On February 6, 2016, Beyoncé released " Formation " for free on the music streaming service TIDAL and its accompanying music video on her official YouTube. The focal point of the tour's main-stage was a 60 feet tall rotating cuboid, nicknamed the 'Monolith' by designers. The treadmill on the catwalk was designed to be waterproof in order to withstand unpredictable weather found in outdoor stadiums. The B-stage stores 2,000 gallons of water inside of it and takes approximately 10 minutes to fill up, which occurs without the audience even realizing.

Beyoncé Announces Renaissance World Tour

It’s her first solo tour since 2016’s Formation era.

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - JANUARY 21: Beyoncé attends the Atlantis The Royal Grand Reveal Weeken...

Beyoncé is officially back. After months of fans begging the singer to release some kind of visual accompaniment to her chart-topping seventh studio album Renaissance last July, she’s delivered on at least one aspect of album promo: a tour.

Beyoncé announced the tour on February 1st, which follows her tradition of making major announcements on the first day of Black History Month (remember her instantly iconic pregnancy announcement in 2017?) This announcement also came via a single Instagram post , this one featuring her in a crystal bodysuit sitting atop a mirrored horse, reflecting her original album imagery. The look is a nod to the disco and dance music influences of the project, which will likely be the theme of the tour.

Beyoncé’s last solo outing was the Formation Tour in 2016. She’s also nominated for nine 2023 Grammys, and if she wins four this Sunday she’ll become the most awarded artist in Grammy history.

For those hoping to snag tickets to the Renaissance, here’s everything you need to know:

When is the Renaissance Tour?

Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour will kick off in May 2023 in Europe and move to the US in July.

How can I purchase tickets to the Renaissance Tour?

After Ticketmaster was grilled by Congress following the Taylor Swift ticket debacle last fall, the site is rolling out staggered ticketing for Beyoncé’s shows. Fans can sign up for verified fan programs via Ticketmaster, the official BeyHive site, CITI and Verizon. Signing up for a verified fan entry doesn’t guarantee a ticket, but puts you on a waitlist for when they eventually go on-sale. If there are more interested fans than available tickets (which is highly likely, given the demand for a Beyoncé tour), a lottery system will be used to give verified fans access to the sale. Head to Ticketmaster for a full FAQ on how to purchase tickets.

Beyoncé's Renaissance tour: Intergalactic explosion of fun

beyonce formation tour announcement

For almost a year, Beyoncé's fans have been starved of visuals for her seventh album, Renaissance.

It's an unusual move for a star whose visual aesthetic has always been intertwined with her music.

From the bubblegum-popping, star-making video for Crazy In Love, to the multi-layered exploration of infidelity and black femininity in the visual album, Lemonade, she has always used fashion and iconography to enhance her songs.

So all eyes are on her new world tour. How will she depict Renaissance's adventurous exploration of marginalised black and queer club music on the stage?

The stakes are as high as the anticipation. This is Beyoncé's first solo tour in seven years, and her first concerts since her historic, politically-charged headline set at the 2018 Coachella festival.

So as the lights dim and giant, stadium-width video screens are filled with sky-blue imagery, there's an equal sense of excitement and expectation from an audience that includes Dua Lipa, Frank Ocean, Kris Jenner and Beyoncé's husband, Jay-Z.

What she unveils is an intergalactic explosion of eye-melting opulence... a trip inside a disco ball that encompasses 34 songs, a flying horse, multiple dance showdowns and choreographed robots, all tethered to the pulsing heartbeat of Renaissance's club grooves.

But before all that, Beyoncé wrongfoots everyone.

Mason Poole Beyoncé

She opens the show with four piano ballads from the start of her career - and they're not even the big ones like Halo or Irreplaceable.

Instead, the set starts with Dangerously In Love, a Destiny's Child song that was reworked as the title track of her first solo album, and continues with deep cuts like 1+1 and Flaws And All.

Tina Turner tribute

It's a tease, for sure, but it also works as a Vegas-style overture. Before the more demanding, choreographed numbers that follow, Beyoncé is free to walk the stage, chatting to fans and reading their signs. "It's your birthday!" she declares. "I love you!"

She also pauses to pay tribute to Tina Turner, an artist she has repeatedly called her greatest influence, after the singer's death last week.

"I want you to allow me to sing one of my favourite songs," she says, introducing a slow, gospel version Turner's River Deep, Mountain High.

