Their formation was announced through a press conference aboard a cruise ship off the coast of Honolulu, Hawaii on September 15, 1999. [1]

They debuted on November 3, 1999 with the single " A・RA・SHI " from Pony Canyon, which became the theme song for the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup hosted by Japan in 1999. [1]

ARASHI is the Japanese word for "storm". It represents their thrust of "creating a storm throughout the world".

1999: Debut

2002: J Storm and HERE WE GO!

  • On February 6, their seventh and initial single from J Storm " a Day in Our Life " was released.
  • On April 17, their eighth single " Nice na Kokoroiki " was released.

  • On February 18, their 12th single " PIKA★★NCHI DOUBLE " was released.
  • On July 21, their fourth studio album Iza, Now was released.
  • On August 18, their 13th single " Hitomi no Naka no Galaxy / Hero " was released.
  • On November 10, their first best album 5×5 THE BEST SELECTION OF 2002-2004 was released in commemoration of their fifth anniversary since debut.

  • On March 23, their 14th single " Sakura Sake " was released.

2006: ARASHIC

  • On May 17, their 16th single " Kitto Daijoubu " was released.
  • On July 5, their sixth studio album ARASHIC was released not only in Japan, but also in Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.
  • On July 31, they visited Taiwan, Thailand, and South Korea, on a tour titled the "Jet Storm Tour" where these countries were later part of their Asia concert tour. All in one day to hold a press conference and promote their latest album.
  • On August 2, their 17th single " Aozora Pedal " written by Suga Shikao was released.
  • On September 16 to 17, their two-day concert at the Taipei Arena in Taipei was held.
  • On September 22, they represented Japan at the 3rd Annual Asian Song Festival in South Korea. Two months later, they became the first group from Johnny's to perform an individual concert in South Korea. [3] [4] According to The Korea Times , their concert in South Korea was decided after around 1,500 fans gathered around Incheon International Airport during their Jet Storm tour. [5] Tickets to their concert sold out within an hour as around 150,000 people rushed to order it online. [6]
  • On October 7, their planned concert in Thailand was canceled due to the military coup. [7]
  • On February 21, their 18th single " Love so sweet " was released.
  • On May 2, their 19th single " We can make it! " was released.
  • On July 11, their seventh studio album Time was released.
  • On July 14, their concert tour SUMMER TOUR 2007 FINAL Time -Kotoba no Chikara- was held.
  • On September 5, their 20th single " Happiness " was released.

2008: Dream "A" live

  • On February 20, their 21st single " Step and Go " was released.
  • On April 23, their eighth studio album Dream "A" live was released. It was reported that the album was a hit among male buyers by the Oricon. [8]
  • On June 25, their 22nd single " One Love " was released.
  • On August 20, their 23rd single " truth / Kaze no Mukou e " was released.
  • On September 5, they became the third band after SMAP and DREAMS COME TRUE to perform at the National Olympic Stadium.
  • On November 5, their 24th single " Beautiful days " was released.

2009: 5×10 All the BEST! 1999-2009

  • On March 4, their 25th single " Believe / Kumorinochi, Kaisei " was released.
  • On May 27, their 26th single " Ashita no Kioku / Crazy Moon ~Kimi wa Muteki~ was released.
  • On July 1, their 27th single " Everything " was released.
  • On August 19, their second best album 5×10 All the BEST! 1999-2009 was released in commemoration of their tenth anniversary since debut.
  • On November 11, their 28th single " My Girl " was released.
  • On November 20, ARASHI held an event organized by House Foods titled "Arashi in Tokyo Disney Sea Premium Event" by booking the entire theme park for one night. They performed a special medley of Christmas carols and their own songs such as "A・RA・SHI" and "One Love", making them the first artists to sing their own song at the Tokyo Disney Sea. [9] [10]
  • On December 31, they made their debut at the 60th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen, which made them the first group in 21 years from Johnny's other than SMAP and TOKIO to perform on the show. [11] [12]

2010: Boku no Miteiru Fuukei

  • On February 24, they were awarded "Artist of the Year" at the 24th Japan Gold Disc Awards and received nine other awards in various categories, making them the first artist to win all ten awards simultaneously. [13]
  • On May 19, their 30th single " Monster " was released.
  • On July 7, their 31st single " To be free " was released.
  • On August 4, their ninth studio album Boku no Miteiru Fuukei was released.
  • On September 8, their 32nd single " Løve Rainbow " was released.
  • On October 6, their 33rd single " Dear Snow " was released.
  • On November 10, their 34th single " Hatenai Sora " was released.
  • On December 31, they co-hosted the 61st NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen alongside actress Matsushita Nao, making them the first group to host the show. [14] [15]

2011: Beautiful World

  • On January 5, they were awarded "Artist of the Year" in the 25th Japan Gold Disc Awards for the second year in a row. [16]
  • On January 26, their concert DVD ARASHI 10-11 TOUR "Scene" ~Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fuukei~ STADIUM was released. It sold about 618,000 copies in the first week [17] and sold another 59,000 copies, bringing the total to an estimate of 677,000 copies sold and pushing their overall music DVD sales to 4,014,000 copies. [18] They became the first artist in the Oricon history to sell over four million DVDs. [19]
  • On February 23, their 35th single " Lotus " was released. [20]
  • On July 6, their tenth studio album Beautiful World was released.
  • On June 22, their concert DVD ARASHI 10-11 TOUR "Scene" ~Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fuukei~ DOME+ sold about 539,000 copies in the first week, pushing their all-time DVD sales to 5.282 million, making them the first Japanese artist to sell over five million DVDs. [21]
  • On November 2, their 36th single " Meikyuu Love Song " was released.
  • On December 31, they co-hosted the 62nd NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen alongside actress Inoue Mao.

