Despite having some of the warmest UK temperatures on record recently, we know it’s not going to last forever. Soon enough we’ll be back to our winter sweaters longing for a glimpse of summer sun and that boost of Vitamin D. 

Returning for the third year, Spartacus Cruise will be setting sail around the western Mediterranean in May 2023 (13-20) visiting Marseille, Elba, Rome, Livorno, Nice, and Corsica.

At each stop, there will be so much to see and do. Starting in France’s second-largest city, Marseille, a veritable melting pot of people and cultures includes walking tours, local delicacies, and ancient landmarks such as the Romanesque-Byzantine basilica, the Notre Dame de la Garde, which come with breathtaking views. 

The next stop is the capital of Elba island, Portoferraio. The city’s fortifications are iconic and the nearby beaches are simply paradise. 

It goes without saying that Rome has some incredible offerings. Whether that’s a walking tour of truly iconic sites such as the Trevi Fountain or the Pantheon and the Colosseum, or Vatican City you’ll never be short of things to do. After all, when in Rome!

The port city of Livorno in the north of Italy isn’t far from historic Pisa and its world-famous leaning tower. Florence is also not too far to visit with its medieval-like metropolis and sites such as Brunelleschi’s unique cathedral with its neighboring bell tower by Giotto.

Villefranche-sur-Mer in the enchanting Côte d’Azur is part of a glittering chain of French towns also including Cannes, Nice, St. Tropez, and Monaco. These can be explored on a panoramic tour of the French Riviera. 

Finally, Corsica offers a mixture of elegant coastal towns, dense forests, and rugged peaks. The port city of Calvi is a tranquil town and the harbor promenade, with its cafés and restaurants invites you to observe, stroll and relax.

And you’ll be traveling in style onboard the Vasco da Gama. Boasting 630 cabins and suites ranging in size, this ship can accommodate nearly 1,300 passengers across nine decks. Of the cabins, the vast majority are out-ward facing and 150 come with balconies to really enjoy the experience of being at sea.

On board, you’ll find the fully equipped 24-hour gym and the spa with its dry and steam saunas are included in the trip price. You can even find the jogging trail on deck.

Two pools will keep you cool. One is prominently located at the stern of the ship with ample lounging areas. The other is mid-ship and features a movable roof.

The Vasco da Gama plays in the upper league with three à la carte restaurants to choose from. The Asian-oriented ‘Eurasia’, the ‘Pantry’ buffet restaurant reminiscent of a food court combining different cuisines, a garden bar with salads, as well as a candy store for desserts, and a meat grill.

This conceptual approach also extends to the numerous bars and culminates in ‘The Dome,”‘ an all-around glass viewing lounge.

And a cruise like this doesn’t skip on the entertainment. Numerous LGBTQ artists will quite literally be on board with numerous poolside-themed parties such as ‘White’, ‘Wig’, or ‘Kinky’, where there are no limits when it comes to outfits.

Expect to find acrobatics, vocal performances, drag shows, and much, much more! And the ever-popular ‘Mr. Cruise’ contest will be running and all guests are welcome.

Two all-inclusive options are available upon request. The ‘Classic’ package costs 29 Euros per person per travel day and the ‘Premium’ package at 49 Euros per person per travel day.

From May 13 to 20, 2023, the Spartacus Cruise sets sail on its third voyage.

The departure from Marseille even allows guests with a desire for low CO2 emissions to use rail as a means of travel.

Since summer 2021, she will be operated as Vasco da Gama by nicko cruises for the German-speaking public. The 30-meter wide and 219-meter long ship has 9 passenger decks that can accommodate nearly 1,300 passengers. Of the total 630 cabins and suites ranging in size from 16 to 102 square meters, only 129 are inward-facing; all others are outside cabins, 150 of which have balconies.

After we have left Marseille on May 13, 2023, the public sceening starts at 9 pm in the Hollywood Theater with live commentary by Cruise hostess Nina Queer. With the Vasco da Gama you will experience the diversity of the Mediterranean in a personal atmosphere and elegant ambience. The ship, built in 1993, was completely refurbished in 2015 and renovated again in 2017 and 2021. Vast estates of understated luxury have been created on nine passenger decks. The three-story aft pool, equipped with sophisticated lighting and sound technology, is the perfect location for our first-class theme parties.

With a length of 219 meters and a width of 31 meters, 630 cabins are spread over five decks. You can choose your personal retirement oasis from the wide offer of different categories. The spacious cabins offer pleasant comfort and a feel-good atmosphere and containing individually controlled air conditioning, TV, wardrobe, hairdryer and safe. In the cabins, the double beds can be converted into two single beds if necessary. Depending on the category, the private bathrooms are equipped with a shower or a shower bath, some with a whirlpool function, as well as bathrobes and slippers. Cabins with connecting doors are perfect for groups.

First-class culinary delights

Mediterranean and oriental flavours await you in a total of 5 restaurants with a choice of menus and breathtaking sea views. You can dine at the highest level in a relaxed atmosphere with a free choice of seats and meal times. The Club Bistro buffet restaurant invites you on a daily journey around the world of culinary delights with different service stations. Coffee specialties are available at Cappuccino's. Five lounge bars and a pool bar invite you to relax with delicious drinks and musical entertainment. The wine bar completes the diverse gastronomic offer.

