Artist Information

Craig Ferguson is an Emmy Award-winning actor, writer and comedian with a diverse career that encompasses film, television and the stage. Last February, Ferguson returned to the big screen as his reprised character ‘Gobber’ in the third installment in the animated feature “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.” Ferguson released his third book,  Riding the Elephant: A Memoir of Altercations, Humiliations, Hallucinations, and Observations , in May 2019 with Blue Rider Press, an imprint of Penguin Random House. In Summer of 2018, Ferguson completed filming the feature film “Love Me to Death” in his native Scotland alongside Kathie Lee Gifford, who wrote the film.

As the host of “Celebrity Name Game,” Ferguson was awarded the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Game Show Host two years in a row and was nominated for a third. Recently, Ferguson concluded his wildly popular daily SiriusXM program “The Craig Ferguson Show.” In September 2018, Ferguson embarked on his North American comedy tour “Hobo Fabulous” offering audience members an exclusive one night only show that would not be recorded, which will continue through the end of 2019. In 2014, Ferguson concluded his ten-year run as the host of CBS’ “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” which had set all-time viewer records and earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination and the 2009 Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting for his interview with Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Ferguson got his start in the entertainment industry as a drummer for some of the worst punk bands in the U.K. Following his musical stint, he began bartending in a local pub in Glasgow where he was introduced to Michael Boyd, the artistic director of The Tron Theatre in Glasgow, who persuaded Ferguson to try acting. After several low paying acting gigs, Ferguson discovered he had a knack for comedy and was soon the star of his own BBC television show, “The Ferguson Theory.” After several stints on the English comedy circuit, Ferguson brought his act to America in 1995 to star with Betty White and Marie Osmond in the short-lived ABC comedy, “Maybe This Time.” After the show ended, ABC decided to add the talented Scotsman to “The Drew Carey Show,” playing Drew Carey's boss, ‘Nigel Wick,’ from 1996-2003. In 2016, Ferguson debuted his original History Channel show, “Join or Die,” which featured him and his celebrity friends debating provocative topics with history experts.

Ferguson has written the feature films “The Big Tease” and “Saving Grace”. In 2003, he made his directorial debut with “I'll Be There,” which he also wrote and starred in. “I'll Be There” went on to receive the Audience Award for Best Film at the Aspen, Dallas, and Valencia film festivals. Craig was also named "best new director" at the Napa Valley Film Festival. Ferguson’s other film credits include, “Niagra Motel,” “Lenny the Wonder Dog,” “Prendimi l’anima,” “Life Without Dick,” “Chain of Fools” and “Born Romantic.” In 2011, Ferguson portrayed ‘Owl’ in the Disney classic “Winnie the Pooh,” and in 2012 he portrayed ‘Lord Macintosh’ in Disney’s animated feature “Brave.”

Ferguson has achieved notable success on the North American comedy circuit and has performed to sold-out theaters all across the country, including Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. He has five widely acclaimed stand-up comedy specials: “A Wee Bit O’ Revolution” which premiere in 2009 on Comedy Central; “Does This Need to Be Said” in 2011 on EPIX and Comedy Central; “I’m Here to Help” in 2013 on Netflix, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album; “Just Being Honest” in 2015 on EPIX, which earned him a second Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album; and “Tickle Fight” in 2017 on Netflix.

In 2006, Ferguson debuted his first novel entitled  Between the Bridge and the River , which made it onto the bestseller list.  In 2008, Ferguson succeeded in becoming a US Citizen, mentioning that this is his home after thirteen years and “my heart is here.” Soon after, Craig had landed himself the biggest date of all; a date with President Bush hosting the White House Correspondence Dinner. Critics raved of his witty and comical deliverance speech to the 3,000 attendees who included political journalists, celebrities, and Washington’s power players. In 2009, Harper Collins published Ferguson’s memoir  American on Purpose  - a book about why and how late night funnyman Craig Ferguson became an American. The book was listed on the New York Times bestseller list. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word.

Ferguson also serves on the board of the Lollipop Theater Network. The mission of the Lollipop Theater Network is to bring movies that are currently in theatrical release to hospitalized children facing chronic and life threatening illnesses nationwide.

Some of his popular work includes his nine-skit series titled “Thawt in my House,” and his spot-on mom and grand-mom impersonations, which elevated his popularity because of how well audiences related to his characters and situations depicted in his sketches. He started receiving direct messages from fans who watch him daily expressing how his videos got them through a rough time, or simply brightened their day. This became his motivation to write and perform more often. He loved seeing the positive feedback, the laughs and smiles he could put on people’s faces. Corey Holcomb

Going from hanging in the hood to performing comedy on Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show.” Corey’s comedy genius transcends class and racial divides. If you understand English, Corey’s humor will tickle your funny bone. People all over the world can relate to the drama of trying to make a relationship work. According to Corey, a “hunter” (man) being captured by his “prey” (woman) makes for the best comedy ever.

Corey offers plenty of advice on how men who have been the victim of a “hostile takeover” by the female in the relationship can take back control. You can believe there is no counselor on the planet who offers the kind of relationship advice and remedies Corey dispenses from the stage. Corey Holcomb’s comedy set is both an auditory and visual experience. His facial gestures alone can make an audience burst with laughter. “I spend a lot of time practicing my stage faces because I need to be able to convey care and concern while I criticize.” Although Corey has a long and diverse resume of successes, he remains humble and approachable.

Corey currently tours the country performing standup & his Comedy/R&B songs. He also hosts his podcast, The Corey Holcomb 5150 Show, which began on The Foxxhole but later moved to YouTube and CoreyHolcomb5150Show.com.

