Kuwait Tours 2024-2025

Young Pioneers Tour are pleased to offer our 2024 and 2025 Kuwait Tours and Travel packages.

A real crossroads of old and new, Kuwait offers ancient Arabic and Greek sites, combined with one of the most modern cities in the world, this is not a regular destination!

Often overlooked by western visitors, there is much more to a Kuwait tour than merely ticking of the country – so why not join a YPT trip to Kuwait to see it all firsthand?

KUWAIT TOURS – GROUP TOURS TO KUWAIT

YPT have been organizing group tours to Kuwait since 2018, when we first entered Saudi Arabia. These Kuwaiti Group Tours are usually combined with Saudi Arabia, but can be done as standalone, or combined with other destinations (see below).

Our tours are capped at 16; this is to ensure you have a great trip and are not merely herded around like cattle. As we say group tours to Kuwait for people who hate group tours.

Kuwait City Persian Gulf Tour – 13th-16th October 2024- $695

Kuwait City Persian Gulf Tour

K uwait City Highlights Tour – 5th – 8th February 2025 – $695

Kuwait City Highlights Tour

Did we mention we like Kuwait City? This tour features all of the main sites that we usually take in, but much more importantly this Kuwait tour can also be combined with Iraq as well as Saudi Arabia , as our tours to these destinations run directly before and after our Kuwait tours.

Tours can also be combined with other Middle-Eastern destinations, such as Iran.

We’re currently working on tours to Kuwait in 2025 and beyond, so bookmark this page or follow on our various social media pages for updates on travel to Kuwait.

KUWAIT INDEPENDENT TOURS

Recently, there has been a huge demand for our independent Kuwait tours as it builds a bridge between our popular Middle Eastern destinations. YPT can cater for your requirements to create a personalised itinerary to fit into your schedule.

Your bespoke itinerary can be taken care of by YPT, we just need to know your timeframe, interests, and the level of accommodation you like and where would like to eat and drink – these factors and your group size will reflect on our competitive prices.

Our independent Kuwaiti tours can be combined with our group tours to Iraq, Iran, Socotra Island (Yemen), Syria, as well as Lebanon tours, both group and independent. Simply let us know your requirements and we will work around your travel plans to Kuwait and beyond.

Independent Kuwait Tour Itinerary

With Kuwait’s fascinating history, from Mesopotamia to the recent the Iraqi Invasion, and its mega cities born from its lucrative oil resources, there’s so much to see and do in the country.

YPT can create a unique experience for you or your group in Kuwait. See our example Kuwait itinerary:

Day 1 – Kuwait City

  • Arrival into Kuwait City, we can arrange to collect you at the airport.
  • Head out for a stroll near the harbour for dinner and discuss your personalised itinerary.
  • Overnight at hotel

Day 2 – Failaka Island

  • Breakfast at hotel and pick up in our private transport to the ferry dock
  • 9:00am departure on ferry for an hour cruising along the harbour front of Kuwait before reaching the forgotten Failaka island
  • Visit the Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Palace – the eleventh ruler of Kuwait, built out of sea rocks and mud. Portraits of all the former rulers of Kuwait are displayed in the majestic foyer.
  • We’ll then head to the location where the Failaka battle took place
  • Explore around an old resort on the island damaged during the war and completely abandoned
  • We’ll have lunch on the island at a nearby café.
  • Visit what remains of the former Bank al Watani – one of the most war damaged yet standing buildings on the island.
  • Head to the tank graveyard. Discarded Soviet tanks, APCs, artilleries, military trucks and vehicles left behind by Saddam’s military.
  • Drop by the heritage village to see how villagers lived on the island before the invasion.
  • Board the 4:00pm ferry back to mainland and dropped off at hotel.
  • Head out downtown for dinner.
  • Overnight at hotel.

Day 3 – Kuwait City

  • Visit the National Museum which houses the knowledge of the Arabian Peninsula, the geography, history and civilization.

