Written by Karen Hastings Updated Apr 6, 2023

Crowned by the towering twin volcanic peaks of the Pitons, St. Lucia is the beauty queen of the Caribbean. Crescent-shaped beaches, small fishing villages, rainforests, reefs, waterfalls, geothermal attractions, and lush mountains are just some of St. Lucia's many attractions.

Soufriere Bay, Saint Lucia

Castries , the island's capital and cruise ship port, offers a colorful slice of St. Lucian life. Shop at its lively market, and stop to snap some photos of its fascinating historic landmarks. At Morne Fortune and Pigeon Island National Park , you can learn about the history of the island's many battles between the French and English, who fought savagely for its possession.

Adventure seekers will find plenty of things to do on St. Lucia . Ziplining, climbing the Pitons, hiking the many marked nature trails, horseback riding, sightseeing cruises, and exploring the island's active volcano are popular island activities. Diving is excellent on the west side of St. Lucia, with a rich diversity of corals, sponges, and reef fish.

After all the action, you can relax under rustling palms on St. Lucia's golden beaches or soak in the island's healing hot springs. For more ideas on beautiful places to visit on this idyllic island, read our list of the top attractions and things to do in St. Lucia.

Marigot Bay

Snorkeling and diving in anse chastanet marine national park, hiking the tet paul nature trail, morne coubaril historical adventure park, sulphur springs park scenic drive, mount soufriere, diamond falls botanical gardens, waterfall & mineral baths, soufrière estate, pigeon island national park, hiking the enbas saut waterfall trail: edmund rain forest reserve, morne fortuné, shopping at castries market, mamiku gardens, derek walcott square, saint lucia - climate chart.

The Pitons

Part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Pitons Management Area , the Pitons are St. Lucia's twin towering peaks and prime topographic features. These distinctive peaks soar out of the sea to great heights. The Gros Piton (large piton) to the south is 798 meters high, and the Petit Piton (small piton) is 750 meters high.

Formed by volcanic activity about 200,000 to 300,000 years ago, both the Pitons are considered difficult climbs. If you're a diver, you can explore them as underwater cliffs. However, most visitors simply view them from afar for their scenic beauty.

Wondering where to catch the best view of the Pitons in St. Lucia? The colorful fishing village of Soufriere affords a panoramic vista of the twin peaks – especially from the Tet Paul Nature Trail.

Some hotels also boast breathtaking views of them, including the luxurious Anse Chastanet and adults-only Jade Mountain Resort.

Marigot Bay

Marigot Bay is arguably the most beautiful bay on St. Lucia. It is best viewed from a vista point on the road between the main Caribbean coastal route and the bay itself. Lush hillsides plunge to the pretty palm-fringed beach, and yachts bob on the bay's blue waters.

The harbor is so deep and sheltered that the British fleet supposedly hid here from the French by covering their masts with palm fronds.

Marigot Bay was also the setting for the 1967 film Doctor Doolittle , a claim to fame that has left a permanent mark on the names of some of the local establishments.

Water shuttles ferry visitors across the bay to St. Lucia hotels on the opposite side. If you want to base yourself here, the luxury Marigot Bay Resort and Marina has lovely views of yachts bristling in the bay amid the green hills.

Diving in Anse Chastanet Marine National Park

Anse Chastanet coral reef harbors a treasure trove of sea life. On a plateau of two to eight meters, divers can see colored sponges, soft corals, boulder coral, and brain corals. Frogfish inhabit a large nearby cavern, and divers may spot many varieties of fish in the coral gardens, including parrotfish, goatfish, wrasse, chromis, and barracudas.

The edge of the plateau is a wall that drops 46 meters to a lace coral ecosystem inhabited by lobsters, crabs, and eels. Plate coral starts below 30 meters.

Above the surface, Anse Chastanet is a sheltered beach with beautiful views of the Pitons.

About a 10-minute walk from here, Anse Mamin is less crowded, with a lovely secluded feel and great snorkeling.

Tet Paul Nature Trail

Looking for a break from the sun, sand, and sea? Thanks to the island's dramatic topography, hiking in St. Lucia can be especially rewarding, and the Tet Paul Nature Trail, near Soufrière, offers some of the most spectacular views in southern St. Lucia.

Winding through tropical forest in St. Lucia's World Heritage-listed Pitons Management Area , this easy to moderate hike takes about 45 minutes. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Martinique and St. Vincent.

Along the gentle trail, you can learn about medicinal plants and trees, sample exotic tropical fruits, and discover the traditional Amerindian art of cassava production. You'll see plenty of pineapples growing along the way as well. The highlight is the "stairway to heaven," steep steps leading up to a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.

Note that you have to pay a small entrance fee to hike the trail.

Soufrière

Guarded over by the towering Pitons, the colorful fishing village of Soufrière wraps around a beautiful bay. This quintessential St. Lucian village lies about an hour's drive south of the capital, Castries, and makes a great base for a couple of days to explore the nearby attractions.

Founded in about 1745, Soufriere has an interesting history. Its main claim to fame is that Josephine, the wife of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, was born here in 1763. But Soufriere's history also has a grisly side - the town square was the site of the guillotine erected during the French Revolution in 1780, and many plantation owners and their families were executed here.

If you're headed out on a sightseeing tour, be sure to stop by the town square and see the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary , with its striking azure accents. You'll also notice many colorful buildings in town with filigreed balconies and tin roofs.

Other things to see and do around Soufriere include hiking the spectacular Tet Paul Nature Trail , visiting Sulphur Springs Park , and strolling through the Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens . If you prefer something a little more laid-back, you can bask on the pretty palm-lined Anse Mamin beach .

Soufriere is also the best base if you want to tackle the tough hikes up the Pitons - the Gros Piton Nature Trail or the Petit Piton Trail.

For a beautiful view over Soufriere and its deep blue bay, head to the overlook on the main road to Vieux Fort.

Morne Coubaril Historical Adventure Park

Overlooking Soufriere Bay, Morne Coubaril Historical Adventure Park is a popular stop on the tourist circuit. True to its name, this 18th-century estate offers a mix of history, culture, and adventure.

Cocoa, coconuts, and manioc are grown here, and you can take a tour around this working plantation, its tropical gardens, and a replica of a traditional village. Guides demonstrate the processing of coconut for food products and show how sugar cane syrup, cocoa, coffee, and manioc are produced. After the tour, you can enjoy Creole food at the plantation's restaurant.

Looking for something more adventurous? Ziplining in view of the Pitons is the most adventurous activity on offer, and plantation tours on horseback are also available. You can also opt for a horseback ride through the rain forest, to the volcano, and along a nearby beach.

Sulphur Springs Park Scenic Drive, Mount Soufriere

Named for the sulfur once mined at this site, Mount Soufriere (also known as Sulphur Springs Park) is the most active geothermal area in the Lesser Antilles. A road traverses the edge of the 274-meter crater making it possible to actually drive in a volcano - one of the most unique things to do in St. Lucia.

Though the last major volcanic eruption in St. Lucia occurred about 40,000 years ago, this volcanic pit continues to vent sulfur into the air, and heat pools of water above boiling.

You can view the bubbling pools and hissing fumaroles from observation platforms. After exploring the park, you can soak in some nearby therapeutic springs and take a mud bath. Make sure you wear an old swimsuit!

Diamond Falls

The Diamond Falls section of the Soufrière Estate offers three popular attractions: well-conceived gardens, a beautiful waterfall colored by mineral deposits, and healing mineral hot spring baths originally built for the troops of King Louis the XVI of France.

The gardens were planted among coconut, cocoa, mahogany, and red cedar trees, with shrubs and tropical flowers from around the world, including orchids, heliconias, hibiscus, and anthurium. You'll also see educational displays of local fruits & vegetables, such as christophine, soursop, and dasheen.

For a small fee, you can also use the soothing outside pools or private bathhouses.

Another attraction of this historic estate is the Old Mill Restaurant, where visiting groups are served a Caribbean buffet.

Pigeon Island National Park

Across from Rodney Bay, Pigeon Island National Park is one of St. Lucia's most important historic attractions. Strategic lookouts on the island allowed the British to monitor the movements of French troops in Martinique during their struggle for control of St. Lucia.

Today, a causeway connects the island to the mainland, and you can hike up to the lookout point and enjoy panoramic views of St. Lucia's northwest coast.

Also on the island are the ruins of the military buildings used during battles between the French and English, an interpretation center describing the island's fascinating history, a small restaurant , and two white-sand beaches .

You can access Pigeon Island via taxi or, if you're staying at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian, the island is only a seven-minute stroll away.

Rodney Bay at sunset

On the Gros Islet northern end of St. Lucia, Rodney Bay is a tourist hub. Beach lovers can bask on the man-made crescent-shaped beach, and this is also where you'll find many St. Lucia resorts, restaurants, and shops. After dark, Rodney Bay Village turns into a hot spot for nightlife.

Enclosed to the north by Pigeon Island National Park and to the south by Labrelotte Point, this sheltered bay is also a popular spot for mooring. The Rodney Bay Marina is one of the best equipped in the eastern Caribbean with many water sports on offer. Impressive homes dot the hills surrounding the bay, and St. Lucia's biggest shopping mall is in the area.

Nearby Reduit Beach is one of the best St. Lucia beaches.

Enbas Saut Waterfall Trail

Accessed at Edmund, above Soufriere, the Enbas Saut waterfall trail lies on the lush slopes of Mount Gimie, St. Lucia's highest mountain. The well-maintained trail circles through dense rainforest to a waterfall, which has eroded its way into volcanic rock.

The trail takes about two hours 30 minutes and requires suitable hiking shoes. Be prepared to work your calves by walking up and down many steep steps.

Birders with sharp eyes are in for a treat. Keep an eye out for the St. Lucia parrot, St. Lucia oriole, Semper's warbler, and St. Lucia wren. The park also harbors exotic plants, such as the blue mahoe and Honduras mahogany.

Most visitors access the trail in 4WD safari vehicles along a rough and rocky road that also affords one of the best vistas of the Pitons.

Government House, Morne Fortune

From 1803 to 1844, the British made St. Lucia's capital, Castries, a major naval port and built fortifications on Morne Fortuné, the mountain overlooking the harbor. It was here that some of the most brutal battles between the French and English took place.

Today, Morne Fortuné, meaning "Hill of Good Luck" still offers stunning views of Castries and the harbor from its scenic overlook. Walking up here to snap some photos is one of the most popular free things to do on St. Lucia. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Martinique. The original fortifications still stand, and you can visit a monument, as well as old military buildings and cannons.

The northern side of Morne Fortuné is home to Government House , the official residence of St. Lucia's Governor General, set amid beautifully landscaped private gardens.

Shopping at Castries Market

The colorful Castries market, at the easternmost point of Castries harbor, is a great place to visit to experience a slice of local life on St. Lucia. Merchandise ranges from handicrafts to locally grown fruits and vegetables. Shoppers can buy batiks, woodcarvings, gift baskets of spices, banana ketchups and oils, hand-made brooms, hot-pepper sauces, and the usual souvenirs.

While the market is open every day, the most active day is Saturday.

Mamiku Gardens

Located on the island's east coast between the towns of Mon Repos and Praslin, this lovely garden features five separate tropical garden areas, each with its own theme. Among these is the medicinal herbal garden, where you can learn about how African slaves discovered them on the island and shared their knowledge about the uses of native plants.

Bird-watchers will be particularly happy here, where the huge variety of flowers lure endangered and rare birds. Among birds commonly spotted are the golden oriole, the black finch, white breasted thatcher, and several varieties of hummingbirds.

You can explore the property on your own, or take one of the guided tours with options to focus on bird-watching , the gardens, or the old plantation's history. The plantation tour includes a hike to the coast, while the garden lover's tour provides more information on the plants and their habitat. Among the gardens' most popular flowers are its many orchids.

The property was once a plantation in the early 18 th century, and today you can see not only the gardens but the archaeological digs and the treasures uncovered. If you make the hike to the archaeological dig site, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the coast and Praslin Bay.

Parts of the garden and facilities are wheelchair accessible, including a balcony that overlooks most of the gardens.

Derek Walcott Square

Named after St. Lucia's Nobel Laureate, Derek Walcott Square is a great starting point for a walking tour of the capital, Castries. Its most famous landmark is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception . The cathedral exemplifies a Victorian variation on a Romanesque design and features an Italianate-style clock tower centered on the square.

Opposite the cathedral sits the restored public library and a series of brightly painted gingerbread colonial buildings with verandahs overhanging the sidewalk.

15 Best Things to Do in St. Lucia

St. Lucia is a bubbling, brooding volcanic mass of an island that rises from the middle of the Lesser Antilles in a medley of rugged coastal coves and mountainous peaks.

Dressed in jungle and rainforest from head to toe, the landscapes here are amongst some of the most celebrated in the Caribbean .

That means St. Lucia is far from just your usual rest and relaxation destination.

It’s a place of wild highland walks and adrenaline-thumping ziplines too, curious creatures and out-at-sea adventures.

History oozes from the pores of crumbling colonial castles from Pigeon Island to the historic plantation estates of the south, while luxurious all-inclusive hotels offer prime honeymoon locations between the coves and crevices of the coast.