2012: Popcorn

  • On March 7, their 37th single " Wild at Heart " was released.
  • On May 9, their 38th single " Face Down " was released.
  • On May 23, their concert tour DVD ARASHI LIVE TOUR Beautiful World was released and sold around 572,000 copies in the first week.
  • On June 6, their 39th single " Your Eyes " was released.
  • On October 31, their 11th studio album Popcorn was released.
  • On December 26, their concert DVD ARASHI ARAFES NATIONAL STADIUM 2012 was released and sold around 624,000 copies in the first week. [22]

  • On May 28, their 44th single " Daremo Shiranai " was released.
  • On July 30, their concert DVD ARASHI Live Tour 2013 "LOVE" was released.
  • On September 19 to 20, their concert ARASHI BLAST in Hawaii was held in celebration of their 15th anniversary since debut.

  • On September 2, their 47th single " Ai wo Sakebe " was released.
  • On September 19 to 23, their concert ARASHI BLAST in Miyagi was held in Miyagi Stadium.
  • On October 21, their 14th studio album Japonism was released.
  • On December 31, they performed at the 66th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen as part of the white team and hosted the 2015–2016 Johnny's Countdown concerts. [24]

2016: Are You Happy?

  • On February 24, their 48th single " Fukkatsu LOVE " written by Takeuchi Mariya and composed by Yamashita Tatsuro was released.
  • On May 18, their 49th single " I seek / Daylight " was released.
  • On September 14, their 50th single " Power of the Paradise " was released.
  • On October 26, their 15th studio album Are You Happy? was released.
  • On December 31, they performed at the 67th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen as part of the white team with member Aiba Masaki co-hosting the show alongside actress Arimura Kasumi. For the first time, ARASHI was chosen as this year's "ootori", that is, the artist chosen to appear last and close the show.

  • On April 19, their 51st single " I'll be there " was released.
  • On June 28, their 52nd single " Tsunagu " was released.
  • On October 18, their 16th studio album "untitled" was released.
  • On November 8, their 53rd single " Doors 〜Yuuki no Kiseki〜 " was released.

2018: 20th Anniversary Tour

  • On February 21, their 54th single " Find The Answer " was released.
  • On July 25, their 55th single " Natsu Hayate " was released.
  • On October 24, their 56th single " Kimi no Uta " was released.
  • In November 2018, their concert tour ARASHI Anniversary Tour 5x20 was started. They performed a total of 18 shows in five major domes in Japan. [26]
  • On December 23, they announced an additional 32 shows, bringing the total scheduled performances to 50 shows. With an expected 2.43 million total concert attendees, it is the group's biggest tour to date, and also the biggest tour in Japanese history. [27]

2019: Hiatus announcement and 20th anniversary

  • On January 27, they announced via their official fan club site that they will be taking a break from all group activities after December 31, 2020. [28]
  • On June 26, their third best album 5×20 All the BEST!! 1999-2019 was released.
  • On September 11, their 57th single " BRAVE " was released.
  • On October 9, their official YouTube channel was opened. [29]
  • On November 3, they announced the release of their social media account through a live broadcast on their YouTube channel. They also uploaded a new music video ( Turning Up ) and announced international releases for downloading and streaming of their music catalog. [30] Furthermore, they announced they would visit Taipei, Jakarta, Singapore, and Bangkok on a two-day tour titled "Jet Storm" on November 9 to 11. [31]
  • On November 9, they appeared before the new Emperor and Empress for the public celebration of his enthronement and participated in a congratulatory song called "Ray of Water", singing the third part of it, " Journey to Harmony ". [32] [33]
  • On December 21, they performed at the opening ceremony of the new National Stadium along with DREAM COME TRUE in the event titled "National Stadium Opening Ceremony: Hello, Our Stadium". [34]
  • On December 13, they announced a documentary about their career and feelings as they approached their hiatus entitled ARASHI's Diary 〜Voyage〜 . It was distributed worldwide on Netflix from December 31 and available for one year. [35] [36] [37]
  • On December 23, a teaser video of " A-RA-SHI: Reborn " collaborating with the popular animation One Piece was published on their official YouTube channel.

2020: Towards the hiatus and This is ARASHI

  • On February 5, all of their 16 studio albums are available on digital music services. [38] [39]
  • On February 17, their planned concert in Beijing in spring 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [40] [41]
  • On April 17, they were forced to postpone ARAFES 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [42]
  • On July 29, their 58th single " Kite " written by Yonezu Kenshi was released.
  • On September 18, their digital single " Whenever You Call " produced by American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars was released.
  • On November 3, their 17th studio album This is ARASHI was released.
  • On December 30, they were awarded "Special Honor Award" at the 62nd Japan Record Awards. [43]
  • On June 12, their concert film ARASHI Anniversary Tour 5×20 FILM "Record of Memories" had its world premiere at the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival. [44]
  • On July 16, their B-sides compilation albums: URA ARA BEST 1999-2007 , URA ARA BEST 2008-2011 , URA ARA BEST 2012-2015 , and URA ARA BEST 2016-2020 was released on digital music services.
  • On July 28, their concert Blu-ray and DVD ARAFES 2020 at NATIONAL STADIUM was released and sold about 647,783 copies in the first week and topped the Oricon Weekly Video Ranking. [45]
  • On December 29, their concert video This is ARASHI LIVE 2020.12.31 was released and sold about 637,000 copies in the first week. [46]
  • On January 1, following the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on that day, ARASHI donated 67.5 million yen to the "Ishikawa Prefecture 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund" to support the affected areas. [47] The official ARASHI X account posted the following message: "We have heard that there are many people who are still suffering from the hardships of the disaster, and we have decided to do something to help. We are sincerely praying that they will be able to live in peace as soon as possible". Storm Labels donated 67.5 million yen, including earnings from the ARASHI Anniversary Tour 5×20 FILM "Record of Memories" New Year's Eve special exhibition held on December 31, 2023, and the full amount of the five members' remuneration for the same event, as requested by ARASHI. [47]

ARASHI (嵐 あらし ) is a five-member male idol group under STARTO ENTERTAINMENT consisting of Ohno Satoshi , Sakurai Sho , Aiba Masaki , Ninomiya Kazunari , and Matsumoto Jun . History [ ], 1999: debut [ ].

