Hailed as Mexico's answer to U2, Maná are a hugely successful rock act who have achieved countless awards and accolades, including four Grammy Awards and seven Latin Grammy Awards, making them one of the most successful Spanish-speaking rock acts.

Formed in Guadalajara, Mexico, the band came together in 1986, featuring the talents of Fher Olvero (vocals), Ulises Calleros (guitars), Juan Diego Calleros (bass) and Alex González (drums). Despite initially signing with Polygram Records, the band soon moved to Warner Music, citing creative differences prompting the move.

Their debut album, "Falta Amor," arrived in 1992, initially slow to find success until the single, "Rayando el Sol" became a hit the following year. After the release, lineup changes saw Ulises replaced by keyboardist Iván González and guitarist Cesar Lopez, before then embarking on their second effort. In 1994, "Donde Jugaran Los Niños" was unleashed, becoming a seminal record that brought Maná superstardom in the Latin-rock world. Spawning several hits, the album went on to sell over 3 million copies, prompting an international tour.

Their third effort, "En Vivo," captured the band's live energies in 1995, featuring their new guitarist, Sergio Vallin, replacing Lopez. Folowing the album "Sueños Liquidos" in 1997, Maná became global stars outside of the Spanish-speaking world, receiving airplay on MTV, as well as featuring in their "Unplugged" series in 1999.

Success could only continue for Maná, whose 2002 "Revolución de Amor" earned them a Grammy Award for 'Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album.' Their sixth studio effort, "Amar Es Combatir" went on to become the highest charting debut of a Spanish-language album on the Billboard 200 in 2007, as well as earning them another Grammy Award. It was five years before new Maná releases arrived, in the form of "Drama y Luz" in 2011, which again stormed the Billboard 200, reaching number five. Two years later, "En Toda Libertad" was released, continuing to find commercial success.

Live reviews

Multicolored strobe lights flash, the band members walk onto the smoky stage, and as the opening chords to “Rayando El Sol” begin, the audience belt out the lyrics before Fher Olvera gets the chance. Mana brings a bright, manic, infectious positive energy to the stage, and the crowd is immediately affected. Everyone is smiling, singing, and having a good time when Mana comes in concert. Just when you think it can't get any better, Alex Gonzalez smashes out an epic drum solo and the night is made.

Mana are arguably the most successful Latin rock band in the world, having won seven Latin Grammy Awards, four Grammy Awards, fourteen Billboard Latin Music Awards and five MTV Video Music Awards. Their track record itself is a demonstration of their success. They have also set records in both concert attendance and record sales, and if you listen to their music, it's not hard to see why. They produce excellent music on every one of the albums they have recorded, from Falta Amor, released in 1990, to En Toda Libertad in 2013. Their music has roots in Latin pop, pop rock, ska, and reggae.

Whether you're in the front row high fiving the band members or in the farthest seats from the stage, Mana are a must see. They pick epic song sets, using a range from their classics to their new songs and everything in between. Not only do they have awesome songs, but they bring the audience in and make them a part of the show too. If you want to listen to hours of great music and have an incredible night, go see a Mana concert.

Fher Olvera, Alex González, Sergio Vallín and Juan Calleros otherwise known as Mana are one of Mexico's most adored rock bands and their live show is equally adored by their loyal fan base. Often billed as Mexico's answer to U2, this veteran live act really knows how to put on a show for their crowds. Despite having formed almost 30 years ago, Fher and co step onto stage with the confident demeanour of a rock band half their age and enjoy the rapturous applause received by the audience.

Kicking off proceedings with an anthemic rendition of 'Oye mi amor' the crowd sing, dance and jump along in time with the latino rockers. Olvera whips them into frenzy and encourages them to rock out further to the likes of 'El dragón' which evokes massive cheers. Having scored numerous hits on both the US albums and singles chart, the audience know the band's discography well and remain engaged and enthusiastic throughout the show. They clap along during each band member's personal instrumental solo as they showcase their talents as musicians. Mana leaves the stage knowing they have successfully brought a rock party.