  • Lunch in the city
  • Visit the must-see museum of Kuwait, which is not for the faint-hearted, the Al-Qurain Martyrs House which depicts the Iraqi invasion during the Gulf War. One of the documents on display is an official order found in an Iraqi vehicle instructing troops to “burn and destroy all homes on which there were slogans hostile to our leadership.”
  • Make a special visit to the Ahmad Al Jaber Oil & Gas Exhibition – named after Kuwait’s 10th ruler from 1921 to 1950, it was during his reign that the birth of Kuwait’s oil industry began. The exhibition explains and shows in great detail the formation of oil, to its discovery and all of the ways that oil products are produced today.
  • Watch the sunset from the top of Kuwait Towers with great views over the city

“ Amazing! A really informative day. ”

We had a great experience with Waleed! He told us a lot of great information and facts. He really did know everything! We were unlucky that some of the things we wanted to see were closed for Ramadan but he more than made up for it. Really loved going across the causeway and visiting the souk. 10/10!

Places to Visit in Kuwait City on a 1-2 Day Kuwait Itinerary!

Categories Itinerary , Kuwait , Middle East

If you’ve looked into places to visit in Kuwait already for your Kuwait itinerary you’ll probably know that there isn’t that much to do in this Gulf Country, despite is being much bigger than Bahrain and Qatar for example. In fact, the whole city and many of the best things to do in Kuwait can be seen in 1 day in Kuwait and if you visit more of the museums in Kuwait and malls in Kuwait, it could take you 2 days in Kuwait.

With that said, there is more to Kuwait than Kuwait City like the Desert, Beaches and Islands but you will need your own transport to get to them. So in this Kuwait travel blog and Kuwait city blog, I am going to focus on how to see Kuwait as a tourist and help you with places to visit in Kuwait city.

In this Kuwait travel guide, I have also detailed accommodation in Kuwait, how to get around Kuwait and the best time to visit Kuwait!

Places To Visit in Kuwait

Find What You're Looking For Easily Here!

How to get around Kuwait.

To really see Kuwait, like in many other Middle Eastern Countries, you will need your own transport. However, to get around Kuwait city easily you can catch a taxi and use Uber no problem and this will help you see all of these places to see in Kuwait City noted in this post.

City Bus Kuwait is the best way to get around Kuwait on a budget though and although the bus driver may drive a bit erratically and barely stop as you get off, the bus system in Kuwait city is actually quite good and extremely cheap due to it being government-run. You can buy a 1 day city bus Kuwait pass for 1KD / £2.50 / $3.30.

There’s a City Bus Kuwait App which you can download and this website is very helpful in giving the bus routes around Kuwait city.

Kuwait City Bus also connects the airport with Kuwait city and downtown Kuwait so be sure to look into this when working out how to get to your hotels in Kuwait.

On this point, if you would like to see more of the local Kuwaiti life and what it might be like to be one of the ex-pats in Kuwait, I’d recommend looking on Couch Surfing .

Kuwait Itinerary.

1 day in kuwait.

I recommend starting your first day in Kuwait by the  Scientific Centre Kuwait . From here you will see an amazing view of Downtown Kuwait across the water in the distance and there are kilometres of the pedestrian boardwalk you can walk, or hire a bike, down making it an enjoyable way to see the city and be by the ocean. This point definitely offers the best view of Kuwait city for free!

places to visit in kuwait, view from scientific centre kuwait

Walk all the way down to the Kuwait Marina and Marina Mall . This is the new marina in Kuwait and it has a public beach. Its’ easily one of the top places to visit in Kuwait city for tourists.

places to visit in kuwait, Kuwait Marina Beach

If you are hungry there are plenty of restaurants in Marina Mall however I recommend visiting  Fareej Swalieh . There are a few of these restaurants in Kuwait, the name on the sign is in Arabic but if you go behind Marina Mall and find M&S along the road, you will see a restaurant with lots of flags outside and seating outside. This is a good Kuwaiti restaurant with reasonable prices and therefore one of the best places to visit in Kuwait.

