Packing for a weekend trip can be both exciting and daunting. Before knowing what to pack for your weekend getaway, knowing  how  to pack and what bags to use for your weekend trip is essential in first seeing how much luggage space you’re working with.

When it comes to weekend trips, there are several different types of luggage varieties to choose from, including backpacks, weekender bags, and carry-ons.

Weekender Bags & Luggage

Backpacks are versatile option for a weekend getaway because they offer hands-free convenience and the ability to easily maneuver through crowds and airports.

I will usually bring a backpack with me on any type of trip because of how versatile they are – It acts as my personal item onboard flights and doubles as a day bag for exploring around my destination. I have this luggage set from Amazon that includes a backpack, and this is the set I use the most often on my travels.

This camera backpack from Brevitē is perfect for me for weekend trips because it makes packing all my gear securely into one bag a breeze. I took this backpack with me on my solo road trip through the Southwest USA and have explored 6 National Parks with it already – and it has held up perfectly.

Weekender Bags | Weekend Trip Packing List: The Ultimate Guide for any Getaway

As you can probably guess, a weekender bag is a popular luggage option for weekend trips – hence the name! Weekender bags are bags that are soft-sided, have a top zipper, and include have both a crossbody strap and shoulder straps for easy carrying. They are meant to be large enough to carry enough clothing, toiletries, and other essentials for a few days away.

Look for a weekender bag with multiple compartments , including a separate shoe/toiletry compartment, for more organized packing. Also opt for a weekender bag that is expandable, such as the one in this luggage set , so you can adjust how much storage space you need depending on the trip.

Some weekender bags may also include a USB charging port, such as this bag , so you can continue to charge your phone while on the go during your weekend trip.

Carry On Luggage | Weekend Trip Packing List: The Ultimate Guide for any Getaway

Carry-ons are a practical and time-saving option for short trips, as they provide enough space for essentials and eliminate the need for waiting at baggage claim. They’re also the easiest to transport since they have wheels – So you won’t have to carry anything on your shoulders.

This carry-on luggage set is the one I use now for most of my travels because for under $100, it’s a great deal and includes everything I need. The backpack in this set also has straps to secure it to the wheeled luggage bag, so your luggage stays together and makes transporting everything a breeze – Not to mention, everything matches. 🙂

My other go-to carry-on suitcase is the Away Bigger Carry On bag. It’s a popular choice among travelers for a reason, and can hold a lot for how compact it is. (I traveled with just this carry-on for several different 1-week trips, and it held everything I needed!)

In addition to what luggage options to opt for when packing for your weekend trip, you will also want to consider a crossbody bag or day bag to use for exploring around your destination.

The best bags for this will strike a balance between size, durability, and convenience. Look for a bag that is spacious enough to carry your essential items for exploring during the day, but not too large and cumbersome.

Your destination may also play a role when choosing a good day bag for your weekend trip. For example, if you are traveling to a beach destination, you may want to opt for a beach tote. Or for a city weekend escape, you may want a crossbody purse that’s big enough to hold just a few essential items as you’re walking down sidewalks.

Ultimately, the best type of luggage for your weekend trip will depend on your personal preferences, your destination, the activities planned, and the amount of items you want to bring along. Each type has its own unique features and benefits, catering to different travel needs and styles.

How to Pack for a Weekend Trip

Packing carry-on only for a weekend trip or short getaway can save you time, money, and headaches. I personally try to travel with only carry-on luggage for any kind of trip, because I don’t like the potential of my luggage being lost and/or having to wait at the luggage carousel after you land.

By learning how to pack a carry on bag like a pro, you can minimize your time spent at the airport, save money on checked luggage fees, and make the most of your weekend trip.

Weekend Trip Packing Tips

Here are some essential packing tips to consider for your next weekend getaway.

Packing Cubes | Weekend Trip Packing List: The Ultimate Guide for any Getaway

Once I started using packing cubes for my travels, I never looked back. Packing cubes are great for keeping your luggage organized and maximizing space. They also help to keep your clothes and other essentials neatly separated and easy to find in your luggage.

Some packing cubes also enable you to compress your clothes, which allows you to fit more into your suitcase. This added organization and space-saving benefits make packing cubes a must-have for any traveler.

These packing cubes are the ones I currently use and love, and they have held up great. Look for packing cubes that come in a set and have the extra compression zipper included.

In addition to using packing cubes, another great way you can give yourself even more space in your luggage is by rolling your clothes.

Rolling your clothes not only gives you more space, but it also helps to prevent wrinkles and awkward fold creases.

This technique makes your clothing items a bit more maneuverable, so you can strategically fit more into your packing cubes than you would be able to by just folding.

One of the best ways to optimize the space in your suitcase for a weekend trip is to pack more versatile items. Choosing pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits will not only help you save space and keep your suitcase light, but it will also give you more outfit options for your getaway.

A good way to do this is to pack more neutral colors that will go with anything. For example, a great versatile option is a neutral sweater or cardigan – It’s a lightweight piece that can be worn over dresses, paired with jeans and a t-shirt, or even used as a cover-up for the beach or pool. It’s also something that can be dressed up and down for various occasions.

Black leggings are another great versatile clothing option – I will usually wear these on my travel days during flights and roadtrips, so I bring them with me without even needing to pack them.

It comes as no surprise that the weather at your destination will play a big part in what you pack for your weekend trip. Checking the weather ahead of time will help you to determine what essential items you need to include on your weekend trip packing list, and prevent any unwelcome surprises at your destination.

This will also help you determine how you pack your suitcase, as you will need to think about how to bring your bulkier items with you – Such as jackets and coats if you are going somewhere cold.

When you’re packing for your weekend getaway (or any trip, for that matter), it’s a good idea to also leave some room in your luggage for souvenirs or any other fun things you may want to bring home with you.

The key to ensuring there is enough space in your suitcase for souvenirs is to pack light and avoid over-packing.

Start by making a list of essential items you’ll need for your trip and stick to it. (I have a complete checklist for you in this blog post – scroll down to use mine!)

Weekend Packing List (For Any Kind of Getaway)

' src=

I love weekend getaways. They can be quite affordable, and I enjoy getting a taste of a destination I might want to revisit. Plus, it’s easier to be a bit spontaneous especially if you’re staying a little closer to home. Just book a hotel, throw a few things in a bag and you’re off! But before you take off, make sure you have everything you need using this weekend packing list.

Why you need a packing list for your weekend trip

Don’t be tempted to neglect creating a packing list for a shorter trip just because it’s shorter. It’s just as easy to forget something you’ll need for a short getaway as it is for a major international trip.

While I agonize over packing lists for longer trips (such as packing for a week in Europe ), I tend to underthink my packing list for weekend trips…which has caused problems.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve failed to check the weather forecast or think through potential activities for my weekend away and ended up at my destination unprepared.

Read my post all about how to pack for your day trip so you’re prepared for any excursions you have planned.

Now, of course, a weekend vacation packing list is not necessarily one size fits all (so to speak). There are different kinds of weekend trips.

To help you as much as possible, this post outlines a basic weekend packing list plus variations for warm weather/beach weekends, cool weather weekends, and long weekend packing lists.

Need help with your planning? Check out my post about how to plan a weekend getaway .

Basic weekend getaway packing list

Use this as the base for any weekend away packing list. See below for variations you can use to adapt your packing list for warm weather, beach weekends, cool weather, outdoorsy getaways, and long weekend trips of three to four days.

Follow my tips for packing light to help you prioritize your packing needs if you’re flying rather than driving to your weekend getaway.

Clothing

  • Two pairs of pants (I like to include a pair of dark jeans that I can dress up or down)
  • 1 outfit for a night out (dress or skirt/dressy pants with a dressy top), if applicable
  • 1 simple set of jewelry to go with everything
  • 1 pair of comfortable shoes for travel or walking. TOMS are my favorite. You can buy them here on Amazon .
  • 1 pair of dressier shoes or basic flats
  • 3 tops (including 1 dressy top or sweater for a night out)
  • Undergarments
  • Socks
  • Slippers or flip-flops (for walking around in your hotel room or making a quick trip to the ice machine down the hall). I rarely travel without my Havianas ( buy on Amazon ). And these are my favorite slippers on Amazon hands down…perfect for a quick run down the hall for ice.
  • Jacket
  • Hoodie or cardigan sweater (great for layering either indoors or outdoors)

Semi-sarcastic pro tip: checking the weather report for your destination shortly before you pack is key to packing only the things you’ll likely need and making sure you don’t forget what you’ll want to have with you.

