Washington Commanders Rival Giants Defense 'Going To Look a Lot Different' in 2024

Former Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell is putting the team that drafted him in the rearview mirror as he continues his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks.

Despite moving from one coast to the other, however, it's not likely he'll shake the memories of his experiences as a Commanders quarterback going up against the New York Giants defense in 2023.

READ MORE: 'Lame Duck' Cowboys Prepping for Washington-Like Overhaul Next Offseason?

In two contests against the Giants last season the Washington quarterback was sacked 10 times. Not as much in an individual game as the nine times he was brought down against the Buffalo Bills, but still pretty significant. No other team sacked Howell more, despite both the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys getting two cracks at hiim themselves.

There are plenty of reasons to point fingers at the Commanders themselves for why their quarterback was sacked so much, but there's also the talent on the New York defense that was led by defensive cooridnator Wink Martindale. A problem new Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels won't have to deal with.

And it turns out, under new coordinator Shane Bowen, the Giants defense will have some familiar faces, but have a different look according to Patricia Traina of the Locked On Giants podcast.

New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence sacks former Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell.

"Martindale, when he was here, lived and died by the blitz, it was, 'I'm going to die on this hill, and if we succeed, great. If we don't, well, I'm just going to bring it again.' Shane Bowen, the new defensive coordinator, is taking a slightly different approach. " -  Patricia Traina, Locked On Giants

"I think it's going to look a lot different, actually," Traina said on the Locked On Commanders podcast. "Martindale, when he was here, lived and died by the blitz, it was, 'I'm going to die on this hill, and if we succeed, great. If we don't, well, I'm just going to bring it again.' Shane Bowen, the new defensive coordinator, is taking a slightly different approach. He's defining aggressive or being aggressive differently and that you can be aggressive with your play call. You don't have to necessarily blitz the heck out of a quarterback every single time. You don't have to get fancy...

"Shane Bowen (will have) a little different approach with the scheme. He wants to get pressure with the front seven, which is how you want it to be, and I think a big reason for that, not only is that how Shane Bowen is kind of operated all along, but the Giants have a very young secondary, and that's probably where the biggest question mark is right now for me."

Blitzing in the NFL isn't exactly rare, but the rate the New York defense did it was unique. And it created the natural concern of leaving too few coverage players in play in case an opposing offense was able to get off a pass attempt.

The idea was that either an opponent would take a sack or throw the ball away, be forced into an inaccurate throw leading to an incompletion or interception, or be forced to look short where the remaining players beyond the line of scrimmage could rally to the ball.

Against the Commanders it worked like a charm. But it doesn't always. And that appears to be where Bowen is going to be a bit different in that he'll blitz, but not as aggressively and he'll leave more defenders in coverage to better spread out his assets.

According to Sports Info Solutions , Martindale called blitzes 46 percent of the time. Second-most among all NFL defensive play-callers and one spot behind Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores who came as close to a 50/50 split as anyone could.

Bowen was the defensive coordinator and play-caller for the Tennessee Titans last season and blitzed just 19 percent of the time, ranking 26th in the NFL. Of course, he didn't have the stable of weapons Martindale did and they've since added elite edge rusher Brian Burns to the mix as well.

So that number is likely to go up, but it still won't look anywhere close to what Washington saw from the Giants defense last season.

Joe Biden Is a Good Man and a Good President. He Must Bow Out of the Race.

Biden exits from behind a podium bearing the letters “CNN.” The background is bright blue and red.

By Thomas L. Friedman

Opinion Columnist, reporting from Lisbon

I watched the Biden-Trump debate alone in a Lisbon hotel room, and it made me weep. I cannot remember a more heartbreaking moment in American presidential campaign politics in my lifetime, precisely because of what it revealed: Joe Biden, a good man and a good president, has no business running for re-election. And Donald Trump, a malicious man and a petty president, has learned nothing and forgotten nothing. He is the same fire hose of lies he always was, obsessed with his grievances — nowhere close to what it will take for America to lead in the 21st century.

