Wrestling Travel take British WWE fans on the Road to WrestleMania

UK fans created an incredible atmosphere at the Royal Rumble and next time you could be there too

  • Updated 22:48, 27 Jan 2020

British fans are renowned for bringing a special atmosphere to WWE events and last night's Royal Rumble was no different.

The crowd at the Minute Maid Park stadium in Houston, Texas went wild when legendary superstar Edge returned to action .

And dedicated supporters from these shores certainly made their voices heard when Scotland's Drew McIntyre won the main event.

Many made the trip thanks to Wrestling Travel - a trailblazing company and the first of its kind in the UK, which is now making a global impact.

Wrestling Travel creates bespoke packages to WWE's biggest shows, including the annual extravaganzas WrestleMania and SummerSlam.

The company also offers dream trips to All Elite Wrestling pay-per-views and New Japan Pro Wrestling's yearly supershow, Wrestle Kingdom .

Mirror WWE has now teamed up with Wrestling Travel to boost our coverage of sports entertainment and bring you even more world exclusives.

The business is the brainchild of grappling superfan and Tranmere Rovers Associate Director, Lee McAteer , a travel industry expert and founder of the acclaimed AmeriCamp.

Wrestling Travel organises everything from flights, transfers and hotels to event tickets, but that's only half of the experience it provides.

Lee said: "Wrestling Travel is for the fans, by the fans, plus you just never know will show up and be on a WT trip travelling with us.

"At Wrestle Kingdom in January we had top wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer host a Q&A and for our Wrestling Travel WrestleManiaTravel Packages in Tampa we will have a whole host of surprise guests, who will be showing up across the week.

"In fact our VIPs may even end up watching the shows with some of them too!

"What WT does is offer a service in which all you have to do is turn up and we take care of the rest.

"At the last WrestleMania in New York we were staying in the same hotel as The Undertaker and NWA Champion Nick Aldis, so you are very much immersed in the Road to WrestleMania with Wrestling Travel."

Lee is the man behind Invasion Camp Group, a mix of summer camp, gap year and tour companies, including Camp Thailand, Camp Bali, AmeriCamp Canada and Camp.co.uk .

Wrestling Travel, which is a member of ABTA and ATOL through his parent company Invasion, aims to remove the stress and hassle around a trip to see wrestling superstars in action.

Its stunning package for WrestleMania 36 in Florida this April includes tickets for the WWE Hall of Fame, SmackDown, NXT TakeOver, WrestleMania itself and Raw.

Wrestling Travel has also become a major player behind the scenes in the industry.

The company is an official sponsor of America's Impact Wrestling , Liverpool's TNT Wrestling and an official travel partner of London's Progress Wrestling.

It sponsored Conrad Thompson's groundbreaking fan convention StarrCast and has worked with Cody Rhodes to take fans to AEW shows in America.

Lee's team lend their expertise to help facilitate as a sponsor the largest European wrestling convention, For The Love of Wrestling, with Andy Kleek at Monopoly Events.

And they have set up a ticketing platform, WT Live, as part of their commitment to support British wrestling and our thriving independent scene.

Wrestling Travel has also forged a relationship with Jeff Jarrett , which even led to the WWE Hall of Famer becoming an honorary fan of Tranmere Rovers, where Wirral-born businessman Lee is an associate director.

He said: "Jeff came down to Prenton Park and played football with the kids in the Tranmere Rovers Recreation Centre, before taking some penalties on the pitch!

"It was a really special moment for the club and I was so thankful to Jeff for coming down. He keeps a look out for the scores and where we are in the league."

Earlier this month, Wrestling Travel flew fans out to Tokyo to see the likes of Chris Jericho, Will Ospreay and Kazuchika Okada in action for NJPW .

Staying close to the iconic Tokyo Dome, guests toured sights including Mount Fuji, ate at the legendary Ribera Steakhouse, met NJPW talents, and had the chance to quiz Meltzer at the famous Toudoukan Wrestling Shop.

Wrestling Travel's Wrestle Kingdom 15 Travel Package for next January is on sale now and people can secure their places for just £99 / $150 per person.

