TYBEE ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE NEEDS YOUR HELP!

During a routine assessment this past winter it was determined that Tybee's historic 1773 lighthouse is in need of immediate preservation. The windows around the irreplaceable Fresnel lens, the roof, and masonry all need essential repairs. Right now, the building is stable, but if we don't fix these problems soon, things could become dire. To tackle this issue, ICC Commonwealth will start a 7-month restoration project in November. However, it's going to cost a lot—the current working estimate $1.7 million—for these necessary repairs. We can't handle this financial burden alone, and we're asking for your help. Please consider supporting the private non-profit Tybee Island Historical Society with any amount you can give. Your contribution, no matter how small, will make a big difference in preserving the history of the beloved lighthouse.

Lighthouse accessible by car and a short, easy walk.

I would propose the erection of a cast iron column 25 feet high, surmounted with a lantern similar to the street lanterns of a city, but much larger, and with red lights. The column should be enclosed with a suitable railing, for protection. The cost would be about $2,000. If desired by the board, the mayor of Savannah will make application at once to the legislature of Georgia for the grant of jurisdiction, &c, and the city will give the land necessary for the purpose.

Climb the Steps of the Tybee Island Lighthouse – Savannah, Georgia

On this trip, the show climbs up all 178 steps of the Tybee Island Lighthouse in Savannah, Georgia. This marvel of a lighthouse has a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean that goes on for miles. This lighthouse is a must-see attraction when going through the Savannah area . This historic landmark has been around a long time, guiding mariners around the coastline of Georgia. This model of the lighthouse hasn’t been the same throughout all the years it’s been there. It has been rebuilt and upgraded to accommodate new technology.

Tybee Island Lighthouse

The Complete Package

The Tybee Island Lighthouse is one of the most active light stations in America today. The site still has many of its historic buildings that were used in the 1800’s to support the lighthouse. Some of these buildings date all the way back to 1812. These buildings can give a visitor insight on how the lighthouse keepers and their families lived on a daily basis.

Tybee Island Lighthouse Specs

This great historic sight once was the highest point in colonial America. The lighthouse reaches 154 feet high and can be seen from 18 miles away. It has an automated lighting system with first order fresnel lens that is almost 9 feet tall. The lighthouse uses a small lightbulb that is magnified to over 20,000 candle power. The lower part of the Tybee Island Lighthouse is painted black, along with the lantern. The upper section of the lighthouse is painted white. These colors were chosen because they resist sun exposure the best.

The Many Tybee Island Lighthouses

The first tower was built in 1736, at the direction of James Oglethorpe. The Tybee Island Lighthouse was constructed of wood and wasn’t strong enough, causing it to collapse in 1741 during a storm. In 1742 a replacement lighthouse was constructed. This second lighthouse was built with wood and stone, but still couldn’t hold strong enough because of shoreline erosion. Neither of these first two models was lit with any type of candle or oil lamps. The third Tower was constructed in 1773 and was built with bricks this time. It was first fitted with a system of reflectors and candles, but this was upgraded to oil lamps in 1790. The Lighthouse took some damage while the Confederates used the lighthouse in the Civil war, requiring a reconstruction. When it was finally reconstructed, it was built larger, to about 154 feet from it’s original size of 90 feet. After another hurricane and earthquake, the Tybee Island Lighthouse was reconstructed and updated again using iron and bricks.

National Lighthouse Museum features Cockspur Island Lighthouse as “Lighthouse of the Week”

The National Lighthouse Museum has featured the Cockspur Island Lighthouse as “Lighthouse of the Week.”  In its March 29 newsletter, the National Lighthouse Museum shared the history of the Cockspur Island Lighthouse, as follows:

“The first Tybee Island Lighthouse was built in 1736 to mark the entrance to the Savannah River, but mariners still had to travel seventeen miles upstream to reach the Port of Savannah. Several islands, including Cockspur, Long, and Elba, lie between the river’s mouth and the port, bisecting the river into two main channels: the North Channel, and the South Channel.

Congress appropriated $3,000 on March 3, 1832 for an unlit beacon on the “White Oyster Beds” near the mouth of the Savannah River, and then sixteen years later, provided another $2,000 for ‘placing a lantern, lamps, and reflectors upon the beacon already erected’ and for a small house for the keeper. Noted New York architect John Norris, who designed the U.S. Customs House and Hugh-Mercer house in Savannah, was hired to “repair, alter, and put lanterns and lights on Cockspur Island…and to erect a suitable keeper’s house.” As a result of this work, two lights, known as Oyster Beds Beacon and Cockspur Island Beacon, were established off Cockspur Island in 1849 to mark the entrance to the south channel of the Savannah River. Each of these beacons displayed a light at a focal plane of twenty-five feet using three lamps and fourteen-inch reflectors. Cockspur Island Lighthouse displayed a fixed white light, and Oyster Beds Lighthouse a fixed red light.

