Switchfoot to Tour With Blue October and Matt Nathanson in 2024

by Em Casalena April 10, 2024, 2:21 pm

How often do you get to see three headliners on tour? This year, Grammy-winning alt-rock band Switchfoot is kicking off a co-headlining tour with fellow rockers Blue October and Matt Nathanson for dates spanning the US from July to September. The Help From My Friends Tour will not feature any supporting acts (as of yet), which makes sense considering that there are three major bands headlining the tour.

Videos by American Songwriter

The Help From My Friends Tour will begin on July 24 in Charlotte, North Carolina at Skyla Credit Union Amphitheater. The 30-date trek will close on September 7 in Seattle, Washington at Marymoor Live.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Blue October (@blueoctoberband)

You can score tickets from any of the three bands’ websites. Ticketmaster is also hosting a ton of different presale events, including VIP packages and pre-show meet-and-greets.

General on-sale will start on April 12 at 10:00 am local. If your tour date of choice sells out, we recommend checking what Stubhub has available. It’s worth a shot, at least!

This is going to be one hell of a tour, so don’t miss your chance to see this trio of bands live. Get your tickets ASAP to see the Blue October, Matt Nathanson, and Switchfoot 2024 Tour before they sell out!

As an avid music fan, I have to confess of all the bands I love, I love Matt and his band the most. I'll travel pretty much anywhere to see him (and have) but seeing him on my own turf is always a treat. Being the 4th of July made it even more so. There is nothing quite like a HUGE crowd of people gathered together to experience live music and no other artist does such an amazing job of engaging them. Matt's nod to the holiday (my band is wearing red, white and blue...one wearing each color...uh, that doesn't really count Matt!) added his trademark humor to the occasion. As a free GA event at a fair, Matt introduced many new people to his music and his brand: a combination of fist pumping sing-alongs (Laid, Faster) to his more tender side (All We Are). Matt has a hidden gem in his band as well. The exuberance Aaron, Shiben and Chris show on stage is a gift to the audience.

Matt came out into the crowd for Headphones, saying he wished he could have made his way to the top of Art Hill. I was worried for a brief second that we were going to lose him moments later when he climbed on a scaffolding ladder and nearly lost his balance backwards. But that's what I love so much about Nathanson...he loves what he does and will do pretty much anything to make the crowd happy. What can I say? He's just the best.

Shortly after our arrival at Klipsch Music Center last night, we were relaxing in the Legends Club, when I noticed on the monitor Matt Nathanson's scrim backdrop, with his name on it....

I was familiar with Matt, and was pleasantly surprised to see him on this bill, though I was unaware until that moment.

We rushed out to our seats in the lawn, and what followed was one of the most enjoyable 30-45 minute sets I have ever seen. Not only is he extremely talented as both a singer, and a songwriter, but he put on a better show then the second opener, The Fray.

Shortly after his set ended, I went to look online and discovered that despite his having a forthcoming new album (his new song Gold in the Summertime is awesome) there were no announced tour dates other then his tour with Train and The Fray. I will be watching for some small venue dates from Matt, and will be going. Add him to one of my favorite live shows ever.

I've seen Matt Nathanson live 115 times. This may make me seem insane to most, but to those who have seen him live more than once will get it.

Matt is the best. As a musician, as a person, and most importantly as a performer.

I stumbled across Matt's music almost by accident nearing a decade ago, and it's been a beautiful whirl wind music love affair since. He writes the most captivating songs, and then executes them live in a way that makes you feel every word he's singing.

His shows almost double as a comedic show; the man has THE BEST sense of humor! I have left venues with my face hurting from laughing and smiling so much. The comedic banter between songs ties together and rounds out an all together perfect show.

You WILL come back for more.

Matt Nathanson, you own my concert loving heart.

I had high expectations for the Matt Nathanson show at the Greek Theatre and he did not disappoint! He hit many of his popular numbers, and engaged in humorous banter with the audience in between some of the songs. He's really got some sexy moves, too. When his shoe came untied, I yelled out for him to take it off, he heard me and acknowledged it! The Greek Theatre is one of the premier places to see a show in the San Fransisco Bay Area and seeing Matt, a San Francisco resident, perform there felt like home all around. It was nice to hear him appreciate being back where he belongs.

