The emirate's efforts to preserve the area's history garnered Sharjah the title of Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO in 1998.

For museum and art lovers, Sharjah is the best place to visit in the UAE. Visiting the renowned Sharjah Art Museum and the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization are the two major things to do, while the surrounding Heritage Area is full of restored buildings now dedicated to Emirati history.

One of the largest arts museums in the United Arab Emirates, this state-of-the-art facility opened in 1997 and features a permanent collection, as well as a program of temporary exhibits.

The galleries, spread over three floors, focus on works by Arab artists from throughout the Arab world.

Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is a good place to dive into the deep roots of Arab and Islamic culture.

Sharjah's Mleiha Archaeological Site is one of the best places to visit in the UAE to both learn about the deep history of the Arabian Peninsula and to add some desert activities into your vacation.

Mleiha is near the small settlement of Maleha, 60 kilometers east from Sharjah city.

Mleiha's museum and visitor center at the site entrance offer a thorough rundown of the site's history and heritage, and arranges a variety of tours for exploring the surrounding area with its orange sand dunes and craggy rock outcrops.

In the caves here, the first evidence of Paleolithic human activity outside of Africa was found.

Other parts of the site have revealed evidence of a later Neolithic settlement; Bronze Age tombs, including a large Umm An Nar tomb (which has been incorporated beautifully into the visitor center area); and fort and palace remnants from a 2nd- or 3rd-century settlement here.

Sharjah Fort (called Al Hisn in Arabic) sits on a plaza at the corner of the Heritage District.

The fort was built 200 years ago and has served as both a defensive facility for the town and as the traditional residence of the ruling family of Sharjah.

Inside, the rooms contain themed displays tracing the history of Sharjah, as well as the town's importance as part of the Gulf's trade networks.

Sharjah Desert Park's other main site is the Islamic Botanical Garden , a lush green space where 52 plant species all mentioned in the Qur'an (including figs, black cumin, and henna) are grown along with other plants such as saffron and pomegranate. Sharjah's Central Market, built in the 1970s, is the city's most famous architectural landmark. The intricate blue tile work on the exterior has given it the nickname the Blue Souk.

More than 600 shops are inside, where shoppers will find sections devoted to gold and jewelry, perfume, clothing, food, electronics, and gift-type items.

The upper floor has the atmosphere of a traditional bazaar, with vendors selling antiques, carpets, Omani and Yemeni jewelry, and all sorts of other souvenir-type items that hail from the greater Arab world, as well as central and south Asia.

As a settlement, Sharjah has always been linked closely to the water, and the Aquarium and Maritime Museum highlights the importance of the sea in the city's and the emirate's development.

For kids, the aquarium is the main attraction, and hosts around 150 species of sea life, including reef sharks and stingrays.

The connected Maritime Museum hosts interesting exhibits on traditional wooden dhows, as well as pearl collecting and fishing — all once important to the economy here.

Sharjah's huge, covered Souk Al-Jubail is an excellent way to experience the bustle of traditional Arabian shopping in a modern setting.

Join local shoppers as they do their weekly rounds at the fish souk — a stinky and busy mix of noise and color — and then dive into the fruit and vegetable souk, which is always crowded with vendors shouting out their prices and customers bargaining for good deals.

As well as being a prime opportunity to capture some vibrant photos of daily Sharjah life and see a shopping souk that hasn't been dressed up for the tourists, this is a great place to pick up gifts of local produce to take back home, such as dates and local honey.

Sharjah Archaeology Museum has exhibits tracing the wide-arcing history of humanity in the area.

Displays in the Stone Age section include numerous flint pieces reflecting the technology of that period, and old seashells. There are also ornamental gems and pottery shards from the Ubaid period that were found in Al Hamriyah and confirm the trade exchange of this age with Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq).

The Bronze Age Hall features archaeological finds of pottery, metals, stone, and jewelry, while the Iron Age Hall is home to two of the museum's prize pieces: a camel statue and a ceramic dome that both come from the Muweilah archaeological site.

The museum has done a good job of making its exhibits user-friendly, and children will be kept entertained by a variety of hands-on games.

Next door is the Sharjah Science Museum, the only interactive hands-on museum in the United Arab Emirates.

The Exhibition Hall includes state-of-the-art elements, which have been designed to get children interested in science. You can test your flexibility, grip strength, and balance; make a cartoon; use a music synthesizer; build a puzzle of the human body; or visit Playspace (which caters to younger children).

The on-site Planetarium takes you on a tour of the universe, from the Sharjah sky to deep space.

The most southerly village in the United Arab Emirates, Kalba is a tiny exclave of the Emirate of Sharjah on the eastern coast.

About 112 kilometers east of Sharjah, it's a charming place for a stroll that is worth the trip for the Al-Hisn Museum (built as a fort 200 years ago) and the fully restored House of Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad Al-Qassimi with its displays of musical instruments and traditional furniture.

Just south of the village is the Khor Kalba Conservation Reserve containing a vast mangrove forest.

This is a bird-watcher's paradise, especially during spring and autumn migrations.

Visitors can spot the rare white-collared kingfishers that breed here, as well as reef herons and booted warblers. Trips to the reserve are by boat or kayaking tours.

On the outskirts of Kalba town is the Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Center, a nature reserve with 30 desert and mountain species.

The large internal enclosure houses smaller animals such as reptiles, while outdoors, the large natural habitat style enclosures are home to desert lynx, Arabian leopards, caracal, and wolves.

This waterfront quarter, alongside the Al Qasbah Canal, is Sharjah's top nighttime destination with plenty of cafés and restaurants rimming both sides of the canal.

It's a favorite place for promenading families in the evening, and there is plenty of kid-focused fun to be had in this district.

There are both outdoor and indoor children's entertainment parks within the quarter, featuring a variety of rides, a go-cart center, and a soft-play area to keep little ones busy.

Head here also for evening boat rides, which launch from the canal out into Khalid Lagoon to see Sharjah's skyline lit up after dark.

Khor Fakkan is the second largest town on the east coast and an exclave of Sharjah. It's 109 kilometers east of Sharjah city.

Although the main feature of town is the thriving and less-than-picturesque container port, it's surrounded by a long stretch of beach that trails along the shore.

Khor Fakkan is only home to one mid-range older resort (Al Aqsah, just up the coast in Fujairah gets most of the east coast's beach-going tourists), but the sand here is good for a stop-off if you're road-tripping down the coast.

In the center of Khor Fakkan is one of Sharjah's newest tourist attractions, a huge manmade waterfall and a theater built in Roman-style overlooking the sea.

The Al Noor Mosque is the only mosque in Sharjah open to non-Muslims.

Anyone interested in digging a bit deeper into the heritage of the United Arab Emirates and wanting to learn a little about Islamic beliefs would find a visit here a worthy addition to their Sharjah itinerary.

Non-Muslims can visit the mosque on a tour, which takes place every Monday at 10am and includes a discussion on Islamic and Emirati history, culture, and traditions.

The mosque itself is a modern construction (built in 2005) and modeled on classical Ottoman style, with slender, pointed minarets, typical of Ottoman mosque architecture.

This immersive art installation, recreating a continuous flow of torrential rain, was previously exhibited in London, New York, and Shanghai but has found a permanent home in Sharjah.

The installation, set in a darkened space, with 2,500 liters of water recycled and looped through the ceiling, uses sensor technology so that visitors can walk through the rain without getting wet themselves.

Visiting the installation is very popular with UAE locals, who see little real rain throughout the year, but even those from wetter climes will appreciate the cleverness of the technology that allows you to wander through a downpour without getting soaked.

Al Montazah Island (also known as Flag Island) is a top spot in Sharjah if the kids need to let off some steam.

This small island in Khalid Lagoon is home to both a theme park with roller coasters and other rides plus a water park with plenty of water slides to beat the heat and have some fun.

The island's big attraction, though, is the 60-meter-high Eye of the Emirates observation wheel. Head up on this big wheel to get a soaring perspective over the city. Views from the top can stretch for 50 kilometers. It's particularly good for nighttime shots of Sharjah's lights and many illuminated buildings.