No time to be bored at Vasco da Gama

Am 9. Oktober 2024 stechen wir auf unserer bewährten Vasco da Gama in Athen in See, um schon am nächsten Tag in Mykonos uns dem Strand- und Nachtleben hinzugeben. Damit jeder die Insel in vollen Zügen genießen kann, legen wir erst am anderen Morgen um 3.00 Uhr ab. Danach können wir uns für einen Tag auf See erholen und miteinander die Pool Games erleben. Am dritten Tag erreichen wir Zypern, wo wir in Larnaka ankern werden. Larnaka liegt an der Südküste Zyperns und ist für ihren Stadtstrand und die palmengesäumte Uferpromenade bekannt. Von hier führen uns Ausflüge auch auf den türkischen Teil der Insel z.B. ins antike Salamis. Beim nächsten Halt in Alexandria ermöglichen wir die Besichtigung der Pyramiden von Gizeh – dem letzten der Weltwunder der Antike. Ein weiterer See Tag bringt uns am 16. Oktober nach Kreta, das zur Verlängerung des Urlaubs mit seinen zahllosen Stränden einlädt.

Neben dem bordeigenen Showprogramm werden wieder zahlreiche Highlights für Begeisterung sorgen. Zu unseren Künstlern gehört die in Italien geborene Pianist und Sänger Stefano May sowie viele andere, die wir nach und nach veröffentlichen.

Für die abwechslungsreichen Bars und Lounges sind kleine Acts wie Karaoke, Lesungen, Quiz, Instrumentalkünstlern oder Akrobaten vorgesehen. Jeder kann übrigens einen eigenen Beitrag zum bunten Programm einbringen, indem er sich an dem Contest zur Dekoration der Kabinentüren beteiligt.

Ein Höhepunkt werden die Pool Games mit der Wahl des Mr. Cruise am ersten Seetag sein. Die Kandidaten müssen hier verschiedene sportliche Herausforderungen meistern und sich im Mehrkampf fast jugendfreien Spielen unterziehen.

Auf vielfachen Wunsch unserer Gäste werden die beliebten Themenparties ausgeweitet, bei denen die Gäste ihrer Fantasie für Kostüme freien Lauf lassen können. Whether you are looking to hop aboard a Pride Week cruise with a major line or sail away with a smaller company that specializes in LGBTQ voyages, the following cruise operators promise a fun, safe and memorable vacation.

(Note: While many of these cruise lines sail to LGBTQ-friendly ports of call, travelers should research destinations to learn more about cultures, customs and safety in each location and determine what's right for them.)

Founded by avid travelers Randle Roper, Patrick Gunn and John Finen, VACAYA bills itself as the first all-LGBT travel company in the full-ship charter/resort buyout sector of the travel industry to launch in more than 25 years.

"[VACAYA] was sparked by our own vacations, where we all had encountered two very different experiences," says Gunn. "The all-gay cruises were liberating, empowering and fun, but limited to a small spectrum of people. And while everyone loves a good time, there's more to a memorable vacation than just parties. Mainstream vacations offered more activities and destinations, and were accessible to a diverse set of people, but didn't always feel like a friendly, judgment-free environment."

As such, VACAYA set out to bring LGBTQ travelers from across the spectrum together in a welcoming, inclusive setting, while offering varied onboard activities and immersive itinerary options. Cruisers will enjoy traveling to ports around the world, in the Caribbean , the Galápagos, Europe , Antarctica and more. You can participate in shipwide events ranging from themed deck parties to performances by LGBTQ entertainers to rejuvenating yoga classes. Note that VACAYA's cruises are for adults only.

Previous cruisers had abundant praise for VACAYA's voyages, highlighting the company's responsiveness when booking and the kindhearted staff, as well as the genuine connections they made with other passengers on board. Many were also impressed by the events and entertainment options throughout their sailings.

In 2024, VACAYA will offer a number of voyages worldwide. The seven-night Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Apex in February will sail round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, with several fun-filled days at sea in addition to stops in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua. In August, VACAYA has a 12-night river cruise in Northern Europe on board Advance by Transcend Cruises; this sailing includes the Amsterdam Pride event. The Virgin brand has long been known for its celebration of the LGBTQ community, and cruise line Virgin Voyages is no different. The strictly adults-only cruise operator aims to provide a unique experience, with onboard tattoo parlors, impressive live entertainment, and dining options that include more than 20 eateries and menus created by Michelin star chefs. This line gets the stamp of approval from previous LGBTQ cruisers, who praise the ships' gender-neutral bathrooms, diverse staff and onboard shows with resident drag queens.

Virgin Voyages offers gay-specific sailings through travel companies like Atlantis Events, but its more mainstream itineraries still offer a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that attracts LGBTQ cruisers year-round. Virgin hosts a number of events during Pride Month each year, including deck parties and interactive social media campaigns.

"Each June here at Virgin Voyages, we like to go big for Pride Month with larger-than-life events … all monthlong," the cruise line says in a statement on its website. "It's an important time for us – both internally within our crew and for our sailors – to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ community; who for so long has had to continually fight for equality and the right to be seen, heard and included."

Virgin Voyages sails to a variety of LGBTQ-friendly countries, including New Zealand, Greece and Spain. In June 2024, consider a seven-night sailing aboard Scarlet Lady departing from Barcelona with stops in Marseille and Cannes in France as well as Spain's Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.

The world's largest gay and lesbian travel brand, Atlantis Events was founded in 1991 and welcomes more than 20,000 travelers annually on LGBTQ vacations. For its all-gay cruises, Atlantis charters megaships from popular lines like Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages in addition to smaller vessels with companies like Oceania Cruises so cruisers will have a fully immersive experience.

