The donkeys: 'walk through a cloud'.

"Walk Through a Cloud"

The Donkeys. Andy Clymer hide caption

The Donkeys.

The Donkeys' lazy, country-tinged Americana sound is a perfect match for the band's San Diego home. The group's second album, Living on the Other Side , is a simple and soothing summer set — music for driving with the top down, sunbathing in the sand and napping in a hammock. The sound isn't anything too fancy: The group just makes sweet, straightforward music to slowly sway to as the waves roll in.

Living on the Other Side 's first single, "Walk Through a Cloud," mixes elements of blues, classic rock, and psychedelia with a countrified sound for a '60s-style pop song. The track's vocal harmonies give it a sing-along quality that conveys a sort of childish innocence. The effect is a refreshing, upbeat, carefree feel that's entirely relaxing.

Though the album doesn't venture far beyond this sunny sound, it's highlighted by a few gems. It can be easy to lose yourself in the jammy, blues-inspired guitar riffs of "Traverse Wine" and "Downtown Jenny," or the organ drones and floating guitar solo of "Dolphin Center." The album seems to drift by as if on a sea breeze.

Living on the Other Side marks The Donkeys' first release on the Dead Oceans record label. The band will tour heavily this September in support of the new record, playing 16 coast-to-coast shows.

U2 Sends Taylor Swift Flowers to Welcome Her for Dublin Eras Tour Shows: 'Already Feeling That Irish Hospitality'

The rock legends jokingly asked the pop star to leave some of their hometown "standing" after her trio of shows at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium this weekend

Taylor Swift got the best warm welcome to Ireland ahead of her Eras Tour shows this weekend.

On Friday, June 28, just a few hours before her first show, the “So Long, London” singer, 34, posted a photo on her Instagram Stories that showed a bouquet of bright-colored flowers and a sweet note from iconic rock band U2 .

“Dear Taylor, welcome back to our hometown…leave some of it standing?!!!!” the legendary musicians wrote. They signed it, “Your Irish fan club, Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry.”

taylor swift/instagram

Swift responded to the band’s letter, writing over her photo, “Already feeling that Irish hospitality!! @u2, thanks for always being the classiest & coolest.” She concluded her caption by adding the Irish flag emoji.

This isn’t the first time the pop star has received a nice gesture from U2. In 2018, for her pair of Reputation concerts at Croke Park in Dublin, the rock group sent her a bouquet of red roses and a note again signed, "From your Irish fan club.”

The “Karma” musician posted a photo of the flowers and the cute note on her Instagram page and captioned it, “Walked into my dressing room to find roses from @U2 and I WAS NOT READY FOR IT. I LOVE U2 I LOVE IRELAND LETS DO THIS CROKE PARK!!!"

Swift will perform at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium from June 28 to June 30, with Paramore opening each show. Her trio of concerts follows her epic three-show run at London’s Wembley Stadium June 21-23, which brought out all the stars — and even the Royals ! — plus her NFL boyfriend, Travis Kelce ; only this time, he joined her onstage.

During her final show on Sunday, the pop superstar shocked concertgoers by bringing out her dapper football pro beau to participate in her "I Can Do It with a Broken Heart" outfit change. Wearing a full tuxedo and top hat , the Kansas City Chiefs player stepped in for one of Swift’s dancers to carry her during the segment.

Gareth Cattermole/TAS24/Getty

The surprise moment — which included Kelce showing off some of his signature dance moves — energized the roaring crowd of Swifties and even had Swift herself “cracking up/swooning” over her boyfriend’s stage debut .

After her stops in Dublin, the Grammy winner will next head to Amsterdam, Zürich, Milan, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg and Munich for her July shows. Per Swift’s confirmation , the sweeping Eras Tour will finally conclude in Vancouver in December.

Eddie Murphy revealed in a new interview with Collider that he has already begun voice recording for “ Shrek 5 ” and will next do a Donkey spinoff movie. Variety reported in April 2023 that Universal and DreamWorks Animation were eyeing a fifth “Shrek” movie with the original cast (Murphy as Donkey, Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona) and a Donkey spinoff film for Murphy. It now seems like those projects are definitely happening, according to Murphy.

Variety has reached out to Universal for comment.

Related stories, tony ratings have a long gap to clear, despite efforts to mimic larger shows.

Murphy clarified that both movies are not being made at the time, adding: “I started recording ‘Shrek,’ I think it’s coming out in 2025. And we’re doing a Donkey one next.”

The “Shrek” franchise released four feature films between 2001 and 2010. The original “Shrek” turned DreamWorks Animation into a powerhouse studio with its $487 million worldwide gross. The movie became the first Oscar winner in the animated feature category. “Shrek 2” grossed $928 million. Both films competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

While “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After” earned less acclaim than the first two movies, they still managed to gross $813 million and $752 million worldwide, respectively.

Murphy told Entertainment Tonight in 2023 that he’d do a fifth “Shrek” movie “in two seconds” if he was ever asked to reprise Donkey.