Add to that an interesting mashup of Parisian and French cuisine, strong rums and a hearty local welcome, and it’s easy to see why this jewel of an island remains a true Carib favorite!

Lets explore the best things to do in St. Lucia :

1. Climb the Gros Piton

Gros Piton

No trip to beautiful St. Lucia could possibly be complete without at least a short journey to spy out the most recognisable and iconic Heritage Site on the island (and perhaps even in the entire Caribbean region!). The striking duo of the Pitons, UNESCO-tagged and soaring like spearheads from the rollers of the ocean, mark the coastline around sleepy Soufriere.

The largest of the two, known suitably as the Gros Piton, reaches a whopping 798 meters, making it the second-highest mountain in the country.

Scaling the great volcanic summit is one of the top activities around, with hikes taking less than a day to complete and offering some seriously unforgettable views of Soufriere Bay and the green hills of the south!

2. Wonder at the Sulphur Springs

Sulphur Springs, St Lucia

Billed as the world’s only drive-in volcano, the bubbling, steaming Sulphur Springs that emit plumes of smoke and ash betwixt the hills above Soufriere are certainly not to be missed.

They can be easily accessed on the winding roadways that weave into the panoramic tropical ridges from the south-western coast of St.

Lucia, offering up breathtaking views of the inland jungles and the coast as they go.

Too hot to bathe in, the Sulphur Springs hit whopping temperatures of nearly 200 degrees Celsius.

Visitors can park up, wander close by (but not too close!) and peer down into the collapsed crater where the heat and the magma meet.

3. Bathe in the nearby mud pools

Sulphur Springs - Mud Bath, St Lucia

A perfect addition to any trip into the Soufriere hills to see the Sulphur Springs, the mud pools that lurk downstream from the volcanic opening in the mountains here offer a fine session of relaxation and healing.

Set over a series of separate baths and complete with dedicated changing rooms and showers, the site has been famed since the French colonial age for its ability to de-stress, cure tension and relieve skin disease.

It’s also just darn good fun, with the bubbling mud reaching temperatures of 38 degrees and add-on pools offering steamy waters to sit in and watch the jungle swaying in the highland breezes all around.

4. Stroll along Vigie Beach

Vigie Beach, St Lucia

Void of all the gaudy souvenir shops and pushy touts, and without any rows of plastic deck chairs or sun umbrellas, Vigie Beach has an indelible charm of its own.

Wide and powdery, the sands slope down into the Caribbean as they fringe the northern reaches of Castries City.

They are largely secluded for most of the day and glow yellow and pink when the sun sets.

That makes them a perfect spot for strolling and beachcombing, with the occasional banyan tree and palm moving in the trade winds and the odd smiling local passing by.

5. Feel the romance on Anse Chastanet

Anse Chastanet Resort

Just around the rocky coastal bends from Soufriere, nestled in its own little fold of high coastal mountains and deep green rainforest, the Anse Chastanet resort occupies perhaps the most romantic spot of any hotel in the Caribbean.

Designed by acclaimed architect Nick Troubetzkoy, the 600-acre spot boasts sweeping views of the south-eastern Caribbean Sea, dramatic broadsides of the UNESCO-attested Pitons and seemingly endless gardens of blooming orchids and bougainvillea, coconut palms and lansan groves.

At night, diners can settle on the sands for candlelit meals set to the sounds of the lapping waves.

During the day, they kick-back on loungers and cool off under the vine-dressed cliffs.

It’s all very refined.

6. Feel the haunting history at Morne Fortune

View from Morne Fortune

Set high above the city streets of Castries, the hill known as Morne Fortune is a fine spot to get a fascinating glimpse of the long and bloody colonial histories that have coalesced on this rugged isle of the Lesser Antilles.

Once a stronghold for the British settlers, the fortification later switched to French control, and the hillsides around its garrison were the site of some seriously bloody fighting between the two colonial invaders.

Today, Fortune is home to a series of ruined gun houses and batteries, along with one haunting memorial to the 27th Inniskilling Regiment, many of whom perished in the plight to capture nearby Guadalupe.

7. Take in the energy of Marigot Bay

Marigot Bay, St Lucia

As one of the bona fide tourist meccas of St. Lucia as a whole, the little inlet that forms Marigot Bay midway between Castries City and Canaries on the island’s western edge comes loaded with everything from enticing Caribbean restaurants to luxurious accommodation options.

Sat just a little way down the coast from the runways of the George F.L. Charles Airport, it’s the perfect place to begin a holiday here.

Check out the lively Marina Village, with its wealth of craft shops and clothes boutiques; enjoy the abundance of tour operators offering the likes of SCUBA excursions out beyond Roseau Bay, and don’t forget to join in with the local barbeque evenings – the best are at JJ’s Paradise, just meters back from the harbor!

8. Tour the Botanical Gardens of the Soufriere Estate

Morne Coubaril Estate & Gardens, Soufriere, St. Lucia

A onetime royal grant to the Devaux clan from Louis XIV of France himself, the Soufriere Estate encompassed as many as 2,000 acres of lush tropical rainforest on the south-western end of the island when it was first established in the early 1700s.

The modern site is much smaller, but the draws are the same: waxy orchids the size of pancakes; magenta-red hibiscus blooms; explosions of grass-green ferns and winding pathways that go deep into groves of bamboo, jasmine and creeping figs.

Other draws include the roaring Diamond Falls, which cascade over moss-dressed rocks in the middle of the gardens, and a series of bubbling hot pools at the adjoining spa.

9. Keep company with cannons on Pigeon Island

Pigeon Island

Don’t be confused by the name: Pigeon Island was once an island.

It languished out in the swells of the Caribbean until as late as 1972, in fact, when it was connected with a concrete causeway to the roads around Gros Islet in the north.

But that’s only the latest episode in the spot’s long, long history; a history that goes all the way back to pre-historic times, when the native Arawak people of the region resided in the deep coastal caves and crevices that line the coast.

More recently (and the reason so many modern visitors opt to alight on Pigeon Island), one Admiral Rodney of the English fleet commandeered the rocks and constructed a formidable fortress on its top.

The battlements and canons, the mess halls and the docks can all still be seen today!

10. Get the heart thumping at the Treetop Adventure Park

Treetop Adventure Park

When you’ve had enough of kicking-back on the sunny sands of Soufriere and Gros Islet, be sure to make a beeline for this adrenaline-thumping attraction close to the historic town of Dennery Quarter on the east coast.

The self-proclaimed Treetop Adventure involves a series of speedy ziplines that crisscross through the forest canopy.

If you’re brave enough to look down, you’ll be able to spot the wild undergrowth below, along with colourful tropical birds flitting through the boughs close-by.

Additional tours from the site include safaris along the less-trodden eastern coast and cycling excursions through the rainforest!

11. Splash around the Splash Island Water Park

Splash Island Water Park

The perfect choice for travelers with kids in tow eager to hit the beaches and the Caribbean Sea, the Splash Island Water Park can be found bobbing out along the shoreline of southern Gros Islet, where the yellow sands of Reduit Beach give way to the green dunes of the north.

Made up of a series of inflatable rafts and walkways, bouncy castles and obstacles, the attraction adds a dash of energy and fun to a day at the seaside – making it great if you’re sick of lazy days of sunbathing and wallowing in the tropical heat! Kids especially will enjoy the climbing wall, the monkey bars, the rope bridges and the trampolines, while that out-at-sea volleyball court is always a real hit!

12. Shop your way through Castries Market

Castries Market

Located smack bang in the heart of the island’s bustling capital at Castries City, this sprawling market erupts from Monday to Saturday behind the charming façade of the 19th-century market building on Jeremie Street.

An earthy, local affair, visitors who come here can expect oodles of chatter and smiling Saint Lucians, not mention stall after stall selling regional produce that’s been plucked straight from the fields and trees of the island.

Expect stacks of jungle-green cucumbers, sun-orange papayas by the bucket load, fragrant spices like cinnamon and vanilla, aubergines and shiny yellow plantains, not to mention countless emporiums touting handmade crafts, trinkets and souvenirs.

13. Explore the rainforest hiking trails

Roseau Dam Trail, St Lucia

With its verdant interior of virgin rainforest and mist-topped mountains that bubble and steam with plumes of sulphur and smoke, it’s hardly surprising that St. Lucia is one of the top destinations in the Caribbean for donning the walking boots and hitting the trails.

There are oodles to choose from too, setting aside the aforementioned Gros Piton Trail to the top of the rugged mountain near Soufriere.

Check out the paths that criss-cross Frigate Island for starters, where the mind-boggling zandoli te lizard flits through the grasses, or the winding Barre de L’isle Rain Forest Trail that fringes the edge of the island’s densest woods, peaking at 1,400 meters up with the tip of Morne la Combe.

Then there’s the Des Cartiers Trail, where hikers keep company with colourful parrots and slinky snakes.

14. Attend the weekly food festivals

Anse La Raye, Fish Fry

Attention all foodies: St. Lucia’s weekend rigmarole of culinary fests is simply not to be missed.

Friday night starts things rolling with a huge blowout of lobster and sizzling shrimp between the streets of Anse La Raye on the west coast.

Locals come by their droves to join in the fiesta, which is fuelled by oodles of super-fresh Caribbean fish cuts, samba dancing and chilled beers to boot.

Next up is the Canaries Creole Pot that takes place on the last Saturday of each month, where bubbling bowls of stock meet the salty seafood of the region.

Alternatively, hungry travelers can make a beeline for the charming seaside town of Dennery Quarter on the east coast, where BBQ fish joins reggae until the early hours.

15. Have a homebrew at the Antillia Brewing Company

Antillia Brewing Company

The first (and probably the only) microbrewery to grace the streets of St. Lucia as a whole, the Antillia Brewing Company was started in 2015 by a team of Canadian expats.

Passionate about creating fresh and artisanal ales with a difference and spurred on by the successes of the brewing industry in their home country, the owners now serve up pint upon pint of their much-loved Golden Wheat and Stout at their large drinking hall in Rodney Bay.

There’s food on offer too, like spicy jerk wings, American-style hotdogs and burgers, wedges and more – all perfect company for a couple of homebrews in the Caribbean sun!

Experience the best of St Lucia with this guide to things to do © BlueOrange Studio / Shutterstock

It takes about an hour and a half to travel from one end of tropical St Lucia to the other – maybe one hour with light traffic.

But don’t be fooled by the limited real estate. A trip to this idyllic Caribbean island will keep you busy with activities from dawn till dusk, whether your taste runs to cacao estate tours or jungle hikes.

Beyond the bone-white sands and turquoise waters, St Lucia offers an abundance of nature trails, family-friendly experiences and mouthwatering cuisine, plus overall good vibes. To help you plan your itinerary, here's our guide to the best things to do in St Lucia.

Go hiking on St Lucia's pitons

As you might expect from an island with such mountainous terrain, St Lucia is a hikers’ paradise . Most walkers start the adventure on the twin volcanic plugs known as the Pitons. Gros Piton is the larger of the two, and the ascent gets progressively more taxing as you get closer to the summit. Though the climb is shorter, the trek up Petit Piton is unforgiving from the get-go.

The payoff is a panoramic, unobstructed view of the island that will leave you breathless. Wildlife enthusiasts should tackle the Piton Flore Trail that loops through lush rainforest to the top of Piton Flore near Castries; endemic St Lucia parrots are often spotted along the trail.

Planning tip: If you’re just after a leisurely stroll against a brilliant backdrop, the Tet Paul Nature Trail climbs through an organic farm to a lofty lookout near Soufrière. The route is achievable for hikers of all ages and fitness levels, but an early morning start is best for keeping cool and avoiding the midday sun.

Take a cruise to admire the St Lucia sunset

There are few more romantic experiences than watching the Caribbean sun dip below the horizon and feeling its orange glow kiss your skin while you sip on a cold drink and nibble on hors d’oeuvres. A sunset cruise will be a highlight of any trip to the island described as the "Helen of the West Indies." Most cruises offer two relaxed hours at sea, with the perfect trifecta of good drinks, good food and Caribbean music.

Planning tip: For a novel twist on the typical St Lucia sunset cruise, Mystic Man offers a sunset cruise that sails along the inner bay of the Pitons, serving up dramatic coastal views. Increase the intimacy factor with a private cruise or rent a catamaran for an evening sail with just your nearest and dearest. You might even catch that elusive phenomenon known as the green flash, an optical illusion caused by the refraction of the sun's light.

Indulge in St Lucia chocolate

St Lucia’s long history of cacao production can be traced back to the 1700s when plantations were established to supply beans to Europe to be transformed into premium chocolate. Today, the industry is thriving once again with the growth of premium chocolate brands, and the entire month of August is dedicated to events celebrating the confection.

The Rabot Hotel is the centerpiece of a 250-year-old cocoa farm, the oldest on the island, and it supplies beans to the Hotel Chocolat brand. Beyond the cocoa-inspired decor, the property’s meals are also chocolate-infused. Standouts at lunchtime include cacao nib-marinated chicken rotis and watermelon salad; for dinner, the beef tenderloin is paired with seasonal vegetables, cacao nibs and garden mint.

For a sweet addition to an intimate getaway, try a revitalizing "Chocolate Delight" spa treatment at the innovative Jade Mountain resort, or a sensuous "Sweet Surrender Chocolate Wrap" at Kai Koko Spa inside the tranquil Ti Kaye Resort .

