Bird Tattoo Designs & Their Meaning
Bird tattoos can make for stunning pieces of art. They’re colorful, detailed, and can be customized in countless ways to suit your message and personality. We’ll discuss some common designs, which species to choose, how to decide on colors, and where to place the ink.
The Meaning of Birds
There are over 15,000 species of birds on the planet. Each has its peculiarities and could be used to symbolize different traits and messages in tattoos. There can also be different symbolisms to the feathers of various species, so if you don’t want to get a whole bird tattooed on you, a feather might be a good option.
Some general interpretations associated with these feathered beauties include:
Freedom
It makes perfect sense that, to us earth-bound humans, the bird would symbolize freedom.
These feathery creatures can roam the Earth and the skies, seeing life from a unique point of view. Some often migrate , so they’re basically the world’s best travelers—who among us doesn’t envy that?
If you’ve ever yearned to travel, to experience new things, and see life from a different perspective, this ink may be the perfect symbol for what you seek. Those who travel a lot may get a flying swallow tattoo , or perhaps a whole flock , to symbolize their freedom.
Another popular freedom-related illustration is that of a bird looking out over a mountain range. It adds emphasis to the theme that for the wearer, like the bird, the world is open.
Independence
This is quite similar to freedom but is less about the experience and more about making your own decisions and choosing your own actions. A bird in the sky is the perfect symbol for this. It’s interpreted to mean that you go where you want, do what you want to, and when you want to do them.
A lone bird with its wings spread is another example of a typical design symbolizing independence. A great idea would be to go for a powerful species, like the eagle , to emphasize the theme.
Pair a brightly-colored birdie tat with other elements representing joy, such as hearts or stars, for a great design. Those who love music may choose to get a songbird tattoo and incorporate music notes.
In many cultures, birds are the link between Heaven and Earth. They can move between the two as they wish, and so they’ve come to be known as a representation of the human soul and eternal life.
Those who’ve lost someone dear to them may get a tattoo, usually a dove, to symbolize the free soul of their loved one.
Common Birds and Their Symbolisms
When it comes to tattoos, unless there’s a very special personal symbolism behind it, most people don’t get dodos or pigeons inked onto their skin. That’s not to say these feathery creatures aren’t wonderful and meaningful symbols, but some species are more likely than others to find themselves the subject of body art.
Some commonly seen bird tattoos include:
These nocturnal creatures represent wisdom. This meaning is founded in folklore from all over the world and leans more towards the wisdom of the soul than intelligence.
Owls are mysterious birds, appearing mostly at night and are associated with rituals, magic, ancient knowledge, and prophecy.
Dark, brooding owl tattoo designs can embody that mystery and magic. If you want something more symbolic of intelligence and wisdom, a more colorful owl paired with something like a book or a scroll would be a unique design.
Main interpretations: wisdom, mystery, magic.
Eagles
Eagles are majestic—considered as the kings of the skies.
There’s a reason these beauties are America’s national emblem . They represent the coming together of beauty and strength.
Those who are particularly patriotic may get an eagle artwork that incorporates the national flag. A raptor patterned like a flag would work, so would an eagle holding a flag.
People in leadership positions might get a tattoo of a majestic eagle in flight. To show its driven and authoritative nature, you might design a piece that involves the raptor hunting—such as an eagle grasping a smaller, more helpless creature in its talons.
Main interpretations: majesty, strength, power, focus, leadership.
Hummingbirds
These tiny birds aren’t only brightly and beautifully colored, but they also have some amazing characteristics that set them apart. They have superb control , and can fly backward, hover, come to an instant stop mid-flight, and flap their wings up to 80 times per second , creating the hum they’re named after.
To remind yourself that you’re in control of your life, a brightly colored tiny hummingbird tattoo works. You may want to add a flower for extra beauty.
Main interpretations: beauty, joy, magic, uniqueness, sweetness.
Phoenix
The phoenix has extremely powerful symbolism . Although this is a mythological bird, it represents strength, tenacity, and the sheer will to rise again after life knocks you down.
The phoenix can’t be its powerful self without some form of destruction first. It reminds us that, although setbacks are part of life, we have the ability and strength to rise again after being broken.
To represent power and rebirth, pair the phoenix with striking flames. Other elements you could consider adding include lightning and smoke to emphasize the theme.
An idea to show the cycle of destruction and renewal is to have half the phoenix in black ink, and the other half in bright, fiery color.
Main interpretations: rebirth, renewal, transformation, strength, tenacity.
Popular Bird Tattoo Designs
Here are some of the most popular bird tattoo designs:
Realistic
These types of bird tattoos are very detailed and contain amazingly shaded colors. An eagle may be best presented in a bold style with stark colors, while a hummingbird might be better in a fine art style with shaded colors.
Artistic
There are so many ways a bird tattoo can be interpreted and drawn. Some interesting and beautiful artistic designs include:
If you’re an artist, you might want to get a bird image in the particular style of art you favor.
Flying or Perched
The tat of a bird in flight is a good illustration of optimism and drive to achieve. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t depict one perched. Owls and eagles are often depicted in a perched position, which shows their majesty and beauty.
You could also customize your birdie by having it seated on something specific, such as a wire, a tree branch, or a rock. For gothic-styled tats, a dark bird, like a raven, perched on a crooked tree would emphasize the theme and add mystery to the art.
You can also carry a theme by having a bird gripping something in its claws—a smaller creature to show its power or a flower or heart for something a bit more peaceful.
Common Bird Tattoo Colors
You may choose to have your tattoo inked in red to show passion, yellow for happiness, or green for a link to nature.