Don’t be like me and forget to pack a swimsuit for a fall beach trip to Hilton Head Island, assuming it would be too cool to swim only to find perfect beach weather when you arrive. Yes, I’m still kicking myself about that one.

TIP:  Keep track of your packing list with  this editable travel packing list spreadsheet . Prefer pencil and paper?  Grab the  printable blank packing lists .

Toiletries and personal items

I never pack shampoo, conditioner or body wash when I stay in a hotel because I know my room will be well-stocked with these items. You can always request more from housekeeping if you need them during your stay, and I always take home my “leftovers.” They’re perfect to use on my next weekend visit to family.

And since I’m not picky about hair styling tools, I prefer to use the hotel-provided hairdryer rather than pack one. One less thing to forget.

I also save space by taking only the skin care essentials I need for a couple of days. The special treatments and masks can stay at home.

Flying with a carry-on only? Follow my tips for how to pack a toiletry bag for carry-on-only travel to make sure you don’t exceed your liquids allowance.

  • Essential skincare products
  • Sunscreen
  • Makeup
  • A few basic OTC medications like Tylenol, Pepto Bismol tablets, sleep aids, etc.
  • Dietary supplements and/or any prescription medications
  • Hair care products
  • Hair styling tools
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste/dental floss
  • Deodorant/antiperspirant

Miscellaneous items

These are those extra items I like to pack to 1) make the journey to my destination more enjoyable and 2) make my hotel stay more comfortable.

  • Book or mobile device with an app for reading e-books.
  • Snacks for the trip to your destination
  • Reusable water bottle. Check it out on Amazon .
  • Chargers for all devices (plus a spare)
  • Earbuds like this affordable set you can buy on Amazon.
  • Pillow from home (if you’re like me and sleep better with it)

Pro-tip: when traveling with a personal bed pillow, I use a colorful pillowcase (anything other than plain white) so that I can’t miss it among all the other pillows on the hotel bed and accidentally leave it behind.

Long weekend packing list option (for up to four days)

Use the basic packing list above to get you started, then add items to flesh out your wardrobe for an extra day or two. For example…

  • 1 additional “night out” outfit
  • 1 additional pair of pants (more casual or less casual depending on what else you’re packing)
  • 1 additional top

Use the packing list variations below to customize your list for the season and destination.

Cool weather/outdoorsy weekend trip packing list option

Winter weather clothing in an open suitcase packed for a weekend away

When headed off on a weekend trip in the cooler months (or perhaps higher altitudes) take the basic weekend packing list above and adjust as needed for your destination and weather, including things like:

  • Warm and/or waterproof shoes or hiking boots. Buy my favorite hiking shoes on Amazon .
  • Wool socks
  • Wool base layers
  • Warm coat
  • Scarf
  • Gloves
  • Waterproof rain jacket. I love my Columbia ( buy it on Amazon )
  • Umbrella

Warm weather/beach weekend getaway packing list option

For a weekend in warmer weather (including weekend beach vacations), use the basic packing list and adjust to include summer and beach essentials such as:

  • Swimsuit
  • Water resistant sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Sun hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sandals or water shoes
  • Rash guard. Check out this one Amazon.
  • If your hotel or resort doesn’t provide beach towels or offer them to rent (keep in mind that many accommodations don’t want you using your bathroom towel at the pool or beach), plan to bring your own. Buy your own fluffy beach towels on Amazon.

The bottom line

Weekend getaways are great for when you need a break but don’t have a lot of time or perhaps money to do that. They can also be great for last-minute trips.

But don’t let the potential last-minute nature of your weekend getaway leave you unprepared. Using a good weekend getaway packing list will ensure you don’t accidentally leave behind anything you want or need.

Weekend getaway packing list

Ultimate Weekend Packing List

So, if you’re ready to pack smart for your upcoming weekend getaway, grab yourself a hot coffee or chilled glass of wine, and let’s dive into everything you need to pack for your upcoming trip.

We start the preparation for your weekend away with your trusted bag. Generally, for a trip only lasting 1-2 days, you can get away with packing everything into one bag.

Unless you require large or specialized equipment, you should look to make your luggage as compact as possible. Whether you like the style of a duffle bag or the multi-purpose layout of a backpack, your bag should be the first place you start.

Multiple options you can consider:

  • Weekender bag

The Must-Have’s

No matter what your weekend getaway looks like, there are certain things you should always travel with. These must-haves should come with you on your trip:

  • Credit cards
  • Travel wallet

Basic List (Clothing & Shoes)

When packing for a weekend, it’s good to still have several outfits for different scenarios. You may be hiking in the afternoon but then going out for drinks in the evening.

Depending on your trip, try to bring both casual and going-out clothes. If you’re spending time outside, be sure to wear proper equipment. Sometimes, you may feel like you can hike in casual shoes rather than hiking boots or sneakers.

This clothing list gives you a good starting point for a weekend vacation:

  • 1-2 dresses
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 1 pair of comfortable shoes (such as flats)
  • 1 pair of going-out shoes

Optional Nice-to-Have

If there’s space, these accessories are great to have on hand. You may go on a separate day trip or go out to a fancy restaurant or bar without originally planning to.

Here are some optional nice-to-have items to pack if you can find the space:

  • Packing cubes

Seasonal Clothing & Accessories

What time of year it is, as well as the weather, will play a big role in the types of clothes you need to pack.

Below, we’ve listed some recommended clothing and accessories for the four seasons that you should, without a doubt, be packing, no matter what your weekend trip looks like:

  • Winter (warm hat, gloves, scarf, leggings, sweater, winter coat, boots, umbrella)
  • Fall (scarf, leggings, jacket, waterproof shoes, umbrella)
  • Spring (sunglasses, light jacket, or cardigan)
  • Summer (swimsuit, sunglasses, waterproof phone case, beach bag, beach accessories)

Accessories

For both comfort and/or pleasure, remember to pack the following accessories with you for your upcoming trip:

  • Water bottle (with optional water filter)
  • Handbag (for going out)

Electronics & Gadgets

Whether heading out for a cozy weekend in a cabin or gearing up for an all-action weekend adventure, your tech is a very important part of your trip.

Whether for entertainment, logistics, or safety, pack your tech securely, ensure you’re insured, and remember to bring your chargers.

Here are some essential gadgets and electronics you shouldn’t travel without on a weekend trip:

  • Portable battery pack or phone charger
  • iPad (with pre-downloaded movies and shows)
  • Noise-canceling headphones
  • Kindle Paperwhite (with pre-downloaded books)

While clothing you can often downsize, with a weekend trip you will largely still need to pack the same amount of toiletries as a long trip.

If anything, if you’re staying at a B&B or Airbnb, you may even need more. Airbnbs often do not provide the same amenities as some hotels, including toiletries.

Be sure to do your research, and remember to pack these essential toiletries for your trip:

  • Solid shampoo
  • Solid conditioner
  • Solid shower gel
  • Moisturizer
  • Pads/tampons

For International Weekend Getaways

Going abroad? Along with all the other essentials on this list, be sure to pack the following items for your trip.

They may seem obvious, but sometimes, with weekend getaways and last-minute trips, the speed at which everything moves can mean even the most organized of travelers misplace or forget important things:

  • Travel docs
  • Copies/scans of all important documents

Packing essential health items is often an overlooked part of a weekend trip. Because the stay is generally for a day or two maximum, it’s very easy to dismiss worst-case scenarios and feel like everything will be okay.

But whether your trip is for a night or a month, health and safety should never be overlooked. Always be prepared, and be sure to bring the following items with you:

  • Prescriptions
  • First-aid kit
  • Glasses/contacts (as needed)
  • Hand sanitizer

Weekend getaway packing list mock-up printable

Even if your trip is just overnight or for a couple of days, you still need to pack accordingly and ensure you have all the essentials and items you need for a great time away.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking it’s only a short trip, just a day or two long, so it’s okay to pack light. While you definitely need to pack less, there are still plenty of essentials and items that should be packed to ensure your trip runs smoothly.

