Try Lithuanian food with a Vilnius food tour

  • May 23, 2019

We finally made it to Vilnius, Lithuania! This is a destination we were so excited to see and experience. It was almost as if we knew we would love it…and spoiler alert — it turns out that we absolutely did! Since it was our first time to Lithuania, we had to get to know the local cuisine. What does that mean? Yep! We took a Lithuanian food tour in Vilnius ! * does a little dance*

I just have to say again that we both loved Vilnius so much. I can’t wait to go back. Whenever we go somewhere new, I get a little bit nervous because I don’t always click with every destination. Sometimes, it’s okay and sometimes I’m just like, “nope, can we leave now?”. Taking this Vilnius food tour really gave the introduction we needed and helped us understand the background of the city a bit and why their cuisine is the way it is.

Learning what food is popular in a place can help you live a little bit more like a local when you go out to eat on your own. Food tours are great to help with this! Not only are you shown the good and local food, but you are also shown spots that you’ll definitely want to go back to.

This tour was a complimentary tour from Vilnius Urban Adventures . We knew we wanted to explore the food world in Vilnius with Urban Adventures. After taking their tour in Krakow, we thought they would be the perfect partner to reach out to for a food tour in Vilnius. We were right 😉

Vilnius vertical

Starting the Vilnius food tour

Our meeting point couldn’t have been easier to find. The main square in Vilnius is called Cathedral Square and they tell you exactly where to meet. None of the “meet at this spot, under this sign, you’ll have to take this metro exit and if you see this place, you went too far.” Super simple. The introductions went so well that we just kept talking. Somehow our guide, Victoria, still managed to get us to our first stop.

Jess with 999

That first stop was a surprise because it was shot! Every region has their own special spirit, and that special spirit is one of our favorite things is to try everywhere we go. It’s all about the 999 here in Vilnius. Victoria mentioned all the various ways you can drink it, and when she mentioned that it goes well in a cola drink, I was on board. It was so good, we ended up buying a bottle and bringing it home with us, so we can have it anytime!

Read our things to do in Vilnius post for more inspiration for your Lithuanian trip!

Cheese in Vilnius

Our next stop was a famous cheese shop. I certainly didn’t imagine cheese when thinking about a food tour in Lithuania! Living in the Netherlands has given me a new appreciation of cheese–but I still don’t really like the stinky stuff. People seem to love the cheese in this shop though, because the whole time we were sat in this small shop, there were people constantly coming and going. The cheese they had was a delicious semi-hard (is that a thing?) cheese. Very similar to the texture you would find in the famous Dutch Gouda cheese. It does have its own flavor, of course, but the textures between the 12-, 24-, and 36-month cheese were similar to the young to old cheese I’m used to in Amsterdam.

Vilnius food tour cheese stop

The 12-month was smoother with a mild flavor and the 24-month cheese had a more prominent cheesy flavor with a tad bit of those crystals that make good cheese good. The 24-month was my favorite which surprised me because I definitely thought the 36-month would be the best. Maybe the flavor was more than I wanted? I’m not sure. But the best thing is that you get to try them all. As long as you like cheese, you’ll probably love these!

Victoria placed something on the table that got us all to stop talking (we all happened to be American, so that’s no small task). Remember, we are in a cheese shop.

She placed a small tray of lovely looking chocolates on the table. Needless to say, we were confused. I wish I could say I was less confused once she explained that they were chocolates with cheese inside, but I wasn’t. Why would you put cheese in chocolate? Not a flippin’ clue. But I was brave and tried them. They weren’t too bad. Actually, I kind of enjoyed it. But I think, for me, it’s more of a novelty that I tried them. I’ll stick with my vanilla creams, thanks.

Sean & Jess Vilnius Food Tour

A real Lithuanian meal

Our next stop was exactly what I had been hoping for. It was all so beautiful and the location could not have been more perfect. In fact, earlier in the day we took a bike tour around Vilnius, and our guide specifically told us to go to this place. Seriously, guys, everything about this trip just worked out so wonderfully!