Black ink is excellent for gothic and gloomy themed illustrations. White or other brightly colored ink can be used to add contrast to the art.
This is where you get to make the tattoo your own, and add in extra symbolism. Different colors are associated with different emotions and can add a layer of feeling to your body art.
Common Body Placement for Bird Tattoos
Bird tattoos can be placed virtually anywhere, but here are the most inked spots:
The back is a wonderful space for a tattoo of a bird in flight, especially if you want something large and impressive, like an eagle.
The Shoulder
The shoulder is a nice position as it implies a perch, so it’s a good spot for a sitting bird tattoo.
Other
Other meaningful places include the chest , close to your heart , behind the ear —to show the mindset of freedom and independence—and the ankle, to illustrate a willingness to move on after life knocks you back a few.

Birds are common across tattoo styles thanks to their simplicity and symbolism. They're also one of the most common animals seen in nature so people naturally gravitate towards them.
Going all the way back to the start of American traditional tattooing, birds were a popular image thanks to their history; sailors would often get swallows inked to visibly mark them as sailors. It was said that if they drowned, the swallows would carry their souls to heaven.
Nowadays, birds tend to represent more than sailing experience. The animal can symbolize freedom, courage, or even travel. Specific birds have their own symbolism as well, like the dove—which represents peace, faith, and purity—or the phoenix, which represents rebirth and second chances.
Pilar Zurita, an Artist at Atelier Eva, says that birds represent the different stages of life and the need for connection. "Primarily, people gravitate towards bird tattoos as they tend to symbolize the fleeting nature of life—a common allegory for transitional periods, the instinct to keep moving forward and flying in a close, familial group."
"Bird tattoos are so popular as they tend to represent family and lineage connections. Traditionally in my Ukrainian culture, birds represent family," says Koral Ladna, a Resident Artist at INKED NYC.
If you’re interested in a bird tattoo but need more inspiration, here are 27 different bird tattoos to get your imagination going.

Realistic Hummingbird Tattoo
Realistic hummingbird tattoos require a lot of shading, but they’re able to remain feeling light thanks to the delicate nature of the bird itself. Ask your artist to use gradient shading to add dimension to the design as well.
Hummingbird Tattoo With Varied Line Thicknesses
Hummingbirds have a very distinct shape (and beak!), so it’s easy to re-create it using fewer lines. This watercolor hummingbird design uses a variety of line thicknesses to create the shape of the bird overtop vivid hues.
Minimal Dove Tattoo
Birds are easily broken down into their basic elements for line art or abstract tattoos, and doves in particular are no different. If you like simple ink, choose a design that utilizes the smallest number of lines possible without losing the dove’s image.
Line Art Hummingbird Tattoo
If you prefer the most minimalist of minimal tattoos, try a line art hummingbird design. This tattoo seems to be created out of one single line, but manages to nail the major elements to translate the bird through the style.
Thin-Lined American Traditional Bird Tattoo
While traditional tattooing is known for its heavy lines, what really makes it that style is the arrangement of lines and the posing of the elements. This bird uses thin lines and no color but still manages to portray the American traditional style.
Vivid Geometric Bird Tattoo
Geometric tattoos don’t have to be done in all black ink! If you want to use color, try using colors to denote where the elements sit in terms of background and foreground. For a real pop, make the middle element the brightest color.
Double Swallow Tattoo
Swallows are the most common bird type in traditional tattoos, and they’re often seen in pairs. If you like the idea of double swallows, consider getting them in separate areas—like the hands or the ankles—where they can both stand alone and together.
Brightly Colored Hummingbird Tattoo
While hummingbirds are found in nature, don’t feel confined to natural colors when designing your tattoo. Try opting for vivid colors, like purple and green, that you like, rather than what’s expected.
Personal Bird Tattoo
If your bird tattoo means something special to you, try adding personal elements, like a name or phras e, to connect it to you even more. Choose a font that complements the style of your ink, such as how the cursive here looks beautiful against the watercolor background.
Paper Crane Tattoo
Paper cranes are a well-known origami shape and have a deep connection to good fortune and desire. These also make for good tattoos, as they utilize simple geometric elements that still look like a complete bird—just with a bit of additional symbolism.
Mosaic Bird Tattoo
Don’t feel confined to black outlined designs if you want something geometric. For a more unique and colorful tattoo, create your bird design out of a number of vividly hued shapes rather than lines.
Negative Space Hummingbird Tattoo
For a more abstract design, try inking only the most important parts of the hummingbird: the beak, head, wings, and tail. Leaving a lot of negative space may feel like you’re breaking up the design, but it will actually play into the more abstract feel.
Sketched Watercolor Bird Tattoo
Because watercolor tattoos tend to utilize a lot of purposely placed but random-looking splashes of color, mimic that style in your bird outline as well. This tattoo uses sketch-looking lines that aren’t super precise to give the foreground image that artistic feel as well.
Bird Silhouette Tattoo
Sometimes the simplest things make the most impact! This tattoo features a small, blackwork bird placed at the top of a tall, thin tree, which draws your eye up to the animal.
Shoulder Bird Tattoo
Birds are a common symbol in traditional tattooing, and despite having a bold style, they can be placed anywhere and easily toned down to fit your style or the area. This bird is on the shoulder, which pops, but its minimal style also keeps it feeling light.
Geometric Background Bird Tattoo
A geometric bird tattoo doesn’t have to be fully created out of shapes or lines to give off the style. Instead, try using shapes and crisp lines as the background to a more typical style of tattoo.
If you want to add a bit of whimsy to your design without making the entire thing feel like a cartoon, pick one element of the tattoo to emphasize. While this owl ink uses thin, curved lines, the large, cartoon-like eyes are what make the piece feel fun but not over-the-top.
