For many, a visit to the United Kingdom will start and end with London. Not only can this leave your wallet suffering from post-traumatic stress, but it ignores and to some extent, misrepresents what the country has to offer. When deciding to venture outside the M25 and head north, Liverpool or Manchester may well make the destination shortlist.

Steeped in historical significance, footballing success and acting as a production line for big names in music, both these cities are inhabited by distinct peoples whose regional accents are unique to the point where one’s ears may require a retune on arrival.

While Liverpool might be your choice if you’re interested in maritime history, Liverpool FC or The Beatles, Manchester is home to two major football teams as well as plenty of Industrial Revolution history.

However, if trying to decide which of the two to opt for, there is a lot more to consider!

Table of Contents

Port cities often exude a unique blend of culture and Liverpool is no exception. Hard times have forged a native population notorious for their sharp wit, sense of humour and warmth.

The city’s museums and waterfront are a reminder of Liverpool’s heritage but the once commercial maritime pursuits associated with the docks have given way to a more modern edge – upmarket bars and restaurants fuelling lively nightlife, with an injection of creativity and art.

Accessibility

Whether it’s Liverpool or Manchester, one will find both highly accessible cities despite their North Western locations with direct routes to and from London. Both make for a great stop on the London to Edinburgh drive .

Three motorways serve Liverpool, although someone thinking of driving from London should expect a trip lasting around four-and-a-half hours (if using the main M6 and M40 arterial route).

National Express run coaches that link London Victoria to Liverpool One Coach Station in Canning Place, a direct journey that takes in the region of 6 hours.

The main rail connection into Liverpool is via Lime Street station, with direct routes to many destinations in and around the North West, Newcastle and London Euston; the latter journey taking around 2 hours 30 minutes. View bus & train timetables here .

Liverpool’s metro system and local rail links are provided by Merseyrail should a visitor wish to explore Merseyside using public transport, although buses are also a viable option.

For those wanting to fly, Liverpool John Lennon Airport is 9 miles from the city centre and offers both domestic flights and routes to major European destinations. Manchester Airport is 45 minutes from Liverpool city centre and provides additional long-haul flight opportunities.

Walking is a great way to experience somewhere new and fortunately, Liverpool is compact enough to satiate the avid walker. There is also a bike hire scheme run by CityBike for those wanting to replace two legs with the equivalent number of wheels.

Part public transport, part icon, the ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ takes passengers from Pier Head to the Wirral with services running every 20 minutes. They also offer a hop-on, hop-off cruise.

Affordability

If affordability is a key component of deciding whether to go to Manchester or Liverpool, then there is little to choose between the two. In general, northern English cities tend to offer better value for money for the mainstays of travel – food, accommodation and transport – although prices in both could rise as urban renewal projects attract a wealthier populace.

Liverpool offers accommodation for all tastes and budgets. Expect to pay more in and around the waterfront and costs tend to rise when Liverpool FC are playing at home. August may also be costlier with the arrival of the music festivals.

Most culinary tastes will be catered for with a variety of high end through to budget dining options as well as a range of cuisine types. For reasonably priced, independent restaurants, try Bold Street in the Ropewalks area with some of the finer restaurants to be found in the Georgian Quarter.

Lots of Liverpool’s top sights are free to enter including the Maritime and International Slavery Museums, Liverpool Museum and Tate Liverpool. Of course, a stroll along the famous waterfront, Sefton Park and popping along to spots made famous by The Beatles, will also mean spending nothing other than your time.

Merseyrail offers a selection of passes and tickets for use on the underground system. Lines travel as far as Southport and the Wirral, down to the Roman city of Chester. One can purchase an integrated ticket using Plusbus for further transport options using unsurprisingly, the local buses.

Things to do in Liverpool

Within a 20-minute walk from Lime Street train station is a symbol of both Liverpool’s maritime past and regeneration, the Royal Albert Dock.

Once a focal point of trading for the British Empire, the dock became redundant and abandoned (and completely filled with silt) before redevelopment in the 1980s transformed the area into a hub for restaurants, entertainment and cultural activity. In 2004 it achieved UNESCO World Heritage status, cementing its place of importance for both past and present.

Situated in the dock itself, one can get a more in-depth look at the port of Liverpool’s rich historical past at the Maritime Museum. The displays use objects, models, paintings and even full-sized vessels to tell the story of the commercial and social aspects that once made Liverpool one of the greatest ports in the world.

Visitors can also learn about the city’s strong ties to the infamous, supposedly unsinkable cruise liner RMS Titanic, which although never visited Liverpool, was conceived in the city by its parent company White Star Line.

On the 3rd floor of the Maritime Museum, marking one of the most shameful periods of human history stands the International Slavery Museum. Liverpool grew and prospered rapidly during the 18 th century thanks largely to its considerable involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.

The subject is handled in an informative, sensitive manner whilst discussing issues still prevalent in terms of modern-day slavery.

Albert Docks in Liverpool

Liverpool’s rebirth has been reflected in its most successful football team. As legendary football manager Bill Shankly once quipped “I always said we had the best two teams on Merseyside… Liverpool and Liverpool Reserves.”

Crowned European Champions in 2019, Liverpool FC seem to be on the way to regaining former glories and fans can indulge in their status as a supporter with a tour of the club’s home stadium, Anfield. Getting tickets to games is extremely difficult so it’s best to sign up to their member base long in advance of your trip. Alternatively, you can look at reputable resellers like StubHub.

Numerous packages are on offer with the basic version allowing access to views of the pitch and areas including the dressing rooms, players’ tunnel and dugout. Visitors can pre-purchase tickets which also buys entry to the interactive museum and a look at the now 6 European cups.

Talk of Liverpool and its fame invariably leads to The Beatles, the band that achieved global fame in the ’60s. Fans have numerous opportunities to get their fix with tours, exhibitions and landmarks aplenty.

The Beatles Story, again found on the Albert Dock, is the world’s largest permanent exhibition containing unique memorabilia which charts the ‘Fab Four’s’ rise to fame. You can also purchase skip-the-line tickets .

For those that way inclined, bus tours are available with stops at Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields which should whet the appetite for a visit to the Cavern Club, the venue that hosted The Beatles’ first-ever gig in 1961 and remains the spiritual home of the city’s music scene.

Additionally, one may consider taking in Liverpool Cathedral, the biggest in Britain and the fifth largest in Europe, The World Museum, which charts the history of… the world or for those interested in World War II, the award-winning U-boat Story in Birkenhead.

Liverpool is renowned for its nightlife with Ropewalks considered the liveliest area. It has a rival for its title in the form of The Baltic Triangle. Converted warehouses now throng with creative businesses, alternative cafés and bars alongside places to eat. Some of the more celebrated traditional pubs are also found here and in Roscoe Street, though Liverpool’s pub offerings are fairly widespread.

‘Scouse’ is the city’s traditional food which typically contains a form of meat, potatoes, vegetables and herbs. It’s usually served with crusty bread and/or red cabbage, with some places offering a vegetarian/vegan take. It also gave rise to the term ‘Scouser’, which describes someone who comes from Liverpool.

Cocky and confident, the stereotypical Mancunian has a special bond to their home – a bond and sense of spirit that came to the fore during the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of 2017.

The place that provided the spark for the Industrial Revolution, the mills have made way for museums, sporting facilities and a new Manchester reflected in the glut of hip, trendy shops, restaurants and bars. It’s simply a cool place to be right now.

Accessibility

In order to visit either city, one has to be able to get there. But not to worry, Manchester has transport links in abundance and getting around shouldn’t be a problem either.