To those in the know Arnez J. one of the hottest, most talked about comedic artists in the game. His raw energy, talent and comedic skill quickly landed Arnez the coveted hosting slot on BET’s longest-running comedy series “Comic View” for two seasons joining the ranks of hosts such as D.L. Hughley and Cedric the Entertainer. His hilarious new comedy special “Racially Motivated” is now available on Netflix.

Arnez J.'s charisma and physical agility are unforgettable. “J is a whirling dervish on stage—he runs, jumps, spins, slides, slips, and mugs through a performance, acting out many of his bits while describing them,” wrote Doug Kaufman in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Arnez admits of himself “I've always expressed my things through mannerisms and facial expressions rather than speaking.”

On his own at age 14, Arnez lied about his age to get a job at a gas station to work his way through school. With dreams to become a professional baseball player, Arnez began working as a flight attendant when those baseball plans fell through. It was while working as a flight attendant that Arnez discovered his comedic talent. He realized that he had the ability to keep the passengers and crew laughing and, upon encouragement from friends, he made his first attempt at stand-up comedy. After that first night on stage, he knew what he wanted to do. He left his job with the airlines and made the decision to devote all of his time to a career in comedy.

Arnez got a chance to combine his ambitions as both an athlete and performer when he was recruited by scouts for the famed Harlem Globetrotters basketball team who saw his very physical comedy routine at a local basketball game. However, after several months, a knee injury ended his Globetrotters career, finally clearing the way for him to devote himself full time to standup comedy.

An Atlanta native, Arnez began working the comedy circuit in Georgia and quickly became one of “Hotlanta's” funniest newcomers. A finalist in the “Bay Area Black Comedy Competition,” he was immediately noticed by the entertainment industry and was asked to make his first television appearance on Showtime's “Comedy Club Network.” Numerous television appearances soon followed including appearances on “The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show,” “Louie Anderson's Comedy Showcase,” Comedy Central's “Make Me Laugh,” NBC's “Friday Night Videos,” “The Mo’Nique Show”, Russell Simmons' “Def Comedy Jam,” his own BET “Comic View Grandstand Hour Special,” and “Comedy Central Presents: Arnez J.” He was most recently seen headlining Showtime’s “Shaquille O'Neal Presents: All Star Comedy Jam.”

Today, Arnez is widely considered one of the best working artists, with a polished and highly entertaining standup routine that keeps his audiences entertained. In keeping with his plan, Arnez keeps up a dizzying pace performing for sold out crowds at arenas and other venues across the country.

Steve Byrne

Steve Byrne has risen through the ranks of the comedy world to become one of the industry’s most innovative and sought-after performers. He has evolved throughout the years into an extremely versatile entertainer that delivers on a day-to-day basis. Hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, Steve Byrne was born to a Korean mother and an Irish father. His unique background gave him the base comedic material for his first television show, Sullivan & Son, which aired for 3 seasons on TBS.

Byrne released his fourth hour stand up special entitled "Tell the Damn Joke" in early 2017. He previously released his third comedy special, Champion, on Netflix in May 2014. His popular podcast, The Gentlemen’s Dojo, premiered in late Aug. 2015 on All Things Comedy and is a passion project for Steve along with his co-host, Gary Cannon. He's currently in post production of a documentary he's directing on comedian/magician The Amazing Johnathan entitled "Always Amazing". Byrne is also developing his next venture into scripted television and a feature film script he's written based on his early years in stand up.

He began his career slugging it out in the comedy clubs of New York City and making the esteemed Comedy Cellar his home club all the while. In 2006, after winning TBS’ cutthroat competition, the “Standup or Sitdown Comedy Challenge”, Byrne was hurtled into a brilliant television and film career. As his popularity began to expand, Byrne was featured in his very own half-hour Comedy Central Presents which was soon voted as one of the best specials of all time in the Comedy Central Standup Showdown. His hilarious standup has been seen on TBS’s Conan, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, CBS’s The Late Late Show, BET’s Comic View and he has appeared on NBC’s The Tonight Show a total of 10 times.

In 2008, Byrne’s first one-hour special, Steve Byrne’s Happy Hour, premiered on Comedy Central and his second hour, The Byrne Identity premiered in 2010 and further cemented his star status.

A true international comedian, Byrne has performed to sold-out crowds around the world. He has been a featured comic at the Just for Laughs Festival (in Montreal, Toronto and Chicago), HBO’s US Comedy Arts Festival in Las Vegas and the CanWest Comedy Fest in Vancouver. He has been part of several national comedy tours including The Jameson Comedy Tour, Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Tour, The Kims of Comedy, The Camel Cigarettes Sin City Tour, and his own national Myspace Comedy tour. Byrne even had the honor of opening for popular musical acts such as Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Modest Mouse, Puddle of Mudd, Spoon, Rev. Horton Heat and many more. As a big supporter of the US troops, Steve also headlined several USO tours in Afghanistan, Iraq, Japan and Guam. He's about to head out on his 8th tour in spring of 2017.

Byrne has appeared in the hit comedies The Dilemma, Couples Retreat, Four Christmases and The Goods: The Don Ready Story. His 2006 documentary, 13 or Bust (available on youtube), chronicles the attempt to perform 13 comedy shows in Manhattan in one night.

Steve now calls Los Angeles home, woking his nights off the road at iconic Hollywood clubs, The Comedy Store and The Improv. Byrne’s lack of ego and outstanding work ethic has helped him become one of today’s most respected comedians.

Shuler King

Shuler King, the world’s only comedian, actor and licensed funeral director, has taken the world by storm through his hilarious, real, and relatable videos commenting on everything that’s happening on the internet and in pop-culture. An accomplished stand-up and performer, King had to adapt during the pandemic and started broadcasting his thoughts from his car instead of from a comedy club stage. He quickly resonated with audiences and amassed a following of over 2 million fans across platforms with millions upon millions of views. King now tours nationwide to sold out audiences and is one of the most energetic rising comedians in the business.

