Iceman Wins Kentucky PGA Section Championship Presented by Club Car, Corebridge Financial, and Rolex

kpga golf tour

Louisville, KY – This week, the Kentucky PGA community converged on Valhalla Golf Club for its 73rd annual Kentucky PGA Professional Championship presented by Club Car, Corebridge Financial, and Rolex. As the end of the summer approaches, the legendary track has firmed up, making the 2024 PGA Championship venue even more of a challenge for the 63 PGA members who were battling for the title of top pro in the state.

Monday's first round provided plenty of scoring opportunities, with 117 birdies and 2 eagles being scored, but, major-level courses like Valhalla always punch back. Every player in the field recorded at least one bogey, and the difficult stretch from hole 12 to 16 only provided 21 birdies on the day compared to 180 bogeys or worse. The low-round of the day was shared by Zach Haynes and Brad Maynard, who both finished at 70(-2). The co-leaders recorded the only rounds under-par on the first day of competition. Haynes led the field with 6 birdies including three straight on holes 9, 10, and 11. Former section champions Grover Justice and Tom Walters stayed close to the leaders, recording respective rounds of 74(+2) and 75(+3).

Early on in the second round, it looked as if it was going to be a two-horse race between Maynard and Haynes for the championship. A birdie on the par-5 second hole gave Haynes an early lead at -3, but Maynard responded with back-to-back birdies on holes 4 and 5 to claim the solo lead at -4. The pair hit a rough patch as they wrapped up the front nine, with each player making multiple bogeys, but Maynard maintained a two stroke advantage at -2 for the tournament. Daniel Iceman kept his name in contention as he shot a one-under 35 on the front nine, finding himself just two shots back of the lead as he made the turn.

Maynard started out strong on the back nine, recording 5 pars in a row before finding trouble on holes 15 and 16, which he played +3. Maynard finished with a second round 76(+4) taking him to 146(+2) for the tournament. Haynes managed the back nine well to finish at 144(E) for the tournament.

In the end, 36 holes were not enough to declare a winner as Daniel Iceman birdied hole #18 to join Zach Haynes at even-par (144) for the tournament. The pair of pros headed back to the tenth tee, where they both missed the fairway to the left. Both golfers laid up with their second shots, but only Iceman, the reigning Rolex Larry Gilbert KPGA Player of the Year, was able to find the green with his third shot, which settled just ten feet from the pin. Haynes' third shot unfortunately found the front bunker, meaning that he needed to get up-and-down to force a second playoff hole. He was able to manage the bunker handily, but his putt barely missed the cup as it rolled past. Iceman, only needing to two-putt for the win, knocked his first putt within inches of the hole and tapped in for the victory.

The victory not only grants Iceman the title of Kentucky PGA Professional Champion, but it also secures him a spot in the 2025 national PGA Professional Championship, which will take place next April in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Iceman will be joined by second and third-place finishers Zachary Haynes and Grover Justice. Brad Maynard, Ryne Burnett, and Mitchel Moore will serve as alternates for the national tournament.

Golf’s DP World Tour and PGA Tour are expanding their partnership with the Korea Professional Golfers’ Association (KPGA), which will include the launch of a new tournament in Korea.

The inaugural Korea Championship, co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and KPGA, will be played next April at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon, with a US$2 million prize fund on offer. It marks the first DP World Tour event in Korea in a decade.

Meanwhile, the winner of the KPGA’s Genesis Point Award will also earn membership onto the DP World Tour for the following year, beginning with the 2023 campaign. The 2022 Genesis Point Award winner Yeongsu Kim has secured this exemption for next year’s DP World Tour season.

The top finishers on the Genesis Point list will also earn entry into various stages of the DP World Tour Qualifying School, which takes place later in 2023. The three tours will continue to discuss the expansion of additional pathway commitments for 2024 and beyond.