It’s encircled by the M60 which connects to other major road routes. Expect a car journey from London to take approximately 4 and-a-half hours. Chorlton Street Coach station in the City centre is served by National Express and Megabus coach companies, again connecting Manchester with numerous towns and cities nationwide.

The three main train stations in Manchester (Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria) have direct rail links to major northern cities, Edinburgh , Birmingham and London, where a journey to or from the latter will take in the region of 2 to 3 hours.

These stations can be travelled between on a free bus, which also stops at shopping districts and business areas. View bus & train timetables here .

Unlike Liverpool, Manchester has its own tram system (Metrolink) with frequent services that cover popular tourist spots, alongside buses that serve the Greater Manchester area.

If flying into or out of the North West, then Manchester Airport, the third-largest in the UK, is likely to one’s arrival point. The airport connects to the city via its own regional railway station and Metrolink stop.

The streets of Manchester are navigable by foot with people employed as ‘City Hosts’ in the main shopping areas who are on hand to assist with queries one may have regarding public transport, site seeing or local events and anything else Manchester-related.

Tram in Manchester

In terms of finances, although potentially a bit more expensive overall, a trip to Manchester shouldn’t cost the Earth or any of the smaller planets.

Again, one should have no problem finding a suitable bed for the night, whatever the need. As in Liverpool, expect competition for rooms from football fans when the home teams, United and City, play.

Most people will find somewhere that can cater to their dietary requirements. Some mid-range restaurants and prices for alcohol may be slightly higher in Manchester than one may find for the equivalent in Liverpool.

Head to the Northern Quarter for Manchester’s biggest and arguably, the best blend of eateries. Independently run establishments have made their home here from traditional pubs to vegan fast food joints.

Be wary though, as some of the more popular venues may require a reservation. Housed in an Edwardian-age building in the city centre, the Corn Exchange offers Italian, Indian, Mexican and Vietnamese dining options to name but a few.

Manchester’s major museums and attractions are also free to enter with the option for donating or paying for additional activities.

Public transport can be made cheaper by purchasing the integrated System One travel Card, with numerous tariffs for travel using the bus, tram and train across the Greater Manchester region.

Things to do in Manchester

Any extended trip to Manchester will allow for some exposure to their influential and unique historical pasts. Manchester is widely considered the location that brought us the Industrial Revolution and this period is analysed in the Science and Industry Museum.

Located centrally, the museum is known for housing what’s believed to be the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station alongside a collection of steam engines and various forms of industrial machinery.

The exhibitions plot the change and development of technology over time and the role Manchester played. The museum will appeal to all age groups with demonstrations and interactive stands providing added entertainment.

On a bench in Sackville Park sits a statue dedicated to the brilliant mathematician Alan Turing. Famed for his work at Bletchley Park in helping to crack the German Naval Enigma code during World War II, Turing taught at the University of Manchester during the 1940s and ’50s.

As a gay man, which was illegal at the time, Turing was said to have taken his own life after eating a poisoned apple, which can be seen sitting in the statue’s right hand. The bitten apple, the logo of Apple Inc. is thought to be a tribute to Turing who is recognised as being the father of the computer age.

Manchester has much to offer the avid football fan being home to two of England’s biggest football clubs- Manchester United and Manchester City. City, once dubbed United’s ‘noisy neighbours’ have emerged from the shadows of their red rivals to become Premier League Champions.

Both clubs offer tours of their grounds (Old Trafford and The Etihad) with the usual stops (dressing rooms, pitch and dugout). For those who are, for whatever reason, of the red persuasion, there is the Manchester United Museum & Stadium Tour , tickets to which are valid for a year.

Similarly to Liverpool, tickets for games are tricky to get and need to be planned well in advance. Sign up to your club’s of choice membership base before your trip or look for buying opportunities at reputable resellers.

Inside Old Trafford - the home of Man U!

If you love football but couldn’t care less about United or City, then the National Football Museum could be the solution. The world’s biggest museum dedicated to the beautiful game looks at the sport from social, cultural and sporting perspectives. Highlights include memorabilia from the 1966 World Cup Final including the once-lost but now-found (thanks to a dog), Jules Rimet World Cup Trophy.

For other highlights try the People’s History Museum, which introduces and discusses Britain’s political past and the award-winning building that is the Lowry Art complex in Salford Quays.

Liverpool or Manchester: The Verdict

So which city is better to visit? Well, despite their rivalry on and off the football field, these are destinations that share much in common.

Both cities have emerged from troubling times and garnered a trendier, modern side that has hybridised with their commercial and industrial pasts.

With prices cheaper than London , but a food and drink scene to match, these icons of the North West offer the visitor much to see and do- a lot of it free and accessible by foot, should that umbrella hold out of course…

If Britain’s maritime past ‘floats your boat’ so to speak and one has a penchant for a good walk along a famous waterfront, then Liverpool would be the natural choice, particularly if passionate about the Beatles and/or Liverpool FC.

However, should one of Manchester’s Premier League Clubs be the subject of your calling, then Manchester might make a more ideal trip, with the added bonus of the National Football Museum being in town. Manchester’s ties to the Industrial Revolution will also make for an interesting, educational stay.

But, with only an hour or so between them along the M62, instead of trying to pick one of Liverpool or Manchester to visit, it might be more of a case of choosing which one to take in first.

Are you thinking of visiting either of these cities? Have any questions? Let us know in the comments below!

About Adrian Fisk

Adrian is a writer for The World Was Here First. He is a passionate world traveller and spends most of his free time travelling around his native England, jetting off to Europe and planning excursions further afield.

When visiting the City of Manchester remember that you visit two cities. The centre comprises both Manchester city centre and the adjoining City of Salford inner area. When in the city centre you might actually be in Salford. E.g. the 5 star city centre Lowry Hotel is on the Salford side of the River Irwell.

Manchester has much more to offer than Liverpool. As an inland port and the first industrial city it truly is unique.

No Manchester hasn’t more to offer than Liverpool. Beaches zoos safari parks. To name a few

Liverpool is a better experience. It is a beautiful city.

Manchester Cathedral

Located close to the city center and the River Irwell, Manchester Cathedral dates mostly from 1422 to 1506 and was raised to cathedral status in 1847. Known officially as the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St. Mary, St. Denys, and St. George, it's particularly popular among visitors for its attractive chapels on both sides of the nave and choir.

The cathedral was built between 1486 and 1508, and further additions and alterations were undertaken in almost every subsequent century. Of particular note are the choir stalls, which boast some of the most richly decorated misericords in the country.

Manchester Central Library

Literary buffs and lovers of the printed word are spoiled for choice when it comes to historic libraries in Manchester. In addition to being the home of Britain's oldest public library, Manchester is also home to two of the country's other most important libraries: the John Rylands Library and Manchester Central Library.

Founded in 1888, the John Rylands Research Institute and Library was established to further the cause of research in humanities, using as its foundation the broad collections of manuscripts and archival material belonging to the University of Manchester Library. Rated one of the top free things to do in Manchester , a visit to this spectacular neo-Gothic building is certainly worthwhile.

While not as old (it opened in 1934), Manchester Central Library is every bit as architecturally pleasing. Set overlooking St. Peter's Square, the design of this impressive domed structure, with its large columns, is reputedly based on the Pantheon in Rome. Grab some photos of its exterior before popping in for a look inside. Highlights include a number of attractive stained-glass windows, the ornate ceiling of the dome, as well as a number of interesting statues.

Address: 150 Deansgate, Manchester

National Football Museum

Another religious site worth visiting, St. Mary's Catholic Church is something of a well-kept secret in Manchester. But don't let the structure's rather plain exterior stop you from popping in for a look inside.

