Star Trek Discovery is coming back, and here's what we know so far

The bridge crew in star trek discovery season 4

Star Trek Discovery season 4 is coming, and it’s coming very soon. The show that helped restart the franchise for television is still going strong, and is making itself at home on Paramount Plus.

This new season continues the adventures of the Discovery after a 900 plus year trip into the future, where they discovered the Federation in ruins and Starfleet only a shadow of its former self after a galaxy-wide cataclysm known as "The Burn."

  • Everything we know about Star Trek Picard season 2
  • How to watch the Star Trek movies in order
  • Plus: How to watch The Walking Dead: World Beyond season 2 online

Nobody could have expected what the source of the Burn was, but the Discovery crew were instrumental in figuring it all out. What’s more, in the process they found a source of enough dilithium fuel to power the galaxy’s warp drives for years. Something that finally brought Michael Burnham into the Captain’s chair.

Here’s everything we know about Star Trek Discovery’s fouth season, including cast, plot, release date, and more.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 release date

As part of the ‘Star Trek Day’ celebrations on September 8, Paramount announced that Discovery would be returning on November 18 in the United States. Since CBS All Access rebranded as Paramount Plus earlier this year, that’s where Discovery will make its home in the United States.

Internationally (except Canada), Netflix holds the rights to Discovery, and typically releases new episodes within 24 hours of their U.S. debut. Canadians can watch the new episodes on the CTV Sci-Fi channel, and in the past new episodes have aired on the same day as in the U.S.

In other words everyone, no matter their country, will get to watch new episodes almost as soon as they’re available.

Star Trek Discovery season 4 cast

  • Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham
  • Doug Jones as Saru
  • Anthony Rapp as Lt Cmdr Paul Stamets
  • Wilson Cruz as Dr Hugh Culber
  • David Ajala as Book
  • Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly
  • Blu del Barrio as Adira

  • Patrick Kwok-Choo as Lt Gen Rhys
  • Ronnie Rowe as Lt R.A. Bryce
  • Sara Mitich as Lt Nilsson
  • David Cronenberg as Kovich

Discovery has accumulated rather a large cast over the years, including a handful more after the crew jumped into the future. But we do know that all the major players from the previous seasons will have parts to play, including former Captain Saru who was seen leaving the ship during the third season’s finale.

Ian Alexander has also confirmed his character, the Trill Gray, will have a larger presence in the story going forward, despite officially being dead and visible only to his partner Adira — since Gray’s consciousness stored inside the Tal symbiont.

Finally Kenneth Mitchell, who played various different characters in the first three seasons of Discovery, has confirmed he will also be returning in a brand new role. However this role will be “unique” in his words, to account for the fact ALS has limited his ability to move and speak unaided. Since Mitchell’s character Aurellio, the Emerald Chain scientist working to uncover the secrets of Discovery's spore drive, survived season 3 in tact, it’s possible he may also return in some capacity.

Book’s cat Grudge is also returning, which is the most important piece of news of all.

Star Trek Discovery season 4 trailer

While Star Trek Day 2021 didn’t bring a new Discovery trailer along, we got our first look at the fourth season back in April.

The trailer reveals that there are some pretty high stakes this season (again), and shows off some of the familiar faces returning to the final frontier.

Star Trek season 4 plot

There’s a lot we still don’t know about Discovery’s fourth season, though the trailer revealed that the high-stakes antics of the crew never seem to end. This season is focussing on some sort of gravitational anomaly in space, which seems to have the ability to cause all kinds of havoc.

It’s also five light years wide, which is pretty darn big, possibly even planet-killing big, should it wind up in the wrong place.

Unfortunately that’s about all we know regarding the season’s plot, and there’s not much to speculate on either. That said it seems likely there’s going to be a lot of action, which Discovery has always been heavy on, and no doubt Burnham will clash with her superiors several times — like she always does.

Everything we know about Star Trek: Discovery Season 4

Here's what's next for Burnham and the gang.

Captain Michael Burnham in Discovery Season 4

After an epic and upbeat Season 3 , Star Trek: Discovery has lightly tapped the reset button again. Only this time, there's not a galaxy-wide mystery, the nostalgic appearance of a famous starship , or even a brand-new setting. After the Season 3 finale — "That Hope Is You Part 2," Season 4 of Discovery is poised to settle into the 32nd Century, and seemingly, get back to doing what Star Trek is famous for; a show about the crew of a space ship, having exciting adventures week after week.

Now that the crew of the USS Discovery has a new captain and a new (loosely defined) mission, what should DISCO fans expect for Season 4? The short answer is a lot .

The finale of Discovery Season 3 has opened up the series in a way that has never happened since it debuted in 2017. From the release date to the cast, to the directors and the writers, here's what to expect from Star Trek: Discovery Season 4. Let's fly!

When is the Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 release date?

Back on November 2, 2020, it was revealed that the cast and crew started filming Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery . This means that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Discovery Season 4 began filming roughly nine months after Season 3 wrapped in February 2020. As of April 5, 2021, it was been confirmed that Discovery Season 4 will debut sometime in 2021, though it’s not clear exactly when. Right now because Lower Decks Season 2 is set to hit in August 2021, Fall 2021 seems right for Discovery Season 4.

Is there a trailer for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4?

Yes! As of April 5, 2021, Paramount+ revealed a short teaser trailer for Discovery Season 4 . It features new uniforms, a new mission for the USS Discovery , which seems centered on a large lightyear-spanning gravitational anomaly. Watch it above!

Who is writing Discovery Season 4?

Unlike previous seasons of Discovery , there appears to be little to no turnover within the creative team. As with Season 3, Michelle Paradise will be the showrunner for Season 4, with Alex Kurtzman serving as the executive producer. Much of the writing staff is thought to be the same, which will probably include Kirsten Beyer , Bo Yeon Kim, Erika Lippoldt, and Kalinda Vazquez , among other fan favorites.

Who is directing Discovery Season 4?

As with all previous seasons of Discovery , both Johnathan Frakes and Olatunde Osunsanmi are expected to return to direct episodes. Sadly, Picard and long-time Discovery director Hanelle Culpepper revealed in 2020 that she wouldn't be able to direct episodes of Discovery Season 4 due to scheduling conflicts, adding that she will "miss my Star Trek family." In addition to directing the first two episodes of Picard , Culpepper also directed the pivotal Discovery Season 3 episode, "Forget Me Not."

Who is in the Discovery Season 4 cast?

The vast majority of the Discovery Season 3 cast is expected to return for Season 4 including:

  • Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham
  • David Ajala as Clevland Booker
  • Wilson Cruz as Dr. Culber
  • Mary Wiseman as Ensign Tilly
  • Doug Jones as Saru
  • Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Stamets
  • Ian Alexander as Gray Tal
  • Blu del Barrio as Adira Tal
  • Tig Notaro as Jett Reno
  • Oyin Oladejo as Joann Owosekun
  • Emily Coutts as Keyla Detmer
  • Sara Mitich as Nilsson
  • Patrick Kwok-Choon as Gen Rhys
  • Ronnie Rowe Jr. as Ronald A. Bryce
  • David Cronenberg as Kovich
  • Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance (Unconfirmed)

The biggest cast member not returning is Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou. The character is getting her own Trek spinoff called Section 31 . Georgiou left Discovery via the Guardian of Forever in "Terra Firma Part 2," marking the second time Yeoh has "left" Discovery . Prime Universe Philippa Georgiou was killed by Klingons in the second episode of Discovery ever, "The Battle at the Binary Stars."

Also (probably) not returning is Noah Averbach-Katz, who played Ryn, since he got vaporized. (Then again, he could play a new character!) Finally, although she had top billing in the first half of the season, Rachael Ancheril's Commander Nhan departed the USS Discovery in "Die Trying." Nhan could technically return since she's still working for the Federation but in an interview in 2020 , Ancheril made it seem like Nhan probably was on that seed ship for good.

The Season 4 teaser trailer also revealed a new Cardaissan-esque character (unnamed), as well as the return of Vulcan/Ni’Var President T’Rina played by Tara Rosling. Also, it looks like Sonja Sohn will once again return as Gabrielle Burnham, Michael Burnham’s mother.

What is the plot of Discovery Season 4?

Unlike Season 2, Discovery Season 3 didn't end on a huge cliffhanger. For the first time, the plot and tone of a new Discovery season is pretty open-ended. The ship has a new (yet familiar) captain, the crew has spiffy new uniforms, the Federation is on the rebound, and Starfleet is back to helping people out whenever possible. When Burnham asks Tilly "What's the latest?" the implication is basically that the next Season 4 could go back to a planet-of-the-week format, similar to TOS, TNG, Voyager, or Enterprise . In fact, showrunner Michelle Paradise said that because Season 3 was loosely more episodic than Season 4, fans should expect the trend to continue into Season 4.