On board, travelers can enjoy all the perks these ships have to offer (think: pools, hot tubs, sports courts and plenty of dining choices), plus special events like drag performances, motivational speakers, LGBTQ movies on demand in each cabin and high-energy circuit parties across the ship.

"As an LGBTQ cruiser, you're looking for a ship with lots of entertainment, including dance parties and events," says Marcos Martinez, founder of Men Who Brunch, a Black gay lifestyle blog. "One of the best cruise [lines] for gay cruising is Atlantis, since you'll be able to meet hundreds of attractive men and party all day and night on the ship."

Atlantis hosts primarily gay men; women make up about 5% to 10% of bookings, according to the Atlantis website. Previous cruisers said the atmosphere on board was fun, friendly and welcoming, though some noted that the company's customer service could be better, especially when it comes to details about the cruise.

Due to the company's popularity, its three 2024 cruises are already sold out.

Specializing in all-gay river cruises – and now luxury ocean liners – Brand g Vacations was founded in 2011 and explores destinations all over the world. Chartered river cruises typically welcome between 40 and 200 LGBTQ passengers (and their straight allies), which allows cruisers to get to know one another in a smaller setting. Guests tend to skew more mature (think: 40 and older), and the line attracts both men and women.

Onboard entertainment differs slightly from larger ocean voyages: Expect more cabaret-style entertainment than massive all-night dance parties. Cruisers will also enjoy performances by drag queens, gay Broadway stars and more, on top of typical river cruise perks like sightseeing and lavish meals. Past guests recommend choosing Brand g if you're looking for a well-planned, relaxed and luxurious experience over a busier, more party-heavy vacation.

Brand g aims to provide a nearly all-inclusive cruise experience , with Mercedes or small van airport transfers, upscale hotel stays prior to embarkation, and unlimited alcoholic beverages as well as meals included in the fare. As such, prices tend to be on the high end. Plus, cruisers can feel good about their trip knowing that Brand g donates to causes in the U.S. and around the world that assist LGBTQ refugees, AIDS organizations, LGBTQ centers and more.

In 2024, Brand g sails through unique waterways around the world, including the Amazon, the Loire, the Danube, the Mekong, and the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line's small cruise ship charters also take guests to Iceland, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Croatia and other European destinations.

Celebrity Cruises sets the scene for an excellent vacation for gay travelers, from its extravagant annual Pride parties to its daily LGBTQ programming throughout the year. The mainstream line has received numerous awards for its inclusivity, receiving accolades from the Cruizie Awards, TTG Travel Awards and Travel Weekly's Magellan Awards for being one of the best cruise lines for LGBTQ passengers.

LGBTQ cruisers can start their vacations off on a high note with a special welcome party on the first night of their voyage to meet other travelers on board. After night one, there are other social events for gay cruisers to party and hang out together. Additionally, Celebrity Cruises was the first cruise line to legally marry a couple at sea in 2018, and it continues to perform same-sex marriages on its ships.

Past cruisers enjoyed their voyages with Celebrity, noting that the line was welcoming, the food was delicious, and there were plenty of areas to hang out as a group with fellow LGBTQ passengers or other companions throughout the ship.

Although all itineraries are gay-friendly, consider booking a sailing during Pride Month in June for an extra special experience. Cruisers can choose between river voyages or ocean sailings to destinations around the world. On the lesbian cruises, expect a mix of nostalgic decade-themed dance parties, folk singers, writing workshops, karaoke and other activities. Cruisers can also relax poolside, spend some time in the onboard spa or take it easy in one of the ships' lounges.

Travelers who are looking to connect with others who share similar backgrounds can do so in one of Olivia's specialized programs. Royal Caribbean International provides a welcoming and inclusive experience for LGBTQ travelers. The popular cruise line frequently partners with Atlantis Events to offer all-gay voyages throughout the year, but even the standard sailings earn praise.

Highlights of the sailings are the ships' entertainment options (including the Tony Award-winning musical "Mamma Mia!") and attentive staff, according to past cruisers. Itineraries typically include LGBTQ meetups at the beginning of each cruise for gay travelers to meet like-minded passengers. Outside of the sailing experience, Royal Caribbean has also publicly committed to supporting the LGBTQ community throughout the year, and it was the first cruise line to earn the title "Gay Traveler Approved" from GayTravel in 2016.

In 2024, consider a Royal Caribbean voyage that sails to gay-friendly destinations. "Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, [is] full of gay bars, clubs and gay beaches," says Martinez. Hop aboard Navigator of the Seas in May for a seven-night sailing round-trip from Los Angeles that stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Ensenada, Mexico. Navigator of the Seas also hosts a seven-night itinerary throughout the year that calls on Mazatlan, Mexico, as well.

According to past cruisers, if you're looking for one of the best party scenes on the open seas, consider an all-gay cruise with La Demence. Powered by a popular gay nightclub in Brussels with the same name, La Demence – French for "the madness" – primarily caters to a European crowd. Most passengers are male, though women are also welcome.

