TREK Protein Flapjack Review

Looking for a delicious and nutritious snack that’s perfect for on-the-go? TREK Protein Flapjacks might just be what you need! These classic flapjacks are made from 100% plant-based ingredients, including gluten-free oats and soya protein crunchies, making them vegan-friendly and naturally gluten-free.

But how do they taste, and what’s their texture like? In this review, we’ll explore all that and more. We’ll also take a closer look at the nutritional value of TREK Protein Flapjacks, so you can decide if they’re the right snack for you. So let’s dive in!

When it comes to taste, TREK Protein Flapjacks do not disappoint. With a wide range of flavors to choose from, including Cocoa Oat, Lemon, Peanut Butter, and Salted Caramel, there’s something to satisfy every taste bud.

The Cocoa flavours are a particular favourite, offering a delectable chocolatey taste that hits the spot without being too sweet. The thin layer of chocolate coating adds a decadent touch, while the gluten-free oats provide a satisfying chewiness that leaves you feeling full and satisfied.

For those who prefer a fruitier taste, the Morning Berry flavour is a great choice. With its soft crunch and subtle sweetness, it’s the perfect way to start your day on a high note. And with all the goodness of gluten-free oats and plant-based protein, you can indulge in this treat guilt-free.

Overall, the taste of TREK Protein Flapjacks is a testament to their quality and attention to detail. Whether you’re in the mood for something chocolatey, fruity, or nutty, you can be sure that these flapjacks will deliver a satisfying and delicious snacking experience.

Texture is just as important as taste, and TREK Flapjacks deliver on both fronts. The gluten-free oats and soya protein crunchies give the flapjacks a satisfyingly chewy texture that’s not too dense, making them a great snack for any time of the day.

The thin layer of chocolate coating is great and adds an extra crunch and smoothness to each bite. The Cocoa Coconut flavour has little bits of coconut, which adds to its rich texture and flavour, giving it an almost tropical feel. If you’re a fan of coconut, you should love the taste of this one!

Meanwhile, the Morning Berry flavour has a soft crunch to it with some tasty subtle sweetness, and the mix of raspberries and oats is not too sweet and does not leave an artificial taste in your mouth. With this flavour, you can expect the flavourful and juicy taste of a traditional British flapjack, infused with the goodness of fruit.

TREK Protein Flapjacks are the perfect option for you! With a balanced 2:1 carbohydrate-to-protein ratio, these flapjacks make a great post-workout snack that can help replenish your muscle energy stores and maintain optimal blood sugar levels. Plus, with 10 grams of protein per serving, they can also help you to build and maintain muscle.

And the best part? These flapjacks are plant-based, wheat and gluten-free, GM free, and suitable for vegans! Keep reading to learn more about the nutritious ingredients in the Cocoa Oat flavour:

Trek Protein Flapjacks and Protein Energy Bars Review

A selection of 4 Trek protein flapjacks and protein energy bars laid out on a light grey slate background. 2 packets are open revealing the bars and the other two are closed.

When the worlds biggest flapjack fan gets sent a parcel containing protein flapjacks to review you just know it’s gonna be a good day. I mean come on, free flapjacks, that I haven’t had to make, popped through my letterbox, ready to be devoured. AWESOME!

Trek protein flapjacks along with their range of protein energy bars are, as the name would so rightly indicate, packed to the packets with protein. Check out the nutrition blurb on the packet and you’ll spot that each bar contains anything from between 9g up to almost 11g of protein per bar.

The clever little so and so’s at Trek have created their snack bars to suit two very important factors when it comes to exercising. With an optimal 2:1 carb-to-protein ratio, the flapjacks make for perfect post-workout recovery fuel and the energy bars are cold pressed with raw wholefood ingredients which means they are great for endurance exercise as they provide a long lasting source of energy without any of those dreaded sugar spikes. Both are made using gluten-free oats and are suitable for vegans, plus the energy bars also provide 1 of your 5 a day.

I was sent 4 different bars to try out in order to let you lovely lot know what they taste like, so here goes:

Cocoa Coconut Protein Flapjack

When you peel back the wrapper of a protein flapjack and you spy a smooth brown coating peeping back at ya, you know you’re onto a winner. With its crunchy, coconut, oaty base and a good old helping of chocolate on top, these Trek Cocoa Coconut Protein Flapjacks are like the bastard love child of a Bounty and your mum’s best flapjack recipe.  The texture is crunchier than I expected, however I love that you can taste and feel the texture of the coconut and the chocolate topping really helps ‘lubricate’ the bar (well there’s a sentence you don’t read everyday!). A 50g bar is ever so filling, and the chocolate makes it quite rich, so it would be ideal fuel to take on a trek and spread it out with a bite here and there as and when you fancy it.