"We love you, Tina," she adds, casting her eyes towards the sky.

Beyoncé announces first solo world tour since 2016

Beyoncé, drake and the revival of 90s house music, beyoncé revises renaissance album after complaints.

Before long, however, the introductions are over. The video screen shows a pair of orbiting suns and informs us that the Beyoncé we've just witnessed is no more. She's been reborn, rewired and transformed into a chrome-plated disco diva from another galaxy. An Alien Superstar.

She emerges encased in metal, and robotic arms slowly strip away her armour-plating as she performs Renaissance's declarative opener, I'm That Girl.

Getty Images Beyoncé on tour

From here, we're plunged into pop spectacle, as the star careers through the album's 16-strong tracklist and remodels some of her classic hits in its image.

Renaissance's best three-song sequence (Cuff It, Energy and Break My Soul) arrives intact, turning the Tottenham Stadium into a massive nightclub.

Arms flail and drinks are spilled as Beyoncé and her dancers cavort across a circular catwalk to the middle of the audience, with the star dressed in an iridescent David Koma bodysuit, with matching knee-high boots.

Blue Ivy appearance

The atmosphere intensifies with a stretch of harder-edged hits, including Formation and Black Parade.

Here, Beyoncé performs atop a giant silver tank, while her 11-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy, leads the dance troupe to the front of the stage.

It's only her second-ever stage appearance but she's cool as a cucumber, marching in step with the professionals as 60,000 people look on.

When the crowd bursts into applause, Beyoncé acknowledges the response with a beaming, motherly smile - a rare glimpse behind her flawless perfectionism.

Getty Images Blue Ivy on stage

As the concert segues into soul and R&B, Beyoncé shows off some impressive, jazzy vocal runs during Plastic On The Sofa.

Then she lets the audience take the reins on an ebullient Love On Top - leading them in an a capella rendition of the last four choruses, key changes and all, before declaring: "I'll have to stop you there or you'd be going all night."

But the star claims her favourite song of the set is the sweaty, hedonistic club anthem Heated, which culminates in a frenetic rap directed at her detractors.

"Sometimes I mess up the words, so y'all got to help me," she tells us, apparently unaware that everyone can see the autocue that's been feeding her the lyrics throughout the show.

That's not a criticism, though. There's a lot to remember in this jaw-dropping show, where almost every song quotes another element of Beyoncé's catalogue. The irresistible electro-funk of Virgo's Groove, for example, incorporates elements of seven other songs - including Naughty Girl and the Destiny's Child classic Say My Name.

Elsewhere, Beyoncé tips her hat to Madonna's Vogue, Kendrick Lamar's Alright, and the Jacksons' Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground).

It's a maximalist love letter to dance music that never feels forced or unwieldy.

Getty Images Beyoncé in a clam shell

The staging, too, takes the sort of more-is-more approach that's become necessary for a stadium concert.

At various points, Beyoncé appears as Botticelli's Venus in a clamshell, as an Athena riding rockets through space, as a human embodiment of a stained glass window, and as a giant bee (a nod to her nickname, Queen Bey).

There are also dancers popping out of the stage like jack-in-the-boxes, a glitterball the size of a small caravan, a phenomenal amount of glitter, and - for the finale - Beyoncé soaring around the stadium astride a giant silver horse, in a nod to Bianca Jagger at Studio 54.

It's fantastic and stupid and gleefully self-indulgent, which may disappoint people who came looking for the sort of socio-political commentary that Beyoncé delivered on her album Lemonade and the subsequent Coachella performance (Lemonade's songs are conspicuously absent from this setlist).

Getty Images Beyoncé

But there is a deeper message under the surface - one of self-acceptance, tolerance and freedom from expectations.

As the audience arrives, the video screens display what looks like a TV test signal, but is in fact the colours of the Progress Pride flag.

At the end of the show, the same screens light up with a photo of Beyoncé's mother, Tina, and her "godmother" - her late uncle Jonny, a gay man who was HIV positive and introduced Beyoncé to much of the music that features on Renaissance (as well as designing some of her early stage costumes).

In between, the show is narrated by legendary commentator Kevin JZ Prodigy, in an homage to the Ballroom subculture that originated amongst the black and Latino LGBTQ communities in New York; while Beyoncé sings about quitting your job and throwing yourself headfirst into a a life of hedonistic pleasure (something she presumably allows herself to imagine once a day, just after breakfast, before snapping into a perfectly-timed dance break).