Mana is a hugely successful and popular Mexican rock band that have won countless awards including four of the heavily coveted Grammy awards and an incredible seven Latin Grammy awards. The band is one of the most successful Spanish speaking rock bands of all time, and certainly of modern times. Their concert hall was absolutely packed out with devoted fans, some of whom were so emotional and excited to see their heroes that they were close to tears. And there was more than a few people screaming hysterically, and this before the band had even emerged on stage! Mana have often been compared to U2, as the Spanish speaking equivalent. Judging by their live show, I could see why. Despite their ages, the band stepped on to stage looking and acting like young rock gods. They put on one hell of a show, a performance that was accompanied with flashing lights and strobes that really added to the atmosphere of the venue. The band played all their biggest hits, they had enough to play only their well known songs, which had the whole crowd screaming along.

The music was great. Expect for the remake of an already great song.

It was funny to see how most of the crowd wasn't into the remake. Sad that the band doesn't care about what the fans think.

It was also disappointing that the band had a political agenda. We all came to see a show, listen to some great music. But they couldn't just let that be.

Needles to say I will not be attending another MANA concert

Great concert...!The band is amazing live, they have great energy and interact with the crowd. By balancing their new stuff with their old stuff, they kept both new fans and old fans happy with the repertoire of the event, and make it even more intimate with the audience by performing acoustic. If you’ve never heard of Maná do it now! PS.I would love to see it again...

The concert was awesome, they are very interactive with the crowd. They had 3 different stages along the floor and played at all of them so that if you spent some good money to sit on floor you got your money's worth because they hit all the spots. Will definitely be going again, probably one of the better concerts that I've ever been to.

unfortunately we did not make it to the show. We drove 418 miles half way to Vegas our car broke down. We had to tow and get it fixed didn't make to to Vegas until 11.30pm. By that time Im sure the show was over....so wasted over $300 on a show we did not get to see. So upset about it.....

Mana had an energetic show with great sound. I had seats in the last row but could still see everything. They also had two stages set up which was a fantastic idea to allow more people to see them up close.

Convenient venue with easy parking or easy walking distance from several hotels.

Excelent show even with Fher losing his voice. People attending saved the concert singing all sings and helping Fher. Only one thing: they should stick to schedule. It is not respectful to have people waiting for more than one hour. No excuses on that

Saw them in Oct 2015 in CDMX. It was incredible! The drummer did an epic 12 min set and a couple proposed and danced onstage to Bendida la Luz. Not a dry eye in the house. Thry soumd great! I think I was the only non latino, but I was rocking out!

Maná announces 2023 US tour dates, teases new album: 'We're planning way ahead' (exclusive)

Portrait of Pamela Avila

  • Mexican rock band Maná announced they will be performing in the U.S. in 2023 as part of their México Lindo y Querido tour.
  • The band will play two dates in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum.
  • Maná drummer Alex González told USA TODAY fans can expect a new studio album from the band as well.
  • "We're planning way ahead," he said. "We're just so excited to be able to do what we love."

For  Maná , it's never too early to plan ahead. The Grammy Award-winning Mexican rock band is ending 2022 on a high note with big plans for 2023.

After nearly four decades of hits – including "Rayando el Sol," "Oye Mi Amor," "Mariposa Traicionera," "Labios Compartidos" and "Bendita Tu Luz" – the band, composed of lead vocalist Fher Olvera, 62, drummer Alex González, 53, guitarist Sergio Vallín, 50, and bass player Juan Calleros, 60, has no plans to stop performing.

USA TODAY can exclusively reveal Maná is embarking on a new North American leg of their México Lindo Y Querido tour. "Next year looks amazing and we can't wait to be back on the road,"   González says. "We haven't toured the U.S." since just before the COVID-19 shutdown.

The 19-date U.S. tour kicks off Feb. 10 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, a return to the venue where  Maná played the city's first-ever arena residency last spring  with 12 sold-out shows.

The band will play two nights in major cities including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Miami and Chicago and will conclude the tour Sept. 23 in Sacramento, California. (For a full list of tour dates go here .)

Tickets go on sale Friday.

'Our second home': Maná announces residency at The Forum in Los Angeles in 2021

Now, Maná is "bringing a little piece of México" with their new tour. "We have put very high the name of México and Guadalajara … representing our land and where we were born, and while there's health – there will be Maná for many years to come," González adds. "Si Dios quiere (God willing)."

Since its 1986 start, the band has released 11 albums, including their 1992 album "¿Dónde Jugarán Los Niños?" which became the best selling Spanish-language rock album of all time. In 2019, Maná began re-recording some of their greatest hits with Latin music acts including Christian Nodal ("Te Llore Un Rio"), Sebastián Yatra ("No Ha Parado de Llover"), Joy Huerta ("Eres Mi Religion") and Alejandro Fernández ("Mariposa Traicionera").