On board, passengers should expect to dance the night away at massive deck parties that last into the wee hours of the morning. The line prides itself on its top-notch DJs, impressive light setup and electric party atmosphere. Previous cruisers had high praise for the itineraries – which exclusively visit gay-friendly locations – as well as the fruity cocktails, themed nights (costumes strongly encouraged) and glamorous entertainment. Travelers can take their pick between cruise operators tailored specifically to queer communities and major cruise lines that offer festive Pride celebrations and inclusive onboard entertainment. As travel on the high seas continues to grow in popularity for vacationers, gay and lesbian travelers should consider setting sail on a fun-filled cruise vacation for their next trip.

When planning a cruise, vacationers should first consider what their ideal sailing looks like.

Gay-friendly vs. all-gay sailings: Cruisers should think about whether they'd like to travel aboard a gay-friendly mainstream line – such as Celebrity Cruises or Virgin Voyages – or opt for an all-gay, full-ship charter with a third-party vacation company.

"Each and every LGBTQIAPK person has a different level of comfortability in their 'outness,' " says Patrick Gunn, co-founder and chief marketing officer of LGBTQ vacation company VACAYA. Of VACAYA's all-gay charters, he adds, "For one magical week, our community gets to be the majority and live life out loud in the blissful utopia VACAYA creates on a gay cruise. That single change from being an always-minority to a sudden majority can have a profoundly positive real-world effect on individuals."

• Travel style: Some cruise operators (think: Atlantis Events and La Demence) are known for their electrifying all-night parties, which may be perfect for gay groups of friends. Meanwhile, other companies like VACAYA and Olivia look to provide a more diverse selection of activities, ranging from tea dances (LGBTQ parties that, historically, included tea service) to philanthropic service activities to immersive onshore experiences.
• Ports of call: Some of the most LGBTQ- and gay-friendly destinations for cruises include: Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Sydney; Barcelona, Spain; Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan; Helsinki; Quebec City; Auckland, New Zealand; Mykonos, Greece; Reykjavik, Iceland; Amsterdam; Tel Aviv, Israel; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and San Francisco. Countries that gay travelers may want to avoid include the Maldives, Jamaica, Morocco, Malaysia and Haiti, as homosexuality is illegal in these destinations.

Reisebericht: Spartacus Gay Cruise 2023

Eine Mittelmeer Kreuzfahrt ganz im Zeichen des Regenbogens

Lange haben wir darauf hin gefiebert, am 13.05.2023 wer der Tag dann endlich gekommen und es hieß „Leinen los“ für die Spartacus Gay Cruise, eine Themenreise, die sich an schwule Männer gerichtet hat. Die Anreise nach Marseille mit dem Flugzeug am Vortag verlief reibungslos. Auch das Flughafenhotel, in welches wir uns für eine Nacht einquartiert hatten, ließ keinen Raum für Beanstandungen.

Einschiffung in Marseille (Frankreich)

Nach einer erholsamen Nacht und einem kleinen, aber feinen Frühstück begaben wir uns schließlich auf den Weg zum Kreuzfahrthafen von Marseille, der mit dem Taxi vom Flughafen aus rund 30 Minuten entfernt liegt. Dort angekommen waren wir schon von der Anzahl der Kreuzfahrt-Schiffe beeindruckt, die sich das Hafenbecken teilten. Insgesamt sechs Schiffe sorgten für geschäftiges Treiben am Pier. Neben Schiffen wie der Costa Toscana wirkt die Vasco da Gama fast schon winzig – obgleich sie sich mit 12 Decks auf knapp 220 Metern Länge durchaus nicht verstecken muss. Maximal 1.000 Gäste und 550 Crewmitglieder finden auf ihr (sehr viel) Platz. Auf unserer Reise waren etwa 700 Gäste aus über 40 Nationen an Bord, so dass eine sehr schöne, internationale Stimmung geherrscht hat.

Das Schiff, welches 1993 gebaut und 2018 sowie 2021 aufwendig renoviert wurde, ist in vielerlei Hinsicht in heutigen Zeiten besonders. Die geringe Anzahl an Balkonkabinen wird durch die großzügige Freifläche auf dem Sonnendeck wettgemacht. Zwei Pools, wovon einer mit einem ausfahrbaren Glasdach auch bei regnerischem Wetter nutzbar ist, mehrere Whirlpools und ein schöner Spa-Bereich inklusive Sauna und Dampfbad sorgen für entspannende Stunden. Zu den weiteren Unterhaltungseinrichtungen an Bord gehören das sehr geschmackvoll eingerichtete Theater. Auch der Kinosaal, die Bibliothek inklusive Lesezimmer sowie die Diskothek „The Dome“ wissen zu überzeugen.

Eine große Anzahl an Bars, insgesamt fünf Restaurants, davon eines das aufpreispflichtige Steakhouse sowie ein Snack-Grill lassen auch kulinarisch keine Wünsche offen.

Die Einschiffung verlief reibungslos und die Kabinen sind direkt bezugsfertig, sobald man an Bord geht. So kann man gleich sein Handgepäck ablegen und sich etwas frisch machen, bevor man das Schiff erkundet. Unsere Außenkabine gefiel uns sehr gut – dank viel Stauraum und einer großen Anzahl an Schränken und Schubläden haben wir unser Gepäck problemlos unterbekommen. Im Badezimmer fanden wir neben einem Haartrockner, einem Schminkspiegel und den obligatorischen Pflegeprodukten auch eine echte Badewanne vor.

