EXPLORE THE ACROPOLIS

The Virtual Tour of the Acropolis monuments consists of high-resolution gigapixel images and panoramas of the most prominent monuments - the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike - as well as detailed photographic displays of selected views from the outer surface of the ancient walls surrounding the hill. Each view is complemented with descriptive information about the monuments and selected areas of interest.

An orthophoto map of the site’s area facilitates orientation and navigation of the visitor to each viewpoint. The images allow detailed zooming onto the architectural features of the monuments, which are otherwise difficult to experience during an onsite visit. Visitors can comprehend the location of the monuments in relation to its surroundings or even to realize a virtual "walk" through the site by selecting at will their own successive viewpoints.

CONTRIBUTORS

The application is an initiative of the Acropolis Restoration Service (YSMA) and comprises an upgrade from a previous version with a focus on extending the app’s functionality to both stationary and portable devices. The decision to adopt "state of the art" technological solutions to "bring online" the entirety of the archaeological site is not merely a statement for the preservation work undertaken by the institution, but also a great contribution to the institution's mission to promote access to cultural heritage. Enhanced visual access may be used as a starting point for interested parties and potential visitors to get to know the monuments, but also as a scientific or educational tool to enable research in various disciplines.

The application has been created through the collaboration of the Documentation Office of YSMA with Culturplay that specializes in the provision of digital media solutions and interarctive tools for the cultural heritage domain.

The following people worked for this application: YSMA - Project supervision, Content management: E. Lempidaki, I. Alexopoulos, M. Katsianis, K. Koutsadelis, D. Mavromati, E.Petropoulou

  • Culturplay - Project production
  • Design, Programming, Image Processing: A. Giannakidis
  • Panoramic Photography: G. Gerogiannis
  • Technology Consultant: A. Skorjanc
  • Programming: Y. Stergiou, G. Giakoumidakis, G. Papadakis
  • Typography: A. Mouriadou, E. Bountouraki
  • Production Support: L. Mantzourani

PRODUCTION DETAILS

The production of panoramic photomosaics at resolutions of several gigapixels was realised between 2010 and 2014 by employing established practices of digital image acquisition and processing.

In order to achieve the best possible mapping of natural lighting on the monuments together with the display of shaded details, High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging techniques were used for capturing and combining different exposure levels of the same theme.

Starting from the RAW photos all the way up to the combined and color-corrected finalised panoramas, all intermediate outputs were maintained in order to be able to reproduce and control the entire manufacturing process for future reference.

The krpano viewer and revelant tools are used for the display of the panoramic images within the application. Techniques to minimize the optical deformation of the monuments were applied during the construction of the photomosaics and are also used for their rendering within the application.

Particular emphasis was also placed on the typographic formatting of all textual information included, especially with respect to its effective adaptation to different screen sizes. Moreover, a series of interface controls were developed to facilitate user navigation tasks on touch screens.

The contents of the application are stored in a Content Delivery Network that significantly accelerates data serving to end-users.

Enjoy an Augmented Reality 3D Date with the Acropolis

  • Copied to clipboard

It’s a rare few who can tread upon the sacred rock of the Parthenon —where history and humanity have seeped into every sun-baked column and marble block—and not tap into the extraordinary energy that this ancient wonder emits. If you’re anything like us, that heightened sense comes with a longing to reach down through the centuries and experience what the Acropolis once felt like, before time and the elements left their mark. We’ve caught wind of a way you can do just that.

Thanks to an augmented and virtual reality tool, supported by archaeologists, you can actually visualise all the temples and statues of the Acropolis as they were 2,000 years ago, while you walk around the present-day site. The immersive experience by Moptil , who make AR & VR Apps for 3D reconstructions of major archaeological sites, allows you to view the Parthenon replete with its original decorations and even step inside to conjure the nine-metre tall golden ivory statue of goddess Athena as she was, by using their specially-configured tablet or VR goggles. You can also revive lost monuments, such as the Temple of Zeus, the temple of Diana (among others) in all their 360 degree glory, see how different the Acropolis looked during the Christian and Ottoman Periods, and witness an ancient Athenian priestess pouring olive oil onto a sacred altar.

To access the experience, you’ll need to book in advance on the Moptil website and head to a designated meet-up point near the Acropolis to collect your iPad device. Can’t wait ‘til lockdown lifts? You can also download the app on your own device ( Android / iOS ) to unlock this fun and educational content to enjoy at home or off-site too. Here’s a small taste of what you’ll see!

Price: 18 Euros per person with tablet and 10 Euros per person for access to the App code-username to download on your own device (valid for one year). Group discounts apply.

Greece's Crown Jewel: A 360° Tour of the Acropolis (Video)

  • Read Later

Uncover the marvels of the ancient Acropolis in Athens through a captivating 360-degree tour by the BBC. The Parthenon, an iconic monument at the heart of this sacred hill, captures immediate attention. Yet, there's more to explore in the shadows, like the Eriktheion, a smaller temple with equal importance, dedicated to the mythical King Erechtheis. The Porch of the Caryatids, guarded by six striking maidens for millennia, marks the grave of King Kekrops, the legendary founder of Athens. From above, the Eriktheion's intentional asymmetry becomes evident, a deliberate design choice by ancient Greeks. A gap in the roof aligns directly above the spot where Zeus's thunderbolt purportedly struck and claimed the life of King Erechtheis.

