Adventure Vacations for Single Seniors

If you love discovering new sites, exploring new scenery, and getting acquainted with the local flora and fauna, we recommend adventure-themed trips for seniors traveling alone. Depending on where you go, you can participate in guided tour options—or you can take the trip into your own hands and explore at your leisure.

The best part about adventure vacations for senior singles is that you have loads of options, both state-side and worldwide.

California's Pacific Coast Highway

One of the best state-side adventure trips a single senior could take is exploring California’s Pacific Coast Highway. This trip is a splendid opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty of the West Coast from the comfort of your own car.

The most popular way to experience this trip is to start in San Francisco and end in San Diego. While you drive, you’ll take in breathtaking views of the Bay Area, local surf towns, rocky coastlines, vineyards, quirky roadside attractions, and so much more. As you make your way to San Diego, we highly recommend stopping to enjoy the fresh seafood in local restaurants, taking a break to watch the sunset, and even stopping for a few days to enjoy California wine country.

If you’re looking to make your own agenda and move at your own pace, this trip will allow you to go when you’re ready, slow down when you want to explore more, and provide you with some unforgettable scenery every step of the day. Sites like California Crossings have DIY itineraries or you can look to book a guided tour through companies like Off the Beaten Path .

If you’re up for an adventure but looking for someone else to handle the specific logistics and details of planning, we recommend finding a tour group designed for seniors over the age of 50 or 60. One great option is ElderTreks , a global adventure travel company designed exclusively for people over the age of 60.

What we love about ElderTreks for single travelers over 60 is that you might start off the adventure alone, but you’ll meet a wonderful group of senior travelers along the journey. The best part of taking an adventure with ElderTreks is that they’ll handle all of the logistics—all you’ll have to do is pay one lump sum for your travel. Your meals, accommodations, tips, and transportation are all included, making it a very easy vacation to budget for and easily one of the best vacations for single seniors.

Explore Ireland by Rail and Road

Looking to soak in some lush and historic views? We recommend taking a jaunt through Ireland. With its well-established railroad lines, you can sit back and enjoy the scenery from a cozy train. No matter where you end up, you’ll discover abbeys, castles, coastal vistas, and picturesque postcard towns.

If you’re looking for modern sites, you can travel to major cities and soak up their artistic takes on food and more. It’s fairly easy to get around Ireland as most locals are bilingual and can provide you with English directions.

There are a number of railroad companies that provide tours, including Railroad Tours Ireland , which offers two nights in Killarney, two nights in Galway, and two nights in Dublin.

Tour Vacations for Singles Over 60

If you’re looking for a vacation for singles over 60 where all you have to do is show up, consider a tour-based vacation. With many options to choose from in the United States and the world as a whole, you’ll enjoy a guided tour or adventure with the opportunity to socialize with a larger group.

The Himalayas

Are you someone who loves breathtaking views and staying active? Join a tour group going to the Himalayas! These mountains are the perfect place to explore the world through a peaceful, relaxing adventure.

Most tour groups provide a mix of activities including hiking, spa treatments, yoga retreats, and meditation. As you’re traveling with a group, this trip can be a particularly good fit for a single senior woman. Plus, one perk of traveling with a guided tour is that you can make new friends with other travelers whom you may not have encountered in any other circumstances.

A trip like this is sure to lead you to your own inner zen — making it one of the best vacations for singles over 60 who are looking to do some soul searching amidst beautiful scenery and culture. You can learn more from Escape Himalaya , TrekkingMart , and Active Adventures .

Machu Picchu in Peru

Your retirement is the perfect time to visit some of the world’s most historic and magnificent sites. Of course, Machu Picchu makes the list as one of the best vacation spots for single seniors because it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Sit e—and one of the Seven Wonders of the World !

Since it’s such a well-established travel destination, there are loads of travel groups that come to share the magic of this ancient Incan citadel and temple. With a large number of group tour options, you can find one that will have just the right level of physical activity for you.

There are opportunities to hike the trail or enjoy a more leisurely view from one of the many rail services. No matter what kind of vacation you’re looking for, there is something for everyone at Machu Picchu.

Kruger National Park, Africa

If you’re an animal lover or have always enjoyed watching nature documentaries about Africa’s incredible wildlife, consider a guided tour to Kruger National Park in Africa. It’s every animal lover’s dream to go on an authentic African safari to see the “big five” and Kruger National Park is known for its sightings of elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and buffalos.

Within the park, you can experience the African wild in comfort. With many lodging options, you can book a tour that will grant you your dream vacation complete with all the amenities you’re looking for and more.

And when you book a tour-style trip, it allows you to experience the location—but with the extra element of community, you’ll get to build friendships with other solo travelers over 60 and maybe plan a few more trips together!

Resort Trips For Seniors Traveling Alone

If you’re looking for the best holidays for single travelers over 60, we recommend considering resorts or all-inclusive vacations. There are thousands of all-inclusive vacations for single seniors all over the U.S. and the world, making your destination options almost as endless as the amenities list some of these places offer.

Resort vacations for single senior citizens are the perfect opportunity to relax however you want, play golf, read books, or soak in the sun by a picture-perfect pool or white-sand beach. What we love most about resorts is that you can move through your vacation at your own pace, doing exactly what you want and nothing you don’t.

Lone Mountain Ranch: Big Sky, Montana

If you’re looking for a wild west experience and one of the best senior vacations for singles, Lone Mountain Ranch must be considered. It’s about 18 miles from Yellowstone National Park, and the ranch is surrounded by the Montana Rockies. Just an hour away from the Bozeman Airport, it’s easy and accessible to reach.

With 27 historic cabins, you can find one that’s the perfect size for your needs. Plus, each cabin is equipped with an authentic wood stove, rustic furniture, stunning views, and tucked neatly away into a forested setting.

At Lone Mountain, you can go horseback riding on trails led by experienced cowboys to ensure a memorable and safe experience for all riders. You can also take a guided hike, go mountain biking, or even settle into the stream for some fly fishing. With the water nearby, you can take a canoe or a kayak to see some sights or spend the day relaxing in a tube on your way down the Madison River. They even have outdoor yoga classes, archery, ax throwing, and guided day trips to Yellowstone.

If you’re an active and adventurous single senior who loves nature, Lone Mountain Ranch is one of the best vacation spots for single seniors.

Cavallo Point: Sausalito, California

If you’re looking for a little bit of everything, try exploring Cavallo Point in Sausalito, California. Located at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, Cavallo Point is inspired by the 75,000 acres of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

What makes Cavallo Point stand out as one of the best vacations for single seniors is its stunning views, top-notch dining, and a wide assortment of cultural experiences. With a mix of historical architecture and contemporary design, you’ll stay in a room with a gorgeous view—and you’ll be just minutes away from the San Francisco area.

By staying at Cavallo Point, you can go biking, hiking, running, walking, and enjoy all that the Bay Area has to offer. With lots of outdoor fire pits, take in the views under the stars one night and fill your days with guided hikes, yoga classes, seaplane or helicopter tours, or a sunset cruise. This area is also home to a Healing Arts Center & Spa , so don’t forget to soak in some extra restoration and zen with a spa treatment or two.

Carlisle Bay, Antigua

Carlisle Bay is your classic beach resort located in the Caribbean. Known for being a luxurious location to vacation, Carlisle Bay offers both family and adult-only accommodations, making it a great place for single travelers over 60 to explore with friends or solo for a relaxing and refreshing time.

What truly elevates Carlisle Bay is the wonderful amenities. Their facilities are complete with immaculate tennis courts, spas, fitness centers, and outdoor yoga pavilions. Plus, you’ll enjoy extensive dining options, including four restaurants and three bars on the resort grounds so you can kick back and enjoy yourself. All-inclusive packages make this a seamless and stress-free vacation spot for single seniors over 60.

Vacations for Single Senior Women

If you’re hesitant to take a single trip as a senior lady, we’re here to ease your mind. Although traveling as a single senior woman can be overwhelming, the benefits will far outweigh any worries that you may have. Vacationing as a single senior woman offers you the freedom to enjoy yourself fully. Try planning a trip around your favorite hobbies or experiencing the destination you’ve always dreamed of.