Abendprogramm und Seetag

Das Abendprogramm sah die Live-Übertragung des Eurovision Song Contest mit Live-Moderation durch die Drag-Queen Nina Queer vor – im Theater für alle deutschsprachigen Gäste in deutscher, in der Sportsbar auf englischer Sprache. Insgesamt war auf der Kreuzfahrt ein sehr gemischtes Publikum schwuler Männer aller Altersgruppen vorzufinden. An Bord herrschte von Anfang an eine sehr offene, herzliche und fröhliche Stimmung, die bis zum letzten Tag angehalten hat. Für die große Anzahl an Alleinreisenden gab es wechselnde Aktionen, beispielsweise Single-Dinner oder Bar-Abende, bei denen man problemlos Kontakte knüpfen und neue Bekanntschaften machen konnte. Jeden Abend wurden Themenpartys mit wechselnden Mottos angeboten, z.B. Uniform- & Matrosenlooks, 90s, White Party oder die Sports Night. In den Bars an Bord gab es Abends häufig Live-Musik, tagsüber wurde das Programm durch Pool Partys, wie der Wahl zum Mr. Gay Cruise am Seetag, abgerundet. Am Abend stand die „Drag“ Mottoparty auf dem Programm. Opulente Outfits, schillernde Farben und einmalige Kostüme sorgten für mächtig Stimmung an Bord.

Portoferraio / Elba (Italien)

Der erste Hafen auf unserer Route war Portoferraio auf Elba. Die Hauptstadt der Toskana-Insel, die insbesondere als Verbannungsort Napoleons 1814 bekannt ist, wartet mit ihrer imposanten Festung, einer schönen Hafenpromenade und traumhaften Stränden mit kristallklarem Wasser auf. Da die Vasco da Gama hier auf Reede lag, wurden wir mit dem Tenderboot an Land transportiert. Der zentral gelegene Bootsanleger eignet sich ausgezeichnet für einen ausgedehnten Spaziergang durch die idyllische Hafenstadt. Von hier aus erreicht man alle wesentlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Die zahlreichen Cafés und Restaurants laden auf eine Pause mit Blick auf die malerische Kulisse ein. Tipp: wer den Aufstieg auf die Festung „Forte Falcone“ auf sich nimmt, wird mit einem unvergleichlichen Blick auf die Dächer der Stadt bei einem kühlen Getränk des dort ansässigen Bistros belohnt.

Zurück an Bord freuten wir uns auf die Themenparty des Abends mit dem Motto „Uniform- und Matrosenoutfits“. Nahezu alle Gäste waren in Motto gerechten Outfits gekleidet. Das hat nicht nur zur Belustigung der Beteiligten, sondern auch des nautischen Personals an Bord beigetragen. In Anwesenheit der zahlreichen Kapitäne fühlten wir uns in jedem Fall mehr als sicher.

Civitavecchia / Rom (Italien)

Civitavecchia, auch bekannt als „Roms Seehafen“, bietet aufgrund seiner Nähe zur italienischen Hauptstadt zahlreiche Ausflugsoptionen. Daher darf die Hafenstadt auf keiner Mittelmeerroute fehlen. Wer die „Ewige Stadt“ noch nicht kennt, sollte sie keinesfalls verpassen. Neben (teils teuren) Bustransfers, die bereits an Bord gebucht werden können, kann man auch deutlich günstiger mit dem öffentlichen Zugverkehr ab Civitavecchia Termini (Hauptbahnhof) nach Rom gelangen. Die Züge verkehren stündlich in beide Richtungen. Ein weiterer Vorteil der Vasco da Gama wurde uns hier offenbar. Während die großen Schiffe der bekannten Reedereien schon am frühen Abend ablegten, verblieb unser Schiff bis etwa 21:00 Uhr im Hafen. Deshalb bieten die teils sehr langen Liegezeiten ausreichend Zeit für Erkundungstouren vor Ort ohne Stress und Hetze.

Die Abendgestaltung war ebenfalls bereits bestens geplant, denn bei der 90s Neon Fete war Partystimmung vorprogrammiert.

Livorno (Italien)

Nun ging die Reise weiter nach Livorno in der Toskana. Von hier aus lassen sich ganz wunderbar Ausflüge nach Pisa oder Florenz unternehmen. Das ist auch empfehlenswert, denn die Hafenstadt mit ihren vielen Kanälen im Stadtteil „Klein-Venedig“ wirkt leider an einigen Stellen etwas heruntergekommen. Wer keine Lust auf einen großen Tagesausflug hat, kann auch die Chance nutzen und die schöne Vasco da Gama – fast schon exklusiv – ausgiebig genießen. Abends besuchten wir die Show „Goodbye Deutschland“ im Theater. Farbenfrohe Kostüme, Songs zum Mitsingen und eine gelungene Inszenierung sorgten für einen kurzweiligen Abend. Danach begeisterte die Sports Night in der Diskothek „The Dome“ die Partygänger an Bord. Wer keine Lust auf tägliche Party hat, sei die Partyband ans Herz gelegt, welche in wechselnden Bars für Stimmung sorgt.

