The Top 10 Best Breweries in Amsterdam

Amsterdam breweries

If you’re like me you enjoy a good local beer when you’re in a new city. Luckily Amsterdam has no shortage of excellent craft breweries right in the city or nearby. I spent nearly four years in Amsterdam, and drank a hell of a lot of the beer discussed on this page. This is all written from first-hand experience (in some cases on a monthly basis).

In this post I’ve assembled a list of the 10 best breweries in Amsterdam, in no particular order. But first, let’s go through a little background of Dutch beer and going out for drinks in the Netherlands.

Dutch Macrobreweries

Other standard dutch lagers, ordering beer at a bar or restaurant , best craft beer bars in amsterdam, amsterdam breweries – frequently asked questions, a quick intro to dutch beer.

Beer and the Netherlands go hand in hand. While beer is maybe not as engrained into Dutch culture as it is in neighboring Germany, The Dutch make some of the best beer in the world and you can’t name the most important countries for beer without considering the Netherlands.

For a small country, the Netherlands exports an insane amount of beer. And that doesn’t even include the Dutch beer brands that are locally brewed in various countries. Perhaps you’ve heard of Heineken?

The Dutch conglomerate is the second largest beer producer in the world – only behind Anheuser Busch – and has breweries in numerous countries. The Heineken you drink in the US was brewed in the US. The Heineken you drink in New Zealand was brewed in New Zealand. You get the idea. Heineken is enormous.

Heineken Brewery black and white photo

Founded in 1873 in Amsterdam, the original brewery is still standing just off the Amstel River. These days no beer is made there anymore. In the old brewery is what is known as the “Heineken Experience,” sort of an interactive museum and visitor center. It’s the closest thing you’ll get to a brewery tour for Heineken.

However, one of my travel tips for visiting Amsterdam is to skip the Heineken Experience. That is unless you want to hear about how cool and hip Heineken is and how many sports they sponsor. You learn very little about the beer for 21 euros.

Heineken isn’t the only monstrosity of a beer company in the Netherlands. A few others can hold their own too. Here are some Dutch beers you’ve probably heard of that you probably didn’t realize were Dutch:

  • Amstel (Amstel Lite in the US) – Amstel is actually a bit older than Heineken but was bought out by Heineken in the 1960s. It’s still brewed under the Amstel label though.
  • Bavaria – The second largest brewery in the Netherlands is Bavaria (nothing to do with the German province). Bavaria is more popular outside Europe, with a huge presence in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. They even have a brewery in Ethiopia.
  • Grolsch – Dating back to the 1600s, Grolsch is currently owned by Japanese beer conglomerate Asahi. Grolsch is popular in the Netherlands but also widely available around the world.

All of the breweries above make a simple pale lager. There’s no Heineken IPA or Amstel toasted porter (yet?). And to a seasoned beer drinker they all taste pretty much the same, though I would say on the list above Amstel is probably the best tasting. If you’re a craft beer drinker though, you’re not going to like traditional Dutch lagers.

The Netherlands also has a lot of traditional local lagers that you’ll find all over the country. Some of the more common ones are Gulpener (especially the northern part of the Netherlands), Hertog Jan, Brand, Budels, and Jupiler (though Jupiler is actually Belgian, it’s all over the Netherlands).

These beers all taste essentially the same and they are not good. Unless you’re at a summer festival or another outdoor event looking for the cheapest beer possible, it’s best to avoid these tasteless beers.

Photo of two Gulpener glasses in Groningen

The first thing you’ll notice when you order a beer in the Netherlands is that it comes in a small glass. Beers in the Netherlands come in 250 mL pours (about 8.5 ounces). That’s just the way it is so get used to it. Some bars will offer 500 mL pours, but it’s not common.

So don’t mistakenly think you’re getting a great price for your beer. You’re actually just getting a half beer. Drinking in Amsterdam can be quite pricey. Low end beers start at 2.50 euro for a standard small pour while craft beers can be up to 5 euros.

You can equate that to 5-10 euros per beer if you come from a country with normal-sized beers. Wherever possible, it’s usually cheaper to get a 330 mL bottle.

The other thing you’ll notice about your beer is that it comes with a whole lot of head (foam). Oftentimes it will be so foamy that you won’t even get 250 mL of actual beer. In this case you’re pretty much screwed as Dutch bartenders get pretty offended if you ask them to top it up.

Why they feel the need to have so much foam in their beer is a matter of great debate. They believe it keeps the beer fresher and allows for the carbonation to properly settle. Most other countries disagree. But there’s not much you can do about it when you’re out for a drink in Amsterdam. So prepare for tiny, foamy beers.

Now let’s get to the good stuff. Without further ado, here are the top 10 breweries in Amsterdam. Almost all are available to visit at least their brewpub if not the brewery itself. Skip the traditional macrobreweries and please your taste buds with some of the best craft breweries in Europe!

Brouwerij ‘t IJ

By far the most popular craft brewery in Amsterdam is Brouwerij ‘t IJ . It’s popular because the beers are delicious and it’s located in an old windmill in east Amsterdam. There’s a little beer garden outside but it’s not enough to seat all the patrons. So get there when it opens at 2:00 if you want a table. If you can’t make it to the brewery you can find ‘t IJ beers at most bars in Amsterdam.

Beer Quality: 5/5

Just about everything that comes out of the taps at ‘t IJ is delicious. You can’t go wrong with whatever you order, but they’re most known for their IPA, which rivals any west coast American IPA.

‘t IJ is mainly a place to drink beer. They don’t offer a full menu, just beer snacks like cheese, nuts, and sausage.

Location: 4/5

Not super easy to get to from Amsterdam Central Station by public transport, but an easy bike ride or a lovely 30 minute walk on a nice day.

Ambiance: 5/5

Located right on a canal in an old windmill, ‘t IJ is what Dutch beer dreams are made of. There is a medium-sized outdoor beer garden (that probably needs to get bigger) and a few indoor tables along with a standing area bar for the colder months.

photo of the IJ brewery in Amsterdam from the outside

Brouwerij de Prael

The main brewery for Brouwerij de Prael is on the western side of town, and they’re quickly opening up brewpubs all across the Netherlands . But if you’re visiting Amsterdam you’ll likely visit their brew pub in the city center. Brouwerij de Prael makes an excellent milk stout and they’re other beers aren’t too shabby themselves. Many bars around town will also stock beer from de Prael.

Beer Quality: 4/5

De Prael’s beers are all good, some of them great (like the milk stout and the pale ale). Their IPA is average but their double IPA is excellent. You can’t go wrong with a tasting set at de Prael.

There’s a decent menu here with most of the common Dutch beer snacks as well as an array of sandwiches. Their food is solid and shouldn’t be passed up if given the chance.

Location: 5/5

De Prael is right in the heart of Amsterdam’s tourist district. There are a million things to do around the brewpub and it’s easy to stop by De Prael for a quick beer after dinner in the city center.

Ambiance: 4/5

It’s relatively basic inside the brewpub, but it’s effective. The bar is in the front and it’s quite small. But if you get a seat at the tables there will be a server. You can also see beer brewing through a large glass wall in the back of the pub.

Jopenkerk Haarlem

Just 15 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station is the small Dutch city of Haarlem, home to the Jopenkerk . Jopen is a popular craft brewery in the Netherlands and you can find it in many bars and restaurants around the country. But it won’t taste quite as good as a fresh brew from their brewpub, which is found inside an old church in the city center.