Watch my Kuwait YouTube Vlog here to see exactly where this restaurant is!

places to visit in kuwait, Kuwait food

For more ideas of what to do in Kuwait city, there is a boat trip ticket office around Marina Mall but this boat trip is so expensive at 20KD / £50.00 / $65.00. If you want to see the city from the water I recommend going to the old Marina which is what I did. It is down the road but the pedestrian walkway stops so you should probably get a taxi or a bus down the road.

Aim to go to The Sultan Jeans Grill and this is where the old Marina of Kuwait is and you can get a boat trip to see Kuwait city for just 1KD which lasts about 30 minutes and I’d really recommend doing this on your Kuwait itinerary!

From either Marina, you will need to get a taxi, uber or bus to take you to the Kuwait Towers as it is too far to walk.

The Kuwait Towers are probably the most visited Kuwait city attractions and definitely the most popular place to visit in Kuwait! They are cool to see from the ground and there is a little beach next to them. There is also a water amusement park which opens up for the warmer months of the year, the waterpark in Kuwait would be one of the great things to do in with children in Kuwait.

For an observatory in Kuwait and a Kuwait viewpoint, you can go up one of the Kuwait Tower which is especially at sunset so I would recommend going up there for 3KD.

places to visit in kuwait, Kuwait Towers

If you follow this Kuwait itinerary and visit the Kuwait Towers for sunset, next get a taxi to the Grand Mosque in Kuwait which is the biggest and the official Mosque of Kuwait, it’s extremely impressive from the inside and is in the top 10 places to visit in Kuwait. You’ll now be in Downtown Kuwait and also close to Sief Palace .

I did a tour of the Grand Mosque in Kuwait city which I recommend. It lasts about 25 minutes, it’s free and is a good way to see and learn about the mosque and Islam with an English speaking guide.

The tours are on from Sunday to Thursday at 5:00 pm, 5:30 pm, 6:00 pm & 6:30 pm .

places to visit in kuwait, inside Kuwait Grand Mosque

One thing you should know about Kuwait, and this is similar in many Middle Eastern cities and countries is that places come alive in the evening, especially in the summer when day time temperatures are extremely hot. So doing your Kuwait sightseeing in the evening is perfectly normal here.

On this note – Kuwait is extremely safe. It’s one of the safest countries in the world in fact so do not be worried about walking around at night and if you are visiting Kuwait as a woman, don’t worry at all.

From the Grand Mosque, you can walk to the many souqs in Kuwait in the Downtown area and these are definitely good places to visit in Kuwait to see local life and eat some more local food. Souq Al Mubarkiya  is a huge souq in Kuwait and you can walk around it for a while and it will change from being outdoors, indoors, selling food to clothes to everything else. I really loved it here because it seems it’s where the old and new Kuwait mix.

To end your 1 day in Kuwait I recommend heading to Al Shaheed Park which you can walk to from Mubarkiya.

I didn’t seem to take any photos here so check out my YouTube video to see the souq!

Al Shaheed Park is a beautiful, new and modern park. At night it is all lit up and it gives an amazing view of the city skyline too. There are fountains with regular light shows and places to sit. Visiting here really gives an insight into what the people are like in Kuwait and the lifestyle in Kuwait and is a good place to visit when thinking about what to do in Kuwait.

places to visit in kuwait, Al Shaheed Park

2 Days in Kuwait

More places to visit in kuwait..

With 1 or 2 more days in Kuwait you could visit the National Museum of Kuwait which is huge and my friends in Kuwait said you could easily spend half a day in there, if not a full day so keep this in mind when planning your Kuwait itinerary.

Kuwait loves its malls so visiting one of the many malls in Kuwait is technically one of the local things to do in Kuwait in my opinion.

For the best shopping mall in Kuwait, head to The Avenues because it is the second biggest mall in the Middle East after Dubai Mall however my friends say that by length, it is bigger so it’s one of the popular places to visit in Kuwait!

Green Island is in between the Marina and the Kuwait Towers so it is easy for tourists to visit and get to in Kuwait. This is a popular place for locals to hang out and have a picnic outside for dinner.

