Insects on vacation: How to spot them and how to avoid them

Insects are coming for your next vacation.

• Climate change is making it easier for bugs to multiply, and more people are traveling.
• If you find an insect during your travels, you may be able to negotiate a full or partial refund.

They had it in for Richard Campbell when he checked into a small hotel in Italy's scenic Cinque Terre area. 

At 2 a.m., he woke up to the sensation of bug bites on his arms and legs.

"I noticed a few bugs on the headboard and wall," said Campbell. "It was bedbugs!"

If it seems like insect encounters with travelers are on the rise, it's because they are. The reasons are simple: Climate change is making it easier for bugs to multiply , and more people are traveling.

"An increase in travel means an increase in bug encounters," said Mike Bentley, vice president of training and technical services for the National Pest Management Association .

That's especially true for bedbug encounters like the one Campell had. Last fall, there was a bedbug scare in Paris . Bedbug infestations have been reported in other major cities, including Hong Kong and Seoul, and on cruise ships. (Some insect experts say these reports are exaggerated and don't suggest that you cancel your travel plans.)

But there are other insect issues that could affect your next trip. And if you are bugged on your vacation, you have rights that you need to know before you go.

What happens when you're bugged on vacation?

Campbell, who runs an adventure tour business , is no stranger to difficult traveling conditions. But when he told the proprietor about the unwanted bug encounter the next morning, he didn't know what to expect.

"They were horrified when they saw me and the bed bugs," he said. "Almost immediately, the innkeeper started yelling at her husband. I guess she had told him that she didn’t like the last group of travelers – and now look what happened. It was a bit like George Constanza’s parents arguing from 'Seinfeld.' "

The owners went out of their way to fix the problem. They moved Campbell to a different room, laundered his clothes, gave him medication for his bug bites, and fumigated the room the same day.

They also refunded his room and gave him 40 euros (about $43.70) in cash as compensation for the trouble.

"They also asked me not to post a negative review online since it would ruin their business," he said.

He didn't, but plenty of other people do. You can read their misfortunes online in places like the Bedbug Report . 

Most people freak out when they see an insect on vacation. They lose their minds and make the most outrageous demands, like asking for all their money back plus reparations and an apology from the general manager. Sometimes they get it, sometimes not. But nothing makes people lose their minds like creepy crawlies in their bed at night. Nothing.

What kind of bug encounters can you expect when you travel?

Bedbugs are hardly the only insect encounters you can expect when you're on the road. Here are just a few ways travelers are getting bugged:

◾ Ants. They've always been there, but increased tourism has meant the ants are more active because people are leaving crumbs in their rooms and rental apartments. I've heard about more ant encounters in vacation rental properties and apartments, although they can also happen in hotels that aren't cleaned as frequently as they should be.

◾ Bees. If you're hiking somewhere, you might run into bees. They're usually harmless, although I've had some encounters with Africanized honeybees on a recent visit to Barbados that would make you extra cautious. "If you step on a nest, they will come out in force to defend their home," said Jeff Weinstein. a paramedic and a medical operations manager for Global Rescue. "That’s when you need to get away as quickly as possible. There's a risk of a deadly allergic reaction to a bee sting." 

◾ Mosquitoes. They're not just annoying and ever-present in the woods and near rivers. Higher rainfall means these insects are everywhere. "Mosquitoes are known for spreading diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever," said Bob Bacheler, managing director of Flying Angels , a medical transport service. "They can also carry several infectious diseases like malaria and Dengue fever."

◾ Roaches. Also a favorite of vacation rentals, they have been popping up in all kinds of places – and making travelers wish they'd stayed home.

By the way, this is hardly a comprehensive list. Don't even get me started on spiders. I'll never forget the enormous tarantula I found in the kitchen of my vacation rental in Sedona, Arizona. I turned the light on, and it scurried away.

The point is that many bugs can get you when you're traveling. And what are your rights? I'm glad you asked.

That doesn't go under the seat! Space shortage is squeezing passengers.

Airlines are almost being too nice. Why the change and will it last?

What are your rights when you find an insect during your travels?

Keith Robinson, the vice president for pest control at expense management company Fine Tune US, said hotels typically send guests to a new room in a different area when they encounter bedbugs. 

"They may also upgrade you to a better room as an apology, or refund your stay," he said.

There are no hard-and-fast rules for other insect encounters. 

If you experience severe ant infestation in, say, a vacation rental booked through Airbnb or Vrbo, you may be able to negotiate a full or partial refund. I've personally negotiated refunds on behalf of customers through my consumer advocacy organization . But there are no published policies – or even regulations – that would require a full refund when you find a bug in your apartment.