King was born Frank Williams III in Sumter, South Carolina. He knew at an early age that he was destined to be an entertainer especially since he was the kid known for cracking jokes. King grew up in a traditional 2-parent household in the Bible Belt of the South, where Faith, Hard Work and Education were the foundations of what his parents imparted on him and his two siblings. Comedy is his passion, but he has taken a rather unusual path to get to where he is thus far. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in Media Arts where he joined The Mighty Illustrious Zeta Zeta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. In 2013 he graduated from Gupton Jones Mortuary College with a degree in Mortuary Science. Craig Ferguson is a multiple Grammy nominated, Peabody and Emmy Award-winning actor, writer, producer, director and comedian with a diverse career that encompasses film, television and the stage. He is a New York Times bestselling author and has recorded numerous standup specials for Netflix, Epix, Comedy Central and Amazon

The wildly popular Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson ran on CBS for ten years and remains a cult favorite on YouTube racking up millions of views every year on fan posted bootleg clips.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Ferguson got his start in the entertainment industry as a drummer for some of the worst punk bands in the U.K. Following his musical stint, he began bartending in a local pub in Glasgow where he was introduced to Sir Michael Boyd, the artistic directo r of The Tron Theatre in Glasgow, who persuaded Ferguson to try acting. After several low paying acting gigs, Ferguson discovered he had a knack for comedy and was soon the star of his own BBC television show, “The Ferguson Theory.” After several stints on the UK comedy circuit, Ferguson brought his act to America in 1995 to star with Betty White and Marie Osmond in the short-lived ABC comedy, “Maybe This Time.” After the show ended, ABC decided to add the talented Scotsman to “The Drew Carey Show,” playing Drew Carey's boss, ‘Nigel Wick,’ from 1996-2003.

In 2016, Ferguson debuted his original History Channel show, “Join or Die,” which featured him and his celebrity friends debating provocative topics with history experts. He also hosted Celebrity Name Game in syndication where he won the Emmy for best host two years in a row and The Hustler for ABC/Disney.

Ferguson’s other film credits include, “Niagra Motel,” “Lenny the Wonder Dog,” “Prendimi l’anima,” “Life Without Dick,” “Chain of Fools” and “Born Romantic.” In 2011, Ferguson portrayed ‘Owl’ in the Disney classic “Winnie the Pooh,” and in 2012 he portrayed ‘Lord Macintosh’ in Disney’s Oscar winning animated feature “Brave.” He also voices Gobber in the hugely successful How To Train Your Dragon movies.

Ferguson has achieved notable success on the North American comedy circuit and has performed to sold-out theaters all across the country, including Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. He has five widely acclaimed stand-up comedy specials: “A Wee Bit O’ Revolution” which premiere in 2009 on Comedy Central; “Does This Need to Be Said” in 2011 on EPIX and Comedy Central; “I’m Here to Help” in 2013 on Netflix, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album; “Just Being Honest” in 2015 on EPIX, which earned him a second Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album; and “Tickle Fight” in 2017 on Netflix and the six part stand up/docu-series “Hobo Fabulous” on Amazon in 2020.

In 2006, Ferguson debuted his first novel entitled Between the Bridge and the River, which made it onto the bestseller list. In 2008, Ferguson succeeded in becoming a US Citizen. His first gig as a new American was hosting the White House Correspondence Dinner in the company of President George W Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

His most recent book Riding the Elephant- a series of linked biographical stories- is available from Penguin books.

Confirmed: Late Late Show’s Craig Ferguson makes a return

It’s been quite some time since television’s Craig Ferguson has returned to America. Despite continuing his promise to never set sail in the waters of late night television again, the host has announced a new set of US dates for his upcoming stand-up comedy tour.

Since leaving his ventures in America behind, the comedian now resides in rural Scotland with his family, away from a manic Hollywood life.

After leaving his CBS job back in 2015, the host was soon a fan favourite on Sirius XM before making a permanent decision to focus solely on stand up comedy and authoring. Ferguson released Hobo Fabulous , which toured across the country in 2019, later becoming a 6-part documentary special.

The former Late Late Show host will soon embark on the Fancy Rascal tour across the United States from September, visiting practically every city in America, we’re not joking. All available tickets can be found on his website or via Ticketmaster.

New shows have recently been announced in Denver, Cleveland and Tampa.

If Ferguson’s upcoming stand up tour doesn’t excite you enough, it seems the former CBS host is keen to begin even more new projects. On Twitter this month, the comedian asked his followers: ‘Podcast?’ with a poll underneath, hinting a return to his Sirius style format back in 2017.

Craig Ferguson congratulates James Corden

Ahead of his US comedy run, Ferguson made sure to congratulate his late night successor, James Corden after the current Late Late Show host announced his departure.

On Twitter, the Scotsman wrote : “Congratulations to @JKCorden on a spectacular run. Outstanding job! Retirement is awesome. See you at the bingo. Well done my friend. Xx”

Craig Ferguson took The Late Late Show to Scotland (even though he used to get beat up there)

Craig Ferguson’s background, which includes stints as a punk-rock musician, stand-up comedian, sitcom actor, and screenwriter, may explain why his freewheeling efforts as the host of CBS’ The Late Late Show  consistently stand out in the crowded late-night television landscape. With the success of last year’s Paris-filmed installments tucked in his back pocket, Ferguson took The Late Late Show to his native Scotland for a week’s worth of episodes, the first of which airs tonight. Ferguson spoke with The A.V. Club about the process of preparing for such an expedition, as well as his past TV and film work, the possibility of another book, and his thoughts on leaving late night.