In terms of character arcs, we'll certainly need to get a sense of what Saru is doing on Kaminar, and if he'll ever return to the Federation. Further, the idea that Gray can finally be seen through holographic tech is something Paradise has said will "pay off" in Season 4.

A few fairly big plot points still need to be resolved in Season 4, the most intriguing of which are the connections between Discovery and the 2018 Short Treks episode "Calypso" — in which a totally vacant USS Discovery is being maintained by a fully sentient computer in an even more distant future.

Paradise explained it to Inverse like this:

""Calypso' has now become part of our canon. And it takes place far beyond our time now even, in Season 3. And yeah, eventually we'll have to find our way there. So that short, in the grand scheme of things, fits together as a piece. In certainly in Season 3, we were beginning that process with Zora — who isn't quite the Zora we saw in 'Calypso' — but we were getting that process started a little bit of her sparking to life in episode 4, and then coming in and having a bit more of a presence in 12 and 13. So, we're starting our way there."

The first teaser trailer revealed that some of Season 4 will be focused on the crew figuring out a large “gravitational anomaly,” which will require the Federation to unite with non-Federation worlds. This will include at least one trip to Ni’Var (Vulcan) and it appears that both Tilly and Burnham will get those awesome Romulan swords, first introduced by the Qowat Milat in Picard Season 1. Does this mean Tilly will practice the way of “absolute candor” and constantly tell the truth no matter what? Basically, she kind of already does, right?

Star Trek Discovery Sonequa Martin-Green

“ Star Trek : Discovery” will go where no “Trek” show has gone before, in more ways than one, in its fourth season, as the newest trailer for the Paramount Plus series revealed.

Season 4 of “Discovery” picks up after Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) was promoted to captain in the Season 3 finale, the first time a Black woman has sat in the captain’s chair in a live-action “Trek” series.

Set nearly 1,000 years further into the future than any other “Trek” series, Season 4 will find the crew of the Discovery contending with a massive anomaly that is five light-years in size, threatening to destroy life throughout the galaxy. The event is so catastrophic that it pulls together worlds that are in the Federation and outside of it.

Season 4 will premiere on Nov. 18 on Paramount Plus in the U.S., on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel and the Crave streaming service in Canada, and on Netflix in 190 other countries.

During the “Star Trek Day” celebration on Sept. 8 , Cruz, del Barrio and Alexander talked about the unique — and historic — relationship between Adira and Gray, who are the first regular characters on a “Trek” project who are, respectively, non-binary and transgender. Cruz said in Season 4, Dr. Culber will fulfill his promise that Gray will have a corporeal body. (Through a particularly “Trek”-ian plot twist, Gray spent the bulk of Season 3 as a non-corporal being perceptible only to Adira.)

“It’s been a really fantastic way to spend a season, to create this family where people are relying on each other and supporting each other and creating the world that we all deserve to live in,” Cruz said.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4: Release Date, Cast, And More

Star Trek Sonequa Martin-Green

(Welcome to ...And More , our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)

"Star Trek: Discovery" is about to boldly go into its fourth season, as Paramount+ continues to amass more ships in its fleet of streaming "Star Trek" shows . Sonequa Martin-Green, long since recovered from her zombification on "The Walking Dead," is back to captain the flagship, "Discovery," for season 4. Here's what we know about the upcoming episodes.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Release Date and Where You Can Watch It

Star Trek Discovery Anthony Rapp

"Star Trek: Discovery" season 4 flies onto the Paramount+ streaming service on Thursday, November 18, 2021. You can watch it there in the U.S. if you have a subscription.

The international rights to "Star Trek" shows are split between Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Unfortunately, global "Star Trek" fans don't have the same one-stop shopping option as Stateside viewers. However, in most countries outside the U.S. you can stream "Discovery" on Netflix and "Star Trek: Picard" on Amazon.

What Is Star Trek: Discovery?

Star Trek Discovery Season 4

Though Paramount+ has expanded its streaming "Star Trek" universe to include four other shows — including "Picard" and the "Discovery" spin-off "Strange New Worlds" — "Star Trek: Discovery" is the show that started it all. It launched back in 2017 when Paramount+ was still calling itself CBS All Access. Trades reported at the time that "Discovery" prompted a record number of signups, and the show has been cruising through space ever since.

The series follows the adventures of the USS Discovery crew, led by Martin-Green's character, Michael Burnham. Season 1 revealed Burnham's backstory as a first officer turned mutineer turned prisoner turned parolee and xeno-anthropologist. She initially served as the science specialist aboard the USS Discovery under the anti-Klingon Starfleet captain, Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs). In "Star Trek: Discovery" season 4, Burnham has moved up to the rank of full captain herself.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Showrunners and Cast

Star Trek Discovery Saru

Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise serve as the co-showrunners for "Star Trek: Discovery." We don't have much info yet on who is in the writer's room or directing the episodes for season 4.

In addition to Martin-Green, "Discovery" season 4 stars Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, and Wilson Cruz, all of whom have been with the show since the beginning.

David Ajala, Blu del Barrio, and Ian Alexander are also returning, along with some high-profile guest stars, including David Cronenberg, Oded Fehr, and Tig Notaro. That's the same Cronenberg who helmed films like "The Dead Zone," "The Fly," "A History of Violence," and "Eastern Promises." He showed off his acting chops in season 3 and will do so again in season 4.

There's also a cat onboard the Discovery, though if certain other non-"Star Trek," space-faring adventures have taught us anything, it's that what looks like a cat in space may in fact be a fearsome creature with a pocket dimension inside its body. Beware space cats.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Trailer

"Five light years across. That's the size of the gravitational anomaly ..." that Captain Burnham and her crew are dealing with in "Star Trek: Discovery" season 4. In season 3, the show grappled with the aftermath of a 900-year time-jump to the future. As a result, "Discovery" is now far removed from other shows on the "Star Trek" timeline and "ready to seek out new life," per the "Trek" mission statement.

You can see the first teaser trailer for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 4 above.

  • Release date

Star Trek : Discovery season 4 will warp onto Paramount Plus on November 18, 2021, and a new trailer has dropped as the date gets closer.

With Michael Burnham now installed as the captain of the ship – the show's fourth commanding officer in as many years – Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will see the crew continuing to explore the distant future of the 32nd century. Having solved the mystery of the so-called “Burn” that had rendered warp travel impossible, and defeated the criminal empire of the Emerald Chain, attentions should now be turning to restoring the Federation to its former glories. Unfortunately, it sounds like a new antagonist is about to get in the way, in the form of a dangerous gravitational anomaly five light years across.

With Saru, Tilly, Stamets, Culber and all the principal bridge crew back in action, Star Trek: Discovery 4 is set to continue the franchise's ongoing adventures on the final frontier. Here's everything you need to know, but be warned – Spoilers lie ahead for anyone yet to watch the previous seasons.

Release date: Star Trek Discovery season 4 will release on November 18 in the US. The show will roll out on Paramount Plus in the US, and is expected to stream on Netflix elsewhere.

Story: With Burnham now installed as captain, as mentioned above, the USS Discovery will contend with a massive gravitational anomaly in the 32nd century – the idea is that the crew is dealing with a massive problem to solve this season rather than a specific villain.

Is there a trailer? Yes. A first teaser for Discovery season 4 debuted in April 2021, and another full trailer dropped in October 2021.

The show will release on Paramount Plus , the rebranded version of CBS All Access. Outside the US we expect that – like the previous seasons – the show will stream on Netflix, where it's usually available within hours of its American debut.

The previous season had barely even started airing when Star Trek: Discovery season 4 got the official greenlight on October 16, 2020. Two weeks later, on November 2, production got underway at the show’s Toronto base, and continued until August 2021 – the end of shooting was confirmed in a tweet from showrunner Michelle Paradise .

Inevitably, Covid-19 restrictions were a major factor in the shoot. For starters, as dictated by Canadian rules, the cast had to isolate for two weeks before coming to set.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 also reportedly  took advantage of a pipeline put in place for the previous season, after coronavirus restrictions kicked in. “Our editors, miraculously and heroically, took their editing bays into their living rooms,” Alex Kurtzman, executive producer and overseer of Star Trek’s current raft of TV shows, told IndieWire . “We also scored the entire season [3], mixed the entire season, color-timed the entire season, all from [a] laptop .”

Reports suggest the process was further refined on Star Trek: Discovery season 4, with Space.com revealing that the show will make use of the groundbreaking augmented reality LED screens pioneered by The Mandalorian . Suddenly the fact that travel for location filming was off the table didn't seem quite so much of a problem...