St. Mary's is one of the city's newer churches, built during the Industrial Revolution, and the interior reveals numerous fine Victorian carvings. Highlights include the marble high altar, statues of saints, and a unique Expressionist-style stations of the cross. Guided tours are available.

While there, visit the Free Trade Hall, opened in 1951. Editor's note: Manchester Town Hall is currently undergoing major interior and exterior renovations due for completion in 2024.

Manchester Town Hall

Allocate some time to also explore St. Peter's Square. This large public square is where you'll find the Manchester Cenotaph commemorating the city's war dead, as well as plenty of great opportunities to get in some people watching.

While there are enough fun things to do in Salford for those wanting to make a day trip out of it , those crunched for time would do well to visit one or two attractions in this pleasant university town. The Salford Quays, usually referred to simply as "The Quays," should definitely top your list.

An easy 25-minute, five-kilometer ride away from Manchester city center by public transit, this much revitalized area straddles the banks of the city's ship canal and is a delight to explore on foot.

In addition to such popular attractions as the Imperial War Museum North and Old Trafford, home to Manchester United Football Club, you'll find the Lowry Arts Centre. Dedicated to the life and work of local artist L.S. Lowry, it contains numerous unique pieces, as well as a performing arts center.

Heaton Park

Covering some 600 acres, Heaton Park is the biggest park in Greater Manchester and one of the largest municipal parks in Europe. Heaton Hall , built in 1772, lies in the very heart of the park and although not all of it is open to the public, it remains an impressive sight.

Some buildings, such as the charming Orangery, are open seasonly to the public, so check the official website for closures. The park has been extensively restored and retains many of its original buildings and vistas.

Sports enthusiasts will enjoy its 18-hole golf course, driving range, mini putt, and tennis courts, while families can explore the boating lake, animal farm, woodlands, ornamental gardens, observatory, and adventure playground. There's even a volunteer-run tramway and museum.

Address: Middleton Road, Manchester

Fletcher Moss Botanical Garden

Also worth visiting is Fletcher Moss Park . Founded in 1917, this large green space, part botanical garden and part wildlife habitat, is an engaging contrast to the busy city center. There are numerous walking trails on the property, as well as regular guided "health" walks.

Popular things to do here include enjoying a stroll or picnic, or opting for more strenuous activities, such as tennis, rugby, or football. There's also a pleasant café located within the grounds. Dogs are welcome.

Address: 18 Stenner Lane, Didsbury, Manchester

Platt Hall: Gallery of Costume

Platt Hall , an elegant Georgian house built in 1764 and now part of the Manchester Art Gallery, presents an excellent overview of English fashion and costume from 1600 to the present day. It is perhaps the only collection to rival London's Victoria and Albert Museum .

Strengths of the museum include its many examples of everyday dress, with the Gallery of Costume containing one of the largest collections of costumes and accessories in Britain.

Location: Platt Hall, Fallowfiield, Manchester

University of Manchester

Manchester's educational precinct, encompassing the University of Manchester , includes a variety of institutes and halls of residence.

Opened in 1851, the university can claim three Nobel prizewinners: Ernest Rutherford (1871-1939), who laid the foundations of modern atomic physics; physician James Chadwick, who in 1932 proved the existence of the neutron; and Sir John Cockcroft (1897-1967), one of the leading physicists in British and Canadian atomic research.

Housed in the university, the Whitworth Art Gallery is famous for its collections of British watercolors, drawings, prints, modern art, and sculpture, along with the largest textile and wallpaper collections outside London. Also close by is the Manchester Museum, with its extensive scientific collections and Egyptian exhibits.

Victoria Baths, Manchester

Known to locals as Manchester's "Water Palace," the Victoria Baths are well worth a visit. The building is a perfectly preserved example of a Victorian-era bath, a feature once relatively common in many large urban areas in bygone days.

Although not unlike modern public swimming pools, it was built in 1986 and is unique for the change facilities that line the pool's perimeter. Also noteworthy is the ornate steelwork that holds the structure up.

Open seasonally from April through to November, it can be toured and makes for a pleasant outing. Be sure to check the official website for dates and availability. The facility also serves as a venue for concerts and movies, as well as special family events. A tea shop and gift shop are located on-site.

Address: Hathersage Road, Manchester

Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester

A visit to the Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester is a fun activity for all ages. Located in the city's Cheetham Hill area, this impressive collection of vintage transportation consists of over 80 buses, many of them still working. Other historic modes of transport housed here include an original city tram dating from 1901, as well as old trolleybuses.

Displays describe not just the vehicles, but also deal with the development and evolution of public transit in Manchester. A quaint tearoom is located on the premises, as is a gift shop.

Address: Boyle Street, Cheetham Hill, Manchester

As in any big city, it's hard to find a hotel that is near all the main attractions. But many of Manchester's points of interest at least cluster in three areas: the Urban Heritage Park and museum complex on Liverpool Road in the Castlefield neighborhood; the shopping district between King Street and the cathedral; and Chinatown to the south, where you'll find the Manchester Art Gallery. There’s no way we were starting this list with anywhere else. Blackpool holds a special place in the heart of many a working class Brit that, over the years, has gained fond memories of long, illuminated tram trips, cruel donkey rides and soggy sandy chips atop the pier. It’s the epitome of British summer time, and is very easy to get to from Manchester for a nostalgic day out.

There wasn’t a year that passed by without us making the hour round trip to the seaside destination, and Blackpool’s famous pleasure beach was always at the top of our list. The theme park attracts thousands of visitors each year seeking thrills on the iconic The Big One, Grand National, or steel shuttle coaster, Revolution, or if you don’t class yourself as a daredevil, you can always opt to hold everyone’s bags.

The seaside town is also complete with a myriad of cracking pubs, which you’ll often catch a drag act or karaoke session in at whatever time of day – and the town’s Latin America Las Iguanas restaurant sits directly below Blackpool Tower, so drink enough Pina Coladas and you could be in Paris.

One of the UK’s most quaint and historic cities, Chester makes for an informative but very enjoyable trip out of Manchester. Complete with city walls and the largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, there’s plenty to see and do, as you’ll find yourself standing exactly where Roman legionaries once marched to war.

Its rows, which now house an abundance of independent and more recognised stores, also make for a unique shopping experience as the district is distinguished by 2-level covered arcades, and Tudor-style half timber buildings. There’s also an amazing range of pubs, loads of traditional boozers and some mint places to grab a bit of grub, including Shrub and Telford’s Warehouse .

Marsden is truly one of West Yorkshire’s hidden gems. With peaks, canals, valleys and reservoirs, as well as a burgeoning, up and coming food scene, the village has become a must-visit for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, lace up the walking boots and try some award-winning grub.

The Yorkshire village is also home to BBC’s timeless ‘ Last Of The Summer Wine ’ series, and, more recently, the BBC Three zombie drama ‘ In The Flesh ’. Namely for its picturesque setting, the inspiring endless landscape makes it a great popular with filmmakers, artists and creatives alike as its a total retreat from reality that’s complete with a rich, cultural heritage.

A destination that may not automatically spring to mind when planning your next day trip, Buxton is a town full of character that sits right on the edge of the Peak District. Known for being a ‘thermal spa town’ and housing the UK’s oldest National Park which spans stunning ornamental gardens and some incredible Georgian and Victorian architecture, you should book a relaxing getaway to the town as soon as possible!