Fans can also secure their place for WrestleMania 36 in Tampa, Florida this April.

As we're 70 days away from the Showcase of the Immortals, you can still get your Wrestling Travel WrestleManiaTravel Package .

You can choose to pay upfront, or split the payment, with the first half paid now, and the second half paid off by the end of February.

Booking in advance means you can budget your payments with a flexible payment plan.

For further information, please visit the Wrestling Travel website or contact the company at [email protected] or on 0161 806 1444.

From flight to fight! How a wrestling superfan launched specialist WWE travel firm turning over £500k a year

Like many good business ideas, Lee McAteer's company was borne out of a need that no one else appeared to cater for.

In this particular case, he found it difficult to grapple with affordable flight and accommodation packages to attend wrestling events across the world.

But instead of despairing that he could not watch his favourite sport the way he wanted, he channeled his inner Hulk Hogan and created a business out of it - discovering in the process that there were thousands out there who also sought such travel packages and experiences.

Now he enjoys a slice of the billion-dollar World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) pie after launching the Wrestling Travel company which creates bespoke packages to the world's best wrestling events.

Lee, 33, relays how he's turned his lifelong passion into a booming business in just a few months.

He told This is Money: 'As a huge fan of WWE and professional wrestling, I put myself in the shoes of the consumer as I am one

'I knew there was a gap in the market for it as it was something I wanted myself as a huge fan. We now have over 100 people on a waiting list for WrestleMania packages, which is crazy.

'Having been to the last four WrestleManias, I always ended up buying everything late and struggled for accommodation at a reasonable price and therefore, the experience always cost me a lot more than it should have.'

While his travel company targets a specific audience Lee points out that it is estimated that the combined following across WWE is almost a billion dollars.

'It's quite substantial for something so niche.

'Each year WrestleMania has around 100,000 that attend the event – although it varies from venue to venue.

'It's a very popular event that attracts nationalities from all over the world.'

Lee, who has been a wrestling fan since he was a child growing up in Wirral, started the business with just £500 which he put towards marketing.

It was launched at the end of 2017 and just 20 months later it boasts a turnover of £500,000.

Now the business showcases big events where wrestling fans travelling to events can expect to pay an average of £2,699 per person for the entire experience.

Payment plans are available to those who don't have such a lump sum available and want to pay off the trip in monthly increments.

A typical package includes flights, tickets to the wrestling match and minimum three-star hotel accommodation, with five-star stays also organised upon request.

He also differentiated the business by going beyond just offering accommodation and flights.

Packages can also include 'eat and greet' events where fans get to dine with their favourite wrestling stars such as Jeff Jarrett and Flip Gordon.

Lee explains: 'We like to think we are good value for money but at the same time we know what wrestling fans need.

'We also have reps on the ground that will make it almost like a VIP experience.

'In New York, for example, there will be five different shows that the fans will go to.'

Customers of Wrestling Travel can generally expect to be put on British Airways and American Airways flights but, where possible, the company tries to accommodate preferences.

Wrestling Travel's success can also be put down to the fact that it's created a community for wrestling fans.

Lee says: 'What we try and do is get everyone on the same flights so that there is more community feel. We fly mainly from Manchester, London and Dublin.

'But we have flights from New Zealand, Australia and Spain - it's definitely become international.'

Discounted deals for groups as well as custom deals can be arranged, but Lee admits there's demand from many honeymoon couples as well.

He said: 'We've had a lot of honeymoon couples believe it or not. We've done a lot of cool things for honeymoon couples but if I told my girlfriend I'd be dumped, but a lot of people do it.'

Singles are catered for as well. Lee explains: 'We host events so that people can get to know each other.

'There's lots of single people that want to go to these events.

'When you look at our tickets, hotel packages it becomes a community play where people find a sense of belonging rather than them coming on their own.

'They become completely immersed into the wrestling culturally.'

Wrestling Travel has also catered to those who've wanted to extend the trip as part of a holiday and included extra tourist excursions.

Lee says: 'It's not something we openly advertise but we try and work out what they want to do and instead of pigeonhole them we try and cater to them.'

