims handling and medical assistance services.

There are three tiers of cover available, which can be tailored with add-ons and optional extras, but all policies come with core features, including cover for medical expenses, trip cancellation or delays, as well as lost or stolen baggage or money.

Two specialist products are available aimed at backpackers and customers aged over 80-years-old.

Mark Airey, Tesco Bank’s commercial director of insurance, said: “We’re proud to expand our award-winning insurance offering to Tesco shoppers with the addition of Tesco Bank travel insurance.

“We appreciate that the immediate outlook for travel remains uncertain, however the need for travel insurance is greater than ever – whether holidaying in the UK or abroad.

”Offering Covid-19 protection as standard helps to give customers peace of mind; they are protected should they test positive and they have to cancel or cut short their trip.

“With a range of cover levels available to Tesco shoppers, we’re confident customers will find a policy that suits them and their holiday once travel at home and abroad is permitted.”

In January,  Tesco Bank announced its plans to underwrite its own home and motor insurance book.

Insurers’ duty

Antony Martin, managing director at ROCK Insurance Group, said: “ROCK is providing Tesco Bank’s customers with a wide range of travel insurance products and services that are available online or via a dedicated call centre, meaning that more people will be protected and have the confidence to travel as soon as restrictions have eased.”

Paul Moloney, sales director at AXA Partners, added: “We’re delighted to announce our new partnership with Tesco Bank to provide underwriting and other services for its new travel insurance proposition.

“It is our duty as insurers to safeguard customers’ trust, implementing solutions that provide assurance and protect what matters.

”We very much look forward to providing Tesco Bank customers with quality travel insurance cover both now and when we are free of this pandemic.”

How can travel insurance help with travel disruption and holiday cancellations?

Strikes, delays and staff shortages. A lot of our holidays have been disrupted or affected recently. If you’re worried about your travel plans and what you can do to protect your finances if something goes wrong, we’re here to help.

Why are there strikes and travel disruptions?

As restrictions on travel within and outside the UK have been lifted for the first time since early 2020, demand for travel has picked up and the pressure on the transport industry has increased. From flights to train journeys and ferry trips, we’re seeing large queues, long waits, and cancelled services for travellers.

There are staff shortages across the industry, plus strike action over pay and working conditions. All of this has caused a lot of disruption and made travelling that bit more stressful.

Cancellation, delays and baggage loss – what might be covered?

Here are some tips on what to do if you’re affected by delays, cancellations or baggage loss, including how airlines might compensate you and what you may be entitled to under a travel insurance policy.

Compensation for flight cancellations

If your flight is cancelled for reasons outside of your control and you can’t claim the cost back through your provider, travel insurance might cover some of the cost. Airlines or train companies will often compensate you for cancellations or offer alternative travel options and you should try asking for a refund first. When that’s not possible, take a look at your travel insurance policy to see what you might be covered for. If you’re flying within or to and from the EU, it might be handy to familiarise yourself with your passenger rights .

Travel cancellations and hotel bookings

Travel insurance can also help when a cancelled or delayed flight or journey have an impact on hotel stays. First you should contact your hotel or booked accommodation to ask for a refund. If they refuse to give you one, your travel insurance policy may cover you for the cost of your cancelled stay.

Travel cancellations due to COVID-19

While restrictions have been lifted and holidaymakers are able to enjoy travelling again, we know that there are still situations that might crop up due to COVID-19. Find out what Tesco Bank Travel Insurance could cover before you head away and during your trip in our guide to COVID-19 cover . Monetary limits, excesses and exclusions apply.

Travel delay

Whether the delay hits while you’re sitting on the runway or still in the comfort of the airport, a journey delay can be frustrating. Citizens Advice offer helpful information around what compensation you may be entitled to depending on the distance of your trip and the length of your delay while flying, plus compensation you could claim if you’re affected by train disruption .

If you have flight connections on the same booking that you miss due to delays, your airline should try to provide a solution for you. However, travel insurance could cover the cost of getting you to your destination where your airline can’t, along with compensation for additional costs as a result of your delay.

Baggage delay and baggage loss

Sometimes your luggage doesn’t arrive in the same destination as you. As soon as you notice your bag is missing, you should report it to your airline immediately – and aim to report it and get a lost baggage report (Property Irregularity Report) before you leave the airport. If your luggage is delayed or lost in transit, you may be able to claim compensation from your airline in the first instance. If you can’t get money back from the airline, travel insurance could cover both baggage loss and baggage delay.