The Pavilion Gardens are great for a romantic stroll, and the Opera House hosts a programme of one-off, world-class performances from a range of established artists, comedians and theatre companies. If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, though, Buxton also has Go Ape! which will have you wading through the trees like a true wild beast (complete with a rather unsightly harness-induced camel toe).

The Pennines

There’s nowhere quite like rolling Northern hills of The Pennines, and, lucky for us, the destination is only a short journey away from Manchester. Get the train from Victoria to Greenfield and you’ll find yourself in a lovely area of the world, with stunning views, loads of greenery and plenty of sheep.

There’s Uppermill , Delph , Denshaw and Dobcross in the area, too, where you’ll be greeted with some cracking old school boozers, some great walks and the odd fantastic restaurant.

We’re pretty big fans of The Old Bell Inn in Delph, which is a hotel, brasserie and bar with an insane collection of over 600 gins! It’s absolutely perfect for a winter walk, but make sure you also check out the The Bank’s award-winning Sunday Roast and endless list of cocktails.

Hebden Bridge

Somewhere you’d expect to be overrun with pensioners, ancient butchers, one post office and a catholic church is actually one of the best day trips to book yourself out of Manchester. Hebden Bridge is great for walkers, and one of the town’s most exciting trails will take you past Stoodley Pike, ending up at one of the UK’s highest beaches in Todmorden, Gaddings Dam . Providing gorgeous 360º views and one of the best wild swimming spots you’ll find, Gaddings Dam has continued to become hugely popular, especially in the summer months. Back on dry land, though, there’s plenty of arts and crafts shops in the heart of the town, as well as a mint veggie brunch spot, Leila’s Kitchen and award-winning Greek and Mediterranean retreat, Aya Sophia where you’ll find traditional cuisine and some of the best cocktails in town.

Jodrell Bank & Tatton Park

We’ve combined these two together as they aren’t too far from each other and, when paired, make for a cracking day out. Home of music, science and innovation, Jodrell Bank is a great place for an educational jaunt, especially if you have kids in tow as there’s plenty to keep them occupied, including the Lovell Telescope and the Pavilions which offer state-of-the-art exhibitions for all the family. Once you’re finished there, head on over to Tatton Park , which is home to a massive Neo-Classical stately home, award-winning gardens, a deer park with real deer and an actual working farm. You can also pre-ordered picnics full of homemade sandwiches and cakes to enjoy out on the grass during the warmer months.

Delamere Forest

Located over in Cheshire, Delamere Forest gives you a chance to be at one with nature without having to spend your evening in a cramped pop-up tent complete with she-wee. The landscape is truly breathtaking with plenty of activities to keep you busy during a full day of exploring. The forest sits very close to the town of Frodsham, which is great to stop off for some lunch and a couple of bevs after exhausting yourself with a lengthy walk. Make sure you factor Kash 22 into your day, a pub full of character that often hosts a regular calendar of live music and karaoke. The stage is yours!

Blasphemy, I hear you cry. But Liverpool is mint, and I’m happy to challenge anyone who doesn’t agree with me on that one. There’s absolutely loads to do here, from the coveted Magical Mystery Tour to the British Music Experience Museum that’s complete with Marc Bolan’s outlandish outfits and even Cilla Black’s frocks, you won’t be bored. If the sun’s out in the city, Liverpool has loads of incredible beer gardens and terraces, head on over to Bold Street and take a waltz around there, or get your drinking hat on and head to Mathew Street for a pretty enjoyable session. There’s loads more places, but I just don’t have the space. However, if the heavens have opened, get yourself to Baltic Market – a huge street food and drink venue that sees burgers, vietnamese cuisine, greek dishes and everything in between make up its menu.

Hollingworth Lake

If water sports are your thing, Hollingworth Lake is the place to be. Many Mancs might already be familiar with the school trip destination, which allows visitors to partake in windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, sailing and rowing. There’s a couple of decent pubs on the shoreline of the lake, with plenty cosy seating, too. There’s a bike trail that runs past the lake, which will no doubt get you a few chipper ‘hellos’ from those cycling through the area, but if you’re also a keen rider yourself, pop your bike in the car before you head down. Don’t forget your picnic either, as there’s loads of beauty spots to enjoy a disappointing ham and cheese butty.

Knowsley Safari Park

Everyone loves a zoo, especially one that allows you to drive through the enclosures and get up close and personal with a load of monkeys. Apart from your Dad, though, who won’t stop going on about the scratches on the paintwork of his precious Corsa for months after. Knowsley Safari Park also offers a trail on foot, where you’ll get a glimpse into the lives of sea lions, meerkats, giraffes, and the incredible tiger trail and a huge amusement park for kids with a carousel, roundabout and all the fun of the fair! There’s places to fuel your fun as well, with an outdoor food court and a restaurant and grill also making up the diverse offerings.

Home of the Brontë sisters, anyone with a love for the bleak landscapes and cruel beauty of Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre should definitely give this place a try. At the top of the hill is the Brontë Parsonage Museum , where the brilliant staff will take pleasure in showing you around their house and giving you all the information you could ever need on these literary legends.

On top of that, there’s some corking pubs and food establishments, of which we found that some sort of elaborate ‘crawl’ is the best way to get the most out of the town. There’s also some great little antique shops too, which sell some random goodies – perfect for an afternoon mooch.

places to visit in manchester reddit

The Lake District

A little further out of Manchester, The Lake District is one of those places you could never get bored of. Complete with beautiful landscapes, cosy pubs, quaint little shops and some incredibly fancy hotels if you really want to treat yourself. Its a vast part of the world, so personally we would recommend heading on over to Bowness-on-Windermere, right on the banks of the lake where you can get a lovely little boat which will take you on the water and over to other imaginatively named towns such as Ambleside or Lakeside. In Bowness itself, there is a stunning Garden Terrace at The Belsfield Hotel which overlooks the lake, perfect for a few drinks and some excellent food in the sun. I would also highly recommend The Albert Pub , run by Stockport’s Robinsons Brewery – top boozer and they sell Ginger Tom which is amazing.

places to visit in manchester reddit

Macclesfield

Another destination not too far at all from Manchester city centre, Macclesfied will take you around 20 minutes to get to and, once you’re there, you’ll be spoilt for choice for things to do. Once home to Joy Division frontman, Ian Curtis, you can visit where he lived on 77 Barton Street or marvel at the new mural that was erected in the town centre this year. Aside from this, Macclesfield is home to its very own Mackie Mayor-style food hub, Picturedrome Macclesfield and loads of mint bars, which range from traditional inns to more upmarket cocktail bars. If you’re staying over, get up to Tegg’s Nose Country Park the next day for a well-needed detox.

Finally, another beach to round off the list, Southport is only an hours train journey away from Manchester and is great for a short break or staycation. With 22 miles of coastline to explore, you’ll be surrounded by natural beauty and the charm of a traditional seaside town with a number of award-winning restaurants and bars to choose from, too. Southport Market is also an incredible space, complete with Greek, Canadian, Mexican, Italian and more from ten local, independent traders who cover a variety of cuisines from around the world, and are joined by a stunning feature bar.

Manchester, UK, April 11, 2017: People are walking in the Gay village alongside Canal street in Manchester, England

Manchester is a famously queer-friendly city especially the village around Canal Street trabantos / Getty Images

Mancunians are fiercely proud of their city. And rightly so as the ever-growing metropolis houses an impressive collection of attractions, with options to appease even the most cultured visitors.

It’s not just football and great music, either. Awesome art galleries, museums with free entry and all manner of festivals are possible contenders for your itinerary. Not sure where to start? Here’s just a snapshot of the best things to do in Manchester.