Kuwait has many islands but the most popular island in Kuwait to visit is Failaka Island because here you can see a lot of what the old Kuwait used to be like. You can get a ferry over here and a car ferry over but it is still harder, especially as a solo traveller to Kuwait.

Best Time to Visit Kuwait.

The summers in Kuwait get extremely hot and can get up to 50c which even the locals can’t deal with! High Season in Kuwait is, therefore, February and March.

I was in Kuwait for New Year and the temperature was perfect, it was a little chilly but with really nice winter sun, cooling down a lot in the evening. Kuwaiti’s love the winter.

The best months to visit Kuwait are Autumn and Spring.

Hotels in Kuwait.

There are no hostels in Kuwait which is a shame and I’m sure puts travellers off visiting. There is also limited budget accommodation in Kuwait too, you are not likely to get anything less than £50.00 plus taxis per night, but here are some hotels in Kuwait I would recommend based on their location in Kuwait City. I would say that Downtown Kuwait is best so you can do this Kuwait itinerary and see these Kuwait tourist attractions:

Hotels in Downtown Kuwait

City Tower Hotel – $

Vera House & Hotel – $

Ibis Sharq – $$

Residence Inn by Marriott Kuwait – $$

Adam’s Hotel – $$$

Four Points by Sheraton Kuwait – $$$

To visit Kuwait on a budget, and to get a better look at local life, I recommend Couch Surfing in Kuwait.

Hope you're fine

I was looking for some information about how is Kuwait and places to visit during Eid al-Fitr 2023 and I was wondering if you could help me. I'm not muslin and I just want to visit the country and the tourist places. Do you think them will be open during Eid? Do you think is a good time to visit the country?

TheWanderingQuinn

Hello, thank you for reading my post. Yes, I think Kuwait will be fine to visit during Ramadan as there are so many expats and non-Muslims who live there all year round so many food places and attractions are open. You may find some places have shorter opening hours during the day than outside of Ramadan but the plus to that is the so much will be open and alive in the evening so I'd suggest to plan your days around being out in the evening and I'm sure you'll really enjoy it :)

Thursday 6th of February 2020

Thank you so much for the recommendations. I’m building up my itinerary for my 2 day trip here. Your YouTube video has so far been the most informative and interesting that I have watched so far!

Sunday 9th of February 2020

Hello Aysha! Thank you for letting me know, I'm so pleased to hear that! Have a great time there!

Kuwait Food

When you travel to Kuwait, you want to know more about it, to explore its culture and history, taste the food locals eat, go to the places locals go, see how they live, or in other words, you want to feel what it is like to be local. Food Tours are a vehicle for a city’s culture. What locals eat, when, where and how much is a window into their every day and therefore, into the country’s way of life.

Several museums in Kuwait showcase the country’s history, its art, artifacts, archeological findings and even information on the Gulf War. However, there is one exceptional museum that stands out for its depiction of the exquisiteness and custom encompassed in Bedouin crafts, namely Sadu weaving. The Sadu House is a beautiful, traditional Kuwaiti styled house where visitors can discover the Bedouin art of weaving, its styles and history. Located right next to the National Museum of Kuwait on the Gulf Road, Bait Al Sadu (Sadu House) was formerly an old Kuwaiti house that’s been converted into a cultural center.

The Grand mosque is internationally renowned for its Islamic architecture and it has become one of Kuwait's most treasured landmarks. Indeed, the builders and designers have put a lot of effort in creating this mosque starting the project way back in 1979 and finally completing it seven years later in 1986 at a cost of about KD 14 million. Alseif Palace

The Seif Palace is popular among local and overseas visitors as the home of the royal family. Nevertheless, they might be surprised to find out that this palace does not get much used by the Monarch and the government. While it is true that this palace is designated to the Emir dynasty, the household personally chose to stay in Bayan Palace which is known as the official house of the Emir and this is also the place where the monarch would entertain his dignitaries. Therefore, the Seif palace only serves as the court if there are special celebrations and events, or if the Bayan Palace is not available. However, thousands of travelers every year go to see this fine building.

