If you're running iOS 17 , Safari now comes with a translation feature baked into the browser, making it easier than ever to translate a web page on iPhone and iPad.

Once enabled, text is translated in-line on the webpage that you're viewing. It's a handy tool if you want to read websites that are written in different languages, and it's available right in the address bar in Safari.

With this in mind, here's how you can translate web pages in Safari on iPhone and iPad.

In iOS 15 and later, the ability to translate a web page's language to your native language is now a built-in part of Safari. As such, you no longer need a third-party app to translate. Here's how to use built-in language translation in Safari in iOS 14, iOS 15, and later.

  • Tap the action button on the left side of the address bar while visiting a site that you need to translate. The button looks like two A's next to each other.
  • Tap Translate to [Your Device Language] .

  • Tap Enable Translation if prompted.

Your page will then be translated into the primary language that you've set on your device. If you want to revert back to the page's original language, take the following steps.

  • Tap the translate button in the Safari address bar. It takes the place of the standard action button on the left side of the address bar.
  • Tap View Original .

The page will revert to its original language.

If you're running a version of iOS 13 or earlier on your device, then a third-party app with a translation extension is what you'll want to use. Microsoft's Translator extension is an excellent tool for the task, as it translates the web page in place when activated.

How to translate web pages in safari on mac.

Have you landed on a French or Spanish website? Translate it to English with the press of a button!

Often find yourself on websites with text in a foreign language? If you use Safari, there's no need to go to Google Translate. You can translate web pages between seven languages right in Safari on a Mac.

Starting with Safari 14.0, Apple included a translation feature directly in the browser. As of this writing, the feature is in beta, but fully functional. If your Mac is running the latest version of macOS Mojave, Catalina,  Big Sur , or newer, you can access the translation feature.

The translation functionality works between the following languages: English, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Brazilian Portuguese.

By default, you can translate any of the above languages to English. You can also add more languages to the mix (we'll talk more about that below).

To get started, open a web page in one of the supported languages. Safari will automatically recognize that language, and you'll see "Translation Available" in the URL bar, along with a Translation button; click it.

If this is the first time you've used the feature, a pop-up will appear. Click "Enable Translation" to turn on the feature.

In the translation menu, select "Translate to English."

The text on the page will instantly convert to English, as shown in the image below. The Translation button will also turn blue.

To disable the Translation feature and return to the original language, click the Translation button again, and then select "View Original."

As we mentioned above, you can also translate to languages other than English. To do so, click the Translation button, and then select "Preferred Languages."

This opens the "Language & Region" menu in System Preferences. Here, click the plus sign (+) to add a new preferred language. You can add multiple languages here while continuing to use English as the default language across your Mac.

In the pop-up, select the languages you want to add, and then click "Add."

System Preferences will ask if you want to make this your default language. Choose the previous default language if you want it to remain the status quo.

Now that you've added a new preferred language, you'll see the translation button even when you visit web pages that are in English.

The translation process for a preferred language is the same: click the Translation button in the URL bar, and then select "Translate to [the language you selected]."

Again, you can view the original at any time by simply clicking "View Original" in the Translation menu.

If you're traveling to a new country, you can also use the built-in Translate app on your iPhone or iPad to quickly translate speech between multiple languages.

Translate Foreign Webpages in Safari for iOS 8

While it can be argued that Google Chrome is generally a better browser, iPhone users tend to remain loyal to Safari . But one feature that gives Chrome the upper hand is its ability to recognize the language on any given page and offer you an option to translate it to your native language.

Safari doesn't want to work overtime and offers no such option for translation services, but there is now an action extension that can be easily added to Safari's share sheet for translations. It's the same one that Apple demoed during WWDC '14 last month— Bing Translator .

While it would have been awesome for Microsoft and Apple to reach a deal for incorporating Bing Translator directly into Safari, it never would've (and never will) happen, so this extension is the next best thing.

Step 1: Install Bing Search

To get the Bing Translator option in your share sheet, you'll first need to install Microsoft's search engine app— Bing Search —on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

Step 2: Adjust Your Share Sheet

While in the Safari browser, open your share sheet by tapping on the icon, then select More from the bottom row and enable Bing Translator .

The next time you're browsing native German newspapers, just open the share sheet and translate. The progress will be displayed at the top of the page and, depending on the strength of your data or Wi-Fi connection, should complete fairly quick.