1. Go to a gig

The Madchester years may be over and the Haçienda long gone (or, rather, remodeled as a block of flats), but Manchester ’s musical spirit remains very much alive. The city has nurtured numerous bands over the years and still plays host to countless live music venues.

Attending a gig is easily one of the best things to do in Manchester at night. Band on the Wall and the Deaf Institute showcase an eclectic mix of up-and-coming acts, while the MEN Arena is the domain of globally renowned superstars. You could also treat your ears to free live jazz at friendly neighborhood bar Matt and Phreds or listen to classical masterpieces courtesy of the Hallé Orchestra at Bridgewater Hall .

Detour: The Science and Industry Museum's Turn It Up: The power of music exhibit lets visitors get hands-on with music making, with displays that include odd and groundbreaking instruments and a space to create your own masterpiece.

2. Explore the Northern Quarter

Manchester’s hippest neighborhood sits a stone’s throw from Piccadilly Gardens and offers numerous refreshing alternatives to the chain cafes and high street stores of nearby Market Street.

As well as being adorned with thought-provoking street art, the Northern Quarter’s red brick buildings are filled with vintage clothing shops, indie record stores and quirky themed bars.

Some of the best restaurants in Manchester can be found here, too. Head to Northern Soul Grilled Cheese for a cheap and indulgently cheesy lunch. You could also join the queue for a table at Aussie-run brunch spot, Federal , where great coffee is served alongside plates piled high with smashed avocado, grilled halloumi and freshly-baked sourdough toast.

Local tip: With lots of boutique hotels and situated in a convenient location, the Northern Quarter is also a good place to stay in Manchester.

An Arabic family, a father and son visiting the The National Football Museum - using interactive exhibits about the game of soccer and its history.

3. Indulge your inner football fan

Manchester is the home of not one, but two legendary football teams. Whether your loyalties lie with Manchester City or Manchester United , you’ll find much to entertain you at the National Football Museum . Tucked behind the cathedral, it’s the biggest museum of its kind and one of the most popular attractions in Manchester.

Local Tip: Rather see a ball being kicked across the pitch? The Premier League season kicks off in early September, with matches hosted at both the Etihad Stadium and Old Trafford. Pick up tickets for as little as £20 or go inside Old Trafford during a private stadium tour.

4. Tick off some museums

There’s no shortage of ways to spend a day in Manchester. With no fewer than ten museums located within the city limits, it’s an excellent place to expand your knowledge on a range of different subjects.

Learn about the Suffragette Movement at the Pankhurst Centre or uncover the city’s natural history at the Manchester Museum . The Imperial War Museum North in Salford Quays is as educational and evocative as its London counterpart.

Visiting with kids? The Science and Industry Museum is hands down one of the best things to do in Manchester as a family. It’s lodged inside the oldest railway terminus in the world and has some brilliant interactive exhibits, including astronaut virtual reality experiences for wannabe space explorers.

A couple walking along the balconies past book stacks in the galleries in the historic Reading Room in John Rylands Library, part of the University of Manchester.

5. John Rylands Library

The John Rylands Library – with its Gothic facade and dramatic interiors that wouldn’t look out of place in a Sherlock Holmes mystery – is more than just a giant storehouse for rare books. It’s stood on the same spot on Deansgate since the 1890s and is probably the city’s most impressive heritage site.

A visit to the library is one of the best things to do in Manchester, whether you’re a certified bookworm or not. Entry is free and it’ll take you less than an hour to admire its wood-paneled reading rooms, sweeping stone staircases and glass cases filled with fading, antique papyrus.

6. Eat your way around the city

If you take away one piece of advice, let it be this: always come to Manchester with an appetite. The city has some serious culinary credentials, spanning Michelin-starred fine dining to vegan-friendly fast food. Mouth-watering global cuisine is always on the menu, too.

Ancoats (the Northern Quarter’s equally cool neighbor) is Manchester’s unofficial Little Italy and where you’ll be able to gorge on stonebaked pizza and other carb-heavy delights. For fragrant ramen and delectable dim sum, the brightly decorated restaurants of Chinatown are your best bet.

Local Tip: Searching for a cozy Sunday lunch spot? Book a table at Sam’s Chop House . It’s one of the best pubs in Manchester and still has the same moody Victorian decor as it did when it opened in 1868.

7. Check out the city’s craft beer scene

Manchester is swiftly catching up with the capital when it comes to craft beer. A good chunk of its breweries (many of them with onsite bars) lie a short walk from Manchester Piccadilly station. This includes trendy Cloudwater Brewing Co and the slightly more rustic Alphabet Brewing Company.

Detour: Prefer a G&T? The Manchester Gin distillery behind the Odeon Great Northern offers terrific tasting tours.

8. Hit up a market

Sucker for a good market? Manchester has plenty. Foodies will be thoroughly satisfied with the treats on offer at Altrincham Market and Mackie Mayor in the Northern Quarter. If it's vintage treasures you’re seeking, make a beeline for eclectic Afflecks on Church Street. There’s also the Didsbury Maker’s Market – an emporium of locally made gifts and crafts – which sets up shop just off Burton Road on the last Sunday of every month.

Cold early spring evening at Salford Quays, Manchester. On the foot bridge by MediaCity UK looking towards the Imperial War Museum North.

9. Salford Quays

Looking for things to do outside Manchester City Center? Hop on the tram and head for Salford Quays. The modern waterfront district is on the site of the former Manchester Docks and serves as the home of the BBC and ITV in the North. You’ll spot their studio buildings in the aptly named MediaCityUK .

Directly opposite is The Quays, a shopping, dining and entertainment complex. Within it is the Lowry , one of the top-performing arts centers in the region, and Salford Water Sports Centre where you can hire paddleboards or kayaks to explore the surrounding canals.

10. Attend one of Manchester’s many festivals

No matter the season , there’s bound to be a festival to take your fancy. Mancunians love to celebrate, whether that’s by heading en masse to Heaton Park for the Parklife music festival or by lining the streets of the Gay Village for the annual Pride parade.

You could also enjoy avant-garde film screenings and immersive performance art at the biannual Manchester International Festival or join in with the Lunar New Year festivities in Manchester’s Chinatown in early February.

People Swimming in the Men's First Class Pool at Victoria Baths in Manchester, which is having an open swim day to raise funds for restoration work

11. Take a dip at Victoria Baths

This early Edwardian swimming pool turned cultural events venue is worth trekking up Oxford Road for. Victoria Baths first opened in 1906, and it’s managed to retain its period beauty. Original tiles cover the walls of the entrance hall, while powder blue changing cubicles with red and white striped curtains line the edge of the female baths.

The long-term goal is to refurbish it as a public pool and Turkish bath. For now, though, Victoria Baths is open for tours between March and September.

Local tip: Various events are held throughout the year too, including the Vintage Home Show in June and a pop-up festive cinema in December.

12. Embark on an art-themed tour of the city

Art fanatics will be in their element in Manchester. The Whitworth Art Gallery ’s collections are vast and include prints by Renoir and Cezanne, as well as a room dedicated entirely to wonderfully colorful wallpaper.

Back in the city center, Manchester Art Gallery is a haven for fine art aficionados and usually has a fantastic temporary modern art exhibition. You could also browse bold works with hefty price tags at Castle Fine Art Gallery on King Street.

Local tip: After a unique date idea? Leisurely uncovering the street art of the Northern Quarter and Ancoats – preferably with a coffee in hand – is one of our top things to do in Manchester as a couple.