It all adds up to a message of acceptance and joy. Joy in being yourself, joy in dancing, joy in letting go, joy in being together.

Perhaps that's why she saved the visuals for the tour: This is a record that needs to be experienced in real life, with other people.

And Beyoncé. On a spangled horse.

Beyonce's Formation World Tour Was Her Highest-Selling Yet

Beyoncé just completed the final leg of her "Formation Tour" at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey - and according to a report, its her most successful yet.

Billboard Boxscore reports that the tour took in over $256,084,556 and sold 2.2 million tickets. That outdoes the Mrs. Carter World Tour from 2013-2014, which raked in $229.7 million. It's also currently the 9th-highest-selling tour of the decade, standing only behind superstars like U2 , AC/DC and Bruce Springsteen .

Beyoncé released the music video for "Formation" to controversy because of its pro-black messaging in February, and performed the song at the Super Bowl the following day. As soon as she stepped off-stage, a commercial announced the tour, which was set to begin in Miami on April 27.

Lemonade , Bey's tour de force visual album revolving around around an empowering story of a woman persevering her husband's infidelity, premiered on HBO on April 23 before hitting Tidal and iTunes shortly after. The tour began four days later, with DJ Khaled as the opening act.

Billboard reports that two sellout shows at London's Wembley Stadium on July 2-3 brought in $15.3 million and sold 142,500 tickets, making the most successful stop on the tour. Two sellout shows at Citi Field in New York City made $11.5 million and sold 73,486, making it the highest-grossing stop in North America.

Beyoncé also gave a sneak peak at the tour with at award shows. She glided through a medley of Lemonade tracks at the VMAs , and rocked an internet-breaking performance of "Freedom" with Kendrick Lamar at the BET Awards.

Tour promoter Arthur Fogel, chairman of Live Nation’s Global Touring division, gave kudos to Beyoncé for her "rabid, committed fan base." The tour received kudos for its production value, but Bey brought it with her vocals and dancing as well.

“When everybody acknowledges the greatness of the production but, more than that, everybody is blown away by her, that’s the ultimately skill,” Fogel told Billboard . “To not only use the platform of a great production, but to rise above it as a performer and artist, that’s her incredibly unique quality.”

The success of the Formation Tour is also substantial because of Bey's new public dedication to social justice. Some critics thought that the messaging behind the music video and Super Bowl performance of "Formation" would hurt the sales of the tour, and she has received both praise and criticism for her part of the movement, but Beyoncé held her ground. She released a statement about police brutality in July after the killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, and  raised at least $82,000 for victims of the Flint water crisis by allowing ticket buyers to donate. She is also part-owner of Tidal, which  donated $1.5 million to Black Lives Matter and other organizations. All of this, while grinding out the biggest tour of her career, and creating her most ambitious release yet.

Just another day at the office for Queen Bey.

Funniest Twitter Reactions To Beyonce's Formation World Tour Announcement

Members of the Beygency were gifted with a special surprise on Super Bowl Sunday. Following the singer's jaw-dropping half time performance (sorry Coldplay, but you know it was all about Bey), she shared news of a new world tour. Yes, you heard that right! The news, of course, elicited a series of funny twitter reactions to Beyoncé's Formation tour announcement .

This is not the only surprise Beyoncé fans were given this week. The 34-year-old dropped a new single, "Formation," the day before the Super Bowl. Fans thought the surprises would continue into the half time show. More specifically, would Beyoncé announce a second pregnancy , à la her 2011 VMA performance? And though fans are probably bummed that Blue won't be getting a sibling soon (at least, not that they know of), I think it's safe to say that they're much happier with the news of a world tour. I mean, you just have to take a look at Twitter to see how excited fans are to see Queen Bey take the stage.

Will Beyoncé continue the surprises by dropping a new album this week? It's definitely possible, though the singer isn't one to repeat the same trick twice. What we can say is that people are beyond excited to see her in concert this summer. And that they're willing to sell their souls to get tickets. Don't believe me? Just look at this twitter reactions to the Formation World Tour.

No money, no problem, the gift of beyonce, take my money beyoncé.

I guess the Beygency can't count this as a tax write-off, huh?