We had a great time at the Matt Nathanson concert. He was a very enertaining performer. There were a couple of young children in the audience and he made it a special and clean performance for them. Cleaned up the language used and made sure they received two of his guitar picks. He did most of the songs we love him for, only missing out on "Modern Love". He shared the venue with Gavin McGraw and that was a good combination. Although I would love to see just Matt so he could perform longer.

Every Matt Nathanson concert is an experience. He is the consummate performer. His music hits you in all the emotions, while his banter is unparalleled. He is sweet and funny as hell. The concert on Thursday was the last of the tour and also his birthday. He is definitely getting better with age...his voice is richer and he is sexier than ever. He usually plays in more intimate venues, and that is the perfect way to experience the wonder that is Matt Nathanson.

Matty Nay never disappoints, and he was in great form last night. He was riotously funny, as usual, and delivers his own hits (Modern Love, Faster, Come On Get Higher, Run, etc.) and a stellar bunch of covers (John Lennon, The Everly Brothers, bits of Queen, Guns n Roses and AC/DC). O.A.R. did a fine job rounding out the night, but couldn't compare.

Going to this concert was the absolute best thing ever! Matt was so funny! He made EVERYONE in the audience laugh throughout the whole performance! He also got the audience involved, by telling us what dance moves to do, how to clap to the song, which lyrics he wanted us to sing with him. I would go see him preform again in a heartbeat!

ivy_hartman14’s profile image

This was my third time seeing him and he just gets better every time. He is a stand up coming and musician who can move his hips. He ran out into the crowd and the fans loved it. My friend got to touch him!! Will definitely see him again.

Such a fun night. As always the combination of music and humor made for a fantastic show. Love his stories and banter with the fans. Awesome venue The Kessler and wishing I was still young enough to hit several of these shows along the tour.

The platinum-certified alternative quartet from Houston, TX—Justin Furstenfeld [vocals, guitar, songwriter], Jeremy Furstenfeld [drums], Ryan Delahoussaye [violin, mandolin, piano], Matt Noveskey [bass], and Steve Schiltz [guitar]—consistently evolves with every release. For their thirteenth studio album, tentatively titled Everything We Lost In The Fire , Blue October unlocks another creative masterpiece.

“The heaviest times of our lives is when we have to make difficult decisions. Change can be a beautiful part of life if you celebrate it. This is me celebrating change in the loudest way possible,“ states frontman Justin Furstenfeld.

After two years of nonstop recording and touring supporting Spinning The Truth Around Part I and Part II, you would think Justin and the band would want to take some time to themselves to rest and recharge. However, Furstenfeld immediately returned to his happy place in the studio where the creativity continued to flow and in a short period of time, a new album was born. Magic courses through the first single “Everything We Lost In The Fire,” a revealing story about having the courage to embrace change, spoken with big guitars and drums. This will be one of the heaviest sounding albums the band has ever released.

For the listener, there’s a real connection with the live experience that can only be created by a vast catalog. Blue October returns to the road in Winter/Spring 2024 on a 35 city headline tour in theaters across the country. Followed by a 32 city Summer amphitheater tour. There is no question Blue October’s best days are ahead.

Matt Nathanson Listen |  Watch

Over his almost 30 year career, Matt Nathanson has evolved into one of the most applauded songwriters and engaging performers on the music scene today. His sixth studio album, Some Mad Hope , yielded his breakthrough multi-platinum hit "Come on Get Higher.” He followed up with Modern Love , a critically acclaimed album ( PopMatters called it "the closest a pop album comes to perfection this year”) that garnered Nathanson two RIAA Gold Certified singles, “Faster” & “Run (featuring Sugarland)”.His 2013 release, Last of The Great Pretenders , debuted at #16 on the Billboard Top 200 while hitting #1 on iTunes' Alternative Albums chart. His most recent album, Sings His Sad Heart, spawned the hit single “Used To Be” which was a chart climber-hitting top 20 at Adult Top 40.Throughout his career, Nathanson has been known to cover songs and artists that inspire him. His Def Leppard approved cover album of their iconic Pyromania called Pyromattia shot to #1 on iTunes Alternative chart and Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott called the album “an amazing reinterpretation” with“heart & soul.” Last year he covered U2’s Achtung Baby as a tribute to his all time favorite album. His holiday LP Farewell December , includes "Blue Christmas” to “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer”—as well as his somber take on Joni Mitchell’s “River.”Nathanson has performed on The Howard SternShow, Ellen, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Dancing with the Stars, Rachael Ray, and The CMA Awards to name a few.

