How to make the most of 2024 Woodward Dream Cruise: When it starts, where to park, events

Portrait of Liam Rappleye

On Saturday, about 1 million car enthusiasts will converge upon metro Detroit with the same goal: appreciating sweet rides.

But the festivities don't start Saturday — the Dream Cruise is a weeklong celebration that began in 1995. Car collectors slowly cruise along Woodward Avenue from Ferndale to Pontiac, with plenty of special events along the way. For many, the annual event is a hallmark of the last days of summer, taking place on the third Saturday of every August.

As the annual celebration of automotive history approaches, here is everything you need to know to make the most of it.

Where to park for Dream Cruise

For an event targeted at car enthusiasts, it can be hard to get a car to the area. The 16-mile cruise makes Woodward Avenue partially inaccessible. Attendees should expect to get their steps in while walking from a parking lot to the heart of the car show.

According to the Woodward Dream Cruise's official website , each city along the route will offer public parking.

In Birmingham , cruise-related activities will be within walking distance of the parking decks located downtown, which are free for the first two hours of parking.

In Ferndale , the genesis of the cruise, several public parking lots surround downtown.

In Pontiac , public lots and parking garages dot the map around the downtown area, where the cruise will come to a close amid a slew of other activities.

In Royal Oak , public parking lots within walking distance from Woodward will be available, though in high demand. Additional parking will be available at the Royal Oak Golf Center, Gunn Dyer Park and Upton Park near Coolidge Highway.

To find a specific parking solution for the weekend, visit the Woodward Dream Cruise parking information Facebook page , where you can find the right place to reserve a spot.

Ditch the car, take the bus.

On Saturday, SMART buses will provide a free shuttle service for people hoping to attend the cruise without the stress of finding a parking spot.

To catch a ride, just hop on at any red SMART or FAST stop along Woodward from Ferndale to Pontiac. The free shuttles, which are wheelchair accessible and equipped with bike racks, will be available from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Cruising Experience with Genting Dream by Dream Cruises

Check out my experience on board with Genting Dream Cruise – what activities you can do, restaurants to try, and list of entertainments including shows and casino!

I did the cruising twice, one was 5D4N Singapore – Surabaya – North Bali – Singapore , the second one was 3D2N cruising from Singapore – Port Klang – Singapore .

When was the last time I did cruising, nearly 18 years ago!

Yep, I was still a little kid at that time.

I could only recall a few things, things that of course a kid would love – swimming pool, circus, and casino.

Wait, casino? How was a kid supposed to know about casino?

Easy, that’s where my parents would go right after me and my siblings fell asleep.

And now, 18 years later, I had a chance to be back on cruise again – this time with Genting Dream Cruise .

So, let’s jump in to my Genting Dream Cruise review!

Getting on Board with Genting Dream Cruise

Entering the port, I saw this big building on distance, and it wasn’t a building.

It’s the ship that I’m going to board, man it’s huge!

The port was busy, with guests from the cruise hopping down on shore to get souvenirs or just to stay on land.

While some other local audiences just hang around the port to marvel this big ship, something that can be rarely seen.

We cleared the registration ( make sure you bring your passport ) and headed up to the room.

I had a double room with a balcony outside . It’s bigger than I thought.

The bed was super comfy, seriously I had perfect sleep throughout the night.

There’s a sofa to lay down when I’m not wearing my pajamas, complete set of sandals and bathrobes, oh and I love their shower gel, smells good.

The little balcony is perfect to chill or to watch sunset.

I’m super ready to explore Genting Dream Cruise!

Eat while you can

One of a friend told me; before you start cruising, measure your weight and after you’re back home, you’ll be surprised!

Now I understand why.

There’s no way to not stuffing yourself with all these yummy food.

With restaurants serving high quality food, ranging from Asian to Western Cuisine, you’ll forget all your dietaries rule and, just feed yourself.

The inclusive restaurants in Genting Dream are Lido Restaurant and Dream Dining Room .

Lido Restaurant serves more varieties of food with buffet style while Dream Dining Room serves Chinese cuisine.

I had my breakfast normally in these restaurants.

The other restaurants that I also tried were the Hotpot, Bistro by Mark Best, Blue Lagoon, and Umi Uma .

blue lagoon restaurant genting dream cruise review

If I had to choose one of my favorite restaurants ,  I think I’ll go for Bistro by Mark Best and Umi Uma ( sorry, I can’t decide between these two ).

I think the food at the Bistro is just on another level for fine dining.

The tenderloin steak was soft and juicy with seasoning on point and the mouth-watering matcha mousse just melt when you take a spoon of it.

Thinking of it now makes me regret, why didn’t I order more food?

Tenderloin steak the Bistro Genting Dream

My other favorite restaurant in Genting Dream Cruise is Umi Uma Restaurant .

You can guess from its name that it’s a Japanese Restaurant, meaning that there’ll be sushi, sashimi, bento, udon ( I love them all!).

The highlight of this restaurant is the teppanyaki performance .

You’ll be sitting around a table with a chef cooking right on your face.

The chefs are very entertaining.

They pull off some fun attractive moves such as singing, juggling, like, spinning the eggs and throw them to the chef’s hat while cooking your food.

I really enjoy the interactions between the chefs and the guests, the atmosphere in the restaurant is full of excitement.

You definitely have to go to Umi Uma.

Other activities and entertainments in Genting Dream Cruise

Frankly, I was thinking what could I do inside the ship for such a long time.

But after all the experiences in Genting Dream Cruise, clearly there’s nothing to worry about.

There are so many things to do and you won’t get bored for sure.

Again, the ship is huge. Sometimes I still forgot the direction back to my room.

Let’s have a look what’s inside Genting Dream, shall we?

1. Zodiac Theater

Every night there will be show scheduled in Zodiac Theater.

With shimmering outfits and stage, the talented performers will stun you with their dancing skills and acrobatic movements.

Voyage of the Lovers Dream is a must to watch in Genting Dream Cruise.

The theatrical show will take you to a fantasy world of the unique love story between the mermaid and the astronaut.

Some dances can be powerful, some features remarkable ballet moves. For me it’s a night to remember.

entertainment in genting dream cruise

2. The Bridge Tour

See what it’s like to be on a captain seat with the Bridge Tour.

The Bridge is the most important area of the ship where the captain and his officers control and ensure that the ship runs safely on the sea.

The crew, as a guide will explain how to see the numbers on screen telling the depth of the sea, the speed, etc.

You may also have a conversation with the friendly officers.

the bridge captain room

3. Pool, Water Slide, and Sportplex

Pool and sportplex area always get busy during the day.

There’s always be activities prepared by the crew such as games, aerobic, and many more.

I didn’t try the water slide but I bet it’s gonna be fun.

There’s even a basketball court on the ship! I did the wall-climbing, rope course, and the flying-fox.

The flying-fox is one of my best experience on the ship, it’s nerve-wrecking.

Imagine you’re zip-lining from one end to another with wide open sea below, and it’s like 35 meters high!

playground dream cruise

4. Crystal Life Fitness and Spa

You may eat a lot but at least gotta burn some calories, agree?

Head to the Crystal Life Fitness Center in Genting Dream Cruise and do some cardio workout or weight-lifting, even better.

Believe me, doing workout facing the sea is not things you can do regularly, except on the cruise-so make it count!