Hotels are spread throughout Sharjah with a scattering of resorts along the beachfront and plenty of high-rise hotels near the Corniche, facing Khalid Lagoon, in the city center.

• A popular option for longer stays in the city, Ramada Sharjah has a great central location opposite a shopping mall and near the lagoon and corniche. Its one- and two-bedroom apartments come with full kitchens and laundry facilities.

The Science museum , opened in 1996, is a perfect learning platform for kids and a unique tourist destination in its own right. It offers numerous science illusions and experiments that captivate visitors of all ages. Multiple science-related recreational activities are available, including optical illusions, hot air balloons, forward motion, plasma, electrical energy creation, Mathematics magics, and a documentary on astronauts.

The Sharjah Science museum also allows you to create your own cartoons, solve puzzles related to the human body, and analyze body strength. If you’re curious to visit this Science museum, I personally suggest you combine your trip with a visit to the Sharjah Archaeology museum as both are adjacent. Nestled in the desert about one hour away from downtown, Al Buhais Geological Park is an incredible Sharjah tourist attraction that you shouldn’t miss.

The park is home to a number of geological features and materials explaining how the land was formed. It’s much different than the regular tourist attractions in Sharjah, but I can’t recommend it enough. 

You’ll be greeted with a 15-minute video explaining what the visit will entail, then walk the mountain circuit trail, and stop by the cafe with tasty coffee and desserts at the end of your visit.

To sum up, if you’re looking for something a little more educational for you or your children, the Al Buhais Geological Park is the perfect place to visit in Sharjah UAE.

I’d recommend passing by in the morning to see the sunrise and the mist over the mountains.

On the other hand, in the evening, you’ll see all the city lights from above and that is an experience not to be missed.

The amphitheater has been recently constructed and is in excellent working order. The beach across the road is a plus, as is the artificial waterfall nearby.

KHORFAKKAN OLD SOUQ

Last but not least on this list of what to do in Sharjah is the Khorfakkan Old Souq, one of the main Sharjah attractions.

The souq has a wide variety of traditional handicrafts on offer, as well as a large number of souvenir shops. 

Khorfakkan Old Souq is also home to a range of restaurants and cafes, allowing you to try some traditional Emirati food.

The Old Souq is over 100km away from the city of Sharjah and, while this could be an inconvenience for some, it’s an amazing opportunity to explore this seaside village on the east coast.

Places to Visit in Sharjah: Top Things to See and Do! (2023)

Sharjah is one of the largest emirates in the UAE, and was the most important until the 1970s, serving as a vital hub for British trade routes to India.

This land of caravans and pearl-seekers has preserved an important cultural heritage, and although over time it has been eclipsed by the rise of Dubai, today it is a pleasant place to visit, offering excellent museums and adventurous experiences to do .

Sharjah has been recognized as the Arab Capital of Culture and is the cultural heart of the UAE. Today many people who work in Dubai choose to live in Sharjah, a modern, eclectic and peaceful city that absolutely deserves to be visited!

The Best Things to Do and See in Sharjah

1. sharjah heritage area (heart of sharjah).

The Sharjah Heritage Area, also known as the Heart of Sharjah , is a complex of well-preserved ancient buildings, where you can see what the city of Sharjah was like in the early 1900s.

Today the complex of the Sharjah Heritage Area , candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage List, houses several museums, such as the Sharjah Heritage Museum , which tells the history of the emirate, the Calligraphy Museum dedicated to the art of manuscripts and Bait Al Naboodah , a restored traditional house, which once belonged to an important local family.

Stop by the Souk Al Arsah , a traditional souk still active today, where you can find handicrafts, jewelry, spices and other local products.

In the Sharjah Heritage Area there is also a wonderful hotel, The Chedi Al Bait Sharjah . Spending a night here means living the experience of staying in an authentic Arab palace surrounded by great old charm.

2. Sharjah Mosque

The new Sharjah Mosque is a masterpiece of contemporary Arab architecture, inaugurated in 2019.

This large mosque is surrounded by green gardens, fountains and courtyards in richly decorated white stone. The prayer room is decorated with huge chandeliers and stained glass windows, in total the mosque can accommodate up to 25,000 worshipers.

The Sharjah Mosque is located outside the city, on the road to Maleha, and is also open to non-Muslim visitors.

In Sharjah there is also another very beautiful mosque, in classic Ottoman style, which even non-Muslims can visit, the Al Noor Mosque Sharjah , which is located in the center of the city.

Another famous Sharjah mosque is the King Faisal Mosque , dating back to the late 1980s and which for a long time was the largest in the UAE.

3. Sharjah’s Blue Souk (Central Market)

One of the best places to see in Sharjah is the Blue Souk, the central market. The name Blue Souk derives from the blue arabesques which decorate the facade of the building.

Inside there are over 600 shops that sell a little bit of everything, from jewelery to clothing, from spices to food, from perfumes to souvenirs.

The upper floor is the most characteristic wing, where they sell handicrafts, carpets and jewelery in an old-fashioned atmosphere.

4. Al Mahatta Fort – Sharjah Aviation Museum

The history of the United Arab Emirates is truly intriguing, and in a few places you can still go hunting for traces of the past like in Sharjah, where in the center you can find the remains of… an airport!

In the early 1900s, planes needed more frequent refueling than today and were not made to fly long distances without stopping. For this reason the British needed an overnight stop somewhere in the area of ​​the Arabian Peninsula , controlled however by a myriad of sheikhdoms.

All area rulers rejected the British request for an airstrip, except for the then ruler of Sharjah. In 1932 an airstrip was built in Sharjah and a fort guarded by armed guards to protect against the Bedouin raids.

In return, Sharjah obtained money for the rent from the British, and made sure that its port became the main port for British ships, which greatly improved the economy of the emirate.

Al Mahatta Fort was for a long time the only airport in the entire region , and after unification it became the first airport in the UAE. Al Mahatta Fort remained active until 1977 when Sharjah International Airport was built. Today it can be visited and houses the Sharjah Aviation Museum , which tells the history of air travel in the UAE.

Here you can see a collection of old airplanes, including the first airplane landed here. Inside the Al Mahatta fort there was also a small cinema, this was the first cinema in the Gulf area .

5. Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization

The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is one of the most important museums to visit in Sharjah, because it houses one of the most complete collections on Islamic and Arab culture.

During the visit to the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization , the visitor can learn many interesting things about local culture. The exhibitions include collections of artifacts ranging from the 7th to the 19th century, weapons, jewels in precious metals, ancient manuscripts and astrolabes.

Noteworthy is the mosaic representing the zodiac, visible on the vault of the central dome of the museum.

6. Sharjah Fort

Sharjah Fort is an ancient fort built around 1820 to defend the city of Sharjah and as a residence for the ruler’s family.

Sharjah Fort is located near the Heritage Area and was the result of careful renovation work that took place between 1997 and 2015, with the transformation into a museum.

The Sharjah Fort Museum houses a collection of vintage weapons, cannons, the royal bed and other things that belonged to the ruler.

7. Al Majaz Waterfront

Al Majaz Waterfront is one of the most beautiful places in Sharjah, and to enjoy it to the fullest, go there at sunset, it’s spectacular!

Al Majaz Waterfront is located at the end of the Khaled Lagoon , in the heart of Sharjah, and is one of the most vibrant places, with green meadows, ponds and fountains. Locals love to walk here in the evening or in the morning, or go on the long jogging track that runs through the park.

At Al Majaz Waterfront you can see the spectacular Sharjah Musical Fountain and many events and artists that animate the place in the evening.

For families there are many restaurants and cafes and also children’s playgrounds. The main Sharjah concerts and festivals are also held here, making it one of the most popular parks in the city.

Entrance is free, some games or attractions are subject to a fee.

8. Al Noor Island

Al Noor Island is the ideal place to take a quiet sunset stroll or enjoy some tranquility.

Al Noor Island is a small islet in Khalid lagoon , in the center of Sharjah, inaugurated in 2015. From here you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Sharjah skyline, and stroll through the green gardens which are illuminated by colored lights in the evening.