The A.V. Club: First you took The Late Late Show to Paris, now you’ve gone to Scotland. Did you want to work out the kinks in the process somewhere other than your native land?

Related Content

Craig Ferguson : Well, that’s right. Listen, if I know anything Scotland, it’s you don’t want to go in there without some preparation and a bit of training. Especially the neighborhoods that I was going back to. So yeah, the reason I went to Paris first was that we figured if we get it wrong, at least the background is Paris, and it’ll look pretty. And then when we went to Scotland, we realized it was actually prettier than Paris and we should’ve gone there first.

AVC: How do you feel the Paris episodes went? Was there anything that went poorly in Paris that you were therefore able to avoid in Scotland?

CF : Yeah, we did a couple of things wrong that we didn’t do in Scotland. What we did was, we tried to do it too quickly. I think we shot over three days in Paris. And we tried to do it in a country where English is not the first language. And, of course, there was some of the crew that argued that English is not the first language in Scotland. [Laughs.] But I speak it pretty good! And we were kind of a little more fish-out-of-water there. I obviously felt much more at home in Scotland. And we had a fantastic crew from Scotland, really good people. It was just a much more fun experience all around. Also, I knew where I was going. I mean, I have some history in Paris, but I’ve got a lot of fucking history in Scotland, so there were plenty of places to go. During one of the initial scouts, I was walking around going, “Got my ass kicked there . Got my ass kicked there . Got my ass kicked there .” We finally said, “Look, we’ve got to just pick one. We can’t just have a tour of places where you got your ass kicked.”

AVC: How did you go about selecting locations for filming? As you say, you could’ve strictly gone to your old haunts, but based on the preview, it seems you also made a point of trying to meet expectations of viewers with only a casual knowledge of the country.

CF : Well, what we wanted to do was do a little bit of both. You want to get some personal stuff, because there’s some funny and interesting stories and some wild stories from back in the day. So we went to my old high school and did a couple of things there, and we went to a bar where I got my ass kicked and recreated that bar fight using child actors, so it wasn’t as threatening. We just put 11-year-old kids in moustaches. And then we went to places like a park where I had a bad acid trip, where I thought the ducks were attacking me. We also went to Edinburgh Castle and to the art gallery in Glasgow, and we went to the Tron Theater in Glasgow and the ancient capital of Scotland. So we went around some big touristy places, too, to try and get a mix of both things.

AVC: Did your early stand-up alter ego Bing Hitler come up at all during the trip?

CF : Not much. It’s funny, that Bing Hitler thing is so bizarre, because in Scotland they still remember that really well. I only actually did it for about 18 months. But it’s kind of a vivid name, I guess. [Laughs.] Once you hear it, you’re kind of like, “Oh yeah, I remember that…”

AVC: What’s your level of fame over there? Does The Late Late Show have a cult there like, say, Graham Norton’s show has here?

CF : That’s about exactly right, actually. That’s about exactly the pitch. In fact, we were filming in Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh, which is where Voldemort fights Harry Potter , and while we were there, I was standing under this umbrella—it was raining, and we were waiting for it to clear—and heard some Scottish people walking by. And they didn’t know I was there, so they were talking about the film unit being in the graveyard, and I heard one of them say, “Who is it? What’s going on here?” Someone said, “It’s Craig Ferguson.” The first one said, “Is he famous?” And the other one said, “Yes, but only in America.” [Laughs.] So sort of a compliment and an insult at exactly the same time.

AVC: What kind of reaction did you get from bystanders when you took characters like Geoff Peterson and Secretariat overseas? Not that there aren’t plenty of Americans who stare blankly at them, but…

CF : [Laughs.] Well, you’ve answered your own question. People are like, “Ah, there’s a gay robot skeleton over there and a dancin’ horse…” The thing about it, particularly the dancing horse, is that people laugh when they see it. I remember even in Paris, when we let the horse run around the Palace Of Versailles, people were just laughing at it, because it’s a stupid-looking horse. A big, stupid-looking horse running around is fun! We actually created a scene where Secretariat gets to rejoin his herd, and we had a bunch of pantomime horses with people in them all over the moors of Scotland. [Laughs.] It was really fun.

AVC: When picking guests for these on-location events, do you fly people in, or do you try to get a feel for who happens to be over there at the time you’re filming?

CF : No, no, we fly ’em in. But what we do—well, it’s really my call—is say, “Look, let’s take people who are fun, who’ve done other things on the show, who’ve done a little bit more than be a guest here.” Like, Michael Clarke Duncan’s been here a ton of times and done a ton of stuff, and Mila [Kunis] has done sketches here, and so has Rashida [Jones] . Ariel Tweto’s, like, our bestie friend from Alaska, and David Sedaris is such a fantastic, odd fella. He joins in, but only in a David Sedaris way, which is really fucking—I love that. He can have absolutely zero enthusiasm about joining it, or it looks like he hasn’t, but he actually is joining in. He’s a fantastically funny man. So it was bringing people who I liked and who I got along with personally, because you’re on the road with them, you know? So it has to be that.

AVC: Speaking of guests in general, based on his appearance on your show, Wilford Brimley seems to be one of the greatest talk-show guests in the history of the medium as well as one of the worst.

CF : I think that’s a fair assessment of the situation. I mean, the “get” of Brimley is really the big win. But then there’s the “sit” of Brimley, which almost negates the “get” of Brimley. [Laughs.]

AVC: You seem to go out of your way to book guests who have a deep history in television and film, whether or not their current profile is all that high.

CF : I don’t give a shit about that. It’s funny, you know, people with high profiles…I don’t know. Like, the guillotine drew a crowd. That doesn’t mean shit to me. I think that what I’m interested in is what I’m interested in, and that’s what I want to book. And I think people that like this show either like the same things as I do or they don’t like this show. Which is fine. That’s cool.