This isn't Lee's first venture into entrepreneurship. He currently owns and manages 30 brands that forms part of his Invasion Camp Group, which is a mix of summer camp, gap year and tour companies aimed at British millennials. It turned over £5million in 2018.

He is also associate director of Tranmere Rovers Football Club.

His next plans are to cater for Mixed Martial Arts fans. 'We are now looking to launch in MMA side of the operation in April 2019 as there is demand for that too.'

When asked for advice for other would-be entrepreneurs Lee says it's all about doing what you enjoy.

He adds: 'The way I see it is if you love what you do then you never work a day in your life so combining hobbies and passions into a business is never a bad thing.'

‘I was a barrister – now I’m a champion gravy wrestler’

Joel hicks, 45, takes stock of his litany of record-breaking titles with maira butt , including wife carrying and clog cobbing, and how a fun day out bog snorkelling changed his life forever, article bookmarked.

Gravy danger: Joel Hicks with his Guinness World Record

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more

I ’m the Guinness Book of World Records holder for most male wins in the World Gravy Wrestling Championship . I’ve won six times and hold the title of the most consecutive wins in a row. It’s just one of quite a number of dubious world titles I hold.

I’m also the five-time winner of the Bird Man, a competition where you build a flying machine and soar off a pier, and I’m a former World Clog Cobbing Champion – that involves throwing old boots really far. I’m a World Egg Throwing Champion, and I hold the wife-carrying record, for carrying the heaviest wife in Wife Carrying history . I’m also the only man to have competed carrying two wives at a time.

People always ask, how did I get into all of this?

Back in 2006, I went to the World Bog Snorkelling Championship in Wales for a fun day out and to raise a bit of money for charity in the process. I had a great time and the people there made me feel very welcome. I decided to do a few events a year. One day I saw an advert online for gravy wrestling and thought, “This could be fun”. So I drove up to a supermarket car park in Wigan to roll about in gravy with six other people while confused shoppers walked past and threw a few coppers into the bin for us.

At the time I won my first gravy wrestling championship, I was training as a barrister (I have degrees in both biochemistry and law). I was called to the bar in 2009, and I had to make a decision about whether to stay in the law – which would have taken over my life – or follow my passion. I made a choice to follow my passion.

I eventually set up Always With a Smile , a foundation to raise money for local charities through a plethora of outrageous, very British and very eccentric events. Gravy wrestling is the epitome of a traditional community event, and those are sadly disappearing from the landscape these days. We do between 35 to 75 events a year. None of us take a wage, including me.

We use about 2,000 gallons of gravy for each match. It’s actually hot. I don’t have a favourite flavour, but one time we had an issue when someone decided to use onion gravy and it got into all of our eyes and left us in tears

We don’t design the events – they’re associated with the region they’re in. It’s about taking local traditions and that heritage and trying to raise money with it. For example, gravy wrestling is specific to Lancashire – sausages, hotpots, it’s what they do – and we raise £4,500 every year for East Lancashire Hospice.

Gravy isn’t a normal part of my diet, so I can still stomach it. We use about 2,000 gallons of the stuff. A lot of people don’t know this but the gravy we wrestle in is actually hot. I don’t have a favourite flavour, but one time we had an issue when someone decided to use onion gravy and it got into all of our eyes and left us in tears.

Overall, what started out as just me has morphed into something huge. People travel all over the country to visit our events. I’ve since got into modelling, acting and photography. I landed my first commercial after a photographer spotted me doing an event. I was a fireman in a Harpic ad, which ran for four years. I was in the film The Northman and I play a guy called Hot Slippy Jesus on an ITV show called Apocalypse Wow . I’ve just got back from Belgium doing a commercial.

‘All of these competitions have, though, taken a toll on my body’

People ask me: well, why does all of this matter? When you see what the power of a smile can do, it’s very rewarding. You should see the look in a kid’s eyes when he pins you in the gravy or knocks you out. At 14 or 15, he’ll remember that and he’ll maybe think of passing that feeling on. Hopefully, it helps the next generation of people to make a small difference.