Beer Quality: 3/5

Jopen makes some good beers, but also makes some not so great beers. They’re one of the largest craft breweries in the country so they try a lot of different things. Their IPA is probably their best product.

Here you’ll find a pretty extensive menu for a brewery, complete with salads, sandwiches, burgers, and traditional Dutch beer snacks like bitterballen and croquet. Not sure what those are? Check our my guide to Dutch food culture for more info!

For Haarlem it’s a 5/5, right in the city center. But alas it’s not Amsterdam so you’ll have to take a 15 minute train to Haarlem.

Jopen is in an old church. It’s really one of the coolest places you could ever drink beer. The stained glass windows are still in tact and there’s even a large outdoor beer garden to enjoy a brew on the terrace in the summer.

inside the Jopenkerk in Haarlem

Uiltje Brewery

Another brewery in Haarlem worth a visit is Uiltje . In Dutch this means “little owl.” These guys make hands down the best beer in the Netherlands. The brewery itself is in the industrial part of Haarlem, a good way from the train station.

It’s a hip place if you want to visit, but you can also visit their pub in Haarlem city center or find their beers at craft beer bars in Haarlem and Amsterdam.

The best craft beer in the Netherlands is found at Uiltje. The head brewer lived in the US for a while and learned the tools of the trade from hipster pacific northwesterners. They still get their hops from the pacific northwest of the US, which makes their IPAs and DIPAs outstanding.

They’ll have a food truck now and then, but they don’t serve food. With how tasty their beers are you won’t even need food.

Location: 2/5

Like many American breweries, Uiltje is in an industrial zone. Lots of warehouses near the brewery, though it’s easy to reach by bike. They do, however, have their own pub in central Haarlem, should you not wish to visit industrial Haarlem.

For an industrial zone, the tap room is pretty cool. It’s cozy and even has a nice little outdoor patio to sit on. The industrial zone is totally empty on weekends so it can be quite peaceful at Uiltje.

Oedipus Brewing

One of the best craft breweries in Amsterdam to visit if you want to feel like a local is Oedipus . Located north of the IJ river, it’s accessible by ferry and a short walk. They have great burgers and a wide range of beers on tap. If you’re not visiting the brewery, finding their beer in bars around town is hit or miss.

Oedipus makes some solid beer. Nothing really stands out from the other breweries in town other than the stout, which is delicious.

Mostly known for burgers and fries, they don’t offer a full menu. But their burgers are pretty damn good.

Location: 3/5

You have to take a five minute ferry from Amsterdam Central Station then a 1.2km walk, but the brewery is in a pretty unique location. Amsterdam Noord is up and coming and other breweries are starting to pop up around Oedipus.

Oedipus is pretty hip. The brewery and taproom is in an old warehouse. There’s an outdoor beer garden and plenty of indoor seating for those rainy Dutch winters.

Brouwerij Kleiburg

Located in the far south of town near Bijlmer ArenA is Brouwerij Kleiburg . The brewery features a beautiful outdoor beer garden with live music and yard games. It’s the perfect place to grab a craft beer before an Ajax match or a concert in Bijlmer ArenA.

Opinions differ, but Kleiburg’s beer still has a bit of catching up to do. They do have some high-rated beers, so if I went again I’d go with the Porter or the barleywine.

Kleiburg has a solid offering of burgers, sandwiches, and Dutch beer snacks.

The brewery is sort of in an inconspicuous location near Ikea and a bunch of apartments. But it’s great if you’re heading to an Ajax match or you want to get away from the busy city center.

While the location is not ideal, it more than makes up for it with it’s beer garden. They have a relaxing assortment of picnic tables on mulch with some outdoor bars setup. Often there are bands playing outdoors (contrast that to the typical Dutch DJ at every venue) and it’s an all-around good time.

Beer glasses on a small table at one of the breweries in Amsterdam

Brouwerij Troost

Troost makes some quality beers and features a brewpub in the trendy Westerpark. The pub gets pretty busy, mainly with locals, but it’s worth it to wait for a beer on the terrace on a nice summer day. Troost beer is not carried by too many bars in town, so you’ll have to wait for a table to give it a try.

Troost makes some good beer, but has potential for greatness. The hazy IPA is their top rated beer (though I haven’t personally had it)

The menu at Troost is completely vegetarian. This is relatively new, but the recent reviews are excellent.

The original brewery is located in Westerpark, it’s not really well connected to the city center on public transport, but it has a great location in the middle of the happening part of the park. A walk from central station would take about 30 minutes. They have also recently opened brewpubs in the Oude West, and de Pijp (two popular neighborhoods for locals)

Ambiance: 3/5

The brewery is quite simple, but offer fabulous people watching if you get a table on the patio.

Walhalla Brewery

Oedipus’s neighbor in Amsterdam Noord gets a nod on the top 10 list too. Walhalla is a relatively new brewery, but makes some wicked good beer. The brewery is located just down the block from Oedipus in a relatively unappealing old brick warehouse building. But Walhalla has done the place up and given it a nice hipster craft beer vibe.

You won’t find a whole lot of Walhalla brews around town so you’ll have to go check out the brewery for a taste. Just be sure to check their hours online, as they have some odd ones. They’re only open Thursday through Sunday and the opening and closing time varies by day, with Friday and Saturday being a standard 2-11 opening.

Walhalla makes a lot of unique beers as well as your standard IPAs and pilsners. Be sure to try the watermelon mango sour if they have it on tap when you’re there.

You don’t really come to Walhalla for the food. Like ‘t IJ, they just offer a few bar snacks like cheese and cured sausages.

The brewery is situated in Amsterdam Noord which means you have to take a quick ferry over the IJ river and then walk/bike a little over a kilometer. Amsterdam Noord is becoming more and more popular every year though, with plenty of other things popping up here and there

Nothing says craft beer like and old industrial warehouse turned into a brewery. Inside is small and cozy but outside they have an impressive beer garden. Just gotta hope for some nice Dutch weather!

photos of a young couple outside some Amsterdam breweries

Two Chefs Brewing

The Two Chefs Brewing brewery is in a more industrial section of Amsterdam near Sloterdijk station. But you can try all their beers at their brewpub on the western side of the city center. You’ll also find their beers at various bars around town.

Two Chefs makes a really good imperial porter. At 8% it will knock you out.

They have an interesting menu at their foodbar. While they have traditional dutch beer snacks like any good brewpub, they also have more unique things like fish curry and grilled pumpkin.

The brewpub is in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in all of Amsterdam, but unfortunately sits on a not-so-great roundabout.

Small and simple, it reminds you more of a bar you used to go to in university than a brewpub

Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater

Quietly situated away on the east side of town is Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater . The brewery and brewpub is in a beautiful old building and features a nice terrace for summer drinks.

The brewery’s output is far less than the others on this list though, so if you want to try some of their beer you’ll have to pay them a visit. You probably won’t find it around town unless you’re at a craft beer bar with hundreds of beers to choose from.

Poesiat & Kater make some excellent beers. The IPA and imperial stout are fantastic.

Full disclosure I’ve never actually eaten here, so we’re going off average Google review here. They have a more eclectic menu than most brewpubs and even offer a massive steak for 65 euros.