In addition to the confirmed exemptions, the KPGA will work alongside the DP World Tour and PGA Tour on other key business areas, including strategic development and commercial growth. The trio also plan to collaborate further on media rights strategy and enhancements to the player pathway, including access to the PGA Tour’s Korn Ferry Tour.

“The KPGA has a strong history of producing exceptional talent and we are delighted to confirm these formal pathways, giving players clearly defined routes to showcase their skills on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour,” said Keith Pelley, chief executive officer of the DP World Tour.

“Combined with our tournament in Korea next April, we look forward to working closely with the KPGA and the PGA Tour to inspire, and to enable, future generations of Korean players to reach the very top of the men’s professional game.”

Jay Monahan, commissioner of the PGA Tour, added: “We look forward to seeing the next set of young stars from this proud golf country make their way onto the DP World Tour and perhaps subsequently onto the PGA Tour in future seasons.”

old course retirement

One small, costly gaffe will not sour otherwise stellar career as this 7-time LPGA winner retires at St. Andrews

2168405550

Oisin Keniry/R&A

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — It’s a harsh reality for a former AIG Women’s Open champion who won a further six times on the LPGA Tour with five top-10 finishes in the U.S. Women’s Open amongst a total of 16 in majors and career earnings in excess of $10 million. But I.K. Kim, who has announced her retirement from competitive golf, will be most remembered for a one-foot putt.

It came on the 72nd green of what was then the Kraft Nabisco Championship (now the Chevron Championship) and Kim had only to tap-in for what would have been her maiden major title. Only she didn’t. The ball from 14 inches away lipped-out and Kim went on to lose the playoff to Sun-Young Yoo. More than four years would pass before she would win another tournament.

And now it is all over. Just after shooting 75 in the final round of the AIG Women’s Open at St. Andrews, Kim declared that her three-over-par effort would also be the last of her career.

“I've been waiting for this moment when that day would come, and it came today,” she said. “I just knew when it’s the time that I would feel it, and I've been thinking it for the last two years, and where would be the better place to play my last 18 holes. This is my 18 years, and I feel like all the holes add up to 18 and everything keeps coming 18, and I was like, it must be it. I wanted to play 18 years on the LPGA, and I have accomplished that.”

142346322

I.K. Kim is consoled by her caddie John Limanti after missing a 14-inch putt on the 18th hole to win the 2012 Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Kohjiro Kinno

Typically, for a perennially shy individual, Kim neglected to take time for a wee wave from the Swilcan Bridge, something of a traditional way to say farewell to the Old Course and the Home of Golf.

“I felt a little shy,” admitted Kim. “It because it's such a place where all these legends have walked, passed by. Yeah, I didn't really take a moment. I just quickly walked past.”

Which is a shame. Kim has much to be proud of in a career that climaxed with her hitting the first shot off the first tee on the Old Course on Thursday morning. Touchingly, after winning the 2010 Lorena Ochoa Invitational—the same year she was rookie of the year on the Ladies European Tour—she donated all of her $220,000 winnings to charity. The donation amounted to nearly 20 percent of her total winnings at that point in the season.

“I’m most proud of the hard work that I’ve put in,” said Kim. “I wasn’t most talented or most gifted, but I loved the game. I was willing to travel anywhere to play golf and learn the game, and I want to thank all the girls here. I’ve learned so much from them.”

DP World Tour, PGA TOUR announce expansion of relationship with Korea Professional Golfers' Association

The DP World Tour and PGA TOUR jointly announced today an expansion to the relationship with the Korea Professional Golfers’ Association (KPGA) that will see the KPGA’s Genesis Point Award Winner earn membership onto the DP World Tour for the ensuing season, beginning with the current 2023 campaign, and the launch of a brand new US$2 million tournament in Korea.

DP World Tour flag logo

A raft of benefits will also see the top finishers on the Genesis Point list earning entry into various stages of the DP World Tour Qualifying School, which takes place later in 2023. The three Tours intend to further discuss expansion of additional pathway commitments for 2024 and beyond.