British Open 2024: Matt Fitzpatrick purposely hitting into the fescue sums up his disastrous Friday

When conditions are tough, Matt Fitzpatrick rises to the occasion. Or so the story goes. That was the case on Thursday at Royal Troon, where the Englishman opened with a one-under 70 that placed him firmly in the mix at the British Open.

RELATED:  Golf Twitter reacts to commentator's wild observation about Tiger Woods

It has been anything but the case on Friday, however. Fitzpatrick settled in with three straight pars on the gettable front nine. Two par 5s awaited on his next three holes, two prime opportunities to inch closer to the lead held by his playing partner Shane Lowry.

Instead, the former U.S. Open winner's week went up in smoke, as he made a bogey 6 at the par-5 fourth, a par at the fifth, and then a double-bogey 7 at the par-5 sixth. Things did not get any better at the seventh, where Fitzpatrick's tee shot found a fairway bunker, his ball coming to rest in a pot where it was nearly impossible to advance it forward.

After a few rehersals and a discussion with his caddie Billy Foster, Fitzpatrick realized his only option was to go out sideways, and not to the fairway. Fitzy had to purposely hit it into some knee-high fescue in what has to be one of the linksiest shots in links history:

The ultimate display of taking your medicine. This was his only option, as you'll see he had no stance to go out sideways into the fairway. Brutal break.

Fitzpatrick did well to make a bogey on this hole, which dropped him to four over for the day and three over for the tournament. Things have only gotten worse for the 29-year-old since, too. He made his second 7 of the day, this time a triple bogey, at the par-4 11th. On top of that, the 11th hole is where Lowry had a disaster of his own, going 20-plus minutes between shots after getting into a messy rules situation. Fitzpatrick is famously one of, if not the, fastest players on the PGA Tour. Can't imagine he's going to be a very happy camper walking off 18 on Friday.

Adding insult to injury for Fitzpatrick: When he played at Troon in the 2016 Open, he got the worst of the weather during Friday's second round, shooting an 80 after an opening-round 73 to miss the cut.

Keshi sings onstage in concert.

Houston, we have a pop star.

In 2019, Texas native Keshi ended his oncology nursing career to pursue music full time after signing with Island Records.

A mere five years later, the “UNDERSTAND” singer announced he’s launching his arena ‘Requiem World Tour’ to support his yet-to-be-released second album that shares a name with the tour.

That includes a stop at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Thursday, Oct. 10.

“It’s surreal in the sense that these are venues that people only dream about going to,” the 29-year-old told USA Today . “It’s the kind of thing where it feels like I can actually die happy, and if everything crashed and burned the next day after I played MSG, I’d be very OK. I’d be like, ‘Yeah, that was a great run. Everything was worth it.'”

If you want to see Keshi perform live in his dream venues, tickets are available for all shows as soon as today.

Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming North American ‘Requiem Tour’ shows on sites like Vivid Seats ; the official on-sale is Friday, July 26.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Keshi tour schedule 2024-25

A complete calendar including all U.S. and Canda tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Keshi set list

Although it’s likely Keshi will work tracks from his forthcoming record into his live shows, here’s a look at what he took to the stage at his last U.S. show back in April 2023 at Houston’s 713 Music Hall, courtesy of Set List FM .