Al Qurain Martyrs Museum

The Al-Qurain Martyrs' Museum exists of three neighboring villas. On 24 February 1991, 19 young Kuwaiti men from the "Messila" resistance group had armed themselves and were preparing a strike against the invading Iraqi army. While the men were discussing their plan, an Iraqi patrol unit was in the area and eventually checked on one of the three houses in which the resistance group congregated. The two sides then engaged in a ten-hour battle. Heavily outnumbered and underarmed, the Kuwaiti men were eventually defeated by Iraqi tanks and soldiers. Of the nineteen men, seven were severely wounded and twelve died.

Explore the GCC with the Grand Tours Visa: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Oman & Bahrain

In a significant development for the Gulf region, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has unveiled plans for a unified tourist visa that will facilitate travel across its member states.

This new initiative, named the “GCC Grand Tours,” is set to become operational by the end of 2024, offering travelers the opportunity to explore all six Gulf countries with ease.

The announcement was made by the United Arab Emirates Minister of Economy, Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, during the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), signaling a concerted effort to enhance tourism in the region.

The introduction of the GCC Grand Tours visa aims to simplify travel procedures and promote economic growth through increased tourism activity.

One of the primary objectives of the GCC Grand Tours visa is to unleash the full tourism potential of the Gulf region. With its diverse landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and modern attractions, the Gulf has much to offer to travelers from around the world.

By allowing visitors to explore multiple countries within a single trip, the unified visa is expected to attract a record number of tourists.

Authorities in the UAE have projected that the GCC Grand Tours visa could lead to a substantial increase in visitor numbers, with estimates reaching 128.7 million by 2030.

The implementation of the Gulf Schengen is set to enhance regional connectivity and strengthen ties among member states. By facilitating seamless travel, the unified visa will promote greater interaction and collaboration across various sectors, including tourism, trade, and investment.

Moreover, it will position the Gulf region as a premier destination for travelers seeking diverse experiences and authentic cultural encounters.

The GCC Grand Tours visa represents a major step toward enhanced integration and prosperity in the Gulf region. By streamlining travel procedures and tapping into the tourism potential of its member states, the Gulf Cooperation Council is paving the path for a brighter future with ample opportunities for growth and development.

The advantages of solo travel with group tour operators.

Solo travel is on the rise.

Traveling solo is a profoundly liberating experience. It offers the freedom to explore at one's own pace, delve into personal interests, and embrace new cultures without compromise. However, navigating international destinations alone can sometimes be daunting. This is where group tour operators come in, providing a structured yet flexible travel experience that ensures safety, companionship, and deep cultural immersion. Trafalgar Tours is one operator that attracts a large number of solo travelers.

The Benefits of Group Tours for Solo Travelers

Traveling solo, but with a tour operator, provides comfort and security.

1. Safety and Security:

Traveling solo can occasionally raise concerns about personal safety, especially in unfamiliar territories. Group tours offer the reassurance of a structured itinerary, professional guides, and a group of fellow travelers. This structure minimizes the risks associated with solo travel, such as getting lost or encountering unsafe situations.

Travelers make meaningful connections with other travelers when on a group tour.

2. Social Interaction and Companionship:

One of the challenges of solo travel is the potential for loneliness. Group tours provide an instant social network of like-minded travelers. This social aspect can enrich the travel experience, fostering new friendships and shared memories. For solo travelers, this means not only having companions to share the journey with but also the chance to connect deeply with people from diverse backgrounds.

3. Expert Guidance and Local Insights:

Group tours are typically led by knowledgeable guides who are experts in the local culture, history, and geography. This expertise provides solo travelers with valuable insights that might be missed when traveling independently. Guides can offer recommendations, translate languages, and navigate cultural nuances, enhancing the overall travel experience.

4. Convenience and Peace of Mind:

Planning an international trip can be overwhelming, with logistics, accommodations, and activities to organize. Group tour operators handle these details, allowing solo travelers to focus on enjoying their trip. This convenience is particularly beneficial for those new to solo travel or visiting a country with complex logistics.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, the appeal of shoulder season travel.