Feel free to download our weekend packing list using the link above and use it to help you always be prepared for your next trip or any future weekend trips. Revolutionize your travel packing, and don’t forget to pack both some of your essential and desirable items.

These Gold Wings

The Ultimate Weekend Getaway Packing List

The Ultimate Weekend Getaway Packing List

Packing for a weekend getaway can be challenging because you typically don’t want to be weighed down by oversized luggage.

As flight attendants we master the art of packing for trips that last between 2 and 4 days, and we manage to fit it all into a carry-on suitcase!

Here I will share my packing tips and tricks for our weekend warriors to benefit from.

Table of Contents

Weekend Getaway Packing List

Not sure where to start? Here is a recommended packing list for a 2–4-day weekend getaway. Ultimately you may need to tweak this list if you have any specific activities planned, but we’ll get to that later.

Here is a basic packing list in the meantime.

1) Clothing

When packing clothing, less is more.

The best way to reduce the number of items you need to pack, is to be strategic about the outfits you will wear on your trip.

Don’t forget the clothing you wear the day you leave on your trip, are also “packed” so try to pick bottoms you will re-wear.

Here is what I pack for a 4-day weekend trip:

  • 3 shirts (one for each day, not counting the one you will wear when you leave for your trip).
  • 1 bottom (plus whatever bottoms you will wear when you leave).
  • Underwear for each day + 2 extras
  • 1 neutral colored bra you can re-wear (if you don’t need a bra, you can skip this one 😉).
  • Socks for each day + 2 extra pairs
  • 1 pair of pajamas
  • 1 warmer layer (sweater, sweatshirt, etc.)
  • 1 waterproof outerwear jacket
  • Bathing suit
  • 1 extra pair of shoes

Flight attendant pro tip : Always bring a bathing suit. They take up virtually no space in your bag and you just never know when you might need one.

2) Toiletries and Personal Care

When packing your toiletries and personal care items, be realistic about what you are actually going to use. If you don’t use it daily, don’t bring it.

In general here is what you need:

  • Shampoo & conditioner (you can skip this if your hotel will provide it).
  • Soap or body wash (I prefer to travel with soap because it’s one less liquid for TSA to worry about).
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Brush or comb
  • Hair products (only take what you absolutely need and leave hair masks and oils at home).
  • Moisturizers
  • Body lotion

If you can go a few days without certain personal care items, leave them at home. For example, I tend to put rosemary oil in my hair overnight, but when I travel, I leave that out of my nightly beauty routine.

3) Accessories

Keep accessories to a minimum. Think utilitarian. Your accessories should serve a purpose.

Pro tip : It helps to wear simple jewelry and wear it when you leave so you already have it on you and don’t need to pack it.

Here’s a basic list of accessories you will be glad to have:

  • Hair styling tools (a few hair ties, scrunchies, and a single claw clip should be more than enough).
  • Season appropriate hat
  • Purse or day bag

Of course if you will be attending a dressier event you may need to pack a few more accessories, but otherwise, just go for what you need to look put together and be comfortable.

4) Electronics and Entertainment

In keeping with the theme, take only the electronics you know you will use.

  • Cell phone & it’s charger
  • Tablet OR laptop (I only travel with my iPad on short trips unless it’s a work trip).

5) Other Essentials

There are a few other essentials for your weekend trip, including:

  • Any travel documents you may need, tickets, reservations, confirmation numbers.
  • Mini pharmacy ( This organizer is great for filling with small quantities of pain killers, etc.).
  • Wallet, money, IDs, credit cards
  • Travel stain remover

6) Optional Items

These are items you can take with you if you have room. Personally I always am glad I have packed these.

What to Pack for an International Weekend Getaway

If you are traveling internationally for your weekend getaway there are a few more things, you will need to pack in addition to what I listed above.

  • Travel insurance
  • International power adapters

What to Pack for a Warm Weather Weekend Trip

If you are taking a trip to the beach, or lake, there are a few other things you may want to remember to pack for your weekend getaway.

  • Beach towel
  • An additional bathing suit (because no one likes putting an already wet bathing suit back on).
  • A silk fan (I’ve never regretted bringing one of these to a warm destination).

What to Pack for a Cold Weather Weekend Trip

If you are heading somewhere cold for a cozy weekend, you may want to remember to bring the following things on your trip.

  • A warm coat (These packable puffer coats are perfect because you can also layer them).
  • Thermal base layers
  • Warm hat, headband, or earmuffs

What to Pack for an Adventure-Packed Weekend Trip

If you are going on a trip to take part in a specific type of adventure, you may need to also pack some specific gear. Unless, of course, you plan on renting your gear at your destination.

1) Ski Trip

If you are going skiing, you may want to pack the following things:

  • A ski suit (or ski pants and a sporty winter coat).
  • Skis or snowboard (unless you plan on renting them)
  • Sunscreen (snow sun burns are brutal!)
  • Don’t leave out the bathing suit! (Most ski resorts have spas to relax and soak in).

2) Alpine Hiking

If you are planning on a mini hiking trip in the Alps, or any other mountain range, you will probably need to make sure you pack these things:

  • Hiking boots
  • Hiking poles
  • A backpack for your gear
  • Tent (if you will camp)
  • Sleeping bag (some of the alpine huts still require you to bring your own).
  • Travel pillow

3) Ecological Tourism

It is becoming more and more popular to travel to unique nature areas around the world. Ecuador is particularly popular, but this could also mean going on a safari in Africa. If you are taking this type of trip you will be glad you brought these items:

  • Bug spray (the heavy-duty stuff)
  • Clothing made out of mosquito-proof fabrics (denim, wool, polyester).

No matter what type of adventure you are going on be sure to pack a first aid kit !

What to Pack for a Business Weekend Trip or a City Getaway

If you are unlucky to have to travel for work on a weekend, you might want to remember to pack these things:

  • Your laptop
  • Dress shoes
  • Any materials you need for your job

Tips for Packing Efficiently

Packing efficiently is helpful when you are going on a weekend getaway. You will most likely want to fit everything into one suitcase, and a backpack or tote.

Flight attendants are masters of this skill, so here are a few tips to help you do the same thing.

✅ Leave no space unfilled

The space inside your hiking boots is space that can be filled, with socks for example!

If you are packing a rolling suitcase, make sure to fill in those grooves at the bottom of your suitcase that are created by the handle. I always put my soap container, deodorant, chargers, and other small items in this area to create a flat surface and then add my larger items, like packing cubes.

✅ Use packing cubes

Speaking of packing cubes, compressible packing cubes help to flatten out your clothing and create more space. If you are in a pinch, you can also use large plastic zip-lock bags do squeeze the air out of your clothing.

✅ Try rolling your clothing

Though I’m not personally a fan of this method, my brother was taught to do this in the military and swears by it.

This YouTube tutorial should help you learn how to roll your clothing for efficiency.

✅ Wear what you can

Especially if you are flying it’s a good idea to wear any jackets and outerwear onto the plane, so you don’t have to pack them.

If you are going to pack jeans, consider wearing them on the day you travel, and just freshen them up with some perfume.

➡️ How do I pack for a weekend getaway without overpacking?

Make a list of everything you really need for your trip and follow it. Lay everything out that you want to pack and make sure you are really going to want/need it while you’re away. If you are about to pack something you normally wouldn’t use at home, don’t.

➡️ What type of luggage should I use for a weekend getaway

The best types of luggage are carry-on-sized rolling suitcases , a “ weekender ,” or a backpack . I personally love to travel with the backpack I’ve linked here. It has tons of handy compartments, fits perfectly into the overhead bin and is great for city travel or camping, I can pack for a whole week too!

➡️ How many outfits should you pack for a weekend trip?

No more than 4! Pack one for each day you will be on the trip. Only exceeded this if you have a special event to attend that requires you to wear something special. For example, you may need to pack a nice dress if you are planning on attending a ballet or opera on your trip.

➡️ What are some common mistakes to avoid when packing for a weekend getaway?