But there hasn't been new music for fans since 2015.

González teases the wait may almost be over. "We’re going to be working on demos for a new studio album next year," he says. "The idea is to record at the end of 2023 and to be able to release the album in 2024."

"We're planning way ahead. … We're just so excited to be able to do what we love."

Maná after receiving Latin Grammy honor in 2018:  'We vow to fight for immigrants, women's rights '

Known for their evocative lyricism and high-energy shows ("Our concerts are a big party," says González), Maná places a premium on highlighting environmental, social, political and human rights issues.

In 2018, when they became the first group to receive the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year award, they used their acceptance speech to promote a message of unity and justice during Donald Trump's presidency . "We will continue fighting for the rights of the immigrants who have made this country great in the last century," Olvera said at the time.

González says that's just "part of our philosophy and who we are as people."

He says the band learned from the best: The Beatles , The Police , U2 , Bob Marley ,  Peter Gabriel and Bruce Springsteen . "We grew up listening to amazing artists and musicians … using their platform to talk about things we’re worried about," he says. "At the end of the day, yeah, we play in a famous band but we’re also human beings and we all live on the same planet Earth."

Most recently, Maná partnered with Dr. Anthony Fauci in support of President Joe Biden's Month of Action to encourage vaccination among the Latino population in the U.S.

Artists using their platform for good: Bad Bunny debuts 'El Apagón' music video amid Hurricane Fiona, addressing Puerto Rico's gentrification

Ranchera royalty Ángela Aguilar follows 'in the footsteps of my dad' Pepe, but could also be its future

"A lot of people suffered because of the pandemic, millions of lives were lost," González says. "But we will remember them and celebrate them."

That love and respect for their fanbase is why the band continues to reach younger generations.

"People come to our shows to have a good time, it's an experience," he says, "and it's great to see how people have also passed our music from generation to generation. It's been a wild ride."

Considered the most influential Latin rock band in the world, MANÁ continues to transcend generations with their music. MANÁ - meaning positive energy in Polynesian - began in 1986 when four friends from Guadalajara, Mexico came together to fuse new rock sounds with Latin and Caribbean rhythms.

The group includes Fher Olvera as vocalist, guitarist and main composer, Alex González on drums, Sergio Vallín on lead guitar, and Juan Diego Calleros on bass. The group released their first album, Falta Amor in 1990. In 1992, they released ¿Dónde Jugarán los Niños? which sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling Spanish-language rock album of all time.

MANÁ is one of the highest selling Latin touring acts of all time. From their first show in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Palace in 1993 to their ongoing, historic residency at the Kia Forum on the Rayando El Sol Tour, MANÁ has established themselves as a powerhouse in the city. Their residency has sold over 165,000 tickets to date across 12 sold-out shows.

MANÁ has sold millions of albums around the world and has released 11 albums of original songs along with several live albums and compilations. MANÁ's many accolades additionally include their handprints on the Hollywood Rockwalk and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, making them the first Spanish-language rock band to receive that honor.

Their influence also spans beyond music. For 30 years, the Selva Negra Ecological Foundation has been the social arm of MANÁ, combining conservation and environmental rescue with social development. Throughout their career, the band has been a vocal advocate for issues impacting their fans around the globe. Most recently the band joined forces with Dr. Anthony Fauci in support of President Joe Biden's Month of Action to encourage vaccination among the US Latino population.

MANÁ has 133 Certified Gold Albums, 256 Certified Platinum albums, 4 GRAMMY Awards, 9 Latin GRAMMY Awards, 26 Billboard Latin Music Awards, 15 Premio Lo Nuestro Awards, and honors such as the 2018 Latin Billboard Lifetime Achievement Award & 2018 Latin Grammy Person of the Year Award and more recently the 2021 ICONO LATIN BILLBOARD Award.

Their current collaboration project, which began in 2019, revisits some of their greatest songs, accompanied by renowned and diverse artists.

The most recent release -"Te Llore Un Rio," featuring Christian Nodal (pop and maricheño), has been one of their most successful releases of their current duet project so far, trending in over 15 countries across North America and Latin America at the time of release. Spanish singer Pablo Alborán joined them in 2019 with "Rayando el Sol", Sebastian Yatra in "No Ha Parado de Llover,'' Joy Huerta in "Eres Mi Religion", "El Reloj Cucú" with 12-year-old Mabel, and "Mariposa Traicionera" with Regional Mexican superstar Alejandro Fernandez.