For a more immersive experience, take a heritage tour with Fond Doux Eco Resort for a deep dive into all things cacao, including the cocoa-rina dance traditionally used to polish the beans. Cacao Sainte Lucie , in the village of Belvedere near Canaries, takes visitors through the slow roasting and stone grinding process that forms the foundation of its handcrafted small-batch chocolate. You can even try your hand at making a bar.

Enjoy natural spa treatments at St Lucia's Sulphur Springs

One oft-quoted piece of St Lucian trivia is the fact that the island boasts the world’s only drive-in volcano. It's not quite a Bond villain's lair, but arriving at this steaming natural volcanic spa is certainly an experience, with four pools fed by volcano-heated water where you can soak.

The dormant volcano that produces all this geothermal heat last erupted in the 1700s, but its mud baths, hot springs and waterfalls continue to draw a global crowd. The mud baths are believed to contain detoxifying properties that soothe sunburn, joint soreness, arthritis and skin conditions like eczema.

Planning tip: Try to nab a spot in the first mud bath – the water flows from one to the next and gets a bit mucky by the fourth bath.

Get wet at Splash Island Water Park

Splash Island is the Caribbean's first floating water park, and it's a firm favorite with families in St Lucia. The inflatable water park sits just off of Reduit Beach on the island's northwest coast, and it features a kid- and adult-friendly obstacle course with hurdles, monkey bars, a slide, swing and climbing wall, a trampoline, water volleyball and more. Lifeguards are stationed close by to ensure a safe aquatic adventure.

Planning tip: After working up an appetite, visitors can tuck into a meal from one of the small, cozy restaurants lining the nearby Rodney Bay strip.

Get above the rainforest on the aerial tram

A dense stretch of emerald rainforest covers the interior of the island, providing shelter for the national bird, the St Lucia parrot (Amazona versicolor) , found only on this tiny Caribbean island. In local parlance, it’s called the Jacquot, and you may be lucky enough to spot one from the aerial tram that crosses the jungle at Rainforest Adventures , inland from Castries.

The open, cage-like gondolas soar 37m (120ft) above the rainforest canopy, providing an incomparable overhead view of the lush flora and fauna. Each gondola holds eight people, and a nature interpreter accompanies each group to point out noteworthy plants and wildlife along the way. At ground level, you can search for flourishing animal life, waterfalls and tree orchids on the fern nature trail.

Join the fun at the Gros Islet Friday Night Street Party

St Lucia's most famous party is not its annual carnival but the Gros Islet Friday Night Street Party, which has been a staple on the island's nightlife scene for more than 50 years.

Held in St Lucia's northernmost town, the weekly jump-up and jam session starts as soon as the sun sets. Residents pile up their coolers with ice, local fruit juice and Piton beers, and it’s not long before the telltale scent of barbecues and garlicky fish and chicken starts wafting through the air.

Add in a few hundred revelers and DJs spinning records ranging from groovy soca to the “riddim-driven” sounds of Caribbean dancehall, and you have a shindig lasting well into the wee hours on Saturday morning. If you want to party like a true Lucian, there’s no better place to strut your stuff.

Shop for crafts and tropical fruit at the Castries Market

Since 1894, the Castries Market on Jeremie Street in Castries has been the island's main hub for the sale of fresh fish and meat, produce, herbs and spices. It's a great place to browse for fresh, sun-sweetened fruit and vegetables, displayed in neat piles.

Nearby, the covered section of the market features rows of colorful stalls selling handcrafted trinkets, decorated calabashes, woven baskets, straw hats, art, spicy island condiments and locally produced beachwear. It's also a fine spot to sample authentic St Lucian treats such as bakes (fried dough), cocoa tea and cow heel soup.

Planning tip: The market operates daily, but Saturday is the busiest day of the week – locals gather before 7am to have the pick of the fresh produce.

Watch a cricket match at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground

One of the holdovers from St Lucia’s time under British colonial rule is the national obsession with cricket. This British pastime is tied with football (soccer for you Americans) as the most popular sport on the island. If you're unfamiliar with the game, ask a local to talk you through the rules.

St Lucians, like most West Indians, are passionate about cricket, so don’t be surprised if you see locals walking along holding small transistor radios to their ears to follow matches. The best place to see a match is the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground at Gros Islet, named after the first St Lucian to be called up to the West Indies Cricket Team.

Planning tip: For the ultimate Caribbean cricket-watching experience, grab a seat in the party stands, where the drinks are always free-flowing and the celebrations spirited and uninhibited.

Take a rum tour to sample St Lucia's spirit

Rum is the rockstar ingredient in some of St Lucia’s best-loved culinary traditions, from the island's famous rum punch to the local fruitcake. Locally produced Bounty Rum has even been described as the spirit of St Lucia in every way!

Planning tip: Bounty Rum is manufactured and bottled by St Lucia Distillers , which also produces the award-winning premium rum, Chairman’s Reserve. You can follow its production process on a Rhythm of Rum tour, which also includes tastings of its extensive collection of rums and rum-based liqueurs.

Eat like a local in St Lucia

St Lucia’s cuisine is a mélange of Amerindian, British, French, African and Creole influences, boiling down to a dizzying array of flavorful local fare. Starchy sides such as yam, sweet potato and dasheen (a kind of taro) are typically accompanied by stewed meats or fish broth and vegetables. Legumes are a popular accompaniment, particularly lentils or red (kidney) beans.

A traditional breakfast starts with cocoa tea made from cacao sticks and aromatic spices, with fried dough "bakes," stewed saltfish and cucumber salad.

Planning tip: You can sample any of these dishes and many more at local restaurants around the island. During Jounen Kwéyòl – a festival dedicated to Creole culture held annually in October – you can find many authentic local meals served in towns and villages, including the national dish: saltfish and green fig (unripened banana). Also, look out for bouyon (meat stew) and breadfruit with smoked herring.

20 Best Things To Do In St. Lucia

There are many activities you can do on a fun vacation in St. Lucia. Whether you’re staying here for a couple of days, a week, or even months, the beautiful island always has places to explore and adventures to go on.

St. Lucia is purported to be one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands. I can honestly say that the hype is all true, and it’s one of the best places for an unforgettable Caribbean holiday!

Here is a complete guide on the best things to do in St. Lucia, covering everything from the best hikes, beaches, waterfalls, places to eat, and other unique attractions the island is known for.

Soufriere Sunset Cruise

Things To Do In St. Lucia

Diamond falls botanical gardens.

You can find the Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens towards the west end of St. Lucia. It’s within walking distance of many all-inclusive resorts in this part of St. Lucia. It’s a working port town, and many of the residents are part of the tourism industry, which fuels the island’s economy.

Diamond Falls

This is not an affluent town with designer boutiques or glittering gift shops, but you will find a Massy grocery store and some other shops with useful items. You can enjoy the beautiful flowers and waterfall at the popular Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths.

The botanical gardens present a variety of plants that are lush and well-labeled. We visited in the morning, and it was not busy, although more people arrived as we left. I suggest going in the morning before it gets crowded.

Diamond Falls Botanical Garden

Soufriere Drive-In Volcano

The Soufriere Drive-In Volcano is an interesting and unusual attraction in the town. Many tours can bring you here but visitors are able to easily come on their own. When you buy a ticket, a guide joins you in the car. They lead you to the parking spot and explain everything along the way.

Drive in Volcanoe

The booth to buy the tickets and the parking are all inside the collapsed volcano, so the feeling is quite otherworldly. It was hard to believe we were still in lush St. Lucia while standing in this barren moonscape.

You can see boiling mud pools and notice a very strong sulfur odor. The guides know everything about the geological history of the site and can answer all of the questions anyone might have.

Kayaking Tour

One of the best experiences we can recommend is kayaking in clear bottom boats with Tropical Kayak Adventures. We booked the tour directly on their website before we came to the island. The package includes lunch at the Beacon Restaurant although you can opt out of it.

Kayaking Tour St Lucia

We met our guide Yohance at Soufriere Beach Park. He was really sweet, and along with his young assistant, stays with you every step of the way. When you set out in the clear bottom kayak, you can see fish swimming right beneath which is a new way to experience observing sea life.

Kayaking on the Caribbean Ocean can be pretty tiring since the water is so active, but it’s a lot of fun. The kayaking tour takes you to bat cave, a narrow opening in the rock near the shore chock full of bats.

You can also snorkle around an old fishing boat. The coast from a kayak makes for a beautiful sight. There are several other places and tours for kayaking in St. Lucia you can sign up for too. The island also has scuba diving and boating tours if you’re interested.

Snorkeling at Sugar Beach

You can either book a snorkeling trip to Sugar Beach that leaves right from Soufriere Beach Park or go to it yourself. The guide meets you right there in the park and leads you to a boat that leaves from the dock.

Sugar Beach

This was our first time seeing the Pitons from the water, and it was spectacular! There are beautiful fish at Sugar Beach, including a family of squid. You can bring your own snorkeling masks and fins or ask the tour guide.

While snorkeling, there were also needlefish and many other fish of various sizes and colors. If you enjoy observing life under the sea, this is a great excursion to go on in St. Lucia.

Dinner at Seashells Restaurant

The Seashells Restaurant is just a few minutes walk from many resorts on this side of St. Lucia and offers an incredible sunset right on the beach. It’s an open-air restaurant so you’re really at one with the natural setting.

Seashells Restaurants

The food was fine, nothing really to write home about, but the view and warm breeze are so enchanting that we didn’t notice or care. Walking back to the resort is not without effort as you’re going uphill, and the incline is relentless until you reach the room.

That being said, we didn’t mind the walk and certainly taxis are available and easy to arrange transportation to and from the Seashells Restaurant.

See The Fishing Village of Laborie

Visit the picturesque fishing village of Laborie. The Bay of Laborie is beautifully situated and offers magnificent sights. It’s a simply paradisiacal place and you can even watch a fisherman preparing his catch right on the beach. Beautifully small, colorful houses and villas line the bay, bordering a very nice sandy beach, Laborie Beach, with many palm trees.

Laborie Beach

Behind Laborie, but before the village of Choiseul, is Piaye Beach. An incredibly beautiful natural and secluded beach. The Just A Chill Beach Bar and Grill is a great stop for drinks and food right on the beach. The Piaye River flows directly into the sea here. You can find horseback riding lessons and tours that involve riding in salt water and fresh water, which we highly recommend.

Piaye Beach

Tree to Bar at Hotel Chocolat

The Tree to Bar experience at Hotel Chocolat was one of the highlights of our trip. You can book online through Viator to reserve ahead of time. We decided to just wing it and drove over around lunchtime, and we were able to pay for us as a couple.

Tree to Bar

If you opt for the full experience, it includes lunch which is delicious and exceeded our expectations by quite a bit. I had grilled mahi, and my husband had chicken roti along with some incredible plantain chips. The chocolate milkshakes, which are customizable in regards to the percentage of cacao, are not part of the included lunch but are well worth it.

The tour itself is wonderful. You get to walk through the Rabot Estate, learning about how the cacao pods grow and all of the steps that are taken before they get to their final chocolate bar form. This tour experience has been well thought out and organized by Hotel Chocolat.

They have really considered everything, down to the cool washcloths infused with cacao essence to refresh you after the walk through the estate. The tour is quite participatory, with hands-on experiences every step of the way. They even let you graft (and name!) a cacao tree.

Making the chocolate was more effortful than I expected, and the guides are excellent in explaining each step clearly and encouraging everyone. There is a gift shop on site with lots of different products, including cacao-infused soaps/lotions in addition to a large selection of chocolate bars. You can opt to have lunch before or after the chocolate-making tour or book it without lunch.

Latille Waterfall

The Latille Waterfall is an absolute Caribbean gem. Not overrun by visitors and lowkey, this waterfall can be found in a somewhat hidden spot on the east coast, very close to the village of Micoud.

From the south or north, drive along the east coast on the Micoud Highway. At the end of the village of Micoud, turn onto Mahaud Road. A sign of Latille Waterfall will now guide you until you get there.

LaTille Waterfall

There is then a small, good 5-minute, developed descent through the rainforest until you can catch a glimpse of this wonderful waterfall. Bathing at the waterfall is also possible and is a fantastic experience.

A very friendly Rastafarian who lives here and lovingly cares for the preservation of this wonderful place receives a fee of 20 EC per person. After you have enjoyed your time at the Micoud waterfall, you can still linger in the surroundings, with a small natural spa with fish, which is available for free.

Lunch at Beacon Restaurant

The Beacon Restaurant is further up the road and at a much higher elevation from the beach which gives you a wonderful view of the whole area. We had a full run of the buffet as part of the tour package. The quality of the food is outstanding and much better than you would expect from a buffet. The breadfruit salad was a highlight for me.

Beacon Restaurant View

There are a lot of locals (as well as tourists) that eat here, and many locals come with their entire families to celebrate birthdays and big events. They have a large seating area and can accommodate a lot of people at once. It’s a good place to have lunch if you’re traveling with a big group.

Tet Paul Nature Trail

Tet Paul Nature Trail is an exciting activity for anyone who wants to experience the scenery without doing anything too strenuous. The Gros Piton Hike (which lasts four hours) is another option that’s a bit more intense and most of the people we met who did it were all much younger than us. We didn’t want to physically exhaust ourselves so we choose the Tet Paul Trail instead which is more low-key.