Alaska, USA

If you are a single senior woman over the age of 60 living in the United States, Alaska offers an incredibly exciting vacation—and one that isn’t even out of the country. Enjoy giant whales and sea animals, grizzly and polar bears, and the glaciers in all their glory. Alaskan cruise ships provide accessible accommodations, highlighting the beauty of Alaska’s port cities, Juneau and Sitka.

If you’re less enthused about spending your time on a cruise, consider the Aurora Winter Train , which travels weekends between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Spring is a particularly popular time to enjoy the train as you can watch the Iditarod Sled Dog Race festivities happening in Anchorage.

Bungalows Key Largo: Key Largo, Florida

If there’s nothing you love more than a tropical oasis, consider Bungalows in Key Largo. This all-inclusive, adults-only resort is a magical and relaxing place to stay. Choose from a waterfront bungalow on the tranquil Gulf of Mexico or a bungalow perched among the lush botanical gardens, complete with a soaking tub and an outdoor shower.

At Bungalows, you can choose just how active you’d like to be. Try relaxing watersports, such as kayaking or snorkeling in the protected bay. Or join a beachfront yoga class before visiting the Zen Garden’s Spa steam room, sauna, or massage. To end the day, watch the sunset on the beach or spend your time on a catamaran cruise.

From the bustling downtown Sydney to the rural Outback, Australia is a great country to visit if you’re a single senior woman over 60. Odyssey Traveller offers several senior-friendly group tours, including one to the Southern Highlands and Canberra, to the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney, a tour of Melbourne, and so many more.

As a country, Australia has a charmingly laid-back atmosphere. And thanks to its vast size, Australia offers something for everyone. Try snorkeling or scuba diving near the Great Barrier Reef, enjoy some of the best beaches in the world, and live the relaxed Australian lifestyle.

Vacations for Single Senior Men

If you’re a single senior man over the age of 60, consider planning your own ideal vacation. Many men likely have their own idea of what makes the perfect vacation—so planning a solo trip focused on your own unique interests and hobbies can be a greatly rewarding experience.

Lions Dive Beach Resort, Curacao

For the single senior man over 60 with a love of activity and adventure, look no further than Lions Dive Beach Resort in Curacao. With a hotel located directly on the beach, Lions Dive Beach Resort offers a number of outdoor activities, including diving, swimming, mountain biking, and hiking. If you like scuba diving, you can get your scuba certificate at Lions Dive—and the resort will coordinate your lessons and training.

Plus, the idyllic resort features breathtaking views of the Caribbean sea, several delicious restaurants, and plenty of recommendations on how to spend your senior trip as a single.

Big Cedar Lodge: Ridgedale, Missouri

Although you might not immediately think of vacationing in Missouri, Big Cedar Lodge is a wilderness resort in the Ozark Mountains with an incredible list of amenities, activities, and more. Overlooking Table Rock Lake, Big Cedar Lodge offers cozy accommodations, spectacular restaurants, two full-service marinas, five golf courses, an activity center, a relaxing spa, and countless outdoor activities.

Whether you love golfing, skeet shopping, archery, or hiking, Big Cedar Lodge has something for everyone.

Sedona, Arizona

For active seniors looking for a perfect setting to explore, try Sedona. Surrounded by majestic red rocks and no shortage of hiking trails, Sedona is often hailed as one of the most beautiful areas to visit in the United States.

Although Sedona is well known for its wonderful hiking, biking, and outdoor activities, you can also enjoy Jeep tours or hot air balloon rides to fully immerse yourself in all that the city has to offer. Less than a two-hour drive from the Phoenix airport, Sedona is definitely somewhere to visit if you’re a senior single over 60 looking for a relaxing but invigorating adventure.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort, South Carolina

If there’s nothing you love more than golfing, consider a trip to Kiawah Island Golf Resort on a stunning barrier island off the coast of South Carolina. You’ll probably remember Kiawah from the 2021 PGA Championship. The Resort features five spectacular courses, including Turtle Point designed by the one and only Jack Nicklaus.

Planning an entire vacation centered around golf is a wonderful vacation for single men. Plus, you’ll be close to Charleston so if you want to spend the day downtown shopping or taking in the local sights, it’s convenient and easy to access.

Tips for Seniors Traveling Alone

If you’re new to traveling alone as a senior over 60, it might feel daunting or overwhelming—but the benefits of traveling as a senior solo are countless. Here are a few tips for seniors traveling alone:

  • Start small. One of the easiest ways to get comfortable traveling on your own as a senior is to start small. Pick a few local destinations in your comfort zone—and plan your itinerary. Once you’ve done a local trip, or even a day trip or two, you’ll likely feel more confident and self-assured. If there’s a more intense trip on your bucket list, you’ll be well-prepared for it.
  • Try something new. If you’re in your retirement years and adventuring without a set schedule, don’t hold yourself back from trying something new. Have you always wanted to try something in particular but never did? Now is your perfect chance to explore and experiment.
  • Use technology. Although there might be a learning curve when it comes to new technologies, relying on tech during your travels can be a huge help. From scheduling a ride-share service such as Uber or Lyft from your phone to checking in for your flight with one tap, using technology as a senior single traveling can help alleviate stress and extra work.
  • Make friends. If you have hesitation about traveling alone, consider a guided tour group that caters to senior citizens. Although you may arrive and depart alone, being in a group situation will provide you with friends and acquaintances to spend time with, enjoy a meal together, or even go for a hike or outdoor excursion together.
  • Listen to your gut. When traveling to new areas, pay attention to your surroundings and trust your gut. Try to stay in well-lit, well-populated areas and remain in public spaces. Another great way to support your overall safety is to arrive during the daytime—avoid scheduling your arrival after dusk falls.

With a vibrant evening atmosphere, discover exciting street performers, eclectic restaurants, and neat shops.

historic trips for singles over 60

Though Utrecht is a larger city with excellent amenities, it also offers the charm of a smaller town. This medieval city in the Netherlands consists of lovely canals, well-preserved ancient architecture, and a quaint ambiance that is ideal for exploring by foot.

Take a leisurely stroll by the old canal in the city center, and admire the picturesque backdrop, the ancient houses, as well as the cafes and shops. If you prefer to venture out onto the actual canals, kayak and boat rentals are available.

What Are Singles Cruises for Seniors?

If you’re a senior who enjoys solo travel and meeting new people, you might want to book a singles cruise. These adventures can be a great way for older adults to enjoy traveling alone at surprisingly affordable prices. Beyond singles cruises, you can also look into general cruise lines that cater to the older set.

Pro Tip: To learn more about my favorite cruises, read my guide to the best cruises for seniors .

The Advantages of Singles Cruises for Seniors

Singles cruises for seniors offer many benefits, such as discounted room prices, wine tasting, and onboard entertainment –– not to mention plenty of opportunities to meet other singles.

Less planning

Since most singles cruises are all-inclusive, you don’t have to worry about last-minute itinerary planning. Most singles cruises provide a day-by-day itinerary with information on daily activities, events, and excursions. For those who want an adventurous time without having to plan, a cruise is a great option. Personally, planning travel makes me anxious, so I love handing the process over to the professionals.

Meeting new people

A singles cruise is designed to cater to people of all ages who are looking to meet new people. If you’re recently divorced or looking for a new relationship, a singles cruise offers an opportunity to meet others in a similar position. These cruises will often have programs like speed dating and dances to help facilitate interactions. Plus, some cruises cater to singles specifically, giving you a discount or “single supplement.”

Courses and events

Singles cruises offer plenty of great activities, such as wine tastings, chef-prepared meals, dancing, pool parties, concerts, and group exercises. All of this helps make it easier to meet new people.

Viking offers river, ocean, and expedition voyages on all seven continents. I could choose from a variety of cruise destinations, including Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Asia, and Australia. As the world’s leading small-ship cruise line, Viking Ocean Cruises has a fleet of new, state-of-the-art ocean ships, ranging from Viking Star to Viking Saturn. Each ocean ship can carry up to 930 adult guests for an intimate experience and longer overnight stays at ports. With so many adults on a boat, it was easy for me to meet people, especially at meal times.