Then you can spoil yourself with the spa treatment, what a life!

5. Bar Hopping!

Need a bit of alcohol intake to make yourself a bit more relax?

Bars are just on every corner of Dream Cruise.

If you’d like to drink while getting your tan line under the sun then Pool Deck Bar or Sun Deck Bar is the place for you.

Champagne lovers? Straight to the Bubbles Champagne Bar .

I prefer the Johnnie Walker House as a fan of whisky ( sounds like an old man, eh ).

Look at this gorgeous Whisky Constellation Wall, offering a comprehensive index of Scotch whisky distilleries.

6. Zouk Club and Zouk Beach Club

Surprisingly, my favorite club, Zouk is inside the Genting Dream.

I was a regular at the Zouk Club Kuala Lumpur and knowing that there’s another Zouk inside the cruise reminds me of that old nights.

The DJs were great, also the lights and lasers are sick, surely meet the Zouk’s standard.

If you wanna chill a bit you can go next door to play bowling or billiard.

Another best moment in the Dream Cruise.

7. Genting Casino

Like my parents, cruising is a fun way to spend your money and bet for your luck in the casino.

Get the chips ready and hit the table, who knows you’ll bring a suitcase of dollars back home.

I don’t really see many tables on board. However, there’re some slot machines that you can play with.

The minimum bet for casino tables in Genting Dream Cruise ranges between SGD 100 – 200 .

For the machines, it shouldn’t cost that much, maybe around SGD 10 .

8. Party and Fireworks

The last night on the ship was full of blast! Everyone’s just dancing and had fun in the main pool deck.

No matter young or old, people just dance to the music and follow the movements by the crew on the stage, like a flashmob.

Looks like everyone enjoying their time, including me.

Before calling it a night, we watched the fireworks on the sea and time for sweet dreams.

Second time with Genting Dream Cruise

Far flung in the middle of the sea, a ship – immensely built and designed to award holiday-seekers with its most luxurious experience – sailed across the Malacca Strait from Singapore to Malaysia.

The art piece on the both sides of the vessel is tastefully crafted to leave a strong impression to anyone who lays eyes on it.

Genting Dream Cruise Singapore , set on its journey to entertain more than 3,000 passengers on board, including myself.

That could be a nice narrative for an intro or trailer of a movie, can you imagine that? haha .

I think I’m trying to hard to put a nice words – which I love to try for learning and practicing my writing.

So, recently I just had a trip with Genting Dream Cruise ( again! ) and I’m very excited to share it with you guys.

As you might have known, this was my second time, as always, it never failed to please me.

My Genting Dream Cruise Singapore Experience: Enroute Singapore – Port Klang – Singapore

The route that I had this time was an easy and fun 3D2N, cruising from Singapore to Port Klang and back to Singapore .

It’s also the most popular since it’s do-able for weekend trip.

Once I arrived at Marina Bay Cruise Centre , the giant ship was waiting calmly before embarking to its destination, Port Klang in Malaysia.

I couldn’t stop myself from admiring, even though it’s not my first time – either Genting Dream Cruise is too good-looking, or maybe I just missed her.

Same procedure, checking-in, clearing the immigration and custom, and lastly getting on board!

I won’t really go into details this time, cause I’ve written about it on my last post.

It’ll be more about my experience and things that I had not experience before, let’s get started!

Privacy at The Palace Suite

One thing that I noticed being in a large cruise ship was, obviously, in contact with a bee-swarm of other passengers who would likely use the facilities provided.

It can be quite overwhelming for those who prefer to enjoy the cruise peacefully.

Elevate your cruising experience by staying in The Palace – part boutique hotel, part private clubhouse – meticulously shaped to ensure absolute comfort.

Indulge in between these four different types of room or suite in The Palace: Palace Suite, Palace Deluxe Suite, Palace Penthouse, and Palace Villa .

palace suite genting dream cruise

An additional benefit for staying at The Palace is the exclusive facilities, privately accessible only for The Palace’s guests including the swimming pool, jacuzzi, gym, even dining area.

On the second day on Genting Dream Cruise, we had a chance to explore the swimming pool area, no one was there.

It might be too early for people to swim at that time but it’s  a good timing for us to hit every corner and get the best angle to capture nice picture.

If only I had the whole day just relaxing, putting all the itineraries prepared for us on the side, I probably could spend the rest of the day swimming and sun-bathing here on this deck.

There are two jacuzzis just right in the front facing the ocean.

The sun, blue sky, ocean, and fancy cruise, couldn’t ask for a better way to enjoy life!

chilling genting dream

Dine, Spa, and Entertainment in Genting Dream Cruise

One thing I worried the most, and I knew it would be hard for me to handle while I was with Genting Dream Cruise.

Guess what? It’s to hold the temptation to eat all the food served at the restaurants.

Every time I stepped into a restaurant, I needed to remind myself to control my eating, or else all the diet and workouts that I had done would be useless.

You all know what happened next, don’t you? Screw the diet, I’m on holiday!

The sound of clattering spatula hitting the iron plate table jumbled with the sizzling sound of the ingredients.

Occasionally, a gleeful voice shouting in a high pitch jacked up the chaos inside the room, a good chaos.

Umi Uma Restaurant was filled with happiness, laughter, and admiration thanks to the Kungfu Chef.

Here in Uma Umi Restaurant, the food that you order will be made on spot by the chef.

On top of that, with a good sense of humor, the chef entertains everyone as a starter before the food is served and enjoyed.

I ordered the Dream Ocean from the menu, the shrimp and scallop are the rock star, served with fried rice, miso soup, and refreshing salad.

I finished everything to the last bite.

That was my first sin, the second one was lunch at Bistro by Mark Best – which wasn’t so bad in a way – that the portion was still acceptable for my diet.

It’s a fine dining anyway, a small but punching food could take me literally to heaven, cause it’s so yum!

First, they brought us a basket of bread and a plate full of salami and prosciutto.

Next, for the appetizer, a bowl of thick cauliflower soup with a drop of caviar, all the flavor exploded in my mouth!

Then the main came, pan-seared cod  with a special creamy puree and to wrap everything up, a delicate green tea cake.

umi uma restaurant genting dream

Meanwhile, when we had a bit of free time, exploring the cruise on our own was the only thing to do, better than staying inside the room.

Deck 16 and 17 were the area in Genting Dream Cruise that we hung around the most.

It’s the open area and for sure, people would love to enjoy the sun and do outdoor activities.

Everything is free to use, from swimming pool, playground, flying fox, basketball court, and outdoor beach club.

playground genting dream experience

I did try a one-hour massage here in Crystal Life Spa .

The appearance of the furniture, decoration, and the choice of color was very nice, soft and relaxing.

Before entering the room, a form was given to me and I could choose which part of my body would get more attention later on, I chose neck and shoulder, my favorite area.

The full body massage began from my back, down to my legs, and ended up with a massage in my head.

It was good, the masseuse was attentive and questioned if the strength was good enough.

I fell asleep not long before the massage finished.

Crystal spa genting dream

In my previous trip with Genting Dream Cruise, I didn’t get the chance to watch China Got Talent .

That’s why I was very excited to see the show.

It felt like we’re the audience and the judges were projected on big screen, giving comments to the performers. Some acts were thrilling, some were creative.

It goes without saying, all these performers show their best talent to entertain everyone on board.