Urban Adventures Vilnius Food Tour Cepelinai

From beet soup to cepelinai, potato pancakes to fried bread, and of course boiled potatoes, they were all spread out on the table along with three jugs of beer. The vibe of having the entire group around the table in a perfectly lively bar made this my favorite spot, which was unexpected considering our last stop was the most typically “me” place.

Urban Adventures Vilnius Food Tour fried bread

I’m really trying to figure out what I loved most, and I think I’m going to say the cepelinai. It was the most interesting and tasty. The potato pancakes I would happily eat anytime, anywhere. And the fried bread was a guilty pleasure that I’m very glad I don’t have in my everyday life or I would just be fat. I love boiled potatoes but typically eat them with a steak. For me, I can eat a beet soup, but it’s not what I want to order. That said, this one was better than the ones I’ve had before. So I actually had quite a few spoonfuls even though I had this incredible spread in front of me.

Urban Adventures Vilnius Food Tour potato pancakes

We had one more stop and I couldn’t believe it! I think we could have burst. But there was just enough room to try our final dish and some mead.

Urban Adventures Vilnius food tour Herring

A fine dining Lithuanian experience

In another lively part of Vilnius we found our last stop on our Vilnius food tour. We were a bit sad because we were enjoying each other’s company. I think the reason we all clicked so well is the others that were on our tour were from near where Sean and I are from and there was a student who knew of our college and we knew of her’s. Basically, if you didn’t go to a small college or were from the town it was in, you wouldn’t know about it. So we bonded over small colleges and what it was like to attend.

Anyway, see, I’m rambling about rambling! Our final dish was a fancy version of a herring dish. It’s a fish that doesn’t tickle everyone’s fancy, but you should definitely try it. Always try everything on the food tour unless you are allergic. That’s my general rule.

We also tried some mead. Apparently, it’s very popular in Lithuania! Who knew? If you are unfamiliar with mead, it’s basically an ancient honey wine. We tend to love it and we have a meadery near where we used to live in the United States and visit whenever we go back!

Purchase this tour as a gift with Tinggly — a gift certificate for experiences around the world.

Urban Adventures Vilnius Food Tour boiled Potatos

The variety of food on this food tour was huge! And if you like to have a little libation when you eat, then you are in luck because they love to make you happy and offer all the local drinks as well.

Sometimes I think with each food tour we take, they just get better and better. It’s always a combination of things that makes a tour great, right? This tour really had it all — Good guide, good group, good weather, good food, and good spots.

Vilnius Urban Adventures Food tour

It’s important to note that your tour could be a tad different. We’ve been on a few tours who have mentioned that depending on the day could change the tour slightly. Some places might not be open while other alternatives are, but you are still going to have a great tour! Just don’t want you to think that you went on the wrong tour if one of your stops is different from ours 🙂

We highly recommend visiting Vilnius . Is it London or Paris? Nope. And thank goodness! It’s a city with so much personality, great vibe, incredible history, and nice people. If you are worried about English being spoken, don’t. The younger generation (and even some of the older generation) speak English very well. I don’t think you’ll have a problem. And Lithuania is on the Euro, so no currency switch if you’re already in a country with the Euro.

Honestly, I think Vilnius is completely underrated because it’s such a cool and vibrant place. We’re already planning our trip back…maybe a road trip this time…

Vilnius is the small but charming capital of Lithuania. I was fortunate to spend 3 days in the city last November and had a fantastic time.

Before I came to Vilnius I wasn’t sure where to eat in Vilnius or if I would find any Lithuanian food that is suitable for vegans. However, I needn’t have worried. I was expecting Vilnius to be a fascinating city full of history, quirky street art and culture (which it is!) but what I wasn’t expecting was that the Vilnius food scene would be poppin’!

I never thought of Vilnius as a foodie destination so I was pleasantly surprised by the wide range of excellent eateries, bars and cafes on offer. Eating my way around the city quickly became my favourite activity in Vilnius!