Packing too many outfits or pairs of shoes and not enough of the other things that will make your life easier. Leave behind the second jumper and take your umbrella instead. I also tend to believe packing your laptop is a mistake, if you have a tablet, that is all you really need.

Packing for a weekend getaway is about being strategic, packing only the things know you will wear, and making sure you remember the little things that will make your travel experience more enjoyable.

If you have any tips that weren’t mentioned, I would love to hear them in the comments!

Packing Tips for Clothes and Other Items

Close up of person reading the SmarterTravel Ultimate Packing List on their phone while packing a suitcase

When packing for a vacation the most important things to keep in mind are the length of your trip, the weather, and any non-standard clothing or gear you might need.

Your first step when packing is to decide if you’ll be checking a bag or only taking a carry-on and then curate the amount of clothing you’ll need based on that decision. Typically, you should avoid checking a bag in situations where you have a layover since the likelihood of your bag going missing goes up with every connection . You might also want to avoid checking a bag if you absolutely need items in your bag on arrival—for example, if you’re going on a cruise.

If you’re packing more minimally, focus on packing layering clothes in more neutral colors. That’s not because we don’t like fun colors and patterns; it just means that neutral-colored clothing is more versatile, so you can wear these items more than once when you’re tight on space.

How to Pack in Just a Personal Item Sized Bag

Also invest in clothing that does double duty, like multi-use wraps , crushable hats , self-cooling and heating fabrics like merino wool layers , bug-repellent clothing , wrinkle-resistant shirts, quick-drying activewear and undergarments, casual sneakers, UPF-proof clothing , and compressible jackets … just to name a few. Look toward popular athleisure brands like Lululemon , prAna , and Athleta for comfortable yet stylish travel clothing.

When curating your packing list, you should keep in mind the length of your trip and decide on quantities from there. For a shorter trip (three to five days), you can probably manage with the following: one pair of underwear and socks per day, one pair of pajamas, one to two dressier outfits, one to two activewear or athleisure outfits, one to two casual outfits, and one to two pairs of shoes. For a longer trip (over a week), you can manage with one pair of underwear and socks per day, two pairs of pajamas, three dressier outfits, three to four casual outfits, two pairs of shoes, and two activewear or athleisure outfits.

And if you’re able to do laundry on your vacation, you can probably manage with even fewer items. Just don’t forget to pack a travel laundry kit .

Scrubba Untouched Review

Also make sure to bring along accessories like a money belt, scarf or sarong (can be used for things like an airplane blanket , coverup at the beach, or to throw over your dress on a cool evening), and a collapsible tote or day bag for any extra items you might acquire on your travels. If traveling to a city or destination that is prone to pickpocketing, make sure to pack some pickpocket-proof clothing and gear .

Depending on the type of trip you’re going on, you may need to invest in some special travel gear. We’ve tested out everything from waterproof baby carriers to interchangeable heels , so you can trust our recommendations. If you’re headed out on an organized group tour , you’ll most likely get a packing list from the tour provider, which should make your trip planning easier. If not, do your research online (one tip is to look at locations on Instagram and see what people are wearing) and consult this story for other handy lists of tips.

For more active trips, make sure you have a sturdy pair of hiking boots, quick-drying clothing, a day pack, snacks, and any necessary equipment. Check out our specific packing lists for hiking trips and camping trips .

Another type of trip that you may need to pack slightly specific items for is a cruise . Make sure you pack non-standard items like seasickness remedies, formal wear, dress shoes, and your bathing suit. Beach vacations also require different items like water shoes, towels, sunscreen, and maybe even snorkel gear. Luckily for you, we also have a specific cruise packing list and a beach vacation packing list .

Lastly, you need to consider the weather. For warm-weather destinations like jungles and Caribbean islands, you can obviously skip the coats and gloves, but if you’re headed out on a ski vacation then you’ll need a whole slew of things like goggles, a neck gaiter, snow boots, and more. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with a specific Caribbean vacation packing list , a Mexico vacation packing list , and even a ski trip packing list .

10 Secrets I Learned Working in a Hotel

To help keep things organized, we love using packing cubes and/or compression sacks. They’re especially useful for when you’re traveling to multiple destinations in one trip.

Wondering how to pack all of your items? Enter the great debate of the rolling vs. folding method! While this is definitely a personal preference, we put two editors to the test to find out which method is in fact, more space-saving. Watch the video below to see the answer.

How to Pack Toiletries and Medications

Whether it’s important medication or your favorite lipstick, forgetting any type of toiletry can range from being mildly inconvenient to becoming a serious problem. For toiletries, make sure to pack your essentials, like medication, contacts, and any other items that you might not be able to purchase or replace during your travels. (Put them in your carry-on bag, not your checked suitcase.) However, if you forget items like a toothbrush or razor, you can typically call the front desk at the hotel for a spare.

We also recommend traveling with some type of a travel first-aid kit , which includes items like tweezers, first-aid ointment, bandages, travel-sized hand sanitizer, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Make sure to check TSA guidelines if you’re traveling with medication , as well as the policies and regulations at your destination.

Packing Tips for Everything Else …

Traveling without tech items like your phone, laptop, tablet, or camera can be a major bummer. For those traveling abroad, you’ll also want to remember to pack electronic adapters and converters . Other tech-related items for photographers to pack are a sturdy camera bag , backup batteries, and memory cards, as well as lens cleaner. And don’t forget smartphone essentials like a backup charger, waterproof case if you’re headed out on the water, and a phone stand or tripod for photos.

A travel packing tip we’ve learned the hard way? Travel with a copy of your passport, credit card, and bank contacts, as well as a list of medications and your emergency contacts.

If you are traveling abroad, we have an entire checklist for you, but the most important thing to note here is your passport and visas . Make sure that your passport is up to date, has as least six months of validity, and has enough blank pages for any stamps. Another tip for international travel? Give yourself plenty of time to apply for any visas that you might need and to arrange for a visit to a travel clinic if any special medications or vaccines are needed. You should also familiarize yourself with any remaining COVID-19 travel restrictions at your destination.

There are also some items that you may not think to pack, but should, like an electronic tracker , duct tape , toilet paper, a decoy wallet, or a whistle.

The 10 Best Expandable Suitcases

What to Always Pack in Your Carry-on Bag

In case you’re separated from your checked bag or other items, you should always make sure that you have your ID, wallet, house keys, medications, valuables, camera, phone, laptop, tablet, pen, cash and cards, glasses, and copy of your itinerary with you on the plane.

Other items that you might want to have handy with you include entertainment for your flight, comfort-promoting items like a blanket or pillow, as well as an empty water bottle to fill up post-security (here is a list of our favorites ), a change of clothes (just in case your luggage is lost or delayed), snacks, and gum.

If you’re looking to pack carry-on only, you guessed it: We also have a separate packing list and tips for that, as well as the best bags to use for carry-on only .

What to Pack to Stay Healthy While Traveling

The pandemic has significantly changed the way we travel and, by extension, the items we prioritize in our luggage. While many destinations have loosened or entirely lifted COVID-19 restrictions, some venues and events may still require a mask or proof of vaccination/negative COVID test to enter. Plan ahead to see if any activities on your itinerary have restrictions in place.

Sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer , while always a good idea to have on hand at the airport , have become absolute carry-on musts. Wiping down areas like your tray table, airplane seat armrest, and hotel television remote can spare you from a variety of common travel bugs.

Pro Packing Tips 1 : Packing Light

It is super important to pack light, regardless of your trip duration (weekends or a month-long trip). I carefully decide my outfits ahead of travel depending on the city or parks I am visiting, and the landmarks or attractions I am (or Salil) photographing.

It’s like this when you wake up in the morning for work and find that you have nothing to wear. I know I do, even though my closet is full of clothes.

Now, imagine if you were to pick your outfits over the weekend for the next work week, and match the purse and accessories (like scarf or jewelry), you will be so relaxed and put together in the morning!

It is the same for weekend trips. If you plan the outfits ahead of time, all you have to do on the day is just enjoy!

Here are some detailed items for a vacation packing list, and styling options for dazzling your weekend!