On September 15, 1999, their debut was announced through a press conference aboard a cruise ship off the coast of Honolulu, Hawaii.

On November 3, 1999, they released their debut single " A・RA・SHI " from Pony Canyon, featured as the theme song for the 1999 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup in Japan. It went on to become a major hit, selling 557,430 copies in its first week and almost a million copies by the end of its chart run. [1]

2000-2001: ARASHI No. 1 〜Arashi wa Arashi wo Yobu〜 [ ]

On April 5, 2000, they released their second single " SUNRISE NIPPON / HORIZON ". It sold 304,340 copies in the first week and topped the "Oricon Weekly Single Ranking". [2] The next day, they started their first concert tour at the Osaka Hall.

On July 12, 2000, they released their third single " Typhoon Generation ". It sold 256,510 copies in the first week and ranked third on the "Oricon Weekly Single Ranking". [3]

On November 8, 2000, they released their fourth single " Kansha Kangeki Ame Arashi ". It sold 258,720 copies in the first week and ranked second on the "Oricon Weekly Single Ranking". [4]

On January 24, 2001, they released their first studio album ARASHI No. 1 Arashi wa Arashi wo Yobu . It sold 267,220 copies in the first week and topped the "Oricon Weekly Single Ranking". [5] It remained their best-selling album with overall sales of about 323,030 for nearly ten years. [6]

From March 25 to April 30, 2001, ARASHI embarked on their first nationwide concert tour ARASHI Spring Concert 2001 . It took place in Sendai, Osaka, Nagoya, Hokkaido, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Kanazawa, Toyama, and Tokyo with an unprecedented 26 performances.

On April 18, 2001, they released their fifth single " Kimi no Tame ni Boku ga Iru ".

On August 1, 2001, they released their sixth and final single from Pony Canyon " Jidai ", featured as the theme song for the drama Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo 3 starring Matsumoto on Nippon TV. It was awarded the "Best Theme Song" in the 30th Television Drama Academy Award. [7]

2002: J Storm and HERE WE GO! [ ]

On February 6, 2002, they released their seventh and initial single from J Storm " a Day in Our Life ", featured as the theme song for the drama Kisarazu Cat's Eye starring Sakurai on TBS. It sold 226,480 copies in the first week and topped the "Oricon Weekly Single Ranking". [8]

On April 17, 2002, they released their eighth single " Nice na Kokoroiki ", featured as the theme song for the animation Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kouen-mae Hashutsujo on Fuji TV.

On July 17, 2002, they released their second studio album HERE WE GO! .

On October 17, 2002, they released their ninth single " PIKA☆NCHI ", featured as the theme song for the movie Pikanchi: Life is Hard Dakedo Happy starring themselves.

2003-2004: 5th anniversary [ ]

On February 13, 2003, they released their tenth single " Tomadoi Nagara ", featured as the theme song for the drama Yoiko no Mikata starring Sakurai on Nippon TV.

On July 9, 2003, they released their third studio album How's it going? .

On September 3, 2003, they released their 11th single " Hadashi no Mirai / Kotoba yori Taisetsu na Mono ", featured as the theme song for the drama Stand Up!! starring Ninomiya on TBS.

On February 18, 2004, they released their 12th single " PIKA★★NCHI DOUBLE ", featured as the theme song for the movie Pikanchi: Life is Hard Dakara Happy starring themselves. It sold 89,106 copies in the first week, making it the lowest selling single in ARASHI history. [9]

On July 21, 2004, they released their fourth studio album Iza, Now .

On August 18, 2004, they released their 13th single " Hitomi no Naka no Galaxy / Hero ", featured as the theme song for the drama Minami-kun no Koibito starring Ninomiya on TV Asahi.

On November 10, 2004, they released their greatest hits album 5×5 THE BEST SELECTION OF 2002-2004 to commemorate their fifth anniversary.

2005: One [ ]

On January 1, 2005, they released their concert DVD 2004 ARASHI! Iza, Now Tour!! .

On March 23, 2005, they released their 14th single " Sakura Sake ".

On August 3, 2005, they released their fifth studio album " One ". Following its release, they held a concert tour in summer from July 26 to August 24. In one of their performances, ARASHI presented their "Sakura Sake" on top of a transparent moving stage that travels over the top of the audience. [10] Invented by Matsumoto, the so-called "Johnny's Moving Stage" has since been used in a majority of their concerts to allow them to move closer to the audience seated at a distance from the main stage.

On November 16, 2005, they released their 15th single " WISH ", featured as the theme song for the drama Hana Yori Dango starring Matsumoto on TBS. It sold around 178,000 copies in the first week and over 300,000 copies at the end of the chart run, making it their first single to sell over 300,000 copies in total in nearly three years since "A Day in Our Life" in 2002. [11] [12]

2006: Asia tour [ ]

On May 17, 2006, they released their 16th single " Kitto Daijoubu ", featured as the theme song for Mago Mago Arashi on Fuji TV.

On July 5, 2006, they released their sixth studio album ARASHIC , not only in Japan, but also in Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. It sold 10,000 copies on its first day in Korea, and it even topped the non-Korean sales charts on the third week of July. [13]

On July 31, 2006, they embarked on a publicity tour around Asia called "Jet Storm Tour", visiting Taiwan, Thailand, and South Korea, countries which later became part of their 2006 Asia tour, all in one day to hold press conferences and promote their ARASHIC album.

On August 2, 2006, they released their 17th single " Aozora Pedal ", written by Suga Shikao and featured as the theme song for the movie Hachimitsu to Clover starring Sakurai.