When it comes to your consumer rights, the best advice is to negotiate. There may be no rules for refunding a bedbug-infested rental, but there are consequences. A promise to post your encounter online might persuade a manager or host to fix the problem, but it's always better to ask politely. If they don't believe you, show them the pictures you took when you first found insects.

You're better off avoiding insects altogether.

Try these pro bug travel strategies

Some places are buggier than others, experts say.

"If you want to avoid insects as much as possible, don’t go to beaches, lakes, or any place with water really," said Dini Miller, an urban pest management specialist for the state of Virginia who teaches at Virginia Tech. 

In other words, if you're squeamish about insects, you might want to skip that airboat ride in the Everglades. Ditto for the Caribbean in the rainy season. Insects live everywhere, so there's no guarantee you'll escape them on vacation – but you can make an educated guess.

◾ Take a close look. " Inspect the area where you are staying," said Eric Braun, a technical services manager at Terminix. "If you notice any activity, bring it to the attention of the front desk and ask to be moved." Pro tip: Take photos of the insects before you ask for a transfer – that way, you'll have proof of insect life.

◾ Keep a clean apartment. If you're in a vacation rental, make sure you keep the place tidy, especially the kitchen. On a recent visit to Santiago, Chile, during the middle of the summer, I found the ants immediately attacked anything I left on the counter. Solution: Don't leave anything on the counter.

◾ Don't take any bugs home. Remember, insects can hitch a ride – and sometimes do. "When I arrive home, I leave my luggage outside my house," said Kathy Lopez, a frequent traveler and author from Prescott, Arizona. "I unpack my clothes, put them in a bag, dump them in the washer, wash and dry them before putting them away. I hose down my suitcase before I stash it and spray it with Lysol."

If you travel, you'll probably encounter an insect or two. Don't lose your cool – and remember that you have certain rights, even if they're not in writing.

Labor Day traffic and travel: Best and worst times to drive and fly

(NEW YORK) — Millions of Americans are gearing up to head to the airport or hit the highway for the last long weekend of summer.

Here’s what to know about Labor Day weekend travel:

More than 17 million people are forecast to be screened at U.S. airports from Thursday, Aug. 29, to Wednesday, Sept. 4 — an 8.5% increase from last year, the Transportation Security Administration said.

The TSA anticipates Friday, Aug. 30, will be its busiest day with 2.86 million travelers expected.

The TSA’s top 10 busiest travel days ever have all occurred since May.

United Airlines expects this year will be its busiest Labor Day weekend on record, with over 2.9 million passengers poised to fly between Thursday, Aug. 29, and Tuesday, Sept. 3 — up 3% from last year. United predicts Aug. 30 will be its busiest day.

American Airlines predicts this year will be its largest Labor Day operations ever, with over 3.8 million customers anticipated from Aug. 29 to Sept. 3 — up 14% from last year. American says its busiest travel days will be Aug. 29 and Aug. 30.

For Southwest Airlines, Aug. 30 and Sept. 2 are forecast to be peak travel days.

The busiest airports are anticipated to be Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, according to Hopper.

The most searched domestic destinations for Labor Day are New York City, Seattle and Los Angeles, according to Hopper.

Road travel

If you’re hitting the road on Thursday, Aug. 29, the worst time to drive is from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., according to analytics company INRIX.

On Friday, Aug. 30, the worst travel time is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. On Monday, Sept. 2, the busiest time on the roads will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., INRIX said.

AAA said drivers should expect to pay less for gas this year. The national average for gas during Labor Day weekend 2023 was $3.81; this year, prices are expected to be around $3.50.

Travel Bug, what it is and when you know you have it

Ever felt anxious not having any flights booked? Some of you might have heard about ‘catching the Travel Bug’ or the ‘feeling of wanderlust’ but what are they exactly?

What is the Travel Bug

Every single trip we take in life has an enormous power of changing us. If you are a travel lover like me, you will likely get back to your home town, with your usual routine, with the same people around you and the ‘fake freedom’ you initially think you have in your life, and realise how much happier, free and especially alive you felt while being on the other side of the world.

Picture this: You have just come back from a long trip, you saw new places, met new people, cultures, you were able to experience things you could have never imagined and every single day was a challenging adventure. You are now back home, tired but happy with your mind full of amazing memories that will forever have a special place in your heart. You remember the sense of freedom and excitement you felt while away, so you close your eyes and start daydreaming but suddenly a sense of anxiety starts to grow inside of you and you feel the need to book a new trip straight away and escape once again from your everyday life. Does it sound familiar to you? Result: Well… you caught the Travel Bug!

The term Wanderlust and why you catch the Travel Bug

The official definition of the German term ‘Wanderlust’ translates as:

‘ a strong desire to travel’, or ‘a man/woman consumed by wanderlust ’.