Dove & Rose Tattoo
To lighten up a dove tattoo with heavy black outlines that may feel a bit dark, consider using white ink to lighten it up and add dimension. Placing other light or bright elements, like the rose pictured here, may help as well.
Dove & Moon Tattoo
Doves tend to be a sign of peace, but they also hold a lot of femininity in their image. To play up that element of the bird, try adding other feminine elements, like the moon.
Colorful Kingfisher With a Solid Red Line Tattoo
Pilar Zurita
This piece is a colorful Kingfisher bird, which Zurita connected to a chicory flower and other existing tattoos with the movement of a solid red line. "The piece is representative of a very special trip that the individual took to Costa Rica, where the bird resides," Zurita explains.
Klimt-Inspired Golden Sparrow Tattoo
"This sparrow's wings were inspired by Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt's "golden phase" art style. This piece represents beauty and freedom," Zurita says.
Colorful Hummingbird Back Tattoo
This colorful hummingbird tattoo is the perfect addition to the client's pre-existing composition of back tattoos. "The addition of the hummingbird adds movement to the piece, and brings new color depths to the composition as well," Zurita adds.
Monet-Inspired Hummingbird Tattoo
Zurita says this hummingbird tattoo takes inspiration from French painter Claude Monet's art style. It is a unique piece that represents the love of a mother and her two sons.
Vibrant Bird On a Flower Tattoo
Koral Ladna
"My color work represents the energy, rather than the realistic color of the subject. This piece represents my client's connection to her new home in the American continent," Ladna explains.
Tree of Life With Hummingbirds Tattoo
This design is a traditional tree of life motif with hummingbirds, that represents the client’s family line. "Like much of my work, it is inspired by Ukrainian decorative painting," Ladna adds.
Talavera-Inspired Bird Tattoo
"This piece is a Mexican Talavera folk inspired design that honors the client's heritage," Ladna says.
Colorful California Quail BIrd Tattoo
Ladna says this tattoo is of a California Quail, which honors the client's roots and heritage. The tattoo features Ladna's Ukrainian decorative painting art style.

20 Sparrow Tattoos You’ll Want To Add To Your Ink Collection
By Author Lauren Dover
Posted on Last updated: May 20, 2024
Want to get a sparrow tattoo? Well, birds are common across tattoo styles thanks to their simplicity and symbolism. Birds represent freedom, courage, transformation, and even travel. Specific birds represent specific meanings, and you’re the one who needs to decide which bird represents you the most.
Going all the way back to the start of American traditional tattooing, birds were all the rage thanks to sailors who would oftentimes opt for swallow tattoos to make sure everyone knew they were sailors. Nowadays, bird tattoos tend to carry the meaning of far more than the said sailing experience.
Whether you’re considering an old-school sparrow tattoo, a fine-line tattoo that doesn’t attract too much attention, or a colorful tattoo that turns heads and raises questions, sparrow tattoos carry nothing but great symbolism. Sparrow tattoos are seen as symbols of hope, determination, and the beauty of nature.
With that out of the way, we’re more than happy to help you pick out the perfect ink out of the bunch. We’re bringing you a few of our favorite sparrow tattoos to get you started.
1. A tattoo of two house sparrows on the upper arm
Starting with a tattoo of two sparrows, you might want to amplify the meaning of the tattoo by opting for more than one element. You can add flowers, branches, or even sparkles to the tattoo, but by adding another sparrow, you’re playing with the “true love” meaning. You do you.
2. A cute cover-up tattoo with sparrows and flowers
A cover-up tattoo can be challenging to execute, but that’s not always the case. A cover-up tattoo with sparrows and flowers can be a great way to add more meaning and symbolism to the tattoo without going overboard or making the entire tattoo messy and meaningless.
3. A tattoo of a sweet sparrow that might or might not be dead
A sparrow tattoo typically represents purity, humility, and a bond you share with someone special – but that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. You might be on the hunt for something a little more edgy, extreme, and even scary. A tattoo of a dead sparrow (you can see the exposed ribcage, right?) might be the one.
4. A sparrow tattoo on the shoulder
A shoulder tattoo can be an excellent way for you to be able to conceal or reveal your tattoo, depending on your personal preferences. With a shoulder tattoo of a sparrow, you’re guaranteed to be the talk of the office or the dinner table at your parent’s house. How fun!?
5. A sparrow tattoo on the hand
We can’t say the same thing about a hand tattoo, though! When you get a hand tattoo, you need to be ready for the entire world to see it, comment on it, and even change your opinion on it. We suggest opting for a sparrow tattoo because you’re less likely to regret getting a tattoo of a beautiful bird.
6. A tiny sparrow tattoo on the collarbone
When you’re worried about the things we mentioned beforehand, though, you might want to opt for a tiny sparrow tattoo on the collarbone. Collarbone tattoos are sensual and seductive, but they’re *also* meant to be hidden from the rest of the world. Contrary to popular belief, collarbone birds aren’t basic.
7. A sparrow tattoo on the ribcage
While we’re on the topic of proper tattoo placement, a ribcage tattoo might be the right one for you. A ribcage tattoo can be an excellent way to experiment with diferent styles and symbols without worrying about the rest of the world. What about a sparrow tattoo on the ribcage?
8. A tattoo of two realistic sparrows on the upper arm
Getting a sparrow tattoo means spending hours and hours researching diferent styles to see which of the million might work for you and your personal preferences. A realistic sparrow tattoo might not be an easy one to execute, but you’re guaranteed to walk out of the tattoo parlor with a smile on your face.