Go watch them yourself, I don’t wanna be a spoiler!

chinese got talent performer

Sadly, everything has come to an end. Three days were too quick.

I definitely wanna check other routes by Genting Dream Cruise, maybe to Japan, or Thailand.

Or maybe it’s sister cruise, World Dream Cruise, will see!

Why The Woodward Dream Cruise Is Such A Gearhead Paradise

  • By Steve Balistreri
  • August 20, 2024

Dream Cruise Ts

Well I’m sweaty, sunburnt, and smell like a mix of tire smoke and unburnt fuel. That means it was another successful Dream Cruise. The Dream Cruise is my favorite day of the year — better than my birthday, Christmas, Halloween, and National Spaghetti Day combined. It’s the largest one day automotive gathering on the planet, and in my opinion, the best car show in the world. It’s a celebration of everything with wheels, with over 1.5 million attendees, and well over 40,000 cars stretching 16 miles along historic Woodward Avenue. Every gearhead should have the Dream Cruise on their bucket list. Here’s why:

The History

The Dream Cruise started almost 30 years ago in Ferndale, a neighborhood on Detroit’s northern border. A local handyman named Nelson House organized a one-time fundraising event for a local soccer field. He called it the “Woodward Dream Cruise Car Show” to relive the heyday of 60’s and 70’s Detroit iron battling it out on Woodward Avenue.

Vidframe Min Top

He expected several thousand people to attend, but over 250,000 showed up. The show went viral back in 1995 before that was really a thing. Since then it’s been happening pretty much organically the third Saturday every August. The people loved the Dream Cruise and kept showing up to make it happen, which is beautiful in my eyes. At the Dream Cruise, the attendees and their cars are the stars of the show.

7a8c8565 06a3 4c17 A97f 408a07cb1f42

There is a non-profit run by uncompensated members of the community who handle things like coordination, merchandise, sponsorships, and charitable donations, but the actual cruise just… happens. This is one reason why it’s so great.

The Variety of Cars is on Another Level

I was trying to think of a way to describe the Woodward Dream Cruise without sounding like Bubba Gump going on for hours about all the ways you can cook shrimp; but I can’t. Picture your favorite car, odds are it will be there. Picture some odd or obscure car you forgot about or didn’t know existed, hard I know, but that will be there too. Think of any brand, foreign, domestic, sold in the US or not; there will be cars rolling around from every era of that brand’s history.

Being at the Dream Cruise is like an ADHD simulator. Look one way and you’ll see a mint BMW 2002 turbo, look the other way and there’s an original 67’ Mustang GT500, look again and you’ll see a purple Lamborghini Diablo or a Citroen 2CV. There’s a clean 90’s Durango 5.7 with a huge inter cooler making a whistling noise, there’s a first gen Plymouth Horizon, theres a JDM Honda CRX, theres 30 Chrysler Crossfires all styled differently driving in a line, theres a Caterpillar yellow hot rod with tractor tires and a 16 liter turbocharged Detroit Diesel engine, theres Jay Leno in a turbine powered Chrysler. Any marginally famous movie car will have a tribute there. Theme cars, joke cars, things that can barely be described as a car, you’ll see it there.

[Ed Note: At my first Woodward dream cruise, which happened right around my 21st birthday, I accidentally walked 15 miles because I simply couldn’t stop. It was a sensory overload! -DT].

7d337e74 5857 4457 A039 D68c8db93ec8

You have go in expecting the unexpected, and prepare to have your mind blown constantly. The best part is you see and hear these cars in motion. It’s one thing to see a vintage Auburn or a 59’ Cadillac Eldorado under lights in a museum. It’s a totally different thing to see it gliding down the road in the sunlight, like they did when they were new. You can feel the uneven thumps in your chest when some high strung gasser lopes down the street before violently breaking its tires, hear the howl of a Ferrari Testarossa, or the quiet put-putting of a Scout Scarab as it floats down the road like some kind of alien craft; all on the same day. Car clubs meet up and cruise together, so you’ll suddenly see dozens of Vipers or rally cars and whatnot taking up a chunk of traffic. It’s a real-life parade of automotive greatest hits that you can’t find anywhere else.

The reason for the variety is that it’s all open to everyone, and the people of Detroit have deep roots in the car world. Woodward Avenue is just a 45mph, 4-lane highway that stretches northwest from Detroit to Pontiac. If you want to bring your car, just go; there is no gatekeeper. You’ll see any type of vehicle and all sorts of crazy projects, some finished, some not. This openness is what makes it great. You don’t need a traditionally “cool” car or something that’s finished to concourse quality. Maybe you painted your Camaro with a roller, or your car is covered in pennies or Hello Kitty stickers. Your can bring it anyways and you’ll find someone there who appreciates it.

People are struggling these days and prices for everything keep going up. The Detroit Electronic Music Festival used to be free, now it’s almost $300. It costs a family of five $126 to go to the Detroit Zoo, and that’s before you spend $15 on a hamburger and $9 for a peanut butter sandwich and fries for your kid. At the Dream Cruise you just show up. You can walk around, sit on the grass or some bleachers, or set up a canopy with a grill and some lawn chairs. The major auto manufacturers have areas with bands and other entertainment. You can find free food too. I walked with my kid to Pasteiners Auto Zone  where we got free hot dogs, chips, and a drink. Where else can you get this much entertainment for your whole family for free? That brings me to my next point.

It’s Family Friendly

We all know “kids are the future,” doubly so for the survival of car culture. You will be heartened by all the enthusiasm kids show for this rolling parade of cars. Drivers will show off for crowds of young’uns; an Impala may deploy its hydraulics hitting some three wheel motion, or do a burnout. You see plenty of kids holding signs egging people on to spin their tires. It’s a great feeling watching a child point and take a picture of your car, then call you a wimp for not doing a burnout. The Dream Cruise will have you thinking the kids are alright.

9a8628ab Aac8 4d71 Afb7 A88d4844c6eb

It’s an event for all generations. You’ll see entire extended families tailgating and giving each other rides. Kids hanging out in lawn chairs in the back of their Dad’s pickup truck. My son’s been going since he was a nugget in my wife’s belly. We had a blast this year, and I plan on continuing the tradition as long as I can.

The People are Awesome

I know I said “the best part about Dream Cruise” several times now, but the people of the Dream Cruise are really the best part. It brings out the camaraderie and egalitarian spirit that are the best parts of car culture. Everyone is so friendly, appreciative, and approachable. “It’s a whole ass vibe” as the kids would say.

As you cruise up Woodward at a walking pace, surrounded by a smorgasbord of awesome cars, the crowd on the side of the road are cheering you on. The people in the cars are complimenting each other’s rides and giving props. You’ll hear folks swapping stories and asking each other questions. The haters all seem to stay home and people show each other plenty of love.

If you look at the traffic situation there objectively, miles of traffic crawling at a walking speed, you’d imagine anarchy as road rage spreads like a plague. The cruise is the opposite. Everyone is relaxed and enjoying themselves. People yield, let each other in, stop traffic to help people back in and out of parking spaces. When parking, random passersby will spot you and let you know how much room you have. If your car dies, you’ll have a small crowd helping push your car to safety. Last year I saw a guy’s vintage Corvette start on fire. About a dozen people ran to the car with their water bottles or popped their trunks to grab fire extinguishers and put it out. Everyone there knows how precious someone’s ride is to them, so they look out for each other.