View of Vilnius from above the city

So since I spent so much time stuffing my face, I mean “researching the Vilnius food scene” it’s only right that I share my findings with you all in today’s blog post 😉

I am vegan but many of these restaurants cater for a range of diets. Check the handy yellow boxes beneath each entry where I’ll specify if they offer vegan, veggie or meat options.

Vilnius has it all from traditional Lithuanian dishes to fully vegan restaurants and hip brunch spots! So let’s jump right in…

What to eat in vilnius.

If you’re looking for a taste of traditional Lithuanian cuisine, Vilnius is the place to be.

The Lithuanian capital is home to a wide range of excellent restaurants serving up delicious dishes that represent the country’s culinary heritage. From hearty stews and dumplings to sweet pastries and honey-based drinks, there’s something to satisfy every palate.

Lithuanian cuisine is a reflection of the country’s history and geography. Lithuanian cuisine has been influenced by a variety of cultures, including German, Russian and Polish.

Due to the cold weather , Lithuanian food tends to be quite stodgy and made for comfort and warmth; Think hearty stews and lots of carbs!

Lithuanian cuisine is also heavily reliant on local produce, which includes barley, potatoes, rye, beets, greens, berries, and mushrooms. Soups are popular in Lithuania and are considered to be very healthy… and tasty!

Saltibarsciai is usually served as an appetizer or a side dish but can also be enjoyed as a main course.

It’s very aesthetically pleasing due to its bright pink colour!

Lithuanian Black Bread

Lithuanian Black Bread is a type of bread that is popular in Lithuania.

It is made with rye and is eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is often served with butter or cheese and is great for sandwiches.

Lithuanians link many beliefs and magic with bread. Bread plays an important role in family holiday rituals and agrarian ceremonies.

Lithuanian beer snacks

Lithuanian beer snacks are a great way to enjoy some traditional Lithuanian food.

Beer snacks tend to be strips of fried bread that are commonly served alongside beer in the bars.

Lietuviskas obuoliu suris (Lithuanian Apple Cheese)

Lietuviskas obuoliu suris is a type of apple cheese that is popular in Vilnius.

Although it is confusingly called cheese, it’s not actually cheese at all! It is made entirely of apples!

Lithuanian Apple Cheese is made with a blend of apples, sugar and spices and can be enjoyed as a savoury or sweet snack.

Gira (Honey Drink)

Gira is a traditional Lithuanian honey drink made from fermented honey, water, yeast and raisins.

It is usually served as an aperitif or a digestif and is often consumed during celebrations.

Grybų Sriuba (Mushroom Soup)

Grybų Sriuba is a traditional Lithuanian mushroom soup that is made with sun-dried mushrooms and flavoured with garlic, onions and tomato paste.

It’s an incredibly tasty dish that can be enjoyed as a starter, side or main course.

Best Restaurants in Vilnius

Are you looking for Vilnius food that will tantalize your taste buds?

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has some of the most delicious restaurants in Europe! Whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner spot or a cosy place to brunch on the weekends, Vilnius’s plethora of eateries offers something to suit every palate.

I had a fantastic time eating my way around Vilnius and I’ve summarised my favourite foodie spots for you. Read on to find the best places to eat in Vilnius…

Best restaurants for Brunch in Vilnius

Vilnius is becoming increasingly cosmopolitan, especially when it comes to brunch.

The city boasts a range of hip cafes and restaurants offering up contemporary interpretations of traditional dishes. From pancakes and waffles to avocado toast and eggs benedict, Vilnius has something for everyone who loves brunch!

Who doesn’t love brunch when they are on holiday? Especially during a relaxing city break, brunch can be a real treat and Vilnius has no shortage of great Brunch options.

Below are a few of my favourite places to get brunch in Vilnius.

A hand holding a dark chocolate donut with a strawberry topping

Holy Donut was a pleasant surprise that I stumbled upon whilst looking to get out of the cold for a bit.

This hip cafe had a really trendy vibe and a warm colourful interior which was exactly what I needed on a cold November morning.

They have a vast selection of different doughnuts that you can either enjoy inside or take away.