Know your rights

If you find yourself affected by any delays, cancellations or losses, keep your receipts and document everything – it may come in handy down the line for any claims you make, whether that’s with your airline or a travel insurance provider.

As a customer, you may be able to make claims with the travel providers directly, so it’s important to be aware of what your rights are:

  • Air passenger rights when travelling within or to and from the EU Air passenger rights when travelling within or to and from the EU
  • Flight delay or cancellation compensation Flight delay or cancellation compensation
  • Holiday cancellations Holiday cancellations
  • Package holiday cancellation and compensation Package holiday cancellation and compensation
  • Train delay and cancellation compensation Train delay and cancellation compensation

Frequently Asked Questions

When comparing COVID-19 travel insurance options, you'll want to make sure you fully understand the coverages included in each plan. For example, you should know the policy inclusions and limits for COVID-related claims, including coverage for testing, treatments, trip cancellation or COVID-related interruptions that can occur. Meanwhile, you should understand how your coverage will work if you contract some other illness while away from home.

Also ensure your travel insurance coverage will kick in for other mishaps that occur, and that limits are sufficient for your needs. If you're planning a trip to a remote area in a country like Costa Rica or Peru , you'll want to have emergency evacuation and transportation coverage with generous limits that can pay for emergency transportation to a hospital if you need treatment.

You can also invest in a travel insurance policy that offers cancel for any reason coverage. This type of travel insurance plan lets you cancel and get a percentage of your prepaid travel expenses back for any reason, even if you just decide you're better off staying home.

It depends on your private health insurance provider and/or travel insurance policy. As of May 11, 2023, private health insurers are no longer required to cover the cost of COVID-19 testing. Out-of-pocket costs for COVID-19 test kits at local drugstores and on Amazon are relatively affordable, however.

As you search for plans that will provide sufficient coverage for your next trip, you'll find travel insurance that covers COVID-19 quarantine both inside and outside the United States. However, you'll typically need to have your condition certified by a physician in order for this coverage to apply. Also make sure your travel insurance plan includes coverage for travel claims related to COVID-19 in the first place.

Many travel insurance plans do cover trip cancellation as a result of COVID-19, although the terms vary widely. You typically need to be certified by a physician in order to prove your condition. Disinclination to travel because of COVID-19 – such as fear of exposure to illness – will generally not be covered. This means you will actually have to test positive for coronavirus for benefits to apply; simply not wanting to travel is not a sufficient reason to make a claim.

If you want more flexibility in your COVID-19 travel insurance, ensuring you have a cancel for any reason policy may be your best bet, but be sure to check with your chosen travel insurance provider to assess your options.

An overview of the best travel insurance for covid , top travel insurance for covid options , additional resources for covid-19 travel insurance shoppers.

No matter how well you prepare, travel plans don’t always go as expected. Some travelers buy travel insurance to protect their investment in prepaid travel costs. Amid the ongoing pandemic, exploring travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage is recommended. With the right policy, you can protect yourself if you need to cancel your trip or end it early due to illness. Many insurers offer travel insurance policies with this kind of coverage.

This is the shortlist of the best travel insurance for COVID options:

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection .

John Hancock Insurance Agency, Inc.

Seven Corners .

Travelex Insurance Services .

We used the following factors to choose insurance providers to highlight in our best travel insurance for COVID list:

Range of coverage: We looked at how many plans each company offered with COVID-19 coverage, plus the range of available plans.

Depth of coverage: We compared the maximum caps for trip cancellation and trip interruption claims between carriers and plans.

Medical benefits: We examined whether plans included emergency medical benefits for COVID-19 reasons and whether plans included medical evacuation and repatriation benefits.

Cost: We determined an average cost for shoppers to benchmark plan prices by looking at the basic coverage costs for plans with COVID-19 benefits across multiple companies.

We looked at quotes from various companies for a six-night trip in May 2023 to Croatia. The traveler was 30 years old, from Texas and planned to spend $1,500 on the trip, including airfare.

On average, the price of each company’s most basic coverage plan with COVID-19 coverage was $47.22. The prices listed below are for the most basic COVID-19 travel insurance coverage. All insurers offer multiple COVID-19 policies with greater coverage coming at a higher cost.