Tet Paul Piton View

This hiking trail comes with a guide when you buy the tickets, and the guide we got has lived in that area for her entire life and was very knowledgeable about the trees and plants on the hike.

She was five months pregnant and making her third climb of the day while wearing flip-flops, so that tells you it’s not that strenuous. The hike takes about 45 minutes to complete. Definitely bring water and be prepared to ascend a lot of stairs!

There are three different lookout points and all of them are gorgeous. This was my personal favorite activity of the entire vacation.

Tet Paul Lookout

Choiseul For Arts and Crafts

Take a trip to Choiseul. Choiseul and its surroundings are also called the “cradle of handicrafts” on the island. It’s the traditional arts and crafts area of St. Lucia where wonderful handicrafts are made. It’s a real pleasure to discover the many different pottery, basketry, and also other remarkable items.

Choiseul Arts and crafts

Of course, you can also buy them and take them back home as souvenirs. Directly in Choiseul, on the right-hand side, about 1 km after passing the oldest school on the island (built 1834) and the cute Anglican church, The Riviere Doree Grace Church, you will find Keramik Saint Lucia.

You can watch the owner make her art. In all colors and shapes, she offers her knowledge, know-how, and self-potted items and also makes very individual items according to your wishes and with a personal touch. For those who might enjoy taking pottery courses on a trip, the friendly owner offers fun courses as well as accommodation in a nice furnished apartment.

Dinner at Mango Tree Restaurant

The Mango Tree Restaurant is located inside the Stonefield Villa Resort. It’s found just on the other side of Soufriere and provides a view of Petit Piton from a different angle. Stonefield Villa Resort has a fancier feeling than the Green Fig and doesn’t overlook Soufriere itself, which makes it quieter with more of a remote feeling.

Mango Tree Restaurant

It’s a stunning setting, overlooking the water at sunset with Petit Piton looming right beside you. The Mango Tree has a more formal atmosphere than Saltfish, but I felt that the food was not at a fine dining level. The meals are good, but nothing special considering the expense.

The view alone makes it worth the trip, although once the sun sets you can’t see anything. So make sure you arrive on the early side of the evening to enjoy the view and sunset. It’s easy to get wifi almost everywhere, so calling for a taxi driver on WhatsApp is simple, or if you’re using a car rental, park it in one of the parking spots.

Visit Moule a Chique Lighthouse

The Moule a Chique, which translates as mussel is located at the southernmost point of St. Lucia and is considered one of the highest lighthouses in existence. You shouldn’t miss this breathtaking view of the whole southern part of St. Lucia up to the 2 Pitons in the northern direction.

Moule A Chique Lighthouse

if you’re staying in Vieux Town, the lighthouse is a short drive by cab or rental car. The road there is well-developed and you can stop again and again on the way to the lighthouse and enjoy the beautiful view. Of course, a hike to the lighthouse from the nearby Sandy Beach is also possible if you’re up for a challenge. Expect a good hour of running time for one direction.

You can see in the eastern direction the Maria Islands (the 2 small islands that are nature reserves) and can see with good visibility of St. Vincent, the southern neighboring island of St. Lucia.

Rodney Bay & Pigeon Island

We spent a day driving around to the northern end of St. Lucia from Soufriere up to Castries and on to Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island National Park. Then across to the opposite coast and around the bottom of the island and then back up to the resort.

Pigeon Island

We took our time and made lots of stops. The first stop was Castries, which is a busy, crowded city that wasn’t our scene but was still worth checking out. There are some tourist shops and markets catering to cruise ship passengers, but they seem to have similar items. I think that if you want to check out the city in depth, you should book a local tour guide to show you around as it’s a bit overwhelming.

Lunch at Sea Salt in Rodney Bay is delicious and it provides a nice breeze on the marina. I had a salad with grilled fish and my husband had a burger. The setting is relaxing and the service was excellent.

We passed many of the hotels that we had read about before we came to the island and were glad that we were staying in Soufriere with the Pitons. It’s a more suitable area for us but other travelers might enjoy Castries and the northern part of St. Lucia better.

The water at Pigeon Island National Park was much rougher but quite beautiful to see. The coastline is very dramatic there, and you can have a picnic and enjoy the crashing waves on one side of the park or the tranquil waters on the opposite shore. Some ruins of an old military base in the park are quite beautiful and offer great photo opportunities.

Pigeon Island

After leaving Pigeon Island, you can drive south back towards Castries before cutting over east to Dennery. This part of the drive was by far our favorite. The road is actually quite nice here since it’s wider and smooth. The ferns and other plants were enormous, and it was the lushest greenery I’ve ever seen in my life.

When we got out to the east coast, we stopped at the overlook in Dennery. It’s quite a beautiful sight and while we were stopped, the prime minister drove by! The entire drive and stops took about eight hours, so plan an entire day to check out a different side of St. Lucia. It was a full day with lots of different vistas and gives you a better sense of the island as a whole.

Dennerys Lookout

An ATV tour is the perfect way to end or start your vacation in St. Lucia. One of the recommended tours in St. Lucia is with Island ATV which is owned by Mystic Man and is based on his beautiful estate. Our guide, Courtney, was incredibly accommodating and patient with us. He ensured we were comfortable with the bikes before heading out on the trail.

Island ATV Tours

The tour takes you to places on the island that can’t be seen by car. You can see an abandoned French sugar mill from the 1700s and black sand beaches that are a result of the volcano on the island.

We drove our ATVs through water, up inclines, and on the beach, and they made sure we saw a variety of landscapes. There was no power steering on the ATVs, so it was much more physical than I expected but that was all part of the fun. This adventure was a close runner-up for the most fun thing to do in St. Lucia.

Island ATV blacksand beach

Lunch at Serenity Escape

This is a casual restaurant on the main road south of Soufriere. It’s a family-run business and the food has a home-cooked taste. The meals were quite excellent and not expensive at all. I highly recommend this if you are out exploring the area around Soufriere. We both enjoyed the homemade chicken creole.

Go Horseback Riding

Horseback Riding in St Lucia

The vast and unspoiled nature of the beautiful beaches and hilly landscape in the background of St. Lucia lend themselves to amazing horseback riding excursions.

There are several horseback riding tour providers scattered around the island. In the north of St.Lucia, “Doreś Riding Stable” offers wonderful eventful tours on horseback. You can combine horseback riding and the real reggae feeling.

The tour takes you along the northwest coast first along the very beautiful Gros Islet Beach at Rodney Bay and ends in the iconic Caribbean Irie Bar in Gros Islet with pure authentic Raggea, optional with drinks and food.

In the impressive and secluded bays of Donkey Bay and Cas en Bas, on the northeast side of the island, a combined horse and buggy tour is also offered, which certainly has its own special charm.

There is also the possibility of booking breathtaking horseback riding tours in the southwest area of St. Lucia. Tropical Experiences for Adventurous Souls near Choiseul offers simultaneous riding in fresh and salt water. A horseback riding trip that leads you to the beautiful Piaye Beach, with simultaneous swimming in the crystal clear Piaye River, which flows directly into the turquoise sea there.

With Atlantic Shores Riding Stables, all riders of any skill level can go horseback riding through the breathtaking landscape of St. Lucia and its hinterland and beaches. If you’ve never had the experience of riding on a long and pristine Caribbean beach, you can enjoy this family-friendly activity that takes you to Honeymoon Beach.

Sunset Cruise

St. Lucia has beautiful sunsets that can be seen with a sunset cruise. Sunset cruise tours depart from the popular areas on the island and ours departed from Soufriere, just beyond the beach park. You can see the Pitons from the water and we even got a rainbow after a brief shower.

Sunset Cruise Tour

We both just loved the landscape of St. Lucia and couldn’t get enough of the vistas. The catamaran was very comfortable, and they served rum or beer with some appetizers and snacks as part of the package. It was nice to meet the other guests on board as everyone was from different places and people were sharing their island experiences.

Dennery For Viewpoints/Ziplining

Dennery is a relatively large, typical Caribbean fishing village located on the east coast with a lot of flair. The drive there always goes along the beautiful, well-built road, partly very rugged Atlantic coast.

Dennery Viewpoint

Shortly before you reach Dennery, there is a beautiful viewpoint on the right side. Just make a short stop there for a wonderful view of the whole wide bay of Dennery. Two local snack bars offer you little insights into Caribbean cuisine. You can linger on comfortable seats and enjoy the fresh breeze overlooking Dennery.

If you’re in the mood for ziplining, the closest adventure park is Treetop Adventure Park just outside Dennery. There, you can expect the zipline adventure through the rainforest, which is just one of the many things for adventure seekers. Biking and hiking are also offered and you can see the Errard Falls.

Dinner at Orlando’s

Orlando’s is just across the street from Soufriere Beach Park, so it’s an easy walk from the hotel. Orlando’s is a really interesting restaurant that has incredible food and service but not much of a view. You’re dining in the chef’s home and overlooking the street if you happen to be by the window. The five-course meal was innovative and delicious and Orlando came to meet each table. He was gracious and you can tell that his restaurant is a real labor of love.

We rented a car from First Choice, and the representative met us in the arrivals hall of the airport when we landed. He had the car there for us, and we did the transaction inside the vehicle and were on our way in no time.

Personally, I didn’t find driving in St. Lucia to be that much of a challenge, but I have previous experience driving on the other side in Barbados, Ireland, and Scotland so it’s not a big deal for me. The island’s roads have some steep inclines with switchbacks and some large potholes so take it slow.

The locals will just go around you. I felt that the other drivers were patient and relaxed and never experienced road rage or aggression from local drivers when we were out and about. Tourists are welcome here!

Where To Stay in St. Lucia

We decided to stay in Soufriere, as that area of the island has all of the things that interest us the most, with nature, hiking, beautiful scenery, and outdoor activities. However, you can read this complete guide to truly learn about all the areas to stay in St. Lucia .

We chose the Green Fig Resort & Spa because it looked so enchanting, nestled up in the hills overlooking the town.

Green Fig View

We had read that the hotel had more of a bohemian feel, which appealed to us, and the Green Fig lived up to that description. I can’t begin to describe how much we loved this hotel. The staff is warm and welcoming, the grounds are so beautiful without a sterile cookie-cutter look, and the view is unbelievable.

I never got tired of gazing at the Pitons! We had a private balcony off our room where we could sit and relax with a direct view of Petit Piton. The restaurant at the hotel, Saltfish, is very good. My favorite meal was the catch of the day, and my husband really enjoyed the green curry with fish.

The included breakfast was a bit light – fruit and toast – so we added something more substantial to it each morning. You can dine here if you’re not a hotel guest, and there is free parking on site. Just make reservations a day or two ahead and enjoy the view!

13 Best Things to Do in St. Lucia

Unique St. Lucia attractions and shore excursions start with the imposing Piton peaks, a beautiful coastline and plenty of shopping and dining in the capital city of Castries.

They also include Pigeon Island National Landmark with a history of Amerindians, piracy and battles between the English and French. Fond d’Or Nature Historic Park has more island history, nature and culture. Fond Doux Estate is an authentic working plantation.

Noteworthy standard attractions include an emphasis on touring the backcountry by hiking, biking, horseback and ATV mentioned above. We especially enjoyed our ATV ride through the countryside.

1) The Pitons

Gros Piton and Petit Piton are two giant volcanic plugs located south of Soufrière that top 2,000 feet. They are the most prominent natural attractions on St. Lucia and are popular with photographers.

The Pitons are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Highly fit visitors take a five- to six-hour hike up Gros Piton for the views. Less energetic visitors like my wife and daughter take a dip in warm mud baths at the base of the mountains and wash off in a nearby waterfall. That shore excursion may cost about $160 per person.

Casual island tours that include a visit to the Pitons usually cost between $65 and $95 per person depending on the length of time. Most tours last about four to five hours.

2) Soufrière

The tiny town of Soufrière at the base of the mountains is the gateway for hikers and mud bath enthusiasts. It is the location of resorts, stores and nearby waterfalls.

“Soufrière is also home to many unique cultural and historical tour destinations, including working cocoa plantations, former sugar estates and lush botanical gardens,” the St. Lucia Tourist Board says.

Island tours that visit the Pitons usually stop at Soufrière as well.

3) Tet Paul Nature Trail

Families or people with less time or energy can take advantage of St. Lucia’s beauty on the Tet Paul Nature Trail, a 45-minute hike near Soufrière.

The hike has views of Jalousie Bay and Gros Piton as well as the islands of Martinique and St. Vincent. It also has an organic farm, traditional house and exotic horticulture.

St. Lucia biking

4) Rain Forest Hikes

Rain forest hikes include Barre De L’isle Trail, a non-strenuous one-mile trail filed by an hour to climb Mr. La Combe ride, and Des Cartiers Rainforest, a strenuous two-kilometer trail.

Edmund Forest Reserve is a strenuous 3.5-hour hike into Edmund Forest Reserve. Enbas Saut is a moderate to strenuous, four-kilometer trail within the 19,000 acres of Central Rainforest Reserve at the foot of the highest mountain peak in St Lucia.

Mountain biking is available at Anse Chastanet Resort.