MANÁ ANUNCIA “CAMA INCENDIADA TOUR” SU GRAN ESPERADA  GIRA DE CONCIERTOS QUE LOS LLEVARÁ A TRAVÉS DE ESTADOS UNIDOS ESTE VERANO   La banda de rock en español de mayor trascendencia regresa a los Estados Unidos tras el lanzamiento de su más reciente trabajo discográfico “Cama Incendiada.”

Maná Announces Summer U.S. Concert Dates To Kick-Off The Highly-Anticipated “Cama Incendiada Tour”   “The most widely sold and heard Latin band in the world. …one of the must-see shows of [the year].” – Billboard   The World’s Leading Latin Rock Band Will Return To Arenas Across The Country Soon After The April 21st Release Of Their Eagerly-Awaited New Album  “Cama Incendiada” (The Burning Bed).   The Tour Will Begin June 10th in San Diego and stop at American Airlines Center on Sunday, July 5.   "[The first single from Cama Incendiada,] ‘Mi Verdad’ is a deeply poetic love song where personal truths are juxtaposed with eternal ones. And it doesn't matter whether or not you speak Spanish - it's all there in the grain of the singing. While the song is an enormous hit on the Latin charts (topping several simultaneously upon release), it [also] belongs on Anglo charts in contemporary country, adult contemporary and adult alternative. ‘Mi Verdad" is one of the first truly great singles of 2015. 4.5 stars” – All Music   “[Maná is] Redefining ‘Crossover’ in Latin Pop…typical this concert was not. Entire families, grandparents included, filled the arena. ..Hardly a word of English was spoken or sung from the stage. And the band was the proud record holder of the most sold-out shows in Staples Center history… Maná, with its mix of love songs and more pointed political material about immigration and the environment, has been playing sold-out concerts across the United States for decades, selling millions of records in the process. ..Maná has a mass appeal nearly unrivaled in the Latin pop world. …From Maná’s perspective, crossing over may be an anachronism. It has simply redefined what crossover means.” – New York Times, Arts Cover Story   “No need for translation that Maná came to rock …there's no denying that the Mexican quartet is the king of Spanish-language rock...the enthusiastic crowd cheered lustily, feting a long-running, barrier-smashing band”  – Fort Worth Star Telegram   “Maná is not just a band, it is a force …and there is no stopping their momentum” – KCAL-TV   With the perfect amount of smart visuals, special effects and storytelling, fans didn't get just another concert -- they took in a full-blown spectacle…most people remained standing until the house lights came on. I went into the night with high expectations -- and Maná fulfilled them; the quartet was spot-on.  – Orange County Register

Maná: photos from the billboard español cover shoot.

Exactly 30 years have passed since Maná debuted on the Billboard charts in January 1994 with Dónde Jugarán los Niños , an album of songs about love and spite, set to rock and reggae beats that revolutionized what was known as rock en español. It peaked at No. 2 on the Top Latin Albums chart. As a result of that success, Olvera bought this house, and he and the rest of Maná — drummer Alex González, guitarist Sergio Vallín and bassist Juan Calleros — hunkered down here to write the albums that would cement their position as the most successful Spanish-language rock group in the world.

“Many Maná songs were born here,” says Olvera, standing in a sunny room painted light blue with tile floors, wooden beams and long, transparent gauze curtains. Olvera, who is wearing a necklace with a silver sea turtle, his favorite animal, lived here before buying the property next door and converting both homes into this 17-room hotel that’s filled with thousands of Maná’s stories.

It’s Olvera’s first interview in years, just days before the band’s México Lindo y Querido Tour, its first in Latin America in eight years. The act will play 16 dates, starting in Asunción, Paraguay, on Feb. 16 and including five at Buenos Aires’ Movistar Arena and an appearance at Chile’s Viña del Mar Festival. Maná will then headline the Bottlerock Festival in Napa Valley alongside Pearl Jam, Stevie Nicks and Ed Sheeran before continuing to Spain for 11 additional dates and its first-ever London concert, at the OVO Arena.