To book a cruise, I simply visited the Viking website and selected the region, departure date, and duration of my stay. If you’re looking to travel to Scandinavia and Northern Europe for a duration of 12 days, you can choose your sail date and include a promo code to get the best deals. You can also select the number of guests and specify the type of stateroom or suite you would like to book.

In addition to river and small-ship cruises, Tauck offers guided land tours in destinations like Africa, Canada, Israel and Jordan, and Latin America.

With 149 years in business, Holland America Line offers 19 cruise destinations with over 473 ports. If you’re looking for an affordable cruise option, I recommend traveling with Holland America Line. Its Worry-Free Promise program gives guests the chance to change their cruise plans or cancel for any reason up to 30 days before departure if you or a travel party tests positive for COVID-19.

Holland America Line has a fleet of 11 classic ships with destinations and ports in Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, Asia, and more. You can choose from seven- to 133-day cruise trips, depending on your destination and travel needs. The longest cruise goes from pole to pole, leaving and departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. If you’re a single senior, you’ll love the amenities the cruise ship offers, such as classical cruise ship music, theatrical shows, concerts, and other live entertainment.

Some of the additional features of this cruise line include spacious suites and staterooms, along with unique dining options and a casino. You can also use its free mobile-friendly app to personalize your cruise experience and browse your planned activities for the day. Depending on the cruise ship you choose, you can also participate in wine tastings and cooking demonstrations.

Did You Know: Before you head for the sea, be sure to have your travel insurance in order.

6. Solos Holidays - Social Activities

Solos Holidays

  • Caters to solo travelers
  • Great onboard entertainment
  • Spacious rooms
  • Ample social activities

Cost: $261+ per person

Solos Holidays caters to solo travelers who enjoy going to exciting destinations while meeting new people. Based in London, this company focuses on “singles holidays” and offers a wide selection of destinations across the globe. Some of the cruise destinations include Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa.

I recommend going on A Taste of the Fjords. I departed from London and spent seven nights in Norway (prices start at $1,420 per person). On the ship, dining and entertainment options were plentiful, and the destinations — Bergen, Flam, and Stavanger —  were beautiful and picturesque. Plus, as a single, it was nice being with a group of eight and a tour leader, as I didn’t feel lonely. This is one of the more affordable cruise options, which is always appreciated.

7. Cunard - Great Onboard Entertainment

Cunard

  • Low starting prices
  • Orchestra performances
  • Onboard libraries and gyms
  • Planetarium shows

Cost: $699+ per person

Cunard provides luxury cruise services across the globe. In fact, in the past, it has had esteemed guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplain onboard its ships. Depending on the type of vacation and travel experience you’re looking for, you can anticipate spending around $699 per person for an English cruise to up to $2,199 per person for a Caribbean cruise. This is incredibly affordable, as cruises can cost tens of thousands of dollars, which is not in my budget. Here are the prices I saw when I looked in October 2023:

When you book a cruise with Cunard, you’ll enjoy amenities such as afternoon tea, live orchestra performances, and events moderated by prolific speakers. In addition to spacious open decks and Broadway-style shows, seniors will enjoy a packed itinerary of events and activities.

Other features include twice-daily turndown services, concierge services, personal butlers, great dining options, and complimentary room service. Guests can also enjoy group dance classes, planetarium shows, and access to the library and gym facilities.

We recommend choosing one of its seven-day transatlantic cruises onboard its Queen Mary 2. The best part is you’ll have access to live performances from the Royal Shakespeare Company, along with various accommodations to make your stay enjoyable. Cruises start at $849 per person for a Christmas 2023 voyage.

8. Riviera River Cruises - Great for Solo Travelers

Riviera River Cruises

  • Luxurious amenities
  • Niche destinations
  • Flexible trips

Cost: $899+ per month

Riviera River Cruises offers several river cruises in Europe and other destinations around the world. Solo travelers can expect to pay around $899 to $5,479 for longer-duration trips.

If you enjoy solo traveling without sharing a room, then we’d recommend the Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg River Cruise for Solo Travelers. This eight-day cruise starts at $2,449 per person and features eight guided tours, a live classical quartet recital, daily meals, and five-star services. For this particular cruise, you’ll embark in Cologne and visit destinations like the Rhine Gorge and the historic Mainz port. Plus, there are departures aimed at solo travelers specifically, which start at $2,749 per person. Unfortunately, there’s no single supplement, but there are also no additional fees; I paid the listed price, which was a welcome departure from other cruise lines and their many hidden fees.

When you choose Riviera River Cruises, you’ll enjoy amenities and features like daily morning and afternoon tea and coffee, along with full daily meals, complimentary Wi-Fi, and the option to extend your cruise. Other benefits include access to an expert cruise director and concierge services to help make for an enjoyable stay.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

  • Great discounts
  • Spacious accommodations

Cost: $6,074+ per person

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers all-inclusive luxury travel around the world, with over 450 ports of call. Each ship can carry up to 750 guests, with destinations in Africa, Arabia, Alaska, Asia, and the Mediterranean. The average price with the single supplement ranges from $6,074 per person from Cape Town to Rio De Janeiro to as high as $12,562 for an 18-day cruise from Sydney to Singapore.

Not every cruise line offers discounted prices for singles, so although these prices are on the higher side, they’re a good option for singles who want a more luxurious experience and have the funds for it.

Some of the benefits of choosing a cruise from Regent Seven Seas Cruises include all-inclusive fares, free open bars, and unlimited beverages, along with free access to specialty restaurants. You’ll also receive free unlimited internet and up to a 50 percent discount for a reduced single supplement for select suite categories.

Safety Considerations for Solo Senior Travelers

Safety is paramount for solo senior travelers. Whether you’re embarking on a solo adventure or joining a tour, taking certain precautions can ensure a safe and enjoyable travel experience. Here are some important safety considerations and tips for safe solo travel for seniors :

1. Travel Insurance

It is highly recommended for solo senior travelers to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost or stolen belongings. Having travel insurance provides peace of mind and financial protection in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

2. Stay Connected

While traveling alone, it is crucial to stay connected with your loved ones. Keep them informed about your itinerary, including dates, destinations, and accommodations. Regularly check-in with family or friends so that they know you’re safe. In case of emergencies, having someone who knows your whereabouts is essential.

3. Research Destinations

Before traveling to a new destination, it’s important to research the area thoroughly. Familiarize yourself with local customs, laws, and potential safety concerns. Reading travel advisories, reviews, and recommendations can provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions.

4. Choose Well-Reviewed Accommodations

When selecting accommodations, opt for well-reviewed hotels, resorts, or vacation rentals. Look for places that prioritize safety and have positive feedback from fellow travelers. Check for security features such as well-lit entrances, secure locks, and 24-hour front desk service.

5. Be Aware of Local Customs and Safety Precautions

Respect and adhere to local customs and traditions wherever you travel. By being aware of local norms, you can avoid potentially unsafe situations and show respect to the local culture. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the safety precautions recommended for the destination, such as avoiding certain areas or taking precautions against pickpocketing.

6. Consider Traveling in Groups or Joining Guided Tours

For added safety and peace of mind, consider traveling in groups or joining guided tours specifically designed for seniors. Traveling with a group provides an additional layer of security, companionship, and the expertise of knowledgeable guides. It also offers the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals and share memorable experiences.

7. Remain Vigilant and Trust Your Instincts

While exploring new destinations, always trust your instincts and remain vigilant. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded or unfamiliar areas. If something feels unsafe or uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation. Your intuition can often guide you towards making the right decisions for your safety.

Remember, solo senior travel can be an incredibly rewarding and empowering experience. By considering these safety tips and taking necessary precautions, you can confidently embark on your solo adventures and create lifelong memories.