Yeongsu Kim has secured this exemption for the 2023 DP World Tour season after finishing the 2022 campaign as the Genesis Point Award Winner, having claimed his first career KPGA victory in October at the Genesis Championship before winning again at the season-ending LG Signature Players Championship. As announced previously, as a result of winning the Genesis Championship in October, he will also gain entry into July’s Genesis Scottish Open, the Rolex Series event which is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR.

As part of its commitment to supporting professional golf in Korea, the DP World Tour will also mark its return to the country for the first time in 10 years next April for the inaugural Korea Championship. The tournament, which will be co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and KPGA, will be played at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon with a US$2 million prize fund on offer. Additional information regarding the Korea Championship will follow in due course.

Today’s announcement further enhances the playing opportunities for international players to compete at the highest levels of men’s professional golf. As part of this system, the leading 10 players on DP World Tour’s Race To Dubai Rankings [in addition to those already exempt] will earn cards on the PGA TOUR, beginning with the 2024 season – an aspect of the partnership between the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour announced in June.

In addition to the exemptions confirmed today, the KPGA will also work alongside the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR on other key business areas, including strategic development and commercial growth, as well as future collaboration on media rights strategy and enhancements to the player pathway, including access to the Korn Ferry Tour.

Keith Pelley, Chief Executive Officer of the DP World Tour, said, “The KPGA has a strong history of producing exceptional talent and we are delighted to confirm these formal pathways, giving players clearly defined routes to showcase their skills on the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR.

“Combined with our tournament in Korea next April, we look forward to working closely with the KPGA and the PGA TOUR to inspire, and to enable, future generations of Korean players to reach the very top of the men’s professional game.”

Jay Monahan, Commissioner of the PGA TOUR, said: “Sungjae Im, K.H. Lee, Si Woo Kim and Joo-hyung ‘Tom’ Kim are all becoming household names in the United States thanks in large part to the contributions they made this past September for the International Team at the 2022 Presidents Cup. What each of those young stars has in common is that they all honed their craft at the KPGA, which continues a proud tradition of producing world-class talent each and every year. We look forward to seeing the next set of young stars from this proud golf country make their way onto the DP World Tour and perhaps subsequently onto the PGA TOUR in future seasons.”

Ja-Cheol (J.C.) Koo, Chairman of the Korea Professional Golfers’ Association, said, “It has been our honour to see Korean Tour winners go on to have similar success at the top echelon of the men’s professional game. We are certain that today’s announcement will help further grow the sport in Korea, and we are grateful to be officially welcomed into the meritocracy that the men’s professional game provides.”

Korean stars who have previously been victorious on both the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR include K.J. Choi, Y.E. Yang and Seung-Yul Noh. Choi jointly holds the record for most PGA TOUR victories by an Asian golfer with eight, including the 2011 PLAYERS Championship.

Choi said: “I’m delighted the KPGA, DP World Tour and PGA TOUR have expanded their relationship which will only benefit Korean golfers. Our young players will have added motivation to excel in the game as there is now a clear career pathway for them to compete on the KPGA, and subsequently play against the best players in the world on the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR. This announcement is a wonderful development for Korean golf.”

2024 Korn Ferry Tour Finals: How it works, what you need to know

Thirty PGA TOUR cards will be finalized after the four-event Korn Ferry Tour Finals. (Jennifer Perez/PGA TOUR)

Thirty PGA TOUR cards will be finalized after the four-event Korn Ferry Tour Finals. (Jennifer Perez/PGA TOUR)

Quick-hit guide to stakes of four-event Korn Ferry Tour Finals, which will finalize 30 PGA TOUR cards

Change Text Size

It’s time for the four-event series that shapes the PGA TOUR’s future, the Korn Ferry Tour Finals.

The 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Finals brings the season-long race for 30 PGA TOUR cards to a dramatic close, as the top 30 on the season-long standings after the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance will earn 2025 PGA TOUR cards. The Korn Ferry Tour Finals also finalizes exempt and conditional Korn Ferry Tour status for next season, via the top-75 and top-100 thresholds respectively.