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 cast

This is the current roll call for Star Trek: Discovery season 4:

  • Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham
  • Doug Jones as Saru
  • Anthony Rapp as Lt Cmdr Paul Stamets
  • Wilson Cruz as Dr Hugh Culber
  • David Ajala as Book
  • Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly
  • Blu del Barrio as Adira
  • Ian Alexander as Gray
  • Oded Fehr as Admiral Charles Vance
  • Oyin Oladejo as Lt Joann Owosekun
  • Emily Coutts as Lt Keyla Detmer
  • Patrick Kwok-Choo as Lt Gen Rhys
  • Ronnie Rowe as Lt R.A. Bryce
  • Sara Mitich as Lt Nilsson
  • David Cronenberg as Kovich

It’s a case of ‘as you were’, with most of the established cast returning for another tour of duty – presumably they’re excited to be wearing new-look, Trek-appropriate primary-colored uniforms that don’t look quite so much like tracksuits.

It goes without saying that Sonequa Martin-Green is back as Captain Michael Burnham, and even though her predecessor in the big chair, Saru, has relocated to his home planet of Kaminar, Doug Jones still has a part to play. “It felt important for all of our characters to find new layers for them, to find new place for them to go, new things for our actors to play, and new ways for the characters to go,” showrunner Michelle Paradise told TVInsider . “[In season 3 we highlighted] that Saru hasn’t had a huge connection to Kaminar since leaving, and in a season that is all about connection – family connection and cultural connection – it seemed like an organic place to explore that theme with him.”

Among the lead cast, Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz reprise their roles as Lt Cmdr Paul Stamets and Dr Hugh Culber, while season 3 standout David Ajala is back as the 32nd century’s most famous feline owner, Cleveland ‘Book’ Booker. (Sadly, a Grudge the Cat spin-off is yet to be announced.) And surely Mary Wiseman’s Sylvia Tilly will be looking to make the First Officer role her own.

“[Saru] sees strength in [Tilly] she doesn’t quite see in herself necessarily,” Paradise said in TVInsider. “Then, [we watched] her over the course of the season become more confident in herself to the place where she’s ultimately able to serve as Number One, and having to essentially be acting captain in this crisis situation, where she handles herself beautifully. What does that mean to come is, I’m sure, a question she’ll be asking herself and we’ll be exploring in Season 4.”

The supporting bridge crew will surely be hoping to have a few more stories of their own, continuing their slow evolution from background players to actual characters – now we know that Lt Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) can hold her breath for 10 minutes, the sky’s the limit. It’ll be interesting to see what – if anything – is in store for Lt Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts), Lt Gen Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon), Lt R.A. Bryce (Ronnie Rowe) and Lt Nilsson (Sara Mitich).

Third season newcomer Blu del Barrio also returns as Adira, human host of the Trill symbiont Tal, along with their boyfriend, Gray (Ian Alexander). Dr Culber’s efforts to give Gray – who can only be seen and heard by Adira – physical form will be a big part of the season, as Gray becomes more and more integrated with the crew. “For season 4 I’ve had a lot more hands-on involvement, like my suggestions for the future of Gray,” Alexander told Inverse . “They already have so much planned. Michelle [Paradise] and Alex [Kurtzman] already have this vision that I’ve very, very excited for everyone to be able to see.”

“Culber does make a promise in our season three finale to Gray that, ‘You will be truly seen,’” Paradise said on a Discovery panel at Outfest (via TrekMovie ). “And we absolutely do pay that off in season four. That storyline and making sure we pay it off is hugely important.” It was confirmed by Wilson Cruz (Dr Culber) at Star Trek Day (via Variety ) that Gray will be gaining a corporeal form in Star Trek: Discovery season 4.

Anthony Rapp, who plays Stamets, added that Stamets, Culber, Adira and Gray will become a family in Star Trek: Discovery season 4: “Parenting – they’re not children but they are young people – the pressures of how to be available to be a mentor or guide or parent in the face of job responsibilities and sort of crises, that’s an interesting sort of sub-thread through the through the season… There’s more in the ways Paul and Hugh continue to evolve in their relationship. This is certainly explored also in this season.”

And there’ll be at least two familiar faces at Federation headquarters, where Oded Fehr (Admiral Charles Vance) and legendary movie director David Cronenberg (the mysterious Kovich) will be pulling some strings behind the scenes.

Michelle Paradise is keeping her cards closer to her chest than The Next Generation crew at one of their regular poker games, though she did admit to TVInsider in January 2021 that the Discovery crew are hanging around in the 32nd century, rather than looking for a way back to their original pre-Kirk-and-Spock timeline. “I don’t expect that,” she said. “All of [the crew] knew going into that at the end of season 2 that this is a one-way trip. Now that they are here, we’re not looking to go back.”

What does that mean for plotlines? “I don’t want to speak specifically to themes, but we do have them!” she joked to ComicBook.com . “I think season 4 will absolutely continue the kinds of things we were doing in season 3, in that we do have very strong themes that we’re exploring. Star Trek: The Original Series explored present-day things via sci-fi. And that’s what we did in season 3, and I think that’s just baked into what Star Trek does.

“Ultimately the thing that really resonates, I think, with people is, what are our characters experiencing? What are they going through? How are they connecting with one another? What are the challenges they’re facing and how do they overcome them individually and then as a family? All of that I think will continue.”

With the Emerald Chain out of the way, it looks like the threat in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will be rather different this time out. The trailer reveals that the crew is dealing with a gravitational anomaly “five light years across”, rather than a specific human or alien foe – a force that, as Tilly explains, “could go anywhere, and we may not have any kind of warning at all”.

“We’re actually exploring – we’re diving deep into science – in the fourth season, in a kind of new and interesting way,” said Kurtzman in a panel hosted by Deadline (via TrekMovie ). “There have been many kinds of villains over the course of Star Trek. What happens when the villain is not actually any kind of living, breathing entity, but something else? How do you solve that problem?”

Could we be looking at something technological Discovery season 2's hostile AI, Control? Or a lethal inorganic structure like the Crystalline Entity from Star Trek: The Next Generation? ScreenRant has suggested the rather plausible theory that the anomaly could be V’Ger, the rogue space probe from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. In the finale of that movie, V’Ger merged with USS Enterprise first officer Will Decker to attain a new level of consciousness – who knows what it might be capable of nearly a thousand years later...

We can expect Star Trek: Discovery season 4 to follow a similar structure to previous years, with each season based around a self-contained story arc, with just a few loose ends left untied.

“Discovery has that sort of serialized, season-long story baked into its DNA,” Paradise said in an interview with Inverse . “We also wanted to give the show a more episodic feel in season 3. We got to explore a story of the week or a villain of the week – it gives us time to explore some of our characters who we normally wouldn’t have time to explore. That was definitely a choice on our part and will continue on our show.”

Star Trek Discovery S3

What questions does Star Trek: Discovery season 4 need to answer?

With the origins of the so-called ‘Burn’ revealed – who’d have guessed it was caused by a grieving kid with a symbiotic relationship to a planet made of dilithium? – and Osyraa and her Emerald Chain defeated, Star Trek: Discovery season 4 flies into uncharted waters.

Hopefully that means that Discovery and the crew can use the spore drive to truly explore the strange new worlds of the 32nd century – though, given this show’s love of callbacks to earlier series, it’s almost inevitable we’ll meet some familiar faces and species. (The presence in the trailer of a Federation official – possibly the president – who has a mix of human and Cardassian facial features suggests that those long-standing Deep Space Nine foes may be up for a comeback, this time in the Starfleet camp.)

Part of Starfleet's remit will be rebuilding a Federation that's a shadow of what it was 900 years earlier. The trailer suggests that many worlds will have to pull together to defeat a threat that affects Federation and non-Federation “equally” – as Burnham puts it, “We are not in this alone”.

“The Federation is coming back together but it’s not fully back together,” Kurtzman told the aforementioned Deadline panel. “And so the continued mission of bringing other worlds in and meeting the criteria and standards of what it means to be a member of the Federation but also not to rob other cultures of their identity is something that we’ll explore.”

The biggest ongoing question Star Trek: Discovery season 4 needs to address is the nature of the ‘Sphere Data’, the ancient alien intelligence now integrated with Discovery’s databanks. Protecting it was the reason the ship made the one-way trip to the future in the first place, and it seems to be repaying the favor – first by helping the crew’s mental wellbeing, then by helping Tilly to forcibly eject the Emerald Chain from the ship. It’s a story that seems to be heading towards Short Trek episode ‘Calypso’, set in a distant future where Discovery is run by a sentient computer.

“‘Calypso’ is incredible,” Paradise told ComicBook.com . “And it is now a part of Trek canon , but specifically our show’s canon. It takes place many, many years beyond where our heroes are right now, and at some point, we will absolutely have to match up with that so that Discovery as a whole, including ‘Calypso’, all fits together as a piece.

“Certainly, bringing in that voice in episode four and having – we’ll call her Zora, she doesn't have a name at this point – but having her hide in the DOTs [helper robots on board Discovery] and be part of the story is the beginning of driving toward that. And eventually – who knows when? – we will absolutely have to make sure that we sync up with that.”

And then there’s the small matter of Stamets having issues with the way Burnham left his husband, Dr Culber, in a radiation-filled nebula in the season 3 finale. “I think that’s one they’ll get past in time,” Paradise said in TVLine .