01.) “blue” 02.) “GET IT” 03.) “less of you” 04.) “SOMEBODY” 05.) “beside you” 06.) “like i need u” 07.) “kiss me right” 08.) “TOUCH” 09.) “MILLI” 10.) “i swear i’ll never leave again” 11.) “drunk” 12.) “skeletons” 13.) “UNDERSTAND” 14.) “atlas” 15.) “B.Y.S.” 16.) “HELL/HEAVEN” 17.) “ANGOSTURA” 18.) “right here” 19.) “LIMBO” 20.) “ANGEL” 21.) “GABRIEL” 22.) “2 soon”

Keshi new music

Ahead of the release of “Requiem” — which is due out Sept. 13 — Keshi has dropped one single.

If you want to give the new song a spin, the emotional three-minute ballad “Say” can be found here .

Keshi special guests

On select dates, Keshi will be joined by different special guests.

To make sure you’re familiar with their sounds, you can find each artist’s most-streamed track on Spotify below:

A look at the biggest summer concerts swinging through the Inland Northwest in 2024

By Seth Sommerfeld

A look at the biggest summer concerts swinging through the Inland Northwest in 2024

T he calendar flipping to May means that summer is right around the corner. And for music fans, that means it's time to start putting together your own summer concert calendar. In case you haven't been keeping tabs on the shows that have been announced in recent months, we're here to help with an info dump overview of the local summer concert season.

The hub of the Spokane area's summer outdoor concert scene has become BECU Live at Northern Quest Resort & Casino, which Inlander readers have voted Best Live Music Venue in back-to-back years. And 2024 features the most robust lineup in Northern Quest history, with a whopping 24 concerts announced so far, mixing musical legends, modern superstars and a lot in between.

Classic rock lovers should come out in droves for Elvis Costello & the Imposters and Daryl Hall (June 4), Slash (July 6), Bachman-Turner Overdrive (July 24, 50 years after their Expo '74 gig), Sammy Hagar (Aug. 13), Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo (Aug. 16) and Steve Miller Band (Sept. 23).

Country fans get treated to Kane Brown (Aug. 15), Needtobreathe (May 12), Riley Green (May 16), Jordan Davis (June 22) and Midland (Aug. 24). Those looking for a hit of '90s nostalgia can check out Boyz II Men (May 15), Third Eye Blind (June 8), Bush (July 27) and The Smashing Pumpkins (Sept. 24).

More modern rock flair comes via the likes of Cage the Elephant (June 30), Falling in Reverse (Aug. 21), KALEO (Aug. 28), Five Finger Death Punch (Aug. 29), Ice Nine Kills and In This Moment (Aug. 30). There are even a few outliers like pop vocalist Donny Osmond (Aug. 11), Lindsey Stirling's electric violin genre-mashing (Aug. 31), the a cappella of Pentatonix (Sept. 11) and reggae funk from Michael Franti & Spearhead (Aug. 17).

S pokane Pavilion is also ready to rock this summer. Quite literally. Apart from the summer-opening concert by country singer Megan Moroney (July 12), everything else is various flavors of dudes rockin': Primus and Coheed and Cambria (July 20), The Decemberists (July 27), Ween (Aug. 4), John Fogerty (Aug. 16), and a triple co-headlining bill of Switchfoot, Blue October and Matt Nathanson (Sept. 6).

North Idaho's prized Festival at Sandpoint boasts one of its best lineups in years: Blues Traveler (July 25), Violent Femmes (July 26), Trombone Shorty and Big Boi (July 27), Maren Morris (July 31), Lee Brice (Aug. 1), Jason Mraz (Aug. 2), Colbie Caillat & Gavin DeGraw (Aug. 3) and a closing performance featuring the Sandpoint Orchestra playing along with How to Train Your Dragon (Aug. 4).

There's never a bad reason to take a roadtrip to visit the world-class gem that is the Gorge Amphitheater, but this year's slate at the Central Washington standby is top-tier. For the EDM fans things kick off with Illenium's Memorial Day Weekend residency (May 25-26), followed by the Beyond Wonderland festival (June 22-23), a three-night stand by Washington's own Odesza (July 4-6) and the Bass Canyon fest (Aug. 16-18).