66dbe903 75ce 4457 B382 09b54b581c74

There’s been a lot of discussion over the years about car culture being a bit of a sausage fest, weisswurst in particular. The Dream Cruise is quite the opposite. The crowd is super diverse in age, sex, race, income — whatever. This big slice of humanity all loves cars, which is an awesome sight to see. City folk will be laughing and swapping stories with country folk. You’ll see guy in a McLaren complimenting a factory worker’s Foxbody Mustang. Families of all colors and nationalities tailgating together and having a great time.

Detroit is a diverse city, and the Dream Cruise is one of the few events that reflects that. With the country divided in so many ways, it’s heartwarming to see us coming together, even if it’s just to geek out about cars.

It’s Still a Little Lawless

8bc5b5b3 84cd 4529 B015 A35620fd7ca6

Old timers will grumble about all the hijinks they were able to pull back in the day and how the cops ruined the Cruise. While they may have a point, there is still plenty of silliness going on. It’s over a million people with tens of thousands of cars on an open road, there aren’t enough cops in Michigan to ticket everyone. So there are tons of burnouts going on, a sure way to get cheers from the crowd. A good number of the cars aren’t street legal. You see full-blown race cars, cars that are just a bare chassis with an engine and a seat strapped in it, random motorized objects that are somehow being driven.

People ride in the back of pickup trucks, hang out of sunroofs, and cruise in the “way back” seats of their station wagon with the rear hatch open. Tons of scooters, dirt bikes, ATVs, unicycles, swerving through traffic. There are plenty of impromptu races going on (in a semi-safe manner), random doughnuts and other shenanigans. In the after-hours, Pontiac turns into a shit show, the streets painted with rubber lines in all directions. Serious racers head to the local Mexico to have more fun.

There are still a ton of people getting tickets, but to the cops’ credit they let a lot of stuff go in the spirit of the event. That or they’re outnumbered and can’t stop us all.

53ac1e85 5c73 45f2 958c 3d7e14f00a5d

Counterpoint

There are plenty of Dream Cruise haters out there. One group doesn’t like the noise, or the crowds, or the congestion, or fun. The other group doesn’t like the cops or all the “normie” cars that clog up the road. People from the suburbs who don’t even go to the show complain that it’s not in Detroit proper; they probably just don’t want the noise in their neighborhood. Traffic can get really slow, which can be frustrating if you have somewhere to go and you forgot about every other road in the region, or if your cooling system isn’t up to snuff. There may be some valid points in there somewhere, but the haters need to relax: This is the Motor City’s day to have fun.

If you’ve never been to the Woodward Dream Cruise, I hope this convinces you to go. It’s a celebration of all facets of car culture. Bring some sunscreen and lawn chairs and call up some friends in the area. Or if you don’t have any friends to join you, the Dream Cruise is the easiest day to make some new ones. I’ve been going every year since i moved to Detroit, and intend to keep that streak going as long as I can.

Anyways, here are some more photos!

Steve Balistreri

That Guy with the Sunbird

That’s my friend Spencer’s Grand Am! He just got it. I’m staying with him and attending Radwood Detroit with him in mid-September with my 1990 Pontiac Sunbird. The 7-hour drive there in a 96-horsepower J-Body with no cruise control will be interesting to say the least.

Freelivin2713

This is so awesome! Everything looks so good but I’m drooling over the AMC Eagle- my brother used to have 2 of them

MikuhlBrian

Yes, the ELR has always looked really nice. It was just too expensive for what it was, when it was new.

TheDrunkenWrench

This is on my bucket list of events to attend. For slow cruising, the land yacht will do perfectly.

Dan S

I love it – to me it’s one of the best things about living in Southeast Michigan.

This year we had just enough rain that the crowds were smaller and we had less gridlock.

Boulevard_Yachtsman

I have to try and make it to this sometime – I’m only about 10 hours away. The closest thing we have around these parts is the Heartland Nationals GoodGuys show at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. I think there were over 5,000 cars there this year. It’s almost overwhelming, and yet a far cry from the scene you’re describing at Woodward.

It’s also not free, and the mix of cars was decidedly only traditional Americana for awhile. Part of that was having a cut-off at 1964 way back in the early years. That was then moved to ’72 for awhile, and now I think it’s a rolling 20-some-year from present with anything-goes on the last day. I’ve heard a few purists gripe, but it was the right move to bring more young people into it. This year I parked “Biscuits and Gravy” (my slightly leaky ’66 6-cyl Biscayne) in between an early 90’s SL Benz and rickety old early 80’s Datsun truck that some kid was trying to fix up, neither of which would’ve been there a few years back. It was perfect.

Not sure the Biscayne is cut out for 20+ hours of driving, but from the looks of things my Moby-white ’94 Fleetwood with its fresh Vogues would blend right in!

Steve Balistreri

Your Fleetwood would be perfect!

Joel T

I went last year for the first time and met Jay Leno and got a picture with him. I went again this year, took my 84 year old uncle. We had a blast, cruised the whole route in my 21 Challenger SXT. Plan on doing it again next year.

Theotherotter

I went last year for the first time in years and had a great time, as expected. Even some my friends in Detroit, none of whom are car people, go every year. I enjoy most all of those qualities that the author describes, especially the variety of cars and the laid-back vibe. This year I missed it, so I’ll make sure to go again next year. But there’s something about it that leaves me thinking it’s missing…just a little bit of…I don’t know what? Maybe it’s so diffuse and I need something more concentrated to get 100% out of it. Maybe it’s all the normie cars. I remember my last visit to Stockholm, about ten years ago, I was out at Mikkeller and happened to be facing out a window and kept noticing American cars periodically driving by for over an hour. When I was done I walked in the direction they were going and discovered Cruising Sveavegen, which is like a (only relatively) smaller Swedish WDC every Saturday night all summer. I was ecstatic and spent the rest of the evening sketching and looking at cars. It’s a standout memory. I think it’s something of that that’s missing for me.

Gene1969

This is the content I was looking for. I was lucky enough to drive in the first one. Another way to look at the Dream Cruise is that it is a 15 mile long car show. There are so many stories to tell. We need to hear more.

Car Guy - RHM

I participated from the first year thru 2012., but was in town this last week so was able to hit it up for a while. Ferndale had Mustang alley, you’d think just about every Mustang in the greater Detroit area was there. There is quite variety of cars, even seen that group of Crossfires. Could do without the groups with the political signs.

MP81

We were starting to wonder on the Detroit Discord if we’d see an article about the Cruise, and now we need not wonder any longer. Thank you for the excellent article!

Been to every single one thus far – and the week leading up to it is a blast (it’s long, but worth it). Any Friday or Saturday from basically May (or earlier, if it’s randomly warm) to October is a fun night out there to hang out and watch the cars.

Pupmeow

This was a great article.

Detroit car culture is just different. More homegrown and less judgy/showy than some other places, in my experience. Long live Detroit!

Operatoring

This describes it perfectly! If you think you’ve seen it all from an automotive standpoint, just go the The Dream Cruise. It does not disappoint.

Cloud Shouter

Thank you! I’ve been waiting for this.

TOSSABL

Ok, the picture of a McLaren next to a Cadillac kinda sealed the deal: I do want to attend now. I’m all for an event that e’rebody just shows up for driving whatever they have. I’ll be over talkin to that guy still driving his Pacer after all these years.