Updated: 16th May 2018

As we slowly lifted the little wooden roof of their hive home, the familiar buzz of the worker bee started sounding. On the rooftop of the Print Works, an old printing factory now turned entertainment hub, a burly guy with a tender touch for the little-striped creatures was sharing his Manchester with us. I’d soon realise it wasn’t just our honey-making friends that were buzzing, though; the whole city has an evolving electric vibe that’s spot on for a little mini-break.

Manchester

Often overshadowed as a weekend getaway by the likes of London, it’s actually an excellent alternative, although it remains a relatively underrated city in Europe . You’ll never see all of London in a few days, but relatively compact Manchester, with its well-connected airport, trams and free city-centre buses, is a viable standalone or gateway-getaway to England.

An abundance of free museums, theatre options, capital-rivalling cafes, an ever-evolving art scene and music running through the city like the canals that serve it all adds up to a criss-cross of culture, culinary quirks and northern hospitality. Booze, Football, Shopping, Oasis; these are the old words I would have used to describe Manchester. However, it’s safe to say that has changed after a weekend in this buzzing metropolis.

Mackie Mayor

For the foodie

As the third biggest city in the UK, Manchester surprisingly doesn’t have any Michelin stars, but that’s not to say the city is all pies and gravy (which they do damn well). For those who travel for food, you’ve got a mix of Instagrammable, mouth-watering restaurants and cafes to treat yourself with here.

Wood Restaurant

Tucking into a surprisingly great value, the blind five-course tasting menu at Wood, a bright, airy space with soothing blue booths opened by Masterchefs winner Simon Wood, I’d say it’s not long until this growing gourmet destination graces the pages of the high-brow foodie bible. From sweet and sour soups and tender slow-cooked meat joints to the light and creamy white chocolate dessert, the meal was spot on for each of the five courses.

Wood Restaurant

Across the city, a Grade 2 listed building and a former meat market have been converted into a high-ceiling, trendy, bustling food hall.  Mackie Mayor , where you can cram your table with anything from Tacos to Tapas available at the various stalls is another gem in the city and serves up a mean mix of booze and food for all palates from early morning until late evening.

Retro coffee shops (such as  Grindsmiths  on Deansgate) and creative, music-loving independent restaurants (check out  The Deaf Institute ) happily seem to be in abundance, debunking the chain culture taking over the rest of the country.

For the architecture lovers

The humble worker-bee is the symbol of Manchester. A city of trade, ships and hard labour, the honey-coloured stone buildings of Manchester were once lost to the black soot that caked them from the factories. As pressure washers restore every corner of this city to its former grandeur, there is some seriously impressive architecture to admire, and the town hall should be your first port of call after stepping off one of the gliding yellow trams just outside.

Manchester Town Hall

The  John Rylands Library  has been on my hit list for years, and the vaulted ceilings above stone glass windows didn’t disappoint. The equally ornate Town Hall is worthy of any Instagram feed, while across in Salford Quays, which is actually a different city, the modern, glowing glass structure of BBC’s new home, Media City, reflects like a spaceship against the canal.

Manchester

For the history buffs

Tim Peake’s space shuttle that had brought him back to earth took pride of place in the entrance to the  Museum of Science and Industry , one of the city’s many free, and well-curated, attractions. With plenty of interactive displays, I’m pretty confident this would be an ideal spot on a rainy day, especially if you have kids to keep entertained.

Manchester Museums

‘Deeds not words’ is the quote that greets you at  The Pankhurst Centre , a working community centre and the birthplace of the Suffragette movement. Beyond the incredible work this women’s centre provides in the modern day, the small museum is dedicated to the Votes for Women movement led by Emmeline Pankhurst, of which the centre is named for.

On a year celebrating such an important anniversary of achieving another step towards equality, yet globally seeming tainted as we hear such awful stories of lack of acceptance, it was a sobering walk down history to learn more about the Suffragette campaign that I ashamedly didn’t know much about. Entrance is free, like many of Manchester’s museums, but donations to continue to support the centre are always welcome.

Pankhurst Centre

Just along the street sits another home that nods towards Manchester history, Elizabeth Gaskell . This home-turned-museum is dedicated to the great 19th-century author whose works include North and South and the well-known Cranford. The restored period property allows a look into the more lavish side of Manchester for those who weren’t grafting hard in the factories and docks and often hosts additional book-focused events alongside its normal visiting hours.

For the cultured early evening

When the sun sets, the city really kicks into gear. You could grab the squad for a game of bowling at  DogBowl , a bar-come-bowling alley.

For some evening entertainment, slip into one of the many theatres to watch a musical or an immersive play at the  Royal Exchange , a circular theatre hosting classics and contemporaries. Manchester has a pumping year-round  event calendar  well worth checking out for something a little different. On my last visit, I was sipping Gin at renovated Victoria Baths, and these events often allow you access to lesser-seen venues in the city.

Royal Exchange

For the mad one

One of Manchester’s strengths lies in its diversity, from cat cafes to Canal Street, the famous LGBTQ+ quarter, and every flavour of restaurants from around the world. The city opens its arms to one and all. It reminded me of what I loved and gave me pride in Britain, something I needed as the Brexit debacle rambles on.

Whatever kind of music or nightlife you are into, Manchester is gonna deliver. With live music venues, pub entertainment, and world-class clubs, this city won’t disappoint you right through to the early hours. As one of the most gay-friendly cities in Europe , it really has venues, clubs and bars for all.

For the local look

‘Everyone in the city was in shock or knew someone… it was an awful time. But, it’s not what Manchester should be defined by’ called back John, my black cab driver who was giving me a guided tour of his home city and recalling the heinous bombing that had shocked the city just over a year ago.

Black Cab Tour

Touring the city by black cab, was two hours well spent. Roman walls to out-of-town Oasis fan spots were great stops, but the chat and insight from the front seat are what makes it. The best way to dig a little deeper into a destination as an outsider is through the eyes of a local. The chance for a live Q&A with a man who had likely seen it all while doing his rounds provided a much better insight into the ‘real Manchester’ than any visiting blogger  (hey there!)  is going to give online. Manchester is truly a city of stories: from steelwork to the suffragettes, it has been shaped by the spirit of its people, and the northern hospitality keeps that spirit alive. From the life-story sharing with the barber-come-DJ who gave me a trim in the urban-cool northern quarter to the addictive laugh of the beaming bar-tender serving up Bavarian beers and serious banter at the surprisingly lovable Albert Schloss German Bar, the city’s best asset for sure, is its people.

Manchester

For the pampered stay

One of the most iconic hotels in Manchester is  The Midland , with its imposing exterior this grand building dates back to 1903 and has hosted its fair share of names over the years. A plaque dedicated to being where Rolls met Royce of the car fame greets you as you step off the street into the high-ceiling lobby with polished floors.

To the left, a cosy bar area with a towering centre-piece is the perfect place to knock back a few pre-dinner cocktails and the tranquil spa, with light hues of blues and whites, looked the perfect place to spend a day when the grey skies and rains descend.

The rooms were spacious and well-maintained, and sticking with Manchester’s love for personality, booking into such an iconic venue is the way to go when visiting the city.

The Midland Hotel

On my last evening in Manchester, I stumbled into my umpteenth hidden gem of a pub down a little side street (the rumours about Manchestenians liking a few bevvies? All true) to sink another pint with my Dad.

Nursing a hangover and flying through the green hills of the English countryside to London the next morning, it’s a quick and easy two-hour train journey to the capital that somehow I had never taken before in all my time as a Londoner.

Manchester might not have the iconic skyline of the capital, the culinary charm of Paris or the sunshine of Barcelona, but what it does have is a soul, and for an epic city-break weekend, that is exactly what you need.