Sort of off the beaten path, it’s near Amsterdam Muiderpoort station, so relatively easy to get to on the train. Though it’s not in a happening neighborhood, it is located on a canal so that’s something.

They’ve really made it a fantastic place to drink beer, with a beautiful beer garden and a fine interior. You could spend hours here and not even know it.

Want to try beers from all sorts of different Dutch breweries and not have to get out of your seat? Then you might be more interested in Amsterdam’s eclectic craft beer bars. There are many options for getting your thirst quenched in the city, so let’s go over some of them here.

Proeflokaal Arendsnest

Perhaps no craft beer bar in Amsterdam is more quintessentially Dutch than Proeflokaal Arendsnest . Located in the beautiful Jordaan neighborhood, it’s easy to walk to from the city center.  This little beer cafe has more than 50 Dutch beers on tap and even more in the bottle.

They also offer a special beer tasting with a beer specialist who will choose local Dutch beers for you and explain a little history about beer making in the Netherlands.

Beer Temple

Beer Temple is a small bar in the city center with an impressive selection of Dutch and American beers. One of the best things about Beer Temple is that you can get a full, normal sized pint of beer, a rare sight at bars in the Netherlands.

De Biertuin

De Biertuin – literally “The Beer Garden” – is a relatively new craft beer bar that has expanded to three locations around the city. The central location isn’t really a beer garden, as it just has a couple outdoor tables, but the east and west locations have decent little outdoor beer gardens. You can find beer from most of the breweries in this post at de Biertuin.

photo of a small bar in the Netherlands

Café Gollem

Cafe Gollem is more of a traditional Dutch beer cafe. Small, quaint, and dimly lit, this pub will make you feel like you’re drinking in your own home. Gollem has six locations around Amsterdam, each featuring a full dinner menu and an excellent selection of Dutch beers.

Beer Tasting Room in the Wildeman

Taste craft beers from the Netherlands, Belgium and beyond at Beer Tasting Room in the Wildeman . The bar is located right in the city center, so it’s an easy place to stop for a brewski between sightseeing stops. They also feature varied snack options but no proper diner menu.

A bit off the beaten tourist path by Sloterdijk Station, BRET is a popular hangout for locals to sit back and relax with a local beer after a long day at the office. I’ve been to BRET no fewer than 100 times. It’s a small bar but has a large outdoor area for nice days. While it offers mostly Dutch craft beers, it’s been known to carry random beers from New Zealand here and there.

What is the most popular beer in Amsterdam?

The most popular beer in Amsterdam is – you guessed it – Heineken. The Dutch beer behemoth is literally everywhere in the city. But you’ll also find Amstel just about everywhere any many other local Dutch beers like Brand and Grolsch.

Can you walk around with beer in Amsterdam?

Technically you cannot walk around the streets of Amsterdam with a beer. However, this rule is really only enforced in the city center near the Red Light District. And that enforcement only started in 2019 after one too many drunk British kids fell in the canals.

Anywhere else in the city and the police really don’t bat an eye. It’s common to drink in parks and public squares. Just don’t be obnoxious about it.

Is Amsterdam known for beer?

Amsterdam is not as known for beer as many German and Czech cities. But the Dutch capital is pretty synonymous with beer, especially thanks to the Heineken brewery and their massive global reach.

Is beer expensive in Amsterdam?

Yes, beer in Amsterdam is quite expensive when compared to the rest of Europe. It’s not quite as expensive as drinking out in the US or Australia, but it’s not cheap.

Menu prices are deceiving too, as Dutch beers are half-sized (see explanation above). So for 4 euros you’re only getting half the size of what you get in other European countries.

Beer is pretty cheap at supermarkets though. Dutch supermarkets usually sell craft beer by the bottle, meaning it can get a bit pricier. Some of the more popular craft beers are sold in 6-packs.

What is the oldest brewery in the Netherlands?

The Brand brewery dates back to 1340 and is the oldest known brewery in the Netherlands. Brand beer is a very popular brewery in the Netherlands, yet almost completely unknown outside the Dutch border. Brand has ventured out into more craft brewing than other old Dutch breweries and thus offers IPAs and other beer styles than just the plain old pale Dutch lager.

Amsterdam is full of excellent craft breweries that are lovely to visit on a nice day. And if it’s not a nice day that’s even more reason to sit and have some good beers. Be sure to try some Dutch food while you’re at it. Enjoy the brews!

Breweries Amsterdam Top 10

visit brewery amsterdam

Breweries Amsterdam Top 10. The craft beer scene in Amsterdam is thriving! With over 40 different breweries, it's hard to choose. We've made a selection of 10 breweries in Amsterdam that have great beers, are fun to visit, and guarantee a lot of enjoyment.

The top 10 breweries in random order

1. Oedipus brewing Based in the North of Amsterdam is Oedipus Brewery, you can recognize them easily because of their colourful beer labels. When entering the brewery, you’ll directly become happy. After a beer tasting you will feel great and probably don’t want to leave anymore.

One of their most popular beers is mannenliefde, when you translate the name it’s called ‘Man Love’. With this beer Oedipus wanted to make a statement, beer is not only fort the stereotype male which you always see in the TV commercials who are watching football and drink around the Barbecue. It’s for everybody and that message is well spread. Not only because of their great marketing campaign it’s extreme succesfull, but because it’s a great beer as well. This saison beer is now so popular that it can’t be produced anymore in their own brewery because of their high demand.

They like to experiment with a lot of different and special flavours which are not very common to use in the brewing process in Holland, but therefor not less tasty. Try the Thai Thai Tripel for instance, it’s a classic Tripel with chili and coriander! Love it! Oedipus brewing is a popular stop of Brew Bus Amsterdam you get a beer tasting and, depending on the route and schedule, a brewery tour as well.

2. Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater In Amsterdam-Oost, you'll find Poesiat & Kater. They initially brewed their beers in the tasting room at Polderweg 648. However, due to their fantastic beers and entrepreneurial owners, the brewery became too small, and they had to relocate to a different location in Amsterdam. They adopted the classic recipes from the Van Vollenhoven brewery and brought them back to life after many years. Even though the brewery itself is quite young, it means they might have some of the oldest beers in the city. Try the "Van Vollenhoven Stout," and you'll be hooked!

In addition to a tasting room, they also have a fantastic restaurant, located in an old animal shelter, making the location truly unique.

Breweries Amsterdam

3. Brouwerij Friekens

This is a hidden gem, far north in Amsterdam, you'll find Friekens Brewery. One of my all-time favorites! Brewer and owner Sid has a passion for beer, and when you taste Friekens' beers, you can truly sense it, no joke! The brewery is located in a former locker room of a soccer team, and you can still see that when you enter the brewery. Since it's not easily accessible by public transport, the best way to visit the brewery is to take the Brew Bus to this exciting place. In addition to a beer tasting, you also get an excellent brewery tour!

4. Prael Amsterdam

This is the ‘pearl of Amsterdam. The Prael is a beauty, because of an excisting beer which is the ‘parel’(pearl in English) in the south of the Netherlands they needed to change the name of the brewery. The new name de Prael might even better! Great thing about the Prael is that they want to give everybody a chance in the labor market, so people with a distance tot he labor market have a big chance to succeed when applying for a job! This means that besides a great brewery, it’s a social place as well with a great restaurant.