The appeal of shoulder season is cheaper tours, less crowds but still plenty of fun.

Booking a tour during the shoulder season—the period between peak and off-peak seasons—has distinct advantages, especially for solo travelers. Tour operators have more availability and the group size is smaller—in some cases half the size—during shoulder season.

1. Fewer Crowds:

Shoulder season typically sees fewer tourists compared to the peak season. This means less crowded attractions, more personal space, and a more relaxed travel experience. Solo travelers can enjoy popular sites without the overwhelming crowds, making it easier to connect with the destination and fellow travelers.

2. Better Value:

Traveling during the shoulder season often means lower prices for flights, accommodations, and tours. Group tour operators, including Trafalgar, may offer discounts or special deals during these times, making it a cost-effective option for solo travelers.

3. Pleasant Weather:

Shoulder seasons often offer milder weather, avoiding the extremes of summer heat or winter cold. For instance, traveling to Vietnam in the shoulder season means pleasant temperatures, making outdoor activities more enjoyable.

Picking a Destination

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in northern Vietnam.

There are so many places to go, but for many travelers it’s hard to narrow down the list. For solo travelers, picking a far-flung local like Asia, is appealing because it’s something many people want to do but it seems daunting to go so far alone. One of Trafalgar’s most popular itineraries in Asia is Vietnam.

1. Immersive Cultural Experiences:

Trafalgar’s Vietnam tour is designed to provide deep cultural immersion. Travelers have the opportunity to explore bustling cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, visit historical sites such as the Cu Chi Tunnels, and experience the serene beauty of Halong Bay. These experiences are enriched by knowledgeable guides who share the stories behind each destination.

Hoi An in Vietnam is a favorite city for many travelers because it's so picturesque.

2. Unique Insider Experiences:

One of Trafalgar’s standout features is its “Be My Guest” experiences, where travelers are invited into the homes of local families to share a meal and learn about their way of life.

3. Hassle-Free Travel:

Trafalgar takes care of all the logistics, from accommodations to transportation and activities. For solo travelers, this means less time worrying about details and more time enjoying the journey. Accommodations are selected for their quality and location, ensuring comfort and convenience throughout the trip.

4. Social Atmosphere:

The group dynamic on Trafalgar tours fosters a sense of community. Solo travelers are welcomed into a friendly, inclusive environment where connections are easily made. Whether sharing a meal, exploring a market, or enjoying a guided tour, the shared experiences create lasting bonds.

5. Flexible Options for Solo Travelers:

Trafalgar understands the needs of solo travelers and offers options like single room supplements to ensure privacy and comfort. Additionally, their small group tours are ideal for those who prefer a more intimate travel experience.

Where was “Shōgun” filmed? Discover the real locations in Japan & beyond that inspired the show’s filming locations

Shōgun , a fictional TV show about life in 17th-century Japan, has us dreaming of our next trip to Japan . But did you know that most of Shōgun’s filming locations are actually in British Columbia—with a sprinkling of UK shots, too? That means we’re also craving immersive Canada tours and London tours ! If the Shōgun series has inspired you to plan your next trip, read on to find out which tours can bring you closer to the places you might have only seen on your TV screens.

What’s the 2024 show Shōgun about?

This beautifully shot historical drama based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell has been compared to Game of Thrones . That’s because the story is a fictional take on 17th-century Japan and the political dynamics that led to the founding of the Tokugawa Shōgunate, the military government that led Japan until 1868. Both the intrigue and gorgeous scenery have captivated audiences since the series debuted in early 2024. It’s also become one of the TV shows that has inspired travel enthusiasts as they plan future trips. It’s yet another example of how set jetting is influencing the way we travel.

What’s set jetting?

During today’s golden age of television, a great series doesn’t just transport us through impeccable storytelling, it also inspires our wanderlust. You may have heard of one of the latest trends in travel called set jetting, where you travel to the stunning destinations featured in your favorite shows, movies, and books. Whether you explore the historic Old Town of Dubrovnik featured in Game of Thrones or walk through the expansive Scottish moors seen in Outlander , some of the most sought-after travel experiences are tied to the scenes we’re seeing on our screens. Next on our list are the atmospheric and dramatic places that Shōgun filming locations can take us to. Here are some itineraries—including Japanese tours , London tours , and Canada tours —that will bring your Shōgun fantasy to life.