5) ATV / St. Lucia Coastline

The island has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the Caribbean. Tour operators offer numerous ways of viewing the coastline including sailboats, ATV, jeep and horseback.

My son and I did an ATV excursion along the the coast and loved the beauty and adventure of it all. Expect to pay about $105 per person.

6) Ziplining Like many Caribbean destinations, St. Lucia has a ziplining facility. The Treetop Adventure Park has 12 ziplines. The cost is about $100 per person. 7) Castries

Local shops are usually open weekdays 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Duty-free shopping centers are located by the cruise docks at Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenage.

Reduit is the longest and most popular beach in St. Lucia. Marigot Bay beach is known for its beautiful cove. Other beaches include Vigie, La Toc, Anse Cochon, Anse Chastanet, Anse Des Sables, Sandy Beach and Grande Anse. Grand Anse is popular for turtle watching.

The Pitons The Pitons

Rising tall from the sea and covered in emerald-colored vegetation, these volcanic plugs (or land formations made out of volcanic materials) are the most iconic sight in all of St. Lucia. Situated between the towns of Soufrière and Choiseul, Gros Piton and its smaller sibling, Petit Piton, are easy to spot from many points in the southwest.

Travelers frequently gush about just how perfect the fraternal twin peaks are to gaze at or hike through. Those who took the hike loved the beauty of the trails and said the views at the top were breathtaking, with some describing their experience as unforgettable. Despite there being two peaks available for climbing, locals caution against hiking Petit Piton unless you are a pro climber, as the trail is incredibly steep. Though it is still a strenuous venture, many visitors choose to hike Gros Piton. Travelers who considered themselves to be in good shape reported struggling thanks to the uneven rocks, but said the sense of accomplishment in completing the hike was worth the journey. Whatever time of day you venture out, remember this is the humid, hot Caribbean, so bring plenty of drinking water. For reference, guides advise carrying no less than 1.5 liters on the hike. You'll also want to set aside about four to five hours to make the trek.

Situated on the west side of the island, Morne Coubaril Historical Adventure Park is a working plantation dating back to the 18th century with an estate house, zip lining, hiking and more. Today, the plantation produces cocoa beans, coffee, copra (the dried, white flesh of coconuts) and various tropical fruits.

Pigeon Island National Landmark Pigeon Island National Landmark

Pigeon Island appeals to an eclectic mix of travelers. You could get a history lesson about the landmark's previous occupants (including a pirate with a wooden leg) or learn more about the development of the causeway that currently connects the island to the mainland. You could also attend a concert (this is the site of the annual St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival) or explore 18th-century military ruins, including Fort Rodney, which affords panoramic views of the ocean and Rodney Bay . There are two beaches and a few restaurants situated within the 44-acre national landmark, as well.

Recent travelers highly recommended a trip to Pigeon Island. Many were fascinated by the history of the area and appreciated the informational signs posted throughout. Others raved about Fort Rodney, saying the views at the end of the hike were well worth the reportedly strenuous climb. There are also some uncrowded beaches, which many visitors enjoyed. Travelers recommend going early in the morning to feel like you have the whole island to yourself.

Recent travelers had tons of praise for this hiking trail, highlighting the fantastic views of the Pitons and the friendly, knowledgeable tour guides. If you're tired of lounging on the beach but not up for a hike through The Pitons , then whiling away a few hours at Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths is sure to be a relaxing – and eye-catching – compromise. This 6-acre attraction is filled to the brim with vibrant foliage, including hibiscus, ixora and heliconia, to name a few. The Diamond Waterfall is also a feast for the eyes, changing colors throughout the year due to the mixture of rainwater and volcanic minerals that flows down the falls. You can also take a relaxing dip in the on-site mineral baths.

Recent visitors enjoyed their time at Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens, saying the flowers and plants on display were beautiful, providing a refreshing view for a walk. Toraille Waterfall Toraille Waterfall

If you're looking for an easy-to-access waterfall with photo-worthy views, head to Toraille Waterfall. One of St. Lucia's most popular falls, Toraille is located just outside of Soufriere. The waterfall stands 50 feet tall and features a swimmable watering hole at the bottom, where travelers can pose for a quick picture or video.

Past visitors said the waterfall was picturesque and appreciated the on-site bathrooms and changing rooms. However, they noted you shouldn't expect to spend much time here – it is more of a photo opportunity than a time-consuming attraction. To avoid crowds, some vacationers recommended visiting on your own versus seeing the falls as part of a tour, and others noted to opt for days when cruise ships are not in port.

Connected to Anse Chastanet by a coastal path, Anse Mamin Beach provides a more secluded, romantic atmosphere than more crowded beaches on the island – perfect for a quiet, relaxing beach excursion. Vacationers can lay out on the warm sand and wade into the calm surf, or strap on some snorkeling gear to see plenty of fish and other sea life.

Then, for some adventure, head into the dense tropical foliage directly behind the beach to explore the Anse Mamin Plantation. The Castries Market has been the capital city's local food and flea market for the last century. Open every day except for Sunday, locals gather to sell homegrown produce and spices as well as St. Lucia-stamped souvenirs for tourists.

The Castries has been a hit or miss for travelers. Some recent visitors were delighted by their experiences and enjoyed interacting with local vendors to buy unique items, such as fresh coconut and handcrafted woodworks. However, other visitors said some aggressive vendors they encountered hindered their ability to fully enjoy the market. Most travelers agreed though that there isn't a lot of diversity in the market, as many of the vendors, especially those in the craft market, sell much of the same items.

Anse Chastanet Anse Chastanet free

Arguably the best beach on St. Lucia for snorkeling and diving, picturesque Anse Chastanet is a more peaceful alternative to the sands of  Reduit Beach . If you're indecisive about lodging, you should consider the  nearby resort of the same name . Recent guests appreciated its attentive staff and unspoiled views of the water. Even if you don't stay at the nearby resort, you can still use its on-site restaurant and dive shop, or visit its on-site bar.

Visitors who ventured to Anse Chastanet for snorkeling said they were impressed by the clear water and were delighted by the abundance of sea life so close to the shore. However, some travelers were disappointed with the inflated food and drink prices and the conditions of the access road, which some described as difficult to navigate (though many arrived by boat via a snorkeling excursion).

Marigot Bay Marigot Bay free

There's a reason Hollywood comes calling to Marigot Bay (scenes from the original "Doctor Doolittle," starring Rex Harrison and "Firepower," starring Sophia Loren, were shot here). It's because this gorgeous shore, just south of Castries along the central western coast, is idyllic Caribbean: complete with swaying palm trees, anchored boats, and white sand beaches. Visitors describe Marigot as romantic and it's true that it's more blissfully quiet than jumping  Reduit  – making for a great escape.

Recent visitors' experiences varied by how close they got to the bay. Those who saw Marigot Bay from the surrounding hills were in awe of its beauty, while others on the ground had different impressions. A handful of travelers were disappointed by the lack of beach space and quickly grew bored with the few restaurants and shops in the area, saying if you don't have a boat docked or aren't staying at a nearby resort, there's not much to do.

tourist attractions near la lucia

Rodney Bay Rodney Bay free

While Rodney Bay encompasses a neighborhood in itself – it is home to attractions like Reduit Beach , Pigeon Island National Park and more – it also is a literal bay where travelers can sunbathe, swim, snorkel, kitesurf and more. Recent travelers loved the soft white sand and clear water at Rodney Beach, and those traveling by cruise ship noted it is fairly easy to get to from St. Lucia's cruise terminal. (This also means that the beach can fill up with cruisers when ships are in port, so consider visiting early or late in the day, or on non-ship days, to avoid crowds.)

The Rodney Bay area is also home to the Rodney Bay Marina, which offers plenty of restaurants and shopping venues, in addition to a full-service marina where sailors can dock their boats. Recent visitors loved seeing the variety of sailboats and yachts on the water, as well as the waterfront bars and eateries, quaint shops and open-air decks. Highlights include Buzz Seafood & Grill, which serves up fresh seafood and cocktails; Spice of India; and the gelato at Elena's Cafe.

Reduit Beach Reduit Beach free

St. Lucia beaches are a dime a dozen, but none are quite as loved (by travelers and locals alike) as Reduit. The expansive shoreline, glorious sunsets and close proximity to the bars, restaurants and shops of Rodney Bay make for an easygoing beach experience. Adjacent to the Rodney Bay Marina, Reduit is also a great place to try water sports like windsurfing and water-skiing. However, some honeymooners or other travelers looking for a romantic rendezvous may find the beach too loud and crowded for their taste.

Recent visitors loved Reduit Beach's cleanliness, white sands and clear water. The most common gripe among travelers was the daily onslaught of cruise ship crowds; visit in the morning or evening to avoid the afternoon rush. Some travelers also complained of pushy vendors that stroll the shore, adding that a respectful decline can go a long way.

Sulphur Springs Sulphur Springs

Sulphur Springs is billed as having the Caribbean's "only drive-in volcano," meaning that visitors are able to safely drive right by an active volcano. Located in the western town of Soufrière, the volcano emits sulfuric steam rather than lava, so remember to hold your nose to protect yourself from the overpowering rotten egg smell. The attraction also features warm sulfuric pools that visitors can bathe in.

Recent travelers offered mixed reviews about Sulphur Springs. Some were fascinated by the volcano and its geological history, while others were bored that it only emitted steam. The majority of visitors, however, loved the sulfuric pools, saying it left their skin feeling very smooth and that the staff and guides are excellent. For those interested in visiting the pools, past vacationers recommend getting to the attraction early to avoid tour groups and bringing a bathing suit you don't mind getting ruined.

Locals and tourists alike hit the streets to enjoy fresh grilled fish, pork and chicken; alcoholic drinks, including rum punch and local Piton beer; loud DJ music; local art vendors and even street performers spinning batons of fire.

Many recent vacationers had tons of fun at the Gros Islet street party, highlighting the electric energy, friendly locals, delicious food and strong drinks. St. Lucia has a rich history in chocolate dating back to the 1700s. The island offers prime conditions for cacao tree growth and has exported cacao beans to chocolate-lover destinations like Hershey, Pennsylvania, and countries throughout Europe. In recent years, it has become a hot spot for "chocolate tourism," and there are a number of unique ways to celebrate (and indulge in) this sweet treat.

One of the most popular options is taking a chocolate tour. Plantations like Morne Coubaril Estate and La Dauphine Estate offer tours detailing the production of chocolate from bean to bar, while renowned Jade Mountain Resort offers its own tour through its "Chocolate Laboratory." You can also become a chocolatier yourself at Hotel Chocolat at Rabot Estate, which takes you through a hands-on chocolate-making process. 14 Best Things to do in St. Lucia

By Mike Kaplan · Last updated on May 4, 2024

Part of the Windward Islands, St. Lucia offers a great balance of luxury and adventure. The island is known for its stunning and dramatic coastal landscapes, emerald green rainforests, and pristine ocean. The island’s colonial past is still reflected in its French cuisine – be sure to try a plate of green fig and saltfish!

There are plenty of opportunities to get into nature in St. Lucia, from ziplining adventures to helicopter rides! There are also plenty of things to do in St. Lucia involving water sports, like windsurfing, kayaking, and sailing. To top it off, it boasts some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the Caribbean.

The north of St. Lucia is best for lazy beach days and luxury holidays. Head to Castries or Rodney Bay and relax all holiday. But, if it’s the outdoors that has called you to St Lucia, then Soufriere in the south is where you want to be.

14. Marigot Bay

Marigot Bay

This pretty bay on St. Lucia island is secluded and intimate. There is a narrow stretch of white sand that runs the length of the bay, twisting its way along the ocean.

Marigot Bay is surrounded by thick green vegetation and tall palm trees line the beach. The bay has made it into Hollywood films like Dr Doolittle and Firepower because it’s picturesque, surrounded by nature, and tranquil.

The town, Marigot Village, is very small and quiet – there are a few shops and restaurants but not much more. The best things to do in the Marigot Bay area are rent a kayak or climb up to the top of the hill above Marigot Village and take in the breathtaking views of the bay!

13. La Toc Beach

La Toc Beach

This quiet beach spot south of Castries on St. Lucia island is little known to most tourists. It’s a bit tricky to find – but it’s worth the extra effort.

Once you arrive you’ll be rewarded with a long stretch of white sand beach almost entirely to yourself. The place has an air of luxury, and a few fancy resorts and hotels line the shore, mostly hidden away by lush foliage.

Spend the day catching a tan, snorkeling in the pristine blue water, and reading a book. It’s the perfect place to come and relax for the day – there’s nothing you need to do but be!

12. Castries Market

Castries Market

Castries market is a hub for market vendors selling everything from fresh fish to handmade crafts. It’s a great opportunity for you to connect with Castrie’s locals and buy the most beautiful souvenirs to take home to loved ones (or keep!).

The market has been running since 1894, and it’s open every day. If you want to come on the liveliest day visit the market on a Saturday. The stalls line Jeremie Street and fill it with exotic colors and smells.

You can purchase brightly colored fresh fruits to try from the open-air section of the market and then head into the indoor area and look for the most colorful beachwear and intricately carved calabashes.