Favourite Travel Backpack: Overall BEST

A trip essential, this anti-theft travel backpack is our absolute favorite on road trips, long-distance getaways, and beyond. It is also carry-on approved!

Pacsafe Venturesafe 45 Litre Backpack

Best Weekender Bags: Duffel Bag for road trips

My personal favorite piece of luggage for a weekend away is a duffel bag. I am in LOVE with the Peak Design Duffel bag , which has a waterproof bottom. This makes it convenient if the bag happens to sit on a wet surface.

weekend travel kit

This duffel bag is super stylish, and it can be converted into a backpack with its removable padded top handles and padded shoulder strap. I enjoy carrying it as a duffel bag as it can sit inside the car or inside the aircraft as a carry-on.

But it’s nice to know that it has the versatility to transform into a backpack. The backpack size is 35 litres, which is perfect for a weekend away.

Peak Design bag is made up of recycled 600D nylon canvas shells, and they offer a lifetime warranty on all of its products.

Best Weekender Bags: Backpacks for long-distance trips

Salil loves to carry his backpack. And when we are traveling overseas (like in Europe), we prefer an anti-theft backpack for ease of travel, and peace of mind, knowing that our belongings are safe inside.

weekend travel kit

For a quick weekend away pack your clothing and valuables inside a 25-35 litre backpack, which is perfect for a light 2 day trip.

Pacsafe 25L daypack is made up of an anti-cut, slash-proof backpack, and its size is generous to fit all of the weekend essentials. It is lightweight, so you can also carry it around all day long while exploring and sightseeing.

Daypack 25 L: Click to view Pacsafe Daypack

During our late-fall and winter weekend trips to Europe, we carry a slightly bigger backpack (the same backpack we use for 2-week trips). A generous size is needed to carry woolens or scarves, warm socks, etc. that take up a lot of room.

Our top pick is the Pacsafe Venturesafe 45L (REI)

This backpack size is still carry-on approved as a personal item and light to carry. It opens up like a suitcase so you can store clothing and cosmetics in neatly placed packing cubes and see where everything is.

As always Pacsafe is made up of world-class anti-theft material – perfect for overnight train travels, in-flights, etc.

Ultimate Weekend Packing List

Now let’s start packing,

1 Comfortable, wear all day long shoes

I carry one pair of comfortable walking shoes. They are useful in-flight, nature trails and parks, as well as road trips. My KEEN Explore shoes are waterproof, were essentially made for hiking trails, and are super durable and comfortable to wear. Click to view my favorite walking shoes from KEEN Footwear.

If you are heading to a fancy dinner, add a pretty ballerina or kitty heels.

Heading to the beach or traveling in the summer, pack a comfy sandal or flip-flops.

Winter months call for warmer boots. Carry one pair of warm boots to wear all weekend. Click to check out this mid-length boot for winter.

1 pair of comfortable pants / jeggings/ shorts/ leggings

Wear a comfortable pair of pants – easy in and easy out. I prefer to carry my Lululemon leggings inflight or even on trails. I also paired them with flowy tops when I was visiting Vancouver on a weekend .

Here are my favorite Lululemon pants

Wandering in downtown in 2 days in Vancouver itinerary

You might also like these warm tights/leggings available on REI

Comfortable jeans aka jeggings are my second favorite. They look like skinny jeans but are stretchable and comfortable like leggings. I have been wearing American Eagle Jeggings for 8 years now.

And I tried so many brands, and keep coming back to AE – they have jeggings in sizes SHORT, REGULAR, and LONG. At 5.2 inches tall, and with a petite frame, these jeggings are perfection! View the popular jeggings from AE here

I like to change up bottoms, so I carry one of each. But you can also wear the same pants all weekend if you want.

2 – 3 t-shirts or tops

If you are traveling for the long weekend (3 days) carry 3 tops or shirts. Carry a nicer top (or even outfit) for a Saturday night out or fancy dinners.

Optional: Traveling for business or events

Carry your suit or fancy dress if you are heading for a work event or wedding over the weekend.

Don’t forget to match your accessories and purse. Only pack what you will be wearing, extra bags/purses, ties, and accessories are no good for a quick trip. Pack light, leave out the guesswork, and carry what you really want to wear!

2 pairs of socks

At a minimum carry 2 pairs of socks. If you are hiking over the weekend, opt for extra socks (add +1) and ensure they are moisture-wicking.  Click to view these amazing socks available on REI

Fresh socks and feet will keep you happy all weekend long!

2 pairs of undergarments and 1 night wear

Pack your undergarments per day, and one night wear.

1 lightweight jacket, preferably waterproof

A lightweight jacket is a must for road trips or outdoor-sy weekends. Opt for something that is waterproof so that you wear it if its rains.

Click to view my favorite rain jacket – lightweight and waterproof for all weekend trips

For Winter – Winter jacket or parka, thermal wear or long johns and scarf

My winter packing list might be a little extreme, but c’mon it makes it easy when I am all bundled up and I can run, dance, fall, and slide in the snow. First off, wear or carry a warm jacket.

Banff Winter Wonderland

Layering is essential. Carry thermal wear or long johns (1 or 2) and wear them before you venture out.

Winter accessories are essential to keep you warm and toasty. Grab a scarf, gloves, and a colorful beanie or warm cap, and you are all dolled up for the winter!

A luxury style option: Trendy belt or scarf

Pro Packing Tips 2: I like to alleviate my weekend outfits with a little pop of color or trendy accessories. Although these pieces are pricey and luxurious, there is no harm in owning 1-2 statement pieces that you can mix and match on multiple trips.

This way the cost per wear comes down, plus you get to look like a million bucks – buy investing in a piece once.

Pro Packing Tips 3: Buy a multiport charger to charge all of your electronics . Carry one and done!

Toiletry Kit : Ultimate weekend packing list

Whether I am flying or road tripping to the mountains, my toiletry kit, and makeup essentials are the same. I prefer carrying small size containers in a neatly packed cosmetic pouch.

I like the Truffle case – easy to store and is transparent. I found a cheaper version on ETSY. Check it out here

Here is what I carry, and all of my cosmetics, creams, and lotions are bought from Sephora

Travel Makeup kit

  • Moisturiser

Other Essentials: Most important is sunglasses!

Sunglasses are SUPER important. They make you look amazing, totally in vacation mode and they also provide eye protection. A MUST HAVE in my travel purse.

Coba Ruins Mexico

I love my RayBan Erika sunglasses. It is very rare that you will find me without one in my pictures. And the awesome thing is that, even if you are tired (and didn’t sleep well the night before), you will still look as dazzling and sparkling as ever!

Pro Packing Tips 4: Pick up a fancy pair of shades today!

Here are some optional items:

  • Beach mat & towel (if heading to the beach)

Don’t forget the essential documents : Weekend trip packing list

  • Hotels, tours, or attractions booking documents/emails

Weekend getaway packing essentials in today’s new normal :

As we are embarking on a new normal, here are some essential items that you must carry.

  • Face mask (if mandated or required in the state/province you live in) – Check out ETSY for face masks
  • Carry hand sanitizer , and wash your hands often
  • Tissue – Use that to open or close doors, and wipe surfaces before planning your sunglass, phone, or camera down

Before you travel, for sure, always check the individual park/town or city to see if attractions and restaurants are open. Many state parks will have precautionary measures and guidelines for visitors to follow. Check out – Recreate Responsibly guidelines here

Many attractions and landmarks are open with timed entry, whilst maintaining social distance and other precautionary measures.

How to plan a weekend trip tosomeplacenew

When you travel domestically or internationally, it is important to check any local guidelines, and rules, and pay attention to weather warnings, etc.

When in doubt, check the embassy or consulate’s official websites. Plus all federal and provincial/state parks have rules or guidelines laid out. All we have to do is ensure we follow them for our safety and for others.

14 best weekender bags for every type of traveler in 2024

Split image of a Woman wearing a stylish weekend bag on her shoulder and someone packing a trunk

Between balancing a full-time job and family duties, a quick weekend getaway is usually easier to pencil into a busy schedule than a long vacation. Embarking on short trips throughout the year is a great way to take a break from the monotony of your daily routine, but how effectively you pack may determine just how stress-free your trip is. A weekender bag, which includes zippered duffels, travel backpacks and large multi-compartment bags , can easily keep your travel essentials in one place.