Villefranche-sur-Mer (Frankreich)

Der vorletzte Hafen der Spartacus Gay Cruise auf unserer Route war Villefranche-sur-Mer. Ob man sich für einen Ausflug nach Nizza , nach Monaco oder einen Spaziergang vor Ort entscheidet – die Cote d’Azur zeigt sich hier von ihrer charmantesten Seite. Die prunkvollen Villen werden gerahmt von einer wunderschönen Naturkulisse, schroffen Klippen und dem azurblauen Meer. Wir nutzen die Gelegenheit und nahmen den Zug nach Monaco. Das Tagesticket Nizza – Villefranche sur Mer- Monaco kostet pro Person 10 €. Man kann den ganzen Tag zwischen den Haltepunkten pendeln, was dieses Angebot perfekt für Tagestouristen macht. In Monaco selbst waren die Vorbereitungen auf den Grand Prix Monte Carlo 2023 in vollem Gange, was einen Spaziergang entlang der Boxengasse ermöglichte. Vom Bahnhof aus erreicht man den Fürstenpalast in ca. 25 Minuten, muss aber zunächst einen kleinen Aufstieg in Kauf nehmen. Wer gut zu Fuß ist, sollte dies aber keine Probleme bereiten. Zurück an Bord erwartete uns zunächst eine fulminante Show der Drag-Queen Nina Queer im Hollywood Theater. Danach hieß es „Kinky Night“ – sicherlich für viele Gäste ein ganz besonderes Highlight der Reise.

Calvi / Korsika (Frankreich)

Der letzte Stopp stellte Calvi auf Korsika dar. Die zu Frankreich zählende, viertgrößte Mittelmeerinsel ist im französischen auch als „Insel der Schönheit“ bekannt und empfing uns nochmal mit strahlendem Sonnenschein, weshalb wir gleich am morgen mit dem Tenderboot übersetzten. Neben Calvis traumhafter Promenade lohnt sich ebenfalls ein Aufstieg auf die Zitadelle, dem Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Früher Festungsanlage, vereint sie heute eine Vielzahl an Bars, Cafés und kleiner Boutiquen. Auch einige Ateliers lokaler Künstler finden sich hier.

Zurück an Bord genossen wir noch ein letztes Mal den aufmerksamen Service der freundlichen Crew, ein tolles Konzert der Partyband und die White Party, die gleichzeitig auch den offiziellen Abschluss der Reise darstellte.

Nun war der Abreisetag gekommen. Da man die Kabinen um 8 Uhr morgens freigeben und das Schiff bis 11 Uhr verlassen muss, traten wir nach einem ausgiebigen Frühstück die Fahrt zum Flughafen an. Auch hier nutzen wir eines der zahlreichen Taxen, die am Hafenterminal zur Verfügung stehen.

Unsere Reise auf der Spartacus Gay Cruise war auch für uns eine neue Erfahrung – wir möchten sie keinesfalls missen. Wer Lust hat auf eine Kreuzfahrt unter Gleichgesinnten, ein wunderschönes Schiff, eine außergewöhnliche Route, viel Party und tollen Erlebnissen, ist hier bestens aufgehoben.

During our 2022 and 2023 cruises, Nelson discovered his passion for the stage and the limelight and had his artist premier on our theater stage during the grand finale show last year. The Brazilian with a penchant for unusual styles and fashion moderates various events in his new home of Berlin and works as a model for LGBT+ campaigns for well-known brands. More recently, the style icon with the “headscarf” trademark has also appeared as a DJ, mixing Brazilian funk and pop with disco classics and house music. In 2024 he will play his own set in the Captain’s Club and, as the main hostess, is always available to answer your questions and requests or drink tequila with you at the bar.

Miss Abby OMG

Miss Abby OMG is known to all “Drag Race” fans from the first season of the Dutch offshoot of the worldwide successful format and phenomena and made it to the final there. On the show, she metaphorically set her castmates on fire and went down in the history books of the franchise as a lip-synched assassin. No wonder; after all, the beautiful Latina queen is originally from Brazil! On board the Vasco da Gama, Abby will also heat you up with various dance routines and as moderator of our pool games. She has been on board as one of our main artists for the past two years and will again have a lot of exciting costumes and a lot of “spice” in her suitcase in 2024.

Stefano May

The Italian-born singer, songwriter and piano virtuoso became passionate about music at an early age and began classical piano training at the age of seven. Stefano wants to bring people together through the power of music. By sharing his gifts with others, he gives them the opportunity to do the same. “Music is there to heal the soul. People find common ground in the music they listen to, and each song has the right time and place for each of its listeners.” His video “Find My Way” was created as a musical tribute to the Motown world, which has greatly influenced Stefano’s musical taste and sound since childhood. Thematically, the song was inspired by his mother, who raised Stefano to dream big and share his gifts with strength, patience and heartfelt devotion.

DJ Chris Bekker

DJ & Producer Chris Bekker is one of the Berlin export hits of the electronic gay and straight scene worldwide. Since 2013 he has been working together with music pioneer and producer legend Paul van Dyk, on whose label VANDIT Rec his releases appear. Chris’s productions are global chart garantes and club anthems, together with Giorgio Moroder, Gareth Emery, Jerome Isma-ae, Paul Thomas or Pagano, among others. His first music and video album ‘Berlinition’ was officially supported by visitBerlin and Deutsche Lufthansa as Berlin Embassy. He played on the La Demence Cruise for several years. Chris Bekker also runs the worldwide sound agency klang ID berlin.