Star Trek: Discovery ‘s new captain and her crew will be feeling the pressure when Season 4 hits later this year, according to a new trailer.

Paramount+ unveiled the trailer on Monday as part of Star Trek ‘s “First Contact Day” series of events, along with the news that Discovery will return for Season 4 sometime in 2021. In the trailer, Burnham — that’s now Captain Burnham to you — and the Discovery crew face an unprecedented threat: a “gravitational anomaly” that’s five light years across and wreaks havoc on everything in its path. “It could go anywhere,” Tilly warns, “and we may not have any kind of warning at all.” We see the Discovery ‘s interior torn down in shambles… but the new uniforms look good, at least.

“ With Federation and non-Federation worlds alike feeling the impact,” Burnham and her crew “must confront the unknown and work together to ensure a hopeful future for all,” per the official description. The trailer also gives us quick glimpses of Book, his cat Grudge… and Saru, with Doug Jones confirmed to return. (If you remember, Saru left the Discovery to return to his home planet of Kaminar at the end of last season, but co-showrunner Michelle Paradise told TVLine that “he’s definitely back in action for Season 4.”)

I like the new uniforms. Glad to see Saru in there, too!

Looking forward to it. The upcoming season looks like it’s going to be epic.

The fact that Burnham is captain and not in the brig for never listening to officers is amazing and just shows how much a mess this series really is.

I agree.. It is terrible

You don’t even watch the show.🙄

It cracks me up how people still whine about this show on every article despite having ragequit after the first ep of S1.

Silly comment. Why the heck are you watching?

Because season 2 was actually enjoyable and I was hoping they would redeem the character.

Instead they just have her step down and disobey order every episode. They made a freaking ensign second in command. That’s just a mess.

You mean like kirk did nearly every episode? Search for Spock, he stole the Enterprise, save the earth the following movie and got back his ship. It’s not a ‘mess’ they are following the originals template. Zeesh.

What? A Star Trek protagonist who defies the chain of command? You’re right, that *is* totally shocking! /s

Star Trek follows the rules of the US Navy and has for over 50 years.

Right until STD where she wasn’t just defying orders once like in the pilot, it was every episode over every damn thing. Not only would she be kicked out and stuck in a jail but she did it so often I wouldn’t be surprised if they shoved her out an airlock.

Evidently you never watched the original with kirk, spock, mccoy. Or the movies like 3 and 4.

Kirk was demoted for his activities in Star Treks III and IV, not promoted.

But as anyone who actually watched the films know, Kirk’s ‘demotion’ was actually a reward, since it got him back aboard the bridge, where he belongs. (A fact reinforced by his “never let them promote you” speech to Picard in Generations.)

@Clay & Kevin M: Did you both miss the part where Burnham saved the Federation by finding an alternative to destroying Qo’nos and ending a galactic war?

But the most important question is will Tully FINALLY get the promotion she deserves?! She can’t still be an ensign!

Lieutenant, I’m guessing, if she’s still first officer.

Oh no a gravitational anomaly threatening the entire universe? Considering the last galactic threat to human kind was a yell by a radioactive, temper tantrum throwing child, I’m going to guess that the gravitational anomaly is that someone farted just as they went to warp? Seems to be on par for this writing teams ability.

Sound a bit like the Delphic Expanse from Enterprise. We’ll have to see how they deal with it. Plus Burnham does what she does & in 3 Yrs becomes captain & Harry Kim who maybe mad one mistake in 7 Yr can’t even make lieutenant.

So glad they went back to the primary color uniforms. Those gray outfits from S3 were ugly. That said, the anomaly plot seems meh. I guess we’ll see.

Looks boring and even more ugly.

Great another grand mystery that they will fail land. Season 3 started so strong with mystery of no one having warp drive but ended up being caused by an emotional child throwing a fit

It was so bad. Why on earth they still produce this flop? No one is watching it. Even Trek fans gave up on it after second season. And this show looks super expensive, so they are losing tons of money on this one.

I love all sci-fi shows. But even for me this one was too much. Lead character is horrific, cant act, has no charisma to lead show. And she was as horrible on Walking Dead. That guy in rubber suit (Saru) acts million times better then her. And he has things on his face…

Burnham is the most unprofessional employee. Who openly violates direct orders from captain and higher officers and does what she wants. And still comes as winner because show made her Special One Who Is Always Wright About Everything So Everyone Must Listen To Her All The Time. And its so ridiculous.

  • Trivia The Starfleet vessels seen in the first season, including the Discovery, the Shenzou and the redesigned Enterprise, were all designed by production artist John Eaves. Eaves' work with Star Trek spans three decades. Probably his most notable contribution was the design of the Enterprise-E for Star Trek: First Contact (1996) .
  • Goofs With Michael being the adoptive sister of Spock, the series has many flashbacks to their childhood and upbringing on Vulcan. Spock's Vulcan half-brother, Sybok, does not appear nor is mention during these scenes. In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) , Spock says that he and Sybok grew up together. However, since it's never stated when Sybok joined Sarek's home - only that he did so following his mother's death - or when he was exiled from the family, it's not impossible Sybok moved in after Burnham, and left before she graduated (the two extremes of the flashbacks). Also, since Sybok was never mentioned before Star Trek V, it seems reasonable the family never spoke of him again after his estrangement.

star trek discovery trailer season 4

This 'Star Trek Discovery' Character Is a Deep-Cut 'DS9' Reference

  • Callum Keith Rennie joins Star Trek: Discovery as Kellerun Captain Rayner, revealing the obscure species from Deep Space Nine .
  • Rayner's Kellerun backstory is crucial to Rayner's characterization and mission, with the showrunner promising a focus on his personal history.
  • Discovery continues the tradition of exploring one-off alien races with new characters, adding depth and diversity to the final season.

Veteran actor Callum Keith Rennie will join the cast of the final season of Star Trek: Discovery as the alien Captain Rayner, and now we know what species he is. Fans have speculated that Rayner's pointed ears mark him as a Vulcan or a Romulan, but a new interview reveals that he is a member of the Kellerun, an obscure species from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . TrekCore.com has the details from SFX Magazine's feature on Discovery 's upcoming fifth season , which will premiere on Paramount+ early next month.

Rayner's species will apparently be important to his characterization and the mysterious mission he joins the USS Discovery crew for, as they race against time in the show's final bow. Says showrunner Michelle Paradise , "He’s Kellerun, which is a minor planet mentioned in one of the other iterations… we learn more about his personal backstory and how that plays into who he is, and why he is how he is. We learn about that as the season goes on, and the planet he’s from has a lot to do with that." It won't be the first time an important character on Discovery comes from a one-off alien race; Commander Nhan ( Rachael Ancheril ), who debuted in the series' second season, is a Barzan, a race that had up to that point only appeared in the third-season Next Generation episode "The Price".

Who Are the Kellerun?

The Kellerun made their first and (so far) only appearance in "Armageddon Game", which first aired in 1994 as part of Deep Space Nine 's second season. A species with distinctive large, pointed ears, they had been at war for centuries with their neighbors, the T'Lani, in a conflict that utilized the Harvesters, deadly biological weapons. After the two races made peace with each other, Starfleet sent in Deep Space Nine crew members Dr. Julian Bashir ( Alexander Siddig ) and Miles O'Brien ( Colm Meany ) to help dismantle the remaining Harvesters. However, the Kellerun and T'Lani insist that all knowledge pertaining to the Harvesters must be destroyed - which means killing Bashir and O'Brien, too. The two have to make a desperate race for survival as their friends try to save them from the two alien species.

Although the Kellerun did not appear on the series again, the episode established Bashir and O'Brien's friendship, which endured for the rest of the show's run. Canadian actor Callum Keith Rennie is a veteran of science fiction productions, having starred in Battlestar Galactica , Impulse , The X-Files , Jessica Jones , and The Umbrella Academy . Discovery will be his first Star Trek appearance.

Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season will premiere April 4, 2024 on Paramount+ , wehere past seasons are also streaming. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates, and watch the trailer for Discovery 's fifth season below.

‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ To Wrap Up With “Gigantic” Finale Episode

As Star Trek fandom waits for the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks , the production team is starting the final editing and preparation of the last ten episodes of the animated comedy debuting on Paramount+ on October 24. In new post-SDCC panel interviews, the showrunner and cast offered some insights into what we can expect.

Finale to be something very special

After four strong seasons of Lower Decks , the creative team is determined finish the show with the same wit, including a memorable series finale episode. Without revealing the actual plotline, Mike McMahan is eager to talk about the creation of the finale itself. McMahan describes the last show as carrying through the same humorous tone as the rest of the series, though he admits to re-writing portions of the script when it became clear that Lower Decks would not be renewed. The changes made were bittersweet, as he explains in an interview with Collider :

“We kept adding and adding and adding to the finale because nothing was ever satisfying enough, and there weren’t enough goodbyes to tell in a funny way. Ultimately, what we ended up with was a gigantic episode that’s really fun.”