Microsoft updates Bing Search app with translation widget in Safari and Notification Center

Bing Search (Safari extension 001)

First demoed at WWDC 2014 back in June, Microsoft’s Bing translation widget and custom actions for Safari and the Notification Center in iOS 8 is now available by way of an update to the free Bing Search app for the iPhone and iPod touch  devices.  Available free of charge in the App Store , the new Bing Search 5.0.1 also contains bug fixes.

As shown on the screenshots top of post, enabling the Bing Search Translation action in Safari requires that you bring up the Share sheet in Safari.

Just tap the third icon from the bottom right in Safari.

The standard Share sheet will pop up. Now swipe to the left on the actions listed at the bottom of it and tap the More icon. The Activities screen appears where you must set the “Open in Bing” and “Bing Translator” switches to ON in order to enable Bing’s Safari actions.

That’s it, you’re all set.

As seen on the screenshot below, you can now simply choose the Bing Translator option in Safari’s Share menu for a machine-translated English version of the webpage you’re viewing, or choose to open the webpage in the native Bing app.

Bing Search (Safari extension 002)

This is an in-line translator so translated webpages look exactly like their originals. To enable the Bing Search Translation widget in the Today view of the Notification Center, pull down from the top of the screen to bring up the Notification Center UI.

Now tap the Edit button halfway down.

Bing Search (Today widget 001)

A new screen shows up listing all your enabled and disabled Today widgets. Find the “Bing Today” widget and hit the free plus sign to enable it. The widget now appears right inside the Today view of the Notification Center, showing Bing’s image of the day, currently trending topics and more.

Bing Search (Today widget 002)

As a reminder, Bing also powers the new integrated web search in iOS 8’s Spotlight to provide web search links alongside the contents of your phone so you can find information even faster.

Go to Settings > General > Spotlight Search to enable Bing Web Results. Note that this feature is region-dependent so users in certain markets may be unable to enable Bing Web Results for Spotlight searches (for details, check out Apple’s iOS 8 Feature Availability webpage ).

Aside from searching the web, Bing’s Search app lets you save money with Bing Rewards and Bing Offers, keep up with trending stories, news and images, save the daily homepage photos to use as your Wallpaper or Lock screen (and sync them to Bing Desktop) and much more.

The 12.5-megabyte Bing Search download requires an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 5.0 or later. Bing for iPad has not received these iOS 8-specific features as of yet.

How to translate any website in Safari using iOS 8 extension

bing translator safari

One of the greatest features of iOS 8 is that it has made Safari capable of supporting extensions. This means third-party developers can now add useful features to one of the world’s most popular web browsers. This is particularly good for the users as they can add new functionalities that can make web browsing much more convenient on their iPhones and iPads. One new feature that you can add to mobile Safari using iOS 8 extensions is the ability to translate any web page into English. By default Safari does not have the translate feature so iOS users had to rely on Google Chrome for this function. But now you can translate any website in Safari using extension offered by Microsoft’s Bing Search app.

Translate any website in Safari using Bing’s iOS 8 extension

1. Before you can enable translate extension in Safari you need the free Bing app, which you can download from the App Store here .

2. After installing the app open Safari app and tap on the ‘Share’ button from the button bar.

3. Next tap on the ‘More’ button. You may have to swipe left on the section that houses ‘Add bookmark’ button to get the ‘More’ option.

4. On the ‘More’ page look for ‘Bing Translator’ and enable it.

That’s it! Now you can visit any website of your choice and Safari will translate it for you just like Chrome does. To use this feature simply visit a non-English website and then tap on the ‘Share’ button. Then tap on ‘Bing Translator’ button to make the magic happen.

How to translate websites in Safari on iOS 8

Extensions allow for some amazing things on iOS 8, and this is one of them.

bing translator safari

Ever visit a website that's in a foreign language while using Safari on your iOS device? If so, you've already experienced the disappointment of realizing that Safari lacks the ability to translate the page for you.

Prior to iOS 8, I kept Google's Chrome app installed on my iPhone with its sole purpose to translate websites. (Granted, I don't visit foreign sites often, but when I do, I like to know what it is I'm looking at.)

With the release of iOS 8, however, Apple has opened up a bit by allowing app developers to create extensions for apps . With these extensions you can share content from nearly anywhere, add editing tools to the Photos app and with an update to the Bing app, you can now translate websites directly in mobile Safari.