The bridge you walk to get there is a great spot to take good pictures, and the best time to go is at sunset, when Al Noor Island comes alive, with artistic and musical performances.

The must-see attraction of Al Noor Island is the Butterfly House , where you can see over 500 butterflies belonging to 20 different exotic species.

Entry to Al Noor Island costs AED 35 for adults and AED 20 for children (ages 3 to 12).

9. Souk Al-Jubail

Immerse yourself in local life, take a look at Souk Al-Jubail, the large covered market in Sharjah.

This market is frequented by locals who find the freshest ingredients here, freshly caught fish in the Gulf and a large variety of colorful fruit and vegetables.

Souk Al-Jubail is always crowded, and it’s a good place to buy something good to eat, like dates, and have fun bargaining with vendors.

10. Sharjah Archeology Museum

The area around Sharjah is rich in archaeological finds and traces of ancient civilizations. The Sharjah Archeology Museum allows you to see the most important finds, from the Stone Age onwards.

An area is dedicated to gems and artifacts dating back to the merchants who traded with Mesopotamia (today’s Iraq), the path then continues through the rich exhibition dedicated to the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.

Thanks to the interactive installations along the way, the visit is pleasant and simple, able to convince even children.

11. Al Qasba

Al Qasba is Sharjah’s top nighttime destination, it is located directly on the sea and is full of nice restaurants and cafes.

Local couples and families (but also tourists) love to walk along the Al Qasba canal, it is a quiet place, there are playgrounds for children, benches and places to enjoy some rest.

12. Sharjah Classic Cars Museum

Vintage car enthusiasts will love this place, the Sharjah Classic Cars Museum is located near the airport and houses a valuable collection of vintage cars dating back to the early 1900s.

The oldest car on display is a 1915 Dodge, but the exhibition traces the entire history of the automotive industry, explaining its construction processes and telling the story and the evolution of brands and models.

One of the highlights of the collection is an old Mercedes limousine that belongs to the Sharjah ruler.

13. At Montazah Parks

Al Montazah Parks is one of Sharjah’s main tourist attractions dedicated to entertainment. Located in Khalid Lagoon this park (once called Al Jazeera Park) offers a famous water park called Pearls Kingdom and a large open-air adventure park called Island of Legends .

Al Montazah Parks are located on Flag Island , on the opposite side from the side where the flag pole is. While you’re there, take a look also at the beautiful Flag Island!

Places to see in Sharjah with the kids

1. sharjah aquarium & maritime museum.

The Sharjah Aquarium offers an overview of the species that live in the Gulf, with around 200 different species housed in the tanks which are a perfect reproduction of the coral reef. Compared with the Dubai Aquarium, this is significantly smaller in size.

Connected to the Sharjah Aquarium is the Maritime Museum , which houses an interesting exhibition of Dhows, the traditional wooden boats of the UAE, and is a good place to learn about fishing, pearls and ancient trade routes.

2. Sharjah Desert Park

Sharjah Desert Park is a park dedicated to desert wildlife and divided into a Natural History Museum , a Botanical Museum and the Wildlife Center , where you can see many animals, including the rare Arabian oryx and the majestic Arabian leopard, as well as wildcats, hyenas, mongooses, hyenas, wolves and snakes.

The kids will love the Children’s Farm in Sharjah Desert Park, where they can get close to the cute farm animals and feed the cows, goats, camels and Arabian horses.

3. Sharjah Science Museum

This is a place for curious kids (and parents)! The Sharjah Science Museum is a fully interactive museum, which allows kids to test themselves with exciting experiments and incredible discoveries.

From the secrets of physics to the magic of chemistry, kids will learn many new things by doing, learning the human body, looking in microscopes or trying to synthesize new sounds.

4. Sharjah Discovery Center

The Sharjah Discovery Center is a theme park dedicated to the wonders of technology and science, where children can learn many things about construction, energy, transport and communication.

Kids can find out how an airport is made, how an oil refinery works, have fun with sounds or improvise film directors.

The entire interactive path offers many play possibilities that stimulate children’s curiosity and creativity.

5. Sharjah National Park

Sharjah National Park is a large public garden, the largest in Sharjah, and is the place where local families love to go with their children.

At Sharjah National Park you will find a large green lawn, paths lined with plants and fountains, jogging tracks, picnic and BBQ areas, and a large free playground for children.

Sharjah National Park is located next to the Sharjah Discovery Center and is a good place to spend an afternoon just like the locals do.

Places to see in Sharjah for art lovers

1. sharjah art foundation.

Located in the artist quarter and close to the major attractions of the Heart of Sharjah, the Sharjah Art Foundation is a complex of museums, art installations and buildings dedicated to art and culture.

Art lovers will appreciate the various events and exhibitions that are organized here, as well as a lively artistic community that has made this place an important reference point for local art.

2. Sharjah Arts Museum

Oriental art enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to the Sharjah Arts Museum, one of the most important art museums in all the UAE.

The Sharjah Arts Museum opened in 1997 and is a state of the art museum, with a large permanent collection of thousands of art masterpieces spread over 3 floors, as well as several temporary exhibitions.

Places to see outside the city of Sharjah

1. khor fakkan.

Khor Fakkan is another Sharjah Emirate exclave, facing the Gulf of Oman, along the east coast.

The city of Khor Fakkan is the second largest city in the emirate of Sharjah, but retains a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. It is located in a strategic position, with a beautiful natural port that is often chosen as a stopover for cruise ships because of its picturesque landscape and beautiful white sand beaches.

For now, the city has retained much of its authentic charm and has not been affected by mass tourism, visitors can explore its streets, its renowned fish market and a picturesque tower from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the gulf.

Kalba is the southernmost village in the United Arab Emirates along the east coast, and is located on the border with Oman, about 120 km from the city of Sharjah, but in the same emirate.

Today Kalba is a small and peaceful fishing village , with a market where you can find excellent fresh fish. Visitors love to stroll along the Corniche, a long promenade that runs the length of the city.

Kalba Fort and the House of Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad Al-Qassimi are also worth visiting. All the main places to see are in the same area, you can park your car and walk around.

Just south of the village, beyond the Ice Factory, there is a parking lot and from there a path leads to the Khor Kalba Conservation Reserve , a mangrove forest that is a paradise for bird watchers, with dozens of species of water birds.

3. Mlieha Archeological Center

The Mlieha Archeological Center is the right place to discover the history of desert civilizations, of those people who, through thousands of years of history, have learned to survive in extreme conditions and to build villages and cities to live in.

The Mlieha Archeological Center is the most important archeological site of the emirate and is located about 60 km from the city of Sharjah. Here you can see artifacts dating back over 120.000 years ago, bronze weapons, pottery and tombs.

The Mlieha Archeological Center is located in the desert, not far from the Wadi Caves , a complex of caves dating back to prehistoric times (which can be visited with a rather harsh trek, but from the top the view of the desert is remarkable) and from an expanse of large dunes. Better to go there in winter.

4. The Buried Village

The desert is a land of mysteries, of lost cities, and of legends. The buried village which is located just outside the town of Al Madam in the emirate of Sharjah, along the border with Oman, has all these characteristics.

The Buried Village is a village lost in the desert sand, which partially covers its houses. It is said that people from the Kutbi tribe lived here, but nobody knows what happened to them or why they left.

The village, built in the 70s, is made up of two rows of houses and a mosque. Today the houses are half-buried and some, including the mosque, have filled up with sand.

Al Madam Ghost City today attracts photographers and curious from all over the world, attracted by the surreal photographs that can be taken inside the houses invaded by the sand.

The only way to get to the area is to book a 4×4, Al Madam Ghost City is located in the middle of the desert.

How to get to Sharjah

The city of Sharjah is very well connected to Dubai, this is because many people who work in Dubai have chosen to live in Sharjah.

There are several buses leaving from different stations in Dubai , but the journey time is over 1 hour. Both Dubai and Sharjah suffer from heavy traffic during peak hours.

The main buses from Dubai to Sharjah are:

• E306 from Ghubaiba Bus Station in Dubai
• E307 from Deira City Center Bus Station in Dubai
• E303 from Union Square Metro Station in Dubai
• E311 from Rashidiya Metro Station in Dubai

The E311 route is currently the best way to go from Dubai to Sharjah, it takes half the time compared to the others.