AVC: You also don’t tend to turn your show into a recurring series of plugs. It’s actual conversation, sometimes so unabashedly frank that it’s got to freak the network out on occasion.

CF : Yeah, I mean, a little bit. But they know what they’ve got. We’re cool. [Laughs.] I think what really saves our show is the history that I have with [CBS President] Les Moonves that goes back forever. Les and I actually know each other. Both he and David Letterman and Nina Tassler, who runs the network as well, I’m kind of friendly with these people. They’re my bosses for sure, but… [Pauses.] Well, less so with Dave. I’m not that friendly with Dave, just because Dave’s a cranky loner and everybody knows that. But I’m friendly enough when I see him. But with Nina and Les, it’s a very easy relationship. I don’t get emails from my corporate overlords. [Laughs.] Not yet, anyway. Or maybe they just don’t watch the show. Maybe that’s it.

AVC: Are we ever likely to see another episode like the one with Stephen Fry, where it’s just you and a guest, without a studio audience, talking for the full hour?

CF : Yeah, for sure. I just don’t know who it’s gonna be yet. These things kind of tend to happen very fast. You know, somebody’ll be in town, and I’ll say, “Well, fuck it, let’s just do that now!” And that’s kind of how the Stephen thing happened. It was like, “Stephen’s in town, but we don’t have a spot.” And I said, “Well, Stephen’s very interesting. Let’s do a whole fucking show on Stephen.” [Laughs.] And that’s what we did. And it worked out. So we’ll see what happens again. I try not to plan too much advance for the show. I mean, obviously, when you go to Scotland or someplace like that, that goes out the window, but most of the time I try to keep it very loose.

AVC: You’ve kind of phased out having musical performers on a regular basis, but in the early days, you were rather alone in the wilderness with some of the people you were booking — for instance, you brought on The Damned — and with the diversity: one day Megadeth, a few days later The Blue Nile.

CF : Right, yeah, I had The Blue Nile on, The Damned, The Buzzcocks . I’ve had the [Sex] Pistols on , a whole lot of country acts on. And I will again. It’s really hard to put a musical act on in the studio that we’ve been using—I mean, it really is a monstrous pain in the ass—but we’re moving to a new studio in August, and it’s much bigger, and it’ll be much easier to have musical acts on. Which I for one am deeply relieved about, because it’s hard to keep that end of the bargain up when—we really do make this show in a fucking shoebox. It’s tiny .

AVC: Are you concerned about losing any of the intimacy you’ve got now?

CF: Nah. The camera’ll be the same distance away, and it’ll still be me, and it’ll still be the same cameraman. I mean, people will get mad, because people get mad, anyway. ’Cause change is frightening. But it’s got to come. You’ve got to keep changing it, or else I’ll get bored. And if I get bored, I’m gonna quit. So it has to keep moving. It’s just the nature of things. Some people will like the change, some people will hate it. And I’ll probably be in both camps. [Laughs.]

AVC: When you spoke during the Television Critics Association press tour a few years ago, someone mentioned how much people loved the puppets, and you said, “Well, I’ll probably stop doing them soon, then.”

CF : Yeah, well, I’ve dropped all but one of the puppets right now. But it’s not a manifesto. I mean, what time is it right now? Three o’clock? By the show tonight, it may be an all-puppet show. [Laughs.] I don’t want to commit.

AVC: Most Americans first became aware of you via The Drew Carey Show , but what do you recall about the episode of Red Dwarf that you appeared in, “ Confidence And Paranoia ”?

CF : Uh, very little. [Laughs.] That was way back. That was one of the first jobs I had. I do remember we rehearsed it in London and we shot it in Manchester, and there was a hotel in Manchester called The Britannia that we stayed at, which was absolutely notorious. I mean, it was crazy . And Craig Charles and I were both big drinkers at the time, so it was a bit nutty. I think Craig is off the sauce now as well, but at the time… yeah, it was a bit nutty.

AVC: You also turned up in the UK documentary series Heroes Of Comedy to praise the work of Frankie Howerd.

CF : That’s… possible. [Laughs.] I loved Frank, and I knew him and I worked with him, and he was an interesting old fella, but… maybe this is age, but I’ve no recollection of actually doing that documentary. [Laughs.] But I did work with Frank before he died. Because my mentor in comedy was Peter Cook. He was kind of like my svengali, the guy who could really help me get away from Bing Hitler and actually do some other stuff. And I did a special for Channel Four round about the time I did that Red Dwarf thing. It was a stand-up special, but there were interstitials that were, like, flashbacks to my family life. And it was a fictional family life, so Peter Cook played my dad and June Whitfield, a great British actress, played my mother, and Frankie Howerd played Francis, the god of comedy, who appeared to me in a nightmare. So I did a bunch of filming with all those guys. Well, Cooky and I were friends, anyway. Or became friends. I was kind of like a fan or a stalker with him. But he was just so kind and so nice, and the best comedic mind I’ve ever encountered in my life. And I include Robin [Williams] or Billy [Connolly] or even the Pythons. I think Cooky was the best I’ve ever seen. He was just awesome. Peter had the Establishment Club in London in the ’60s, and he put Frankie on in the same bill as Lenny Bruce. [Laughs.] Which I thought was fucking genius. I wish I’d been there that night.

AVC: Yet Americans really only know him from having played mean Mr. Mustard in Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band .

CF : Well, that’s about all that Americans saw of him. But he had a bunch of other stuff going on. He was a mad old bat.

AVC: The Late Late Show has obviously kept you busy for the past several years, but have you considered a return to film work if time should allow?