9. A tattoo of two softly shaded sparrows
Softly shaded sparrows are (arguably) even more striking and symbolic than the realistic ones. Whether you’re a fan of softer tattoos or you’re willing to experiment with a style you’ve never tried before, we suggest opting for a softly shaded sparrow tattoo somewhere on the body.
10. A tattoo of a sparrow surrounded by flowers
When you’re unsure of which elements to add to your sparrow tattoo, you might want to play with flowers, branches, and botanical symbols that complement the sparrow perfectly. After all, flowers represent love, beauty, immortality, success, grief, struggle, and life.
11. A tattoo of a sparrow carrying an olive branch
A sparrow and an olive branch might be the perfect match. While a sparrow represents true love, an olive branch represents peace and prosperity. Whether you’re getting married or thinking of honoring your relationship, you might want to get a tattoo of a sparrow with an olive branch.
12. A sparrow tattoo on the back
We don’t know what we’re obsessed with more – the placement of the tattoo, the dainty and delicate sparrow, or the flower that complements the rest of the tattoo. When you’re on the hunt for an elegant, effortless tattoo that showcases your style, you might want to consider something similar to this one.
13. A tattoo of a sparrow with a name
What better way to make a sparrow tattoo more meaningful than to attach a name to it? Whether you opt for your own name to celebrate your strength and freedom or the name of someone special to you, we’re pretty sure you’re going to adore this tattoo more than any you’ve ever done before.
14. A tattoo of a white-throated sparrow sitting on a branch
When you’re getting a colorful tattoo, you might want to go for a white-throated sparrow to showcase the beauty of the bird. Bird tattoos can be basic and boring, but when you decide to get a colorful tattoo, you know you’re in for a treat.
15. A sparrow tattoo on the hip
You decided to get a sparrow tattoo but you don’t know what placement would work best for you? You might want to go for a sparrow tattoo on the hip. A hip tattoo offers you plenty of space to work with, as well as a canvas that can be easily concealed and revealed.
16. A sparrow tattoo on the leg
What about a leg tattoo? A leg tattoo might not be as popular and prominent as an arm tattoo or a back tattoo, but that doesn’t mean that you’re not allowed to do whatever you want. A sparrow on the leg can represent your willingness to travel and transform, as well as your freedom to go wherever you want.
17. A tattoo of two sparrows flying toward each other
When we were doing our research, we noticed that two sparrows are better than one – especially when we’re talking about tattoos. A tattoo of two sparrows can represent you and your BFF, you and your sibling, or even you and your partner, depending on the relationship you want to honor.
18. A sparrow tattoo with a sun
We love all the elements of this tattoo and we’re sure you’ll love them, too! When you decide to get a sparrow tattoo, you might want to add some flowers, branches, and sun to complete the meaning (as well as the design) of the tattoo. What’s not to love?
19. A tattoo of two sparrows on the collarbones
We already talked about how two sparrows are better than one, but we’re especially enamored with how these two sparrows are starting at the collarbones and flying toward each other. What a great concept – what do you think?
20. A sparrow tattoo across the abdomen
We’ve arrived at the end of the article with a sparrow tattoo across the abdomen – one of the biggest tattoos we’ve talked about today. An abdomen tattoo can be an excellent way for you to play with diferent styles and symbols, and a sparrow tattoo needs all the space you can spare.

Bird Tattoo Designs: What Does A Bird Tattoo Symbolize?
Since the beginning of time, birds seemed to have captured people’s imaginations. The tradition of getting a tattoo of a bird comes with a long history. Birds are often used as representations of power, wisdom, and independence. Don’t let their adorable features, like their fluffy feathers and big eyes, mislead you. These animals were descended from actual dinosaurs!
We embraced the resemblance of these birds in our tattoos, and each one of them has a distinct meaning, from the glare of an owl that inspires fear of death in us to the exquisite peacock feathers that symbolize riches and majesty. Specific birds also have their meanings, such as the dove, which stands for harmony, faith, and purity, or the phoenix, which denotes rebirth and second chances. Every factor of a person’s life, including culture, ethnicity, personality, and desires can be included and reflected in their bird tattoos.
Bird Tattoo Designs: Where Did The Bird Tattoo Originate From?
If you’re from an Asian country like India or Japan you must be aware that for hundreds of years, and even today, farmers in most parts of the world welcome the arrival of birds as they are thought to bring good fortune to the farm. They are also said to protect farm animals from diseases and crops from insects. Certain bird species, like swallows, were attributed to the gods and the souls of the dead in prehistoric artifacts.
The swallow was a symbol of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and was thought to bring luck and happiness in ancient Greece. In ancient Greece, the swallow represented Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and it was believed to bring good fortune and joy. Believers explain that Greek and Roman mythology gods could change themselves into birds when needed. Grieving mothers who lost their children considered the bird to be sacred, as it was thought to carry the soul of their deceased children; killing a bird was considered unlucky in many cultures in ancient times.
For sailors, bird tattoo designs have specific meanings. Typically, a sailor who has traveled for more than 5,000 miles will get a swallow tattoo to demonstrate that he is experienced. Bird tattoos are also considered lucky for sailors, who believe that if they drown, the birds will safely carry their souls to heaven. Britishers in the early days of their sailing tattooed the image of a Barn Swallow, usually tattooed on the chest, hands, or neck.
The birds were also associated with working-class pride in England, and many fighters tattooed birds like doves and swallow on their knuckles or fists to symbolize their strength and swiftness.
What Is The Most Popular Bird Tattoo Designs?
For many years in the 19th century, birds, especially swallows, were considered the symbol of approaching spring. The weather was predicted by the birds’ behavior. If they flew low, it meant rain; flying high meant good weather. There is some truth to that as low-pressure centers, which bring bad weather, are harder for birds to fly in.