The country crowd gets the annual Watershed Festival (Aug 2-4), plus Tyler Childers (Aug. 23). Folk-pop star Noah Kahan hopefully won't have a smokey repeat of his last PNW visit when he plays the Gorge on June 29. And then there's a vast array of rock sounds to get Gorge-goers on their feet: Red Hot Chili Peppers (May 31), Blink-182 (July 14), Neil Young & Crazy Horse (July 26), Outlaw Music Festival (Aug. 10), Dave Matthews Band (Aug. 30-Sept. 1), Hozier (Sept. 6), Glass Animals (Sept. 7), King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (Sept. 14) and Imagine Dragons (Sept. 28).

Seeing concerts at the Spokane County Interstate Fair comes with the bonus of fair admission being included with the ticket. For this year's grandstand concerts, they've lassoed country standouts Clay Walker (Sept. 10) and Ian Munsick (Sept. 11), plus hip-hop hitmaker Flo Rida (Sept. 12).

In terms of one-off outdoor shows, it's hard to top ONE Spokane Stadium's first concert: The Outlaw Music Festival brings Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and J ohn Mellencamp to town on Aug. 9.

The Spokane Symphony escapes the Fox for three outdoor gigs: swinging by Arbor Crest Wine Cellars on June 5, trekking out to Liberty Lake Pavillion Park on Aug. 31 and then wrapping up with the annual Labor Day concert at Comstock Park on Sept. 2.

Lest we forget, there's plenty of outdoor music (and food) served up at another end-of-summer Spokane staple: Pig Out in the Park returns Aug. 28-Sept. 2. And watch your favorite neighborhood venues, too: Cannonball in Coeur d'Alene Park in Browne's Addition; Pavillion Park in Liberty Lake; and Riverstone and Kendall Yards both have live music, as does Rocket Market and Brick West Brewing, to name a few.

A look at the biggest summer concerts swinging through the Inland Northwest in 2024

W hile folks are naturally drawn to outdoor concerts as the weather warms, there are still plenty of great indoor offerings in the area as well. The Knitting Factory has tons of diverse offerings including The Wallflowers (June 1), Shakey Graves (Aug. 10), country from Aaron Watson (July 27), Wheeler Walker Jr. (July 10) and Treaty Oak Revival (Aug. 15), hard rock like Northlane (June 23) and King Buzzo (Aug. 11), K.Flay's hip-hop (Aug. 19), indie rock from STRFKR (July 25), Built to Spill (Aug. 16), Alvvays (Aug. 21) and Alex G (Aug. 17) and emo via Taking Back Sunday (June 6).

The Knit's smaller companion venue The District Bar is no slouch either, featuring snarling fem rockers Thelma and the Sleaze (June 11) and GRLwood (June 13), folky Northwest acts like Margo Cilker (July 12) and Blitzen Trapper (July 13), Niger desert blues from Etran De L'Aïr (July 24) and much more.

In the realm of larger theaters, First Interstate Center for the Arts' lone summer concert (so far) brings Dwight Yoakam to the stage on July 19. The Fox Theater's calendar is also at one (for now) with Lyle Lovett and His Large Band (July 15) being the only non-covers act on the slate.

The Bing Crosby Theater has mainly become an outpost for cover bands, but there are a few original offerings including guitar wizard Buckethead (June 4), singer-songwriters Mat Kearney (June 17) and Judy Collins (July 23), and anime big band jazz via Cowboy Bebop LIVE (June 22).

For the all-ages indoor kids, The Big Dipper has its usually loaded slate of metal and hardcore shows — The Accüsed A.D. (June 8), The HIRS Collective (June 11), Cryptopsy (June 12), Artillery (June 17) — but also mixes in nerdy rap via MC Chris (Aug. 9), reggae from Nattali Rize (July 26) and even the puppet punk act Green Jellÿ (July 31).

The Chameleon hardly has its full summer show calendar fleshed out at this point, but concerts on the radar include Vampa's dark EDM (June 14), hip-hop from Myke Bogan (June 10), chill bro reggae via Kyle Smith (June 25) and album release shows for local acts like Jason Perry (May 31), Nothing Shameful (June 1) and Quarter Monkey (June 7).