On September 16 to 17, 2006, they held a two-day concert in Taipei at the Taipei Arena, performing "A・RA・SHI", "WISH", and "Kitto Daijoubu". They also represented Japan in the third annual Asia Song Festival in South Korea on September 22. Two months later, they became the first group from Johnny's to perform individual concerts in South Korea. [14] [15] According to The Korea Times , their concerts in Korea were decided since about 1,500 Korean fans gathered around the Incheon International Airport during their Jet Storm tour. [16] Their concert tickets were sold out in an hour, as some 150,000 people rushed to book tickets online. [17]

On October 7, 2006, they planned to return to Thailand to hold a concert, but was canceled due to a military coup d'état. [18]

2007: Time [ ]

On February 21, 2007, they released their 18th single " Love so sweet ", featured as the theme song for the drama Hana Yori Dango 2 starring Matsumoto on TBS. It sold over 200,000 copies in the first week and topped the "Oricon Weekly Single Ranking". [19] It was awarded the "Best 10 Singles" in the 22nd Japan Gold Disc Award the following year. [20]

On May 2, 2007, they released their 19th single " We can make it! ", featured as the theme song for the drama Bambino! starring Matsumoto on Nippon TV.

On July 11, 2007, they released their seventh studio album Time . It sold over 190,000 copies in the first week and topped the "Oricon Weekly Album Ranking". It was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan. [21]

On July 14, 2007, they held their summer concert tour, SUMMER TOUR 2007 FINAL Time -Kotoba no Chikara- .

On September 5, 2007, they released their 20th single " Happiness ", featured as the theme song for the drama Yamada Taro Monogatari starring Ninomiya and Sakurai on TBS.

2008: Dream "A" live [ ]

On February 20, 2008, they released their 21st single " Step and Go ". It sold 324,223 copies in the first week and topped the "Oricon Weekly Album Ranking". It became their first single to exceed 300,000 copies sold in the first week since "SUNRISE NIPPON / HORIZON" in 2000. [22]

On April 23, 2008, they released their eighth studio album " Dream "A" live ". It was reported to be a hit with male buyers by the Oricon despite the fact that most releases by Johnny's artists are geared towards female teens and young adults. [23]

On June 25, 2008, they released their 22nd single " One Love ", featured as the theme song for the movie Hana Yori Dango starring Matsumoto. It sold over 300,000 copies in the first week and topped the "Oricon Weekly Single Ranking". [24]

On August 20, 2008, they released their 23rd single " truth / Kaze no Mukou e ", featured as the theme song for the drama Maou starring Ohno on TBS. It sold 467,288 copies in the first week and topped the "Oricon Weekly Single Ranking". [25]

On September 5, 2008, they became the third musical group after SMAP and DREAMS COME TRUE to perform at the National Olympic Stadium.

On November 5, 2008, they released their 24th single " Beautiful days ", featured as the theme song for the drama Ryuusei no Kizuna starring Ninomiya on TBS.

2009: 10th anniversary [ ]

On March 4, 2009, they released their 25th single " Believe / Kumori Nochi, Kaisei ", featured as the theme song for the movie Yatterman .

On May 27, 2009, they released their 26th single " Ashita No Kioku / Crazy Moon ~Kimi Wa Muteki~ ", featured as the theme song for the drama The Quiz Show on Nippon TV. At the end of June, ARASHI announced their 10th anniversary tour, ARASHI Anniversary Tour 5x10 , which included three consecutive shows at the National Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.

On July 1, 2009, they released their 27th single " Everything ", featured in the au by KDDI commercial. It sold nearly 342,000 copies in its first week. [26]

On August 19, 2009, they released their greatest hits album 5×10 All the BEST! 1999-2009 , which featured most of their singles since debut, a new song with lyrics written by the members themselves, and a limited edition third disc containing ten of the group's selections. It sold over 753,000 copies in its first week. [27] Thirteen days after its release, the album broke the one million mark, a first in ARASHI's history. [28] [29] It became the first album of 2009 to break one million. [30] [31]

On November 11, 2009, they released their 28th single " My Girl ", featured as the theme song for the drama My Girl starring Aiba on TV Asahi. It sold over 178,000 copies on its first day and topped the daily Oricon single charts. At the end of its first week, it sold over 432,000 copies. [32] [33] On November 17, it was announced that ARASHI had thus monopolized the top four best first-week sales for singles of 2009. [34] [35]

On November 20, 2009, ARASHI held an event organized by House Foods called "Arashi in Tokyo Disney Sea Premium Event". Reserving the entire theme park for one night, the group performed a special medley of Christmas songs and their own songs such as "A・RA・SHI" and "One Love", which made them the first artist to sing their own songs at the Tokyo Disney Sea. [36] [37]

On December 15, 2009, during the press conference for an upcoming special drama titled "Saigo no Yakusoku", starring all of their members, ARASHI announced that their new song "Sora Takaku" will be featured-in as the theme song. [38]

On December 31, 2009, they attended the 60th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen, making it not only their first time performing on the show but also the first time in 21 years another group from Johnny's other than SMAP and TOKIO , the two traditional participants, performed at Kōhaku. [39] [40]

2010: Boku no Miteiru Fuukei [ ]

On January 5, 2010, they announced that their song "Yurase, Ima wo" will be featured as the theme song for the 2010 Winter Olympics news coverage on Nippon TV. [41] The following day, Sakurai announced that their upcoming 29th single " Troublemaker " will be featured as the theme song for the drama Tokujo Kabachi!! starring himself on TBS. [42] The single was released later on March 3.