S13 Sedan

The variety is what makes it worthwhile. I felt it was more diverse than ever this year, especially with the types of cars that the car weirdos like us would like. I have a pic of a Reliant wagon that looks like it literally just drove off of the dealer lot next to a 2CV.

I like variety in cars & a wide diversity in crowds. Families, kids & dogs running around, several languages spoken, unfamiliar-but fascinating smells from food-all make for a good event.

M. Park Hunter

This is every bit as awesome as the author describes. I went waaayyy back circa 1996-97 with the “world’s ugliest car,” my daily’d 4-door 1962 Dodge Dart in sparkling metal flake poop brown. I ended up parked next to Phil Freakin’ Hill and his Model T Ford. He very politely asked to use the hood of my Dart to sign autographs all day. What an amazing gentleman.

http://itisgood.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/62-Dart-Woodward-Phil-Hill.jpg

LTDScott

Definitely on my list of things to do, and frankly I’m surprised there is so much diverse import representation there, which makes me want to go even more. I’m not usually a fan of shows that are all just one type of vehicle.

JaredTheGeek

I have always wanted to go the Woodward Dream Cruise. I grew up with Monterey Car Week in my backyard but it’s different. We used to have a more classic muscle event but covid killed it unfortunately. There is something about going to Detroit for the cruise.

Find Your Genting Dream and Resorts World One Cabin Types

A luxurious stay at Resorts World Cruises room

Are you excited about booking your upcoming cruise on Genting Dream or Resorts World One but struggling to decide which cabin type would be the perfect fit for you? Choosing the ideal cabin for your cruise vacation can be an overwhelming task with the plethora of options available.

Our detailed guide provides all the necessary facts and information to help you navigate the numerous cabin types and find the one that best suits your taste and expectations.

Both Genting Dream and Resorts World One boast the same impressive selection of cabin types. Lastly, when choosing a cruise cabin, wheelchair accessibility is crucial for those who need it. Not all ships have such cabins, so check in advance, as it's primarily available upon request. For Genting Dream, wheelchair-accessible rooms are available in the Interior Stateroom, Oceanview Stateroom, Balcony Stateroom, and Palace Suite. What will the Woodward Dream Cruise of the future look like?

A ug. 16—As electric motors replace gas-powered engines on vehicles, what will the Woodward Dream Cruise look like in 20 to 30 years?

Car experts believe one thing will remain the same: The more rare a vehicle is, the more it will turn heads on Woodward Avenue.

With few exceptions, 2023 is the last year that Stellantis will manufacture and sell gas-powered Dodge Challengers and Chargers.

Eric Stafford, senior editor of Car & Driver magazine, predicts those muscle cars will be ones to watch in as little as five to 10 years.

What else will be a classic?

Car enthusiasts love driving manual transmissions, but they're hard to find on newer models. Anything with that feature will be popular at the cruise of the future, he said.

Similarly, many automakers are phasing out production of V8 engines in favor of smaller, more fuel-efficient ones. So, any vehicle with a V8 will be sought after as well, Stafford said.

What about the dream cruise itself? Will it become a thing of the past?

Experts say no.

"It's still going to be a thing. People will always love their cars," said Matt Anderson, curator of transportation at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, which operates Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village.

"As long as there are teenagers, there will be a Dream Cruise," he said, noting that older car enthusiasts often buy the vehicles they couldn't afford as teenagers.

"They'll feel like they're a teenager again" when they get to drive that car, he said.

In the future, the event will feature fewer cars from the 1950s, '60s and '70s and more models from the '90s and 2000s, Anderson said.

The impending changes in the auto industry come with worry for some that the fun of driving will be gone.

Not so, experts say.

"I can hear the grumbling already" about the transition to electric vehicles, said Jerry Cuper, a classic car enthusiast and adjunct faculty member in engineering technology at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield.

"But they are fast as hell," he said.

Cuper has taught at LTU for 46 years; most of his students work in the auto industry after graduation, where they are the "problem solvers" of vehicle production, he said.

A complete changeover to EVs is not imminent, he said, as there are still bugs to work out, especially when it comes to charging stations.

There will always be gas-powered vehicles, experts say.

"I think all those cars from the 1960s and 1970s that were fun to drive, they're not going away," Stafford said.

Experts agree that car enthusiasts are going to miss the throaty sounds that gas-powered muscle cars make, letting everyone know of their presence. But the auto industry has taken care of that, Stafford said.

The new electric Dodge Charger has features added that mimic the noise of a gas-powered model to enhance the driver's experience. Manufacturers are even making some electric models that create external noise so the people on the street can hear it.

Cars of the future could bring another change that isn't as easy to overcome, experts say.

Many enthusiasts derive great pleasure from working on their own vehicles. As they become more advanced, it will be more difficult for a lay person to refurbish, repair and maintain them, experts say.

The car of the future will be more like a computer, said Terry Connolly, chairman of the board at the new Pontiac Transportation Museum and a former General Motors engineer.

"It's a little harder to love your computer," he said.

What to Expect on a Cruise to Nowhere — Dream Cruises’ World Dream Review

dream cruise one way

Update: Dream Cruises’ World Dream has ceased operations since 2 March 2022.

With travel out of the books, we’ve been on the lookout for other meaningful ways to take a good well-deserved break.

Dream Cruises World Dream Ship on Ocean - Cruise to nowhere

In Nov 2020, Singapore began cruises to nowhere . It’s not very different from regular cruises except this time, there aren’t any ports of call. You leave Singapore’s shores and return without stepping foot in other countries.

We had the pleasure of sailing on the World Dream — the newest ship of the Dream Cruises fleet just built in 2017!

View of Main Pool Deck from Palm Court - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

For those wondering if a cruise to nowhere is safe and worth it — we’ve sussed out the whole experience — from pre-boarding process and accommodation as well as things to do , food onboard , and safety precautions . Here’s our no holds barred experience of our three-night stay on the World Dream!

Pre-boarding Process for a Cruise to Nowhere

Marina Bay Cruise Centre

Thanks to COVID-19, there are a few extra steps to take before getting on the cruise:

1) Check-in online before your cruise (up to 90 days before departure) — upload a scanned copy of your passport or NRIC. 2) On the day of departure, guests will have to check in via SafeEntry, undergo temperature screening and fill in a health declaration form. 3) All guests will have to take a COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test (ART) at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre (level 3). Check your pre-assigned timeslot for the test, printed on the ticket. 4) After receiving a negative ART result, check-in your baggage.

*Pro-tip: Pack light and skip the baggage check-in to save time.

TRACEY Pod for Contact Tracing

5) Collect your key card and TRACEY — for contact tracing. These must be with you at all times on the ship. 6) Lastly, immigration. The automatic lanes now use facial recognition, so you don’t have to scan your thumb.

Despite the extra steps, the entire check-in process was actually very smooth and only took about 45 minutes in total. If you check the World Dream FAQ page, it states that waiting time for the swab results can take up to an hour — ours only took 20 minutes.

Note that the ART is slightly different from the PCR test — it’s a lot less intrusive and painless!

Accommodation on board Dream Cruises’ World Dream

Balcony deluxe stateroom.

Balcony Deluxe Stateroom - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

Our room for the next three nights!