Speaking of venues debuting their first summer slates, Spokane Tribe Casino's new Spokane Live space boasts an eclectic array of shows including Smash Mouth (June 8), Mötley Crüe's Vince Neil (July 15), WAR (July 19), Spin Doctors (July 27), the local Green Day cover aces of Not.Greenday (June 14), country from Larry Fleet (July 20) and Red Clay Strays (July 24) and more.

For those who want to start the summer with some Moscow moshing, Punk Palouse Fest gets rumbling over Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-25). And while the Spokane Arena is shuttering for the summer for renovations, University of Idaho's ICCU Arena will host its Summer Country Throwdown fest with headliners Clint Black and Yung Gravy on Aug. 23 and 24.

Regardless of what sonic waves you feel like riding this summer, the Inland Northwest's offerings should have something that hits your sweet spot. ♦

Tea. Will. Be. Spilled.

On Wednesday, July 17, Tana Mongeau and Brooke Schofield announced they’re adding a second leg to their ‘Cancelled Cross Country Tour.’

Starting in September, the candid co-hosts will swoop into 17 major venues all over North America.

That includes huge shows at Binghamton’s Broome County Forum on Tuesday, Sept. 17, New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Thursday, Sept. 19 and Friday, Sept. 20 . Their last NY show will be at Huntington’s Paramount Theatre on Friday, Sept. 27.

“(W)e can’t wait to meet more of the Cancelled family & spill more tea,” the duo shared on Instagram . “HOW IS THIS REAL LIFE!!!”

And if you want to hear all the bits that didn’t make the pod — possibly including some dirt on  Matt Rife  and  Jake Paul  — tickets are available for the fall 2024 ‘Cancelled Cross Country Tour.’

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on tickets was $52 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Other Cancelled Podcast shows start anywhere from $59 to $115 before fees .

For more information about how much tickets cost at the venue closest to you, we have everything you need to know about more about the fall 2024 ‘Cancelled Cross Country Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and, if it isn’t noted, will include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Still curious about Vivid Seats? You can find an article from their team about why the company is legit here .

Starting in July 2021 and now spanning 91 episodes, Mongeau and Schofield regularly dish for roughly an hour each show.

Topics the social media legends cover on the air include dating, the entertainment industry, growing up famous and OnlyFans while, yes, walking the line of decency.

Some may even say they veer into cancellable territory.

“Many of the guests that have been on the show have been ‘cancelled’ at different times through their career,” superfan Miska Salemann told us. “The hosts give them an opportunity to address their past transgressions…or at least attempt to apologize.”

If you want to listen to past episodes — featuring big name guests like Jojo Siwa,  Hannah Berner ,  Whitney Cummings ,  Tim Dillon  and Trisha Paytas among others — you can find their complete library  here .

Prior to the podcast, Mongeau was known for her popular YouTube “Storytime” videos.

Many of your favorite acts are out and about this year.

Here are just five you won’t want to miss live these next few months.

•  Sarah Silverman

•  Hannah Berner

•  Ali Wong

•  Nikki Glaser

•  Beth Stelling

Motorcycle tour of Death Valley turns fatal as thermometer cracks 128 degrees

As the temperature climbed Saturday to a record 128 degrees Fahrenheit in Death Valley National Park, a group of motorcyclists became distressed by the extreme heat, and one of them died, a park ranger said.

The motorcyclists were touring the park near Badwater Basin, a stretch of salt flats that is also the lowest point in North America, when — in the mid- to late afternoon — they reported being affected by the extreme heat, according to park ranger Nichole Andler.

One of the riders was pronounced dead at the site, and another person with severe heat illness was taken to Las Vegas, Andler said. Four others in the group were treated and released.

The name of the deceased motorcyclist, or other identifying information, was not released, and the specific cause of death will be determined by the coroner, Andler said.

“Yesterday it was 128 degrees, which was a record high for that day in Death Valley,” the ranger noted, “and these folks were traveling through on motorcycles, and most likely they didn’t have adequate cooling.”

The heat also hindered the rescue effort. When temperatures exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit, a medical helicopter cannot access the park. Air expands when it is heated, becoming thinner than cold air. So, helicopters can’t get the lift needed to fly.