The Biden family and political team must gather quickly and have the hardest of conversations with the president, a conversation of love and clarity and resolve. To give America the greatest shot possible of deterring the Trump threat in November, the president has to come forward and declare that he will not be running for re-election and is releasing all of his delegates for the Democratic National Convention.

The Republican Party, if its leaders had an ounce of integrity, would demand the same, but it won’t, because they don’t. That makes it all the more important that Democrats put the country’s interests first and announce that a public process will begin for different Democratic candidates to compete for the nomination — town halls, debates, meetings with donors, you name it. Yes, it could be chaotic and messy when the Democratic convention starts on Aug. 19 in Chicago, but I think the Trump threat is sufficiently grave that delegates could quickly rally around a consensus nominee.

If Vice President Kamala Harris wants to compete, she should. But voters deserve an open process in search of a Democratic presidential nominee who can unite not only the party but also the country, by offering something neither man on that Atlanta stage did on Thursday night: a compelling description of where the world is right now and a compelling vision for what America can and must do to keep leading it — morally, economically and diplomatically.

Because this is no ordinary hinge of history we are at. We are at the start of the biggest technological disruptions and the biggest climate disruption in human history. We are at the dawn of an artificial intelligence revolution that is going to change EVERYTHING FOR EVERYONE — how we work, how we learn, how we teach, how we trade, how we invent, how we collaborate, how we fight wars, how we commit crimes and how we fight crimes. Maybe I missed it, but I did not hear the phrase “artificial intelligence” mentioned by either man at the debate.

If there was ever a time that the world needed an America at its best, led by its best, it is now — for great dangers and opportunities are now upon us. A younger Biden could have been that leader, but time has finally caught up with him. And that was painfully and inescapably obvious on Thursday.

Biden has been a friend of mine since we traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan together after Sept. 11, 2001, when he was the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, so I say all of the above with great sadness.

But if he caps his presidency now, by acknowledging that because of age he is not up to a second term, his first and only term will be remembered as among the better presidencies in our history. He saved us from consecutive Trump terms, and for that alone he deserves the Presidential Medal of Freedom, but he also enacted important legislation crucial to confronting the climate and technology revolutions now upon us.

I had been ready to give Biden the benefit of the doubt up to now, because during the times I engaged with him one on one, I found him up to the job. He clearly is not any longer. His family and his staff had to have known that. They have been holed up at Camp David preparing for this momentous debate for days now. If that is the best performance they could summon from him, he should preserve his dignity and leave the stage at the end of this term.

If he does, everyday Americans will hail Joe Biden for doing what Donald Trump would never do: put the country before himself.

If he insists on running and he loses to Trump, Biden and his family — and his staff and party members who enabled him — will not be able to show their faces.

They deserve better. America needs better. The world needs better.

After Biden's shaky debate performance, Democrats' support is lukewarm

WASHINGTON – After months of watching their Republican colleagues answer for the chaos in their party, it was Congress’ Democratic lawmakers who had to respond to the tough questions on Friday.

The morning after President Joe Biden’s shocking first debate of the 2024 White House campaign against presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump – marked by stumbles, freezes and an unforgettable gaffe that the Democratic incumbent “finally beat Medicare” – his party's elected officials were swarmed by reporters asking whether it was time to abandon Biden as their nominee.

Those lawmakers who may stand a chance of convincing Biden to drop out of the race, such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., ignored shouted questions as they entered the historic chamber. They kept their heads down, though they answered questions after they later emerged.

A number of Democratic staffers trailed their bosses to ensure they wouldn’t veer off message. Other Democrats quickly left the Capitol and ducked any questions about Biden’s debate performance, flying out of Washington for a week-long Fourth of July recess.

Lawmakers who did speak with reporters acknowledged Biden’s performance was not his best, but brushed off inquiries about whether he is the best choice to represent Democrats as they face off against Trump – the former president who many in the Democratic Party see as an existential threat to U.S. democracy.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

“It was not his best time, but it was one event,” said Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., the former chairman of the House Select Committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. “His policies make sense for the country and a lot of us are sticking with him.”

The president “got off to a bad start,” said Pelosi, who added that she thought Biden later “came through okay on the issues.”