Choosing the Right Tour for Solo Seniors

When it comes to selecting a tour for solo seniors, there are several important factors to consider. By taking the time to evaluate your travel preferences and match them with the right tour options, you can ensure a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect tour:

  • Consider your travel preferences: Think about what type of travel experience you prefer. Do you enjoy a more structured itinerary or do you prefer more flexibility and freedom? Consider if you prefer group activities or if you enjoy time alone to explore at your own pace.
  • Assess activity levels: Take into account your physical capabilities and choose a tour that matches your activity level. Some tours may involve extensive walking or hiking, while others may be more relaxed and leisurely.
  • Check accommodations: Look into the quality and accessibility of accommodations provided by the tour. Ensure that they meet your comfort and safety needs.
  • Evaluate group size: Consider if you prefer a smaller or larger group. Smaller groups can often provide a more intimate and personalized experience, while larger groups may offer more opportunities to connect with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Research expert tour guides: Find out about the expertise and knowledge of the tour guides. Experienced guides can enhance your travel experience by providing valuable insights and information about the destinations.
  • Read reviews and recommendations: Take the time to read reviews and recommendations from other travelers who have taken the tours you are considering. Their experiences can provide valuable insights into the quality and suitability of the tour.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Learn more about Intrepid's COVID-19 policy

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Tours and Cruises for Single Seniors

single senior trips

Traveling alone can be quite difficult, especially if you're a senior citizen, but fortunately, there are a number of single-friendly cruises and tours for people 60 and over.

Normally when you book a tour or cruise, you pay a per-person, double occupancy price; if you’re traveling alone, you are charged a higher price, normally called a single supplement. The single supplement is usually quite high—up to 50 percent of the trip cost—because it is designed to recoup the income that would have been generated by a second traveler.

Fortunately, some tour operators recognize that many seniors are solo travelers and now offer "single-friendly" trips. Single-friendly tour groups and cruise lines offer no-cost or low-cost single supplements or provide “guaranteed share” options. By participating in a guaranteed share program, you agree to be matched with a roommate, nearly always of the same sex and smoking preference. In return, your single supplement is waived. Should your tour operator or cruise line be unable to match you with a roommate, you’ll still pay either a reduced single supplement or none at all.

Solo Traveler

Solo Traveler's Janice Waugh and Tracey Nesbitt share their solo travel adventures, tips, and tricks on their appropriately-named blog "Solo Traveler." Whether you're looking for information on where to go or how to avoid the single supplement, this nuts-and-bolts blog can help you plan your trip. The Solo Traveler Deals page highlights upcoming trips aimed at solo travelers.

Singles Travel International

Singles Travel International offers trips and cruises for all age ranges, but they also offer cruises for singles ages 50 and over several times each year. You can go on safari or get away for a weekend to explore Italy, and you get to choose either a room sharing option or higher-cost private room. Smokers, snorers, and travelers who use a CPAP machine may need to pay for a higher-cost single room if a roommate cannot be found for them. Some trips take you far from medical assistance. Carefully review the itinerary details before you book your tour.

Silversea Cruises is a luxury cruise line that offers reduced single supplements on some of its cruises. Silversea also has a Gentlemen Hosts program on some cruises; single women who want to eat or dance with someone can enjoy the companionship of a polite, polished gentleman.

Solos Holidays

Solos Holidays offers international trips and activity trips for singles in three different age ranges: over 30, over 40, and over 50—as well as tours for singles of all ages. Because this tour operator is based in the UK, trips depart from London and are priced in British pounds. They offer single rooms and private facilities, and most trips do not have a single supplement.

Tauck World Discovery

Tauck, a luxury tour operator, offers group tours, riverboat and small ship cruises, and rail tours combined with motorcoach tours or cruises. On some trips and river cruises, Tauck reduces or eliminates its single supplement. Check Tauck's Traveling Solo page for an up-to-date listing of discounts on solo travel adventures.

9 Best Vacation Destinations for Seniors

Whether you're looking for a relaxing retreat or an active getaway, these resorts offer something for everyone.

single senior trips

After retirement, it's time to treat yourself to a well-deserved vacation. Without time constraints, you can enjoy longer stays or slower travel as you visit multiple regions, a variety of landscapes, or national parks you've been meaning to visit. You might also appreciate the convenience of a destination resort where you can enjoy dining and most activities on site.

There are plenty of resorts designed with mature adults in mind, but if you're planning to meet up with family, choose one with facilities geared toward multigenerational groups. For many retirees, a good vacation provides a balance of outdoor pursuits, health and wellness, and pampering, so we've selected places based on these criteria. Here are nine of the best vacations for seniors in the U.S., whether you prefer a verdant mountain retreat, a nostalgic coastal escape, or a glamorous desert oasis.

Suncadia Resort, Cle Elum, Washington

Suncadia Resort

Nestled among the Cascade Mountains on the edge of Washington's Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest , this picturesque resort offers tranquil scenery, crisp mountain air, and a variety of outdoor activities. Choose The Lodge for panoramic river and mountain views or The Inn, a plush hotel with golf course views.

At Suncadia Resort , guests can choose from a plethora of activities. Play golf, go for a hike, or try archery or axe throwing. Bikes, canoes, and kayaks are available to rent as well. If you'd prefer something less strenuous, find your inner artist with an acrylic pouring class. Begin the day with guided meditation or a fitness class followed by a spa treatment. Should the grandkids arrive for a visit, there's a pool with two slides to keep them entertained. Even the family dog can tag along to this pet-friendly property.

Big Cedar Lodge, Ridgedale, Missouri

Big Cedar Lodge

This wilderness resort in Missouri's Ozark Mountains is set in 4,600 acres of natural beauty. Big Cedar Lodge consists of three styles of accommodation: rooms within the private log cabins, luxurious cottages, or glamping and cabins at Camp Long Creek.

Five golf courses and practice facilities include 19-hole Payne's Valley, nine-hole Top of the Rock, 13-hole Mountain Top, and two 18-hole courses, Buffalo Ridge and Ozarks National. Go bowling, visit the arcade, or try a high-ropes course at Fun Mountain. Fitness classes, exercise equipment, four pools, and a personal trainer are available. With a lazy river and discovery center on-site, the grandkids will love visiting too.

Lone Mountain Ranch, Big Sky, Montana

Lone Mountain Ranch

Located near Yellowstone National Park and about an hour from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, Lone Mountain Ranch is set in the Montana Rockies. Stay in one of 25 historic log cabins, ranging from one to six bedrooms. The named cottages have stunning forest views and are outfitted with wood stoves, rustic furnishings, and full baths.

In true ranch style, there's horseback riding, with backcountry trails and experienced wranglers to ensure a memorable experience for riders of all ages. Hike with naturalist guides, go mountain biking, or enjoy fly fishing, no matter your skill level. Canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are provided if you want to explore nearby lakes. You can have an experienced guide curate an excursion to Yellowstone National Park or save on admission with a national park pass for seniors . Outdoor yoga, archery, and axe throwing are also options.

Mission Point, Mackinac Island, Michigan

Mission Point

At waterfront Mission Point , guests can stay in the Main Lodge or the Straits Lodge, which has dog-friendly options. Accommodations range from cozy rooms suitable for singles to the 1,500-square-foot Bois Blanc Suite, with ample living space, a full kitchen, and laundry facilities — ideal for longer stays.

A National Historic Landmark, Mackinac Island has a slow pace and an old-fashioned feel, partly thanks to its ban on motor vehicles. The small island can be covered on foot or in an electric wheelchair within a few hours. Relax on the resort's expansive lawn in an Adirondack chair, go on a bike ride, play tennis, or just soak in a hot tub. Guests can also book experiences like craft and culinary workshops or spa treatments at the Lakeside Spa and Salon. When you're ready to explore, stroll downtown to sample the famous local fudge, or book a horse-drawn carriage tour to be transported to another era.

Montage Palmetto Bluff, Bluffton, South Carolina

Montage Palmetto Bluff

Montage Palmetto Bluff is a two-village, 20,000-acre community by the May River that encompasses a marina, a nature preserve, and much more. Accommodation options include rooms, suites, cottages, and residences with views of moss-draped oaks and picturesque marshlands. Some guests might even choose to buy a home here.

Explore the surrounding waterways by kayak or canoe, or take a boat tour and spot dolphins cruising along with you. Visit the 120-acre shooting range for practice both indoors and outdoors. Tennis, bocce, and pickleball courts are open for play, and you can book lessons to improve your skills. Take a leisurely stroll or bike ride along tree-lined paths. Planning a trip with family? There's special programming for young guests with games, crafts, movies, scavenger hunts, and nature walks.