In order to accommodate the extra story pages needed to resolve all those plotlines (and possibly open a few new ones for the future) the crew recorded an extra-long, story-dense finale that Tawny Newsome described as “a double-stuffed Oreo of an episode.” Still in the editing stage, the runtime is currently eight minutes longer than a regular Lower Decks episode. While it is unlikely the final cut will stay that long, the last episode is being given extra care. It was suggested that other longer-than-typical episodes may occur in season 5.

Over the last few weeks, McMahan has expressed how proud he is of how Lower Decks turned out, and says season 5 will be a big part of that, right up until the end. While fans have embraced the quirky series, it’s still difficult to explain how showrunner Mike McMahan managed to fuse a science fiction universe with cartoon humor. McMahan explained how the humor works from an in-universe perspective, as he told Variety :

“The world of Star Trek is real for the characters that inhabit the show. And so they’re telling jokes in a way that they’re as familiar with these locations from other series as much as Tawny and I are. Because we’ve watched them, they’ve lived them.”

While at SDCC, Jerry O’Connell found it difficult to parse some fairly heavy feelings that came about as a result of the story from the final episode. Although he didn’t explicitly talk about anything that happens to his character, Jack Ransom, the finale did seem to affect him personally. During an interview with Comicbook.com , he struggled for words:

“You know what really surprised me? How emotional I got when we were doing our finale. I was amazed I was capable of those emotions.”

Season 5 will bring other resolutions along the way, including adding some closure to the conflict between Beckett Mariner and Jennifer Sh’reyan. Although a popular character with fans, Jennifer has been used only sparingly since the close of season 3 . The reason for this, according to McMahan, is that he had felt satisfied with Jennifer’s story as it has been told. Fans, however, enjoy the chemistry between Mariner and Jennifer, and feedback convinced McMahan to revisit the pairing. He clarified in his chat with Comicbook.com:

“There’s this one episode this season with Mariner and Jennifer the Andorian. I felt like I had told a story with these characters that I really liked. And then I was seeing fan feedback being like, ‘We love these characters, it didn’t feel resolved.’ If they hadn’t said that, then I wouldn’t have been inspired to be like ‘Well, we need to do one more episode with these guys.’”

Tawny Newsome, also on hand for this revelation, chose to add “I really love the Jennifer episode.”

McMahan was tempted to leave this thread hanging, but listened to fans.

More depth added for Orions

Arguably, the most unexpected legacy of Lower Decks is how much detail the animated show has given the Orions, helped along by adding more character depth to Tendi. Though Orions date back to the earliest days of Star Trek, they’ve always been portrayed as dancing green women or weirdly-armored men . With an Orion character in the primary cast, Lower Decks took every opportunity to expand upon the culture, aesthetics, history, and philosophy of Orions. This will continue into season 5. What comes next, however, was teased by Mike McMahan during an SDCC interview with Variety :

“We pull in some Orion lore that’s been discarded over the decades.”

McMahan’s writing team has a talent for reviving details from previous Trek series in ways that enrich both the original episodes and Lower Decks . Whatever “lore” that will be uncovered, it’s likely to follow that pattern. McMahan credits a lot of the show’s success with Orion world-building to Noël Wells and her portrayal of Tendi. Wells opted against over-studying historical appearances of Orions and instead chose her own interpretation of Tendi, allowing the audience to compare and contrast the character with other Orions. McMahan expressed his gratitude to Wells:

“If you were focused on the old Orion episodes, then you wouldn’t be able to embody this character the way I love you doing. Because you would be full of all this arithmetic of Star Trek. Instead, you get to just play her as you would play her in the show as she exists.”

Dancing orion

We can do better than this.

“Lower Decks” is a state of mind

Notably absent from any of McMahan’s commentary on the upcoming season is the need for more seasons to “finish” the story. Instead, he speaks only of the gratitude for having achieved five seasons in today’s television environment. When Variety did suggest that the crew of the Cerritos might outgrow the “newbie” storylines, Mike made it clear that Lower Decks was a mindset, not a lack of pips on your collar:

“It’s funny that, to me, there isn’t a natural end to being Lower Decks . Because, I feel like I’m still learning stuff all the time. Like, I still feel like every time you think you’ve left this place that you were, you’re finding out you didn’t know anything, again. And every time you go through one of those big changes, it starts all over again. The whole ship on Lower Decks is lower decks, and that’s kind of the fun of it.”

SDCC: Live-Action Star Trek Comedy In Development From Tawny Newsome And Justin Simien

Will they give Boimler something to do? He barely did anything for the latter half of the previous season. It was the Mariner show. Mariner solves every problem, as usual.

As for the “gigantic” series finale. Not exactly the hallmark of a top quality creator when his mantra is “just keep adding things, more is more”.

I expect a finale overflowing with fan service, and little else, like most of Lower Decks sadly.

I’m sure you’re clamoring for a Legacy series too? Something that only arose out of Picard S3’s abundant fan servicing.

Lower Decks does a lot of in-universe referencing – it’s a comedy after all – but it never just “overflows with fan service” unless it’s building more on the story. The previous 4 seasons have been tightly executed so if they feel the need to make an episode longer, it’s likely because there’s more for the characters to do. There’s a larger cast than just the main 4 we’ll be saying goodbye to.

The comments on this site make us all look like Star Wars fans.

I’m not clamouring for a legacy series in the slightest. That’s all modern day Trek is, fanservice, legacy characters and references to past Trek, so no, I don’t want just more excuse for legacy cameos.

I want them to push the franchise forward.

Not sure what your second paragraph is saying. It sounds like McMahon’s mantra for the finale was “throw everything in, more, more more”. Yes that might mean there’ll be lots for the characters to do, but I suspect it’ll be more a case of more references to past Trek (and then a few seconds at the end of Mariner saving the day once again)

I love that some fans were clamouring for the return of the TNG cast in Picard… only to complain about “fan service” when they were brought back. Some fans are just not happy unless they are complaining.

He got to command the ship…

For a 20 second scene

So? He commanded the Cerritos in a critical moment. It doesn’t matter how quick the scene was- it was a MAJOR milestone in his character development.

I think you are just looking for things to complain about.

If the show has had a single bad season finale maybe I’d take issue but First First Contact is still the best season finale in modern Trek so I’m not gonna make myself worried with no real evidence that I should be.

Hope you’ll get your fav series, too!! Lower Decks was a bubble of happiness for me. I guess taste just differs.

Cool. Five seasons is a good run. It’s the same number of seasons and episodes as Stranger Things, so it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Really bummed this is ending, but glad we’ll at least get this next season.

Hope we can see these characters show up more in future Trek (either animated or live-action).

Lower Decks helped me love Star Trek again.

I’m going to miss it so much.

Same. I think for me LDS was really the first Trek anything I fell in love with from the beginning since Voyager premiered. I didn’t really like Enterprise or Discovery out of the gate. Started off loving Picard only to be highly let down in the end. Thought the reboot movies were OK for what they were but never loved them or took them very seriously. Fun action movies but not Trek on the level I wanted personally. And never really wanted a TOS reboot movie either.

But yet this little animated comedy I was pretty certain would probably be canceled after season two ended up being one of my favorite Trek shows ever. It brought back a bit of old Trek I was really missing while doing something new and daring for the franchise.

I think it was Nick Meyer who said you shouldn’t worry about giving the audience what it wants and most probably would agree that would include LDS lol. But it ended up being a show that grabbed a lot of fans hearts and will surely be missed by me.

Just goes to show how a show fans are cringing at when it was first announced can be morphed into a favourite.

Well done to everyone on the show for changing their minds and turning people’s heads. Bravo.

It’s very, very easy to get fan appreciation when you absolutely flood a show with tons of nostalgia, cameos and fan service.

Picard S3 did it and Lower Decks too.So I’m not sure ‘bravo’ is in order.

Lower Decks was my first Star Trek show and it made me love Star Trek, it’s good because it has good characters.

It’s kind of funny to see Lower Decks get the “cameos” take when it’s the show that relies on past characters the least. Every other modern show has a legacy character in a main role and Lower Decks sprinkles in a couple a season and never makes them take over the episode.

A. So happy to hear how much you love Lower Decks and it was your first entry into Star Trek!

B. I have been saying this since the first season and repated it a few days ago on another thread here that LDS relies on legacy characters the least out of all the modern shows. Not only does it not have any legacy characters it its cast it also doesn’t have any recurring characters either like the way DIS, PRO and definitely SNW does and certain characters keep popping up like T’Pring or Kirk does. I also mentioned none of the legacy characters drive the story either and most are usually part of the B story and not the A story like how Paris showed up in season 2. And a lot of fans were upset he didn’t have a bigger role.