I enjoyed a super yummy dark chocolate vegan doughnut and a coffee. But if you fancy something a bit more substantial they have a menu full of tasty brunch options such as pancakes, shakshuka, bagels, avocado toast and much more!

They even serve monster milkshakes and a variety of cocktails if you are feeling fancy.

Next time I return to Vilnius I will definitely go back to Holy Donut and sample more of their extensive menu.

Address: Vokieciu g. 9, Vilnius 01130 Lithuania

Open: 8am – 10pm

Meat, Vegetarian and Vegan options are available

Vilnius Cat Cafe

A cat at Vilnius cat cafe, Lithuania

I love cats, so obviously I couldn’t resist this place! Here you can enjoy some really great food and drinks whilst spending some quality time with the cutest furry friends.

I went because I wanted to see the cats (I was missing my own furbaby) so I didn’t have many expectations about the food. However, I was pleasantly surprised! The food was great!

They offered a mix of snacks, cakes and traditional Lithuanian food. I tried the traditional Lithuanian pancakes with mushroom sauce and washed them down with a glass of hot mulled wine.

To visit the cat cafe in Vilnius you will need to book in advance through their website as they limit the number of people allowed inside so as not to stress the kitties.

Address: Gedimino pr. 5, Vilnius 01112 Lithuania

Open: 11am – 10pm

The menu doesn’t have any specific vegan dishes but I asked and they were happy to adapt one of the veggie options for me.

Beigelistai

Bagel, hummus and salad.

Did you know that bagels were originally invented in Lithuania? That’s why you will find many bagel places all over the capital.

I was recommended to try Beigelistai by the guide from a walking tour that I took. The local guide enthusiastically declared that this was the best place for bagels in all of Vilnius, so I just had to check it out.

The cosy interior of this little cafe felt like sitting in someone’s living room which was very comforting on a cold day.

I had a hummus bagel and it really was one of the best bagels I’ve ever tasted! It was made to perfection and I would love to go back and try more of the delicious fillings that were on offer.

Address: Literatu g. 7 Hale market, Vilnius 01125 Lithuania

Open: 9am – 7pm

Chaika – Vilnius Vegan Cafe & Bakery

If you’re looking for vegan options then Vilnius is definitely the place to be!

If you’re ever in Vilnius and looking for a small cafe with a great atmosphere, be sure to check out CHAIKA .

Chaika offers delicious vegan and vegetarian food as well as gluten-free cakes and pastries.

Vilnius restaurants

Vilnius has many great restaurants with cuisines from all around the world. Here are a few of my faves and what I consider to be the best restaurants in Vilnius…

Curry and rice

I enjoyed Blue Lotus so much that I actually ate there twice!

The restaurant has a great relaxed atmosphere and the staff are friendly, helpful and don’t rush you at all.

I actually think that Blue lotus is one of the most cozy restaurants in Vilnius.

The food is a mixture of Thai and Indian dishes and both dishes that I tried were absolutely delicious.

Address: Totoriu g. 16, Vilnius 01121 Lithuania

Open: 11:30am – 11pm

No Forks Mexican grill

Hand holding burrito

This nice little Mexican place is a great option for a quick bite to eat.

No Forks Mexican serves a good selection of burritos, tacos and nachos for cheap prices and they have a great local beer on tap too.

It’s conveniently located close to the centre of the old town, just a few doors down from Holy Donut.

The portion sizes are really big so it’s a great place to fill up if you are on a budget.

I called in here on my last day in Vilnius before heading to the airport and enjoyed a delicious vegan burrito and a beer.

Address: Vokieciu g. 9, Vilnius 01130 Lithuania,

Open: 11am – 11pm

Etno Dvaras

I didn’t personally eat here but the other people staying in my hostel dorm room absolutely raved about this traditional Lithuanian restaurant so I decided to include it in this list.

Etno Dvaras is one of the best restaurants in Vilnius old town.

It specialises in serving traditional Lithuanian cuisines such as potato pancakes, stuffed potato dumplings, sausage rings, black bread and rye bread and many others. They even offer Lithuanian beer snacks, which are basically big platters of fried bread and cheese for you to nibble on whilst you drink beer.