“For me, it is a dream to play in London,” says Olvera. “Since I was a teenager, I saw The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and said, ‘Wow.’ ”

What was admiration is now, in a way, understanding. Like The Rolling Stones in the English-language market, Maná has kept its integrity and its production quality, and its live touring schedule has remained active through the decades. In 2023, the quartet played more than 55 concerts, including 16 as part of its residency at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum, where it sold over 220,000 tickets, according to promoter Live Nation. (Maná does not report its sales numbers to Billboard Boxscore — a decision based on its philosophy of valuing the artistic over the monetary.)

“It feels incredible that the band remains relevant after so many decades,” González says. “Because the songs are so good, both lyrics and music. And also, because of the way Maná plays live. And third, and most important, is that our music has been handed from family to family, from grandparents to brothers to parents and children.”

When it comes to staying power as a live act, “Maná’s connection and reach is undeniable,” Live Nation senior vp of global touring Jared Braverman says. “The band’s total commitment to their music, their stories and their passions have meant that they reach many generations and have an influence that never passes.”

In terms of recordings, Maná is the rock group with the most entries (33) and No. 1s (10) on the Hot Latin Songs chart, with the most albums (15) and No. 1s (eight) on Top Latin Albums and is the Latin band, of any genre, with the most No. 1s (eight) on Latin Pop Albums .

“They’re an iconic band,” says Warner Music Latin America president Alejandro Duque. “We’ve fallen in love, mended our broken hearts and celebrated our Latin culture with them. There is no other band like them. They’ve put Latin American music at the highest level on a global scale.”

Last November, the group achieved its first Regional Mexican Airplay No. 1 with its new version of 2011’s “Amor Clandestino,” alongside Edén Muñoz. The song will be part of a currently untitled covers album of Maná’s greatest hits reimagined as duets with Mexican influence. The collection will finally arrive later this year; the band has been releasing singles from it (including “Rayando el Sol,” with Pablo Alborán, and “Te lloré un Río,” with Christian Nodal) since 2019.

His attitude reflects the ethos of Maná and its other three members, who remain united “like little brothers.”

Olvera spoke to Billboard Español about what’s next for Maná, the secret of its success and what he really thinks about reggaetón and the new wave of regional Mexican music.

This is exactly where you wrote or were inspired to write some of your most iconic songs, like “En el Muelle de San Blás.”

There’s a very interesting story in this room. We went to party at one of those dives where you stay out really late. We finished like at seven in the morning, and like good Mexicans, went to kill our hangover at a taco stand. I was with my buddies, and one of them says, “See that woman over there? They call her ‘the crazy woman from the pier’ because every Sunday, she dresses in white to wait for her betrothed. So I went up to her and asked, “Why do you go to the pier?” “To wait for my boyfriend, my betrothed.” “Where is he coming from?” “From the north. By boat.” “And when is he getting here?” “Tomorrow. He hasn’t come in many years, but he’ll come tomorrow.” Then she ignored me and left.

What other stories does this room keep?

Tons. If this bed could talk… Once I was with a girlfriend. We were already with the candles and everything, romantic, and — I swear it’s true — this is a tile roof, and something fell through the tiles and started to move. It was a snake. We’re like, “Aaahhhhh!,” and took off running. A snake expert had to come and take it out.

What moment are you at in life right now?

A great moment. I feel very whole. My voice is whole. Emotionally, I suffered a little crisis, I had a little depression. I had many blows in a row after my father died when I was little; then another sister died, about 20 years ago; then my mother and my sister both died in 2010. I found myself almost alone with my [last] sister. There were six of us, and now there’s two. So I did get a little freaked out.

On top of that, I had some complicated relationships, and we did not have good management. But thank heaven, I’m pretty well now. I’m no longer medicated, and I just have to worry about continuing to meditate, not getting too stressed and trusting the new management we have with Jason Garner and my sister, Lourdes. They’re like a Ferrari.

Maná was always a band that sang only in Spanish. Now that music in Spanish is global, do you feel vindicated in some way?

A band that stays together over 30 years is almost a miracle. What’s your secret?

One, we’re still very good friends, which is very difficult. It’s like a marriage, and we are truly like brothers. And second, we haven’t fallen into the clutches of drugs, alcohol, ego, which happens to many artists. It’s hard for one person to take on so much adulation. It’s very complicated.

How did you handle those challenges? Is that something you strategized as a band?