DJ Juan Del Chambo

Juan Del Chambo is a Venezuelan DJ and producer based in Cologne. He loves weaving melodic rhythms, driving bass lines and heavy kick drums to create a sound that will shake up dance floors. In February 2023, he released his highly anticipated debut song „El Diablo“ on Prospect Records in collaboration with Rony Golding. This sizzling new release perfectly combines his Venezuelan roots with his love of techno. Juan fascinates his audience by blurring the boundaries between genres in an emotional way. Over the course of his career he has graced the decks of renowned venues, including the Kitkat Club in Berlin, the Artheater and Bootshaus in Cologne and the Radion West in Amsterdam.

djPoppyDownes

djPoppyDownes is a Chicago native DJ whose passion is to entertain, educate and inspire dancefloors around the world. In 2020, as the world was changing dramatically, djPoppyDownes took the moment to focus on his craft and deepen his knowledge of nightclub gear and music theory. Today he mixes classic and obscure disco beats with hits from all eras, creating a mood that celebrates individuality, promotes inclusivity and embraces queerness. “I love turning the dance floor into a place where people can put their problems behind them, connect with someone and express themselves freely.”

DJ James Munich

James is one of the most famous gay DJs in southern Germany and Austria. International performances have taken him to Sitges, for example, to Bear Week. He is also well known as a long-time resident DJ at the Munich CSD and the Pink Lake Festival at Wörthersee/Austria. With more than a decade under his belt, his queer party series “PINK PARADISE” in Munich is an institution and the longest-running gay party. His musical ability ranges from circuit house, pop, dancefloor, classics to party and hits.

SPARTACUS GAY TRAVEL INDEX 2023 | Belgium 17th most gay travel friendly country; Malta on 1, Canada and Switzerland share 2nd

The Spartacus International Gay Guide ranks Belgium on a shared 17th place in its Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2023 . This year ‘s most gay travel friendly countries are Malta , Canada and Switzerland . 

The updated Spartacus Gay Travel Index provides an overview of the situation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and intersex ( LGBTQIA+ ) people in 203 different independent countries and notable or notorious regions. 

For 2023 , Malta was the solo first place finisher for the first time, followed by runners-up Canada and Switzerland who were awarded equal points. The top spot in the ranking of the United States of America this year is shared by California , New York , the state of Washington and Colorado .

Malta was able to qualify for the top spot on its own for the first time. This Mediterranean island state improved once again in its recognition of gender identity and is this year’s host of EuroPride .

Germany improved its overall ranking by one point thanks to legal improvements for intersex* persons and now ranks ninth in the index along with Iceland , Spain and the United Kingdom .

Switzerland is the big winner

Switzerland made the biggest leap this year, from seven to twelve points and thus to second place, thanks in part to legislation providing for same-sex marriage and a progressive self-determination law. 

The global liberalization process of LGBTQIA+ rights has gained traction again. So-called conversion procedures in particular are legally banned in more and more countries, including Australia , Israel and Vietnam .

Predictable bottom-end

Indonesia , Saudi Arabia , Iran , the Russian republic of Chechnya and Afghanistan fell to the bottom of the list.

Indonesia  lost three points, partly due to a new criminal law influenced by fundamentalism, causing this nation to slip from 117th to 159th place. The most dangerous countries for LGBTQIA+ travelers in 2023 also include states such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Somalia, and now Afghanistan, where homosexuals are massively persecuted and killed.

Bleak outlook in the United States

The winner in the post- Trump -era US, which continues to be divided on LGBTQIA+ rights, is once again California: In addition to a fulsome queer infrastructure, the state also offers excellent legal protections for LGBTQIA+ citizens. It scored an 11 out of a possible 13 points. 

However, three other states also received 11 points this year: New York, Washington, and Colorado.

Oklahoma and Tennessee brought up the rear and Florida fell from 23rd to 31st place in the US ranking, partly due to new censorship (‘Don’t Say Gay’) laws.

Gay Travel Index

Spartacus is publishing the Gay Travel Index since 2012 . There are still many places in the world where LGBTQIA+ travellers and citizens must fear for their happiness and safety. Due to the sometimes wide differences in the world, it can happen that holidaymakers endanger themselves simply by unwise behaviour. 

“In order to support the safety of gay tourists worldwide, we publish the Gay Travel Index. It serves as a first guideline – you can find more detailed information about your travel destinations on our website and blog”, Spartacus says.

“The index attempts at finding a balance between measuring the rights of the local LGBT community and considering the demands of queer holidaymakers. Our aim is to monitor the safety of queer people in each country and also increase the awareness on grievances. We are convinced that there are holidaymakers who choose countries where the queer community is an accepted and beloved part of society.” 

“But there are also holidaymakers who consciously want to travel to a country in order to enter into a dialogue with the oppressed local queer community. The index is intended to provide either type of holidaymaker with trustworthy and valid information.”

The index has become more and more diverse and queer in the past years. In 2020 we have added new categories to the index to match with a broader diversity of the queer community. 

“Thus, the rights of intersexual* people or to a third gender option on legal documents are indexed, as is the welcome fact that conversion procedures are being banned by more and more countries. A specific new category for queer travellers is that of gay marketing, indicating how and if gay travel is promoted per country. It can also be considered an indicator of acceptance of queer people by the local society.”

Rating system

When creating the index, the focus is on political decisions affecting the queer community , legal changes or acts of violence and prohibitions. Positive developments in the respective countries count as plus points, negative ones as minus points. 

Categories include among others: marriage equality and anti-discrimination laws, sodomy laws, pride parade bans and hate crimes. Political developments such as marriage equality might at first only affect the LGBT community of the respective country. But every step towards equality is a step forward towards social acceptance and has therefore a direct impact on holidaymakers.

The categories have different levels. If a category has three levels, a maximum of three points can be awarded.