Morning Berry Protein Flapjack

This tightly packed pale coloured protein flapjack has lovely little flecks of berries running through it. It crumbles easily when you get it out of the packet and although it has a nice sweet berry taste, it is slightly dry for my liking. Having said that, flapjacks aren’t just for fitness fiends, oh no siree they’re also fab for getting you through that mid afternoon slump and these make a fab dunking partner to your afternoon cuppa. Chewy and crunchy at the same time, it kind of tastes a bit like puffed rice exploding in your mouth with each bite.

Cocoa Raisin Protein Flapjack

This is the new flavour on the block and oh what a flavour. Topped with chocolate (hooray to that!) and packed with a tonne of juicy big raisins there’s no doubt this one tastes sweeter and contains more sugar than the other protein flapjacks. And at first, I wasn’t too sure about the taste, however this is the grower of the bunch, the one I kept nibbling and picking at when taste testing. It’s the one that feels the most extravagant and the one you’re most likely to choose as a daily snack, rather than as fitness fuel. Chocolate and raisins in a flapjack, in my eyes you can’t really go wrong!

Peanut Power Protein Energy Bar

First up let’s talk about the genius mastermind that came up with the idea of making this a snappable bar. Yep, this protein energy bar has just made your long run fuelling a hell of a lot easier. Looking like a peanut butter shaped chocolate bar, it has been designed to be eaten in 3 chunks to help fuel you at intervals. And with its slow release energy and its natural whole food ingredients it is a darn sight better than those hideous energy gels!

Smells like caramel, looks like caramel, it’s basically like compacted crunchy peanut butter with a sweet caramel after taste. Yes the sugars are high, but it’s from the natural sugars of the fruit and not from added sugar or syrup. Unlike the flapjacks, this is a cold pressed product, so there is no baking involved. It makes for a slightly chewier bar but there is still a satisfying crunch to it. As well as being gluten free, the Peanut Power Protein Energy Bar is wheat and dairy free too.

A great fuel to slip in your backpack if you’re doing an adventure challenge, as it is packed with lots of energy and is easy to eat as you go along. I definitely plan on taking one out with me on my next long run to see if it makes a difference to how I feel when I run, both during and afterwards.

Let’s be honest, we’ve all tasted a protein bar at some point and thought: “That is actually disgusting”.  Despite this, protein – which provides the building blocks for essential stuff such as cells, muscles, bone, nails, hormones and enzymes – has achieved a hallowed status in the health and fitness world, mainly due to its ability to help you recover after a vigorous workout and gain muscle mass.

It’s big business – just look at the supermarket shelves: extra-protein Weetabix, protein powders that come in every flavour you can think of, protein shakes, protein bars, protein yoghurts. We can’t get enough of the stuff.

No longer reserved just for top athletes, protein has crept into every boutique gym and inner-city kitchen alike. Globally, the protein bar market size was valued at $4.66bn (£3.29bn) in 2019 and is expected to reach $7.03bn (£4.97bn) by 2027.

Over the years, we have tried many protein bars and, without fail, two things happen. The first is they taste gross – like a mixture of earwax and chalk. The second thing is they get shunned to the back of the snack drawer, never to be seen again (until they go past their sell-by date and end up in the bin, of course).

With this in mind, we set out to find the best protein bars that deliver nutrition and flavour.

How we tested the best protein bars

During our quest to find a protein bar that actually tasted, well, nice – while also being healthy enough to serve as a filling post-workout boost (and not just a glorified chocolate bar) – we tested some of the biggest names in the market. We tried them both pre- and post-workout, after training in the gym and tempo run sessions and mid-way through long cycle rides out on the bike, to see which ones delivered on taste, high protein and low sugar. These are the ones that really packed a punch.