Every time I walked past this place it was super busy so I think it’s safe to say this is the place to go if you want to experience traditional food in Vilnius.

Address: Pilies g. 16, Vilnius 01123 Lithuania

Meat, Vegetarian and Vegan options are available – although vegan options are limited to just potato pancakes and salad

Mykolo 4 is a family-run restaurant-bistro that serves Vilnius ‘bourgeois cuisine’ inspired by the pre-war gastronomy of noble citizens.

This gorgeous bistro, heavy with wooden beams and brick walls, specialized in dishes inspired by 19th-century traditional recipes.

The availability of seasonal ingredients plays a role in what is served here.

Address: Šv. Mykolo g. 4, 01124 Vilnius, Lithuania

Open: Tuesday – Saturday 12pm – 11pm

Meat, Vegetarian and Vegan options are available – although vegan options are very limited the menu changes regularly based on what is in season and available so it is best to check on the day

vilnius food tour

With its super chic grey interior and hipster design, Grey restaurant is definitely one of the hippest places to hang out in Vilnius!

Grey was designed to serve as a place in Vilnius where people could find both original and modern cuisine, without the daunting atmosphere that some restaurants have.

Their menu is European-based with traditional and contemporary dishes, and they also offer an impressive array of wine and beer.

Address: Pilies g. 2, 01124 Vilnius, Lithuania

Open: Everyday 11:30am – 11pm

Vegan Vilnius

Vegan vilnius food scene.

Vilnius is also home to a vibrant vegan food scene, with many restaurants offering delicious plant-based cuisine. Whether you’re looking for a healthy lunch or an indulgent dinner, Vilnius has it all and is an excellent destination for vegan travel .

Most Vilnius food places have vegan options and there are many Vilnius restaurants that are fully vegan too! Here are a couple of my faves…

Rosehip vegan bistro

a glass of wine on a table in front of a pink neon sign that reads 'rosehip'

I loved this place ! There is such a great vibe inside the restaurant and it’s very instagrammable too.

I got over-excited and ordered myself an absolute feast of pink hummus, olives, salad and a HUGE beyond meat burger.

I would love to revisit this restaurant again as I am dying to try their vegan ‘seafood’, loaded potatoes, traditional cold beetroot soup and buddha bowls 🤤

The waitstaff here were all so friendly and although the food was served quickly they didn’t rush me to finish, which was nice.

A platter of hummus, olives and salad with a burger in the background

Address:  B. Radvilaitės g. 7, Vilnius 01124, Lithuania

Open: Everyday 11am-10pm

Culture vegan junk food

This was another restaurant that looked and smelled amazing every time I would walk past. Unfortunately, it was closed on the day that I had planned to go there so I was heartbroken that I didn’t get to try it.

I will definitely visit Culture if I return to Vilnius as I love good vegan junk food!

Address: Subačiaus g. 6, Vilnius 01302, Lithuania

Open: Wed-Sun, 2pm – 10pm

Vegafe – Vegan cafe in Vilnius

vilnius food tour

At Vegafe , you can expect wholesome meals made from natural ingredients that follow ayurvedic food preparation rules.

They have vegan-friendly options like pies, cauliflower couscous and legume meatballs.

Vegafe also has a selection of brunch options which is an excellent way to start the day.

Vegetarian and Vegan options

Casa La Familia – Vegan Pizza in Vilnius

Another restaurant that I ran out of time to try!

Every time I went by, the Casa La Familia restaurant was completely full. Apparently, this is the place to go if you want delicious vegan pizza in Vilnius.

They have lots of vegan and veggie options and most of the veggie pizzas can be made vegan with vegan cheese at no extra cost.

I will definitely book a table next time I go back to Vilnius.

Address: Rūdninkų g. 18, 01135 Vilnius, Lithuania

Open : Weekdays 11.30am – 10pm, Weekends 12pm – 10pm

Everything on the menu is vegetarian or can be made vegan

ZATAR falafel & hummus – Vegan Vilnius

If you are vegan you probably know that you can never go wrong with a good falafel. Zatar is the first falafel and hummus bistro in Vilnius.