I love the way the show handles them like how Kira and Quark were done where they had a huge part in the story but was simply part of it like any other character. The focus was still on the LDS characters first as it should be.

But yeah it really gets frustrating to have these arguments from people who think we only love the show because we want to see Picard show up and not because we love the characters and stories the show tells itself. If I just watched for the Easter eggs I would’ve got bored long ago. I truly love these characters and the world they inhabit. It puts a smile on my face every episode in a way most of the classic shows did.

Not to be a snob but I feel like a lot of people had an idea of what Lower Decks would be from a first impression and 5 years have passed and they never really got past that first impression to look at the substance. And I think that the biggest example of this is seeing Picard S3, a show that lost all of it’s original cast and ended on a shot of the TNG cast playing poker, and Lower Decks, a show that is so focused on it’s own cast that it has 3 different chants celebrating its own characters in 3 separate season finales, as the same because they both reference the past.

Ya know, I did not like it for the nostalgia, cameos and fan service. Though I grew up with Trek I’m not too good with the lore and references. I just happen to really like all the characters, as well as how they develop over the course of the show. And, as I’ve often said in the comments, I liked the fact that it has its moments where it can sometimes be surprisingly deep or moving beneath the colourful exterior, the everyday themes and psychological themes and so on of the show. Mariner going against herself on the holodeck or the final episode where they dismantled the hull were great. Haha, sometimes I liked the episodes others did not like (as a former employee of a consultancy ;) I’m still loving the buffer time episode, and found it hilarious how the Mugato scene sort of modeled peaceful resolution of conflicts in the episode :-)). In may sound strange, but to me this show despite being fast and outwardly loud, has often been more layered and interesting than say Strange New Worlds, because it often has more inward or introspective topics, and that’s something I connect to. Also, I liked the carefree nature of the show during a difficult time both personally and regarding the general state of the world. That’s just my own fan opinion here, but I hope it helps explain why some others really like the show. There’s also some really creative fanfiction by now: one person literally went and rewrote a whole Lower Decks episode in the style of a famous 1798 seefaring poem.

I fully admit to initially cringing. It’s easily my favorite new Trek now. I’ll miss it.

I just hope they leave it open ended enough that the show can get renewed someday. I think it will get renewed once Skydance buys Paramount. They’d be crazy to leave such a valuable IP to gather dust. The great thing about a cartoon is that it can get canceled for years and then resumed as if no time has passed. Fingers crossed.

I read comments by McMahan that the Lower Decks finale will not be as “final” as, say, the Discovery finale. So we probably won’t fast-forward the characters to their retirement. Sounds like we will get the end of a chapter but they’ll keep it open enough to return to it later if an opportunity arises.

I’m going to really miss this show. I loved every season although I think season 3 was the weakest and only disliked 3 episodes in the entire series. That’s pretty crazy for a show that has 40 episodes so far.

It’s just so much fun, has a lot of heart and was a love letter to all things Star Trek. I’m still hoping it will continue on in some form.

Well, I did not like the Picard series much.. Have just posted some love letter to the characters above. Can drop some select LD fanfiction recommendations once the season’s over (if that’s the done thing on this forum?).

I wonder if the series finale will be an hour.

You haven’t read the article, have you?

I have always been surprised how much i honestly LOVE Lower Decks. All of it just works, the characters are so likeable, and the way the stories are often SO over the top are lot of fun — and somehow, it always comes back to the four (now five) Lower Deckkers and their love of each other and the Starfleet dream. I find so much JOY in the show.

I’ve watched Disco, I’ve watched Picard, but only picked up the Disco season 2 DVDs, and the Picard Season 3 DVDs. But Lower Decks? Have every season on DVD and will watch them again — and again, because they made Star Trek joyful and FUN again.

Can’t wait for season 5.

I’m not sure why episode length matters. They aren’t on a broadcast network with a fixed schedule.

Every extra minute the episode budget gets more expensive.

I was a bit surprised how fixed the episode lengths were. But we have to keep in mind that every frame costs in animation. In live-action, once you have set up your shot, it probably doesn’t matter much if you film a 1-minute scene or a 5-minute scene (unless the scene requires VFX). But in animation, it all has to be created by the artists.

It’s just not the same when Christopher Plummer isn’t saying it lol

How did McMahan think Jennifer’s story was in any way, shape, or form, resolved?

Her betrayal of Beckett in not believing her about the interview in the s3 finale was super shitty. I can’t believe that Beckett just came back to the ship and never called her on it. I was waiting all of season 4 for something, anything, to happen there. Up until now I’d actually written it off to Jennifer requesting a transfer to another ship out of embarrassment.

Much like Gray on Discovery, I don’t think story-telling was the purpose of Jennifer’s inclusion.

Please elaborate.

What Harry is basically is saying is that Gray was only on Discovery as a box ticking exercise… which is a) extraordinarily problematic and maybe even transphobic, b) a rightwing talking point to try and discredit any LGBTQIA+ characters from being notable and c) conveniently ignores the fact that they were instrumental in the ship reaching Federation HQ, discovering the origin point of The Burn and also in identifying Su’Kal as the cause. In fact, if memory serves, without Gray beaming down to the dilithium planet, it’s likely the away team would have died from radiation poisoning. They were also a key player in Season 4 (can’t say that about Season 5 because I haven’t seen much of it yet).

And before he says anything… Gray was originally supposed to be cisgender and only became non-binary after Blu came out as such during filming. It’s why in a lot of their early episodes, characters use “she” when talking about them.

I’ll leave it up to you to determine how awkward you think it is that you wrote two paragraphs about Adira as a defense of Gray.

Characters on Discovery included as a box-ticking exercise?? WHAT!!?

Also lol @ Amok Mime’s reply.

well, all good things…

I’ll be amazed if the last scene isn’t a rip off of the poker scene from All Good Things. Again. Because god forbid these shows actually do anything original and fresh.

Good point. Lower Decks is so derivative of all those other zany fast-paced irreverent animated comedies Trek has been so famous for in the past.

Section 31: Release Window, Cast, Story & Everything We Know About Star Trek’s First Streaming Movie

Where you've seen star trek: starfleet academy's cast before, tawny newsome defends starfleet academy as “real star trek”, says new half-hour comedy is “my dream of dreams”.

  • Star Trek on Paramount+'s Discovery and Lower Decks are both ending in 2024 with each show's season 5.
  • Paramount+ is rethinking its Star Trek strategy, focusing on made-for-streaming movies and only two live-action series.
  • The future still looks bright for Star Trek despite these changes, with new Star Trek theatrical movies in development.

Star Trek is still going strong, but the 58-year-old franchise's upcoming TV and movie slate will have fewer series and new theatrical and made-for-streaming movies. 2022 was a remarkable year that saw a new episode from 5 new Star Trek series streaming on Paramount+ nearly every Thursday of the year. 2023 saw the critically acclaimed ending of Star Trek: Picard, the lauded Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, and Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, perhaps the best run of the animated comedy yet.

Star Trek is in a transitional period in 2024. Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks end with their respective season 5s , while Star Trek: Prodigy moved to Netflix and delivered an acclaimed season 2. Reflecting industry-wide changes in streaming content as well as the sale of Paramount to Skydance, Paramount+ is rethinking its Star Trek strategy , starting with an expansion into made-for-streaming movies that are designed to feel like blockbuster events. Paramount Pictures' Star Trek movies are also showing signs of life, at last. While more change is imminent for the franchise, the future still looks bright for Star Trek .

Star Trek: Picard season 3's proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy , seems halted as showrunner Terry Matalas has moved to Marvel Studios and 20th Century films.

Star Trek Is Spread Out Across 3 Streaming Services Now - Where To Watch

The Star Trek franchise is split across three different streaming services in 2024. Here's where to watch your favorite Star Trek movies and shows.

7 Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5

The final season premieres october 2024 on paramount+..

Star Trek: Lower Decks is the last Star Trek series on Paramount+'s 2024 schedule, and it's also delivering its fifth and final season. Mike McMahan's animated comedy was creatively firing full phaser banks in Lower Decks season 4, promoting the Lower Deckers of the USS Cerritos to junior grade Lieutenants, homaging Star Trek: Voyager' s "Tuvix," visiting Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's new Ferengi Grand Nagus, and tying Lt. Beckett Mariner's (Tawny Newsome) backstory to the animated show's namesake, the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Lower Decks". Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5's teaser trailer premiered at San Diego Comic-Con:

Unfortunately, Paramount+ has opted to end Star Trek: Lower Decks with season 5, which premieres October 24, 2024 . This comes as a huge disappointment, especially considering how relatively inexpensive Lower Decks is to produce compared to Paramount+'s live-action Star Trek series. While a fan campaign has begun to save Star Trek: Lower Deck s, and there is preliminary talk of finding the animated comedy a new steaming home, the best way to boost Star Trek: Lower Decks' profile is to stream the previous four seasons and season 5 when it premieres in great numbers.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 - Release Date, Trailer, Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Great news: Star Trek: Lower Decks is coming back for season 5. Bad news: It's the final season of Lower Decks on Paramount+.