The best protein bars for 2024 are:

  • Best protein bar overall – Grenade carb killa chocolate chip salted caramel, box of 12: £25, Grenade.com
  • Best protein bar for cycling – Clif Bar white chocolate macadamia nut, box of 12: £19.98, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best protein bar for ultramarathons  – Tribe raspberry protein flapjack, box of 12: £15, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best plant-based protein bar – Trek Power millionaire shortbread bar: £1.50, Ocado.com
  • Best recovery protein bar – Veloforte forza protein bar, box of 12: £35, Sigmasports.com

Grenade Carb Killa chocolate chip salted caramel, box of 12

Grenade Carb Killa Salted Caramel.jpg

  • Best : Protein bar overall
  • Protein per bar : 20g
  • Weight per bar : 60g
  • Price per bar : £2.08
  • Ideal swap for a regular chocolate bar
  • High protein value

Grenade’s Carb Killa franchise is well-known, and for good reason. Perfect before a spin class or post-strength workout to aid your muscle recovery (or even just with a cup of coffee), this delicious, triple-layered, chocolate-encased bar – with salted caramel and soft nougat filling – is packed with 20g protein and just 1.4g sugar. Plus, Carb Killa bars are certified with the Informed Sport programme – so they’re suitable for use by drug-tested athletes.

We’re slowly making our way through all 14 of the epic flavours – we really rate the white chocolate, salted peanut, and birthday cake flavours – but we just keep coming back to the salted caramel. We can’t believe something this delicious has hardly any sugar. If you’re looking for a high protein option, this is truly a tough bar to beat.

Tribe raspberry protein flapjack, box of 12

Tribe protein flapjack indybest.jpg

  • Best : Protein bar for ultramarathons
  • Protein per bar : 7g
  • Weight per bar : 50g
  • Price per bar : £1.25
  • Enjoyable texture
  • Great brand mission

Sometimes, nothing other than a flapjack will do to help fuel your adventures. One of our personal favourites is this Tribe raspberry option, which offers a subtle sour kick alongside the soft and chewy flapjack base.

While they’re not as high in protein as others on this list (7g of plant-based protein), Tribe’s flapjacks taste like a genuine treat – and only have 1g of saturated fats. The crunchy peanut topping makes them stand out from the rest, which is why we’re prepared to overlook the lower protein content. Plus, by buying Tribe, you’re supporting the brand’s mission to end human trafficking.

Clif Bar white chocolate macadamia nut, box of 12

CLIF Bar white macadamia nut.jpeg

  • Best : Protein bar for cycling
  • Protein per bar : 9-11g
  • Weight per bar : 68g
  • Price per bar : £1.85
  • Great for high-energy sports

Filling and delicious, this oaty plant-based protein bar pairs roasted macadamia nuts with creamy white chocolate chunks. The sugar content might be higher – and protein content also lower – than some of the other protein bars on this list but, when it comes to tasting yummy, this bar came up trumps.

The elevated sugar also means they’re perfect for any high-energy sports – we love chucking them in the back pocket of a jersey ready for long cycle rides, as they’re ideal for that on-the-go pick-me-up.

If you like the brand, but want more protein for the growth and maintenance of muscle mass, try the Clif builders bar, which offers a punchy 20g of protein instead – but be warned, they definitely don’t taste as nice.

Trek Power millionaire shortbread

TREK power millionaire shortbread.jpeg

  • Best : Plant-based protein bar
  • Protein per bar : 15g
  • Weight per bar : 55g
  • Price per bar : £1.95
  • Gluten free
  • Plant-based and vegan

We’ve often picked up a chocolate-coated Trek flapjack while waiting in the checkout queue at Sainsbury’s – but did you know Trek also has a line of protein-packed snacks? The millionaire shortbread is probably our favourite – a tasty, gluten-free, plant-based vegan bar with 15g of protein.

Aside from the natural ingredients and comparatively high protein content of these bars, this is an ideal protein bar if you need a snack that will fill you up, help cut cravings and make you feel full for longer.

Veloforte forza protein bar, box of 12

Veloforte forza protein bar, 12 bars indybest.jpg

  • Best : Recovery protein bar
  • Protein per bar : 12g
  • Weight per bar : 70g
  • Price per bar : £2.92
  • Not too sickly sweet
  • Lovely and chewy
  • No nasty additives

Beloved by cyclists, this protein bar has a soft and chewy texture, while the mixture of apricots, almonds and fennel means it’s not too sweet or sickly, with egg whites providing 12g of protein. With no sulphites, additives, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colourings or flavourings, it’s gluten and dairy-free and completely free from any nasties.

Great for post-exercise or mid-way through a long cycle – for refuelling and recovery – we found the Veloforte bar easy to digest and its 3:1 ratio of carbohydrates to protein meant it kept us fuller for longer.