All of these competitions have, though, taken a toll on my body. Since I started the foundation, I’ve had both my ankles and both my shoulders operated on. I’ve had surgery on my hip and three stomach surgeries. I’ve put my body through hell. It’s very intense. But I don’t regret any of it. I had to take this year off gravy wrestling because of my third stomach surgery, but I’m quite keen to get back.

My friends and family accept it now and I’ve been recognised locally in my town – Hinckley in Leicester – as well as nationally with the Pride of Britain and British Citizen Awards and being invited to Downing Street. It’s all great and nice to be recognised in some way, but I would swap that all to see the expression on someone’s face who we’ve helped out.

Wrestling Travel exceed all expectations with inaugural New Japan Wrestle Kingdom trip to break new ground

  • By Alex McCarthy
  • Published : 12:20, 6 Feb 2020

Wrestling is going from strength to strength here in the UK with WWE's new TV deals speaking volumes for the wrestling boom.

They have programming on BT Sport and Channel 5 while AEW also has a hand in the terrestrial TV market with ITV.

NXT UK has grown exponentially over the past 12 months and even British independents like Progress, Rev Pro, ICW, TNT and OTT continue to thrive.

Wrestling Travel founder Lee McAteer and the legendary Chris Jericho

One company that seems to marry promotions like those together with the fans - and more - is Wrestling Travel .

We did a profile piece on these game-changers last year where we spoke to founder and owner Lee McAteer. You can read that HERE .

But even since then, they've stepped up their game. In January,  Wrestling Travel put on their first-ever travel package to Tokyo, Japan for NJPW's Wrestle  Kingdom.

They outsold their target by 50 percent and had passengers from all over the UK, USA and even France.

Danny Wolstanholme, Operations Manager at WT, who was instrumental in putting together the trip. "I was really proud of the trip. After months of planning, it was fantastic to see it all come together and see all of our travellers having such an amazing time. There was a lot of late nights putting everything together to make this the best trip it could possibly be, and the feedback we've had has been heartwarming, and has really given us enormous confidence heading into next year's trip."

Travellers were able to purchase add-ons such as Pro- Wrestling NOAH & New Year Dash (like the RAW after WrestleMania) as part of their package, and they their two hotels were based just around the corner from the Tokyo Dome, continuing Wrestling Travel's reputation as a provider than can make what you want a reality.

Their aim is to double the amount of travellers next year and their Wrestle  Kingdom 15  Travel Package went on sale on January 17, so check it out HERE .

Danny continued: "Travellers were able to visit places like Ribera Steakhouse with us, and were even given the opportunity to purchase a Ribera jacket by the owners!

"Our travellers were also treated to special guest appearances from guys like Kevin Kelly, Fat Ass Massa, Lance Archer, Minoru Suzuki & Toru Yano along the way, who our travellers were able to spend time with. This was all part of the Wrestling   Travel experience that you wouldn't get anywhere else"

By chance, they also ended up adding a Dave Meltzer Q&A in Tokyo, at the famous Toudoukan  Wrestling Shop to their itinerary.

The legendary wrestling journalist reached out to  Wrestling   Travel in November looking to use their services to take him and his family to Tokyo for Wrestle Kingdom and that's when a deal was struck to promote Wrestling Travel in the Wrestling Observer and put on a unique show for the fans.

Dave Meltzer doing his show with Wrestling Travel in Japan

Around 60 people attended the exclusive event from all around the world, with tickets being purchased on their very own ticketing platform WT Live (I know - it's THAT comprehensive), and on the door on the day of the event. Dave was assisted on stage with the Q&A's by Japan's own Fumi Saito. The company considers the event a real success and are looking to do the same thing next year, but this time with a Japanese translator to encourage the hometown fans to attend.

"Overall it was an incredible experience," Danny said. "Not just for the team, but for all of our customers who have given us nothing but positive feedback about the way the trip was organised and how they had such a wonderful experience. The only gripe everyone had was that they wish they could have stayed longer! Next year, we are looking to extend the duration of the travel  package taking that feedback on board."

Wrestling Travel has recently struck deals with The Mirror here in the UK, IMPACT Wrestling, Progress, For the Love of Wrestling, Starrcast and have been supporting TNT Extreme Wrestling shows in the Liverpool area, too.

