Who needs a mower? Stadium High School enlists goats as temporary landscapers

by Denise Whitaker & Chelsea Hylton, KOMO News Staff

Tacoma Public Schools has employed a group of goats to help clear out overgrown vegetation around campus. (Photo: Tacoma Public Schools)

TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma Public Schools hired a herd of goats as the new landscapers on campus at Stadium High School.

A social media post from TPS about the team of goats munching overgrown vegetation above the school’s famed football stadium is now drawing crowds of people to come see it.

"This is great! Love seeing them out here eating up this vegetation," Misti Chant told KOMO News.

"It’s been about 10, 10 or 15 years since someone’s been on this hillside, as far as managing the brush.," James Neil, Athletic Director for Tacoma Public Schools told KOMO News. He said the brush was up to 12 feet, so somebody could stand at the fence above the bowl and not even seethe stadium below.

"You can see you can see the stadium again," Neil said.

So what all will they eat? Don’t goats eat everything?

“No, no that’s a common misconception. They are browsing animals so how I like to describe it when we eat steak, we eat the meat we leave the bones goats are going to do the same thing,” said Eric Billings, owner of Evergreen Goat Rentals.

So, how much can a goat eat in a day?

“So, they eat about roughly 3% of their bodyweight. Your average goat, the way I like to say it, can eat about 3 ft. or about a lawnmower bag a day to put it in perspective,” explained Billings.

This is exactly one of the reasons Tacoma Public Schools chose goats as their new grounds keepers.

“Ultimately, they’ll, they’ll keep the brush down and we don’t have to bring trucks or trailers,” James Neil, Athletic Director for Tacoma Public Schools told KOMO.

“This is probably gonna be my biggest (job) to date, the nastiest terrain. And it is, I mean there’s so much in here. It’s a lot. It’s incredibly steep and nasty,” said Billings.

Billings told KOMO News that he’s been renting goats for about a year and half.

So, how did he get into this business?

“I randomly met a guy who was doing it for a long time, and I worked with him for about three or four years and learned everything,” said Billings.

He then decided to start his own goat-renting company, and right now, he’s got about 65-70 goats.

He also told KOMO News that he grew up in an agricultural family. His mom is from Nebraska, where the family has 3,000 acres. His mom and dad help him at times, and he hires friends when he needs an extra crew. For this job in Tacoma, Billings thinks he brought about 50 goats.

“When I’m loading them, it’s quite the process. Sometimes you get goats that don’t want to load. So generally speaking, if they’re gonna give me a hard time, I just get who I can in,” said Billings.

For this job, the goats are on a timeline to finish before school starts on Sept. 9.

He did have Melissa Walton helping him the day KOMO News visited.

They were both using power tools to cut trails through the blackberries and thick areas to give the goats easy access.

“It’s been about 10, 10 or 15 years since someone’s done this on this hillside as far as managing the brush,” said Neil.

Throughout our visit with Billings and his goats, KOMO News learned that Billings names all of his goats. We met Vincent van Goat, Betty, John, Paul, Petunia, and her baby, plus Snowflake.

“Oh, I love her, and she loves me,” said Billings. He admitted that he sometimes forgets the younger one’s names, but once he’s around them long enough, he remembers.

“Some have different personalities. Some are super friendly, and they want your attention all the time. There’s a goat named Buster, and he’ll just crawl in your lap,” said Billings.

“It’s a unique experience for a community to have animals on site doing a job for us,” said Neil.

Dozens of people stood along the fence throughout the day, taking pictures and cooing at the goats. Which, by the way, does not phase them. The goats just keep munching away, unaware of the stares they’re getting.

“We ask that you stay baaa-ck,” their post said. “Who needs lawnmowers when you've got these eco-friendly eating machines on the job?”

The goats will be at the school over the next two weeks. TPS asks that people make sure to give the goats plenty of space to work and not bother them.

The biggest football stadium in the world, set for 2030 World Cup

The World Cup final could take place on African soil for only the second time in history when Morocco co-host the 2030 tournament

Stade Hassan II

Morocco is planning to build the biggest football stadium on the planet in a daring bid to potentially host the 2030 World Cup final.

Images have been released of the proposed site – known as the Grand Stade Hassan II - in the city of Benslimane, around 40 kilometres from Casablanca.

Remarkably the stadium is set to have a capacity of 115,000, which would make it the largest football stadium in the world.

VIDEO: We Went To America's Craziest Derby

The North African country is co-hosting the 2030 tournament with Spain and Portugal while Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will host the first three games of the competition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the finals.

Initial plans are aiming for the stadium to open in 2028, two years ahead the tournament, which will mark the first time North Africa has hosted World Cup finals football.

Stade Hassan II

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation will be hopeful the construction of the mammoth stadium will be enough to see them host the final, with the venue for the tournament decider yet to be officially confirmed.

The design comes from Paris-based architects Oualalou + Choi and renowned stadium construction firm Populous, who have previously built some of the most impressive sports stadiums on the planet, including the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Wembley and the Accor Stadium in Sydney.

Stade Hassan II

At 115,000 the Hassan II Stadium would dwarf other stadiums purpose-built for football.

The only sports stadium that would still have a larger capacity would be the Narendra Modi Stadium in India, which can house 132,000, primarily hosting cricket.

  • Conor Gallagher joins Atletico Madrid from Chelsea for €42 million
  • Chelsea expressed gratitude to Gallagher for his long-standing commitment
  • Atletico Madrid has spent around €200 million on new signings this summer

Atletico Madrid have secured the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea on a five-year deal, both clubs confirmed on Wednesday. The 24-year-old joins the LaLiga side for a reported fee of €42 million, with his contract extending until 2029.

Gallagher, who has been with Chelsea since the age of eight, was a key player for the Blues last season, starting 37 Premier League games and serving as captain for most of the campaign due to injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell. Despite being offered a new contract by Chelsea’s new manager Enzo Maresca, Gallagher opted for a move to Spain, seeking a fresh challenge in his career.

Conor Gallagher has completed a permanent transfer to Atletico Madrid. We wish Conor the very best as he begins a new chapter in his career. 💙 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) August 21, 2024

Gallagher’s senior career began with loan spells at Premier League clubs West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace before making his Chelsea debut in 2022. His consistent performances earned him a place in the England national team, where he made his debut in 2021. Gallagher now has 18 caps and was part of the England squad that reached the final of Euro 2024, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to Spain.

Atletico Madrid have been active in the transfer market this summer, spending around €200 million on new signings, including Spain defender Robin Le Normand and Norway striker Alexander Sorloth. Gallagher, along with Atletico's other new recruits, will be officially unveiled later today in an event at the Metropolitano stadium, headlined by former Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez.