We recommend eating a Veloforte protein bar within 30 minutes of finishing exercise – as fuelling on a carbohydrate-rich snack within that 30-minute timeframe has been shown to help improve your recovery.

My Protein flapjack, box of 12

  • Best : Tasting protein bar
  • Weight per bar : 80g
  • Price per bar : £1
  • Very moreish
  • Great for boosting energy
  • High-calorie count
  • High in sugar

This flapjack bar is very moreish – it tastes great, the texture is buttery soft and, with 20g of protein, it’s got a lot more protein than many other bars out there. The calorie count is the highest on this list but that means it’s great for boosting your energy mid-cycle or run.

Those who want something low in sugar should probably look away now, but these oaty golden syrup bars are among the tastiest on sale at the moment – in fact, it’s the kind of snack you’ll probably want to keep reaching for after demolishing the first packet.

Beachbar chocolate almond crunch, box of 15

Beachbar - chocolate almond crunch.png

  • Best : Crunchy protein bar
  • Protein per bar : 9g
  • Weight per bar : 34g
  • Price per bar : £2.65
  • Rice Krispy bar texture
  • Gluten-free

If you like a crunch to your protein bar, the chocolate almond offering from Beachbar definitely gives you that. It’s basically like a Rice Krispy bar – with good consistency and high protein. This bar didn’t blow us away, but some of the flavours are quite enticing – for example, peanut butter chocolate and cherry almond. We liked that it ticks both the gluten-free and vegan boxes, too. It’s less chewy than the likes of Grenade and Barebell – and less sweet.

Barebells white salty peanut, box of 12

Barebells white salty peanut indybest.jpg

  • Best : White chocolate protein bar
  • Protein per bar : 17g
  • Price per bar : £2.17
  • Low sugar but high protein
  • Delicious and balanced flavours

Barebells was probably the first brand that made us realise protein bars didn’t have to taste chalky and gross. So, if you’re looking for a bar that’s low in sugar (2g) and high in protein (17g) without compromising on taste, this should be your go-to.

We’re fans of the cookies and cream (£23.99 for 12, Barebells.co.uk ) and hazelnut nougat (£23.99 for 12, Barebells.co.uk ) flavours but the brand’s white salty peanut bar is next level. With creamy white chocolate, golden salty peanuts, and a layer of caramel, it perfectly balances the salt and sweet taste buds. With only 209 calories, it’s hard to believe something that tastes this good classifies as a healthy snack.

Kind dark chocolate orange almond bar, box of 12

KIND dark chocolate orange almond bar.jpeg

  • Best : Nutty protein bar
  • Protein per bar : 5.6g
  • Weight per bar : 40g
  • No artificial colours or flavours

High in fibre, and with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, a whopping 53 per cent of this gluten-free bar is made up of nuts. It’s delicious as well as healthy. Drizzled with dark chocolate, this nutty treat has a hint of zesty orange peel – we often find ourselves reaching for a Kind bar as a mid-afternoon snack, because it’s actually enjoyable to eat. We all know that when you are satisfied with what you eat or snack on, you are less likely to overeat and you’ll stay fuller for longer. For those looking for a little more than 5g of protein, check out Kind’s crunchy peanut butter protein bar (£2, Tesco.co.uk ) for a delicious plant-protein hit.

Bulk macro munch protein bar, box of 12

Bulk macro munch protein bar, 12 bars indybest.jpg

  • Best : Protein bar for flavours
  • Weight per bar : 62g
  • Price per bar : £1.83
  • Super fun flavour options
  • Higher calorie count than some other bars

Millionaires shortbread, birthday cake, tiramisu, raspberry cheesecake, chocolate honeycomb… you’d be forgiven for thinking these were full-on desserts taken straight off a restaurant menu. However, Bulk’s macro munch protein bars have a lot less sugar in them than a standard dessert.

Although they are slightly higher in calorie count than others on this list – 224 calories per 62g bar – they also contain plenty of protein (20g) and offer more than 6g of fibre. The millionaire shortbread is our personal favourite, as we like the different textures, while the birthday cake, with its fun kid-like sprinkles, comes in as a close runner up.

As with most things, protein bars can be good for you and a great source of extra protein when eaten in moderation. In a 2023 study published in the Journal of Functional Foods, researchers found that daily intake of protein bars increased energy but also increased body fat mass.

While it’s always best to get your nutritional needs through food, a protein bar can tide you over after the gym or until you get home to have your next meal. Always check the nutritional label, some protein bars are filled with so much sugar that they become glorified chocolate bars.