On February 24, 2010, they were awarded the "Artist of the Year" from the Recording Industry Association of Japan on the 24th Japan Gold Disc Award. They also won nine other prizes in various categories, making them the first artist to win ten awards at once. [43]

On May 19, 2010, they released their 30th single " Monster ", featured as the theme song for the drama Kaibutsu-kun starring Ohno on Nippon TV. It sold over 543,000 copies in its first week and topped the weekly Oricon single rankings, making them the first artist to have 30 consecutive singles ranked in the charts top three since their debut. [44] [45]

On June 5, 2010, they announced to release their upcoming first studio album in two years and four months since Dream "A" Live . They also will be holding a nationwide concert tour at the National Olympic Stadium in Tokyo for four days and the five dome in Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. [46] They became the first artist to hold four concerts at the National Olympic Stadium in the same tour. [47]

On July 7, 2010, they released their 31st single " To be free ", featured in the Mitsuya Cider commercial. It topped the Oricon single charts and became their 20th consecutive number-one single since "PIKA★★NCHI DOUBLE" in 2004. [48] On the same day, Ohno released his solo single "Yukai Tsukai Kaibutsu-kun" and ranked at 2 nd place on the charts. ARASHI and Ohno accomplished the rare feat of a group and a solo artist from the group simultaneously taking the top two spots for the first time in nearly ten years. [49]

On August 4, 2010, they released their ninth studio album Boku no Miteiru Fuukei . It sold over 731,000 copies and topped the weekly Oricon album charts. [50] The album maintained its position in the second week, selling around another 125,000 copies, adding the total to 856,000 copies. [51] It became their first studio album to lead the charts for two weeks in a row.

On September 8, 2010, they released their 32nd single " Løve Rainbow ", featured as the theme song for the drama Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku starring Matsumoto on Fuji TV. [52] It sold over 529,000 copies in its first week and topped the weekly Oricon single charts. [53]

On October 6, 2010, they released their 33rd single " Dear Snow ", featured as the theme song for the movie Ooku: The Inner Chamber starring Ninomiya. [54]

On October 12, 2010, Boku no Miteiru Fuukei sold a total of a million copies, making it ARASHI's first studio album to sell over a million copies and the first album in Japan to reach a million copies sold in 2010. [55]

On November 10, 2010, they released their 34th single " Hatenai Sora ", featured as the theme song for the drama Freeter, Ie wo Kau starring Ninomiya on Fuji TV. It sold over 572,000 copies in its first week, surpassing their old personal record of 557,000 copies sold in the first week set by their debut single "A・RA・SHI" in 1999. [56] They became the first male artist to achieve six number-one singles in a year. [57]

On December 31, 2010, ARASHI co-hosted the 61st NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen with Matsushita Nao, making them the first group to host the show. [58] [59]

2011: Beautiful World [ ]

On January 5, 2011, the 25th Japan Gold Disc Awards awarded ARASHI the "Artist of the Year" for the second year in a row. [60]

On January 26, 2011, they released their concert DVD " ARASHI 10-11 TOUR "Scene" ~Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fuukei~ STADIUM ". It sold over 618,000 copies in its first week [61] and sold another 59,000 copies, bringing the total to an estimate of 677,000 copies sold and pushing their overall music DVD sales to 4,014,000 copies. [62] As a result, ARASHI became the first artist in the Oricon history to sell over four million DVDs. [63]

On February 23, 2011, they released their 35th single " Lotus ", featured as the theme song for the drama Bartender starring Aiba on TV Asahi. [64] In May, they announced to hold their concert tour in July, September, and January the following year, titled "ARASHI LIVE TOUR Beautiful World". They also announced to hold a charity event at the Tokyo Dome for three days starting June 24, 2011.

On July 6, 2011, they released their tenth studio album Beautiful World . According to Matsumoto, the title was chosen to reflect on ARASHI's thoughts on the future of Japan after the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake. Their nationwide tour was held at four of the five major domes and the National Olympic Stadium, making it their fourth consecutive year performing at the stadium. [65]

On June 22, 2011, the Oricon announced that ARASHI's concert DVD, ARASHI 10-11 TOUR "Scene" ~Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fuukei~ DOME+ , sold over 539,000 copies in its first week, pushing their all-time DVD sales to 5.282 million, making them the first Japanese artist to sell over five million DVDs. [66]

On October 19, 2011, NHK announced that ARASHI and actress Inoue Mao will be the hosts for the 62nd NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen. This was the second year in a row for ARASHI to be in charge of the white team. [67]

On November 2, 2011, they released their 36th single " Meikyuu Love Song ", featured as the theme song for the drama Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de starring Sakurai on Fuji TV. It sold over 240,000 copies on its first day [68] and over 530,000 copies in its first week. [69]

In December 2011, it was announced that ARASHI topped four categories in the 2011 Oricon yearly rankings. Beautiful World sold a total of 908,000 copies, making it the top-selling album of 2011 in Japan. This marks the third year in a row ARASHI has topped the annual Oricon albums chart, becoming the first artist to do so in 20 years. This year's ranking also marks their third year in a row topped the music DVD charts as ARASHI 10-11 TOUR "Scene" ~Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fuukei~ STADIUM sold over 793,000 copies, making it the best selling music DVD in the Oricon DVD ranking history. The second best selling music DVD for 2011 was ARASHI 10-11 TOUR "Scene" ~Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fuukei~ DOME+ , which sold over 673,000 copies. [70]

ARASHI is the second artist with the highest total sales revenue in Japan in 2011, with ¥15.369 billion. [71]

2012: Popcorn [ ]

On March 7, 2012, they released their 37th single " WILD AT HEART ", featured as the theme song for the drama Lucky Seven starring Matsumoto on Fuji TV. It sold over 550,000 copies in its first week, making it their third highest first week sales after "Hatenai Sora" and "A・RA・SHI". [72]

On May 9, 2012, they released their 38th single " Face Down ", featured as the theme song for the drama Kagi no Kakatta Heya starring Ohno on Fuji TV. It sold over 526,000 in its first week. [73]

On May 23, 2012, they released their concert tour DVD, ARASHI LIVE TOUR Beautiful World . It sold around 572,000 copies in its first week.

On June 6, 2012, they released their 39th single " Your Eyes ", featured as the theme song for the drama Mikeneko Holmes no Suiri starring Aiba on Nippon TV. It sold over 478,000 copies in its first week. [74]

On July 20, 2012, they announced a concert titled "ARAFES" which will be held at the National Olympic Stadium on September 20 and 21 of the same year. It marked their fifth consecutive year to perform there. They also planned to perform there again the following year. The concept of "ARAFES" is that the setlist was determined through voting by fans, from a total of 240 songs including singles, couplings, and album tracks. A total of 44 tracks were chosen to be performed. [75]

On October 31, 2012, they released their 11th studio album Popcorn . It sold over 750,000 copies in its first week and was certified for a Triple Platinum by the RIAJ. Following its release, a concert tour was held from December to January and was reported as of December 15 to have attracted 730,000 people with 16 performances.