But Andler said that, in addition to park rangers, first responders from Inyo County and nearby Pahrump, Nev., assisted the bikers.

I searched hell on Earth for a story. What I found will haunt me forever

A visit to Death Valley National Park has profound consequences for a veteran of extreme temperature. “I thought I knew heat.”

July 27, 2023

Saturday’s temperature was just shy of the all-time heat record in Death Valley — 134 degrees, which was set on July 10, 1913. Since record-keeping began in 1911, temperatures have reached or exceeded 130 degrees only three times — with two of those times since 2020: Aug. 16, 2020, and again on July 9, 2021.

Each year, at least one to three people die of heat-related illnesses while visiting the park, and each week, there are one to three calls for medical assistance for heat-related stress.

“Folks get excited about experiencing the warmest temperatures that they’ve ever experienced before, and sometimes they forget that if an hour ago they were hot and started to feel nauseous, then they need to spend the rest of the day in air conditioning — because that could be the earliest sign of heat illness,” Andler said. “If you warm up and never properly cool down, your body doesn’t get a chance to reset.”

Elsewhere in Southern California, the heat shattered records and broiled communities.

On Sunday, Palmdale and Lancaster each set record highs for that date — with Palmdale seeing a 114-degree high, exceeding the record of 110 set in 1989. In Lancaster, the 115 degrees recorded Sunday topped the record of 110 reported in 1989 and 2017.

The National Weather Service said that extreme heat would continue this week across the Southland, with highs of 105 to 115 in the interior valleys, mountains and deserts.

Why mass shootings and violence increase in the summer

Violence and mass shootings often surge in summer, especially around the Fourth of July, historically one of the deadliest days of the year. Here’s why.

July 5, 2024

The excessive-heat warning was extended to 9 p.m. Thursday for the western San Gabriel Mountains, the Antelope Valley, Angeles Crest Highway and the corridors of the 5 and 14 freeways.

Another excessive-heat warning was in place until Wednesday for the Santa Clarita Valley, Santa Monica Mountains, Calabasas, the San Fernando Valley and eastern San Gabriel Mountains — regions where temperatures were forecast to exceed 100 degrees, according to the weather service.

Things to know

  • Peter Kuest and Matt McCarty share the 36-hole lead at 11-under 133, marking the first 36-hole lead/co-lead in a Korn Ferry Tour event for both players; they hold a one-stroke lead over five players who stand T3.
  • Christo Lamprecht (T3/-10), who finished No. 2 in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking and earned fully exempt Korn Ferry Tour membership for the remainder of the 2024 season, makes his first cut in what is his fourth start on Tour since turning professional out of Georgia Tech.
  • Cheyenne, Wyoming native Joshua Creel (T3/-10) cards a second consecutive 5-under 67 and sits one stroke off the lead, holds his highest 36-hole position in a Korn Ferry Tour event since the 2023 Visit Knoxville Open (T3/finished T52).
  • The 36-hole cut was made at 3-under 141, with 74 professionals advancing to the weekend.
  • Third-round pairings will run from 6:30 a.m. through 1:20 p.m. local time off the first tee.

Charting the co-leaders

Matt mccarty (t1/-11).

  • Holds first 36-hole lead/co-lead in what is his 67th career start on the Korn Ferry Tour
  • Previous career-high 36-hole position was T3 (2023 UNC Health Championship presented by STITCH/finished T8; 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance/finished T14)
  • Follows 7-under 65 with 4-under 68 to total 11-under 133, his second-lowest opening 36-hole score of the season (11-under 132/BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX)
  • Making third appearance at The Ascendant presented by Blue (missed cut in both previous appearances)
  • Had not broken par in any of his four previous rounds at The Ascendant presented by Blue
  • Finished in the top 75 of the Korn Ferry Tour Points List each of the last two seasons (No. 55 as a rookie in 2022, No. 35 in 2023) and is fully exempt for 2024
  • Earned Korn Ferry Tour membership for the first time ahead of the 2022 season with a T39 at Final Stage of 2021 Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament (now PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry)
  • Turned professional in 2021 after five seasons at Santa Clara University (2016-21), where he earned three All-West Coast Conference honors (2018, 2019, 2021)