From Sharjah to Dubai it’s easier: the buses all leave from Al Jubail Bus Station in Sharjah.

The cost of the ticket is 10 AED one way.

Travelers heading to Sharjah who land at Dubai International Airport need to book a private transfer because there are no buses.

Taxis regularly connect Dubai with Sharjah and vice versa. In this case a surcharge of 20 AED is added to the price of the ride, making it the most expensive solution.

Day trip from Dubai

Most visitors to Dubai choose to take a day trip to Sharjah. You can book a guided tour that includes transportation and a professional guide who accompanies you to discover all the main attractions of the city. It’s a smart, easy and cheap choice!

How to Get Around in Sharjah

NOTE: Bear in mind that the emirate of Sharjah is the most conservative of all UAE emirates . This means for example that alcohol is completely banned (with very few exceptions), including possession. It is also better to dress appropriately.

The city of Sharjah has a good bus and taxi network. Reaching most hotels or tourist attractions is quite easy.

The most convenient solution for tourists are the Hop On Hop Off double-decker buses , which are very convenient and travel along an excellent route that allows you to fully enjoy the city and stop in all the main tourist attractions.

Al Noor Island Sharjah

Opened in 2015, this oasis island in the Khalid lagoon is a recent attraction in Sharjah.

This park is an amalgamation of many tastes in the middle of the water. A pedestrian bridge connects the Island to the mainland. The Island is decorated with lights that change colors to suit the time of the day. During dusk and dawn, everything becomes more exuberant in this place.

The Pearls Kingdom is the only water-themed park in Sharjah. This is yet another recent addition to Al Montazah park. The park was designed to keep safety first in mind.

Mellieha Archeological Center Sharjah

Proof of human civilization in Sharjah’s deserts dates back tens of thousands of years ago. That’s the apt way to describe Mleiha. It’s interesting to witness the evidence that social life thrived in these desolate deserts because we usually think of the UAE after its oil discovery.

Mellieha is an archeological site located 60 km away from central Sharjah. If you drive, it will take you around 45 minutes. Several objects have been unearthed here at least 120,000 years old, including stone and bronze weapons, pottery, and burial tombs.

It even has enough to satiate thrill-seekers. Dune bashing near the fossil rocks in a 4×4 is something worth trying. 

The Mlieha has become the center for sustainable tourism in Sharjah. It has given importance to the area and what lies beneath it. But choose winter when you go because you will spend a lot of time outdoors.

Visit the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation

Located on corniche street is the vault that houses the gems from Islamic history. The structure itself is remarkable. Originally meant as a marketplace near the Central Souq, this significant embodiment of the emirate’s heritage stands high on the bank of Sharjah Creek. The massive dome with intricate detailing is an exemplary Islamic architectural work.

The collection includes religious manuscripts, handwritten copies of the Quran, calligraphy, beautifully painted pottery and glass, and 5000 more artifacts from the 7th century until the 13th century AD. There are also handicrafts made of silver, gold, and brass.

Apart from the Abbasids and Umayyad eras, antique items from Mughal and Ottoman periods are housed here. The collection of astrolabes in Ibn Al-Haytham Gallery of Science and Technology and coinage probes the curious to dig deep into the Islamic golden age.

The museum has six galleries spread over two floors. Walking around and seeing all the relics will take a few hours. This is also an excellent place to get an insight into the fundamentals of the Islamic faith and traditions. 

The museum’s other good things are its proximity to Sharjah’s major attractions and the nominal ticket price. It is a place that you can visit on a lazy afternoon with your kids.

Al Mahatta Fort – Sharjah Aviation Museum

In the early ages of air travel, planes were not ready to fly long routes without stopping. They had to stop and refuel before resuming the journey. Often this meant a staycation at the place of stopover. In 1932, The imperial airways airplanes needed an overnight stopover in the Arabian peninsula controlled by various sheikdoms.

All the rulers rejected the request for an airstrip except for the then-ruler of Sharjah — Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi II, who ruled from 1924 to 1951. He built the airstrip in 1932 and a fort for protection against Bedouin raids. In return, the aviation company agreed to pay rent, and the ruler secured the right to reroute the British ships through Sharjah ports, thus improving the economy of Sharjah.

This was the birth of the first airport in the whole region. After unification, the Al Mahatta fort became the first airport in the UAE. It functioned as an airport until 1977 when the Sharjah International airport was built.

Today the fort houses the Sharjah aviation museum. The museum curates the history of flying and air travel in the UAE. After decades of disrepair, it was opened in 1998 by Sharjah Sultan Mohammed al Qasimi.

It also has a collection of old airplane models and flight equipment. The first plane to land at Mahatta airstrip, named the Hanno, is displayed in the museum. 

The museum is on King Abdul Aziz Street, and it resembles the traditional buildings of the old days and is constructed using the same techniques.

Interestingly, the first movie house in the Arabian Gulf was set up in the Mahatta fort. This cinema, tiny compared to modern-day theaters, is an exciting part of the display. Chairs here are empty kerosene cans half-filled with sand—travelers who stayed in the fort for the stopover watched short movies and documentaries on this screen.

Sharjah Fort – Al Hisn al Sharjah Museum

Sultan al Saqr al Qasimi built the fort. But not the same person who made the Mahatta fort. This one is a century older than the Mahatta fort. The Al Hisn al Sharjah was constructed sometime around 1820.

At the time of its construction, it was the largest and most significant building in Sharjah. In its lifetime as a fort, it served as the residence of the Sharjah ruling family and the government’s headquarters.

Although it was converted into a museum in 1997, it wasn’t until 2015 that the Sharjah government renovated it into its present form as part of the Sharjah project’s heart.

The Sharjah fort looks modern compared to the Al Fahidi fort in Dubai. This is because everything else was demolished except for the tower on the southern side in 1970. The fort was first restored in 1997.

Fort was built using coral stones and was covered with light brown plaster. Coral stones were a popular building material in those times. It is in the middle of Rolla city in Sharjah. Amidst tall concrete structures, the fort looks a bit out of place. But the whole area will take on a similar outlook with the heart of the Sharjah project nearing completion.

The fort served as a defense center to protect the city from the bedouin attack and neighboring sheikdoms. Notable artifacts in the museum include the royal bed, several cannons, and a Quran stand that belonged to the ruler Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi.

The Buried Village

Although not of any historical significance or anything particular about its modernity, this place in Sharjah is notable for its mystery. The buried village is a village lost in the sands of the desert. The town, or it once was, is just outside the village of Madam in Sharjah.

According to the locals, the half-buried houses in the sand belonged to the people of the Kutbi tribe. The mysterious part is nobody knows why they left or what happened to them. Strangely, it lies near a well-populated township in the emirate.

The village consists of two rows of blue and red houses on either side of a street, with a mosque at one end. They were all built in the 70s. The wind has done the job of burying them in the sand. A few houses have sand covering the top of their roofs, while others, including the mosque, have their interiors filled to the knee height in the sand.

There is no public transport to the area. Also, the village is in the middle of the desert. So you will need a four-wheel drive to take you there. There are some lovely dunes near the town, so that you can double the visit with an offroading trip.

Maraya Arts Center Sharjah

23 Fantastic Places to Visit in Sharjah You’ll Love

The third most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sharjah is known for its culture and heritage. In all honesty, I hadn’t heard of Sharjah before being invited to visit which is quite rare for me. I had visited Dubai and Abu Dhabi but knew little about the other Erimates.

I was quite excited to discover somewhere totally new and I was not disappointed. Sharjah is the only Emirates with two coasts as it lies between the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. In addition to fantastic sea views and white beaches Sharjah has rugged mountains, awesome sand dunes and beautiful nature reserve.

The third biggest city in the UAE is also a great place for foodies with a rich and varied diet that can be sampled through its modern restaurants on water fronts, traditional restaurants tucked away in souqs and best of all eating at the home of a local.