They say it’s the smallest brewery in Amsterdam, Krux brouwwerf is located in the east of Amsterdam, with a lot of new built houses and apartments. The building of the brewery itself is already many years old and used to be the headquarters of an old oil factory.

The beer brewed in this brewery goes directly into tanks above the bar, so fresher beer than Krux beer is not possible.

The next 5 breweries in this Top 10

6. Heineken brewery

Of course, the Heineken Experience is a "must-visit." It's incomparable to the other breweries in Amsterdam, but it's definitely worth it. Heineken is probably the most famous beer brand in the world. When you think of Amsterdam and beer, you think of Heineken. It takes you through the rich history of Heineken and gives you insight into the world of Heineken. The Heineken Experience is interactive, fun, and you also get the chance to drink the beers. Two beers are included in the ticket price, and if you book your ticket through Brew Bus Amsterdam, you even get a small discount.

7. Walhalla brewery

The brewery of the beer of the gods is located in Amsterdam North, named Walhalla Brewing. They are well known for their strong IPAs, and craft beer enthusiasts will love this place. You also get the opportunity to take the canned beers with you. One of their most famous beers is "Loki," a lightly refreshing golden IPA, to be honest, you could drink it all day long.

8. Brouwerij Troost

Troost Brewery has several breweries in Amsterdam. The brewery at the Westergas Terrein is the largest of their breweries in the city. Troost Brewery means comfort, and at Troost Brewery, you can find comfort. They have excellent beer tastings and very interesting flavors. A sustainable brewery where they use cans instead of bottles. They started as owners of various cafés in Amsterdam and found that all the regular beers they served were not really special. That's why they decided to dive into the brewery industry. They are now the largest independent brewery in Amsterdam. A very nice success story!

9. Brouwerij Breugem

In Amsterdam West, you'll find Breugem Brewery, where they give people who, in one way or another, have a distance to the job market, a chance for employment. Founder and co-owner Patrick Breugem may be the best brewer in Amsterdam. At Breugem, they like to enrich the beer culture with classic styles, and the hip Craft beer styles are also well represented. Definitely worth a visit for beer lovers!

Beer brewery

10. Brouwerij Piek

Just outside Amsterdam (Zaandam) is Piek Brewery. This brewery likes to nod to the past. "Piek" was the nickname of the predecessor of the Euro, the Dutch Guilder. Each beer style from Piek Brewery refers to a nickname of a specific Guilder banknote. For example, they have "Het Geeltje" (the Yellow) and "De Joet." Can you guess what amount the nicknames refer to? High-quality, excellent beer and special people working here. This brewery definitely belongs in this top 10 list of breweries in Amsterdam.

Brewery tour Amsterdam

The breweries are spread throughout the city and are not all easily accessible. If you want the best experience, take the Brew Bus Amsterdam. This craft beer tour takes you to 3 different breweries where you can enjoy a beer tasting and a brewery tour in one of the breweries. Sit back and relax as the driver takes you to the breweries in style and comfort. The beer guide will likely become your new best friend by the end of the tour.

Craft Beer in Amsterdam: A Hop Lover’s Guide

Craft beer in Amsterdam has been thriving over the past decade or so. With dozens of breweries and taprooms to enjoy, working your way around the city’s best beer spots is a great way to explore some of the more off-beat areas of Amsterdam .

The Netherlands has been brewing beer for centuries, but what we now know as “craft beer” only got started in the mid-1980s – and even then very slowly. It wasn’t until the early 2010s that craft beer in Amsterdam really took off, with many brewers challenging the dominance of Heineken , Brand , Amstel , Grolsch , and so on.

Exactly how many craft breweries there are currently depends on how you define them (and there’s not much consensus on that definition) but nowadays Amsterdam counts around 40-50 craft brewers to its name . In other words, there’s plenty of craft beer in Amsterdam to keep hops lovers entertained.

10 Best breweries & taprooms in Amsterdam (+ what to order)

To put this list together, we enlisted the help of beer aficionado, Giacomo Rizzi. Since he first moved to Amsterdam in 2002, Giacomo has visited every brewery and taproom in Amsterdam as well as many more further afield.

Along the way, he’s racked up a whopping 1,500 beers in Untappd ( the app for beer lovers), many of which he’s tasted several times. So we asked him what to order at each of his favorite taprooms – proost !

Beer aficionado, Giacomo Rizzi, enjoying a cold craft beer in Amsterdam.

Brouwerij ‘t IJ

Located beneath a windmill in Amsterdam Oost (east), Brouwerij ‘t IJ is an iconic name in the city’s craft beer scene. Since 1985, they’ve been brewing organic, unfiltered beers with distinctive Belgian influences.

Giacomo recommends the Columbus – a strong amber-colored ale – but the rotating seasonal beers are also worth a try. Enjoy the brews, plus some local sheep’s cheese, in their lively taproom or expansive beer garden underneath the windmill.

Two Chefs Brewing

Founded by two chefs with a love of hops, Two Chefs Brewing brings culinary flair to Amsterdam’s craft beer landscape.

Known for their hoppy, flavorful beers, the brewery’s Funky Falcon Pale Ale is a popular choice, but Giacomo’s favorite is the floral Green Bullet IPA, brewed with 6 varieties of hops. Their taproom in Amsterdam West is a cozy spot to explore a wide range of their inventive brews, with an extensive menu and regular collaborative events.

Oedipus Brewing

Bold, experimental, and colorful, Oedipus Brewing adds creative branding and a design-led touch to the Amsterdam beer scene.

Their taproom in Amsterdam Noord (north) offers a laidback, artsy vibe, where Giacomo recommends their signature Mannenliefde, a Saison brewed with lemongrass and Szechuan pepper, or the Panty Stout for a dark, malty flavor with a playful twist.

Brouwerij De Prael

Brouwerij De Prael combines great beer with a social mission, offering employment to people who face barriers in the labor market. Tucked down an alleyway in the Red Light District, their taproom is housed in a charming, old canal house.

For a true Amsterdam experience, Giacomo suggests trying the Code Blond: a light, refreshing, but above all eco-friendly blond beer that’s made using harvested rainwater. Finally, the Dutch weather put to good use.

Poesiat & Kater

Located in a beautifully restored 19th-century building in Amsterdam Oost, Poesiat & Kater serves up both contemporary beers and traditional brews from Van Vollenhoven & Co. – a nod to Amsterdam’s brewing history.

Giacomo suggests their Princesse Bier (a spiced wheat beer) as an always-popular choice, or one of Poesiat & Kater’s rotating Muuke beers for the more experimental beer lover.

Brouwerij Troost

With two locations in Amsterdam, Brouwerij Troost has built a reputation for its approachable and diverse beer selection – not to mention its fantastic burgers.

Their Westerpark brewery is located in a former gas factory building and makes an atmospheric setting for tasting their beers. The New England IPA is a standout, according to Giacomo, as is the Club Tropicana sour in summertime.

Walhalla Craft Beer

Inspired by ancient gods and myths, Walhalla Craft Beer produces bold brews with a story behind each beer. Their taproom in Amsterdam Noord offers a welcoming vibe where you can sample beers like their signature LOKI, a golden IPA with a grassy citrus aroma.

The brewery’s mythological theme runs throughout, adding a unique twist to the drinking experience.

Bird Brewery

Focused on sustainability and the natural world, Bird Brewery crafts beers (all of which are named after birds) with a commitment to eco-friendly practices.