The first keeper of these two lights was the appropriately named John Lightburn, who resided on Cockspur Island, near Fort Pulaski, and would make daily trips to the towers to service the lights. James Callan was serving as keeper in 1850, when an inspector noted that the lamps often burned longer than was necessary since it was dangerous to access the towers at high tide. Cornelius Maher, the third keeper of the lights, drowned in 1853 when his boat capsized in the river. Maher’s wife, Mary, replaced her husband as keeper and remained at the lights for three more years.”

From interactive art galleries to candy shops, you'll find plenty of kid-friendly things to do that add some variety into your trip.

To help, we've compiled a list of some of the best things to do with kids in Savannah.

  • Price: $30 for adults; $20 for students ages 13-25 with student ID; $10 for ages 6-10; 5 and under free

The Jepson Center and Telfair Children's Museum offers a wide assortment of things for families to see and do: art displays that kids can touch, manipulate and explore; full suits of armor; Rembrandt and other old master paintings; sculpture galleries and contemporary art displays. The Children's Art Museum is a separate museum, but a ticket purchase gets you admission to the three Telfair museums on the complex. Many kids also enjoy the "non-kids" side of the art museum, so don't hesitate to take them to see the classic works as well as the hands-on displays.

2.  Leopold's Ice Cream

  • Address: 212 E Broughton St, Savannah, GA 31401

Leopold's is nestled into the heart of the Savannah Historic District . Choose from classic flavors like butter pecan, mint chocolate chip and double chocolate, or try something a little more novel: Savannah Socialite, rum bisque and lemon custards are all favorites. Leopold's does have gluten-free and dairy-free options on the menu, as well, so there's truly something for everyone at this classic spot.

4.  Tybee Island

Tybee Island is the perfect local spot for a beach day and it's indisputably one of the top family activities in Savannah. Clean, fresh sand, cool Atlantic breezes, plenty of shells to find and an array of small shops and food trucks make this a welcome respite when you just need to get out of town. Make it even easier with a Day at the Beach experience that picks you up in historic Savannah and delivers you to Tybee Island, along with all the refreshments and beach supplies you need to make unforgettable memories.

5.  Take a Riverboat Cruise

  • Address: 9 E River St, Savannah, GA 31401
  • Price: $40-50

It’s possible to experience Savannah just like many of the city's earliest inhabitants did: by water. Take a 90-minute cruise on the Savannah River aboard a huge classic riverboat. You'll enjoy drinks and live music along the way; food is available for purchase, or you can reserve a ticket that includes a buffet dinner at an extra cost. This is an enchanting way to see the city and it's a family-friendly outing that kids will love just as much as the adults on board. The voyage includes a narrated tour of the sights you'll see as you cruise by; it's an easy way to learn more about the city and see sights from a perspective you just can't get on dry land. On your way, enjoy the shopping, dining and historical sights of Savannah's River Street .

6.  Oatland Island Wildlife Center

  • Address: 711 Sandtown Rd, Savannah, GA 31410
  • Price: $5 for adults, $3 for kids

The Oatland Island Wildlife Center is a lovely, accessible escape from the sights and sounds of Savannah's downtown. Here, you'll enjoy zoo-like exhibits of many local and endangered creatures and learn more about southern Georgia's wildlife, from the birds of prey to wolves and cougars. Though the center isn't huge, it consistently exceeds expectations in terms of the variety of wildlife and the lovely setting; it's a fabulous place to get outside and take kids on an engaging walk through gorgeous exhibits, all without breaking the bank. If you have toddlers in tow, try to visit on a Tuesday, when they have special activities for the youngest kids.

7.  Savannah's Candy Kitchen

  • Address: 318 W Saint Julian Street, Savannah, GA 31401

You'll also find old-school candies, a Great Wall of Candy with offerings sold by the pound and pralines and caramels galore. This is a brilliant stop if you're in the midst of exploring historic Savannah and it's easy to stop by either Franklin Square or Ellis Square afterwards to enjoy the fresh air and your treats.

8.  Webb Military Museum

  • Address: 411 E York St, Savannah, GA 31401

Not all kids will love the Webb Military Museum, but if you have history buffs along for the trip, they'll likely be enthralled by this stop. The Webb Military Museum features a huge variety of memorabilia spanning the decades from the American Civil War to Desert Storm.