No. Otherwise, everyone would do that. I think we’ve been blessed because we’re people who love music, love what we do and truly give our all to fans. On the other hand, the rise of Maná was slow, and we were able to understand what was going on, and we didn’t go from one day a one-star hotel to another in a five-star hotel and a private plane. No. It was little by little, and we’re still very down to earth. I can tell you Sergio sometimes comes by bus because there are no flights. I just went to see U2 in Las Vegas, and I flew commercial. We’re pretty normal.

In fact, people may not be aware that you cap the price of your tickets.

Yes, it’s one of the things we like to do. We want everyone to have accessible ticket prices. We have tickets from $35 … Now, if you want to smuggle a little bottle of something, it’s up to you.

In all these years, what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?

How do you control your ego?

I personally meditate and say, “OK, Fher, what have you done wrong? I haven’t been too tough on so-and-so. You need to relax and let people do their jobs,” because I’m a perfectionist and I want to do everything. We can’t be saying we’re the most important rock en español band; all those things are … a bother. We truly only want to feel that we’re musicians, and that’s what we have to give.

Maná could live on its catalog and never tour again. Why do you do it?

We still love going onstage. We go out as if Mexico or any other country was playing the World Cup against another team. Every concert, we give it our everything. Everything, everything, everything. We don’t hold back anything. To this day, when I’m waiting for the curtain to open, I’ll tell Sergio, “Feel my heart. It’s going tuck-tuck-tuck.” And Maná is a band that really likes to connect with their fans. Our fans are the fifth bandmember.

This is the first time you’re playing Latin America in eight years.

And we’re also returning to Spain. For the production, we hired people from Belgium, Argentina, Mexico, the U.S., so they could create a fun, beautiful production in which music is the most important element. We really enjoy the island — the set we put in the middle of the audience. That makes things a little more democratic for people who don’t have enough money to buy expensive tickets.

Why is the tour called México Lindo y Querido?

They are all evocative lyrics. You have said in other interviews that you are not a fan of reggaetón lyrics.

They’re very violent and very repetitive lyrics and sometimes even lack respect for women. That’s my feeling. I think you are running out of literary resources if you resort to that type of lyrics to be able to release your song. I respect the genre a lot, but the lyrics are not lyrics that appeal to me. Most of them are quite empty, quite simplistic, and it doesn’t look like real work was put into them. That’s my point of view. There are some better lyrics in reggaetón, but I think most are pretty poor. I don’t know if many years from now these songs will still be heard. Probably not, because they lack literary strength.

I think there has been a lot of pressure from the industry itself for artists to release a lot of music and very quickly. But I feel like right now we’re going in the direction of more melodic and crafted songs. Do you feel that way?

I think there is a point where people are going to get tired. But hey, musical taste is up to each person. Sometimes I say, “Well, it’s great that there is reggaetón and that Maná sounds different. Now, whether I like it or like it enough to dance to…” The one I definitely can’t listen to much is Bad Bunny — and I really respect him! ( Smiles good-naturedly .) He has reached places no other Latin artist has, and that has merit, on the one hand. But that doesn’t mean you have to like it. It’s great to have everyone do well, but we need to change that trend. If you write a letter to a girl, you’re not going to put that stuff in there. Where’s the romance for women? Or for men, for that matter?

That’s interesting. For example, the way the guitars and bass intertwine, everything is very well done. And suddenly they switch from four-four to three-four [time]. They’re creative. I don’t like the lyrics very much either. Our country is already violent enough. But we go back to the same thing: I see them as authentic; they’re doing something from the heart. And there are good things in the music, in the guitarrón arrangements. There are very talented people.

Do you see Maná as a Mexican rock band? Or simply a rock band?

Along those lines. A Mexican rock band, rock pop band or whatever you want to call it. There are many fusions. Alex is Cuban, and Maná is like mestizo music. Last Saturday, I went to see Carlos Santana, and it’s the same thing. Many say, “It’s not rock,” or “Yes, it’s rock.” At one point, some bands were looking down their noses at us, saying we weren’t rock. It really bothered Alex.

Did it bother you?

The answer I gave at a press conference was, “You’re right. We’re not a rock band.” If we were, we wouldn’t have made “Mariposa Traicionera” or “Te lloré un Río.” We’re more than a rock band because we broke down the walls of rock’n’roll and went further. This whole discussion of rock, no rock is pure blah-blah-blah. Pure bullsh-t. It’s music. And in the end, Alex also said, “OK. Yes.”

México Lindo y Querido is a big tour. How hard is it to travel with it?