Their nature-inspired taproom, House of Bird , is nestled in the Diemerbos forest on the city’s outskirts in Diemen. Giacomo recommends the Fuut Fieuw: a blonde, fruity, session IPA, which might just pair perfectly with a picnic in the park.

A fixture in Amsterdam’s beer scene since the 1970s, Gollem now has 5 locations in the city – all with an extensive beer list, both craft and classic. Although not a brewery, Gollem’s dedication to craft beer earns it a spot on this list.

With over 30 beers on tap, you can’t go wrong with Gollem’s ever-changing lineup of Dutch brews, especially alongside a hearty portion of Trappistenkaas (cheese made by Trappist monks). Our favorite location is the dark, cozy Café Gollem on Raamsteeg, but all their taprooms are pretty atmospheric.

Brouwerij Hoop

Located just outside Amsterdam, right next to Zaanse Schaans (worth a day trip in its own right), Brouwerij Hoop focuses on quality and craftsmanship. Known for its contemporary beer styles, Hoop brews everything from IPAs to wheat beers.

Amsterdam Craft Beer Guide: The Best Local Breweries and Craft Beer Bars

  • Last Updated February 27, 2023
  • Netherlands , Europe

The Netherlands can often be overlooked as a great beer-producing nation, with serious aficionados instead looking towards its neighbours, Belgium and Germany, for their fix of hoppy goodness. It doesn’t help that the brewing giants of Heineken and Amstel cast a long shadow over Amsterdam, with most of the brown cafes and tourist-filled drinking spots in the city centre serving up these rather bland lagers with a heavy head of foam rather than craft beer.

However, hidden among the network of waterways and the rabbit warren of higgledy-piggledy streets is a burgeoning craft beer scene. There are new, cool and contemporary micro-breweries cropping up all the time, everywhere from canal-side hangouts to minimalist industrial spaces. With that in mind, on my recent trip to Amsterdam, I decided to buckle down and do some hard ‘research’ into the city’s best breweries and craft beer bars.

The Best Breweries & Tap Rooms in Amsterdam

Brouwerij ‘t ij.

Brouwerij ‘t IJ is hard to miss: it sits in the shadow of Amsterdam’s iconic De Gooyer windmill in a former municipal bath house with a large, bustling terrace where beer lovers sit and sup their brews in the sun. Opened in 1985 and named after the eponymous waterway, the  IJ Brewery  was a trailblazer in the Netherland’s microbrewing scene and has gone on to become one of the city’s most beloved brewers. The cosy taproom is only open from 2 – 8 pm but it is a lovely setting to sample any of their 7 standard beers including an IPA;  Zatte, a Belgian blonde; IJwit, a full-bodied wheat beer; and Struis, a rather strong stout. I recommended buying a beer flight – the barman will line them up from lowest abv to strongest (the Colombus comes in at an eye-watering 9%) – and sampling them all.

Where : Zeeburgerpad 55 Opening Times : Daily 2pm – 8pm.

Brouwerij De Prael

Amsterdam’s Red Light District isn’t all stag parties and neon-drenched sleaze, hidden away in one of the oldest parts of the city is  De Prael  Brewery’s wonderful tasting room and restaurant. I only found it after I stumbled across their bottle shop on Oudezijds Voorburgwal and had the foresight to ask if they had a bar. I’m glad that I did. The brewery first opened its doors in 2002 and has gone on to become one of the city’s most popular, offering 11 different brews as standard (with the occasional special edition seasonal beer) from the ever-popular Bitterblonde and I.P.A to the more out there 11.5% Quadrupel. While the beer is very good, the real star is the cosy and welcoming taproom with its tiled bar, retro lighting and cool, vintage furniture.

If you fancy getting out of the city centre and visiting the main brewery, their huge site in Houthavens has a wonderful, modern brewery tap with plenty of comfortable outdoor seating.

Butcher’s Tears

Butcher’s Tears  is one of the newest, and hippest, additions to Amsterdam’s microbrewing scene but has quickly become a firm favourite with the city’s residents. It’s secluded location on an edgy industrial estate in the Zuid neighbourhood only adds to the appeal, with everyone from hipsters to pensioners stopping by to sip a beer in the minimalist yet stylish tap room. Like Oedipus, these guys like to brew on the experimental side. Although you can guarantee that they will have a standard IPA or Stout on tap, they also like to brew concoctions such as  So What  – a salt and vinegar ale – and  Philomela  – a farmhouse liquorice stout.

Where : Karperweg 45 Opening Times : Weds & Thurs 4pm – 9pm; Fri & Sat 4pm – 11pm; Sun 2pm – 7pm; Closed Monday and Tuesday.

oedipus brewery in Amsterdam

Oedipus’ beer can be found all over Amsterdam, but to visit their cool and funky brewery and tap room you will have to go a little out of your way, heading across the IJ to Amsterdam Noord. Started by four friends who like their beer to be more on the experimental side,  Oedipus  has won over legions of craft beer fans thanks to serving to strange creations such as Thai Thai (a sweet, spicy beer tripel brewed using Thai ingredients) and Mannenliefde (a lemongrass and Szechuan pepper Saison).

Bierfabriek

Bierfabriek, literally meaning Beer Factory, is a huge, warehouse-style space just minutes walk from Oudezijds Voorburgwal with a set of gleaming, copper brewing tanks acting as its centrepiece. In terms of a brewery,  Bierfabriek  is fairly small scale with only two beers brewed onsite; ROSSO (a red ale) and NERO (a dark porter). They also serve PUUR, an unfiltered pilsner specifically brewed by them by small Dutch brewery, Alfa. However, what they lack in choice, they make up for with both the venue itself and atmosphere. They offer tap tables, meaning that you can pour yourself a beer without having to head to the bar, and a small yet perfectly formed bar menu consisting of typical Dutch pub snacks like sausage or bitterballen and their famous slow-roasted chicken.

Where : Nes 67 Opening Times : Mon to Thurs 3pm – 1am; Fri 3pm – 2am; Sat 1pm – 2am; Sun 1pm – 1am.

Bierfabriek in Amsterdam

Set up by Aart van Bergen, a local homebrewer that has since made his passion into a business, Walhalla is one of the newest breweries to pop up in Amsterdam’s prolific beer scene. Drawing inspiration from all manner of ancient religions and mythologies, they have such divine offerings as Loki, a stunning golden IPA, and Osiris, a Belgian Saison. Their brewery taproom, a cosy little spot hidden away in the eastern side of Noord, is open Friday to Sunday.

Where : Spijkerkade 10, Amsterdam Noord Opening Times : Fri 4pm – 11pm; Sat 2pm – 11pm; Sun 2pm – 8pm.

Brouwerij Troost

The vibrant De Pijp neighbourhood is a pretty cool place to wander around. Brimming with kitsch shops, awesome brunch spots (I’m looking at you  Bakers & Roasters  and C offee & Coconuts ) and oozing beatnik charm, its only fitting that it has a good craft beer bar to satisfy the hipster locals. Enter  Brouwerij Troost ; a former monastery turned brewery and taproom on Cornelis Troostplein. They’ve now opened 3 more brewpubs in  Westergas,  Oost and Oud West but the De Pijp location is the original.