Not only that but modern Christians see the swallow as a symbol of sacrifice and rebirth, as well as a symbol of new beginnings. Because of its rich history and cultural importance, swallows have become the most common and popular bird tattoo. They are frequently tattooed in pairs, and sometimes on their own.

Another reason why bird tattoos are popular is because they can be placed on various parts of the body, allowing for a range of sizes and designs. For instance, a small bird tattoo can be placed on the wrist or behind the ear, while a larger design can be placed on the back or chest. This versatility in placement and design makes bird tattoos a popular choice for those who want a meaningful and visually appealing tattoo.
Different Bird Species and Their Symbolic Meanings
There are many different species of birds, and each has its own symbolic meaning. For example, the eagle is commonly associated with power, freedom, and strength, while the dove is often seen as a symbol of peace, love, and hope. The swallow represents loyalty, luck, and devotion, while the peacock symbolizes beauty, pride, and extravagance. The hummingbird can signify resilience, agility, and joy, while the owl is associated with wisdom, mystery, and knowledge.
Other bird species also have their own symbolic meanings. The raven, for instance, is often associated with death and transformation, while the phoenix represents rebirth and renewal. The seagull can symbolize freedom and a carefree spirit, while the pelican is often seen as a symbol of selflessness and generosity. The swan is associated with grace, beauty, and purity, while the crow can signify intelligence, adaptability, and resourcefulness. Understanding the symbolic meanings of different bird species can help us appreciate their beauty and significance in our lives.
How Bird Tattoos Can Represent Freedom and Independence
Bird tattoos can represent freedom and independence due to their ability to fly and soar through the sky. This is why eagle or hawk tattoos are popular among those who seek to embody strength and independence. On the other hand, more delicate designs like the sparrow or swallow can also represent freedom, as they are known to travel long distances and come back home to their flock with unwavering loyalty.
In addition to representing freedom and independence, bird tattoos can also symbolize spirituality and a connection to nature. Many cultures believe that birds are messengers between the earthly and spiritual realms, and getting a bird tattoo can be a way to honor that belief. Additionally, certain birds like the phoenix or the owl have specific spiritual meanings, such as rebirth and wisdom, respectively. Overall, bird tattoos can hold a deep significance for those who choose to get them, and can serve as a reminder of their personal values and beliefs.
The Connection Between Birds and Spirituality In Various Cultures
Birds have long been associated with spirituality in various cultures. In many eastern religions, birds represent the soul and the divine. For example, the Phoenix in Japanese mythology is a legendary bird that dies and is reborn from its own ashes, representing renewal and immortality. In Norse mythology, the raven is a symbol of Odin, the god of knowledge and wisdom.
In Native American cultures, birds are also seen as spiritual messengers. The eagle, for instance, is considered a sacred bird and is believed to carry prayers to the heavens. The owl, on the other hand, is seen as a symbol of wisdom and intuition. In some African cultures, birds are believed to have the power to communicate with the spirit world and are often used in divination practices.
The Use of Birds in Mythology and Folklore
Birds have been used in mythology and folklore all over the world since ancient times. In Greek mythology, the Sirens were half-bird, half-woman creatures that used their intoxicating voices to lure sailors to their death. The Thunderbird in Native American culture was a giant bird capable of creating thunder and lightning. In Hindu mythology, the bird Garuda is a sacred creature and serves as the mount of the god Vishnu.
In addition to these well-known examples, birds have also played important roles in the mythology and folklore of many other cultures. In Norse mythology, the eagle was associated with the god Odin and was believed to be a symbol of wisdom and strength. In Chinese mythology, the phoenix was a symbol of rebirth and immortality, and was often depicted in art and literature.
Birds have also been used in folklore to explain natural phenomena. For example, in many cultures, the migration patterns of birds were seen as a sign of changing seasons. In some Native American cultures, the arrival of certain birds was believed to signal the beginning of spring or the start of a new year.
How to Choose the Right Bird Tattoo Design for You
Choosing the right tattoo for you can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to deciding on a design. It’s important to choose a design that speaks to you and represents what you want to convey. Consider the specific species of bird and the symbolic meaning it represents. Think about what style you want, whether it be realistic or abstract, black and white or full of color. Look at different artists’ portfolios to get inspiration for your design, and consider customizing your design to make it more unique to you.
Another important factor to consider when choosing a bird tattoo design is the placement of the tattoo on your body. Some designs may work better on certain areas of the body, such as a small bird on the wrist or a larger design on the back. Think about how visible you want the tattoo to be and whether it will affect your professional or personal life.
It’s also important to research the cultural significance of the bird species you are considering. Different cultures may have different meanings associated with certain birds, so it’s important to be aware of this before getting the tattoo. Additionally, consider the bird’s natural habitat and behavior, as this can also add meaning to your tattoo design.
Bird Tattoo Placement Options and Their Significance
The placement of your bird tattoo can also hold significance. If you want to show off your tattoo, you could consider getting it on your arm, chest, or back. If you want a more discreet tattoo, you could opt for a smaller design on your wrist, ankle, or behind your ear. The placement can also play into the meaning of the tattoo, such as getting an eagle tattoo on your chest to represent strength and power, or a dove on your wrist to represent peace and love.
Another factor to consider when choosing the placement of your bird tattoo is the size and intricacy of the design. A larger, more detailed tattoo may be better suited for a larger area of the body, such as the back or chest, while a smaller, simpler design may work well on the wrist or ankle.