CF : The only film work I can do, really, is animated stuff right now, because it’s possible to do that and do this job. There’s no way I can actually go onto location and spend any real time on a film right now, just because of the nature of this show. I think I’d like to go back to it. I think I would. But I think going back to film would be a bit like going back to Scotland: I’d probably be very wary about it and probably find that I enjoyed it much more than I thought I was going to. I’m much more open to these kind of things now. I think the longer this show is on the air, the more comfortable I get doing it, and I think the more likely these other things are possible, but with film, it’s just the time, you know?

AVC: How do you look back on the films that you had a hand in writing?

CF : I’m very proud of… some of them. [Laughs.] Saving Grace , I think, is a terrific movie. And I think The Big Tease is a really good movie as well. I’m proud of these movies. Some I’m less proud of, but that’s the nature of that shit, you know? You just kind of do your best, and there it is.

AVC: You’ve also written a novel, Between The Bridge And The River , and a memoir, American On Purpose . Are there more books in your future?

CF : Yeah. There are, but… God, it’s so fucking hard writing a book, you know? It’s really hard. I mean, I don’t know how all those Russians did it. It’s enormously difficult.

AVC: How long do you see yourself sticking with The Late Late Show ? Or will it just be a snap decision, where one day you’ll suddenly say, “Well, I’m done”?

CF : I think it’s more likely the latter. Looking at my own history and the way I’ve behaved in the past, I think that’s probably the most likely event. That it’ll be short notice. That I’ll go, “Right, that’s it, I’m done.” You know, I think I’ll probably get through the show tonight. [Laughs.] And I’ve got a contract for another couple of years. And I feel comfortable and happy doing the show. These things to tie into your personal life, like anybody’s job. I’ve got young kids, so it suits me to do a job which keeps me in town right now. Whether or not I’ll feel like that in five years, we’ll see.

A young man is aiming to walk more than 1,000 miles in a kilt from Scotland to Germany for the start of the Euros.

Craig Ferguson, 20, is taking on the solo mission to raise funds for Brothers in Arms, a men's mental health charity.

He will set off from Hampden Park in Glasgow on 4 May and will traverse through six countries with the intention of arriving in Munich for the beginning of the football tournament , which opens with the Germany v Scotland game on 14 June.

The Paisley waiter told Sky News he can't wait to share his story with all those he meets on the road in his custom-made kilt and hopes they get behind his fundraiser.

Mr Ferguson, who works at a cafe, ran the idea past his boss while the pair were out having a drink at a concert.

"He thought it was amazing and was like, '100% you need to do it'," Mr Ferguson said.

His planned route will see him trek 1,017 miles through Scotland , England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany .

'The travel aspect of the challenge excites me'

He didn't need to travel through Luxembourg to reach his final destination, but he added it to his adventure as he wanted to visit the country and take the challenge past 1,000 miles.

Craig Ferguson. Pic: JustGiving

Mr Ferguson said: "The travel aspect of the challenge excites me - exploring different places in Europe I would never have gone to.

"There's going to be days where I'll be walking in these different European cities in the kilt and I think that's absolutely brilliant."

He intends to walk eight to nine hours per day. Although he will pack a tent, he has planned his adventure so he's near a town or village each night and not "in the middle of nowhere".

In preparation for his trek, Mr Ferguson has been keeping up his weight training and cardio workouts to ensure he's at "peak physical health" going into the challenge.

He said: "It will be very strenuous. It's going to be hard - I'm under no false illusion that that won't be the case.

"I've also been getting my steps in by going out on big, long walks."

'I'll be in my own head a lot'

At the moment the challenge is completely solo, but Mr Ferguson hopes his brother or one of his best friends can find the time to join him on a small stretch of the walk at some point.

He said: "It's a long time to be away yourself, let alone to be doing a challenge like this.

"I'll be in my own head a lot. That's why this challenge ties in with the charity so perfectly.

"But I should cope okay. I'm used to doing a lot of things myself and I enjoy my own company.

"I know this is very different from going out for a leisurely lunch, but I don't think the solo aspect of the challenge will worry me.

"There will be a lot of small interactions with different people - telling people my story and getting people involved - that will really push me on to complete the challenge."

Mr Ferguson has launched a fundraiser via JustGiving and has collected more than £5,000 of his £10,000 target for Brothers in Arms.

The Scottish charity aims to tackle the stigma around men's mental health and support all those affected to help reduce male suicide rates.

He said: "We're over 50% of the way there on the money raised and I've not even took a step of the challenge yet, which has honestly taken me aback.

"I am so, so grateful to every person who has liked and shared [the fundraiser], and especially all those who have donated.

"It is all those who are giving their money towards the cause who will spur me on to complete the challenge. I'm so grateful to everyone."

'You cannot question my commitment as a Scotland fan'

He doesn't have a ticket for any of the Scotland games but plans to soak up the atmosphere once in Germany.

He said: "I'll be tuning in to every game. At the moment I don't have a ticket for any of them, so you cannot question my commitment as a Scotland fan at all.

"Walking all the way there without a ticket - that's commitment on another level.

"I'm going for the enjoyment of the football and the atmosphere. It's not often that Scotland even get to these tournaments. While I'm there, I'm just going to enjoy myself."

Mr Ferguson will still be in Germany when he celebrates his 21st birthday on 20 June.

He said: "That will be a nice way to celebrate my 21st birthday - in Germany getting a nice beer after that challenge."

Dan Proverbs, founder of Brothers in Arms, said the charity was "over the moon" with Mr Ferguson's "incredible mission".

Mr Proverbs added: "He is quite literally walking the talk, and in doing so will help break the silence around male mental health and the urgent need to tackle rising suicide rates.

"We will be supporting Craig all the way and urge everyone to do the same."