Points do not reset into the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, a change introduced in 2023. The race for PGA TOUR cards is purely cumulative across the season-long Korn Ferry Tour Points List from January through October. Eligibility for each event is determined by the season-long Points List into each event, with field reduction after each event (156, 144, 120, 75 players qualify).

"Only 30 guys get to fulfill their dream, and half of them will be without a job for the next year," said University of North Carolina alum Ryan Gerard, on the brink of a TOUR card as the Finals begin. "You've got to go out there and perform; otherwise you might not have a job."

For players who have clinched #TOURBound status into the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, the stakes remain high, as the No. 1 player on the season-long standings after the Korn Ferry Tour Championship will earn exempt 2025 TOUR membership and spots in the 2025 U.S. Open and THE PLAYERS Championship.

In another change from the pre-2023 Korn Ferry Tour Finals format, tournament field sizes are reduced as the series proceeds, a cadence that aligns with the FedExCup Playoffs. The top 156 on the season-long Korn Ferry Tour Points List qualify for the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Chevron (Finals #1), with the top 144 after the Albertsons Boise Open qualifying for the Simmons Bank Open for the Snedeker Foundation (Finals #2). The top 120 after the Simmons Bank Open will qualify for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship (Finals #3), and the top 75 after the Nationwide will qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance (Finals #4).

Status and eligibility

Here are the critical cutoff points on the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Points List that determine 2025 status and eligibility.

  • Nos. 1-30 on the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Points List will earn 2025 PGA TOUR membership.
  • No. 1 on the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Points List will earn fully exempt 2025 PGA TOUR status and gain access to the 2025 U.S. Open and THE PLAYERS Championship.
  • Nos. 31-75 on the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Points List will earn fully exempt 2025 Korn Ferry Tour membership, not subject to reshuffle.
  • Nos. 76-100 on the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Points List will earn conditional 2025 Korn Ferry Tour membership, subject to reshuffle.

2024 Korn Ferry Tour Finals schedule

What's new.

  • The 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Finals will feature two new courses. The Simmons Bank Open for the Snedeker Foundation remains in the Nashville, Tennessee, area, moving from The Grove to Vanderbilt Legends Club's North Course. The Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance moves across southern Indiana from Victoria National Golf Club to French Lick Golf Resort's Pete Dye Course. (The Albertsons Boise Open presented by Chevron remains at Hillcrest Country Club, and the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship remains at the Ohio State University Golf Club's Scarlet Course.)
  • In a change from 2023, the first three Finals events will not maintain alternate lists to fill the field to the corresponding size (156, 144, 120). Fields will play short if qualified players do not compete. The 75-player Korn Ferry Tour Championship didn’t have an alternate list in 2023 and will not in 2024.

Korn Ferry Tour Finals factoids

  • Korn Ferry Tour points distribution is elevated for the Korn Ferry Tour Finals; tournament winners during the Finals receive 600 points, compared to 500 points for a standard event.
  • Tournament purse size increases from $1 million (pre-Finals) to $1.5 million for Finals events.
  • All four Korn Ferry Tour Finals events will be broadcast on Golf Channel.
  • The first three Korn Ferry Tour Finals events feature a 36-hole cut to the top 65 professionals and ties, same as a pre-Finals event. There is no cut at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance.
  • Eligibility for the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Chevron (Finals #1) is determined by a season-long points race across 22 events, culminating at the Magnit Championship in August.
  • Prior to 2023, the top 25 on the Korn Ferry Tour Regular Season Points List earned PGA TOUR cards, in addition to 25 cards via a Korn Ferry Tour Finals Points List comprised of Nos. 26-75 on the Korn Ferry Tour, Nos. 126-200 on the FedExCup, non-members and medical extensions. There is no longer a category for Korn Ferry Tour Finals access based on FedExCup positioning.