Cavallo Point, Sausalito, California

Cavallo Point

A converted military post, Cavallo Point is across the Golden Gate from San Francisco in Marin County. The resort is set in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area , and offers stunning scenery, world-class dining, and a variety of activities. Guests can choose from rooms and suites in the early-20th-century officers' quarters or contemporary buildings overlooking the former fort — some with breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge. You can even rent an entire historic home with a private glassed-in porch.

During the day, take a guided hike, yoga class, or sunset cruise, and spend the evening around an outdoor fire pit. Splurge on a seaplane or helicopter tour to view the bay and San Francisco skyline from the sky. The resort's Healing Arts Center & Spa provides a variety of wellness treatments, while offerings at the on-site cooking school range from globe-spanning culinary classes to oyster and wine pairings.

Arizona Biltmore, Phoenix, Arizona

Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

If classic luxury is the vacation style you're after, the Arizona Biltmore should be high on your list. Opened in 1929, the 39-acre estate at the base of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve evokes old Hollywood glamour with 705 rooms (including 100 suites, 41 cottages, 56 villas) and Frank Lloyd Wright-influenced design.

The resort features restaurants, a day spa, and seven pools including one with a 65-foot waterslide. Play golf, tennis, or pickleball, or take advantage of concierge arrangements for hot-air balloon rides, stargazing, biking, hiking, and more. At Tierra Luna Spa, select from a range of curated therapies or join a yoga or aqua aerobics class. Be sure to order a Tequila Sunrise at the Wright Bar, where the cocktail was invented.

Bungalows Key Largo, Key Largo, Florida

Bungalows Key Largo

While Florida is one of the best states to retire in , that doesn't mean you can't take a vacation close to home. The Bungalows Key Largo is an all-inclusive, adults-only resort where you can take part in a variety of activities or just relax in a poolside cabana. Stay in a waterfront room or one set among the lush gardens with a soaking tub and outdoor shower. Regardless of which view you choose, enjoy this tropical oasis.

Kayak, paddleboard, and swim in the protected bay, where you might see manatees and dolphins glide by. Don your snorkel gear to float among colorful native fish. Join a beachfront yoga class or work out at the full-service Fitness Tiki Hut. If you simply want to unwind, head to the Zen Garden Spa's steam room, sauna, or outdoor treatment cabana for a soothing massage. For the perfect end to an active or relaxing day, watch the sun go down on a catamaran cruise with a frozen cocktail in hand.

Rancho Bernardo Inn, San Diego, California

Rancho Bernardo Inn

At Rancho Bernardo Inn , guest rooms, suites, and specially designed accessible rooms are set among lush gardens for a secluded feel. Private patios and balconies offer garden, spa, or golf course views. The resort's 265 acres and San Diego's perfect weather provide opportunities for alfresco dining and outdoor activities.

Play golf at the pristine 18-hole course, relax by the pool, or have fun with lawn games like cornhole, croquet, or oversized chess. Tour the Chef's Garden to see the source of the restaurants' fresh ingredients or get some ideas for your home garden. Spend some time at the spa, take a sunset yoga class, or arrange a private session. You can interact with a trained bird of prey with a private falconry encounter. If young ones visit, they'll love the “dive-in movies” at the family pool, the well-equipped game room, and San Diego's nearby attractions.

The 10 Best Trips for Seniors and Retirees Who Love to Travel

Getaways for your golden years.

O ne of the wonderful things about hitting retirement age is having the flexibility in your schedule to go out and explore the world. If you're looking for trips for seniors, you're in luck: InsureMyTrip recently released its list of the top 10 cities around the world for senior travel, making it easier than ever for people over age 60 to find the ideal spot for their next vacation. (We think some of them sound like the best places to retire too.)

To determine the top 10 trips for seniors, the folks at InsureMyTrip evaluated a handful of travel considerations for cities around the world. Those included the ease of walking in the city, access to health care, public transportation, the number of tours for seniors and peacefulness. You'll notice that many of the best places to travel in your golden years are also great for traveling on a budget .

And before you ask: Yes, travel is a good idea for anyone who's able, regardless of whether they're age 60, 70 or beyond. In fact, travel helps keep us young. "We know loneliness affects older Americans disproportionately, and the importance of social connections only increases as we age," says James Moses, president and CEO of Road Scholar, one of our favorite tour companies . "[Travel provides] enriching, meaningful, stimulating social connections to hundreds of thousands of older adults."

Ready to find out which trips for seniors over 60 made the cut? Read on for the top picks, in order.

1. Istanbul, Turkey

Best for: Activities

Coming in at No. 1 in InsureMyTrip's list of trips for seniors is Istanbul. "Istanbul's recognition as the best destination for senior citizens highlights its cultural richness with highly rated things to do and high-quality health-care services," says Sarah Webber of InsureMyTrip. Cosmopolitan Istanbul is a cultural and ethnic melting pot, a unique city straddling two continents (Europe and Asia), with Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and modern Turkish structures—it's a skyline of domes and minarets made up of mosques, churches and synagogues, palaces, castles and towers—and of course, incredible cultural landmarks, including the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque.

The Turkish city scored highly across many of the metrics, particularly for its quality of things to do (a rating of 4.63 out of 5), health care and ease of walking.

Book a Hotel

2. Athens, Greece

Best for: Guided tours

An absolute must-visit highlight of Greece is the city of Athens, which offers a unique mixture of modern buildings and ancient monuments. You'll find bustling cosmopolitan streets lined with shops and international hotels, but turn any corner and the views of the storied Acropolis appear before you. More than 22% of the population is over 65 years old, so it's no wonder the city has a large number of guided tours aimed at senior citizens—an astounding 181, according to InsureMyTrip.

3. Rome, Italy

Best for: Ancient architecture

It's hard to talk about visiting Italy without starting at this classical city, where contemporary culture stands shoulder to shoulder with ancient architecture. Landmarks of the Eternal City include the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and you can even travel to another country by crossing into Vatican City to see the Sistine Chapel. "The inclusion of Rome in the top three destinations for senior citizens is thanks to its number of tours for senior citizens [107] and high-quality things to do, making it a dream city for many elderly travelers," says Webber. "The average age of the population [47 years old] is among the highest in the study, making it ideally suited for older travelers."

4. Bangkok, Thailand

Best for: A great deal

Bangkok is the spot to head to for affordable bucket-list travel . Here, golden temples and palaces line the winding Chao Phraya River, and travelers can take advantage of affordable luxuries such as authentic Thai spas, with prices starting as low as $10 for a two-hour massage, incredible local cuisine for just a few dollars and a ride on a tuk-tuk costing just $1.50 an hour. Bangkok's quality of things to do (rated 4.51 out of 5)—hello, golden-Buddha-filled temples—and health care (a rating of 77 out of 100) helped secure its spot in the top five trips for seniors.

5. Tallinn, Estonia

Best for: Holiday markets and winter charm

There are definitely some surprises in the survey, says Webber, including multiple spots in Eastern Europe that fill the middle of the list, starting with Tallinn. "Eastern European cities are hidden gems for senior citizens," she says. "[They] are perhaps lesser-known vacation destinations, but this study highlights they have plenty to offer for senior citizens."

Tallinn has been experiencing what InsureMyTrip calls "a boom in tourism," with a 33% increase in foreign tourism this year, according to SchengenVisaInfo.com. The quality of things to do (rated 4.61 out of 5) and health care contribute to its high score. This well-preserved medieval city is beautiful to visit anytime, but it's one of our favorite snow-covered towns to visit in winter, when the lights of the Old Town against the snow create plenty of warmth. Any time of year, stroll the historic district and visit the walled fortifications; then stop into a cafe for a coffee or wine.

6. Vilnius, Lithuania

Best for: Attractions

Another Eastern European gem, the Lithuanian city of Vilnius offers great value for your money as soon as you step off the plane. Just taking the train from Vilnius Airport to the city's center is only 89 cents. But it's not just bargain-price travel that make this an appealing destination. The survey found that Vilnius had the best-rated attractions, earning it a rating of 4.66 out of 5 for the quality of things to do there. You'll find a mix of museums, gardens and historic sites, including a Baroque-architecture-filled Old Town. And don't miss the 16th-century Gates of Dawn, which contain an icon from the Virgin Mary.