“I love Donkey,” Murphy said. “You know, they did ‘Puss in Boots’ movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey. … I would do a Donkey movie. I would do another ‘Shrek’ in two seconds.”

The most recent “Shrek” universe movie was 2022’s “Puss in the Boots: The Last Wish,” which Universal Pictures release in theaters to $485 million worldwide.

Doobie Brothers Phoenix concert rocked every hit that stirs your '70s soul

the donkeys band tour

Michael McDonald rejoining the fold just in time for the 50th Anniversary Tour was a big deal for obvious reasons to anyone who grew up in the ‘70s when the Doobie Brothers ruled the airwaves with an endless string of pop hits that continue to define their place in music history.

He hadn’t done a Doobie Brothers tour since 1996 before they launched their anniversary tour in 2021 . He’s an amazing talent. And he did sing lead on several of their biggest singles, from “Takin’ it To the Streets” to “Minute by Minute” and “What a Fool Believes,” which took them to the top a second time on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The anniversary tour played Phoenix twice. And they’re still out there touring — and recording! — with McDonald, who seemed right at home from the time he strolled onstage and took his place behind the keyboards when the tour hit Footprint Center on Wednesday, June 26.

Doobie Brothers setlist: Every song Michael McDonald and crew did in Phoenix

From 'China Grove' to 'Black Water,' Doobie Brothers played the hits

McDonald shared the vocal spotlight with two founding members, guitarists Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons, with Johnston out front on such crowd-pleasing classics as “Listen to the Music,” “Long Train Runnin’” and “China Grove” and Simmons at the wheel on a spirited “Jesus is Just Alright” and “Black Water,” the Doobies’ first chart-topping entry on the Hot 100.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Even John McFee took a turn in the spotlight, swapping vocals with McDonald on the soulful “One Step Closer.”

All three guitarists — Johnston, Simmons and McFee, a multi-instrumentalist who nailed the blues-harp break on “Long Train Runnin’” and the fiddle on “Black Water” — had a chance to shine on lead guitar.

Michael McDonald's keyboard riffing was a delight

McDonald’s keyboard playing was fantastic.

A karaoke machine would probably have docked McDonald points for all the liberties he took with the delivery of his greatest hits, approaching “What a Fool Believes” and “Minute by Minute” as opportunities to re-explore his signature songs with the looseness of phrasing a jazz singer might have applied to re-interpreting those songs.

But here's the thing. He sounded great. As did Johnston, whose voice is apparently ageless, and Simmons.

The four official members were joined by touring bassist John Cowan, drummer Ed Toth, percussionist Mark Quinones and saxophone hero Marc Russo, whose habit of ending his solos really wailing on those high notes, often drew spontaneous ovations from the audience, especially on “Eyes of Silver” and “Long Train Runnin’.”

The video screen behind the stage was often filled with footage of the Doobie Brothers in the ‘70s — performance clips as well as old home movies of the band on tour in a plane that said the Doobieliner during “What a Fool Believes.”

It was especially thrilling to watch Simmons solo along to a younger version of himself on “Dependin’ on You.”

As long as they kept the focus on the Doobie Brothers, the visuals were great. The scenes of couples of a certain age embracing during “Here to Love You” felt uncomfortably close to a TV commercial on how you, too, can conquer erectile dysfunction with a hint of Folgers in your cup. Which is to say it felt a little corny.

Kicking off the Phoenix concert with 'Take Me in Your Arms'

They started the show on a high note with their cover of the Holland-Dozier-Holland standard “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While),” a Motown classic first recorded by Kim Weston that became one of the Doobie Brothers' biggest hits.

Before the set was through, they’d touched on nearly all the staples you’d expect while dusting off a highlight of their latest album, “Liberte,” a song called “Cannonball” that Simmons said he chose because he wanted to do a motorcycle song.

They also did “World Gone Wrong,” the title track to an album from 2010 that definitely lived up to its introduction of “We’re gonna take you down to New Orleans."

The Doobies held their heaviest hitters for the back half of the concert, bringing the set to a crowd-pleasing finish with “Jesus Is Just Alright,” “What a Fool Believes,” “Long Train Runnin’” and “China Grove” (which brought more people to their feet than any other song they’d done until that point)

Then they came back to open their encore with another of their most enduring hits, “Black Water,” which became a massive singalong. An instrumental version of “Amazing Grace” by Russo and McDonald gave way to a suitably spirited “Takin’ It to the Streets” before they signed with one final classic, “Listen to the Music.”

The Robert Cray Band opened for the Doobie Brothers in Phoenix

The Robert Cray Band opened with a set of truly soulful blues and R&B led by Cray, who squeezed out some amazing solos on guitar with testing the limits of his vocal range on several highlights of his set, including a slow-burning cover of “Sittin’ on Top of the World” and a suitably fiery version of “Hot.”

He’s got a great band, from George Sluppick swinging the beat with authority behind the kit to keyboard player Dover “White Cliffs” Weinberg coming through with something guaranteed to grab you by the collar every time he stepped into the spotlight, up to and including that ridiculously high note on the organ at the end of “Time Makes Two.”