I was also surprised to discover that Sharjah was once the biggest producer of pearls in the world. It has a rich history plus it is considered to be the centre of Islamic culture in the UAE, having previously held UNESCO designations in Arab and Islamic cultures.

Here are 23 fantastic places to visit while you’re in Sharjah.

1. sharjah museum of islamic civilisation.

If you’re keen to learn more about Islam this is the place to go. The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation is dedicated to Islamic art and contains over 100,000 artifacts.

The museum’s gallery of Islamic faith does an excellent job explaining the processes within the religion, how mosques work, the different elements in mosques and their roles.

Futher galleries cover the achievements of muslim scholars in science and technology. This includes everything from chemistry to medical treatments to engineering. The first floor of the museum is an art gallery.

For me the photography highlight of the museum was the stunning blue mosaic inside its dome which depicts the night sky and the signs of the zodiac.

2. Sharjah Corniche

The Sharjah Corniche runs for just over 4 miles along the coast of Sharjah. It is lined with palm trees and a great place to walk, jog or cycle. It is particularly lovely at sunset.

3. Al Noor Island

Al Noor Island is on the north shore of the khalid lagoon. This beautiful island is home to more than 85 species of plants and its centre piece is the butterfly centre, home to over 500 butterflies.

The island was one of my favourite places to visit in Sharjah. In addition to all of its beautiful trees and plant life the island is home to a beach, lagoon and botanical garden. Plus interesting sculptures and other works of art appear in many places across the island and offer some great photo opportunities.

Sit on The Swing, an art installation by Azza Al Qubaisi. It represents the times in the pearl harvest season when women would stand by the shore and wait for their husband’s safe return from sea. Today it is a wonderful place to watch the sunset over Sharjah.

Or the Taurus Sculpture, a beautifully formed stainless stell elliptical mirror that misleads the eye in order to stimulate the mind.

Heart of Sharjah

The Heart of Sharjah is the largest historical preservation and restoration project in the region. First launched in 2010, this project has revitalised the heritage distrcit of Sharjah by restoring old buildings and constructing new buildings in the traditional Sharjah architectural style. They are now home to museums, hotels, markets, restaurants and much more.

It is possible to buy a Heritage ticket which includes Sharjah Fort, Al Eslah School Museum, Sharjah Heritage Museum, Sharjah Calligraphy Museum and Bait Al Naboodah.

4. Souq Al Arsah Sharjah

One of the oldest souqs in the UAE, Souq Al Arsah Sharjah is a popular shopping destination in Sharjah. The building dates back 150 years and today it is home to shops selling souvenirs and clothing as well as restaurants and cafes.

5. Souq Al Shanasiyah

Souq Al Shanasiyah Sharjah is another popular shopping area in the Sharjah heritage area. It is a covered street complete with fans to help keep shoppers cool in Sharjah’s often warm weather. This is another great place to come to buy traditional items as souvenirs to take home.

6. Sharjah Calligraphy Museum

The only museum in the United Arab Emirates to be dedicated to the art of calligraphy, Sharjah Calligraphy Museum is home to more than 2,000 pieces of calligraphy that date back to the 15th century. In addition to the lovely permanent collection, the museum holds many exhibitions.

7. Bait Al Naboodah

This beautiful traditional emirate home was once the residence of the wealthy pearl trader Obaid bin Eissa bin Ali Al Shamsi. Today it is a museum that tells the story of the pearl trade and its previous owner who ws nicknamed Al Naboodah.

Bait Al Naboodah was originally built in the mid-19th century and features beautiful carved doors, tiles and a large interior courtyard. It has a peaceful feel and gives a sense of what life must have been like during the times of pearl trading in Sharjah.

8. Sharjah Art Spaces

Sharjah Art Spaces was founded in 2009 to support contemporary artists in the emirate. The museum was created from five dilapidated buildings in the Sharjah Culture Centre which were connected through their rooftops to create a large and airy space for exhibitions.

9. The Rain Room

The Rain Room is an immersive installation at the Sharjah Art Foundation and the first of its type in the Middle East. It is essentially a very large dark room that has a smaller area in it that is constantly raining.

The fun bit is walking through a downpour of rain without getting wet – and of course whilst being photographed and/or captured on video.

A warning – it is not immediately obvious how to immerse yourself in the rain area without getting wet so be prepared to get at least a little wet in the beginning. The key is to figure out the path to follow and to move very slowly.

The rain area also has lights which makes for some lovely rain effects as well shadows for some great photo opportunities. Make sure you visit the Rain Room with at least one other person as you won’t want to take your phone under the water – and the best photos are those taken by someone outside the rain area.

10. Sharjah Mosque

Sharjah mosque is a spectacular building with a spectacular location on the Sharjah corniche. It is one of the largest mosques in the UAE and one of the most important religious sites in Sharjah. Built in the early 20th century, the mosque was built from limestone and sandstone.

Now the largest mosque in Sharjah, it opened in 2019. It is also well known for its beautiful gardens and fantastic water fountains that offer beautiful reflections of the mosque. The mosque somewhat changes colours during the day depending on the light. I thought it was at its most beautiful at sunset.

Sharjah Mosque is also one of the few mosques non muslims can visit. At the time of writing this article tours were being held on Mondays and Thursdays at 10am. Additionally, private tours can be organised.

11. House of Wisdom

Another spectacular building (this one by Norman Foster and Partners), Sharjah’s House of Wisdom opened in 2020. The original House of Wisdom was in Baghdad but it was destroyed in the siege. Inspired by Sharjah being honoured with the World Book Capital title by UNESCO for 2019, the House of Wisdom re-imagines the concept of a library by expanding it into a cultural hub.

Sharjah promised UNESCO it woudl promote reading and ease of access and knowledge to all members of society. The House of Wisdom uses advances in technology to deliver a library unlike no other. The investment in tech is clearly evident from how to find a book to how to borrow to the espresso book machine. This machine can print a book in less than 5 minutes for as cheaply as $USD7.

As it is a cultural centre it is possible to take a tour of the House of Wisdom. The building itself is spectacular enough to warrant a visit and don’t miss the stunning glass atrium at its centre.

12. Sharjah Safari Park

Sharjah’s latest attraction opened early 2022. Alas, Sharjah Safari Park opened just after I visited so I wasn’t able to see it in person. But this safari park has been seven years in the making, has 12 different environments, 1000 animals and birds and is the UAE’s largest wildlife attraction.

13. Holy Quran Academy Sharjah

Opened in 2007, the Holy Quran Academy is a global project for teaching the Holy Quran from Sharjah to Muslims around the world. It is the largest complex dedicated to Islam and its teachings in the world. It consists of seven scientific and historical museums that cover the history of writing and then the codification of verses of the Holy Quran.

The Holy Quran Academy has versions of the Quran dating back to 700 AD, some of which are worth over USD$1 million. And like many of the other places to visit in Sharjah in this article, all of this is within a stunning building. However, the interiors almost out do the exteriors with beautiful designs particularly in the domes.

14. Al Majaz Waterfront

Located on the banks of the Khalid lagoon, Al Majaz Waterfront has restaurants, mini golf, a park and a fountain that shoots water up 100 metres with colored lights and music at night. During the day rent a bike and cycle along the waterfront.

15. The Sharjah Aquarium

One of the most popular attractions in Sharjah is its Aquarium. Sharjah Aquarium consists of 20 large tanks and is home to more than 150 species of marine life including sharks. The museum is open daily from 9am to 7pm.

16. The Sharjah Forts

Built in 1923, the Sharjah Forts are a series of five forts that where built to protect the city. They were also home to the ruling Al Qasami family and the sat of Sharjah’s Government. Today the forts are used as a museum that tells the history of Sharjah and its royal family.

17. Al Buhais Geological Park Sharjah

Located halfway between Sharjah’s two coasts, Al Buhais Geological Park looks like something out of Star Wars. The spectacularly designed Interpretive Centre sits in a large desert park. Its five interconnecting pods seem to almost come out of the ground.

The design of the pods was inspired by the fossils of the area. The pods sit on reinforced concrete discs to minimise interference with the park and are clad in steel panels.