It’s also important to think about the practicality of the placement. For example, if you work in a professional setting where tattoos are not allowed to be visible, you may want to choose a placement that can be easily covered by clothing. On the other hand, if you live in a warmer climate and often wear short sleeves or tank tops, a visible placement may be more suitable for you.
Tips for Caring for Your New Bird Tattoo
Once you’ve gotten your new tattoo, it’s important to take care of it properly to ensure it heals well and looks great for years to come. Follow your artist’s aftercare instructions carefully, which may include keeping the tattoo clean, moisturized, and protected from the sun. Avoid swimming, saunas, and hot tubs until your tattoo is completely healed, and avoid picking or scratching at it. With proper care, you’ll have a beautiful and long-lasting bird tattoo.
In addition to following your artist’s aftercare instructions, there are a few other things you can do to ensure your new bird tattoo stays looking its best. First, avoid wearing tight clothing or anything that may rub against the tattoo, as this can cause irritation and slow down the healing process. Secondly, be sure to stay hydrated and eat a healthy diet, as this can help promote faster healing. Finally, if you notice any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or discharge, be sure to contact your artist or a medical professional right away.
Famous People with Bird Tattoos and Their Meanings
Many celebrities have bird tattoos, each with their own meaning. For example, Miley Cyrus has a dreamcatcher tattoo with a small bird on her ribcage, symbolizing freedom and spiritual protection. Harry Styles has a pair of swallows on his chest that represent journey, a symbol popular among sailors, and even had one of the swallows modified to feature the letter “A” for his mother’s name. David Beckham also has multiple bird tattoos, including an eagle, swallow, and hummingbird, each holding personal significance for him.
The Evolution of Bird Tattoos Over Time
Bird tattoos have gone through many evolutions over time, with different trends and styles becoming popular in different eras. In the 1800s and early 1900s, bird tattoos were often associated with sailors and represented journeys and freedom. In the 1950s and 1960s, bird tattoos became more popular among women and represented femininity, grace, and beauty. Today, bird tattoos can have a wide range of meanings and are popular among both men and women of all ages.
Common Misconceptions About Bird Tattoo Symbolism
There are many misconceptions about the symbolism behind bird tattoos. For example, some people believe that a crow tattoo signifies death or bad luck, while in reality, a crow represents magic, intelligence, and fearlessness. Another common misconception is that a bird tattoo must represent flight or freedom, when in reality, different bird species can represent a wide variety of meanings. It is important to research the symbolic meanings of different birds before getting a tattoo to ensure you convey the message you want.
How to Incorporate Other Elements into Your Bird Tattoo Design
If you want to add even more personal meaning to your bird tattoo, consider incorporating other elements into the design. For example, you could add a banner with a quote or phrase, or include your loved one’s initials or birthdate. You could also incorporate elements of nature, such as flowers or leaves, or include a particular landscape that holds significance for you.
The Relationship Between Bird Tattoos and Nature or Environmentalism
Bird tattoos can also be associated with nature and environmentalism. Many people choose bird tattoos to show their love and connection to nature, and to promote awareness about environmental issues. Some bird tattoos may also feature endangered or threatened species, with the goal of raising awareness and inspiring conservation efforts.
Bird Tattoos as a Symbol of Strength and Resilience
Bird tattoos can also represent strength and resilience. Birds are known for their ability to overcome adversity and adapt to changing circumstances. Getting a bird tattoo can serve as a reminder of your own strength and resilience, and help you overcome personal challenges.
In conclusion, bird tattoos are a beautiful and meaningful design that can hold a wide range of symbolic meanings. Whether you choose an eagle to represent strength and power or a hummingbird to represent resilience and joy, your bird tattoo can be a powerful reminder of your own personal values and beliefs.

Wanderlust tattoos or travel tattoos are gradually becoming more and more popular with each passing day. Their rich symbolism and exceptionally unique ways of framing an entire concept with a minimalist approach are what makes them so special.
Domestic travelling or that to a foreign country is always a refreshing experience. Travelling is a great option to explore and learn about different cultures. It allows one to be exposed to different dialects, food, music and whatnot. It brings people together on the ground of humanity despite being diverse in many aspects. Travelling to unknown and new places enables one to get out of their comfort zone and learn about traditions and cultures that differ from those of their own. The stress of work, relationships, family lives makes it important for people to travel for the sake of their mental health and happiness. Travelling helps individual growth and development. Travelling has also been proven to improve physical health. It teaches people to be responsible, independent and innovative. Listening to new languages being spoken and eating new cuisines can be a learning experience. Travelling helps the traveller gain a sense of their true self and rediscover who they really are. And what could be a better memory than that of you (alone or with others) feeling happy at a place you don’t come from? Travelling to some places gives you the thrill and excitement of adventurous activities like trekking, paragliding, bungee jumping, rafting, rock climbing and many more. And if you’re really lucky, you could even gain some new friends on your journey too. Travel or adventure tattoos come in different sizes, shapes and designs. From mountains to sea waves, anything can be a travel tattoo. They often feature a compass, palm trees, the globe, world map, aeroplanes, bikes, boats, ships and many other things. And what could be a better way to display one’s love for travelling than getting a tattoo that has any of these elements in it? So, if you love travelling from the core of your heart, we have got you covered with some eye-catching and wonderful travel tattoo designs you’ll be mesmerised by:
All In One Travel Tattoo
This tattoo features almost all the things that represent wanderlust. This travel tattoo has symbols (from top to bottom) like The Creation of Adam, an atom, a tent, the dial of a compass, a globe, the world map, the sun, a palm tree, a surfboard and waves of either a sea or an ocean. This tattoo could be an inspiration as well as a constant reminder of the fact that the wearer of this tattoo needs a life full of adventure and travelling. This black ink tattoo is a beautiful combination of many things put together in a small space using basic designs and shapes. Thus, this stunning piece of art demands a skilled pair of hands of a tattoo artist.