For years, outsiders have been getting it so wrong about Manchester.  The question isn’t United or City: the real question is when are you making a bee-line (naf pun intended) to this buzzing city?

A salvaged historic square tucked into the busy shopping district, Shambles Square is a quaint little corner of Manchester. The square is centered on The Old Wellington Inn, which was built in the year 1552 (and is the birthplace of English poet John Byrom).

The Old Wellington Inn, a half-timbered Tudor house, is flanked by two other historic buildings. The Mitre Hotel (dating to 1815) and Sinclair’s Oysters Bar (built in 1807 – and selling oysters since 1845).

Interesting Fact: The buildings on Shambles Square are not in their original location. They were dismantled, moved and rebuilt in 1999 to accommodate for the expansion of the mall.

#4 Shopping in Manchester, UK

New Cathedral Street, Shopping in Manchester, UK

Built in the 1970s (and renovated several times since), the Arndale Center is one of the best shopping areas in Manchester (and also one of the largest city-center shopping malls in all of Europe).

Hosting recognizable brand retailers, departments stores (Selfridges is not to be missed), and a highly rated eateries, the area has something for everyone.

Controversy has surrounded the property’s size and style over the years, but today is seems most are happily moving on with plenty of retail therapy.

#5 Royal Exchange Building and Theatre

Entrance to Royal Exchange Building and Theatre, Manchester, UK

Built in the 1860s, the Royal Exchange was the center of trade for Manchester’s cotton industry. Once ranked as the largest trading hall in England, the Manchester Royal Exchange Building currently operates as a shopping center and theater.

The Royal Exchange Theatre was opened in 1973 and features a circular style stage that is completely surrounded by seats. One of the interesting things to do Manchester, UK is to attend a performance.

#6 Deansgate Shopping Street and Barton Arcade

Shops at Barton Arcade, Manchester, UK

Even if you are not interested in shopping in Manchester, it is worth spending a little bit of time strolling along Deansgate. A thoroughfare in the city since Roman times, Deansgate is a north-south route through downtown that extends more than a mile.

A worthwhile detour off Deansgate is the historic Barton Arcade. The Victorian arcade, which was built in 1871, features glass and iron construction.

Top Tip: A few other places to seek out in the vicinity are the 18th-century St. Ann’s Church, Parsonage Gardens and Castle Fine Art Gallery on King Street.

#7 John Rylands Library

Interior of John Rylands Library, Manchester, UK

The next stop on your Itinerary for One Day in Manchester is the John Rylands Research Institute and Library. Opened to the public in 1900, the library hosts an extensive collection of books, letters and manuscripts – and the design is utterly exquisite.

The library was established by Enriqueta Rylands in her husband’s memory – and since 1972, it has been part of the University of Manchester. The Historic Reading Room, which resembles a church, is a must-see Manchester attraction.

The library is free to enter.

Top Travel Tip: While at the John Rylands Library, pop into the ground floor toilets – which are original and unchanged since 1900.

#8 Abraham Lincoln Statue and Manchester Peace Garden

View of the Manchester Peace Garden and Lincoln Statue, England, UK

Not many Manchester visitors know that there is a connection between the City of Manchester and Abraham Lincoln. Yet, it’s a telling story of the history of the city and, today, a towering statue of Lincoln graces the Peace Garden in a hidden courtyard (aptly called Lincoln Square).

The link between the city and the US President can be traced to cotton. By the 1860s, Manchester was thriving on the cotton industry – turning the raw material from the USA into woven cloth. When cotton from the southern states faced an embargo due to their use of slave labor, workers in Manchester suffered.

However, rather than supporting the US Confederacy (in an effort to continue business), they turned their support to Lincoln and the abolishment of slavery.

In January of 1863 – two years before slavery was abolished in America – Lincoln wrote a letter to the working men of Manchester, thanking them for their support. Portions of the letter are inscribed at the base of the statue.

Pro Tip: Two nearby sights to seek out are the St. Mary’s RC Church (which was built in 1794 and stands today as Manchester’s oldest Catholic church) and the Frederic Chopin Piano statue on Deansgate.

#9 People’s History Museum

Display at the People’s History Museum, Manchester, UK

Housed in a former hydraulic pumping station, the People’s History Museum in Manchester shares the stories of working people in the United Kingdom.

Covering political topics that span 200 years, such as worker’s rights, trade unions and the suffrage movement, the exhibits are engaging and well-displayed.

The museum is free to enter.

Travel Tip: If you are planning to visit Manchester in one day, you will not likely have time to visit all of the museums listed in our itinerary. We recommend choosing which museums to enter based on your personal interests.

#10 Manchester Bridges and the River Irwell

View of Manchester Bridges and the River Irwell, UK

The Irwell River is a tributary that defines the boundary between Manchester and Salford. The narrow river is lined with historic buildings and is crossed by numerous bridges, making it one of the picturesque places in Manchester.

Two of the bridges that cross the river are located just behind the People’s History Museum: Albert Bridge and Irwell Footpath.

Travel Tip: For the best views, cross over Albert first and then cross back at the Irwell Pedestrian Bridge.

#11 Iconic Manchester Architecture on Quay Street

Buildings on Quay Street, Manchester, UK

During your one day in Manchester, England, it would be impossible not to notice the mishmash of architectural styles that decorate the landscape. Warehouses from the Industrial Revolution, Georgian gems and stylish Art Deco buildings all line the streets of Manchester.

Quay Street, in particular, hosts a fascinating array of design styles – from the Classical Opera House (built in 1912) to the Art Deco Sunlight House (dating to 1932).

Great Northern Railway Company’s Goods Warehouse, Manchester, England, UK

The Great Northern Railway Company’s Goods Warehouse is a massive brick structure that was completed in 1899 and is now a popular entertainment and shopping complex.

Pro Travel Tip: At this point in your Manchester One Day Trip, you are probably getting hungry for lunch. There are numerous eateries within the vicinity of the Quay Street and Deansgate intersection. For a quick (and classic) British lunch, pop into Pieminister for a savory pie (Moo and Blue is our favorite!). Eat it there or – if the weather is nice – get it to-go and dine al fresco in St. John’s Gardens.

#12 Science and Industry Museum Manchester

Entrance to the Science + Industry Museum Manchester, UK

The Science and Industry Museum is a 1-Day in Manchester must-see sight! An airy museum (located in a former train station), it features displays on innovation, as well as interactive science exhibits.

One of the best exhibits is the massive cotton display, which details the Manchester textile industry. The upper level is dedicated to science and features fun and challenging tasks that are backed by scientific information.

Displays at the Science and Industry Museum Manchester, UK

The museum is free to visit and guests could easily spend a few hours here!

Travel Tip: The museum also hosts special talks (which are free) and special exhibitions (which cost a nominal fee). Inquire at the main desk about what events are taking place during your visit.

#13 Castlefield District

View from the Manchester Castlefield District, England, UK

The origins of Manchester can be traced to the Castlefield District, as it was the site of the Mancunium Roman Fort in the 1st century AD. Parts of the Roman granary and fort are preserved, but they aren’t the only reason to visit the conservation area.

In addition to the ancient ruins, Castlefield features other historic highlights. The Bridgewater Canal was built in 1764 and served as the first industrial canal in the world. The Castlefield Viaduct – a 1,000-foot-long elevated railway – dates to 1892 and has recently been converted into an urban outdoor space .

View of the The Castlefield Viaduct, Manchester, UK

The Rochdale Canal was linked to the Castlefield Basin in early 1800s – and historic brick warehouses still line the waterways.