Scotland fan in 1,000-mile walk from Hampden to Munich for charity

Craig Ferguson set off from Hampden on Saturday morning - and hopes to arrive in Munich in time for Scotland's opener.

A Scotland fan has begun a 1,000 mile walk from Glasgow to the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany to raise money and awareness for men’s mental health.

Craig Ferguson, of Paisley, set off from Scotland’s national football stadium Hampden, to Munich.

The 20-year-old left at 10am on Saturday and will walk for 37 days, aiming to arrive in time for the first game of the tournament on June 14 between Germany and Scotland.

All the money he raises will go towards Brothers in Arms, a Scottish men’s mental health charity.

Mr Ferguson initially intended to raise £10,000 but having already beaten that target, he now hopes to hit £50,000 by the time he reaches Germany.

The first leg of his challenge will see him walk from Glasgow to Hull, East Yorkshire, which he hopes to complete in 12 days.

He will then take the ferry to Rotterdam in Holland, and cross six countries before reaching Germany.

While walking, he will wear a specially crafted, ultra-light sports kilt in a Euros tartan by Scottish kilt-makers Slanj.

The flags of Scotland’s group A opponents, Germany, Switzerland and Hungary are all featured in the kilt’s design, while a dark blue backdrop represents the colour of the Scottish strip.

Supporters can follow his journey through an online tracker, updated daily using his GPS location.

Ahead of his journey, he said: “You see things like this, and you wonder, what was going through his head? What started off as a joke with a friend about how we are going to get to Germany, sort of spiralled into a chance to make awareness of such an important issue all across this country.

“So I thought raising money for men’s mental health and suicide prevention was an issue that was super close to my heart, and if we can raise as much awareness along the way I just felt I needed to do this.

“I’ve not got a ticket yet, but I’m a bit of an optimist. But that’s not what this challenge is about. This challenge is about raising awareness for such an important cause like I said.

“If I get a ticket its a bonus, but I’m just looking forward to getting to Munich.

“The response from my friends and family has been, ‘ you are crazy’, but the support has just been overwhelming. Everyone is so behind me and I think that will really help motivate me on the days that it gets a bit tough.

“I am so excited to get going and can’t wait to fly the flag for Scotland on this special journey.”

The money raised for Brothers in Arms will go towards the development of a digital “talking and listening” tool named Blethr that aims to lower the male suicide rate in Scotland.

Brothers in Arms founder Dan Proverbs thanked Mr Ferguson for his support, and said “promoting men’s mental health awareness is a global issue” that is “severely underfunded”.

He added: “We are incredibly proud of Craig.

“He is a shining example of what can be achieved when you set your mind to it, and we are so grateful that he has chosen to complete this epic challenge for Brothers in Arms.”

A TARTAN-ARMY daft lad has been “promised his weight in beer” after he walks 500 miles and then 500 more from Scotland to Germany on a charity march to the Euros.

Craig Ferguson, 20, will embark on the month-long trek from Hampden on Saturday and arrive in Munich in time for Scotland’s clash with the host nation .

Craig will be walking from Hampden to Munich

The Paisley-born hiker will make the 1000-mile walk to the city while wearing a specially-made ultra-light sports kilt with a special Euros-themed tartan , as he strides across Europe to raise awareness of male suicide .

He has been blown away by the amount of support offered to him since announcing the fundraising effort and has already smashed his £10k target before he even started.

Speaking exclusively to The Scottish Sun, Craig said he can feel the full weight of the Tartan Army backing him.

He said: “Everyone has been super supportive, we’ve managed to hit the whole target without taking a step.

“Everyone has been brilliant. I think I have been promised my weight in free beers at this point.

“The response from people has been mad, and Scotland fans have this amazing reputation when they are travelling worldwide anyway.

“I can do this knowing I have the full support of the Tartan Army and all Scotland fans travelling there just motivates me even more.”

Craig is embarking on the mammoth trip to support charity Brothers In Arms – a Scots charity aiming to reduce male suicide. Craig hopes he can use Scotland’s place in the Euros to bring fans together in the fight.

He said: “I think everyone can agree it is a prominent issue. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50, that is horrifying.

“Football is a sport that unites men across the world and the Euros is an ideal opportunity to harness that energy and get men to open up about how they are feeling.”

The kilted walker, who works as a waiter, is a keen traveller and has visited over 36 countries.

The Euros trek will take him 37 days as he strolls down to Hull before catching a ferry to Rotterdam and then walking across the Netherlands, Belgium , Luxembourg and then into Germany .

He told how he was inspired to take on the international stride after a daft comment from his pal.

Tackling male suicide

CRAIG is embarking on this journey to help tackle male suicide, the biggest killer of men under 50.

He hopes his March to Munich will inspire men to open up and help men in crisis.

In the UK, 12 men take their own lives every single day

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 years old

In Scotland, men remain almost 3 times as likely to die by suicide than women.

The average age of suicide death has been rising since 2000, and in Scotland is 48.2 years.

Recent research suggests that men are less likely to access professional mental health support than women.

Brothers in Arms is the leading charity dedicated to helping men before they reach crisis point.

The charity one-to-one support with their 'talking-and-listening' tool, which is free to use via  www.brothersinarmsscotland.co.uk/blethr/

If you need help, 24-hour support is available via Samaritans - Text SHOUT to 85258 or Call 116 123 .

He said: “I was sat on a phone call with my best mate thinking the same as thousands of other Scots, how to get to Germany .

“He then said ‘I may just walk it’ and I thought 'that is the most stupid thing I have ever heard' and the call ended there.

"But I don’t know what it was but something sat with me and I thought, that is brilliant, once I thought of the possibility of raising money for such an amazing cause, I just thought I need to do this.”