11. Go Zip Lining

Go Zip Lining

If you’re looking for something adventurous that the whole family can do, then ziplining in the rainforest might just be the answer! Hidden away in the depths of the Babonneau rainforest near Rodney Bay there is a vast network of zip lines to explore.

Swing above the forest canopy and soar through the rainforest to the sound of hummingbirds and the occasional call of a St. Lucia parrot.

Zip lining through the calabash, strangler figs, and other native flora is a great way to get the kids excited about the nature on the island! Rainforest Adventures run the ziplining tours.

10. Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens

Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens

The luscious Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens has a stunning waterfall that runs down a deep earthy-red backdrop and cascades into a shallow pool below.

The gardens are dense with bright green, jungle-like vegetation and an array of brightly colored tropical flowers.

Located in the south of St. Lucia In Soufriere, the center is also home to hot mineral baths and attracts many species of native insects and birds. It’s the perfect place to come and enjoy a serene and tranquil afternoon.

9. Helicopter Tour

Helicopter Tour

Though it’s not the cheapest holiday tour, you can’t miss the chance to soar into the air on a little helicopter and get the best views of St. Lucia’s most famous destinations.

From high above you’ll be treated to bird’s eye views of the Pitons, the island’s notorious dormant volcanoes, and other top destinations, like Castries and its major beaches, Marigot Bay, and the island’s picturesque fishing villages.

There are different tours to pick from, like the North Island and South Island helicopter tours. Your flight comes with a friendly pilot who’ll tell you all about the island’s history!

8. Anse Chastanet Beach

Anse Chastanet Beach

Anse Chastanet Beach is the island’s best diving and snorkeling destination. The breathtaking Anse Chastanet reef that starts just off-shore is considered one of the best in all of the Caribbean.

You can bring your own snorkels, go on a diving tour, or sail further out onboard a boat tour and explore the deeper areas of the reef.

Even if you don’t want to dive or snorkel, this white sand beach shaded by vibrant palm trees and surrounded by rocky cliffs and mountains decorated in colorful vegetation is a must-see.

7. Rainforest Aerial Trams

Rainforest Aerial Trams

The interior of St. Lucia island is a dense, emerald green rainforest. The jungle foliage is home to the island’s national bird, the St. Lucia parrot which is endemic to the island.

Incredibly, you can soar over the rainforest on an aerial tram. The trams start their trajectory in Castries and rise 120 feet in the air! They are open air and cage-like, giving you the best views of the fauna and flora below your feet.

You’ll be accompanied by a local nature expert on your round trip and hike through the Fern Nature Trail – where you’ll walk between giant ferns to the sound of bird calls. Check out Rainforest Adventure’s Aerial Tram Tour for more information.

6. Sulphur Springs

Sulphur Springs

St. Lucia’s natural hot springs aren’t any old hot springs – they’re heated by a volcano. There are four natural springs you can soak in, as well as mud baths and cascading waterfalls you can wonder at.

The mineral rich water and mud at the springs are believed to have detoxifying properties that help with skin problems and are thought to alleviate an array of other issues like sore joints.

The best part? The springs are inside a dormant volcano! The volcano last erupted in the 1700s so you’re pretty safe. The island boasts that it has the only drive-in volcano in the world – you can’t miss it.

5. Diving and Snorkeling

Diving and Snorkeling

St. Lucia’s diving and snorkeling hotspot is the Anse Chastanet reef. There are even occasional sightings of hawksbill turtles off the shore.

Plus, if you go just round the corner you’re at Anse Mamin, another great spot for snorkeling that is more tranquil and less busy. Another hit destination is Marigot Bay that has brightly colored corals.

But go pretty much anywhere on the island and the ocean is filled with an array of tropical fish, like trumpetfish and parrotfish. St. Lucia caters for tourists who want to get their PADI diving certificate as well as those who just want to muck about with a cheap snorkel set.

The best time for snorkeling and diving is from December to May, though the island doesn’t get much rain so the weather conditions are always pretty ideal.

4. Reduit Beach

Reduit Beach

Reduit Beach sits along the northwest coast of the island, at the front of Rodney Bay. It’s popular thanks to its golden sand, turquoise waters, and numerous cocktail bars and sun loungers.

The beach also boasts an inflatable waterpark, Splash Island, that is great for families and fun for all ages.

Come and enjoy a day relaxing on the beach in style, with views of the Pigeon Island National Park to top it off.

3. Pigeon Island National Park

Pigeon Island National Park

This island nature reserve off the northwest coast of St. Lucia was joined to the mainland in 1972 by a long, man-made causeway.

The park has a fascinating history that is intertwined with people from all walks of life, from pirates like Jambe de Bois centuries ago, to the French military, and later on famous actresses like Josset Agnes Hutchinson.

There are two restaurants and two luxurious beaches on the island, as well as the ruins of abandoned military buildings that were used when the French and British armies were fighting over St. Lucia.

2. Tet Paul Nature Trail

Tet Paul Nature Trail

This short loop is about 0.6 miles long and it’s great for all fitness levels. Weave your way along the little dirt path through the tropical vegetation, accompanied by the magnificent coastal and jungle-like vistas.

It’s not a hard hike, and it goes past a stunning lookout near Soufriere; keep a look out for wildlife along the trail.

If you want to avoid the heat, set off early to avoid the hottest hours. It’s the perfect way to spend a morning in the south of St. Lucia.

1. The Pitons

The Pitons

The Pitons are two ginormous peaks that sit side by side along the coast near Soufriere and Choiseul. They’re undoubtedly one of the most iconic natural wonders on the island. Steep and covered in vibrant vegetation, the peaks allure nature enthusiasts and hikers from all over.

If you’re up to the challenge you can hike the Gros Piton, the only climbable peak of the two. It’s not an easy climb, but the views from the top are second to none. Plus, think of how cool it’ll be to say you’ve climbed up a volcanic spire.

For visitors that aren’t up to the challenge, there’s the option of taking a sunset cruise along the shore where you can take in the dramatic views of the Pitons from afar. This way you’ll get the rewards without the strenuous hike!

We couldn’t get enough of basking in the sun of our completely private retreat as we ordered room service and champagne while enjoying the beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea and Petit Piton.

The best unique things to do in St Lucia

Saint Lucia is a perfect destination for relaxing on the beach. St Lucia beaches are gorgeous, but this mango-shaped island is also ideal for sightseeing and exploring. These are the best attractions you need to try.

1. Drive into a volcano

best things to do in St Lucia - Sulphur Springs Park

One of the first attractions most people head to in St Lucia is the Sulphur Springs Park , and there is a reason for that. The Sulphur Springs near Soufriere is the most active and hottest geothermal area in the Lesser Antilles . But don’t worry – the last recorded eruption was in the 18th century. The Soufriere Volcano collapsed more than 40,000 years ago. Now, it produces only bubbling mud and an unpleasant sulphur odour.

Sulphur Springs Park

The steaming pools and bubbling mud lie on the weak spot of the crust of the collapsed crater. The mud can reach a temperature of 170 °C (338 °F).

Visiting the Sulphur Springs is one of the best unique things to do in St Lucia because it is the only “drive-in” volcano on the island. This world-famous attraction is also the only drive-in volcano in the Caribbean and one of a few in the world.

St Lucia attractions - Sulphur Springs Park

Drive up to the edge of the springs, park up, and walk just a few steps from the crater. Until the mid-1990s, it was possible to walk over the crater. But due to an accident, now you need to stay behind the fence.

2. Take a mud bath at Sulphur Springs Park

These famous mud baths are not just for fun – they can do wonders for your skin.

After seeing the volcano, take a mud bath at Sulphur Springs Park . Just a short walk from the springs, you can dip in the mineral-rich black water pools. While their water temperature is still hot (around 45°C or 110 °F), it is cool enough to enter.

You are right to think these world-famous mud baths have healing powers . They help to heal sunburn, eczema and even sore joints. They also offer a unique experience . That is why taking a mud bath at Sulphur Springs Park is one of the best things to do in St Lucia .

GOOD TO KNOW:

As you can expect, the Soufriere Sulphur Springs Park is one of the most overcrowded St Lucia tourist attractions. Hundreds of tourists flock here to take a mud bath. It is never the intimate experience you would hope for. That is why we recommend you come here early in the morning or in the afternoon after all cruise ship passengers leave.

Many tourists flock to the Soufriere area to visit the famous attractions, but only a few stop in Soufriere . Saint Lucia’s oldest town and the former capital during the French rule stands in the shadow of the twin peaks of the Pitons. This colourful town has a laid-back atmosphere and reasonable prices because visitors usually only pass by Soufriere.

If you decide to visit it, you should know you can explore Soufriere easily on foot. The waterfront offers stunning views , the Old Courthouse adds a touch of history, and pastel-coloured modern and colonial buildings contribute to the town’s vibrant charm.

13. Cocoa Plantation tours

Did you know Saint Lucia is the perfect destination for chocolate lovers? This pretty island produces the world’s finest cacao beans , which have been cultivated in Saint Lucia since the 1700s.

things to do in St Lucia - Cocoa Plantation tours

The St Lucian rainforest is ideal for growing cocoa because it has a lot of rain. Annual rainfall in Saint Lucia is up to 150 inches (381 cm), but it can be double in the mountains.

The local farmers returned to the deep cocoa roots after the collapse of the banana industry. Today, many hotels and resorts celebrate this heritage with cocoa farm tours where you can learn more about the chocolate-making process.

Specialised cocoa tours are available at numerous locations, including the Marquis Estate, Anse Mamin Plantation, and Morne Coubaril Estate . Hotel Chocolat offers a unique tour of a working cocoa plantation . You can create your own chocolate, try a delicious chocolate-infused dinner or get a chocolate body wrap in the spa. At Fond Doux Estate, you can join a tour and see the ”cocoa-rina dance”. It is a technique which the estate workers use to polish the cocoa beans before roasting.

14. Pigeon Island National Park

A  lookout point at the top of the Rodney Fort offers a panoramic view of the Northwest coastline.

If you want to learn about Saint Lucia’s warring past, head to Pigeon Island National Park near Rodney Bay. This national park is one of St Lucia’s most historical attractions because it became a strategic lookout point for defending the island’s shores  in the 18th century. You can find here colonial ruins with old British military barracks, ruins of gun batteries and also a hilltop fort. But that is not all – Pigeon Island offers beautiful views of Signal Peak and Rodney Bay .

15. Mourne Fortune

Another place you can explore is Mourne Fortune , which means “Hill of Good Luck” in English. This hill and the residential area lie high above Castries (the island’s capital). You can find numerous fortifications , such as 18th century Fort Charlotte and the old military buildings here. The Saint Lucia National Trust looks after this area. Don’t forget that it is usually difficult to park, and it gets super busy when cruise ships are in the port.

Why you should come here? Because this quaint fishing village in the north is famous for hosting a weekly street party . This popular ‘’jump-up’’ party has live bands performing or a DJ playing everything from calypso to reggae or Soca music.

The Gros Islet Street party starts around 7 pm and continues until 2 am . But remember – the best party begins between 8 pm and 11 pm. It is open to all (the locals and tourists), and stalls sell grilled fish and BBQ street food. This famous street party has been around for more than 50 years.

Several villages on the island celebrate the weekend in a similar style. Don’t miss ‘ fish fry’ if you are on the southwest coast. It’s also every Friday in the village of Anse La Raye. You can go to Dennery Village (on the East Coast), which has  a seafood fiesta   every Saturday evening.

18. Shopping at Castries market

When you find yourself in Castries, explore the bustling Castries Market in the harbour. This colourful market is the largest open-air market on the island. tourist attractions near la lucia

The Caribbean island of Saint Lucia is home to many incredible sights and epic adventures. It’s most well known for the Pitons that shoot up nearly 2600 ft from the coastline and the beautiful emerald water that surrounds the west side of the island. There is so much to do in St. Lucia, it’s hard to fit it all into one vacation. From beautiful waterfalls, therapeutic hot springs, and world-class scuba diving and snorkeling, St. Lucia is a gem of the Caribbean islands. After Jake and I explored the island for over 2 weeks, we gathered a list of the best things to do in St. Lucia.

This post may contain affiliate links. Disclosure policy .

Pigeon Island National Park:

tourist attractions near la lucia

Pigeon Island National Park is the only National Park on the island. The daily admission fee for the park is $10USD per person. There is a short 1.5 miles with 288 ft elevation change called Fort Rodney and Signal Hill.

This hike offers a nice blend of exercise, views, and history.  The park sits on a hilly peninsula on the northwestern tip of St. Lucia.  But it wasn’t always that way.  Pigeon Island used to be an actual island until 1972 when a man-made causeway was built during dredging of Rodney Bay.

The island has artifacts from the Arawak and Carib people, ancient inhabitants of the island. Then the actual Fort Rodney was built by the British and used as a strategic defense against the French stationed in Martinique.  On most clear days you can see Martinique, St. Lucia’s neighboring island to the north. See the ruins of the old Fort Rodney, cannons, soldier barracks, and prison cells.

The hike is short but has a steep climb to the top of Signal Hill, which you could skip if you are not up for it.

Gros Islet Street Party:

If you are looking for a fun local event to attend while in St. Lucia, the Gros Islet Street Party is one of the best things to do in St. Lucia. The party is every Friday from 8pm-4am. It’s when the streets come alive with locals, loud music, street vendors, etc.