Where : Cornelis Troostplein 21 Opening Times : Mon to Thurs 4pm – 12am; Fri 4pm – 3am; Sat & Sun 2pm – 3am.

The Bruut brewery café isn’t the easiest to find. Hidden away in the Insulinde Huisje on the Cruquius Island, it took me a 15-minute tram ride and another 15 minutes of walking to reach but it was certainly worth the effort. The building in which the brewery is housed has an interesting history in its own right; Huisje Insulinde, served as the headquarters for the Insulinde Oil Company since 1913 and was left in a dilapidated state until the owners of Bruut refurbished it to its former glory, forming an impressive backdrop for their nano-brewery brewery & bar.

Sander and Ward try to distinguish themselves from Amsterdam’s other breweries by creating relatively dry blondes that are simultaneously traditional, yet enriched with new tastes and trends of modern brewing. In addition to this, they try to brew in a sustainable way. Each beer is brewed without additives and with organically grown grains that are sourced from local farmers. There are also plans to go completely carbon neutral, with the brewery producing all of its own energy.

Where : Cruquiusweg 83 D Opening Times : Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu 3pm – 12am; Fri 3pm – 1am; Sat 2pm – 1am; Sun 2pm – 12am

The Best Craft Beer Bars & Pubs in Amsterdam

Proeflokaal arendsnest.

Walking down the beautiful, grand Herengracht canal you could be forgiven for walking straight past Proeflokaal Arendsnest, mistaking it for any other of the city’s brown cafés, or  bruine kroeg . However, This place is a little different. Yes, it has the mahogany walls and waistcoat clad bartenders that are associated with these ‘ gezellig’  drinking spots but in Proeflokaal Arendsnest, or ‘tasting room’, you’ll find over 50 Dutch beers on tap with the knowledgeable staff willing to talk you through each and every one of them.

Where : Herengracht 90. Opening Times : Sunday to Thurs 12pm – 12am; Fri & Sat 12pm – 2am.

The Bar by Gebrouwen door Vrouwen

Gebrouwen door Vrouwen (Brewed by Women) began as a hobby for two beer-loving Amsterdam sisters, Tessel and Do. They started brewing beer in 2013, at home in their kitchen armed with just a 35-litre pan. Since then, the brewery has expanded significantly to the point that they have opened a brewery near Westerpark where they constantly produce some of the most interesting beers that the city has to offer; Their Gin Weizen is a pale, wheat beer brewed with gin spices and their Ginger Gold is a light pale ale with a spicy ginger twist. Even their core blonde beers come brewed with either elderflower or a hint of strawberry.

Although the brewery doesn’t yet have an on-site taproom, all of their brews can be found at their new, intimate bar on Jan Pieter Heijestraat in Amsterdam Oud-West. There are 12 taps on offer and a lovely sun terrace outside.

Where : Jan Pieter Heijestraat 119D. Opening Times : Mon to Thurs 3pm – 1am; Fri & Sat 12pm – 3am; Sun 12pm – 1am.

In de Wildeman

The building in which In De Wildeman is located has a long history with booze. It housed a distillery from as far back as 1690 and even today it manages to retain much of its old-world charm; It’s dark, dingy and wood-panelled. In other words, the perfect drinking spot. Its location close to the city centre means the clientele is a good mix of locals and tourists, all crowding into this cosy bar to sample some of the 200 bottles or 20 taps on offer. While the focus is on local Dutch brews and Belgian beers, they have a good selection of international ales too.

Where : Kolksteeg   3 Opening Times : Mon to Thurs 12pm – 1am; Fri & Sat 12pm – 2am; Closed Sundays.

I went to 3 out of your selection when I visited Amsterdam earlier in the year – although I unfortunately don’t like beer, but my other half does and I love trying to find him amazing places like these. Good to know there are still some more to try if we go back!

Best Craft Breweries In Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Two beers from Walhalla Craft Beer

Thanks to the many excellent independent breweries based in the city, finding tasty craft beer in Amsterdam is rarely difficult. These local breweries often feature on-site tasting rooms, where they serve their latest and greatest brews on draft.

Brouwerij 't ij.

Brouwerij ’t IJ serves Dutch beer brewed on-site

Brouwerij ’t IJ stands underneath the tallest windmill in Amsterdam and stamps its beers with labels that bear this mammoth machine’s likeness. As it launched in the mid-1980s, it ranks among the oldest craft breweries in the Netherlands and has created many outstanding brews over the years, including eight signature beers that are exceptionally popular in Amsterdam. Aside from its standard selection, Brouwerij ’t IJ regularly produces special seasonal beers, like its dark Autumnal IJbok or fruity springtime Paasij, which are only available for limited periods of time. Brouwerij ’t IJ offers guided tours around its brewing facilities and has an on-site taproom with an expansive canal-side terrace.

Butcher's Tears

IMG_9643

Butcher’s Tears moved into an old canal-side warehouse in Amsterdam-Zuid back in the mid-2010s and then, turned this rustic industrial space into an innovative brewery complete with an on-site minimalistic taproom. Since then, they have employed their brewing expertise to create line after line of tasty craft beers, ranging from well-balanced IPAs to barrel-aged dark ales. The brewery aims to ‘enrich beer culture’ by drawing inspiration from historical brewing techniques while experimenting with new ideas and often releases inventive modern brews based on classic recipes. Butcher’s Tears regularly organises events inside its taproom including live concerts with local musicians, movie nights and beer release parties.

Oedipus Brewing

Bar, European

Oedipus was created by four friends who were united by their love for beer | © Oedipus / Annelore van Herwijnen

Oedipus Brewery was founded by four friends with a love of beer from Amsterdam, who were eager to shake up the city’s brewing scene by releasing their tasty, creative brews onto the world. Since launching in the early 2010s, Oedipus has created many different styles of beer, which are based on classic brews from Europe and North America. Many of their colourful concoctions are laced with zesty ingredients like mango, lemongrass or chilli peppers, which add subtle undertones to otherwise familiar beers. These well-balanced beers are available on draft inside Oedipus’ headquarters in Amsterdam-Noord, which welcomes visitors from Thursday to Sunday every week.

Brouwerij de Prael

This difficult-to-spot brewery is located within the hustle-and-bustle of Amsterdam’s Red Light District and features a surprisingly spacious brewpub that serves beer, bar snacks and classic Dutch meals. Whereas other craft breweries in Amsterdam tend to lean towards more experimental methods, de Prael relies on time-honed recipes and makes many traditional brews that originated in the Netherlands or elsewhere in western Europe. It is possible to join guided tours through the brewery to discover more about its history, mission and outstanding beers.

Brouwerij Troost

2017-09-07-PHOTO-00000817

Back in 2014, Brouwerij Troost converted an old Art Deco-style monastery in de Pijp into a modern brewery, taproom and restaurant and began brewing 100,000-litre batches of beer inside this monumental location. In order to fulfil demands for their tasty craft beer, Troost has since established two other breweries in Amsterdam, as well as a dedicated brewpub that keeps most of their creations on tap. The brewery’s first location still welcomes beer lovers throughout the week and serves delicious pub grub alongside its extensive drinks menu. Although Troost likes to experiment with their brews and regularly releases adventurous blends, they also make many classic beers, ranging from smooth golden pilsners to low-alcohol IPAs.