7. Prague, Czech Republic

Best for: Walking

Prague isn't just one of the top trips for seniors; it's also one of our favorite hidden gems in Europe. The perfectly preserved city has bright red trolleys traversing original cobblestone streets hemmed in by charming stone buildings. Around every corner, you'll find a new treat, like the Charles Bridge, which is lined with majestic stone statues, Michelin-starred restaurants and classic pilsner bars. Another highlight: an entire "castle district" centered around majestic Prague Castle. It ranks high on the survey for its walkability and public transportation, making it an easy city to explore without worrying about needing a ride.

8. Riga, Latvia

Best for: Performing arts

Rounding out the list of under-the-radar gems of Eastern Europe is Latvia's coastal capital city of Riga, which sits right on the Baltic Sea. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features a maze of medieval streets dotted with Gothic and Baroque churches and hidden courtyards. The lively new town is an expanse of wide boulevards filled with elegant Art Nouveau architecture.

There's no shortage of places to go in Europe , but Riga scored high for the quality of things to do. One example: The Latvian National Opera dates back to 1782 and presents hundreds of opera and ballet performances throughout the year. Hungry? You're in luck. Riga is the home of the largest food hall in Europe, Riga Central Market.

9. Berlin, Germany

Best for: Museums

A dynamic and modern metropolis, Berlin draws travelers from all corners of the globe to experience its modern arts, nightlife and historic cultural sites, including Museum Island (five popular museums on a Spree River island) and the Brandenburg Gate. Reminders of the city's complicated past—including the graffitied remnants of the Berlin Wall—are ever-present and absolutely worth visiting. Want to experience a different side of Berlin? Go gallery hopping, eat street food at Markthalle Neun, wander through the diverse Kreuzberg neighborhood or see a burlesque show. And don't worry about aging out of Berlin; the InsureMyTrip survey found that the city has one of the highest average ages (48) in the world; only Tokyo ranked higher, with an average age of 49.

10. Helsinki, Finland

Best for: Public transportation

The capital of Finland is one of the least polluted capital cities in the world. One reason, according to The Telegraph , is that residents routinely use public transportation and bicycles to get around (the city makes it easy by maintaining roughly 2,400 miles worth of cycle lanes). It's also the most honest city in the world, according to a Reader's Digest study—in our test, 11 out of 12 people returned a lost wallet.

On the survey, Helsinki also scored high for health services, so you won't have to worry no matter what the day holds. You can bike to Esplanade Park to relax at a free outdoor concert, tour Suomenlinna (Fortress of Finland) or visit one of the seaside city's many museums, including the Finnish Museum of Photography, the contemporary art museum or the National Museum of Finland.

Best Day Trips for Seniors and Senior Groups in the Bay Area

“Travel,” Marla told me one day when we were sitting down to eat lunch in the annex of Institute on Aging, “is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” “Excuse me?” I asked. She explained that it was a quote by Mark Twain and a darn good one. I asked why she had brought it up, and she explained that she had been thinking a lot about travel lately. She had seen a lot when she was younger but felt her world had been circumscribed by the medical reality of aging. She couldn’t fly, and long road trips were increasingly difficult. She sighed, saying, “I guess I’ll have to find some other way to beat narrow-mindedness.” That’s when we started talking about day trips. Like many people, Marla had gotten used to her home in San Francisco, and familiarity breeds, if not contempt, a certain blindness. You think “travel” and seeing new things involve long journeys, that they are de facto far away. But that’s not always the case. Indeed, there are many wonderful day trips in the Bay Area that involve everything from a short jump on public transportation to a few hours drive. This area is so diverse, so magical, and so historical that a bit of time in the car can bring you to another world. I didn’t think Marla ever had to actually worry about close-mindedness; she’d beat back prejudice and bigotry with her last breath. But these day trips could show her things she’d never seen, practically in her own backyard. We’ve already talked about some of San Francisco’s hidden gems before, but these are expanded to the whole region. So whether traveling with a senior group, with family or a caregiver, or solo, here are the best day trips for seniors in the Bay Area.

Day Trips for Seniors and Senior Groups

The nice thing about the Bay Area is the sheer variety of manmade and natural beauty and, most often, the combination of the two. With such diversity of possibility, there’s something for everyone, regardless of physical abilities. So whether you are in a wheelchair, walking, or up for a brisk hike, there are plenty of options for staying active and seeing new things. (all times are estimated drive times)

Mount Diablo State Park

1hr, 22 minutes from San Francisco Mt. Diablo isn’t terribly tall. It’s less than 4000 feet, but it is surrounded by low hills and valleys sunk within the earth. That is to say: it’s the highest thing around, and the views are breathtaking. On clear days you can see 200 miles, up to Mount Saint Helena or past the Golden Gate Bridge clear into the ocean. The best part is that you don’t have to walk up it. It is perfectly drivable (and bikeable) if need be, and the Observation Deck is open to all. This is a jaw-dropping, world-expanding view that you’ll never forget.

Stinson Beach

54 minutes from San Francisco You don’t have to go to LA or Santa Barbara for gorgeous, uninterrupted beaches along a shimmering ocean. You just have to go north on 101 across the bridge and wind up in Stinson. Wedged between the ocean and Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Stinson is lined with walking trails, wide-open beaches, and a view that is both contemplative and dramatic. But, as you might expect, it is also home to some amazing restaurants and cool, quaint little shops. So if finding funky little treasures in the same spot where you can relax near some rolling waves sounds like a slice, check out Stinson. It’s close to the hum and roar of San Francisco, but so very far away.

(in San Francisco) This one might sound like a cheat, but it really isn’t. So many locals who aren’t Chinese or of Chinese heritage might stop by and poke around once or twice as a tourist, but fail to see the living, thriving community and culture that is there. We encourage you to get off the beaten path, and look at stores and restaurants you may not have seen. Poke down the alleys, which tell their own story, or take in the churches. Rooted in a sometimes rough, oftentimes oppressive history, Chinatown is a true entity unto itself, part of San Francisco, but still a place which is eye-opening, interesting, and a true way to beat back prejudice and bigotry. Twain—and Marla—would approve.

48 minutes from San Francisco Odds are, you have never heard of this little postage stamp just a little north and inland of Stinson. Its official population is 96 people, as of 2010. At the center of Marin County, it is old and historic, has seen booms and busts, and has old churches tucked into Steinbeckian hills, with the dusty aura of somewhat-faded glory wrapped around it. So why go there? Well, one, it is a place you’ve probably never seen, and has that pretty, inner-California vibe that gives you a thrilling almost unexplainable pit in your stomach. But two? It is a hidden foodie gem. There is a restaurant, Rancho Nicasio, which the Chronicle food critic called “the unlikely home of the best and most modern food in Marin County.”

40 minutes from San Francisco I’ll be honest: I don’t think I can describe the experience of entering the towering and cathedral-like beauty of Muir Woods National Monument any better than the National Park Service : “Walk among old growth coast redwoods, cooling their roots in the fresh water of Redwood Creek and lifting their crowns to reach the sun and fog.” The trees are over 250 feet. They average between 500 and 800 years old. The oldest is at least 1200 years old. There are some who think it makes our lives seem small and insignificant, but I don’t. When you are there, you realize you are part of something beautiful and majestic, a world that feeds itself and regrows. And at the very least, you’ll see what being really old actually is.

Mendocino Botanical Gardens

3 hrs 15 minutes from San Francisco Now we’re getting into longer trips. A few hours past our other stops on 101 is the town of Mendocino, which in and of itself is beautiful, but also has one of the true gems of California. The Mendocino Botanical Gardens are some of the best in the country, with a stunning display of flora diversity that offers nearly endless things to see. There are 160 species of bird in the park. There are miles of trails. There is a sculpture garden. There is always something new in bloom. You can go 100 times and never see the same thing, but you should certainly go at least once.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

1 hr 56 minutes from San Francisco We’ll end by going south, past San Jose and Salinas, to where Highway 1 becomes the oceanfront road it’s known as, where the sea and the mountains sandwich a narrow ribbon, and on which you can cruise up and down into California’s past, on America’s wild end. Few towns capture this spirit more than Carmel-by-the-Sea. Historic missions. Truly breathtaking beaches. Unparalleled scenery. Great shops and restaurants. Quirky and talented artists and artisans. Golf—some really good golf. It is a town that truly has it all, and seems forever apart from the big cities to its north and south. It seems a part of the ocean, eternal.