Greek mythology further intertwines with the temple's history as it is believed to be the site of a contest between Poseidon and Athena, leading to the city's renaming as Athens. Celebrating these sacred and mythological events, the Eriktheion stands as a lasting tribute to the city's profound ancient legacy. While not all of us get to visit sites like this in person, amazing digital tours like this mean everyone gets a chance to visit.

Virtual Antiquity: See the Parthenon Marbles in 360 Video

Be transported to room 18 in the british museum where greece's most famous sculptures are kept..

Greece Is | January 16th, 2018

The technology of virtual reality may still be in its relatively early days, but it looks set to revolutionize the ways that we can experience museum exhibits and cultural sites from afar. Soon the rudimentary ‘virtual tours’ many museums have on their websites will likely seem dated and obsolete, pushed out by the far more immersive experiences available via virtual reality headsets.

An early taste of the potential for this technology can be seen in the video above. Created by VR360 Immersive Media , a Greece-based team, the short 2-minute video published last week offers 360 degree views of Room 18 in the British Museum, where the Parthenon Sculptures (aka the Elgin Marbles) are on display.

Just by clicking on the video above one can look around the hall as if you were actually there. Better yet, put on a virtual reality headset (or VR goggles that work with a mobile phone such as Google Cardboard) and be transported to London.

So now regardless of whether you believe the sculptures should stay in London or be returned to Athens, you can enjoy the experience of visiting them from the comfort of your own home.

The Parthenon and Ancient Athens, an animated virtual tour

Go back in time to Ancient Athens in the late 5th century B.C.E., “the way it would look in the years before the defeat in the Peloponnesian War ” (431 to 405 B.C.E.). This 6.5-minute CGI reconstruction by Ancient Athens 3D provides a 3D-rendered tour of The Parthenon , the most famous building in Greece . From the caption:

“It is a temple made of white Pentelic marble and was dedicated to goddess Athena , the patroness of the city of Athens. The construction began in 447 BC after the orders of the Athenian statesman Pericles . The architects were Iktinos and Callicrates , while the supervisor of the sculpture decoration was Phidias . The construction was completed in 438 BC and the last sculptures were placed in 432 BC.”

inside the Parthenon

“It is a buildingof doric architecture , combining features of the Ionic order , too. The sculptures can be divided in three types: the metopes , the pediments , and the frieze . “Most of the Parthenon sculptures were taken in 1801-1812 by Lord Elgin and are now in the British Museum while most of the rest are in the Acropolis Museum .”

Statue detail

“The city of Athens was completely destroyed by the Persian army in the years 480-479 BC. In the years that followed, the Athenians managed to rebuild their city and by the middle of the 5th century BC, the statesman and general Pericles ordered an extensive construction programme that made Athens the centre of classical Greece.”

The Agoura

“It was the time when the great temples on the Acropolis hill were built (Parthenon, Erechtheion ) and many buildings of public administration for the Athenian Democracy … “The 3d reconstructions were made after the most recently published international research and a great effort was made to be as accurate as possible. Of course, simplifications and artistic license are present in order to technically manage a big project as this one.”

↓ 360° VR Walking Tour Parthenon and Erechtheion Acropolis Athens Greece 5K 3D

Description.

The Parthenon (/ˈpɑːrθəˌnɒn, -nən/; Ancient Greek: Παρθενών; Greek: Παρθενώνας, Parthenónas) is a former temple[4][5] on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Construction began in 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at the peak of its power. It was completed in 438 BC, although decoration of the building continued until 432 BC.

It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered the zenith of the Doric order[by whom?]. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, Athenian democracy and Western civilization,[6] and one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments. To the Athenians who built it, the Parthenon and other Periclean monuments of the Acropolis were seen fundamentally as a celebration of Hellenic victory over the Persian invaders and as a thanksgiving to the gods for that victory.[7] The Parthenon itself replaced an older temple of Athena, which historians call the Pre-Parthenon or Older Parthenon, that was destroyed in the Persian invasion of 480 BC.

The temple is archaeo astronomically aligned to the Hyades.[8] Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon served a practical purpose as the city treasury.[9][10] For a time, it served as the treasury of the Delian League, which later became the Athenian Empire. In the final decade of the 6th century AD, the Parthenon was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. After the Ottoman conquest, it was turned into a mosque in the early 1460s. On 26 September 1687, an Ottoman ammunition dump inside the building was ignited by Venetian bombardment during a siege of the Acropolis. The resulting explosion severely damaged the Parthenon and its sculptures. From 1800 to 1803,[11] Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin removed some of the surviving sculptures, now known as the Elgin Marbles, with the alleged permission of the Turks of the Ottoman Empire.[12] Since 1975 numerous large-scale restoration projects have been undertaken; the latest is expected to finish in 2020.[13]

Erechtheion

The Erechtheion or Erechtheum (/ɪˈrɛkθiəm, ˌɛrɪkˈθiːəm/; Ancient Greek: Ἐρέχθειον, Greek: Ερέχθειο) is an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens in Greece which was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. The temple as seen today was built between 421 and 406 BC. Its architect may have been Mnesicles, and it derived its name from a shrine dedicated to the legendary Greek hero Erichthonius. The sculptor and mason of the structure was Phidias, who was employed by Pericles to build both the Erechtheum and the Parthenon.

Some have suggested that it may have been built in honor of the legendary king Erechtheus, who is said to have been buried nearby. Erechtheus was mentioned in Homer’s Iliad as a great king and ruler of Athens during the Archaic Period, and Erechtheus and the hero Erichthonius were often syncretized. It is believed to have been a replacement for the Peisistratid temple of Athena Polias destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC.[2]