The five pods house an immersive theatre, cafe, gift shop and further facilities. Interactive displays bring to life the mountains and sand dunes of the area as well as allowing visitors the chance to examine local rocks and fossils.

Make sure you take the outdoor trail that allows visitors closer contact with the park as well as providing great views of the Interpretive Centre.

18. Shais Park

Covering 11,000 square metres, Shais Park opened in October of 2020. It sits on the eastern side of Sharjah and is home to a mix of flora and fauna. Visitors can walk, cycle, bird watch or learn to trek. The park sits on the Hajar Mountains offer some stunning vistas.

19. Khorfakkan Amphitheatre

Khorfakkan is the largest of Sharjah’s east coast cities and home to some of the best places to visit in Sharjah. Like, Khorfakken Ampitheatre the largest open-air theatre in the Middle East that has seating capacity for up to 3,600 people.

Inspired by Roman architecture, the ampitheatre has an innovative cooling system which I think the Romans missed! The theatre hosts numerous concerts and events and has a great location just a stone’s throw from the sea.

20. Khorfakkan Waterfall

Just a few steps from Khorfakkan ampitheatre is Khorfakkan waterfall. This 45 metre high waterfall is man made but carved out of the natural rocks of the area. It has viewing windows at the top which can be open to the public for views of the waterfall as well as the sea.

21. Khorfakkan Old Souq

The atmospheric Khorfakkan old souq is a mix of old and new. The old markets and shops have been restored in a traditional manner and the souq is also home to a great little museum which brings the ways of the past to life.

There are many great places to visit in Sharjah but the top of my personal list was Mleiha. A trip to Mleiha normally includes a jeep safari and a traditional dinner at a Bedouin camp. Or you can also add sandboarding to the itinerary if you’re up for it.

We took a jeep safari and had a fantastic time. Our driver really leaned into his extreme turns and bounces and we got some great photo opportunities. We watched an amazing sunset from the top of a sand dune.

Once the sun dropped we headed back to a bedouin camp for some traditional food and star gazing. Technologically advanced telescopes were available as well as experts to guide us in seeing star formations and to give us a close look at the moon.

Finally we enjoyed a delicious dinner sharing style outside under the stars. A Mleiha Desert Safari is a must do when in Sharjah.

23. Sharjah Light Festival

The first Sharjah Light Festival was in 2012 and it has become an annual popular event (it was unable to run in 2021 due to Covid). It is a fantastic event and well worth scheduling your visit to Sharjah to coincide with the event.

During the Light Festival, spectacular light shows are projected onto some of Sharjah’s best known landmarks as well as unique venues like the waterfront. Themes and techniques change each year of course but when Sharjah’s striking architecture is combined with the creative use of light and color it is certainly something to see.

Places to Eat in Sharjah

This mediterranean-lebanese dining concept is located on the Al Qasba waterfront in Sharjah. The menu at Shababeek was curated by chef Maroun Chedid of Top Chef fame. We enjoyed some fantastic grilled meats, awesome dips and delectable pita bread.

Jones the Grocer

Flag Island is unsurprisingly named for its 123 metre high flagpole. It is also home to the Jones the Grocer restaurant. Jones the Grocer began in Australia in the mid 1990s. Their mix of cafe, grocery store and cheese room was unique at the time.

They have developed into the Middle East and their Sharjah restaurant offers a wide range of food styles prepared in a healthy and modern way.

The Cloud Lounge

I only had coffee at The Cloud Lounge but I had to mention it as it has the most fantastic views. The Cloud Lounge is located in the Khorfakkan mountains and sits 600 meters above sea level.

Boutique Hotels in Sharjah

Sharjah is filled with stylish boutique hotels. I stayed in two and took tours of the other three boutique hotels below. If, like me, you love a boutique hotel then you’ll love Sharjah – and the boutique hotels in Sharjah are often very good value.

Chedi Al Bait

Oh my I so loved the Chedi Hotel in Sharjah!!! Where to begin? Firstly this luxurious five star hotel has a fantastic location in the heart of Sharjah City. All of the attractions in the Heart of Sharjah area which I listed above are within walking distance of the hotel.

The Chedi Al Bait translates as “The Home”. The hotel is actually five heritate houses whichi were once owned by local families. The hotel itself covers 10,000 square metres and has only 53 rooms. This gives guests a wonderful sense of space and privacy.

Design wise the Chedi Al Bait is a fantastic mix of the traditional and the new. It makes the most of the beautiful old buildings and a more modern simple design aesthetic. There are many open spaces throughout the hotel with comfortable and stylish seating.

The rooms are unsurprisingly beautiful and very generous in size. My room had a separate entrance hall, dressing area, large bedroom with a seating area and a big bathroom with separate shower and toilet. The toiletries are Aqua di Parma – don’t miss using them as they are terrific.

You will most likely have a fantastic night’s sleep when you stay at the Chedi as you will be sleeping on the world’s most expensive mattresses. The Chedi has Duxiana mattresses. At USD$17,000 per mattress these are the world’s priciest mattresses and wow do they feel great! Do be warned that this will make all of the other mattresses in your life seem a little rubbish.

The stylish pool is perfect for Instagram envy photos and some serious relaxations. Don’t miss trying one of their delicious homemade fruit based by the pool popsicles. The pool is kept extra cold in the summer and heated for winter. There is also a spa which alas I didn’t have time to try and a fitness centre.

The Chedi even has its own museum which covers the history of the houses that make up the hotel as well as a jewellry shop, library and cigar bar. They are planning to have their own private beach. In the meantime the hotel provides a shuttle bus from the hotel to the beach.

Breakfast each morning is in The Restaurant. The menu offers a range of pre-prepared dishes from across several cultures. I enjoyed trying a different middle eastern style breakfast each morning. The Restaurant is open for all meals and we also had an excellent lunch there. And don’t forget the lovely coffee shop at the entrance – try an iced coffee.

The only downside I could find at The Chedi is that it is very easy to get lost. But there is always a lovely staff member nearby to point you in the right direction.

Mysk Moon Retreat

Mysk resorts own several lovely boutique hotels in Sharjah. Moon retreat is their eco friendly retreat that is located about 45 minutes from Sharjah city in the desert. The resort is only open for 6 months of the year (it is too hot for the other 6 months).

Mysk Moon Retreat looks like something out of a stylish science fiction movie. Accommodation options are either a large glamping tent or a futuristic style pod that is still in keeping with the desert environment.

There are no trade offs inside the tents and pods with high thread counts and stylish interiors. The glamping tents come with their own pools. There is no restaurant at the retreat. Each tent and pod has its own special bbq and food is provided for guests to prepare themselves. And apparently the star gazing at night is amazing!

Mysk Al Faya Retreat

The first gas pump in the United Arab Emirates is now the site of this unique boutique hotel. Another retreat about 45 minutes from Sharjah city, Mysk Al Faya has just five rooms. This makes it perfect for groups travelling together as they can essentially have the restreat to themselves.

The charming rooms have a clean and modern design and lovely bathtubs. Of course there is a pool as well as a roof terrace, tropical shower walk, herbal room and a fantastic Himalayan Salt Room.

Mysk Al Badayer

Another property less than an hour from Sharjah city, this is the largest of the Mysk desert properties but still boutique size with 21 rooms and 10 villas. The entrance to Mysk Al Badayer looks like a fort rising out of the dunes.

The rooms are simply designed with dark floor boards and ceiling beams offset by high quality white linens and white walls. I love the Middle Eastern touches in the lamps and the bathroom with its copper sink.

The villas are quite stunning and all have their own private pools. However, if like me you are staying in a room rather than a villa there is a huge pool with a small water feature and lots of stylish pool side furniture.

Mysk Al Badayer offers a huge range of activities. Quite a few are included in the cost of your stay such as the nightly falcon show and movie nights. Trips into the desert can be easily organised.

The restaurant at Mysk Al Badayer offers a buffet breakfast and dinner as well as an a la carte menu. The breakfast buffet is extensive and I enjoyed a delicious lunch at the restaurant – the best fattoush salad I have ever eaten!