Biden performed “horribly” last night, Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., said. “I think a lot of my friends are not at the logical point right now. I think people are panic stricken,” Cleaver said of his fellow Democrats’ calls to switch out Biden for a different nominee.

Democratic pundits and strategists have raised the prospect of holding an open contest at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this August in an attempt to replace Biden with another nominee on the November ticket.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said it was “not my position” to say whether Biden should drop out of the race: “I stand behind the ticket.”

“Stay the course. Chill out,” said Clyburn to those in his party pushing for a replacement. He said it was “a poor performance,” but “who classifies the end result by one segment, one performance?”

“That was strike one,” he later added. “If this were a ball game, he’s got two more swings.”

“Joe Biden is going to be our nominee. End of story,” Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., who was at at the debate as a surrogate on behalf of the Biden campaign, told reporters Friday. “We’re gonna unite behind Joe Biden.”

One of Biden's top campaign surrogates, Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., told reporters: "We have a great team of people that will help govern and that is what I'm going to continue to make the case for," in what appeared to be a tacit admission Biden needs others' help to lead.

There was little attempt from Democrats to spin the narrative given Biden’s shaky performance. Those that did tried to focus on Trump’s myriad false claims on the debate stage, including that he offered National Guard troops to protect the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Thompson blamed the debate moderators for not fact-checking Trump’s claims, despite the Biden campaign proposing the debates and agreeing to the parameters. It was Biden’s staffers, Thompson said, who erred.

“His advisors and others should have helped him come up with the ground rules for the debate and obviously most people would have chosen ground rules (so) at least people couldn’t get up and say something that factually wasn’t true,” Thompson said.

Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., acknowledged Biden had the opportunity to discredit Trump and rebuke his false claims, but “it didn’t happen.”

Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., went further and said Biden should not proceed with a second debate against Trump, which is currently scheduled for September. A Biden campaign adviser told USA TODAY the president does not plan to drop out of the race and is committed to taking part in a second debate against Trump.

Democrats in competitive races rebuffed the electoral risks of having Biden at the top of the ticket.

Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Texas, said he doesn't think the debate performance will have "any impact" on the Senate race his colleague Rep. Colin Allred, D-Texas, is running against Sen. Ted Cruz in the Lone Star state.

"I think the American public wants a Democratic House and a Democratic Senate," Veasey said.

“The performance that I have between now and November and the record that I have voting in Congress – that’s what’s going to give people the confidence to reelect me in my district,” Rep. Gabe Vasquez, D-N.M., one of the most vulnerable House Democrats said, declining to say whether he has concerns about Biden’s presence on the ticket.

“We’re a purple state. We’re always worried about Michigan,” said Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., who is close to the state’s Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, an oft-mentioned contender for the Democratic nomination if Biden were not running. “I’m not part of the drama of this town that demands because somebody had a bad night we’re in a crisis. Let’s see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Republicans were gloating about Trump’s performance. Thursday night’s debate offered a massive sense of vindication for GOP lawmakers who have relentlessly attacked Biden over his age and mental fitness to serve.

“There was only one man on that stage who is capable and qualified of being elected president in the next term, and his name is Donald J. Trump,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters. “President Biden showed last night that he was weak, sadly, that he is feeble and he said a number of things that are just demonstrably untrue.”

Trump “demonstrated command talking about issues that are plaguing this country. As far as Joe Biden?” said Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., one of the nearly 20 Republicans seen as an option for Trump's vice-presidential running mate. Shrugging and cracking a smile, Donalds added: “My Democrat colleagues – I’ll let them talk about that.”

Correction: An earlier version of this story misidentified one of the lawmakers who commented on President Biden's debate performance. The quote came from Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Texas.

'I don't debate as well as I used to': Biden tries to move on from his tough debate at an energized rally

RALEIGH, N.C. — President Joe Biden tried to turn his disappointing debate performance into a rallying cry for his supporters at an event on Friday, painting himself as down but not out as some in his party whisper about replacing him atop the ticket.