Our Balcony Deluxe Stateroom had a comfy queen-size bed, large sofa, flat-screen TV and a private balcony. This was my virgin cruise experience and I was pretty impressed with the size of the room.

Balcony Deluxe Stateroom Bathroom - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The bathroom was really spacious too, with a dual-tap sink and rain shower with seriously good water pressure — no complaints so far!

Balcony Deluxe Stateroom Balcony View - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

It was surprisingly comfortable, but the best part is looking out on the balcony and realising you’re no longer on land — ah, that ever-changing sea view.

Sunrise view from Balcony - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

A gorgeous sunrise view from our balcony on the first morning

*Pro-tip: If your room isn’t facing the east side, head to Zouk Beach Club at the back of the ship for an uninterrupted sunrise view.

Cost: From ~S$300/pax for two nights

The Palace Privilege - Dream Cruise Palace

While the Balcony staterooms are cosy, we got to visit The Palace — it’s basically the Sentosa Cove of the ship!

Staying here gives you access to exclusive restaurants and programmes, 24-hour butler service, and priority access to shows. The Palace also has its own facilities that non-Palace guests can’t access, like a separate pool and gym — talk about living that bougie life for three nights!

Palace Suite

Palace Suite Dream Cruise Accommodation - Dream Cruise Palace

Palace Suites include a queen bed, sofa bed and a luxury bathroom with a bathtub. You can also look forward to a complimentary mini-bar and Nespresso coffee machine.

The best part is the balcony — it’s twice the size of the one in the Balcony Deluxe Room!

Cost: From ~S$660/pax for two nights

Palace Villa

The Palace Palace Villa Living Room - Cruise to Nowhere

We also got to tour the best suite onboard — the Palace Villa. It has two bedrooms, a dining room, living room and three bathrooms.

Palace Villa Master Bathroom - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The Palace Villa’s master bathroom. Just wow.

There’s plenty of outdoor space too, like a private sun deck, jacuzzi and sauna. At the front of the ship, no less!

Free Things to Do on a Cruise to Nowhere

Thrilling activities.

Waterslide Park

Waterslide Park - Things to do a Cruise to Nowhere

The Waterslide Park has five thrilling slides — three looping slides and two steep drops! The loop slides are a lot of fun, with clear segments for sneaky views of the ocean. Just a fair warning that the drops are not for the faint-hearted!

Workout and Dance Classes

Muay Thai Class - Things to do a Cruise to Nowhere

Some of the most underrated cruise activities are the free fitness and dance classes! There are at least two classes daily.

Ballroom Dancing - Things to do a Cruise to Nowhere

Ballroom dancing taught by Gabriele from Italy and Laura from Spain!

Being the fomo / kiasu travellers, we attended four in total — Muay Thai, HIIT, Ballroom Dance and Bellydance. These ended up being one of the highlights of our cruise! It was a great experience being taught by instructors from all over the world.

My favourites were the dance classes. As someone with no dance background and limited grace, they were a lot more fun than expected. The instructors were friendly and patient, and the moves weren’t too hard to pick up — I’m ready to start my own dance crew now 😎

Sunset HIIT with Natalie Yeo - Cruise to Nowhere Genting World Dream

Post-HIIT with personal trainer Natalie Yeo .

Classes are limited to 15 – 20pax on a first-come-first-serve basis, but the ones we attended were less than half-filled. What a waste! But now that you can’t leave the ship, it’s the best time to try all these fun classes. Classes can be found on the Dream Daily — a daily newsletter you get at the start of each day.

Ropes Course and Zipline

Zipline - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The rooftop Ropes Course is a good source of adrenaline — navigate through different obstacles and end off by ziplining over the ocean!

Sportsplex Rooftop Basketball Court - Things to do on the Genting World Dream

There’s even a full-sized basketball court to shoot some hoops! This space is also occasionally used for fun activities like a reverse bungee run. Reserve your slot at Deck 18, at the Ropes Course area.

Rock Climbing Wall

Rock Climbing Wall - Things to do on the Genting World Dream

Scale new heights at the rock wall on Deck 18! The course isn’t too difficult so it’s perfect for kids and beginners.

Crystal Life Fitness

Crystal Life Fitness Gym - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

Squeeze in a quick workout at the well-equipped Crystal Life Fitness gym. There are several treadmills, gym machines, and a weight-training area to help you work up a sweat.

Plus the view provides extra motivation to work harder! Book a slot in person at the counter on Deck 15.

Chill Activities

Main Pool Deck

Main pool deck - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

At the heart of all the action lies the main pool deck, with four relaxing jacuzzis.

Currently, the pool is limited to 26pax, while the jacuzzi is limited to two guests each for hourly timeslots. You’ll have to reserve a slot at the pool reception desk.

Mini Golf - Things to do on the Genting World Dream

Enjoy a chill game of mini golf with your friends on Deck 17 — no bookings required!

Cinema at Sea

Zouk Beach Club Movie Screening - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

Zouk Beach Club is now used as an outdoor movie theatre!

There’s a broad selection of films playing throughout the day around the cruise. On our sailing, there was Jumanji: The Next Level at the outdoor Zouk Beach Club, Spiderman: Far From Home at the Zodiac Theatre, and Bad Boys for Life at The Lobby. There are about six films playing each day.

Esc EXPERIENCE LAB

Esc EXPERIENCE LAB Virtuix Omni Dream Cruise Activities - Cruise to Nowhere

Virtuix Omni.

For some virtual reality fun, check out Esc EXPERIENCE LAB . On World Dream, there are eight exciting games — from full-motion rollercoasters to Formula 1 racing simulators.

Our top pick is the Virtuix Omni, a multi-directional simulator with free range of motion, allowing you to chase down (or run from) zombies.

Esc EXPERIENCE LAB Icaros Flying Simulator - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The Icaros Flying Simulator is a close second — you’re essentially a drone hunting enemy drones.

Esc EXPERIENCE LAB eSports Arena - Dream Cruises' World Dream

The Esc EXPERIENCE LAB includes an eSports Arena which hosts daily tournaments for popular games like Street Fighter and Tekken 7 . When there aren’t tournaments, you can book the space and enjoy games like Mario Kart on the big screen!

Cost: S$4 – S$20 per game

*Pro-tip: Look out for special game promotions on the Dream Daily like S$40 for 30 minutes of unlimited gameplay!

Guest playing at the Arcade - Dream Cruises' Dream

There’s a small arcade onboard — a whole separate venue from the Esc EXPERIENCE LAB.

Cost: ~S$3/game

Crystal Life Spa

Crystal Life Spa - Dream Cruises' World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The Crystal Life Spa is the place to go for a full on pampering session. You could get a full-body massage, detox facial, or makeover. We opted for a spa access pass (S$20/pax) to enjoy the sauna, steam room and vitality pools (both hot and cold!).

Cost: From S$20

Food — Where and what to eat on a cruise to nowhere

Free restaurants (no top-up required).

The Lido - Things to do a Cruise to Nowhere

The Lido is the free buffet spread you’d expect on a cruise. Here, there are rows of international cuisine like Indian curry, laksa , pizza, and a mountain of desserts — all in one place.

The Lido Breakfast - Things to eat on the Genting World Dream

Breakfast for four! We might have gone slightly overboard.

The Lido Buffet Queue - Things to do on the World Dream

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, you won’t be able to help yourself to the food. On the plus side, the friendly servers are very generous with the portions. There’s also a 24-hour snack bar right outside, perfect for midnight munchies.