The 7 best new orleans cemetery tours.

Best New Orleans Cemetery Tours

Best New Orleans Cemetery Tours

Getty Images

Of all the city's attractions , New Orleans' cemeteries are a one-stop shop for learning about family traditions, history, Voodoo, jazz music and burial practices for above-ground tombs. However, some cemeteries, such as St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, require you to join a guided tour to visit. These tours differ from New Orleans' ghost tours , which tell spooky stories of NOLA's legendary spirits and visit haunted spots around the city.

To help you select which tour is right for you, U.S. News created this list of the best New Orleans cemetery tours, informed by both expert and traveler opinion. No matter which outing you choose, you're sure to have a ghoulishly good time.

Cemetery Tours NOLA – The Official Tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

Price: Adults from $25; kids from $18 Duration: 45 minutes

If you want to see the inside of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, this tour is the only way to walk through the premises (it's not open to the general public). Licensed guides delve into the unique burial customs and above-ground crypts found throughout the famous 18th-century cemetery. Among the tombs you'll spot are those belonging to Voodoo queen Marie Laveau, numerous New Orleans city mayors, as well as Homer Plessy (plaintiff in the United States Supreme Court decision Plessy v. Ferguson). Reviewers appreciate that the cemetery is restricted to guided tours and praise the experienced and humorous guides for their vast knowledge of the cemetery and the city in general.

Tours depart daily every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Advance reservations are recommended. Groups are limited to 20 guests per tour.

You'll learn all about the elaborate tomb styles and the cemetery's history as a former racetrack on this tour. Reviewers say this experience is led by passionate guides, who provide an informative, respectful and fun experience. Tourgoers also praise the guides' fact-based storytelling.

This tour is accessible and conducted on paved pathways. Save Our Cemeteries also operates tours of St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 and St. Roch Cemetery, among others.

NOLA Ghost Riders – Cemetery Bus Tour

Price: Adults from $45; kids from $30 Duration: 2 hours

Explore the city's storied past under the cover of darkness with this nighttime cemetery and ghost tour from NOLA Ghost Riders. Unlike other tours that focus on a single cemetery, this bus tour takes you to several of the city's most famous cemeteries, and participants ages 21 and older can bring their own alcohol along for the ride. Reviewers describe the experience as fun, thanks to the insightful, entertaining guides. However, a few travelers warn that intoxicated tourgoers can hamper the fun.

Tours depart nightly at 5, 8 and 11 p.m., though the 5 p.m. tour is usually available Friday to Sunday only. NOLA Ghost Riders also operates a ghost walking tour and a cemetery walking tour, among others.

Trips depart at noon Monday and Friday. There are also private versions of this tour. For even more thrills, check out the company's ghost-hunting tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cemetery tours are popular in New Orleans because cemeteries here are unlike most cemeteries in the U.S. Many of the departed are buried above ground in tombs that range from simple to ornate. Plus, these sites are reportedly haunted, making cemeteries all the more popular with ghost hunters.

There are some cemeteries you can visit on your own. Others, such as St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, can only be viewed on an official tour. It's a good idea to find out whether your cemetery requires a tour guide before your visit; call the cemetery or speak with your hotel's concierge.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the most famous cemetery in the city. In part, this is because of the numerous important figures buried here. It's also the oldest existing cemetery in New Orleans; in fact, people are still laid to rest here each year.

Voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau, activist Homer Plessy, writer Anne Rice and Popeyes founder Al Copeland are just a few of the celebrities buried in the most famous cemeteries in New Orleans. There are other famous individuals (such as politician Huey Long and musician Fats Domino) who are buried in other sites around the city. Actor Nicolas Cage will also be buried here; he has already built a pyramid tomb for himself in St. Louis Cemetery No 1.