Travel Tattoo For Ankle
Travelling means searching for one’s lost soul. Be it wandering around the globe, visiting the beach or going on a full-fledged voyage, it all heals the same way. This tattoo is more appropriate for those who are into seas and oceans than those who are into mountains and hills. This ankle tattoo contains the globe, the world map on the globe, a seashell and an ocean wave at the bottom and top, respectively. This eye-catching tattoo might look simple, but it needs minute detailing in a small space such as the ankle or the wrist. If you need the tattoo to be neatly done, start looking for skilled artists already. Heads up, since ankle tattoos fade sooner than other tattoos, you might have to redo this one every two to three years.
Compass And The World Travel Tattoo
This forearm tattoo features four arrows pointing at north, south, east, and west, connected at the centre. And around the arrows, we can see a world map, a compass-like figure, mountains, and a black airplane. The world map represents the desire to explore the world, while the mountains are symbolic of one’s love for nature, and the plane portrays freedom to wander. The shading and the highlighting make the tattoo absolutely amazing and gorgeous. And the lines and circles make it appear to be a lot more than just cool. This tattoo is quite intricate which means it would need an artist with expertise to be inked. And if you are into adventures and want your tattoo to tell your story, getting this inked would be a great idea.
The Mountains and Compass Travel Tattoo
Mountains in a tattoo depict one’s love for nature and, more specifically, mountaineering. Compasses in a tattoo epitomise the discovery of new directions and navigating a journey. And birds flying in a tattoo portrays independence, liberty and/or the will to roam free. And what do we get by combining these three into one single tattoo? A travel tattoo. The black and grey shading on the mountains and especially on the compass looks so good that it almost seems to be real. We can also spot a significant amount of white ink being used in this one. If it’s your first trip to the tattoo parlour, then get this done on your forearm or calf. It wouldn’t be too painful, and even if it is, we promise you the experience will be worth it.
Small Ocean And Moon Travel Tattoo
It might be coincidental, but the waves in this tattoo look a bit like The Great Wave off Kanagawa. And it also features a moon. We all know that the moon’s gravitational pull leads to tides on two sides of the Earth. And just like the moon pulls the water, the desire to travel pulls the traveller or the voyager towards satisfying their wanderlust. This tattoo could be a stunning wrist or ankle tattoo as well. The smallness of the tattoo makes it more difficult for the tattoo artist to trace the complex details onto human skin. But if you know an artist you can trust, feel free to go for this one.
Colourful Aeroplane Travel Tattoo
This travel tattoo will work really well for those who have dreamt of travelling across the world since the very beginning of their lives, even if they have not been able to satisfy their wanderlust yet. It is also a great choice for those who simply love to fly from one place to another. It flaunts the adventurous nature of the owner of the tattoo pretty well. The colours used in this tattoo are what make this artwork vibrant and cool to look at. It is also appropriate for people of all ages irrespective of their genders and races. With a sanitary tattoo studio that has an expert tattoo artist, you’ll be all set to get this one inked.
Minimalist Mountains Travel Tattoo
Mountain tattoos are quite popular among people who love travelling. Not only do they look beautiful, but they are also associated with some great symbols. This one is a perfect tattoo for those who do not like to sit back at home and relax but want to explore and go on adventurous journeys. This tattoo looks like an uncomplicated drawing with a minimum amount of shading done using dotwork technique. If you want something simple and minimalist to flaunt your love for mountaineering or trekking, you should definitely get an appointment with your tattoo artist asap. Because we can, without fail, assure you that you would not regret getting this one inked on yourself.
Arrow Themed Travel Tattoo
This travel tattoo features the world map in a circle, a branch of a tree and an arrow pointing downwards. We already know what a world map or globe tattoo represents. So the question is, why is an arrow incorporated in this tattoo? Well, arrow tattoos usually portray struggle and victory as an arrow is used as a weapon. Thus, this tattoo is a symbol of one’s struggle to fulfil their dream of travelling and succeeding to do so in the end. Even if it has taken you a long time to make your dreams come true, it is never too late to get a tattoo that depicts your journey. So, what are you waiting for? Go book an appointment with your tattoo artist now.
Globe And Leaves Of A Palm Tree Travel Tattoo
This globe tattoo is a beautiful travel tattoo that would look good on anyone and everyone. The aeroplane on the globe represents wanderlust, one’s desire to see the world and move from one place to another in order to do so. And the use of palm leaves is also symbolic of travelling because palm trees usually grow in tropical and subtropical regions. Hence the palm leaves in this tattoo represent travelling around the world, exploring nature and its diversity. The dotwork and black ink shading look really amazing on this tattoo. And so if you love this design and are sure about it, wait no more and go for it.
World Map Outline Travel Tattoo
This minimalist tattoo of the world map is quite amazing in its own way. It depicts one’s love for travelling around the world and exploring new things. It means that the bearer of the tattoo wants to experience all of what the world has to offer to us. This travel tattoo is a beautiful yet simple piece of artwork that would look good on any body part of any person. The best part is that the pain and the money needed to get this inked will be just as minimal as the tattoo itself. So, if you want a basic tattoo that would represent your wanderlust despite being simple, this is exactly what you should go for.

210 Stunning Bird Tattoos And Their Symbolic Meanings
Birds have always been a popular element of tattoos – they never go out of style. Meaningful and elegant, suiting any aesthetic from traditional to contemporary, bird designs remain one of the top choices for tattoos.