6 Star Trek: Section 31

The first made-for-streaming paramount+ movie premieres in 2025.

Originally planned as an ongoing series, Star Trek: Section 31 is now the first Star Trek original movie for Paramount+ . Star Trek : Section 31 is said to delve into the origin and secrets of Starfleet's insidious black ops agency. Star Trek: Section 31 will star Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh reprising her anti-heroine Emperor Philippa Georgiou, the former ruler of the Mirror Universe. Georgiou's new adventure places her in Star Trek 's 24th-century "lost era" and surrounds the Emperor with an eclectic new cast. Star Trek: Section 31's teaser trailer premiered at San Diego Comic-Con:

Star Trek: Section 31 will premiere in 2025 on Paramount+. Section 31 is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi from a screenplay by Craig Sweeny, and, if it's successful, could spawn sequels and a new wave of made-for-streaming Star Trek movies. Also starring Sam Richardson, Kacey Rohl, Humberly Gonzalez, and Miku Martineau, Star Trek: Section 31 promises an action-packed and "messy" adventure that will see classic Star Trek aliens the Chameloids and Deltans return.

Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh headlines Star Trek: Section 31, and here's what we know about Paramount+'s first Star Trek streaming movie.

5 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

The next star trek series is set in the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the next Star Trek series on Paramount+, with production beginning in late 2024 for a targeted 2026 premiere. Created by Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, who serve as co-showrunners, Starfleet Academy introduces a new group of cadets learning under the series' star and Academy Chancellor, played by Oscar-winner Holly Hunter. Paul Giamatti has also signed on in a recurring role as Starfleet Academy's main villain. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy introduced its young cast at San Diego Comic-Con:

Starfleet Academy will film on the largest set ever built for Star Trek , and will return the school to its original Earth location of San Francisco after the Academy reopened in outer space in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. Kurtzman has also hinted at Starfleet Academy 's young characters questioning the decisions and even fixing the mistakes of past Starfleet Officers. Star Trek: Lower Decks' Tawny Newsome is also part of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's writer's room.

Star Trek's next series, Starfleet Academy, counts Academy Award-caliber actors and a crew of new faces in its growing cast.

4 Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 & 4

Strange new worlds gets 2 more seasons.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 wrapped production in May 2024 with an expected 2025 premiere on Paramount+. While Strange New Worlds season 3's premiere will pick up and resolve the Gorn cliffhanger of Strange New Worlds season 2 finale , season 3's episodes will see the return of directors Chris Fisher, Valerie Weiss, Dan Liu, and Jonathan Frakes, who is directing a Hollywood noir episode. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered a 5-minute clip of a season 3 episode directed by Jordan Canning at San Diego Comic-Con:

Excitingly, Paramount+ gave Star Trek: Strange New Worlds an early season 4 renewal , which essentially makes the series the new flagship of Star Trek on Paramount+ now that Star Trek: Discovery is over. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 will begin filming in Spring 2025, and that batch of 10 episodes will let Strange New Worlds help commemorate Star Trek' s 60th anniversary in 2026.

3 Untitled Star Trek Live-Action Comedy

Tawny newsome and justin simien are creating a new star trek show.

Also announced at San Diego Comic-Con is Star Trek' s first live-action comedy series. Created by Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien, their upcoming Star Trek show is a half-hour workplace comedy set on a pleasure planet somewhere in the galaxy. Newsome was inspired by her lifelong Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fandom, and standalone Star Trek episodes of the past. While little is known about the series, a live-action comedy is a bold frontier for Star Trek.

Tawny Newsome talks about her work as a writer on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and hints at her dream job, Star Trek's first live-action comedy.

2 Untitled Star Trek Origin Movie

Premiering in theaters in 2025.

Paramount Pictures officially announced an Untitled Star Trek Origin Movie for a targeted 2025 premiere in theaters. Directed by Toby Haynes, who directed Star Wars: Andor and the "USS Callister" episode of Black Mirror, the Star Trek Origin movie is written by Seth Grahame-Smith ( Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) . The Star Trek Origin Movie is produced by J.J. Abrams and is set "decades before" Abrams' Star Trek (2009) . When, exactly, in the Star Trek timeline the origin movie is set, and what characters or starship it will be about, is all under wraps, although the film is reportedly set mostly on Earth and will deal with the founding of the Federation.

1 Star Trek 4

The final chapter of chris pine's starship enterprise crew is in development..

Reportedly still in development is Star Trek 4 , the long-delayed fourth Star Trek movie produced by J.J. Abrams starring the USS Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. Star Trek 4 has a new screenwriter, Steve Yockey, attempting to craft an adventure worthy of bringing Pine's cast back to the big screen after numerous failed attempts. Star Trek' s cast are all willing to beam back aboard the Starship Enterprise for their "final chapter", but the long wait for Star Trek 4 - which now stands at 8 years and counting - continues.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Not available

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Star trek: strange new worlds.

Nearly a decade after Star Trek Beyond was released in 2016, Star Trek 4 is seeing progress toward becoming a reality . Billed as the "final chapter" of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek , the fourth film about the USS Enterprise led by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk has a new screenwriter in Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant) . No director for Star Trek 4 has been named, but fingers are crossed that the Starship Enterprise of the alternate Kelvin Timeline will finally make its big-screen return. Star Trek 4 possibly releasing in 2026 would be an ideal way to mark Star Trek 's 60th anniversary.

6 TV shows you need to watch in April

Ghoul appears in a scene from Fallout.

Can you believe it’s almost April? While it might feel like you were just ringing in the new year, spring is already on the horizon, which also means a whole new selection of TV shows to sink your teeth into. With dramas, thrillers, shows based on video games, and even a Star Trek franchise show’s final season, this month’s picks are delightfully diverse.

American Horror Story: Delicate Part 2 (April 3)

Star trek: discovery season 5 (april 4), fallout (april 12), welcome to wrexham season 3 (april 18), knuckles (april 26), the veil (april 30).

Half of the six TV shows you need to watch in April are shows returning with new seasons and the other half are new titles that may well become your favorites. They are available through top streaming services , so make sure to bookmark these titles, their premiere dates, and where to stream them so you don’t miss out.

The 12th season of the popular horror anthology series premiered in September 2023, but fans have waited seven months for part 2, which is finally here. As with every season, American Horror Story: Delicate features an entirely new storyline with new characters, who are played this time around by Emma Roberts, Kim Kardashian, Cara Delevingne, and others.

As the first story to be based on a novel (Danielle Valentine’s Delicate Condition ), American Horror Story: Delicate centers around Anna (Roberts), an actress who is desperate to get pregnant, but believes someone is trying to prevent this from happening. She becomes obsessed with this idea, unsure if she’s just hallucinating or if her paranoid feelings are justified. Beneath the surface entertainment of the thrilling story is social commentary about topical issues like abortion rights, pregnancy, and gaslighting. AHS devotees might miss regular cast members like Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, and Lily Rabe, but the new cast brings a fresh take to the unique story in this season.

Stream American Horror Story: Delicate on Hulu .

Ending its run after this fifth and final season, Star Trek: Discovery flips back to a decade prior to the events in Star Trek: The Original Series . The setting begins in the 23rd Century, though the timeline jumps ahead by the end of season 2 to be well into the 32nd century, where the rest of the show takes place. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is a science specialist-turned-captain who leads her crew aboard the starship Discovery. Fresh off reassignment when her previous actions start a war, Burnham embarks on new adventures, investigating everything from rogue AIs to mysterious signals.

As the seventh Star Trek series overall and the first since Star Trek: Enterprise  ended in 2005, Star Trek: Discovery was a huge draw for CBS All Access (since rebranded as Paramount+ ) when it premiered in 2017. The series was followed by the show Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which is gearing up for its third season. The upcoming movie Star Trek: Section 31 will serve as a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery. Although it has receivied praise for its prosthetic makeup and visual effects, Martin-Green’s gripping performance is really what fuels Star Trek: Discovery and its story.

Stream Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount+.

The latest in a series of shows based on popular video game franchises, Fallout brings the role-playing game to life on the small screen. The postapocalyptic story is about a group of survivors residing in underground bunkers known as Vaults. They have escaped the resource war above ground, and are hunkering down in fear of a potential nuclear war. Lucy (Ella Purnell of Yellowjackets ) grew up in the vaults and decides to venture outside to explore the desolate wasteland above. Once there, she realizes the world outside of the fallout bunkers is more dangerous, savage, and terrifying than she ever imagined.