The Thrill of Exploration

Carmel is probably the best example of what Marla and I were talking about. It is as far west as one could go before falling into the sea. It’s where Americans came to get away, to start over, to reinvent themselves. Maybe there was something about getting to land’s end, facing the impenetrable eternity of the oceans, that allowed one to make a change. Maybe it let people look inside themselves because there was nowhere else to go. That’s what happens when you see something new. You discover not just different scenery, but something new within yourself. You have to. You take in new information, and that makes you, even ever so slightly, different. That’s why we encourage seniors and their caregivers to take as many day trips in the bay area as possible, whether with a senior group or not. There is so much to see, and so much to learn. Most of what you learn, though, will be about yourself. The greatest truth about aging is that you can always learn more about yourself. It’s like traveling in the Bay Area: no matter how well you think you know the terrain, there is always uncharted territory. At Institute on Aging, our programs and services help older adults, their families, and caregivers explore aging together, through good times and bad, as an adventure and a journey. Adventures To Go Caters to Santa Clarans of a Certain Age

single senior trips

Lucky you if you are 50 or older. Adventures To Go caters to adventurous Santa Clarans who meet the minimum age requirement. The Santa Clara Parks and Recreation Department’s year-round travel program, headquartered at the Santa Clara Senior Center, 1303 Fremont St., makes going on an adventure care free, whether you’re a lone explorer or want to bring a friend or two along for the fun. The guided, motor coach tours are open to non-residents at no extra charge.

“I’ve been on so many trips. I love them. You go to very nice places and restaurants. They’re just great–wonderful locales, and the bus takes you right there,” said San Jose resident Cathy Sheridan. “I’ve gone on my own and met friends. It’s especially good for women because it’s nice to go in a group rather than by yourself. It’s a good day.”

“The fees are very reasonable. We keep them low and affordable,” said Senior Center Recreation Program Assistant Helen Bobias. “We want to encourage our seniors to get out of the house, make new friends, have new experiences, learn about the destinations and just enjoy life.”

SiliconValleyVoice_Ad2_Jan04'24

If you want to go to the ball game in San Francisco but don’t want the hassle of driving in the city or taking Caltrain, sign up for the SF Giants vs. the 2016 World Series champions–the Chicago Cubs–game at AT&T Park on August 9. The air-conditioned coaches (most with restrooms) hold 25 to 30 passengers.

“It’s a fairly large program,” said Bobias. “We have a lot of day trips, and we’re always open to suggestions.”

A sampling of other unique day trips: KQED Studio Tour, July 14; Jackson Rancheria Casino, July 18; Guide Dogs for the Blind Graduation, July 22; Santa Cruz Follies, September 14; and Beach Blanket Babylon in San Francisco, December 17.

Adventures To Go also offers extended guided tours. If the Ashland Shakespeare Festival is on your bucket list, the Southern Oregon Getaway trip September 25-29 includes a backstage tour and tickets to the comedy “Shakespeare in Love” and the musical “Beauty and the Beast.”

Trips include a professional local guide at destinations and two volunteer escorts on the bus. Santa Clara resident Donna Dull has been one of the bus escorts for two years.

“I got involved by traveling with the group. I was looking for things I could do by myself,” said Dull. “I found out they needed more escorts and applied.”

“I like meeting all the people and socializing. I like the adventure of exploring in the comfort and security of a group. I’ve lived here my whole life and I haven’t seen or done everything. I meet new people–nice people–on the trips,” said Dull.

Let’s Talk Travel! meets the fourth Wednesday of most months at 12:30 p.m. in the mezzanine of the Senior Center. New trips are introduced and questions are answered. Resident registration for the new trips is open at that time. Non-residents can register beginning the following Monday.

“I can’t wait until the new trips are announced at the meetings,” said Sheridan.

“Couples, singles, men, women–you should just come. At least try it once,” said Dull. “I guarantee you’ll come back. And it’s okay to come alone.”

That brings an end to our live updates on the Ukraine war for this evening.

We'll bring you any major updates overnight. In the meantime, you can scroll through the blog below to catch up on the day's developments.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a direct message to the two Russian top generals who are the subject of fresh arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court.

The court has accused Sergei Shoigu and General Valery Gerasimov of war crimes and the crime against humanity of inhumane acts.

In his nightly video address, Mr Zelenskyy said: "Shoigu, Gerasimov – your path to The Hague is open."

The Ukrainian president also said the official start of Ukraine's ascension into the EU today was a "historic result", adding: "We will definitely implement everything necessary to advance through each chapter of our relations with the EU and to create a treaty – a treaty of Ukraine's accession."

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin and Russian defence minister Andrei Belousov spoke over the phone today, in what marked the first call between Mr Austin and his Russian counterpart since March 2023.

The two men discussed the importance of open lines of communication, the Pentagon said.

Spokesperson Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder said Mr Austin had initiated the conversation.

Mr Belousov was appointed to the role of defence minister last month after the shock dismissal of longtime minister Sergei Shoigu by Vladimir Putin.

Some of the returned Ukrainian soldiers were prisoners taken from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the head of the Ukrainian president's office has said.

Andriy Yermak said of the 90 fighters returned by Russia today, 52 were from a large group of Ukrainians captured while trying to defend the Azovstal steelworks in southern Ukraine while others had been held as prisoners after the capture of Chernobyl.

Both sites were seized by Russia early in the war.

Mr Yermak described the latest prisoner swap as an "important exchange".

"Thanks to our team for their work. Grateful to the UAE for facilitating the exchange. We will return everyone," he said.

Russia and Ukraine have each returned 90 prisoners of war in the latest swap between the two countries, the Russian defence ministry has said.

In a statement on Telegram, the ministry said Russian prisoners were returned with the United Arab Emirates acting as an intermediary.

The prisoners were being flown to Moscow for medical checks, it added.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed in a post to social media that 90 Ukrainian soldiers were returned by Russia.

"We remember all our people in Russian captivity. We continue our work for the release of everyone. We seek the truth about everyone who may be held by the enemy," he said, as he thanked the Ukrainian exchange team.

The EU has launched its 14th package of sanctions against Russia - this time targeting Vladimir Putin's liquefied natural gas exports (LNG) for the first time.

The measure is the latest attempt by the bloc to deny Mr Putin's regime of money as his war on Ukraine drags into its 29th month.

The sanctions, which will kick in after a nine-month transition period, fall short of an outright ban on Russian LNG shipments.

This partly reflects the fact that EU members are themselves still allowed to buy LNG from Moscow - even though the bloc has set a target of phasing out Russian fossil fuels by 2027.

The EU followed the lead of the United States and the UK in banning Russian oil imports, with one or two limited exceptions, in 2022 after Russia attacked Ukraine.

What latest sanctions do

The key measure in the package, signed off late last week in the face of opposition from Germany and Hungary, is a ban on trans-shipments off EU ports of Russian LNG - essentially preventing the commodity from being sold to third countries via EU ports.

Part of the package also targets specific vessels - including an initial 27 oil tankers - that are used to get around the price cap slapped on Russian oil by the G7 countries.

It will also, in time, target vessels caught, for example, carrying ammunition from North Korea to Russia or transporting grain stolen from Ukraine by Moscow.

The latest package of sanctions also bans new investments and services to complete LNG projects under construction in Russia.

That should, in theory, stymie Russia's attempts to build out its LNG exports and grow market share.

Other elements include bans on EU businesses from using the Bank of Russia's system for transfer of financial messages (SPFS) system - the Bank of Russia's version of the West's Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) inter-bank messaging system.

Under this measure, the European Council will be allowed to draw up a list of non-Russian third-country banks connected to the system and ban them from doing business with EU operators.