Kingfisher Retreat

Kingfisher Retreat is quite different to the three other Mysk properties I have just mentioned. Firstly, it is set on an island off the East Coast of Sharjah on a pristine beach facing the Gulf of Oman. The waters around the retreat are a natural habitat for turtles, gazelles, birds and many other animals. The mangroves can be visited on a kayak tour.

This is a retreat designed for relaxing. The pace is slower and the design is modern beach front. Like the other Mysk properties, all of the interiors are modern and simple.

The retreat consists of 20 tents, each with their own private pool. Virtually all of the tents have sea views. Guests can head to the main tent for meals and a larger pool, a spa is on offer as is yoga on the terrace most evenings.

How to Get to Sharjah

Sharjah has its own international airport which is just under 20 kilometres from Dubai airport. International airlines like Turkish and Qatar fly into Sharjah. However, Dubai airport of course has a larger number of flights and destinations.

Flights to Dubai

The easiest way to get from Dubai airport to Sharjah is by taxi. Depending on traffic (which can be bad) and your destination in Sharjah this can take between 20 and 45 minutes.

As I explored Sharjah, the beauty of this little-visited city in the United Arab Emirates mesmerised me.

From its beautiful Islamic architecture and centuries-old souks to its towering minarets and epic light show, there are endless things to do in Sharjah.

If you’re looking for an exciting destination that’s also culturally rich, then Sharjah is the perfect choice for a traditional yet invigorating escape in the UAE. And if you’ve settled down as a digital nomad in the United Arab Emirates, then Sharjah makes for an easy trip!

In this guide, I’m going to give you the complete rundown on what to do in Sharjah, and how to make the most of your trip .

My Personal Thoughts on Sharjah, UAE

I traveled to Sharjah recently, the third-largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates. I was truly impressed with this dynamic city – an exciting mix of modern and traditional sights.

As I strolled around the city, I was enthralled by everything from picture-perfect mosques to modern malls and antiquity-laden museums.

With Dubai airport only 10 miles away to the west, I thought a trip to Sharjah would make for an interesting day trip, but I soon realized it deserved more than just a few hours of my time – this city has so much that’s worth exploring!

Top Things to Do in Sharjah, UAE

Sharjah, UAE is an absolute must-see destination. From its immaculate mosques to its otherworldy desert landscapes, Sharjah offers everything you would want from an Arab Emirate.

In the section below, I’ll share what I believe are the top attractions in Sharjah .

1. Al Noor Island

Al Noor Island is an oasis of beauty and calm that you can’t help but photograph!

Located just 10 minutes away from the Heart of Sharjah, Al Noor island is surrounded by the Khalid Lagoon and packed with many attractions.

Feel like wandering through the lush gardens filled with sculptures, botanical art installations and winding paths?

Spend an afternoon exploring this enchanting place and discover three different areas: floral trails, water fountain gardens, and a butterfly house.

Take some time to admire the colourful lights that cascade over the island creating a dream-like atmosphere; or take in the amazing wide range of sculptures, including the egg-shaped OVO installation that lights up at night.

You can even visit a dedicated children’s playground to keep little ones entertained, or try the trampoline walkway too!

2. Souq Al Shanasiyah

Souq Al Shanasiyah is a great place to start exploring the city’s cultural side and should be top of your list of things to do in Sharjah.

One of the region’s oldest and most vibrant soukss has been given a makeover and has been transformed into a shopping destination for stylish furniture, homeware, prayer beads, Arabic perfumes and oils, and kandoras and abayas made to order.

It’s here you’ll find lots of eclectic souvenirs, jewelry, and traditional clothing from all around the region – browse, bargain and marvel at the exhibits on offer in between walking trips along the bustling streets.

After walking through the impressive souk, you can reward yourself with a coffee at the Chedi Al Bait Cafe or sample the delicious Emirati cuisine at the Arabic Tea House .

3. House of Wisdom

If you’re looking for a unique and educational experience, then the House of Wisdom in Sharjah, UAE is a must-visit.

The House of Wisdom is a beautifully modern building, designed by the legendary architects Foster & Partners. Inside, you can explore a hugely impressive two-storey library and cultural centre, which is home to over 80,000 books.

From Islamic calligraphy to astronomy, you can learn about the history of the region and the culture of the people.

The House of Wisdom also features a futuristic fabrication machine that allows you to print your own book within 5 minutes. If you have your own book and want to become a published author – now’s your chance!

My visit to the House of Wisdom in Sharjah in 2023 was one of the most memorable experiences I had in Sharjah. Not only did I get to explore and learn about the culture and history of the UAE, but I also got to have a delightful lunch at their on-site cafe Chie .

4. Holy Quran Academy

The Holy Quran Academy is a stunningly beautiful complex and the largest of its kind in the world.

With students from over 63 countries learning remotely, it is a truly international experience.

You can visit to explore the many museums dotted around the complex, or marvel at the grand interior of the building for hours on end.

Entrance to the Holy Quran Academy is completely free, but it’s best to let them know in advance so they can manage capacity.

5. The Rain Room

The Rain Room is a permanent modern art installation, uniquely available all-year round in Sharjah.

Created by the London and Berlin-based Random International, the Rain Room art installation has been displayed at some of the world’s most famous museums, including MoMA in New York and Barbican in London.

The only place it’s based permanently, however, is Sharjah!

With 2,500 liters of self-cleaning, recycled water and trigger sensors to pause the falling water, visitors can enjoy an unparalleled experience of walking through falling rain without getting wet.

Supported by the Sharjah Art Foundation and associated with the Sharjah Art Museum, the Rain Room is understandable one of the city’s most popular attractions.

6. Sharjah Safari

After opening their doors in February 2022, Sharjah Safari is now the largest Safari in the world outside of Africa.

It’s the perfect spot for all adventure lovers, offering a rare opportunity to observe the endemic wildlife of Africa in an environment similar to their natural habitat.

Home to more than 120 species of African animals, including lions, elephants, giraffes, black and white rhinoceros, and a 8000 hectare park supporting up to 50,000 animals – Sharjah Safari is an animal lover’s paradise.

I was pleasantly impressed by the level of care and thought put into Sharjah Safari. The park itself is actually far larger, and better maintained, than any of the private game reserves I’ve visited in South Africa.

The landscape of the entire park was built with attention to detail, and you could easily forget that you’re not actually in Africa!

Overall, an experience I would highly recommend for anyone that wants a taste of a ‘real’ safari.

7. Heart of Sharjah

The Heart of Sharjah is the cultural centre of Sharjah. It’s the place where people first settled here, and has since been renovated into a cultural experience for visitors.

We spent the morning learning about the origins and traditions of Arabic coffee, followed of course by a wonderful tasting session (along with endless dates!).

You can also visit the Bait Al Naboodah museum to learn about the history of pearling in Sharjah , an important aspect of the Emirate’s history.

This area is also the home of the Chedhi al Bait Hotel , so you could coincide this visit with an afternoon tea at their café and then explore the nearby Souq al Shanisayah .

8. Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization

Housed in a building just as impressive as its collection, the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is located on the Corniche, just north of the Heart of Sharjah district.

Spread over two levels, the museum’s seven galleries cover aspects of the Islamic faith and the achievements of Arab scientists and astronomers, as well as a chronological overview of Islamic arts and crafts such as textiles and jewellery.

Among the many highlights are an astrolabe, manuscripts, ceramics, coins, a gold-embroidered curtain for the door of the Holy Ka’ba and a stunning mosaic inside the central dome detailing the zodiac constellations.

The building is incredibly beautiful and well worth a visit, even if museums are not normally your thing.

You can add this in to your Sharjah itinerary while also visiting the Heart of Sharjah .

9. Mleiha Desert Experience

Mleiha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-see for anyone interested in the UAE’s ancient history and desert landscapes.

The Mleiha Archaeological Centre, which opened in 2016, displays a number of ancient artifacts and more, giving visitors a glimpse into the past. Discoveries here include Bronze Age tombs, pre-Islamic forts, pottery, iron tools and plenty of camel skeletons!

Those looking for a bit more adventure can also try a huge range of desert activities available here, from desert 4×4 Jeep safari tours, to dune buggies, desert glamping and even star-gazing.