To help you choose the best one for your getaway, we asked travel experts how they shop for weekender bags and rounded up some of their favorite options along with NBC Select staff picks.

Selected. Our top picks

Lo & Sons The Catalina Deluxe

Best weekender bags of 2024

We compiled expert-recommended options and NBC Select staff favorites to help you decide on the best weekender bags for your personal travel preferences.

Best weekender bag overall: Lo & Sons

Lo & sons the catalina deluxe.

Lo & Sons The Catalina Deluxe

Lo & Sons The Catalina Deluxe

The Catalina Deluxe from Lo & Sons is a frontrunner for durability, space and style. I frequently take quick weekend trips to visit family, and I can always rely on this weekender to store everything I need. It fits comfortably underneath my seat on flights or train rides, and I love that it has a separate, zippered bottom compartment to help keep my shoes and dirty clothes isolated from the rest of my packed items. It comes in various sizes, colors and fabrics, including soft and sturdy canvas, and water-resistant and eco-friendly recycled polyester. It also includes an adjustable messenger strap with removable padding, as well as a backend pass-through sleeve so it can fit comfortably on top of a suitcase.

Capacity : 40 liters (small); 49 liters (large) | Material : Canvas; 600D recycled polyester | Water-resistant : Yes (recycled polyester) | Laptop compartment : No

Best multi-purpose weekender bag: Halfday

Halfday the garment duffel.

Halfday The Garment Duffel

This duffel comes recommended by NBC Select’s associate updates editor Zoe Malin and editor James Ellis due to its durability and size. “I like that it's small enough to not make a fuss on the plane, but I can still pack at least one suit if I wanted,” Ellis says. It weighs a little over 2 pounds and has a water-resistant exterior that’s designed to withstand unpredictable weather. The duffel comes with two interior shoe pockets that fit a size-13 shoe in each, and it converts into a hanging garment compartment that holds a suit, tux or multiple dress shirts, according to the brand.

Capacity : 45 liters | Material : Oxford; Taslan polyester lining | Water-resistant : Yes | Laptop compartment : No

Best weekender bag with removable compartment: Beis

Beis the convertible weekender.

Beis The Convertible Weekender

“This bag changed my life — it’s the only weekender I can truly rely on for trips, and it sparks joy when I use it,” Malin says. She loves that it comes with a bottom compartment to keep shoes separate: “I always travel with my running sneakers, and having that dedicated compartment for them keeps their dirty soles away from my clean clothes.” The compartment is also removable if you’re a light packer, so you can convert it to a minimalist tote. Malin also likes the many interior pockets that can help safely store away her phone, wallet, passport and other essentials while traveling, as well as the removable padded laptop sleeve to save time while going through TSA. The brand also offers a mini version , which is small enough to use as a purse or work tote when you remove the bottom compartment.

Capacity : 49 liters | Material : Polyester; vegan leather trim | Water-resistant : Yes (lining) | Laptop compartment : Yes

Best affordable weekender bag: Adidas

Adidas defender 4 medium duffel bag.

Adidas Defender 4 Medium Duffel Bag

In addition to the Lo & Sons option, my partner and I use this affordable duffel from Adidas for quick overnight stays or to haul exercise clothes and fitness equipment to the gym. It doesn’t have the bells and whistles of higher-end bags, just a spacious, zip-top interior with two zippered side pockets that allow me to keep track of (and store away) smaller items like earbuds , wallets and keys. It also has a removable shoulder strap, so you can use it as both a true duffel with handles or a crossbody bag to haul heavier items.

Capacity : N/A (Dimensions: 13 inches long, 12 inches high, 24.75 inches wide) | Material : Polyester | Water-resistant : Yes | Laptop compartment : No

Best high-end weekender bag: ShortyLove

ShortyLove Friday Weekender Travel Bag

Editorial director Lauren Swanson owns this weekender in Army Green and says that “it's surprisingly spacious and lightweight.” Weighing just under 2 pounds, the bag is made from water-resistant nylon twill and has a flat, structured bottom that lets it stand upright when placed on the floor. It also has internal padding so it maintains its structure when it’s not in use, according to the brand. It comes with multiple interior slip pockets to hold your phone, keys and wallet, as well as a deep, zippered exterior pocket.

Capacity : 60 liters | Material : Nylon twill | Water-resistant : Yes | Laptop compartment : No

Best convertible weekender bag: Baboon to the Moon

baboon to the moon go-bag.

Baboon to the Moon Go-Bag

If you can’t decide between a traditional weekender bag and a travel backpack, Baboon to the Moon’s water-resistant Go-Bag solves that issue — it has a handle so you can use it as a duffel, and adjustable shoulder straps to easily convert it into a backpack. It’s also a favorite of former NBC Page Mihkaila Archer: “I’ve been telling everyone I possibly can about Baboon to the Moon — it's not super traditional luggage, but I love its wide array of unique colors and bag sizes for any type of trip.”

Capacity : 32 liters, 40 liters and 60 liters | Material : Proprietary OM Stardust Ballistic shell | Water-resistant : Yes | Laptop compartment : No

Best sustainable weekender bag: Everlane

Everlane the renew transit weekender.

Everlane The ReNew Transit Weekender

If you’re looking for an environmentally-friendly bag that’s both durable and water-resistant, Everlane’s ReNew Transit Weekender, which is highly rated with a 4.7-star average rating from over 100 reviews on the brand’s website, is made from 100% recycled polyester that comes from renewed plastic bottles. It includes an adjustable shoulder strap, a padded interior laptop sleeve, two water bottle holders and a zip pocket on the outside. It’s available in five colors, too.

Capacity : 25 liters | Material : Recycled polyester | Water-resistant : Yes | Laptop compartment : Yes

Best carry-on weekender bag: Calpak

Calpak stevyn duffel.

Calpak Stevyn Duffel

This duffel bag from Calpak, which is one of our favorite AAPI-owned businesses , is great for weekend getaways, trips to the gym or last-minute flights. It comes with a large bottom compartment for shoes or any clothes you want to keep separated, as well as interior pockets to keep smaller items like your wallet, cards and keys, organized. It has a trolley sleeve on the back side to securely attach it to your luggage, plus you can remove the shoulder strap to carry it from its handles too.

Capacity : 47 liters | Material : Polyester | Water-resistant : No | Laptop compartment : No

Best expandable weekender bag: Longchamp

Longchamp le pliage expandable travel bag.

Longchamp Le Pliage Expandable Travel Bag

A favorite of former NBC Select writer Barbara Booth for its size, versatility and sleek design, the Longchamp Le Pliage has a zipper in the middle that allows the water-resistant bag to expand in size, so she can use it for travel or at the beach or pool. For extra portability, the Le Pliage bag folds down flat and fastens with a buttoned flap, so you can easily store it in your suitcase when you travel. Additionally, it has a spacious main interior, a removable crossbody strap and plenty of interior pockets.

Capacity : 30 liters; 50 liters (when expanded) | Material : Nylon; leather trim | Water-resistant : Yes | Laptop compartment : No

Best weekender tote: L.L.Bean

L.l.bean boat and tote zip-top.

L.L.Bean Boat and Tote Zip-Top

If you prefer a one-shoulder tote bag to store your weekend trip essentials, this option from L.L.Bean comes in small, medium, large and extra-large sizes. Made from heavy-duty cotton canvas, the tote has a reinforced bottom and double-stitched seams, which makes it suitable to carry heavier items like shoes, laptops and other travel accessories (in fact, the handles are sturdy enough to hold up to 500 pounds, according to the brand). NBC Select editor Lindsay Schneider recommends this zip-top option for traveling thanks to its long durable handles and sturdy structure.

Capacity : 8 liters, 17 liters, 35 liters and 56 liters | Material : Cotton canvas | Water-resistant : No | Laptop compartment : No

Best backpack weekender: Osprey

Osprey arcane xl 22l daypack.