On December 26, 2012, they released their concert DVD, ARASHI ARAFES NATIONAL STADIUM 2012 . It sold over 624,000 copies and by the end of January the following year remained at the forefront of the Oricon charts, entering its fifth week. [76]

At the end of the year, they hosted the 63rd NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen for their third consecutive year with actress Horikita Maki. Ninomiya declared, "I want to win this year." Sakurai added, "We want to do something new as artists." [77]

It was announced by the Oricon that ARASHI is the third artist with the highest total sales revenue in Japan in 2012, with ¥10.454 billion. [78]

2013: Love [ ]

On March 6, 2013, they released their 40th single " Calling / Breathless ", featured as the theme song for the drama Last Hope starring Aiba on Fuji TV and the movie Platinum Data starring Ninomiya. [79] It sold a record number of copies in its first week, around 756,000. This sales record makes the 40th single their most successful in terms of first week sales. The single went on to sell over 853,467 copies. [80]

On May 29, 2013, they released their 41st single " Endless Game ", featured as the theme song for the drama Kazoku Game starring Sakurai on Fuji TV.

On September 21 and 22, 2013, they held a concert in the National Olympic Stadium, ARASHI ARAFES'13 NATIONAL STADIUM 2013 . This marked their sixth year in a row performing at the stadium.

On October 23, 2013, they released their 12th studio album LOVE . It sold over 670,000 copies in its first week. [81] Following its release, they embarked on a concert tour from November 8 to December 22. [82]

At the end of the year, they hosted the 64th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen for their fourth consecutive year with actress Ayase Haruka.

It was announced by the Oricon that ARASHI is the artist with the highest total sales revenue in Japan for 2013, with ¥14.192 billion. [83]

2014: 15th Anniversary [ ]

On February 12, 2014, they released their 42nd single " Bittersweet ", featured as the theme song for the drama Shitsuren Chocolatier starring Matsumoto on Fuji TV.

On April 30, 2014, they released their 43rd single " GUTS! ", featured as the theme song for the drama Yowakutemo Katemasu starring Ninomiya on Nippon TV.

On May 21, 2014, they released their concert DVD and Blu-ray, ARASHI ARAFES'13 NATIONAL STADIUM 2013 . It contains their live performance from September 22 last year at the National Olympic Stadium. This is also the first time their concerts have been released on Blu-ray.

On May 28, 2014, they released their 44th single " Daremo Shiranai ", featured as the theme song for the drama Shinigami-kun starring Ohno on TV Asahi. In June, they held an event called "ARASHI no Waku Waku Gakko 2014: Deepening the Bond of Friendship". It was broadcast live in Shanghai and Singapore. On the event, they announced that they will be releasing a new album in the fall and holding a concert tour across five dome nationwide. The tour had a total of 18 performances and had amassed an audience of 840,000, making it the largest dome tour to date. [84]

In celebration of their anniversary, the five members of ARASHI starred together in the film PIKA☆★☆NCHI LIFE IS HARD TABUN HAPPY , 10 years after its last release. [85]

On July 30, 2014, they released their concert DVD, ARASHI Live Tour 2013 "LOVE" .

On September 19 and 20, 2014, they had a concert in Hawaii, ARASHI BLAST in Hawaii , in celebration of their 15th anniversary.

On October 22, 2014, they released their 13th studio album THE DIGITALIAN .

At the end of the year, they hosted the 65th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen for their fifth consecutive year with actress Yoshitaka Yuriko. [86]

It was announced by Oricon that they were the artist with the highest total sales revenue in Japan for 2014, with ¥13.823 billion. [87]

2015: Japonism [ ]

On February 25, 2015, ARASHI released their 45th single " Sakura ", featured as the theme song for the drama Ouroboros starring Ikuta Toma and Oguri Shun on TBS. This is the first time they have provided songs for a drama where none of their members have starred. [88] It sold 465,000 copies in its first week and topped the weekly Oricon single rankings. [89] In addition, the DVD and Blu-ray of a film starring ARASHI, PIKA☆★☆NCHI LIFE IS HARD TABUN HAPPY , was also released on the same day. It sold 72,000 copies and 88,000 copies in its first week respectively and topped both the weekly Oricon DVD and Blu-ray rankings. The first week sales of 88,000 copies is the highest record for any Japanese movie on Blu-ray. [90]

On April 15, 2015, they released their concert DVD, ARASHI BLAST in Hawaii .

On May 13, 2015, they released their 46th single " Aozora no Shita, Kimi no Tonari ", featured as the theme song for the drama Yokoso Wagaya e starring Aiba on Fuji TV. [91] It sold 501,010 copies in its first week and became their second chart-topping single of the year. [92]

On September 2, 2015, they released their 47th single " Ai wo Sakebe ", featured in the Recruit Zexy commercial. It sold 463,000 copies in its first week and topped the weekly Oricon single rankings. This became their 36th consecutive single to top the chart. [93]

On September 19 to 23, 2015, they held a series of concerts titled "ARASHI BLAST in Miyagi" in Miyagi Stadium. The concerts were part of the second installment of "ARASHI BLAST" which started in Hawaii the previous year. These concerts were meant to aid the reconstruction of the disaster area which was affected during the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake. The concerts brought together an accumulated total of 208,000 fans, and marked the first time in eight years that the group performed in the Tōhoku region. [94]

On October 21, 2015, they released their 14th studio album Japonism . It sold over 950,000 copies and was certified for a Million by the Recording Industry Association of Japan. [95] It became the highest selling album of the year in Japan. [96] They also topped the music DVD charts with their ARASHI BLAST in Hawaii as well as the music Blu-ray charts with ARASHI LIVE TOUR 2014 THE DIGITALIAN . [97] [98]