The verdict: Protein bars

We found it incredibly hard to choose an overall winner here, as several of these bars met our number-one requirement: being a protein bar that doesn’t taste like one. Our favourites include Barebells , Tribe and MyProtein flapjack but it’s Grenade’s Carb Killa chocolate chip salted caramel bar that earned our top spot – proving it’s actually possible to make delicious treats that are high in protein and low in sugar.

Looking for a definitive review of the taste, nutritional value and overall value for money of the Trek Cocoa Oat Protein Flapjack? You’ve come to the right place!

Today, I’m reviewing in full Trek’s chocolate flapjack (after purchasing a pack of 16 straight from Amazon Prime ). We’ll be covering the taste and texture, protein content and nutritional value, as well as providing some comparisons to similar products so you can make your own decision as to whether or not to buy them.

Click here to go straight to the product on Amazon UK (opens in a new tab).

Let’s get stuck in!

Find Out More – The Best Vegan Protein Bars UK

Trek Cocoa Oat Flapjack

If you’re vegan and living in the UK (I’m assuming you are if you’re reading this!) then you’ve almost certainly heard of Trek. They one of the leading manufacturers of high-quality, nutritional snacks and supplements, specialising in protein rich foods.

Good news for us vegans – Trek’s Protein Energy Bars, Protein Flapjacks and Protein Nut Bars are all completely vegan, gluten free (bonus!) and GM free (double bonus!).

Trek’s Cocoa Oat Protein Flapjack is readily available to buy direct from Amazon UK, with free one-day delivery via Prime if you have an Amazon Prime subscription.

Now, let’s get stuck into the taste of these little packets of vegan-y goodness.

Trek Chocolate Flapjack Taste

trek cocoa oat flapjack

We went ahead and bought a pack of 16 bars from Amazon UK for this review. If you’re looking to get hold of some, this is where we would recommend buying them from.

They arrived the next day, and our hungry vegans got stuck in! Now remember, we’ve bought and tried a LOT of vegan protein bars in our time, so you’re getting a real comparison review of the taste here. If we feel there’s a better product in a similar price bracket, we’ll tell it like it is.

We found the overall taste to be exactly what you’d expect – flapjack-y and chocolately. Very, very nice indeed. The cocoa and oat combination was always going to be a winner, and the Trek Cocoa Oat Protein Flapjack is no different – absolutely delicious. Possibly a little on the sweet side for certain tastes, but I have no issue with that and it’s not an overpowering sweetness.

The bars are super chewy, not too crumbly, with a nice moist texture and balanced flavour. You’d think they had slipped some gluten in there to get them this chewy, but nope! Completely gluten-free, these Trek Chocolate Flapjacks are perfect for gluten-sensitive vegans and coeliacs.

Word of warning – these little guys are very addictive. With one bar having 227kcal, it’s very easy to finish one and immediately start eyeing up the next one. We recommend taking one or two with you and keeping the rest in the cupboard so the box isn’t staring at you all day!

We found that we were using them as a breakfast replacement on days when we had to rush out to the office. They kept us going through until lunch, so they’re great for keeping those hunger cravings at bay.

If you’re tracking your macros or generally health-conscious, we’ve broken down the nutritional content and values of the Trek Cocoa Oat Protein Flapjack below.

trek cocoa oat protein bar

Calories sit at a fairly moderate 227kcal per bar, which is about average for this kind of product. Just be aware if you’re planning on eating a second one as you’ll be at almost 500kcal from what’s effectively a supplement/snack.

Protein is decent for the Trek cocoa oat bar, sitting at almost 10g ber bar, giving you a nice little boost of protein for a pre or post-workout snack.

RRP for the Trek Cocoa Oat Protein Flapjack stands at arounf £16.80, which equates to about £1 per flapjack which isn’t too bad. A lot of places charge anywhere between £1-£2 for similar products, so Treks flapjacks are good value for money.

If you’re seeing them on Amazon UK for anything less than that, then you should definitely jump on the chance to get them at the lower price. At time of review, they were heavily reduced, down to just £8.13 for a box of 16 bars – incredible value!

Click here to see the best available price on Amazon UK.

Final Verdict

After a whirlwind week of eating 16 Trek Cocoa Oat Protein Flapjack bars, it’s safe to say that we are big fans of them here at Best Vegan HQ.

If you’re looking for a high-protein snack that fills you up and is vegan, gluten-free and affordable, then look no further!