De Bekeerde Suster

BEER BREWER IN THE CAFE DE BEKEERDE SUSTER NEAR NIEUWMARKT, AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS

This charming micro-brewery, bar and restaurant stands on the foundations of a Medieval monastery that once accommodated an order of religious women known as de Bekeerde Suster (the Converted Sisters). This sisterhood was founded in 1450 in order to protect vulnerable women from poverty and hardships related to city life. To generate additional funds for their mission, the nuns brewed beers inside their monastery and sold their potent creations to Amsterdam’s gentry. Although the sisterhood has long since disbanded, the current owners of de Bekeerded Suster honour their memory by embracing traditional craftsmanship and brewing tasty old-school Dutch beers.

Walhalla Craft Beer

Bar, Craft Ale Bar, Contemporary

bar noord

Walhalla draws inspiration from ancient religion to brew its beers and names its creations after powerful primordial deities and other lesser spirits from international folklore. For instance, the brewery’s devilishly tasty golden IPA bears the name Loki in honour of the Norse god of mischief, whereas its potent red-tinged American Ambers was christened after Ares in tribute to the deity’s fiery temperament. Most of Walhalla’s divine brews are available on draft inside its taproom, which admits congregations of beer lovers from Friday to Sunday every week.

The top 5 Amsterdam breweries you should really visit

Chandra melo.

visit brewery amsterdam

Heineken, who hasn’t heard about it? This well-known beer brand once started as a small family brewery in Amsterdam and has since become one of the largest beer brands in the world. But Amsterdam has many other nice beers you could try and lovely breweries that you should definitely visit.

In this blog you can read all about the best beer breweries in Amsterdam to make your citytrip complete. Because what is a citytrip without a nice and cold beer?

1. Brouwerij 't IJ

This list starts with the oldest existing brewery in Amsterdam: Brouwerij 't IJ . Brouwerij 't IJ has been brewing Amsterdam beers since 1985. You can taste a typical Zatte, Natte or IJwit at one of the two tasting rooms in Amsterdam.

The oldest tasting room, De Molen , is located in an old bath house underneath the largest windmill in Amsterdam. At this location the beer is brewed. You can take a look at the process through the large glass wall that separates the bar from the brewery. At this location, it is possible to take a guided tour on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. This tasting room is located in the middle of the beautiful Amsterdam Vondelpark. Enjoy your well-deserved IJ-beer on the cheerful, blue terrace as a break during your walk through the popular park.

2. Brouwerij Troost

The first beer of Brouwerij Troost was brewed in a former monastery in De Pijp in 2014. Since then the company has grown very fast . Meanwhile, Brouwerij Troost can call itself the largest independent brewery in Amsterdam.

The Troost beers can be tasted at three locations throughout Amsterdam: De Pijp, Westergas and Oud West. If you haven't tried these beers yet, it's certainly worthwhile to visit one of the tasting rooms. At Westergas you'll find yourself in a large but homely room where you can watch the brewing process through a big glass wall. If you feel more like going to a cosy spot, then Oud West is the bar for you. Finally, De Pijp is a perfect combination of both: cosy and with a view on the brewing process. In addition to drinking beer, you can also enjoy a delicious meal in all the brewpubs of Troost; from hamburgers to salads and from nachos to bitterballen. There is something for everyone.

The fourth brewery on this list, Oedipus , has its first physical location since 2015 after starting in 2009. In this Amsterdam Noord location, located in an industrial warehouse, you can enjoy one of the delicious Oedibrews every Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday while enjoying great live music. With beer names like Swingers, Thai Thai and Mannenliefde and plenty of cheerful colours, it is a recipe to be happy. Here you can enjoy the brewing process at the same time as drinking your beer at the bar. If you happen to be in the area on a Friday, you should definitely stop by for Fresh Beer Friday, where you can get your beer straight from the assembly line for just €3.00. It can't get any fresher!

4. Poesiat & Kater

Since 2017 Poesiat & Kater has started brewing their own special brews alongside the Van Vollenhoven beers. The official story of the Van Vollenhoven beers starts in 1733 with the opening of the brewery 'De Gekroonde Valk'. In 1791 the brewery was named after its new owner: Jan Messchert van Vollenhoven. This was the start of the famous Dutch Van Vollenhoven beers. After the closure of this brewery the popular beer was lost and Poesiat & Kater decided to revive the beers by adding it to their own assortiment. Nowadays, on the Polderweg in Amsterdam East, you can again enjoy this old beer or one of the other delicious brews every day on the huge terrace or inside. Whenever you feel unable to choose, you can order a pitcher and taste 6 different beers of this brewery. It is certainly a place worth a visit and a great place to take a break from your busy day in Amsterdam.

5. Gebrouwen door Vrouwen

In 2013, two sisters from Amsterdam started a new hobby at home: brewing beer. This got out of hand and resulted in the brand Gebrouwen door Vrouwen (Brewed by Women). Since March 2019 they can call themselves the proud owners of their first bar in Amsterdam Oud-West. The cozy interior provides a homely feeling which immediately makes you feel like playing Monopoly all night. If you're here, don't forget to order one of the many delicious snacks. These get a lot of praise from guests and are highly recommended! Don't feel like getting a new beer at the bar every time? Then just order a table-tap and enjoy your own barrel at the table together with your friends or colleagues. You can’t wish for a better evening, right?

Heineken Experience

To round off this blog nicely a little more information about the Heineken Experience can't be missed. The Heineken Experience is now a museum, but used to be the location of the very first Heineken brewery. You can follow a tour where you’ll learn about the brewing process, the partners and the origin of Heineken and finish with a nice cold (and free) beer. Not really comparable to the other cozy breweries on this list, but certainly worth a visit.

6 Best Breweries and Beer Tastings in Amsterdam

Scouting out the best beers in Amsterdam? The Dutch capital has an incredibly cool beer scene so if you’re visiting the city, make sure to sample some local brews at Amsterdam’s coolest beer spots and beer-making factories. From taprooms, independent craft breweries to contemporary microbreweries, Amsterdam has some of the best experiences for beer aficionados in western Europe. Want to check them out? Here are the best breweries and beer tastings in Amsterdam…

Brouwerij ’t IJ

One of our favourite beer spots in the city is Brouwerij ’t IJ. This modern brewery is located next to the De Gooyer windmill in Amsterdam Oost. This awesome place brews its own organic brews on-site and offers guided tours and tastings. Specializing in blonde and dark beers, Brouwerij ’t IJ is definitely one of the best beer tasting spots in the city - it also crafts seasonal beers along with its staple selection. Boasting a taproom on a large outdoor terrace, you can enjoy the full selection of beers on tap in the summer.

The 20 minute brewery tour is affordable for backpackers costing €6.50 per person which includes a beer of your choice.

Butcher’s Tears

Looking for an off-the-beaten-track beer spot? Butcher’s Tears is a small canal-side brewery and taproom in Amsterdam-Zuid that creates awesome hand-crafted beers. From pale ales, pilsners and APA’s, the tasting room here is a hotspot for locals. You can also get a look inside the brewery where all the magic happens. With good music and live bands, enjoy your beers with friends in a cool, rustic atmosphere. This is a real hidden gem in Amsterdam and a hip place for beer lovers to hang out.

Bierfabriek

This is one of our favourite places in Amsterdam for good food and beer. Bierfabriek is a brewery and restaurant in a contemporary, industrial space. When you’ve been shown to your table, look up and you’ll be able to see the exposed silver pipes on the ceiling. Bierfabriek brews its own beers in a crafty way right in the middle of the restaurant which makes the drinking experience even more fun.