From November 6 until December 23, 2015, ARASHI embarked on a dome tour hitting the five significant domes. With the wrap-up of the time, they had mobilized 10,163,000 of concert attendees in their last 17 years, setting a record number of attendees in the shortest number of years. [99] To celebrate their 17th anniversary, ARASHI announced that they would continue the Japonism tour in 2016 with ARASHI "Japonism Show" in Arena . This would be their first Arena concert tour for nine years since ARASHI SUMMER TOUR 2007 Time -Kotoba no Chikara- . [100]

At the end of the year, ARASHI attended the 66th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen as part of the white team, and hosted the Johnny's Countdown 2015–2016 concert. [101] In addition to that, Oricon announced their annual single rankings, with three of ARASHI singles they released this year occupy the 9th, 11th and 12th positions respectively. [102] ARASHI is the artist with the highest total sales revenue in Japan for 2015, with ¥14,328 billion. [103]

2016: Are You Happy? [ ]

On February 24, 2016, they released their 48th single " Fukkatsu LOVE ", written by Takeuchi Mariya and composed by Yamashita Tatsuro . It was featured in the NTT DOCOMO "d Hits" commercial. The single sold 485,006 copies in its first week and topped the Oricon weekly ranking. [104]

On May 18, 2016, they released their 49th single " I seek / Daylight ", featured as the theme song for the drama Sekai Ichi Muzukashii Koi starring Ohno on Nippon TV and the drama 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi starring Matsumoto on TBS. The single sold 737,951 in its first week and topped the Oricon single chart. It retained the number one position for the following week by selling an additional 48,420 copies. [105] [106]

On September 14, 2016, they released their 50th single " Power of the Paradise ", featured as the theme song for Rio de Janeiro Olympics on Nippon TV. [107]

On October 26, 2016, they released their 15th studio album Are You Happy? . The album sold over 636,000 copies in its first week and topped the Oricon charts. Following its release, ARASHI held a concert tour from November 2016 to January 2017, performing at all the major dome in Japan. It went on to become the highest selling album of 2016 in Japan. It was also announced that ARASHI had the highest total sales revenue in Japan for 2016, with ¥12.183 billion and topped the music Blu-Ray charts with ARASHI BLAST in Miyagi and ARASHI LIVE TOUR 2015 Japonism . [108]

On December 31, 2016, ARASHI attended the 67th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen as part of the white team, with group member Aiba hosting alongside Arimura Kasumi. For the first time, ARASHI were chosen to be this year's "ootori", the act chosen to perform last and close the show.

2017: "untitled" [ ]

On February 27, 2017, they won the "Artist of the Year" on the 31st Japan Gold Disc Award held by the Recording Industry Association of Japan. It is awarded to the artist with the most sales, and ARASHI have won it for the third consecutive year and for the fifth time. In addition, their album Are You Happy? was selected as "Best 5 Albums", and video works ARASHI BLAST in Miyagi and ARASHI LIVE TOUR 2015 Japonism were selected as "Best Music Videos". [109]

On April 19, 2017, ARASHI released their 51st single " I'll be there ", featured as the theme song for the drama Kizoku Tantei starring Aiba on Fuji TV. In addition, they also released a live DVD, ARASHI LIVE TOUR 2016-2017 Are You Happy? on May 31. The limited edition of this DVD also features their concert in Yokohama Arena in August 2016 from their ARASHI "Japonism Show" in Arena tour. [110] It topped the Oricon charts, selling approximately 650,000 copies in its first week. [111]

On June 28, 2017, they released their 52nd single " Tsunagu ", featured as the theme song for the movie Shinobi no Kuni starring Ohno. [112] The single sold 389,000 copies in its first week and topped the Oricon weekly ranking. [113] They also announced in July 2017 that they would embark on a five dome concert tour from November 17, 2017, to January 14, 2018. [114]

On October 18, 2017, they released their 16th studio album "untitled" . The regular edition contains 18 tracks, including three previously released singles, four unit songs, as well as ARASHI's first attempt at a suite that incorporates melodies from various genres into a song of over 10 minutes and is said to represent the group's past, present, and future.

On November 8, 2017, they released their 53rd single " Doors 〜Yuuki no Kiseki〜 ", featured as the theme song for the drama Saki ni Umareta Dake no Boku starring Sakurai on Nippon TV. The single also includes a song titled "NOW or NEVER" which used as the theme song for Puzzle and Dragon commercial.

2018: 20th Anniversary Tour [ ]

On February 21, 2018, they released their 54th single " Find The Answer ", featured as the theme song for the drama 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi Season II starring Matsumoto on TBS. The coupling song included in the regular edition, "Shiro ga Mau", was used for Nippon TV's broadcast of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, which featured Sakurai as the main newscaster.

On July 25, 2018, they released their 55th single " Natsu Hayate ", featured as the theme song for Netto Koshien on TV Asahi.

On October 24, 2018, they released their 56th single " Kimi no Uta ", featured as the theme song for the drama Boku to Shippo to Kagurazaka starring Aiba on TV Asahi.

In November 2018, they began their 20th anniversary tour, the ARASHI Anniversary Tour 5x20 . They performed a total of 18 shows at the five major domes in Japan. [115] On December 23, they announced an additional 32 dates, bringing the total scheduled performances to 50. With an expected 2.43 million total concert attendees, it is the group's largest tour to date, and also the largest tour in Japanese history. [116]

2019: Hiatus announcement and 20th anniversary [ ]

On January 27, 2019, ARASHI announced on their official fan club website that they would cease all group activities after December 31, 2020. The statement was published through a video where all five members of the group appeared together. The announcement trended on Twitter. [117]

On June 26, 2019, they released their 20th anniversary album , featuring all their singles and a new song, "5x20".

On September 11, 2019, they released their 57th single " BRAVE ", featured as the image song for Rugby World Cup 2019 on Nippon TV.