They've made a commitment to wrestling as whole and especially from a grass roots level. Not just WWE - although they can take you to their biggest shows - but all wrestling. The proof is in their actions and the deals they have made. The traffic Wrestling Travel are generating continues to rise and that helps independent promotions gain more mainstream attention. That actually helps these promotions sell tickets through WT Live or other platforms.

Wrestling Travel set up in Japan

But, it's to their consumers, too. For example: A couple on Japan trip were celebrating their honeymoon, and the husband was gifted a worn Jushin Thunder Liger mask worth $600 as a gift. The mask was made by the original mask maker. I mean, it kind of makes me want to get married.

Wrestling Travel founder Lee McAteer plans to use the momentum the company has generated over the past year or so - especially from Japan - and use that to make an unforgettable trip to WrestleMania 36, Wrestling Travel's biggest trip yet. "We're absolutely delighted with how the Wrestle Kingdom trip went and, more importantly, the experience we were able to put on for our travellers. I am blessed to have such a wonderful team that always go the extra mile for our customers.

"At the end of the day Wrestling Travel is by fans for fans so we know what we want and what to give to fans. To see the incredible traffic and media attention we are now receiving is very humbling, but our customers will always be our main priority and I want WT to help all levels of wrestling, whether that be on a local, national or global level. We learn something from every trip and we're focused on making WrestleMania 36 an unforgettable experience for those that come with us. We have come a long way from our first ever trip. "It's not just a flight and a hotel, we've got well known wrestling personalities and mystery guests who will be spending the weekend with them! We're working on many other surprises that make us totally unique and we try and top ourselves every time. That's where the fans win."

Wrestling Travel inside the Tokyo Dome

Joe Baiamonte, head of marketing and creative at WT, says: "The sheer scale of Mania week allows us to get a lot more creative with our offerings because there’s so much going on. Whether you’re just after Mania itself or all the WWE events around it, plus a ton of add ons such as pre-show parties or special guest appearances , we’re going to take care of it for you.

“We’re aware that these sorts of trips are bucket list moments for most fans, so we want to make them as memorable as possible. I  honestly can’t wait for our community to experience this ‘Mania trip. It’s taking everything we’ve done before to the next level.”

Wrestling Travel have forced their way into the wrestling industry and have done it exactly the right way. This bridge between any company or event in the world is something any real fan will take the time to explore.

If you are travelling and want the peace of mind of being insured, be aware that any medical conditions may affect this.

If you have certain medical issues, many insurers will not cover you for claims related to those conditions or would charge you so much that cover is unaffordable.

If you have had advice or treatment for any of the following conditions, standard travel insurance may not cover you:

  • Heart conditions (including high blood pressure and high cholesterol)
  • Breathing conditions (including asthma)
  • Joint and bone inflammation
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Chronic illnesses (including cancer)

The bigger travel insurers that can be found on price comparison websites may not be able to provide affordable cover, though it is always worth checking.

We are committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability.

Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs.

Please Note: Accessible Seating can not be guaranteed by Wrestling Travel, wherever possible we will strive to support your Accessible Request.

If you’re thinking about taking your little ones with you, here’s some information to take into account. There are sometimes age restrictions that won’t allow children under a certain age into an event, so please check this before buying a Travel Package containing Live Event Tickets. Unless we specifically say otherwise, your children will need their own ticket, even if they’ll be sitting on your knee.

  • Children aged 0-18 months: Very few shows, if any, are aimed at this age group.
  • 18 month – 5 years: We wouldn’t recommend taking children this young, but unless there’s a specific age restriction set by the venue or event organisers, this is completely up to you.
  • 5 years and over: It’s important to remember that a live show might be very different from what you see on TV.

So even if your little ones like the TV show, the live act might not be appropriate. Noise levels may also not be suitable for young children.

Please remember if your children aren’t used to this type of atmosphere, it may not be an enjoyable experience for them.

Each Travel Package will contain the main traveller that will be the primary contact for the group. As the main traveller, you represent that you have the legal authority and capacity to enter into the Agreement and that you are age 18 or older. Anyone under that age will need a Parent or Guardian to accompany them during the trip.