Dan Proverbs, the founder of Brothers in Arms, described Craig's effort as "inspiring" and "epic".

He said: “We are so grateful that Craig has chosen to support Brothers in Arms with his inspiring mission.

"He is quite literally 'walking the talk', and I hope that his epic walk encourages men to talk about their mental health as openly as they talk about football.

Craig Ferguson brings politics-free comedy tour to Detroit

craig ferguson scotland tour

Craig Ferguson's latest vehicle purchase reflects that, while he is Scottish by birth, he's an American by choice.

The former “Late Late Show” host is driving across the United States in a Dodge Ram 1500 for his Fancy Rascal comedy tour, set to arrive Friday at Detroit’s Music Hall.

Ferguson admits to having a “weakness” for enormous U.S. trucks. In fact, he recently asked his 2.6 million Twitter followers to vote on whether he should get an F-150 or a Ram 1500 Big Horn for the tour. The results were 51.3% for the Ford, 48.7% for the Dodge.

“I’ll tell you the truth. By the time I put the poll on Twitter, I’d already bought the Ram. It was more of an opinion poll, and I was like, ‘You guys suck! I got the Ram 1500!’ But it was a close call,” he said by phone.

Ferguson is best known for spending 2005 to 2014 on the air after "The Late Show with David Letterman" on CBS. During his "Late Late Show" tenure, he developed a reputation for turning interviews into unexpected, sometimes revealing conversations and favoring offbeat touches like his sidekicks: robot skeleton sidekick Geoff Peterson and pantomime horse Secretariat.

Ferguson’s past credits include being a punk rocker, hosting a prime-time game show (ABC’s “The Hustler”) and a Sirius XM show and writing novels, screenplays and memoirs. In 2009, the year after he became a U.S. citizen, he published a candid memoir about his journey to his adopted country, “American on Purpose: The Improbable Adventures of an Unlikely Patriot.”

With his first standup comedy tour in its early days, Ferguson would rather not talk about politics during this interview or onstage.

“ There will be some mention of what went on in the planet Earth for the last three years, but we’re keeping it light,” he said. “I’m not political at all in the act. I’m a human being. I have political opinions. Of course I do. It’s a stylistic choice.”

As for that style, he’s often been described as quirky and iconoclastic. Even within the confines of network TV, Ferguson marched to the beat of his own late-night talk drummer. In 2010, he did an experimental episode of “The Late Late Show” that dispensed with a studio audience and devoted the episode to him talking to British actor/writer Stephen Fry. At the time, then-Entertainment Weekly critic Ken Tucker called it “one of the best hours of TV I’ve seen in a while.”

The following year, Ferguson taped several shows in Paris, where he was virtually unknown, and performed irreverent bits like sliding on the floor of Versailles with actress (and metro Detroit native) Kristen Bell.

Ferguson’s approach to his current tour seems equally nonconformist. Although he’s appearing at the sort of large venues reserved for big-name performers, he is foregoing planes and tour buses and instead driving from gig to gig with his tour manager.

“Basically, I road trip with my buddy,” he said.

He jokes that his goal is to maintain his current weight, give or take 15 pounds of road-trip snacking. Asked to describe a favorite free-time activity, the self-described “aviation geek” says he always enjoys visiting aviation museums. When informed that the Yankee Air Museum, a Smithsonian-affiliated aerospace and science museum in Belleville, is about 30 miles from Music Hall, he says enthusiastically, “I’m definitely going.”

For the past three years, Ferguson says, he has coped with the pandemic the way he always does, one day at a time. He came down with COVID-19 twice, but luckily had no major complications.

“I don’t want to be controversial, but I’m against it. I’m against COVID,” he said in deadpan seriousness.

He divides his time between the United States and rural Scotland. His Twitter account is peppered with photos of various animals in bucolic Scottish country settings. Asked if he lives in a castle, Ferguson goes into a riff.

“I don’t know if you know this, but everyone in Scotland lives in a castle and we all talk like Sean Connery," he said. "If you haven't gone, you must go and have a look. It’s like everyone in Detroit has a giant-sized vehicle. Everyone in Scotland has a castle. The same thing.”

There has been talk of Ferguson launching a podcast, which he confirms, kind of.

“I have an idea to do an interview show and I’ve been talking to some people about doing it," he said. "They’re keen for me to do it and I am keen to do it, too. But it’s just, I’m a little leery because I don’t really think I do interviews, to be honest ... I’m not a journalist. I’m not a trained broadcaster. I’m just lucky in a sense that I like to talk to people and I’m interested in what they have to say.”

For now, he’s content to tour and see parts of the country like Detroit again.

“My auntie Betty, my mother’s little sister, looked after me a lot when I was a kid," he said. "… She loved American Motown. She’d lullaby me with Motown music when I was a baby.”

Ferguson acknowledges there is much interest in the United Kingdom for Detroit and, really, for the whole of America.

“I think people in the UK are fascinated by Americans," he says. "They always make these documents about, ‘Aren’t Americans bonkers?' They try and find the maddest person in America to interview. They find some guy that lives in a dumpster, that’s got a hat that says, ‘Who farted?’ on it. They say, ‘This is what everybody in America is like.' And I'm not denying there are some, but it’s not everybody.”

By the way, exactly where is he during this phone chat?

“I’m 62 miles west of Lincoln, Nebraska,” he said.

Is it flat there?

Ferguson describes the landscape as "awesome" in size and brings up the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” novel series in his unexpected, sometimes revealing way.

“There’s a torture device in it called the Total Perspective Vortex, (where) they put people in and they get to see what size they actually are in (comparison to) the universe, and people just go insane when they realize it,” he muses.

“And sometimes driving across the Midwest, I think this might be what the Total Perspective Vortex looks like.”