In October 2019, an official YouTube channel was opened with five official music videos: "Happiness", "Love So Sweet", "Monster", "Truth" and the one that is their signature song "A・RA・SHI", [118] and later, live versions of the songs. In addition, on November 3, 2019, on their YouTube channel, they made a live announcement of the release of the official social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and Weibo), as well as a new music video in their YouTube channel ("Turning up") and the international digital release for download and streaming of their musical catalog. [119]

They also announced a two-day Asia tour called "Jet Storm", visiting Taipei, Jakarta, Singapore and Bangkok on November 9 to 11, as well as concert in Beijing for Spring 2020, through their official Instagram account. [120] One day before the tour, on November 9, ARASHI appeared before the new Emperor and Empress, for the public celebration of his enthronement, participating in a congratulatory song called "Ray of water", singing the third part of it, " Journey to Harmony ". [121] [122]

ARASHI appeared at the opening ceremony of the new National Stadium, along with DREAMS COME TRUE , in the event called "National Stadium Opening Event: Hello, Our Stadium", on December 21. [123] They announced that, after that, and before the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, they would hold two concerts there, scheduled for May 15 and 16. [124] [125]

On December 13, ARASHI announced a documentary about their career and their feelings as they approach the group's hiatus. The documentary, called Arashi's Diary 〜Voyage〜 , would be distributed on Netflix worldwide from December 31, 2019, being available for one year. [126] [127] [128] [129] On December 23 they had a surprise for the fans, as their YouTube channel revealed a teaser video for the song " A-RA-SHI: Reborn ", in collaboration with the anime One Piece , which, as the group, also celebrated its 20th anniversary. The video has the five members of the group mingling with the crew from the anime, up until the moment when ARASHI is to give a concert. The full video was released on January 4, 2020.

2020: Towards the hiatus and This is ARASHI [ ]

It was revealed on February 5, 2020, in their official site at Johnny's net, that, on the 7th, they would be releasing all 16 albums (except for compilation and soundtrack albums) in digital form, in total, 256 songs. [130] [131]

On February 17, 2020, an announcement was made at their official site [132] about the cancellation of the concert that they had planned for Beijing in Spring 2020. The cause referred to was the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The news was confirmed by the group via video shared in their official Weibo page, and later on covered by Sakurai Sho during his Nippon TV's News Zero newscast. [133] [134] [135]

As of April 17, 2020, ARASHI announced that ARAFES 2020 would have to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [136]

On July 29, they released their 58th single " Kite ".

On September 15, on the official page at Johnny's net, an announcement was made that ARAFES 2020 at National Stadium would be held, pending more information. [137] Additionally, they announced that their first album since three years and also the last before their hiatus, titled This is ARASHI , would be released on their 21 st anniversary of their CD debut, November 3, 2020. [138]

A collaboration with singer-songwriter Bruno Mars was announced on their social media and official page. The result, " Whenever You Call ", the first full English song for the group, was released on September 18. [139]

On October 12, it was announced that ARAFES 2020 would take place on November 3, their CD debut anniversary day. [140] A special page opened for the event revealed that it would be an online concert, open to both fan club members and non-members. [141] Several days later, an English page was opened, where audiences not belonging to the fan club could see the stream, also offering a choice of watching with English subtitles. [142] [143] The online concert was available in a repeat streaming from November 6 to 8. With this re-distribution, ticket sales were again open for people who had not bought on the original date, or for those that had bought from the Japanese site and had learned that the English site had English subtitles. [144] As a result, an estimated 10 million people were able to watch the stream. [145]

On November 3, 2020, they released their 17th studio album This is ARASHI .

In a message to members of the fan club, posted on November 12, 2020, they revealed they would have a concert on December 31. The live performance concert, called "This Is ARASHI", similar to ARAFES 2020, was held with no audience, but with online live streaming. [146] On November 12, 2020, their participation in Fuji TV's music program FNS Music Festival was announced. This year would represent their 22 th appearance on the program, but the first to appear on both days. [147]

On December 30, they won the Special Honor Award at the 62nd Japan Record Awards. [148]

ARASHI was active until the last day before the hiatus. They announced on their official fan club a live concert for the 31st, [149] while NHK's Kōhaku Uta Gassen announced their appearance on the 71st edition, making it the 12th time for them there. [150]

2021–present: Hiatus and 25th anniversary reunion [ ]

Although ARASHI is currently on hiatus starting from 2021, back in November 2020, they announced via their official fan club that the fan club would continue delivering content, [151] and they continue to make releases, although primarily compilations of their musical activities prior to the hiatus. Apart from Ohno who wishes to be absent from public appearances, the remaining ARASHI members are continuing activities but as individuals, whether through variety shows, acting or on YouTube. [151]

Their concert film, ARASHI Anniversary Tour 5×20 FILM "Record of Memories" had its world premiere at the 24 th Shanghai International Film Festival on June 12, 2021. In a video message, member Matsumoto Jun said that due to the pandemic, many of their planned concerts could not take place and the film is a part of their gift of thanks to everyone who waited for them. [152] They also released ARAFES 2020 at NATIONAL STADIUM on Blu-ray and DVD on July 28, 2021. It topped the Oricon video chart with first-week sales of 647,783 copies. [153]

ARASHI had success on the charts in 2021 with the release of the digital albums URA ARA BEST 1999-2007 ( 1999–2007 , 2008–2011 , 2012–2015 , 2016–2020 ) and 5×20 All the BEST!! 1999-2019 (Special Edition) on July 16. The five albums occupied the top five of the Oricon Weekly Digital Album Ranking chart in the week after release, making it the first time the band monopolized the top five on a Japanese chart. [154]

ARASHI released This is ARASHI LIVE 2020.12.31 on December 29, 2021. According to Oricon, it achieved first place in three video categories at the same time with first-week sales of 637,000 copies and with this, their works have had sales of more than 500,000 copies in the first week for nine consecutive years. [155]