Peter Kuest (T1/-11)

  • Holds first career 36-hole lead/co-lead in what is his 25th career start on the Korn Ferry Tour
  • Previous career-high 36-hole position on Tour was T6/2022 Utah Championship presented by Zions Bank and Intermountain Health
  • Follows 4-under 68 with 7-under 65 for his lowest opening 36-hole score of the season (previous: 10-under 134/Compliance Solutions Championship)
  • Earned Special Temporary Membership on the PGA TOUR last season off the strength of top-25s at the 2023 CJ CUP Byron Nelson (T14), 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic (T4), and 2023 John Deere Classic (T17); he failed to accrue enough non-member FedExCup points to finish in the top 125 of the 2022-23 FedExCup Fall, relegating him to conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour for the 2024 season
  • Finished No. 128 on the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Points List as a rookie, after he earned conditional membership with a T63 at Final Stage of 2021 Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament (now PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry)
  • Since the start of 2022, has more top 25s on the PGA TOUR (seven) than Korn Ferry Tour (three)
  • Turned professional in 2020 after four seasons at Brigham Young University (2016-20), where he won 10 individual titles, including the 2017 West Coast Conference Championship, and was named the 2019 West Coast Conference Golfer of the Year

Peter Kuest on what he likes about TPC Colorado: “I like playing at elevation. I live in Utah so I'm used to elevation. Greens are awesome, fairways are great, rough's tough. I think it's just a good test of golf.”

Kuest on playing the PGA TOUR as a Special Temporary Member last season but failing to retain status: “It's definitely tough when you feel like you've played well enough and do some different things to where you should have some status somewhere and then you come out here and you basically have no status. It's definitely tough in that regard. But each week's a new opportunity and just going to try to make the most of it.”

Peter Kuest on receiving Special Temporary Membership on PGA TOUR

Additional player notes

  • Christo Lamprecht (T3/-10) eagles the par-5 first and fifth, making him the only player with multiple eagles in the second round.
  • Two-time Korn Ferry Tour winner Trevor Cone (T3/-10), who graduated to the PGA TOUR following the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour season, ties his highest 36-hole position of the season and stands T3 through 36 holes for a second consecutive start (Compliance Solutions Championship/finished T8 for his fourth top-10 of the season).
  • Cristobal Del Solar (T3/-10), who finished No. 52 on the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Points List for fully exempt status this season, stands T3 or higher through 36 holes for the third time this season (second/Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard/finished fifth; T1/Visit Knoxville Open/finished T8).
  • Del Solar has five top 10s in 15 starts on Tour this season and currently stands No. 18 on the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Points List.
  • Korn Ferry Tour winner Rick Lamb (T3/-10) ties his career-high 36-hole position in a Korn Ferry Tour event (T3/2016 AdventHealth Championship/finished T34) and stands inside the top five after 36 holes for the second time this season (T4/LECOM Suncoast Classic/finished T37); Lamb is seeking his first top 25 on Tour since the 2021 Visit Knoxville Open/T22.
  • Cole Sherwood (T8/-9), the No. 7 finisher in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking, logs his second made cut in his third career start on the Korn Ferry Tour (T46/2024 Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open).
  • Karl Vilips (T14/-8), the No. 10 finisher in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking and a sponsor exemption this week, makes the cut in his Korn Ferry Tour debut.
  • Outright 18-hole leader Richy Werenski (T14/-8) follows his first-round 9-under 63 – which tied the 18-hole tournament scoring record and TPC Colorado course record – with 1-over 73.
  • University of Colorado alum Jeremy Paul (T29/-6), winner of the 2024 season-opening The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic at Sandals Emerald Bay, falls 23 places on the leaderboard after even-par 72 Friday.
  • Four of the eight open qualifiers make the 36-hole cut: Will Chandler (T14/-8), Austin Duncan (T29/-6), Timmy Crawford (T45/-5), Turk Pettit (T65/-3).
  • This marks the third time this season at least four open qualifiers make the 36-hole cut (six/Veritex Bank Championship; four/AdventHealth Championship).