It’s suggested to head toward Duke’s to get the full experience. But there are plenty of vendors in the streets offering food and drink. If you are the partying type it can be fun to stay downtown and have your place nearby.

Friday Market in Castries:

The Friday Market in Castries is one of the best things to do in St. Lucia if you want to support the locals. The Castries market is centrally located and has been around since 1891. It is a great place to get local crafts, herbs, spices, fruit, vegetables, and dry goods.

Fresh fish and meats were once sold here, but they no longer have this option at the Castries Market. I’d suggest getting a taxi here if possible, because parking can be a bit sparse around the area.

Marigot Bay:

a view from a boat of marigot bay in St. Lucia which is one of the best things to do in St. Lucia

Marigot Bay is a picture-perfect natural inlet along St. Lucia’s west coast. It was the famous setting for the original 1967 Dr. Doolittle film. But you will also find many luxury yachts and a few nice resorts in this bay as well. It’s one of the most protected bays on the island. Therefore, if a storm is coming, many boats will harbor in this area.

You can get to Marigot by boat or by car. But if you aren’t staying in the bay, we suggest by boat if possible. That way you can cruise around and enjoy the beautiful sights. Marigot Bay can be a great area to stay and relax for a few days as while visiting St. Lucia . You can explore the bay by kayak instead or visit one of the restaurants.

Cinderella Slipper (Aka: Lover’s Rock ):

tourist attractions near la lucia

A famous arch along the coast near Ciceron you will find Cinderella’s Slipper (aka Lover’s Rock). It was actually in the scene of a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. You can get here, either by boat or by car.

Jake and I went on a 1/2 day private boat tour with Sugar Boat Charters and they brought us over to this area. Jake had the guts to jump off the arch, but me, I was better off sipping on rum punch from the boat.

If you have a rental car , or want to hire a taxi, you can get to the top of the arch and walk down a short path to find Cinderella’s slipper. But it’s definitely best viewed from the ocean. So you might want to jump in to witness the beauty. You will often find locals here that will help you find the right place to jump. But in return, they ask for a tip for the help.

Sulphur Springs Mud Baths:

tourist attractions near la lucia

One of the most unique attractions in St. Lucia is the Sulphur Springs Mud Baths. Where else can you cover yourself in volcanic mud and then get into a volcanic hot spring?

You can also “drive through” the volcano and take an informational tour with a guide. We found it very interesting to learn how the island of St. Lucia was formed. Our guide was very knowledgeable and taught us many other things not only about St. Lucia but the neighboring islands.

The cost for just the mud baths is $10US per person. Or if you just want a tour of the volcano, that cost is $9US per person. If you do the combo of both, there is a discount price of $15 per person. They do accept cash (both USD & EC) or credit card.

Toraille Falls:

Toraille Falls is one of the best things to do in St. Lucia

A very popular attraction for tourists on the island of St. Lucia is Toraille Falls. You will often find tours get dropped off here shortly after visiting the mud baths. The waterfall cascades 50 feet over a cliff edge which you can stand under for a “power shower”.

The falls are located in the Heritage Tourism Site. The cost is $6US per person. Toraille Falls is a roadside waterfall, you will find the waterfall shortly after the payment booth. No hiking is involved.

Tet Paul Nature Trail:

View from the top of Tet Paul Nature Trail which is one of the best things to do in St. Lucia

Tet Paul Nature Trail is at the top of our list for the best things to do in St. Lucia. It offers one of the most stunning views of both Petit Piton and Gros Piton. It’s a rather easy hike that climbs 134 ft in a ½ mile loop hike.

The cost is $10 US per person and you will need a guide to take you along the trail. Guides sit in a hut near the entrance, so there is no way to avoid getting a guide.

The guide will take you around the loop and teach you about the history of St. Lucia and many of the local plants.

Snorkel Tour:

Jake and Emily Snorkeling in St. Lucia which is one of the best things to do in soufriere

A must-do activity in St. Lucia is snorkeling. Just about any tour company offers some sort of snorkeling guide. And that is because the marine life here is very much alive and beautiful.

Some of the best beaches for snorkeling in St. Lucia are Sugar Beach and Anse Chastanet. You can also find great snorkeling along other beaches that line the west coast.

Scuba Dive:

If you are scuba certified, St. Lucia has some amazing scuba diving opportunities on the island. There are many tours that offer guides to bring you to some epic locations.

Scuba diving in St. Lucia offers the opportunity to see over 150 different fish species, unique reefs, and even shipwrecks.

If you love scuba diving and plan to commit your vacation to it, then consider staying at a Sandals resort . Sandals offers free scuba diving to all guests. You are allowed 2 tanks per day that can either be used simultaneously or at 2 different parts of the day.

Depending on where you are on the island, there are both tours in the North, as well as along the west coast. Many tours will also offer transportation either for free or a small fee from your accommodation.

Go On A Chocolate Tour:

One of the best things to do in Soufriere is visit the cocao grove at hotel chocolat and make your own chocolate bar

What’s better than chocolate? Nothing! Well maybe making your own chocolate bar to take home as a souvenir? St. Lucia is home to Cacao trees, used to make chocolate. Many of the tours will offer an immersive experience, walking through the rainforest where you can graft a cacao tree. Or simply turning a cacao pod into cocoa which ultimately creates delicious chocolate.

A popular tour in Soufriere is with Project Chocolat . They offer either a bean-to-bar or a tree-to-bar experience. Both teach you the history of the Cacao tree. Or a bit North of Soufriere, you will find Cacoa Sainte Lucie which also offers hands-on experiences.

Hike Petit Piton or Gros Piton:

tourist attractions near la lucia

One of the more challenging best things to do in St. Lucia is hiking the famous Piton Mountains. Gros Piton is 2,618.9 ft (798.25 m) tall and Petit Piton is 2,438 ft (743 m) tall.

The best hikes in St. Lucia are typically not free for tourists. The cost to hike either Piton Peak is $50+ per person (minimum) and you must go with a guide. We also saw prices for $85-$100+ per person. While you can hire a tour guide on the spot, it might serve you well to book a tour the day before or more in advance to ensure you have a guide. They can also help schedule transportation.

Diamond Falls & Mineral Soaking Pools:

One of the most beautiful and colorful waterfalls in St. Lucia is Diamond Falls. They are located in the botanical gardens in Soufriere.

Diamond Falls

The colors of the waterfall can change daily depending on the mineral that has the highest concentration. Diamond Falls is a result of Kaolinite and Quartz and small quantities of Gypsum, Alunite, Pyrite, and Geotite that flow over a beautiful cliff.

You can also soak in natural therapeutic mineral waters soaking pools. There are both private and public soaking tubs. People who suffer from chronic rheumatism, sore joints and muscles can benefit from soaking in the mineral pools. But do note, the baths can be around 115 Fahrenheit (46 celsius).

The cost is $7US per person for entry into the botanical gardens. Plus an additional $6US to use the mineral baths. Or instead, entry to a private bath is $7.

Sunset Cruise

What’s more romantic than a sunset cruise with a view of the Pitons? Oh, and a delicious rum punch in your hand! There are a few different tours that will take you out on a sunset cruise. Or of course, you could always book your own private tour as well.

Book a tour with Viator (a trip advisor company). Or some other popular tours are Mystic Man , Sugar Boat Charters , Island Routes & Feel Good Water Taxi & Tours .

Honorable Mention

Atv tour: .

If you wanna get deep into the rainforest and explore some of Saint Lucia’s unknown territories, then an ATV tour is the rad adventure for you. The ATV tour lasts about 2 ½ hours and starts in Saltibus (transportation is included). You also get to visit 2 secluded black sand beaches where you can swim without the extra tourists.

Splash Island Water Park:

Splash Island is an open-water sports park. It has many inflatable toys on Rodney Bay. The toys consist of a trampoline, climbing wall, monkey bars, a swing, a slide, hurdles, double rocker, flip, and water volleyball.

The price for both adults & kids is $15 USD per hour. Or you can get a half day for $40 or full day for $60.

Antillia Brewery (closed on Sundays):

tourist attractions near la lucia

If you love craft beer and love to try new brews, then Antilla Brewery can be one of the best things to do in St. Lucia. Sadly, they are closed on Sunday, which is when we tried going here. They have a couple of different IPAs and a fruity ale.

You might be able to find them at some restaurants or resorts, but they definitely are not all over St. Lucia. We were lucky enough to try one of them at Hotel Chocolat and did see them at Anse Chastanet Resort. But other than that they were found far and few between.

En Bas Saut Waterfall:

En Bas Saut is one of the more remote activities to do in St. Lucia. It doesn’t quite make the list for best things to do in St. Lucia because it’s rather hard to get to. And I personally just feel like some of the other things on this list of best things to do in St. Lucia should be higher on the list.

But if you are looking for a remote hiking adventure in St. Lucia, then En Bas Saut is your spot. Check out our post on En Bas Saut to get all the details.

Plantation (banana farm):

Many of the tours will take you through the Banana Plantation which St. Lucia is known for. Bananas are St. Lucia’s #1 export crop. In the Roseau Valley, you will roam through lush vegetation and explore the banana farms.

Island Routes will take you on a sugar to rum revelation that will walk you through the history of sugar cane to rum including a drive through the banana plantation. Cosol tours will also take you through the banana plantation and teach you the history of the farm and production. Some people claim the bananas here are some of the best they have ever tasted!

Zip Line Tour:

Ziplining through lush rainforest can add that extra thrill to your vacation in St. Lucia. There are a few different tours and locations where you can zipline this incredible scenery.

Rainforest Adventures offers a unique three-in-one package where you can ride a scenic tram, zipline amongst 16 platforms and 8 lines, and a scenic hike.

Adventure Tours is also another popular company to take you along 12 lines and 5 net bridges, including the island’s longest, highest, and fastest zip line.

Deep Sea Fishing:

If fishing is your thing, going deep sea fishing can be one of the best things in St. Lucia. Tours typically start 1 mile off-shore and can venture 6-8 miles off-shore depending on the length of the tour. The species that are typically caught in the Caribbean are; Blue Marlin, White Marlin and Sailfish, Yellow Fin/ Black Fin Tuna, Dorado, Barracuda, King Mackerel/ Spanish Mackerel, Wahoo, Rainbow Runners, Horse Eye Jacks, and Yellowtail Snapper.

Horseback Riding Along The Beach

A unique tour that is offered in St. Lucia is horseback riding along the sandy beaches on a horse. This adventure will obviously need to be done with a tour, unless you brought your own horse along! Island Routes offers a 2-hour excursion that roams the sandy beaches in the north where the horses go in and out of the water.

Dolphin & Whale Watching

Another fun thing to do in St. Lucia is go on a dolphin or whale-watching tour. For some reason, this isn’t really talked about much, but there are whales and dolphins that live in the Caribbean near Saint Lucia year-round.

Helicopter Ride:

There is also a unique option for viewing St. Lucia from above. The one catch, is the helicopter “tours/shuttles” only go one way. So it can be a great way to get from the south to the north or vice versa.

The St. Lucia Helicopter’s transfer takes you from Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in the south to George F.L. Charles Airport (SLU/HGR) in the north. It is not exactly cheap, but can offer a very unique and beautiful experience on the island.

The cost for adults starts at $190 per person to fly from Hewanorra to George F.L. Charles. During the flight, the helicopter takes you over Mt. Gimie (the highest peak in St. Lucia), Roseau Dam, the Atlantic Coast and Marigot Bay.

They also offer returning helicopter transfers for $205 per person. The flight is 5 minutes longer and experiences a few other unique sights on the island. Such as views of Marigot Bay, West Coast Shoreline (reefs), the Pitons, the rainforest, and the Soufriere Volcano.

You might also check out Island Route’s , but it does seem a bit more expensive.

Takeaway | Best Things To Do In Saint Lucia

St. Lucia no doubt, has some epic adventures to choose from. It’s amazing to hear about their history and talk with the locals to get their perspective on the island. We loved learning new things, seeing new sights, and of course, staring at the Pitons any chance we got. While there aren’t many free things to do in St. Lucia, there are quite a few that are very affordable. Plus there is a tour for just about anything on the island.

If you’re visiting Soufriere, be sure to check out our guide for Best Things To Do In Soufriere . Jake and I got to spend 10 days exploring this beautiful city. We had a rental car that helped get us around, and we felt like we got to see some unique attractions that not all tourists typically get to see. And of course there are also some fun off-the-beaten-path attractions that really provide the cherry on top! Plus, we found some epic r estaurants in Soufriere to try, that offered some of the most unique cuisines we’ve ever had!

23 Best Things to Do in St Lucia You’ll Love

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 16/02/2024

Welcome to Saint Lucia, a Caribbean paradise with an array of activities and attractions to suit every traveler’s taste. From its lush rainforests and stunning beaches to its fascinating cultural heritage, you will find endless opportunities to explore and indulge in unique experiences.

I visited the island in September, outside of the peak season, so was able to fully explore much of what St Lucia has on offer. From how to experience the pitons to where to get the best roti to air and water experiences and much more, here are the 23 best things to do in St Lucia in my opinion.

23 Best Things to do in St Lucia

1. hike the pitons.