Top Travel Tip: Hop on the Rochdale Canal Tow Path to the west of Deansgate Tunnel ( map ) and walk east along the canal to Oxford Road. If you are lucky you may catch the long, narrow boats navigating the locks.

#14 Oxford Road

Kimpton Tower, Oxford Road, Manchester, UK

From the city center, Oxford Road leads south, passing right through the humming University District. The area is home to Manchester University, Manchester Metropolitan University and the Royal Northern College of Music (or RNCM). Plus, the street is lined with heaps of music venues, eateries and the city’s top museum, The Manchester Museum (which we discuss next on our list of Things To Do Manchester).

The street features opulent architecture (like the red-brick Kimpton Clocktower that opened in 1890 as the Refuge Assurance Company) and historic gems (like the Grosvenor Picture Palace; now The Footage).

Top Tip: The Manchester Curry Mile – a stretch of street dedicated to Indian food and shops – sits on the south end of Oxford Road, where the name changes to Wilmslow Road.

#15 Manchester Museum

Galleries at the Manchester Museum, UK

Hosting an incredible collection of exhibits from around the world, the Manchester Museum is a fascinating place to visit. Run by The University of Manchester, it has been in operation for more than 130 years.

The museum focuses on natural history, as well as cultural influences. From dinosaur fossils to Egyptian mummies to live amphibians, the displays are varied and well-presented.

Yellow and Black Frog at Manchester Museum, UK

Entry to the Manchester Museum is free.

In Our Option: Of all the museums that we highlight in our Manchester in a Day Itinerary, the Manchester Museum ranks as our favorite!

#16 The University of Manchester

Impressive Buildings at the Old Quadrangle, University of Manchester, England, UK

The history of The University of Manchester dates to the year 1824, when it was established as an Institute of Science and Technology. The institution moved to Oxford Road in the 1870s and the university’s most iconic buildings – now called the Old Quadrangle – were built in 1902.

Visitors are free to step into the Old Quad courtyard that is encircled by the Whitworth Building, John Owens Building and Beyer Building – all of which feature sumptuous Gothic architecture. At the foot of the ivy-covered Beyer Building, look for the giant boulder that dates from the Ice Age.

Beyer Building, The University of Manchester, UK

Travel Tip: The Whitworth Art Gallery, which is part of the University of Manchester, houses artworks by masters. The gallery sits on the south end of Oxford Road, right next to Whitworth Park (one of the city’s best green spaces!).

#17 Sackville Garden and Alan Turing Memorial

Sackville Garden, Manchester, UK

The next stop on your Manchester One Day Tour is Sackville Gardens, a city-center park in Manchester’s Gay Village. The park was designed in 1900 – and today it hosts several monuments: The Turing Memorial, the Beacon of Hope, The Tree of Life and the LGBT Queen Bee.

The Alan Turing Memorial, Manchester, England, UK

The Turing Memorial is a statue dedicated to Alan Turing, who is known as the ‘Father of Modern Computing’ for his work and discoveries as a mathematician and computer scientist. A brief story of his life is inscribed on an adjacent plaque.

On the north end of the park, The Beacon of Hope stands in remembrance of those who have died from AIDS and as a tribute to those who live with HIV.

Canal Street, Gay Village, Manchester, UK

Top Tip: After visiting Sackville Gardens, take a moment to walk along pedestrian Canal Street that runs alongside the Rochdale Canal just to the north of the park. The colorful street is lined with lively bars in the heart of the Manchester LGBTQ+ District.

#18 Manchester Chinatown and Archway

Visit Manchester Chinatown and See the Archway, MRC, England, UK

The Chinatown District in Manchester is vibrant and buzzing. The enclave of Chinese (and other Asian) restaurants, shops and bakeries ranks as one of the largest Chinatown districts in all of Europe.

A large, ornamental gate straddles Faulkner Street – and is a must-see Manchester attraction. The paifang, which was gifted to the Chinese community from the Manchester City Council, is painted red and gold with dragon decorations.

Top Tip: By this point in your Manchester One Day Itinerary, you have clocked some miles! If you need an afternoon pick-me-up or a moment to rest your weary feet, stop by one of the Chinatown tea shops – like Ohayo Tea, where they serve an array of freshly brewed fruit teas and bubble tea concoctions.

#19 Manchester Art Gallery

Statue at Manchester Art Gallery, England

The Manchester Art Gallery houses an excellent collection of artworks – including paintings, sculptures and objects – that span six centuries. In addition to the permanent collection, the gallery hosts rotating exhibits, as well.

Painting at Manchester Art Gallery, UK

Entrance to the Manchester Art Gallery and exhibitions is free.

Travel Tip: The space is bright and airy – with plenty of comfortable chairs and benches for guests to sit while admiring and contemplating the art.

#20 St. Peter’s Square Manchester

View of the Manchester Cenotaph, England, UK

Walking through St. Peter’s Square is a must during your one day in Manchester. The square marks the city’s Civic Quarter – and is home to the historic Town Hall (built in 1938), the grand Midland Hotel (dating to 1898), the Manchester Central Library (1934) and the Manchester Cenotaph (a WWI memorial). Since 1992, the square has also hosted a tram station.

Inside the Manchester Central Library Reading Room, UK

If time allows, step inside the grand Central Library (the round building that resembles the Pantheon in Rome). Use the main Shakespeare Hall entrance, walk through the domed Great Hall Wolfson Reading Room and visit the current art exhibit.

Pro Tip: Also not to be missed is Albert Square, which sits on the western end of the Gothic Town Hall building. The dazzling square hosts the Manchester Christmas Market.

#21 Northern Quarter

Wholesale Fish Market Arches, Northern Quarter, Manchester, UK

The Manchester Northern Quarter – better known as NQ – boasts a bohemian and creative culture. The lively district is one of the Manchester must-see places (and the best place for dinner and drinks, in our opinion!).

NQ is known for its independent shops, intriguing street art, vinyl record stores, vintage retailers, hip eateries and cool bars.

Shops at Afflecks, Manchester, England, UK

Visitors looking for alternative things to do in Manchester should look no further than Afflecks – an eclectic retail destination of more than 60 independently owned shops. Seeking out street art and playing retro arcade games at NQ64 are two other unique Manchester NQ things to do.

Pro Tip: Some of our favorite Manchester restaurants and craft beer bars in located in NQ. Coming up, we share our list of the top establishments in the Manchester Food and Drink Section!

#22 Ancoats District

Manchester is a thriving city – and there is so much more to see! Visitors with two days in Manchester can plan to visit Manchester sights beyond the city center.

Manchester Itinerary 2 Days

On the first day of your trip, use our above outline for how to spend One Day in Manchester, UK. Then, on the second day of your Manchester 2-Day Itinerary, spend the morning touring a famous football stadium and, in the afternoon, go to Salford Quays, another one of the top Manchester sights.

As we already mentioned, there are two football clubs in Manchester – and they play in different stadiums.

Manchester United plays at Old Trafford (which is southwest of the city center), while Manchester City holds matches at Etihad Stadium (to the east of downtown Manchester).

Tours at both stadiums welcome guests to walk through the tunnel to the pitch, tour the stadium (including the dressing rooms and dugouts) and view memorabilia. It is highly recommended to check availability and purchase tickets in advance. Find out if there is availability at Old Trafford or Etihad Stadium during your Manchester visit.

In the afternoon, head for Salford Quays – a modern hub for shopping and entertainment on the waterfront. In addition to the shops and water activities, top things to do in Manchester Quays District are visiting the Imperial War Museum, setting sail on a River Cruise and crossing the Millennium Bridge.