Osprey Arcane XL 22L Daypack

The Osprey Arcane XL Daypack comes recommended by Juliff. “At 30 liters, it’s the perfect size for a couple of nights away, and because it’s a backpack rather than a duffel, it’s easy and comfortable to carry when walking,” she says. It has a laptop compartment that fits a 15-inch laptop, and the external zip pocket is great for keeping small essentials like a passport, credit cards and phone within easy reach. Osprey also offers an “all mighty guarantee,” which means the brand will repair or replace any of its luggage if it gets damaged, for any reason, free of charge. “I’ve successfully taken them up on this offer in the past and had a seven-year-old backpack replaced after an airline tore a hole in it,” Juliff says.

Capacity : 30 liters | Material : 500D recycled polyester | Water-resistant : Yes | Laptop compartment : Yes

Best lightweight weekender bag: Dagne Dover

Dagne dover landon carryall bag.

Dagne Dover Landon Carryall Bag

Select’s managing editor Leah Ginsberg says she’s “a devotee” of the Landon Carryall Bag from Dagne Dover. It’s made from 100% premium neoprene, a lightweight, water-resistant fabric that’s insulating, shock-absorbent and flexible, according to the brand. “It has so many useful pockets and it's lightweight because of the material,” says Ginsberg, who has the small version of this bag and typically uses it as a purse. “I also always get compliments because it looks cool.”

Capacity : 5 liters, 11 liters, 18 liters, 29 liters, 35 liters | Material : Neoprene | Water-resistant : Yes | Laptop compartment : Yes (medium, large and extra-large sizes)

Best overnight weekender bag: Vera Bradley

Vera bradley large travel duffel.

Vera Bradley Large Travel Duffel

If you’re planning on embarking on an overnight trip, Vera Bradley’s 100% cotton duffle bag has a zip pocket and three slip pockets on the exterior, as well as three additional interior mesh pockets to keep smaller items organized. You can use it as a true duffel bag using its drop handles, or use the detachable shoulder strap to haul heavier items. (It comes with a shoulder pad to make it more comfortable, too.) The spacious, soft weekender is high quality and lasts for years, according to Schneider.

Capacity : 50 liters | Material : Recycled cotton | Water-resistant : No | Laptop compartment : No

Best personalizable weekender bag: Paravel

Paravel weekender.

Paravel Weekender

“The Paravel Weekender is perfect for true weekend getaways — its stylish design and high-quality construction make it a standout choice,” says Nadine Sykora, blogger and host of YouTube travel channel Hey Nadine . The weekender fits up to two days-worth of clothes and a 15-inch laptop (though it doesn’t have a dedicated laptop sleeve), according to the brand. It also comes with a removable and adjustable strap, an interior zip pocket and zip-top closure that makes it easy to unload and reload your essentials. For an additional fee, you can personalize the bag with an embroidered or hand-painted monogram or emoji.

Capacity : 28 liters | Material : Eco-friendly canvas and recycled vegan leather | Water-resistant : No | Laptop compartment : No

How we picked the best weekender bags.

A weekender bag is designed for short trips, typically taking place over a few days or a weekend. Depending on their overall dimensions, you might want to use them as a carry-on or personal item for a flight. When shopping for a quality weekender bag, experts told us to consider the following factors:

  • Size : Stick to bags with a capacity of at least 30 liters so they can comfortably fit your travel essentials, according to experts we spoke to. Bags that hold upwards of 40-50 liters may hold more, but keep in mind they’ll be harder to lug around.
  • Material : Weekenders come in many different materials including canvas, recycled polyester, nylon and leather. Water-resistant materials like nylon and neoprene are best since they provide some peace of mind when traveling outdoors, according to our experts.
  • Straps, comfort and versatility : Look for bags with strong, padded straps that aren’t going to give way when you’re carrying a heavier load. Some options transform into travel backpacks or crossbody bags, which makes it easier to carry heavier items.
  • Price : You can expect to spend between $100 to $300 on a quality weekender bag. However, “beyond that point, you’ll be paying a premium for brand recognition or aesthetic features rather than significant improvements in durability or functionality,” says travel blogger Lauren Juliff .
  • Organizational features : Consider bags with interior pockets that will keep small items in one place and exterior pockets to keep essentials like your phone and passport in-reach. You should also look for a built-in laptop sleeve or compartment to keep your tech safe and scratch-free.

What is a weekender bag and what is it used for?

Sized in between a backpack and a carry-on suitcase , a weekender is big enough to hold clothes, toiletries, shoes and other essentials. Many tend to have soft sides, zippers and multiple compartments that give you the convenience and accessibility of a backpack with the capacity of a smaller suitcase sans the bulkiness.

“For getaways lasting a night or two, the main advantage of a weekender bag is the ease at which you can pack and unpack,” Juliff says. “You don’t have to squeeze everything through the narrow entrance of a backpack when packing, and when unpacking, it’s far easier to see where everything is in a duffel.”

Practicality aside, weekender bags are a stylish alternative to basic luggage. They come in a variety of colors and materials, including nylon, faux leather, canvas and polyester. Some weekenders can even “fold flat after unpacking, so you can store them out of sight,” Juliff says. Some also sport customizable features like monograms and patterns to fit your personal style.

“I'm definitely somebody who has weekenders that go from a traditional soft duffel in a leather to a canvas duffel to larger totes that stand up on their own,” says Yolanda Edwards, founder of travel magazine Yolo Journal . She says she uses weekender bags for short trips to her house in upstate New York, but she also takes them along on planes as a personal item and in cars during road trips.

How to shop for a weekender bag

Not all weekender bags serve the same function: Your specific needs and type of travel will determine the right bag for you.

“The first thing you want to do is determine what your weekend will look like,” Sykora says. “If you're a minimalist and prefer packing light, a weekender bag can certainly work for longer trips — just make sure it's comfortable to carry, as most weekender bags aren't designed for extended periods of use.”

When shopping, our experts recommended considering the size and material of your weekender, your comfort level while using one and built-in organizational features like pockets and laptop sleeves.

The right size weekender

The size of your weekender will determine what you can (and can’t) take. Some bags are more compact, so you can easily carry it around, while roomier, pocket-filled options offer more space for storing your travel essentials.

Juliff recommends a minimum capacity of 30 liters for a weekender bag. “This should be sufficient to carry clothing, toiletries and other essentials for a short trip,” she says. Plus, “30 liters is typically well within most airlines' carry-on luggage requirements, allowing you to easily stow your bag under the seat when traveling internationally.”

If you’re an experienced traveler, a larger weekender bag may still work well for longer trips. “I traveled continuously for two years with a single 40-liter backpack and didn’t feel as though the amount of space was limiting — anything less than 40 liters and I would have struggled, though,” Juliff says. And though a smaller option may not hold all of your essentials, opting for a bigger weekender can still be limiting: “Typically, weekenders aren’t rolling bags, so you’ll need to physically carry them around,” which can result in some serious heavy lifting if you’re a chronic overpacker, according Sykora. “For most people, I would recommend a 50-liter or 60-liter suitcase or backpack for trips lasting longer than a week,” Juliff says.

Comfort and versatility

“Consider your destination, travel distance and transportation methods — like car versus public transportation — when determining the size and comfort [of your bag],” Sykora says. Padded, removable and adjustable straps are important when it comes to comfort, especially if the bag functions as both a duffel and a backpack. If you’re planning a walking-heavy trip , some weekenders can transform into crossbody bags or travel backpacks that won’t put too much pressure on one shoulder. Carrying a weekender bag with a shoulder strap isn’t ideal for long-haul trips, according to Sykora.

weekend travel kit

select A quality travel pillow makes a difference. Here's why.

While different materials will determine how your weekender bag looks, you’ll want to avoid materials that won’t hold up in certain travel conditions. If you're an outdoorsman or if you expect unpredictable weather, “you should not be getting a zippered duffel that's [made of] canvas — which is usually heavier — or any with leather details,” Edwards says. She suggested opting for a lightweight, water-resistant nylon, instead.

“Water-resistance for both the fabric and the zippers is a valuable feature if you plan on traveling in all seasons, and will keep your belongings dry in anything that isn’t a torrential downpour,” Juliff says.

Organizational features

While most weekender bags have an open, spacious interior with a few pockets to store miscellaneous items, some offer more functional compartments like laptop sleeves, separate shoe compartments and easily accessible slots for a phone, e-reader or other essentials that you need to keep in reach.