Dream Dining Room Lower

Dream Dining Room Lower - Cruise to Nowhere Review Genting World Dream

For Western fare, check out Dream Dining Room Lower for a tasty three-course meal!

Main course options for lunch include Sauteed Black Pepper Beef, Fish and Chips, and Fusilli Pasta. The menu varies a lot, so don’t worry about having the same meal twice.

Dream Dining Room Lower Group Picture - Cruise to Nowhere Review Genting World Dream

Dream Dining Room Upper

Lunch at Dream Dining Upper - Things to eat on the World Dream

Dreaming Dining Room Upper serves zi char -style Chinese cuisine. On the menu for the day: Sweet and sour pork, Chinese cabbage, pork ribs, and bitter gourd soup.

The dinner menu that day looked really appetising — assam pedas seasonal fish and wok-fried frog legs!

*Pro-tip: Opt for lunch here as it gets pretty packed during dinner.

Specialty Restaurants (top-up required)

There are over 20 specialty restaurants and bars on the World Dream. The prices are comparable to Singapore restaurant prices, but with an 18% service charge.

For the experience, we’d recommend setting aside at least one meal at a specialty restaurant.

Umi Uma Teppanyaki Chef Cooking - Things to eat on the Genting World Dream

For us, we tried Umi Uma, a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, where set meals start from S$58.

I’ve had teppanyaki before, but nothing like this. Our chef was a man of many talents. He taught us how to juggle an egg with a spatula and let us (attempt to) catch food with our mouths. Talk about dinner and a show!

Umi Uma Teppanyaki - Cruise to Nowhere Review Genting World Dream

The food itself was great. I enjoyed a juicy filet mignon steak, with salad, fried rice and stir-fried veggies on the side. For dessert, I opted for green tea ice cream with a matcha cake. Yum!

Themed Events on the World Dream

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for a Cruise to Nowhere

World Dream Cruise Palace Penthouse - Royal Carribean Vs World Dream

1) Do I need to be fully vaccinated to go on a Cruise to Nowhere?

As of now, guests don’t need to be vaccinated. However, you do need to be fully vaccinated to dine-in on board — the same as the current guidelines.

Take note that from 21 Nov 2021, all World Dream sailings will require its guests to be fully vaccinated, excluding children aged 12 and below. Guests must complete their vaccination at least 14 days before the cruising date to be eligible for the cruise.

2) Do I have to take a COVID-19 test?

Yes, as an added safety precaution, all guests have to take the COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test (ART) before boarding. The cost of the ART will be waived for new World Dream bookings for cruises departing from 20 Jan 2021 – 1 Apr 2022.

3) What are the safety precautions on board?

Contact tracing: Every guest is given a key card and TRACEY pod which has to be on you at all times. Your key card is required for tap in everywhere you go — restaurants, shops, shows etc. It’s like the ship’s version of SafeEntry.

Your temperature is also taken before entering potentially crowded areas, like theatres or restaurants.

VERRY CHRISTMAS Dance Performance - Things to do on the World Dream

Reduced capacity: In general, the ship is limited to a capacity of 50%, or 1,700 passengers — which is great for guests because other than mealtimes, we didn’t feel it was crowded at all. Most activities like waterslides and virtual reality games didn’t require waiting in queues!

This also applies to shows, restaurants and activities. The Zodiac Theatre, for example, currently allows 250 people, just 25% of its usual capacity. Don’t worry about missing shows, there are multiple timings to ensure all guests have a chance to catch them.

Hand sanitiser: These stations can be found all over the ship, as well as safe distancing markers on the floor reminding guests to practise social distancing.

4) Are reservations required for activities and shows?

Shows and classes are on a first-come-first-serve basis. But places like the spa, swimming pool, jacuzzis, SportsPlex and gym require reservations.

5) Where can I get the detailed schedule?

Guest looking at display screen - Cruise to Nowhere Review Genting World Dream

You can check the crowd level at each restaurant!

The detailed schedule is only accessible once onboard the World Dream, via a daily newsletter called the Dream Daily. You can find it on the Dream Cruises app , physical copies delivered to your room, and on the many screens around the ship.

Dream Cruises App - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The Dream Cruises app

The Dream Cruises app allows you to book WiFi packages, view Dream Dining’s menu for the day, as well as the day’s highlights. Download the app before boarding!

The Dream Daily gets released at around 7PM – 11PM daily, so you’ll know what’s on the agenda for the next day.

6) WiFi on board?

WiFi packages are available via the Dream Daily app from S$9 per day. The WiFi speed was fast and reliable, I only experienced a short 10-minute disconnection during the entire cruise.

7) How do I pay for additional activities and specialty restaurants?

All payments will be charged to your room card. Payments must be settled on the World Dream app before you disembark.

8) Are the restaurants on board Halal-certified?

The World Dream is Asia Pacific’s first Halal-friendly cruise ship! Both The Lido and in-room dining services are halal-certified. Halal options are also available at Dream Dining Room Lower upon request.

9) What other facilities are there for Muslim guests?

The World Dream offers a dedicated prayer room. Prayer gowns and mats will also be provided upon request.

10) Does the ship dock anywhere? Where will we be sailing to?

No, it is a cruise to nowhere , after all. The World Dream sails along the Straits of Malacca, where the waters are calmer.

Is a Cruise to Nowhere Worth It?

View from the Room - Passenger on a Cruise to Nowhere

The most important question of all — Yes!

If you’re willing to pay ~S$200/night for a staycation in Singapore (excluding food and activities), a cruise to nowhere is way more satisfying.

From ~ S$259/pax , you get a two-night stay with a sea view and your meals are free. Not forgetting free access to amenities like the pool, gym, waterslide park, ropes course, as well as top-tier shows and fun classes. Just the free stuff alone is enough to keep you occupied!

World Dream Ship on Ocean - Cruise to nowhere

While some look forward to the various ports of call on pre-COVID cruises, a cruise to nowhere allows you to truly explore and enjoy the ship’s facilities. Plus, you’ll have time to try the different classes and watch all the shows!

Esc EXPERIENCE LAB VR Maze - Things to do on the World Dream

Although we didn’t go anywhere, we still felt like we were on a holiday. Nothing like getting a text message asking you to activate your overseas data plan to get you in the vacation mood. 😂

Hi how fast the wifi? Standard package can open youtube/netflix & video call? Or need to opt for premium package? Is mobile data totally can’t be used on board?

Hi Mira! The Wifi was pretty good, and yes you can watch shows and you should be able to video call! If you use mobile data it’ll be data roaming as the ship sails to international waters.

How does the onboard wifi work? Do you have to log in to a landing page where you key in a user name and password like hotels, and can you hotspot it to your laptop or something? Thanks!

The Wifi is accessed through the Dream Cruises app. Once you’re on board (before you set sail), you’ll have to purchase the package through the app, using your own Wifi/Data in order to activate it. The app is only available on mobile thus we weren’t able to access wifi on our laptops.

Do ensure you’ve downloaded the app before boarding. Hope this helps!

hi, Kim after the cruise was there a need to be self- quarantine for a period of time?

Hi Jane! There wasn’t a need to self-quarantine after the cruise. The safe distancing measures on the ship were pretty extensive, from having to book timeslots for activities to alternate seats for movies and shows.