The Pitons are two volcanic plugs that rise up from the sea and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are St Lucia’s most famous landmark and offer a stunning backdrop to much of the coastline on the south west of the island.

Tet Paul Trail

It is possible to hike to the top of both the Pitons but they are both challenging climbs. It is estimated that hiking to the top of Gros Piton, over 2,600 feet tall, takes 2 hours each way (and remember it can be very humid in St Lucia).

Ironically, the Petit Piton is a more challenging climb than the larger Gros Piton. The reason for this is there are several sections that can only be climbed using ropes. It is estimated that climbing Petit Piton (over 2,400 feet) will take seven hours in total.

➡️ Book your Pitons Hike

2. Walk the Tet Paul Nature Trail

A much better option is to walk the Tet Paul Nature Trail instead where there are fantastic views of both pitons. Two companies run two different nature Tet Paul Nature Paths. Both companies charge for entrance to the trail but that fee also provides a guide which for me added a lot to the experience.

Tet Paul Trail

On arrival, I was mostly interested in getting the best photos of the Pitons. So I was surprised to become so interested in what the guide had to say about the herbs and flowers that grow along the Tet Paul Nature Trail.

Tet Paul Trail

Many of the herbs and flowers along the trail have medicinal benefits. The guide took us through the different properties of the various plants and pulled out the ones with distinctive smells like the well-named vomit fruit which smells like blue cheese.

Tet Paul Trail Highest mountains

But of course we were there mostly for the views, which included being able to see the four peaks of St Lucia’s highest mountain, Mount Gimie. The highlight of the trail is the 360 degree viewing area at the top of the path. This is the perfect place to grab selfies including the “holding the top of the piton” pose.

Tet Paul Trail fruit

There is a small store selling souvenirs and drinks at the last viewing deck before the 360 degree view area. At the end of the trail, there is a small bar area where I enjoyed the most amazing mango juice of my life as well as some outstanding fruit.

The total walk takes about 45 minutes.

3. Take a Rum Tour

The Carribean is quite synonymous with rum. However, there is only one rum distillery remaining on St Lucia, Saint Lucia Distillers and they run a popular rum tour. The tour runs through the rum making process and there is a brief chance to see a part of the distillery followed by an exhibit on the festivals on St Lucia.

rum tour

Next up is what everyone comes for – the rum tasting. This was perhaps one of the most relaxed tastings I have experienced. A large number of rums were lined up along a lengthy table (brands include Chairman Reserve and Marigot Bay). St Lucia Distillers is quite trusting and allows visitors to pour their own samples into very small paper cups.

rum tour

The distillery also has a store where their range can be purchased at a discount.

They are located on the west side of the island south of Marigot Bay. The Rhythm of Rum Tour runs Monday to Friday for individuals and on the weekend for groups. The total tour takes about one hour.

4. Fly Down a Zipline

There are several places to fly down a zipline in Saint Lucia . I visited Rainforest Adventures (also home to the Aerial Tour below) and saw their ziplining in action. Their Adrena-line (get it?) Canopy Tour operates around 2000 feet above sea level through the beautiful forest in this eco-park. The zipline covers 16 platforms and 8 lines so it is quite full on.

It is possible to combine the zipline with the aerial tram and a hike in the Ultimate Three Package.

➡️ Book Your St Lucia Zipline

5. Take the Aerial Tram

The Aerial Tram is also at Rainforest Adventures in the north of the island. The tram operates at 2000 feet above sea level and offers a lovely break from the island’s humidity. The tram is quite low key so its perfect for older and younger visitors. On the way up your guide will fill you in on the local plants and wildlife.

aerial tram

For me, the highlight was the tram ride back down the forest. The views of the north of the island were fantastic and it was possible to get more of a birds eye view of the beautiful forest.

6. Take to the waters at Sulphur Springs

Sulphur Springs is the world’s only drive-in volcano – who knew such a thing existed! This geothermal field is in the southwest of St Lucia and last erupted over 200 years ago. It is considered to be a dormant volcano and is now better known for its mud baths rather than explosions.

sulphur springs

And those baths are hot!!! The coolest of the hot springs baths is the lowest eg the bath closest to the volcano is the warmest at around 100 degrees. I visited St Lucia in September when it was already very hot and I was not capable of entering the warmest pool.

Sulphur Springs

The idea is to take to the warm waters first to open up your pores. Once that is done apply the mud to yourself and let it dry completely. Once dry head back into the baths to wash off most of the mud. But don’t wash it off too thoroughly or you may lose some of the benefits of the mud and water’s minerals.

The St Lucia Sulphur Springs are open from 5am until midnight. There are quite a few shops at the springs as well as change rooms. Make sure you bring your own towel and wear your darkest, oldest bathers as the mud can stick.

➡️ Book Your Sulphur Springs Visit

7. Visit Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens and Mineral Baths

Not far from Sulphur Springs are more mineral baths at  Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens.  These mineral baths are small and don’t have any mud – instead, they are a pleasing shade of blue. However, the highlight of Diamond Falls is the amazing botanical gardens – I couldn’t stop taking photos.

Botanical Gardens St Lucia

This six acre park is home to a diverse range of tropical plants, flowers, birds and insects. It is also home to the charming Diamond Falls waterfalls, an old mill and a water wheel.

Diamond Falls

Top Tip:  St Lucia Travel and Tours  is the best for airport pickups and all your driving needs while on St Lucia. I met owner and tour guide Randy and two of his drivers. All of them were outstanding careful drivers on the rather rough roads of St Lucia. They were also delighted to help out with tourist info, tips and photos.

8. Take a Shower Outside

If you’re staying at one of the lovely  all-inclusive resorts in St Lucia  you are almost guaranteed to have an outdoor shower – it’s a St Lucia thing! And it is almost always warm enough in St Lucia for an outdoor shower to be completely comfortable.

9. Eat Chicken Roti

Carribean roti bread is quite similar to Indian roti bread. It is flaky and pan-fried like a flat pancake. In St Lucia, chicken roti is roti bread filled with potato and an Indian style chicken curry and is delicious. It is a popular lunch dish for locals and tourists. One of the best places to try Chicken Roti is  Fedo’s in Soufriere.

10. Visit Anse Chastanet for the Carribean Buffet

Anse Chastanet is one of the most famous resorts in St Lucia. The property opened in 1974 and revolutionized the resort world with its open fourth wall and integration of nature into the design aesthetic. It is home to one of the most popular  beaches on St Lucia , the volcanic Anse Chastanet.

Anse Chastanet Beach

I had a wonderful stay at Anse Chastanet and there were lots of things to recommend about this fantastic St Lucia resort. However, one of my highlights was the Caribbean Culinary Night on a Tuesday.

Anse Chastanet Fish

The evening begins with drinks and some rather fancy Japanese fusion-style appetizers and cocktails. I was able to watch the buffet being prepared and I so wished I had a second stomach. There were fantastic mixed salads and curries with local ingredients, a flaky giant whole fish, buttery rare beef and the most delicious roti bread was made in front of me.

Anse chastanet roti

And then the desserts. Anse Chastanet has its own chocolate lab so the buffet featured chocolate macaroons and other chocolate delights. My personal favorite was the pan-fried bananas with oodles of caramel sauce.

11. Take a Catamaran Cruise

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of St Lucia is to see it from the sea. Leave all the navigation to the captain and the crew as you relax and enjoy the views on a beautiful catamaran . Many catamaran cruises offer the opportunity to stop in a few of island’s high points like Sulphur Springs or Marigot Bay and most have opportunities for snorkeling.

➡️ Book Your Catamaran Cruise on St Lucia

12. Take a Sunset Cruise

I loved the sunset cruise I took while I was on St Lucia. My cruise was organised by Anse Chastanet but there are many tour operators on the island who can organise your sunset cruise if you’re staying elsewhere.

sunset cruise me

We left Anse Chastanet in the southwest of the island around 4pm and then headed north up to the beautiful Marigot Bay for the golden hour. All of this was of course accompanied by delicious snacks and drinks. If you’re staying in the North of the island sunset cruises tend to run between Rodney Bay and Marigot Bay.

13. Go Snorkelling and/or Scuba Diving

When it comes to water activities, Saint Lucia has plenty of options to keep you entertained. Snorkeling and diving are both popular among visitors, as the island’s marine life is both abundant and diverse and it has several coral reefs. Many excursions offer guided snorkeling tours or dive courses and opportunities.

14. Make your own Chocolate

One of the highlights of my visit to St Lucia was visting Project Chocolat . Project Chocolat is owned by Hotel Chocolat, one of my favourite UK brands. I had no idea there was a real Hotel Chocolat as well as a chocoalte experience until I visited St Lucia.

chocolate experience seederie

Hotel Chocolat has a 6 acre estate on St Lucia, the Rabot Estate. It is home to the beautiful  Hotel Rabot or Hotel Chocolat  as well as Project Chocolat, an immersive agri-tourism experience. I did the tree to bar experience. We started with cacao beans, visited the seederie and saw the baby chocolate plants, hugged some trees, drank from a just slashed down coconut, felt giant cacao podsand generally had a wonderful experience in the rainforest.

chocolate experience coconut

Then it was time to return to civilization and the very cool Project Chocolat Bar for a quick chocolate drink before being given my own pestle and mortar. I was then taught how to make my own chocolate which I poured into a mould. While the chocolate was setting I enjoyed some chocolate shopping and a delicious meal at Project Chocolat which included some amazing white chocolate mashed potatoes and of course a delicious sundae.

15. Visit Pigeon Island

Pigeon Island National Landmark is a historic site located on a small island off the coast of Saint Lucia. The island was once used as a military base by the British, and you can still see the remains of the old fortifications like Fort Rodney. You can also visit the museum on the island to learn about the island’s history and see artifacts from the colonial period. And they have a beautiful beach.

16. Head to Hummingbird Beach for Drinks

Hummingbird Beach is located in the city of Soufriere and gives Sugar Beach a run for its money regarding views of the Piton. The sand at Hummingbird Beach isn’t as pure white as Sugar Beach but it is soft and lush and the water is the usual crystal clear St Lucia standard. This is a beach frequented by both locals and tourists.

Hummingbird Beach things to do in st lucia

There are plenty of facilities at Hummingbird Beach including some colorful bars that sit on the beach. This is the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail on the beach whilst perhaps sitting under a straw umbrella. The best time to visit is as the sun sets over the palm trees and the Caribbean sea.

Hummingbird Beach

17. Visit Castries Market

Castries Market is the largest food and flea market on the island and has been operating for over 100 years. This is a great place to buy things like St Lucia spices, hot sauce and rum that make for fantastic souvenirs or even gifts if you’re feeling generous. Plus you’ll find local jewelry, crafts and art.

castries market

Castries Market is open every day but Saturday tends to be the busiest. The market is open on Sundays but there will only be a small number of stalls. The market is generally open from 730 till 8pm. There are quite a few food stalls at the market so combine some shopping with lunch or an early dinner.

18. Go to the Friday Night Street Party Fish Fry in Anse La Raye

Anse La Raye is a small fishing village located on the west coast of Saint Lucia. It’s known for its Friday night street party, where locals and tourists gather to eat, drink, and dance. You can find a variety of street food vendors selling everything from grilled fish and chicken to fried plantains and breadfruit. This is a great way to have a more authentic local experience in St Lucia.

Tet Rouge Beach

19. Take an ATV Guided Tour

An ATV tour is a perfect way to explore the lush tropical landscape of St Lucia. You’ll get much more to the heart of this beautiful island as you follow natural trails less visited by tourists.

➡️ Book Your ATV Tour

20. Visit Sugar Beach

Sugar Beach is a must-visit if you’re looking for a beach that combines natural beauty with luxury. This stunning white sand beach is nestled between the two Pitons of St. Lucia and is known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and pristine white sands. The waters near this beach are protected.

Sugar Beach

Sugar Beach is also known for having great diving and snorkeling due to its crystal clear seas. For divers, there is an 1800-foot drop at the base of the Pitons.

Sugar Beach

Sugar Beach is also home to the Viceroy Sugar Beach Resort but there is a section of the beach that is open to the general public. Bonte Restaurant and Bar is located on the beach and part of the Viceroy.

21. Visit the Sea Turtles at Grand Anse Beach

Grande Anse Beach is located on the east coast of St Lucia in the north. This sandy beach tends to be quieter than some other beaches on the island, as it isn’t easy to get there. If you visit Grand Anse beach between March and August you may be lucky enough to see nesting sea turtles.

22. Do things involving wind at Cas En Bas Beach

If you like kite surfing or wind surfing then you must head to horseshoe-shaped Cas En Bas Beach. This pretty beach is located in the North East of the island and is also known for offering horseback riding on the beach and the popular Marjorie’s Beach Shack.

23. Take a dip at Toraille Waterfall

Just a few minutes from both Soufriere and Sulphur Springs, Toraille Waterfall has a 50 foot drop. It is often combined with a visit to Sulphur Springs as the force of the waterfall can help to get rid of the last of your volanic mud. There changing rooms and a bathroom plus an entrance fee.

If you are wandering where to stay on St Lucia I have written an entire article on the best all inclusive resorts on St Lucia for adults.

St Lucia Tourism was kind enough to cover all of my costs whilst I was in St Lucia including the economy portion of my flights. However, as always my opinions are my own.