The Fallout TV show is developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, co-creators of the Westworld series. Nolan is also known as the creator of the sci-fi series Person of Interest and co-writer of movies like The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises , and Interstellar . The series also stars Walton Goggins ( The Righteous Gemstones ) as a mutated gunslinger called  The Ghoul, Aaron Moten as Maximus, a member of the Brotherhood of Steel, and Kyle MacLachlan as Lucy’s father, Hank. Fallout is a must-watch for fans of the video game, especially as it’s expected to remain faithful to the original story. But even those unfamiliar with the story and game will appreciate the series as another great entry in the postapocalyptic subgenre.

Stream Fallout on Prime Video.

Right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney decided to do something totally unexpected and purchased a flailing Welsh football association club. In true Ted Lasso fashion, the pair believed they could turn the team around and inject much-needed passion (and funds) into the project. Why not chronicle their journey of trying to bring this club back to life in a docuseries? They did, and they call it Welcome to Wrexham.

Inspired by sports docuseries like Sunderland ‘Til I Die, Last Chance U , and Cheer , Welcome to Wrexham follows the new owners, but also gives fans a look behind the scenes at the players and others involved in the club, as well as the games. While Wrexham has yet to achieve its dream of making it to the Premier League, the team has been consistently moving up the ranks. Season 3 will, for the first time, premiere in spring, coinciding with the league games. The heartfelt, funny, and inspirational show has become a hit among fans who recognize the passion behind it.

Stream Welcome to Wrexham on Hulu.

If you love Sonic the Hedgehog , Knuckles should be on your list of shows to watch this month. The miniseries is based on the Sega video game series and serves as a spinoff of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. The story takes places between the events in Sonic the Hedgehog 2  and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and centers around Knuckles the Echidna, voiced by Idris Elba. The super-strong echidna, who has now moved to Earth, is adjusting to his new life and setting. His primary job, however, is training Wade Whipple (Adam Pally), a dim-witted deputy sheriff, on how to be an echidna warrior, and, of course, how to help save the world.

Also featuring Cary Elwes, Stockard Channing, Scott Mescudi, Christopher Lloyd, and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles is a fun live-action movie to watch with the whole family.

Those who have been waiting anxiously for the return of The Handmaid’s Tale can check out Elisabeth Moss in The Veil in the meantime. She stars in this limited series thriller about two women traveling together from Istanbul to Paris, then London. But this isn’t a joyful road trip: one woman has a dangerous secret and the other is desperate to expose it before thousands of lives are lost.

Written by Steven Knight, best known for creating the BBC series Peaky Blinders , The Veil is all about truth, lies, and two women playing a game with stakes higher than they ever imagined. Moss, who learned a British accent for the role, also serves as a producer of the series.

Hulu can't compete with Netflix's constant supply of movies, but the films that it does get throughout the month tend to be more enticing than the average flick on Netflix. That's definitely true heading into this weekend, as Hulu adds one of 2024's first horror titles, as well as a female-driven action film from last year. Our other pick is a crime comedy that doubles as a rom-com by one of the most famous directing duos in Hollywood.

These are the three Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend. But if you need more options, check out what's new on Hulu in August. Immaculate (2024)

When it first came onto the scene as a streaming service, Netflix was heavily reliant on movies and TV shows from other studios. Now, a decade later, Netflix is a full-fledged studio in and of itself, even as it still licenses some things from other places. Because there's so much on Netflix, though, it can be hard to figure out what's actually worth watching.

That's where we come in. We've selected three fairly underrated shows available on the streaming service that are actually among the best shows on Netflix. Check them out and thank us later. Warrior (2019-2023) Warrior | Official Tease | Cinemax

In space, no one can hear you scream. Film buffs will know that's the famous tagline from 1979's Alien, a movie that is just as good now as it was all those decades ago. The beloved sci-fi franchise has just released its latest iteration, Alien: Romulus, which has so far received praise from the lucky critics who have seen it.

But what if you don't want to scream in space this weekend? Well, if you have a Netflix subscription, you needn't worry. We've rounded up three titles that have been neglected by most people but are still worth watching this weekend or any day of the week. So if you like movies about Irish spies, female softball players looking for love, or Vespa-riding priests, then you're all set. The Devil's Own (1997)

With countless spin-offs, worldwide merchandise, and even its own fully-fledged language, it is no surprise that Star Trek has one of the largest fan bases in the world and has more than earned its iconic status. Fans from across the globe tune into the plethora of Star Trek -related media and spin-offs from Picard to Discovery to get the latest fix of this ever-expanding universe. From its inception back in the 1960s to now, Star Trek has rarely wavered in its popularity, however, a recent run of wonderful spin-offs has led to the current era of the franchise being one of its best-loved. With Star Trek: Discovery airing its fifth and final season in 2024, and the continued success of the current sophomore season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , it can be easy to forget just how much other brilliant Star Trek content we have to look forward to. One such show, which recently aired its third Season back in 2022 to great public acclaim, is Star Trek: Lower Decks , the adult-animated spin-off created by Mike McMahan ( Solar Opposites ). So, with the third outing now in the rearview mirror, and with a fourth Season officially on the horizon, here is everything we know about Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 so far.

Editor's Note: This article was updated on September 5.

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, fans were treated with plenty of exciting information regarding the upcoming fourth season. One such piece of information, released alongside a neat Star Trek IV -inspired poster, is the official release date for Season 4. It was announced that Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 would launch on September 7, 2023 . This means there really is hardly any time to wait for fans to get their next fix of the lower-deckers.

Another wonderful surprise at the recent San Diego Comic-Con was the release of a trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 . Alongside a special screening of the Strange New Worlds crossover episode , the trailer, packed full of Easter eggs, was shown and met with great appreciation from the fan base. That particular trailer can be seen in the player above and a new trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 was released on August 31 as well, which teases a connection to another beloved Star Trek spinoff.

Just like many other Star Trek shows such as Voyager and Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Lower Decks will continue to be featured on Paramount+ . The crew of the USS Cerritos will return to streaming on the service on the aforementioned release date, with fans also hoping for the same Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital release treatment that Season 3 has recently been given. While you wait for Season 4, you can now catch up on the first three seasons on Paramount+ as well.

We have a synopsis for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4, thanks to the official website , which reads as follows:

"In Season 4 of Star Trek Lower Decks, an unknown force is destroying starships and threatening galactic peace. Luckily, the crew of the USS Cerritos isn’t important enough for stuff like that! Instead, Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, and provisional Ensign T’Lyn are keeping up with their Starfleet duties, avoiding malevolent computers and getting stuck in a couple of caves- all while encountering new and classic aliens along the way."

Already, fans will be delighted with this synopsis as, alongside an exciting new trailer, it suggests that there will be more of the same laugh-a-minute dialogue and wacky storylines from the writers. Given how successful the previous seasons of the show were, it was sensible to maintain the same tone and style for Season 4, but add in a dash of jeopardy in the form of the "unknown force", and a whole new main character, with Gabrielle Ruiz ( Orange is the New Black ) playing the Vulcan T'Lyn.

Luckily for fans, all the previous cast members who voice the now-beloved characters are returning to the sound booth. This includes the likes of Tawny Newsome ( Brockmire ) as Beckett Mariner, Jack Quaid ( Scream ) as Brad Boimler, Noël Wells ( Mr. Roosevelt ) as D’Vana Tendi, Eugene Cordero ( Loki ) as Sam Rutherford, Dawnn Lewis ( Dreamgirls ) as Carol Freeman, Jerry O’Connell ( Stand By Me ) as Jack Ransom, and Fred Tatasciore ( Team America: World Police ) as Shax. Of course, Lower Decks is also now famous for its guest stars and cameo appearances, with the likes of Armin Shimerman ( BioShock ) and James Cromwell ( The Green Mile ) appearing in Season 3. With that in mind, there is certainly hope that some more talented voices may drop by in Season 4, which only adds to the heaps of anticipation that currently surrounds the show. As mentioned, Season 4 will also be adding Gabrielle Ruiz to the main cast as the Vulcan T'Lyn.

The series writing credits of course go to show creator Mike McMahan, who is joined by many fellow writers including the likes of Garrick Bernard ( Single Drunk Female ) and Ben Rodgers ( Emily the Criminal ). Directing credits across the show go to Barry J. Kelly ( The Venture Bros. ) and others, with executive producer credits going to the likes of Aaron Baiers ( Salvation ), Heather Kadin ( Sleepy Hollow ), and Katie Krentz ( Steven Universe ). Of course, with a show of this nature, the appreciation behind the scenes would not be complete without a nod to the infinitely talented animation team, including the likes of art director Nollan Obena ( Ben 10 ) and color designer Angela Victoria Llerena ( Axe Cop ).

Paramount+ has officially announced that there will be a total of 10 episodes in the upcoming fourth season, the same amount as the previous three Seasons. With so much hilarious content to come, fans can hardly contain their excitement.

To the delight of fans, it was officially announced months ahead of Season 4 that a fifth season of the show had been greenlit by Paramount+ . Clearly, and rightly, Paramount has enormous faith in this animated brilliance, and it is the show's dedicated fans that are reaping the rewards.