You’ve spoken for years about migrant rights, and during the U.S. leg of the tour, you donated to many immigrant organizations. What’s your position?

More than a political position, it’s a humanitarian position. When we spent time with [President Barack] Obama at the White House, we weren’t supporting Democrats. We were supporting the people who work, who put food on the table for Americans. And Obama understood that perfectly. We’re not with Democrats or Republicans. We’re for the people. For human rights. The United States benefits from Mexican workers.

We’re in Puerto Vallarta, which has a strong connection to your environmental foundation, Selva Negra, which you created back in 1996. The beaches where you hatch the sea turtles Selva Negra is so famous for are close by.

They’re toward Nayarit, on a large beach called Platanitos. The government has a reserve that is untouchable, and we partner with them to take care of the turtles in a very large area. In Platanitos, we have a conservation station where the biologists and people who take care of the turtles are. Last year, we released almost a million baby turtles into the sea, a record. We’ve been doing this since ’96, so there are many of my daughters in the sea. And we also have a nursery in Jalisco, where we plant trees and sell them to the government, which pays us very little, but we come out even. We’ve planted hundreds of thousands of trees.

Do you feel that now more than ever artists have social responsibility?

Is it exciting for you to see a new generation of artists, like Christian Nodal and Edén Muñoz, sing your songs, as they’re doing on your duet album?

They’re paying homage to Maná’s songs even though they weren’t even born when the songs were made. There is “Eres Mi Religión,” with Joy [Huerta]; “Rayando el Sol” was beautiful with Pablo Alborán; “Clandestino” with Edén Muñoz is more reminiscent of Mexican music. Christian Nodal I think is a very authentic guy, a good singer who sings from the heart. And we knew that he really liked Maná. So in this album of duets, which is more focused on Mexican music, we invited him to sing “Te lloré un Río,” and the song was so beautiful because Sergio Vallín and Christian added all this Mexican instrumentation and fusion.

You’ve told me you would like to record a duet with Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Who else is on your dream collaboration list?

Last Friday, I heard U2 at the Sphere in Las Vegas, and Bono’s singing is amazing. That would be another one to tap into and see what happens. I love Bruno Mars, too. On the new album, we’re not doing many duets, just two or three. We’re writing. We’re addicted to making music.

The seed of Maná sprouted in the 80's in the Mexican city of Guadalajara, when a group of ambitious teenagers with a bongo started a band called Sombrero Verde. The band began by playing covers from the groups they admired (Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin and The Police) but eventually dared to write their own rock, which reflected their Latin roots and was written in Spanish, even before this practice became commonplace. Looking to renew their image, the band adopts the name Maná, under which they would gain international recognition. With Fher Olvera as lead singer, Juan Calleros as bassist, Alex Gonzalez as the drummer, and Sergio Vallan as guitarist. The name Maná was chosen because of the significance it has in the Polynesian language: "Positive Energy," not precisely for its biblical connotations. Nonetheless, the change did seem as though it was heaven sent, as it enabled them to reach a level of professionalism they had previously been denied.

Taylor Swift unveils 'I Can Do It With a Broken Heart' music video in London

Lights, camera, Swifties smile.

Taylor Swift unveiled her brand-new music video from "The Tortured Poets Department" as the confetti fell to the floor in London for the end of her five-night stint. Tuesday night was full of surprises. Swift brought out Florence Welch to perform a brand-new routine to "Florida!!!" and invited her friend Jack Antonoff to perform a mashup of "Death By a Thousand Cuts" and "Getaway Car."

When the singer wrapped "Karma," her dancers enveloped her in a big, group hug. She then walked to the diamond platform and disappeared into the stage. As the lights came on in Wembley Stadium, the new video showing a ton of behind-the-scenes footage of the tour played.

"I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" — or what fans abbreviate as ICDIWABH — is the second music video from her 11th era album, "The Tortured Poets Department." The first, "Fortnight" featuring Post Malone, came out the evening after the album's release.

ICDIWABH joins 'Fortnight' as second music video

The singer released behind the scenes footage of "Fortnight" on YouTube. The three-and-a-half minute video shows her awkwardly throwing a chair into a wall, explaining her thought process for certain shots and directing Post Malone, who is overjoyed when he figures out how to use a typewriter.

"Yes ma'am," Post replies to her multiple times.

Swift has a two-month break before returning to North America on Oct. 18.