Although, it is much more complex than that. All of those who feel fulfilled with travelling and are on a constant search for new challenges and adventures, will sooner or later catch the Travel Bug, there is no way to escape it and it’s also highly contagious! Of course everyone enjoys a good holiday and some time away from work but for those who caught the Travel Bug, travelling literally becomes part of their everyday life. It’s their drive and inspiration for everything they do. When you are a traveller (not a tourist, there is a huge difference) you are always a traveller, every single minute of your life.

However, this sense of Wanderlust and therefore the love and insatiable need for travel and adventure might also emerge or more specifically be triggered, not only due to the love for travel, yet also from other aspects of our life. A good amount of full time travellers for example, decided to leave everything behind and travel the world after a big event in their life.

The sense of frustration that some have of everyday life, a relationship that doesn’t make you happy as it should, but also due to the ‘boredom’ of western societies, the life ideologies and milestones that we are kind of ‘forced’ to achieve since birth such as finishing school, getting a degree, finding a good job, getting a partner, getting married, having kids are simply not for all of us (and by the way you can do all of those things while travelling as well if you really want it!). Just because one wants to do things differently than the rest of society, it doesn’t mean that that person is wrong and others are right or vice versa, it simply means that what makes that person happy might not be a happy place for someone else. Happiness comes in different forms and colours and for those who caught the Travel Bug, happiness is exploring the amazing world we live in, every single corner and shape of it.

How long does it last

There is just one straight forward answer to that. Once you get it that’s the end. There is no turning back and no way to get rid of it. It’s simply FOREVER! You get it, you're screwed!

How I caught mine

For me, it was another usual day in cold and rainy London back in 2015 when me and two friends decided that we wanted to visit Thailand. Before that trip I had already been to a few countries around Europe, yet that would have been my very first long trip and international flight. A huge Airbus was waiting for us at Heathrow Airport ready to take us all the way to Bangkok. Well, that trip had the power to change me. The level of excitement when arriving in Bangkok was out of this world and since the very first day everything I saw, learned and experienced in that country changed me and my approach to travel forever. That trip was my transition from a tourist to a real traveller! We spent over two and a half amazing weeks exploring the crazy streets of Bangkok, the beautiful island of Phuket, and the paradisiac nature and beaches of Phi Phi and The Similans. Maybe it was the kindness of Thai people, the amazing nature, the thought of knowing that being so far away from home in a country where most things we are used to in western societies are so different, but I was certain that I have never felt more alive! I was free, curious, fearless, amazed, excited and felt a sense of happiness that I had never experienced before. Once back to London I could not resist. My heart was telling me to start looking for my next adventure right away! Being caught again in everyday life made me realise that routine was not for me. I needed to be on the move, explore new countries, cultures, talk to people I never met, challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone to see what I was really capable of. Well, since that moment I knew it. I had caught it, the Travel Bug and feeling of wanderlust would have never abandoned me again!

How to deal with it

It sounds crazy but for some the desire to travel might be so strong that a constant sense of anxiety and depressive feelings might arise. The reason why I’m saying it it’s because I experienced it on my own skin. The pandemic was a jail I could not escape from. When I heard the news on TV that Airports were being shut down due to the virus and I could not travel or go and see the rest of my family back home for God knows how long, it was unbearable! The sense of Wanderlust kept growing more and more every day…

I believe that there is no straight forward answer on how to deal with your sense of Wanderlust, and if there is it might be a different one for all of us. Many start to look at ways that will allow them to work remotely to be able to travel the world full time, some try to manage their holiday at work as best as they can, while others decide to momentarily, please their sense of wanderlust by taking a sabbatical year in South-east Asia… Personally, as I’m currently still working full time. I feel lucky to have a job that allows me to take short breaks every month, as well as longer trips (usually not more than two weeks) at least two to three times a year. Therefore, I manage to satisfy my desire to travel looking forward to my next trip. If you are in full time employment but caught the travel bug, spend your time planning your next trip, watch travel vlog, read about the places you want to visit and get ready for your new adventure. Trust me it helps! And most importantly, don’t be one of those people who think that travelling full time is impossible. It is, and thousands are doing it right now, especially with the popularity that smart working has gained after the pandemic. Look for a way that will allow you to leave everything behind, be free and travel the world the way you want to.

Time is the most precious thing we have in life and it should not be wasted living a life you don’t feel as yours!

However, with such ideas in mind, I perfectly understand that many people might think that you are a weirdo, that you should stop dreaming and get back to planet earth. So if you are one of those lucky people, who like me, caught the Travel Bug, you might feel lonely in your own world sometimes but promise yourself not to ever give up on your dream, no matter how crazy they sound!