"I know I'm not a young man. I don't walk as easy as I used to. I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to, but I know what I do know — I know how to tell the truth!" an energetic Biden said, nodding at the criticism he received following Thursday night's debate while contrasting it with assessments about the accuracy of several statements by former President Donald Trump.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden

"When you get knocked down, you get back up," Biden yelled, to a cheering crowd.

"I intend to win this state in November," Biden said about North Carolina. "We win here, we win the election."

The campaign event, in a state that hasn’t voted Democrat for a presidential candidate since Barack Obama in 2008, comes after what many political observers and some Democrats have said was a poor debate performance by Biden Thursday night against former President Donald Trump.

The president’s weak energy level and hoarse, raspy during Thursday’s debate voice sent some Democrats into a tailspin, worried that a week of prep at Camp David had produced a lackluster performance.

There were moments when Biden, 81, froze during the debate, appearing to lose his train of thought and times when he tripped over his words, though he has struggled with a stutter his entire life.

About last night, Biden said on Friday, "I spent 90 minutes on the stage and debated the guy who has the morals of an alley cat."

Though he coughed at times during Friday's remarks, Biden's demeanor was more lively, delivering attack lines and riling up the crowd.

Biden said that when he thought about Trump's 34 felony convictions, his sexual assault on E. Jean Carroll, and being fined millions of dollars for business fraud, "I thought to myself, Donald Trump isn't just a convicted felon — Donald Trump is a one-man crime wave."

A senior Biden adviser said the campaign team worked closely with the president Friday morning to draft his closing remarks in Raleigh about the debate. It was not, the adviser said, a response to negative coverage or the calls growing in the party for him to consider stepping aside. Biden, the adviser said, knows full well he didn’t deliver the performance he needed to last night and knew he needed to directly address it Friday.

First lady Jill Biden, donning a black dress that said "vote" all over it in white letters, delivered remarks before her husband and touted the president's strength and ability to lead.

"Even though he has faced unimaginable tragedies, his optimism is undaunted, his strength is unshakable, his hope is undeterred," she said. "And over the last few years. Joe has helped heal our country, helping us all recover from the chaos of the last administration."

"We don’t choose our chapter in history, but we can choose who leads us through it," she continued. "What you saw last night on the debate stage was Joe Biden — a president with integrity and character who told the truth and Donald Trump told lie after lie after lie."

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, said on stage that there are 130 days before "the biggest election of our lifetime."

"I know that tensions are high right now, but this election is not just about what kind of president we want to have. This election is about what kind of country we want to be," said Cooper, who asked the crowd if they wanted to be in "Donald Trump's America." Eventually, the audience began chanting "lock him up!"

At the event, several Biden supporters acknowledged his lackluster performance but defended him.

"It wasn’t his best night, but he’s a better president," said John Burns. "He’s a better man, and he’s going to get my vote and my work for the next five months."

"When you look at the totality of what he’s done for our country and what he means for us, then I think that you walk away looking at not just one moment in time, but his contributions to our nation and to our society," Tara Winters said.

Another supporter, David Tillem, said that advisers should "pace" the campaign better. "Who else is there? That’s the question. He’s the one who’s been out front. Can he do it? Yeah," he said about Biden. "Is he going to be running his ass into the ground campaigning? Probably should pace it better."

While Biden embarks on post-debate campaign travel, his supporters are quietly fretting in Washington.

Some Democrats, who spoke to NBC News anonymously , began calling after the debate for Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race so that the Democratic Party could nominate a new candidate.

Other Democrats who spoke publicly reiterated their support for Biden. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a potential future presidential candidate, told MSNBC immediately following the debate that Democrats shouldn’t be panicking.

“I think it’s unhelpful and I think it’s unnecessary. We’ve got to go in, we got to keep our heads high, and as I say, we’ve got to have the back of this president,” he said. “You don’t turn your back because of one performance. What kind of party does that?”

He added, “Democrats delivered. This president has delivered. We need to deliver for him at this moment.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, another possible future Democratic presidential candidate, admitted in an interview Friday morning on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that Biden didn’t do well last night, but stressed that Democrats should “stop worrying.”

“I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with both the former president and President Biden, and you know what I can tell you, Joe Biden is up to the job,” he said.