Thanks for this write up guys!!! Was still contemplating coz it’s still a cruise to nowhere but after reading y’all made me want to go! Awesome….. thanks

Glad you found it useful Sabrina! We had a lot of fun on our cruise — definitely a welcome break despite not actually going anywhere

after back from cruise & if fill up declaration form eg in a clinic, question on where “travel overseas”, is cruise to nowhere considered travelled overseas ?

Hi Shirley, nope it’s not!

Hi, Thank you for your reivew. It is really helpful for planning my trip. Can I check with you? Which deck did you choose during your trip? Can you choose or they choose for us? Any tips for that?

That’s great to hear! I don’t think you get to choose your deck. You select a room type and then get assigned a deck 🙂 Like how Balcony Staterooms are on decks 8-13 and 15! You can check which rooms are on each deck here: https://www.dreamcruiseline.com/world-dream-rooms

Do you have to book activities in advance ? If so, do you know how to book ?

Hi Jac! you can only book the activities using the Cruise App once you are onboard.

hi, is there a restaurant where they sell cakes? I’m going to the dream cruise on my b day

History of Tomsk Oblast

The development of this region began in the late 16th - early 17th centuries. The oldest settlement in the Tomsk region is the village of Narym, founded in 1596.

The town of Tomsk was founded as a military fortress by the decree of Tsar Boris Godunov in 1604. It was one of the outposts of the development of Siberia.

From 1708 to 1782, Tomsk was part of the Siberian province. In 1804, the town became the center of a separate Tomsk province, which included the current territories of the Altai krai, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, East Kazakhstan, Tomsk regions and part of Krasnoyarsk krai.

In the 19th century, the growth of gold mining, smelting of metals, fur trade concentrated large capital in Tomsk, triggering a revival of trade. Important transport routes - the Moscow and Irkutsk tracts - passed through Tomsk.

In 1888, the first university beyond the Urals was opened in Tomsk, in 1900 - the Technological Institute, in 1901 - the first commercial school in Siberia, in 1902 - the Teachers’ Institute. By 1914, Tomsk was one of the 20 largest cities in the Russian Empire.

In 1925, the Tomsk Governorate was abolished and became part of the Siberian region. In the 1930s, Tomsk lost its administrative significance. In August 1944, the city became again a regional center.

During the Second World War, dozens of factories, educational, scientific, and cultural institutions were evacuated to Tomsk oblast and became the basis for the further development of the region in the postwar years.

In the 1950s, the first in the USSR nuclear center of the world level was created in Tomsk Oblast - the Siberian Chemical Combine. In the 1960s-1970s, oil production began on the territory of the region, a giant petrochemical plant was built - the Tomsk Petrochemical Combine.

Tomsk Oblast - Features

The length of the Tomsk region from north to south is about 600 km, from west to east - 780 km. Most of the territory is difficult to access because of taiga forests occupying about 60% of the region and marshes (28.9%). The Vasyugan swamp is one of the largest marshes in the world.

The climatic conditions of the southern and northern districts of the Tomsk region are markedly different. Almost the entire territory of the region is located within the taiga zone. The climate is temperate continental. The average temperature in July is plus 24 degrees Celsius, in January - minus 16 degrees Celsius. The climate in the northern part of the region is more severe, winters are longer.

The largest cities and towns of Tomsk Oblast are Tomsk (570,800), Seversk (105,200), Strezhevoy (38,900), Asino (24,400), Kolpashevo (22,200). Lake Mirnoye located in Parabelsky district is the largest lake. The main river, the Ob, crosses the region diagonally from the southeast to the northwest, dividing it into two almost equal parts.

The main industries are oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, engineering, nuclear, electric power, timber industry, and food industry. All the machine-building and metal-working plants are located mainly in Tomsk and partly in Kolpashevo and Seversk. Oil is extracted mainly in the north-west and west of the region.

The main branches of agriculture are meat and dairy cattle breeding. Agricultural fields occupy about 5% of the territory. Wheat, flax and vegetables are grown in small amounts. Cattle-, pig-, sheep-, and goat-breeding are presented as well as poultry farming. Fur trade (squirrels, sables, musk-rats) and fur farming (silver-black fox) are also developed.

Tomsk Oblast - Natural Resources

Tomsk Oblast is rich in such natural resources as oil, natural gas, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, brown coal (the first place in Russia), peat (the second place in Russia), and groundwater. In the region there is the Bakcharskoe iron ore deposit, which is one of the largest in the world (about 57% of all iron ore in Russia).

Forests are one of the most significant assets of the region: about 20% (more than 26.7 million hectares) of forest resources in Western Siberia are located in Tomsk oblast. The timber reserves amount to 2.8 billion cubic meters.

In the Tomsk region there are 18.1 thousand rivers, streams and other watercourses with a total length of about 95 thousand km, including 1,620 rivers with a length of more than 10 km.

The main waterway is the Ob River. The Ob length in the region is 1,065 km. The main tributaries of the Ob flowing into it on the territory of the Tomsk region are the Tom, Chulym, Chaya, Ket, Parabel, Vasyugan, Tym.

Attractions of Tomsk Oblast

The sights of Tomsk Oblast include the harsh beauty of Siberian nature, the variety of winding rivers and canals, as well as monuments of wooden architecture, and other places that keep ancient legends about this land.

Undoubtedly, it is worth to visit Lake Kirek, one of the most beautiful reservoirs of the Tomsk region. It is located only 50 km from Tomsk. According to legend, a local millionaire drowned his diamonds here during the revolution in 1917.

About 40 km from Tomsk, there is a lake complex of the village of Samus consisting of seven lakes. These lakes are known for their very dark water, which is explained by the streams flowing into them from peat bogs.

Near the village of Kolarovo, located 33 km south of Tomsk, there is Siniy (Blue) cliff. It is a three-kilometer precipice descending to the Tom River. The cliff got its name due to the gray-blue shale that covers it. Several centuries ago, after the founding of Tomsk, a watchtower was installed on the cliff, from which signals were sent to the fortress.

At the source of the Berezovaya River, 40 km southeast of Tomsk, there is such an attraction as the Talovsky bowls, a natural monument of national importance. These are huge natural figures in the form of vessels of oval form, covered from the inside by birnessite - a rare mineral.

There is a tourist attraction of a global scale in the Tomsk region - the Vasyugan marshes, the largest marsh complex in the world. It is also called the “Russian Amazon”, because the Vasyugan marshes are not inferior to the famous South American river by their scale.

To the collection of sights of Alexandrovsky district of the Tomsk region, the most distant from the regional center, we can add Lake Baikal, the namesake of the famous lake, Goluboye (Blue) Lake, Malyye mountains (highlands) in the valley of the Vakh River and the Paninsky reserve, where the ancient burials of the Khanty and Ostyaks are preserved.

On the right bank of the Ob River, more than 200 km from Tomsk, the village of Mogochino is located. St. Nicholas Convent can be found here.

In Tomsk itself, plenty of monuments of wooden architecture deserve attention. In total, there are more than 700 objects, including 109 monuments of federal and regional significance.

Also in the Tomsk region you can visit more than 100 museums (most of them are located in Tomsk). The most popular museums are the Museum of History of Tomsk, the Memorial Museum “The NKVD Investigative Prison”, the Museum of Wooden Architecture, the Tomsk Regional Art Museum.