Order the free range, charcoal grilled, chicken - the special from the menu. It’s so juicy and tender and complements the beer perfectly. You can draft the beer yourself from the private tap tables before tucking into your meat.

Brouwerij Troost

Brouwerij Troost has three awesome locations in Amsterdam and we’d recommend all three to beer lovers. The original brewery is situated in De Pijp inside a former monastery. This is the branch where they experiment and develop new or special edition beers. The second is located in Westergras and is a brewery, brewpub and shop in one (not only do they brew their own beer here, but also their own lemonade). Here, they brew bigger quantities of beers like Pilsner, Weizen, I.P.A. and Amber Ale. On the roof of the Westergras venue, they host live Jazz nights every Wednesday. The third location is in Oud West, the newest of the Brouwerij Troost family, also housing its own brewery where you can taste all the beers straight from the tap. Each location has its own brewpub.

Walhalla Craft Beer

If you like inventive, experimental brews, then make Walhalla your first stop in Amsterdam. This microbrewery and taproom “brews the gods’ favorite ales” in the North of Amsterdam - that’s its punchy slogan. The beer is always flowing here, the music is always pumping and there’s a good vibe whatever time of day. This place has a constantly changing beer selection on draft as well as cool bottled or canned brews. A favourite amongst Amsterdam locals, the beers here are good quality, thirst-quenching and unique! So if you’re looking to try some fragrant IPA’s, powerful barley wine or well rounded ales, this is your place.

Oedipus Brewing

Feeling thirsty? Oedipus Brewing only uses the freshest ingredients in its beers. Every Friday you can pop in to their ‘FreshBeerFriday’ event and make the most of €3 bottled beers in the tap room from 4pm - 8pm. Not in the city on a Friday? No worries, head over any time for beer tastings, beer dinners and beer tours. You can also visit the tap room every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the beers on draft and make the most of 14 rotating taps. You’ll also get to see the brewery. There’s always some live music going on in the tap room so it’s a super cool experience.

Brouwerij ‘t IJ: Tips for visiting Amsterdam’s brewery next to a windmill

November 22, 2021 by Karen Turner Leave a Comment

One of my favorite places to bring friends visiting Amsterdam is Brouwerij ‘t IJ. This iconic Amsterdam brewery next to a windmill is one of Amsterdam’s best destinations for craft beer, so if you love craft beer, keep reading my tips for visiting this famous Amsterdam craft brewery.

  • 1 About Brouwerij ‘t IJ
  • 2 Tips for visiting Brouwerij ‘t IJ
  • 3 What to order at Brouwerij ‘t IJ
  • 4 Have you been to Brouwerij ‘t IJ?

About Brouwerij ‘t IJ

Photo of Brouwerij 't IJ, the famous Amsterdam brewery next to a windmill. This craft brewery is a great place to get a beer in Amsterdam! #amsterdam #netherlands #travel #beer #windmill

Brouwerij ‘t IJ is now one of Amsterdam’s most iconic breweries (besides Heineken) and perfect for getting a taste of Amsterdam’s best beer . Even as a local, I still almost always order the IJwit or Zatte as soon as I see it on a menu, so you can believe that I recommend this brewery fully.

Brouwerij ‘t IJ sits next to the historic windmill, De Gooyer, in Amsterdam Oost. This windmill dates back to the 16th century when it was used as a corn mill. Today, the windmill is owned by the city of Amsterdam although it’s not generally open to the public. You can still enjoy the view from the brewery.

The brewery began in 1985 when a former musician who was a fan of Belgian beer took over a decrepit bathhouse. The brewery was successful, but it was sold to two professional beer makers who helped cement Brouwerij ‘t IJ’s reputation for high-quality craft beer.

Unlike most pubs in Amsterdam, Brouwerij ‘t IJ is more of a tasting room that is open between 2pm and 10pm daily. It’s the perfect excuse for some relaxing day drinking or the beginning of a fun night out in Amsterdam prior to heading to some other bars. You can walk here from the center (30 minutes), take the bus, or bike from Amsterdam Centre .

There is now a second location within Vondelpark: Proeflokaal ‘t Blauwe Theehuis ! It is the perfect stop-off if you will be exploring the center or do not have time to visit the windmill. Amsterdam is smaller than you expect, but I understand that people have limited time

Tips for visiting Brouwerij ‘t IJ

Bartender serving craft beers from Brouwerij 't IJ, one of the best craft breweries in Amsterdam to visit! #amsterdam #beer #travel

You can take a tour of Brouwerij ‘t for a couple of euros, which includes a complimentary beer. Compared to touring Heineken, it’s a steal, although I recommend getting the beer flight in lieu of the tour.

You’ll pay approximately 3-4 euros per beer. Some come off the draft while others (limited editions) are generally served by the bottle. You’ll need to order at the bar for beers. They accept most cards, including credit cards.

A beer flight is a great way to try Brouwerij ‘t IJ is a great way to try more of the beers if you’re with a friend or a group as you get five beers to sample. Ask your bartender which ones might be best for you. As a tip, the sound “IJ” in Dutch sounds like the word “eye” and the W in Dutch sounds like a “V” in English.

In summer, I love sitting outside to enjoy the view although be warned that people often smoke out on the terrace. It can be annoying if you’re sensitive to smoke. There is no table service, so you might lose your spot if your whole party goes in at once.

Avoid coming to Brouwerij ‘t IJ on Fridays around 4-6 pm as it’s especially busy as it’s a popular spot for after-work drinks with larger groups. I recommend stopping by in the afternoon or on a weeknight. It’s much more chill then.

Don’t come here if you’re looking to have lunch as there’s limited food here. (I recommend heading to the nearby Amsterdam Oost for more food options. I liked Boi Boi .) You can get a limited selection of locally sourced snacks, including peanuts, dried sausage, eggs, raw ox sausage (a Dutch specialty), and abbey cheese. I like the dry sausage with pepper, personally. Head to the separate wind on the left when you enter to order.

What to order at Brouwerij ‘t IJ

A limited edition beer from Brouwerij 't IJ, Amsterdam's famous brewery next to a windmill. #travel #amsterdam #netherlands

The tap is often changing, however, Brouwerij ‘t IJ has a number of beers that are always in stock. For those who prefer lighter beers, I recommend the Flink and IJwit. For something a bit heavier, I recommend the Zatte, IPA, and Colombus. (Their bok beers are nice too if you enjoy bocks!)

The Heineken Experience

The Heineken Experience is a brand experience within Heineken®’s oldest brewery, in the heart of Amsterdam. In 1988 the former brewery closed down, because we got too big for our boots. Today, the historical building serves as a venue where you can learn all about our Heineken® heritage, the brewing process, our sometimes crazy innovations, our sponsorings and the story behind the star. You’ll also learn about the best way to taste and enjoy your Heineken® beer.

After the 1.5 hour Heineken® tour, you go up to our top floor with a special elevator inside one of our old silos. On the top floor, you can learn more about how we used to transport ingredients from the city canals into the brewery and what the function of the “Moutzolder” (malt attic) used to be. Furthermore, you can enjoy one of Amsterdam’s most breath-taking views from our exclusive roof terrace.