They have a menu full of vegan options which include some Middle-Eastern specialities such as hummus, baba ghanoush and different types of falafel like the “lemony” or the “double crispy”.

I loved the food and the atmosphere in this restaurant! it was healthy, tasty and cheap.

I had a really nice falafel wrap with hummus, fresh salad and tahini sauce which was very tasty.

Address : Saltoniškių g. 9, 08105 Vilnius, Lithuania

Open: 10am – 9pm daily

Everything on the menu is vegetarian/vegan

Hooligans – Vegan restaurant in Vilnius

vilnius food tour

Hooligans is all about fun and positivity! I totally love the vibe of this place. Come here for some incredible (and colourful) vegan cakes that taste even better than they look!

Address: Verkių 27, Ogmios miestas, 08223 Vilnius, Lithuania

Open: Mon: 11.30am – 3pm, Tues-Thurs: 11.30am – 7pm, Fri: 11.30am – 8pm, Sat: 11.30am – 9pm, Sun:11.30am – 7pm

Bars in Vilnius

In addition to being a great foodie destination, Vilnius also has some great bars!

I visited in the winter so I really enjoyed ducking into a bar to warm up with a hot mulled wine after the sun went down each day. After all red wine is great for your health 😉

Here are a few of my favourite bars in Vilnius…

Decantus

Mulled wine in a bar in Vilnius, Lithuania

Decantus is an excellent wine bar in the heart of the old town.

I had a really yummy mulled wine here as well as a lovely chat with the barman and a local who were both so friendly and welcoming.

The bar itself is quite small but has a really cosy, relaxed vibe which was just perfect.

Address: Pilies g. 6, Vilnius 01124, Lithuania

Open: Mon-Fri: 2pm – 12am, Sat-Sun 12pm – 12am

Cafe Montmarte

This cute little French-themed cafe/wine bar is located on a busy street corner in the old town, which makes it a perfect spot for some people watching!

Cafe Montmarte has both indoor and outdoor seating. I sat outside and watched the world go by with a lovely glass of white wine in my hand. Even though it was the middle of winter, the huge outdoor heaters and blankets kept me feeling pretty toasty and warm.

Address: Didžioji g. 40, Vilnius 01127, Lithuania

Open: Mon-Thurs: 9am-10pm, Fri: 9am-11pm, Sat: 10am-11pm, Sun:10am-9pm

Downtown Forest

A bottle of Lithuanian craft beer in front of a fireplace

Ok, so this one isn’t actually a bar per se, it’s a hostel that also happens to have a great bar.

I stayed here during my trip to Vilnius and loved it.

The Downtown Forest bar is open to non-guests as well. In the winter you can curl up in one of the big armchairs next to the fireplace and enjoy a beer.

In the summertime, the outdoor bar is open, where you can sip your drinks out on the deck surrounded by nature in the middle of the city. I particularly loved the cute fairy lights strung between the trees!

Address: Paupio g. 31A, Vilnius 11341, Lithuania

I loved this super cute little wine bar. In Vino had a really lovely cosy atmosphere which made it the perfect place to duck in out of the cold.

The wine list is extensive and features wines from all over the world. I particularly enjoyed their selection of Vilnius-made local wines!

Address: Aušros Vartų g. 7, 01013 Vilnius, Lithuania

Open: 4pm – 2am daily

Coffee in Vilnius

My favourite place to get coffee in Vilnius is Kava tau .

This awesome little coffee shop is in a great location close to the Subačiaus apžvalgos aikštelė viewpoint, which has fantastic views across all of Vilnius.

Treat yourself to coffee and a cake or pastry and sit out on the deck. In the summer they have lounge chairs and hammocks too, making this a great spot to relax for a while.

Address: Subaciaus Apzvalgos Aikstele, Vilnius 01126 Lithuania

Open: Daily 8am-10pm

Vegan options available