All you need to do is download the free Bing app from the App Store.

ios-8-bing-translate-screen.jpg

  • After it's installed, launch Safari and tap on the Share button.
  • Swipe left on the bottom row of icons and tap on "More."
  • Slide the switch next to "Bing Translate" to the on position and tap Done.

With the extension enabled, visit a website such as, say, CNET Español . Again, tap on the Share button, then tap on the new Bing Translate icon. A few seconds later, the page magically transitions to your native tongue. By default the app uses the same language your iOS device is set to use, but you can adjust it by launching the proper Bing app.

The best I have found for a large group conversation

I have been using this app for a number of years and it always did an adequate job of bi-directional translation to help me as I learned Spanish. About a month ago I discovered the Group Conversation functionality and it has been a complete game-changer. I teach ESL classes to a diverse audience with five languages present and it initially did not look like it would be possible to have a multi-language class. The Group Conversation allows everyone to hear in their original language as they learn new material and then we can all practice in English. I have been able to use it in four class sessions so far and after working out some initial kinks, it works great. The only thing I would ask for from Microsoft at this point is better written installation and set up procedures. Initial setup with a large class is cumbersome but I am not going to rate this lower than five-stars for that piece. The functionality rocks. Well done. Update: One feature that has been changed in the new version is the removal of the two buttons in conversation mode, one for each language. It is now only auto-detect. This has not worked as well as having two buttons when it comes to accuracy. I prefer the option for either method, like it used to be.

Update! Delete History!

Update Jan 2024: The ability to delete your translation history is finally added! Split screen is back, sizable, and rotatable! Good user interface improvements and better options in settings! Nice update, guys! Two bugs I found: #1: I can’t get auto-speak translations to work. #2: In split-screen mode, both user microphones are on my side of the screen. One should be on the other person’s side. hopefully these will be fixed soon. March 2023: I really like the new ability to tap the microphone and have it continuously translate, without it shutting off the microphone every time the speaker pauses. That said, the split screen option should also still be available, as it is not practical to explain to someone speaking a different language that they should download the app and initiate conversation mode on their own phone. It’s a good feature, but should be optional, not mandatory! Also, please add back in the ability to delete all history at once. I do not wish to individually delete hundreds of translated messages. [UPDATE: Devs say this will be added back in] Also, there should be a way to do one-way translations. Sometimes the app incorrectly hears Japanese language as English, and tries to translate it into Japanese!

Quality app should charge for it.

I use it to find characters left out of the 2nd addition Collins while translating the other…. Well I will keep that to my self… though it all started with a Websters for 7 dollars ever English speaking person should buy and start at “letter” the problem with the binding in the 2 simpler books is an issue I may need to buy them twice. This app can do much more than the two books. But I enjoy the ancient characters considering the keyboard can distinguish them better. The knew characters are PC but the old characters are better at guiding. This program recognizes both and uses a slightly different font to help recognition of characters one may find on on the street as a business owners personal touch. One time I was looking up characters in mandarin to see how it was said they surprised me with a addition to it that only a teacher would say. The attributes of one’s hand weighting may account for the inability to compute a translation for my personal righting but the “cost accountant” probably said hold on that.

Web Page Translation in Safari on Mac

Safari analyses each web page you visit to determine its language. This determination is made entirely on your device. If the web page can be translated to any of your preferred languages, you can choose to translate it. If you translate, Safari will send the web page’s contents (including the full text) to Apple’s servers for translation. After the translation is complete, Apple will discard the contents of the web page.

Note: The availability of translations and the number of languages that can be translated may vary by country or region.

If the web page was not viewed in Private Browsing mode, then Safari will also send the web page’s address to Apple. Apple will store the address for up to five years to improve Apple’s products, services and technologies. Since Apple does not store the contents of web pages you translate, only publicly accessible web pages will be used to improve Apple’s products, services and technologies.

Web page contents and addresses sent to Apple aren’t associated with your Apple ID, email address, or other data Apple may have from your use of other Apple services.

In order to provide you with a better browsing experience, after translating a particular web page, other web pages in the same domain that you visit within the same tab may also be translated. Safari will stop automatically translating when you visit a web page that is no longer in the same original language, or a web page on a different domain.