Targeting rich Russians and pop stars

There are also restrictions on access to Russian media, as well as new technological and export restrictions and a fresh blacklist of a further 116 people deemed to be supporting the war, including the singer Yaroslav Dronov, who performs under the name Shaman and whose song 'I'm Russian' was reportedly played daily to Alexei Navalny, the late democracy campaigner, in his Arctic Circle prison cell.

Also targeted was another popular Russian singer, Polina Gagarina, who performed before Putin at an event in Crimea following the invasion of Ukraine.

The EU has also introduced a number of bans, targeting wealthy Russians, on private jet travel to EU resorts.

Announcing the measures, the European Commission said: "As the Russian aggression against Ukraine continues, the EU remains determined to keep acting to further reduce Russia's sources of revenue and capacity to wage war.

"Today's measures send a clear and strong signal of EU unity and of our support to Ukraine and its people."

Will watered-down sanctions have any impact?

The big question is whether these latest sanctions will actually have much impact - particularly in view of the fact that they were watered down.

Germany, for example, reportedly prevented a widening of measures that would have forced EU companies to guarantee that their customers would not be able to sell prohibited goods to Russia.

And Hungary - the value of whose Russian LNG imports is up 59% year on year - is said to have demanded assurances that no current or future measures will impact the Paks II nuclear power plant which is being built by the state-owned Russian power company Rosatom 63 miles to the south-west of Budapest.

The chances are that the sanctions will only go so far in hurting Russia.

Still a major supplier

According to Kpler, the data provider, Russia is the second-biggest supplier of LNG to the EU after the United States. It says that, so far this year, the US has met 41% of the EU's LNG needs and Russia 21%.

And in May this year, for the first time since just after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, imports of Russian LNG were greater than those of American LNG.

Nor do these sanctions cover imports of Russian gas transported to the EU through pipelines via Turkey and Ukraine itself.

Much of this ends up in central European countries such as Austria, which in the first five months of this year had 80% of its gas needs met by Russia, but also countries such as Italy and Belgium.

Moreover, while the bans on trans-shipments will make it harder for Russian LNG exports to reach their intended destination, they are unlikely to stop them altogether.

They will just force Russia to use longer shipping routes - while a lot of the LNG previously being exported in this way is now, ironically, likely to be sold to customers in Europe itself.

It is always encouraging to see the EU seeking to deprive Putin's war machine of money.

But these sanctions could have gone a lot further. That they did not highlights the extent to which the EU still relies on Russian gas.

Donald Trump has been presented with a plan to end the war in Ukraine if he is elected to the White House in November.

The Reuters news agency reports that two key advisers for the presumptive Republican nominee have put forward the plan, which involves telling Kyiv it will only get more US military aid if it enters peace talks.

At the same time, the US would warn Moscow that refusal to negotiate would result in increased support from Washington for Ukraine, according to retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg.

Lt Kellogg and Fred Fleitzl, who were both chiefs of staff in Trump's National Security Council while he was president and who came up with the plan, said a ceasefire would be based on prevailing battle lines during peace talks.

Mr Fleitzl said Trump showed a positive attitude towards the plan.

"I'm not claiming he agreed with it or agreed with every word of it, but we were pleased to get the feedback we did," he said.

The Kremlin has said any peace plan from a future Trump administration would need to reflect the battlefield "reality" - but that Vladimir Putin was open to talks.

"The value of any plan lies in the nuances and in taking into account the real state of affairs on the ground," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

From the Ukrainian side, presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said freezing the war at prevailing front lines would be "strange".

"Ukraine has an absolutely clear understanding and it is spelled out in the peace formula proposed by President Zelenskyy, it is clearly stated there - peace can only be fair and peace can only be based on international law," he said.

Four people have injured in a Russian attack on Kharkiv in northeast Ukraine, an official has said.

Regional governor Oleg Synegubov said Russia hit the village of Bobrivka with "at least four" guided aerial bombs this afternoon.

Two women, aged 87 and 40, and two men aged 67 and 56 were injured, he said.

The women were treated on the spot while the two men were hospitalised for treatment.

Ukrainian police say they have detained a man involved in the alleged torture of a former soldier in Ukraine's fourth-largest city of Dnipro.

The National Police service said on Telegram that Dmytro Yavornytskyi was targeted last Thursday by a group of men in balaclavas and camouflage who injured and put handcuffs on him.

The men have since been identified and one has been detained today, the service said.

Dnipro's regional prosecutor's office has begun criminal proceedings alleging illegal deprivation of liberty and torture.

More now from Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov, who has warned of "tragic and fatal" consequences if the West underestimates Russia's determination.

Mr Ryabkov said Moscow was ready to stand up for itself "and ensure its own interests in any situation".

"I don't even want to assume that this underestimation could become tragic and fatal," he said, adding the West was confronting a major nuclear power.

"There are different ways to respond to this - rhetorical and practical. We have the resources to convey signals to the West in the field of nuclear deterrence, even in the absence of our opponents' willingness to conduct a sober dialogue. But there is a danger, it cannot be underestimated, that their side may make a mistake. We will try not to," Mr Ryabkov said at a conference in Moscow.

China unesco site installs restroom timers for tourists.

China's Yungang Buddhist Grottoes have installed timers on visitor restrooms

The Yungang Buddhist Grottoes in the Shanxi Province of China is gaining attention for reasons other than its carved statues—the visitor restrooms now include timers to highlight how long people spend inside each stall.

The issue of restrooms is a complicated issue for tourists (and residents), particularly when public restrooms have been disappearing for decades. The quantity and quality of restrooms do impact the overall experience of someone's trip out—there are even International Toilet Tourism Awards.

In the U.K., by 2021, the number of public restrooms had reduced by a staggering 50% and in the same year, the U.S. had only eight toilets per 100,000 people, the same number as Botswana— Bloomberg reports that Iceland led the charge that year with 56 toilets per 100,000 residents. The situation came into focus during the pandemic when many bathrooms were taken out of service and many weren't put back into operation—it's often the case that there are never enough for the amount of people waiting.

In the case of the Yungang Buddhist Grottoes, the state-run Xiaoxiang Morning Herald reports that staff told reporters that timers had been put in above the stalls to cope with increasing visitor numbers but was primarily used as a safety measure—it allows people to see how long a stall has been occupied, to see if someone needs help. While no one is given a time limit, tourists reported feeling as if they were being monitored, the images uploaded to X by visitors to the female restrooms have gained traction online.

The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 because of the impressive 51,000 statues carved into 252 caves, dating from the 5th and 6th centuries. The site receives millions of visitors each year—in 2023, 3 million people visited, compared to almost 2 million in 2019, pre-pandemic.

There are lots of startups aiming to improve access issues to restrooms, for both tourists and residents alike. In the U.S., for instance, there is Throne, a company that creates 21st century mobile toilets that can be placed anywhere and crucially, used by anyone—according to Throne, 200 million Americans use a public bathroom every week.

In the U.K., there is Peequal , a company that has created what is effectively a women's urinal, that reduces queue times, is much faster and safer than traditional toilets and is 100% environmentally-conscious. It has ten fewer touch points than normal toilets so it is more hygienic and halves queuing times, so women get through lines much faster—it is now used across U.K. festivals, such as Glastonbury and Reading.

Some local authorities are trying to buck the trend and introduce more public restrooms. In New York, this is in the shape of a restroom accessibility initiative that lists all of the city's 1,000 restrooms on an easily accessible google map. Bloomberg CityLab reports the map was released in early June and has already been viewed 2.5 million times—ideal for visiting tourists, as it lists opening times of restroom facilities in the many parks, plazas, libraries and transit centers across all five boroughs of New York.

In Japan, 'The Tokyo Toilet Project' had architects design new concepts to make restrooms more accessible regardless of age, gender and physical abilities, resulting in a much heralded transparent restroom where the walls turn opaque when the toilet is locked and they light up like lanterns at night—the restroom has now become a tourist feature in its own right, heralding the niche concept of 'toilet tourism' for visitors who like stylish restrooms.

Reuters reports that tourists can now pay just over $30 to take a two-hour 'Tokyo Toilet Shuttle' tour around nine distinct toilets in Tokyo that were part of the project.