This was my absolute favourite part of our time in Sharjah. The glamping accommodation we had was top notch and I’ve never seen a night-sky so clear.

We were even lucky enough to see Jupiter’s rings during our stargazing session!

After a sunset session of ‘ Dune Bashing ‘ around the aptly named Fossil Rock , we spent the evening with traditional music and even a full Emirati home-style cooked meal (delicious!).

Then, it was time to wind down after our mind-blowing few days in Sharjah, and enjoying some Arabic tea around a campfire.

BONUS: Sharjah Light Festival

If you happen to be in Sharjah at the right time, you need to see Sharjah’s epic Light Festival.

Every year, the city of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates is illuminated with a spectacular display of lights, music and artistry.

The Sharjah Light Festival is an annual event that brings together light installations, live performances and interactive experiences for the whole family.

Walking through the illuminated streets of Sharjah is like stepping into a fairytale . Everywhere you look, the vibrant colors of the light displays shine against the night sky.

With each step, the city comes to life in a new and interesting way – from mesmerizing projections on the city’s iconic landmarks, to interactive installations that respond to your movements.

The Sharjah Light Festival is a wonderful opportunity to explore the city in a different light. Whether you’re looking for a romantic evening stroll or a fun-filled night out with the family, you’re sure to find something special here.

It’s a chance to make magical memories and experience the city in a brand new way.

Where To eat in Sharjah

As a traveler to Sharjah, UAE, I found all sorts of wonderful dining experiences. From native dishes, such as Chebab , to international dining experiences like the Japanese restaurant Origami, there is something here for everyone’s tastebuds.

In this section, I will tell you about all the best places we ate at in Sharjah.

1. Arabian Tea House

When it comes to the local fare, Sharjah won’t disappoint your tastebuds. The traditional cuisine here is all about ingredients that are fresh and locally sourced, with hearty spices and flavors.

One of my favourite meals during our time in Sharjah was at the Arabian Tea House in Souk al Shanasiyah.

The food here was unlike any Arabic food I’ve tried before, and my favourite dishes in particular were Salona and Harees .

TOP TIP: Another popular Emirati dish to try is chebab – tender flatbreads cooked on an open fire then served with salad or yogurt.

2. Shababeek Lebanese Restaurant

I simply couldn’t come to the Middle East and not have some Lebanese food. It’s my all-time favourite cuisine, and fortunately Shabebeek did not disappoint.

This charming restaurant offers a wide selection of traditional dishes that will tantalize your taste buds. From succulent kebabs to creamy hummus and flavorful falafel, everything is cooked to perfection.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff are friendly and attentive. Whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner for two or a fun night out with friends, you can’t go wrong with the Lebanese Shababeek.

If you have the chance to visit Shababeek, be sure to try:

• Fattoush salad made with fried flatbread pieces;
• Ghuzi – rice stuffed chicken or sheep served in tomato sauce alongside vegetables;
• Tabouleh – chopped parsley salad;
• Mahshi warak enab – vine leaves stuffed with rice;
• Hummus and kibbeh – minced lamb balls fried in spicy oil for some truly authentic flavours!

3. Origami Restaurant

If you’re looking for a truly unique dining experience, then you have to check out Origami in Sharjah. This Japanese restaurant offers a delectable selection of sushi, Japanese fusion dishes and signature desserts.

The menu is full of flavorful and innovative dishes that will tantalize your taste buds. And make sure to save room for their signature origami-shaped dessert – it’s a must-try!

We had a hugely delicious set menu meal, excellent service throughout the night and a delightful evening in this alternative Japanese restaurant.

4. Other Local Restaurants

When it comes to eating out in Sharjah, there is no shortage of local restaurants to choose from.

From cheap and cheerful family-run establishments to chilled out eateries and high-end restaurants, there’s something to suit every budget in this Emirati city.

Locals enjoy gathering at traditional Arabian street cafes filled with music and conversation, while visitors are often more contented with the plentiful buffet spreads found in major hotels.

Whatever type of culinary experience you’re seeking, Sharjah has it covered.

Where To Stay In Sharjah

During my time in Sharjah, we stayed at and got to explore 4 different hotels in the state. While I cannot speak for every hotel in Sharjah, I found all of these places to be incredible hotels with fantastic amenities.

Here are my thoughts of each hotel we stayed at in Sharjah.

1. Hilton Double Tree

This modern Hilton hotel was a great start to the trip, complete with futuristic rooms that automatically lightup as you walk through them!

The best part about the whole stay though was the incredible view over Al Noor island from my room.

The staff were all friendly and helpful, and the room we stayed in was comfortable and spacious. The buffet breakfast was also delicious and there was plenty of Arabic and Western food to choose from.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a convenient place to stay in Sharjah.

As an added bonus, the Hilton Double Tree is only 10 minutes drive from Dubai airport.

2. Chedi Al Bait

This hotel is clearly very luxurious and opulent, with beautiful decor and stunning views of the city.

The rooms looked spacious and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The pool and spa facilities looked great, and the Cafe I tried at the front had delicious food.

While we didn’t get to stay there on this occasion, we had a full site visit and after inspecting the various facilities, the hotel looks like an incredible place to stay if you have the budget for it.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a luxurious stay, mixed with Arabic tradition, in the cultural heart of Sharjah.

3. Mysk Al Badayer Desert Retreat

The Mysk desert retreat was a complete experience and my favourite hotel stay of the entire trip!

The atmosphere was peaceful, the staff were friendly and helpful and we had our own private pool looking out over the dunes.

We had both lunch and breakfast here and I can comfortably say that the food was delicious. I would happily have Arabic food for breakfast, or every meal, so the dining here suited me perfectly.

I would definitely recommend this desert retreat to anyone looking for a unique experience in Sharjah.

4. Mleiha Glamping

Now we get to the desert glamping part of this section. All I can say is… what a place!

This is by far the nicest desert glamping experience I’ve ever had, with a level of luxury that I am usually looking over with envy at.

The tents were huge and the double beds (yes, double beds) we very comfortable.

The views of the desert were stunning, the staff were helpful and so hospitable with offering us endless Arabic coffees, and the evening Emirati BBQ was beyond delicious.

My Final Thoughts on Sharjah

As I wrap up my travels in Sharjah – and we come to the end of this Sharjah travel guide – I must say that it was truly an incredible experience.

Not only did I find the historical sites to be remarkably intriguing , but I also came to appreciate the modern city that Sharjah has become.

The culture and the locals were friendly and welcoming , and I cannot wait to return someday to explore more of what this city has to offer.

The impressive buildings, vibrant Souqs and tradition mixed with modern lifestyle are just a few of the unique features of Sharjah that makes it such a special destination.

Overall Sharjah is an underrated destination in UAE full of attractions just waiting to be explored.

• You can drive in your own car

UAE: Gold prices fall in Dubai on the weekend

Gold prices fell half a dirham in Dubai at the opening of the markets on Saturday.

According to Dubai Jewellery Group data, the 24K variant of the yellow metal was trading at Dh281.75 compared to last night’s close of Dh282.25 per gram. Among the other variants of the yellow metal, 22K opened at Dh260.75, 21K at Dh252.5 and 18K at Dh216.5 per gram.

Prices marginally changed when compared to the start of the week.

Globally, gold closed nearly unchanged at $2,326.73 per ounce on Friday.

George Pavel, general manager at Capex.com Middle East, said the Federal Reserve's stance on maintaining high interest rates for an extended period has kept US Treasury bond yields elevated and the US dollar strong which weighed on gold during the last few weeks.

“Despite the Fed's indication of only one rate cut in 2024, markets continue to see a start in cuts as early as September followed by another in December. If cuts materialise, gold could find more support. However, the uncertainty could continue to fuel some volatility,” he said.

Traders were also cautious due to the upcoming US presidential debate on Thursday and the release of the US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index on Friday.

“Persistent geopolitical tensions and political uncertainties continue to support gold's status as a safe-haven asset. Upcoming elections in France, the UK, and the US are likely to fuel risk aversion, potentially benefiting gold prices,” added Pavel.