The only exception is the death penalty: A country gets one minus point if the death penalty for homosexual acts is anchored in the law but not executed. If the death penalty is still executed, the country gets five minus points. This ensures these countries rank at the bottom of the list.

Gay Travel Index USA

The legal situation for queer people varies greatly in the 50 US states. “In the Gay Travel Index USA we therefore take a close look at the individual states. “In 2020, we removed some categories, for example marriage equality and HIV travel restrictions, because these are federal laws and all states would receive the same score. Instead, we have added new categories tailored to the USA, which emphasize the differences between the states: Hate crime laws, gay and trans panic defense, anti-discrimination legislation and queer infrastructure.”

For 2023, Belgium is ranked a shared 17 and indeed appears on the 17th line of the spreadsheet. In 2022, Belgium was a shared 18th, on the 18th line. In 2020 the kingdom was ranked 15th on the 15th line. In 2019 Belgium ended 4th, on the 5th line. Because it shared that ranking with Austria and A comes before B. 

Is Belgium becoming worse for LGBTQIA+ travellers. No. Other countries are just faring better.

Van 9 tot 16 oktober 2024 is het weer zover. Tijdens de Spartacus Gay Cruise 2024 zal de Vasco da Gama van nicko cruises weer de trossen losgooien! Samen bezoeken we unieke bestemmingen zoals Athene, Mykonos, Larnaka (Cyprus) en Alexandrië. Onze feesten aan boord zijn legendarisch geworden - maak je klaar voor sexy outfits, spannende acts en unieke optredens, of het nu op de PRIDE party, de RED & WILD night of het 90s NEON EVENT is! Een overnachting in Alexandrië, de stad van Alexander de Grote, is de perfecte gelegenheid voor sightseeing in de bruisende metropool aan zee.

Overdag houden de "bijna volwassen" zwembadspelletjes of de verkiezing van Mr Cruise je koel. Train in de fitnessruimte en ontspan op het zonnedek of nudistendek. Twee dagen op zee en betoverende stranden op Mykonos en Cyprus zorgen voor voldoende ontspanning. Culinaire hoogstandjes worden geboden door in totaal 5 restaurants, 5 bars en de poolbar.

Deze avonden in het glamoureuze Hollywood Theater worden aangevuld met gaststerren uit de gemeenschap met zangoptredens en dragshows. Spartacus Gay Cruise aan boord van de Vasco da Gama

Met de Vasco da Gama ontdekt u de diversiteit van de Middellandse Zee in een persoonlijke sfeer en stijlvolle ambiance. Het schip, gebouwd in 1993, is in 2015 grondig gerenoveerd en in 2017 en 2021 opnieuw gerenoveerd. Op negen passagiersdekken werden uitgebreide ontwikkelingsgebieden in discrete luxe gecreëerd. Het drie verdiepingen tellende achterste zwembad, dat is uitgerust met geavanceerde licht- en geluidstechnologie, is de perfecte locatie voor ons eersteklas themafeest.

Met een lengte van 219 m en een breedte van 31 m zijn 630 hutten verdeeld over vijf dekken. U kunt uw persoonlijke oase van rust kiezen uit het brede scala van verschillende categorieën. De ruime hutten bieden aangenaam comfort en een feel-good sfeer en zijn allemaal voorzien van individueel regelbare airconditioning, een televisie, een kledingkast, een föhn en een kluis. In de hutten kunnen de tweepersoonsbedden indien nodig worden omgebouwd tot twee eenpersoonsbedden. Afhankelijk van de categorie zijn de privébadkamers uitgerust met een douche of een douchebad, sommige met een whirlpoolfunctie, evenals badjassen en badstof pantoffels. Hutten met verbindingsdeuren zijn ideaal voor groepen.

Culinaire ervaringen in een klasse apart

Mediterrane en Verre Oosterse lekkernijen wachten op u in in totaal 5 restaurants met een keuze aan menu's en een adembenemend uitzicht op de zee. U kunt dineren op het hoogste niveau in een ontspannen sfeer met vrije keuze van zitplaatsen en maaltijden. Het buffetrestaurant Club Bistro nodigt u elke dag uit voor een kleine wereldtour langs culinaire hoogstandjes bij verschillende tankstations. Lekkere koffiespecialiteiten zijn verkrijgbaar bij Cappuccino's. Vijf loungebars en een poolbar bieden ontspanning met heerlijke drankjes en muzikaal entertainment. De wijnbar rondt het gevarieerde gastronomische aanbod af.

Geen verveling aan boord van de Vasco da Gama

Het ene hoogtepunt volgt het andere op tijdens de Spartacus Gay Cruise. Maar er zijn ook tal van andere entertainment- en sportmogelijkheden voor de lol. Op het bovendek is de Dome met zijn maritieme ontwerp indrukwekkend en verandert 's avonds in een levendige nachtclub. Het centrale atrium biedt op drie dekken een winkelgalerij, een fotowinkel en een excursiekantoor. Gasten kunnen hun geluk beproeven in het casino en de kaartkamer. Ook sportliefhebbers komen aan hun trekken bij de Vasco da Gama. Als je aan het sporten bent in het fitnesscentrum, beloont het uitzicht van de kapitein je inspanningen en op het bovendek zorgen een joggingbaan, een tennisbaan en een basketbal- en sportveld voor extra sportieve afwisseling. Na afloop kunt u heerlijk ontspannen in het Wellness & Beauty Center met spa, sauna en stoombad.