You can expect to spend anywhere between $100 to $300 for a quality weekender bag, depending on materials, brand and design, according to Juliff. “There is a noticeable difference between a $50 bag and a $400 bag in terms of quality and materials, you can both see and feel it,” Sykora says.

Higher-end bags usually come with more durable straps that can withstand wear and tear, and they may utilize premium materials such as full-grain leather or high-quality canvas, according to our experts. Bags priced on the lower-end (typically less than $100) might use more affordable materials like polyester or lower-grade leather, Juliff says. If you don’t travel often, “a more affordable option may suffice, but I always like investing in a long-lasting bag that’ll last me many years,” Sykora says.

9to5Toys Travel Kit – My favorite gear to bring on a weekend trip to NYC

weekend travel kit

On our very first edition of the new 9to5Toys Travel Kit series, we are heading to the Big Apple with our favorite weekend kit. And by we, I mean me, and this is the gear I plan on bringing with me. This will be a short and sweet trip to NYC for a few days with a more pleasure over work vibe, so I won’t need my full tech kit here, but I still want to ensure my phone is charged up and ready to go, I have favorite leather bag over my shoulder, and my passport ready to go. Head below to check out my favorite gear to bring for a weekend in the big city.

Best gear for a weekend trip to NYC

Harber london leather overnight bag, harber london tech dopp kit, nomad tracking card with find my, nomad passport wallet, twelve south airfly pro, twelve south butterfly 2-in-1 magsafe charger, sandmarc iphone 15 pro leather case, sandmarc iphone lens – macro 100mm and telephoto zoom.

You’re reading  9to5Toys Travel Kit – a new feature series where we give you a closer look at our favorite travel gear for heading off to the big city for the weekend, heading out to the country for some R&R, exploring exotic locales overseas, a day trip to the beach, or just to the park for a relaxing picnic for the afternoon.

This is a selection of my main weekend travel kit as of right now. Obviously there are a few other things – iPhone 15 Pro , keys, clothes, toiletries, sunglasses, footwear, a watch (or two), wall adapters, AirPods , MacBook, and some incidentals. I often like to carry a small traditional notebook (I still like to make hand-written to-do lists and the like) as well as some kind of portable storage device just in case (this is more for a work trip or longer trips abroad), and I’m still considering bringing my Aer sling bag for when I’m wandering around in the day time. But for the sake of this trip, let’s call this the weekender edition.

Best Travel Leather-Overnight-Bag

Well, one thing everyone is going to need for a long weekend trip is a good weekender bag. When it comes to hopping on a flight for a weekend away like I am, some folks might prefer a carry-on sized piece of luggage they can roll through the airport, or perhaps even a larger backpack, and I certainly wouldn’t blame you for that. But I tend to travel quite light (or at least compact), and really appreciate the classic duffle-style option here. A carry-on sized piece of luggage is really more of a 5-day or week-long carrier for me, so for a weekend away, a nice duffle, weekender, or, in this case, the Harber London Leather Overnight Bag is just right for my needs.

Some folks might prefer something with a dedicated MacBook compartment, and for this I recommend one of the brand’s leather MacBook backpacks, but there’s just something about this classic overnighter/weekender-style I love to carry. While there is no specific laptop compartment in the Harber London Leather Overnight Bag , it offers up enough space with some organization pockets for everything I need, clothes and everything highlighted in this post, alongside a gorgeous leather build that will last me a lifetime of trips like this, a leather luggage tag for Apple’s AirTag, a magnetic outer pocket for quick grab essentials (passport, glasses, and so on), a few internal pockets for organization, and more.

  • Removable leather Shoulder Strap
  • Luggage Strap
  • AirTag Luggage Tag
  • 42-liter capacity
  • Two internal zippered pockets
  • Magnetic outer pocket
  • Full Grain Leather

weekend travel kit

The Harber London Tech Dopp Kit is a gorgeous little carrier we detailed previously in our hands-in review. It, much like the matching Overnight bag above, delivers a wonderful full-grain leather treatment and a build that will likely be around longer than I will. There’s a couple internal pockets and a series of cable straps to organize small accessories, wall chargers, and more in what I would consider one of the most elegant examples of a small accessory case like this I have ever tested out. There’s even a nice loop for Apple Pencil and magnetic keychain too.

  • Internal pockets
  • Cable straps
  • Fabric lining
  • Large enough or A6 notebook
  • Full grain leather construction

Nomad Tracking Card Apple Find My

I have already detailed this wonderful piece of kit in both our launch coverage and my follow-up review . It is simply fantastic and a wonderful way to add some peace of mind to your travel kit. The card form-factor means it can neatly slide into your wallet, passport holder, bags of all sorts, and really just about anything – you could even slide into the back of your iPad or MacBook case for that matter. I’m not sure I’ll ever travel, or frankly ever leave my house at all, without one. Wireless MagSafe charging, flawless Apple Find My performance, and the perfect size – the Nomad Tracking Card is basically perfect.

Best Leather Passport Wallet

A complete look at this one is waiting in our recent hands-on review and there’s not much more to be said here as well – the Nomad Passport Wallet is simply a gorgeous leather passport wallet that will remain a mainstay in my travel kit for the foreseeable future. It features plenty of extra storage space for small documents and ID, a dedicated magnetic boarding pass folder (although I hope I wont have to use a paper boarding pass every again), and a nice pen holster or not, depending on the model you’re after. I love this thing and you can get an in-depth breakdown of what it’s all about in my hands-on review .

AirFly Duo Twelve South

We have been big fans of these little wireless audio adapters for years and I rarely ever fly without one. I’m really the type to need to connect to the in-flight audio, but it’s so small you might as well throw one in your kit just in case you do want to. Starting at $35 , there are a four different Twelve South AirFly models , ranging from solo listening through to the pro with longer battery life that can beam audio to two sets of headphones at once. You simply plug it in, and you can listen in to the in-flight audio, be it movies or otherwise, in a neat and elegant way.

Travel charger

The Twelve South Butterfly 2-in-1 USB-C MagSafe Charging Station has thus far been my favorite little charger for taking on the road for quick trips like this. It’s incredibly compact, coming in at roughly the size of any AirPods case, albeit in a more rounded anodized aluminum form-factor with vegan leather interior. It unfolds to reveal a MagSafe charger for your phone on one side and an Apple Watch charger on the other – you can also use the MagSafe pad for AirPods . Pair this with a dual USB-C wall charger and I can charge up everything I need for a trip like this. While some folks might prefer something with a 3-in-1 setup that can charge AirPods, iPhone, and Apple Watch, for a quick casual weekend away where I’m not going to be using the AirPods much outside of the hour and half flight, this compact little charger is ideal for me.

weekend travel kit

I have raved about SANDMARC’s Pro Leather iPhone cases for at least a couple generations now – here’s my complete hands-on review , and the series 15 model remains my personal favorite. While the more minimalist version of this case offers the same leather treatments, metal button covers, and microfiber lining, its is the Pro version with the metal cage surrounding the back camera on iPhone that really stands out for me. Functionality aside – with this case and can quickly pull out one of the brand’s lens attachments (detailed below) from my bag for photographs, and then remove them when done – I just love the way the metal array looks. As far as I’m concerned, it is a wonderful design detail even if you never decide to grab one of the brand’s lenses and something that makes this leather case stand out from all other in the category.

weekend travel kit

Not everyone is the type to want to pull a lens attachment to take pictures – it is awfully touristy looking, and to be honest I’m not really either. But wow do the pictures looking fantastic and you’ll be glad you had the zoom lens when you’re trying to capture distant landmarks and the like. There are some other great brands in this space (Moment immediately comes to mind), but consider how much loved the SANDMARC Macro 100mm for ultra close ups and the Telephoto Zoom for distant subjects, on top of the fact that I happen to adore the Leather Pro Case we just detailed, the lens attachments are an easy choice for me to at least throw in my bag for trips abroad. I sometimes will throw them in my sling back just when out and about taking a walk through my own neck of the woods.

Get a closer look at the details and what they are capable of in my reviews for the Telephoto iPhone zoom lens and the 100mm iPhone Macro Lens right here .