Whether you’re considering having a specific bird tattooed, like a hummingbird or a raven, or just considering a bird tattoo in general, check out the gallery below for some gorgeous designs. In the meantime, keep reading for some detailed info on the symbolic and cultural meaning of birds in tattoo art.
Cultural significance
The cultural significance of birds is complex and varies wildly depending on the culture and specific type of bird in question. One thing is for sure: birds have been an important mythological and sometimes spiritual element in most, if not all, cultures across the world.
The winged creatures have been considered everything from messengers of the gods to harbingers of death. If you have a specific bird in mind for your tattoo design and identify strongly with a particular culture or religion, be sure to look further into the relevant symbolism and meanings. In general, though, birds tend to be seen as a positive symbol, most often representing freedom, peace, and liberation.
Bird tattoo meanings
Though the symbolism of birds is complicated, there are some values that are universally associated with at least certain species of birds. For instance:
- Freedom – You’re bound to have heard the phrase ‘free as a bird’. The bird’s ability to fly has always fascinated humanity, and carries obvious associations to freedom of body and spirit. For Americans, the eagle is one of the most prominent symbols of freedom.
- Wisdom – Owls, in particular, are often used as a symbol of wisdom and knowledge. Perhaps this notion of birds as wise stems from the fact that they literally have a bird’s-eye view of the world, which makes us think they see and therefore know everything. Interestingly, though, not all cultures view owls as related to wisdom – for most Native American tribes, for instance, owls are feared and associated with death.
- Goodness – In some cultures and religions, birds symbolize goodness – righteousness, empathy, virtue, and morality. In Christianity, for example, thanks to their possession of wings, birds are seen as akin to angels.
- Beauty – This one is fairly obvious – many people consider birds to be beautiful and graceful creatures. The elusiveness of birds adds further appeal – birds are flighty creatures, and being able to observe one up-close makes for a special moment.
- Love – Some species of birds are widely associated with love – just think of the word ‘lovebirds’, or ‘love-nest’. White doves in particular are seen as a symbol of love and purity – so much so that wedding ceremonies sometimes involve the releasing of doves. Swans, too, are related to the notion of love – particularly faithfulness. This is because they are meant to mate for life, meaning that once they’ve found a partner, they stay together until death.
- Peace – In addition to representing love, doves are also seen as symbolic of peace and pacifism in general. This is true both of political contexts and religious symbolism.
Bird tattoo design ideas
The possibilities for including a bird in a tattoo design are endless, and depend on both personal preference and the meaning you want your tattoo to convey. If you’re stuck for ideas, consider these:
- Birds on the wrist – A charming and highly popular option is a small bird tattoo on the inside of the wrist. Since bird tattoos can be scaled down to a truly minute size, you could even have several birds within one very small design. A flock of birds in flight is a popular choice, as are several birds perched on a wire or tree branch.
- Dove – As we’ve already discovered, doves are symbolic of peace and love. They are also associated with innocence and purity of spirit. If these values are something you identify with, a dove tattoo design could be perfect for you.
- Tweety bird – The popular Looney Tunes character graces the skin of millions around the world in tattoo form. For a playful, colorful design that shows off the less serious side of you, Tweety could be an option.
- Phoenix – The phoenix is a mythical bird which, according to legends of many cultures across the world, would burst into flame and be born again from its own ashes. A symbol of perseverance and overcoming obstacles, the fire bird makes for a gorgeous and meaningful tattoo design.
- Swallow – Swallows have extensive symbolic meaning, generally seen as associated with love and happiness. It’s no surprise, then, that matching swallow tattoos for couples are quite popular. Historically, though, swallow tattoos were the design of choice for sailors, indicative of their sailing experience. Legend has it that for a sailor, each swallow tattoo signified 5,000 nautical miles sailed.
- Hummingbird – there are so many different meanings associated with this particular species of bird, that hummingbirds basically have their very own mythology. In general, it’s universally viewed as a positive symbol, often related to healing, good luck, and good news. Have a read through this article to find out more about specific hummingbird symbolism and meanings.
- Peacock – Peacock tattoos can be nothing short of spectacular – thanks to the coloring of the bird’s feathers and its unique looks. Symbolic of integrity, rejuvenation, and even immortality, the peacock is a great choice for a larger design in particular.
- Crow or Raven – Mysterious and enigmatic, crow and raven imagery has always been popular in tattoo art. Ravens commonly appear both in traditional styles and contemporary ones, and the finished tattoos often have a dark, gothic feel.
Placement Options
Of all the common tattoo elements and images, birds are one of the most scalable – you can have a bird tattoo any size, from a few millimeters across to covering your entire back. Popular placements include:
- Back – The back is the obvious choice for the largest and most complex designs, such as a bold phoenix tattoo or an image with several birds in flight, for example. Of course, you don’t have to use the whole area – a smaller tattoo on the upper or lower back can also look awesome.
- Calves – Calves are perfect for vertically elongated designs, such one large bird in a perching position or several birds in flight. Relatively easy to cover up with clothing when necessary.
- Chest – Bird tattoos on the chest are also highly popular, and this area can work perfectly for both small and large tattoos. Consider a small design below your collarbone or a larger one on your lower chest area.
- Wrist – Tiny, all-black bird-themed tattoos on the wrist are the height of fashion these days and you’ll see lots of examples of this type of design. Subtle and elegant, they are also the perfect choice for your first tattoo.
Final words
Birds have fascinated humanity since times immemorial – with both their beauty and their incredible ability to take flight. It’s no surprise that they feature so heavily in tattoo art, especially considering all the other advantages of bird designs – wide variety of aesthetic options and symbolic meanings, scalability, and universal appeal.
