Curators of Detailed Experiences

G ay travel (and LGBTQ+ travel in general) has seen remarkable changes and growth in the past decade. As a gay tour pioneer, this change has led to amazing opportunities in the kinds of lesbian and gay vacations that we are able to provide. For instance, LGBTQ+ and gay travel is now embraced in destinations and hotels where it wasn’t just 10 years ago. All gay group tours and vacations can now offer the same (or perhaps even better) quality and breadth of experiences as our straight counterparts.

Zoom Vacations® offers fun, luxurious, affordable LGBTQ+ and allies tours to the hottest destinations in the world. We understand that successful gay tours must entail personalized, sincere attention at every step of the journey, and getting to know our travelers is one of our favorite aspects of what we do. While we use the phrase gay vacations throughout this site, it may be more accurate to say that we provide gay-friendly travel (specifically gay-friendly tours). We encourage the friends and families of our gay travelers to come along, and we are always happy to assist gay-friendly travelers in any way we can.

As global prejudice continues to fall, gay travel, and certainly travel in general, is evolving in exciting, powerful ways. Zoom Vacations® is poised to meet this evolution, providing the most modern, fun, stylish gay vacations possible.

Our travelers say our trips are “over-the-top”, “magical”, “the best trip I ever had”, and “worth every penny”. We create experiences unique to Zoom Vacations® that you simply won’t find any place else. It’s as if you are traveling with a well-connected best friend who lives in the destination you are visiting, and who is inviting you to the hottest events, taking you on the most incredible excursions, and introducing you to the best restaurants. When you travel with Zoom Vacations®, you leave all prior notions of touring behind, and prepare yourself for something truly magical.

Your vacation awaits…

gay travel agency japan

Kon’nichiwa. Welcome to Osaka. And thank you for joining our gay Japan tour. Things kick off with a Group Meeting at 6PM where you can meet your guide and fellow travelers. After our Welcome Dinner you can make it an early night or grab a drink with the group at a local gay-friendly bar. Please note: an arrival transfer is not included in this itinerary, however detailed instructions for transportation to the hotel will be included in your trip documents.

For our first full day we’ll wake up to a morning tour of essential sights like Osaka Castle and Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, one of the most impressive in the world. Other highlights will include Shinsaibashi, a bustling shopping street, and Umeda Sky Building, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. The impressive structure consists of two 40-story towers that connect at their two uppermost stories, with bridges and an escalator crossing the wide atrium-like space in the center. Our day wouldn’t be complete without a delicious Japanese lunch. The evening is free to enjoy on your own, or join an optional dinner with the group.

Oh my Bambi—this might be the cutest start to any day. We’re off to Nara city, where you can ‘fawn’ over a thousand docile deer that live in its namesake park: the animals politely nod to request a treat, and are at ease with all their admirers. Here you’ll also find Todaiji—one of the Seven Great Temples of Buddhism and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For lunch we’ll slurp savoury ramen noodles upon arrival in Kyoto, then check out a Sake brewery with an included tasting. After checking into our Kyoto hotel the evening is free to enjoy on your own or with an optional group dinner.

Today begins early with a taxi ride to Fushimi Inari, a shrine beloved for the hundreds of distinct red torii arches that line the main trails. Following breakfast back at the hotel, more photo ops await. We’ll visit Arashiyama—the city’s towering bamboo grove—and Kinkakuji (golden pavilion), as well as taking in a rickshaw ride and a traditional tea ceremony. In the afternoon we’ll wander through Gion, where we’ll look out for colourful geishas wandering through the narrow streets lined with traditional wooden merchant houses. Tonight you can make your own plans for dinner or join the larger group. Since we have a lazy morning tomorrow, why not check out Kyoto’s gay scene?

This morning we’ll head out for an hour and a half zen meditation, returning to the hotel around 10AM to give you some rest.   We’ll reconvene around noon when we’ll depart the hotel for Nishiki market where you’re free to grab a bite to eat, explore the shops, or perhaps pay a visit to Aritsugu Knives – the shop that has been creating blades since 1550. After the market we’ll head to our samurai experience where we’ll learn about the warriors, dress up in costume, and even wield the traditional sword.  To round out the day, we’ll head to a cooking class where we’ll prepare our own dinner with some delicious sake.

Today we continue to Hakone on the Shinkansen, aka Japan’s bullet train. Why not enjoy a Bento Box for lunch onboard? Our only plan this afternoon is a walk through the Open Air Museum. With sculptures by Picasso and Henry Moore, it lets you encounter art in a park-like setting. We’ll stay in a traditional ryokan inn tonight, where you can partake in a steamy onsen (a traditional Japanese hot spring/bathing experience). Dinner is included at tonight’s accommodation. Please note: if you have tattoos that can’t be covered with a bandage or swimsuit/t-shirt, there is a chance you will be denied entry to the onsen.

We’re off to Tokyo with a stop at Lake Ashi en route. We’ll even ride on a colourful pirate boat. It gives excellent photo opportunities of Japan’s highest volcano: Mt Fuji. Once we arrive in the world’s biggest super city and check in to our hotel, consider joining us for an optional dinner in the Shinjuku entertainment district.

Today we are going to see some of the most impressive sights in Tokyo, so ensure your batteries are charged and you’re prepared for the madness. The Imperial Palace is where the Emperor resides, and is built on the site of the former Edo Castle. Asakusa is a more traditional neighbourhood, and walking through here gives one a sense of what Tokyo felt like a few years ago. While exploring the city we’ll also make time for a delicious local lunch. Finally, after tonight’s dinner in Shinjuku, we’ll enjoy a gay sake bar tour.

For our final day in Japan we’ll explore some of the quirkier sides of this bustling metropolis, paying a visit to teamLab Planets Tokyo, an audio-visual feast that will engage all your senses on every level. This interactive museum comprises 4 large-scale artwork spaces and 2 gardens created by a world-renowned art collective. We’ll also say Kon’nichiwa  to some mini-pigs at one of Japan’s cutest animal cafes. You are free to enjoy the afternoon on your own, and we’ll regroup for a Farewell Dinner to mark the official end of this historic tour. All we can say is Doumo Arigatou!

As the last day of our tour, no activities are planned and you may depart at your leisure. Please note: a departure transfer is not included, but your group leader will provide clear instructions to get to the airport of choice.

LGBT INFO FOR Japan

Important information, examples of accommodations, photos from this adventure, george & jonathan.

My husband and I went on the Out Adventures – Japan tour for our honeymoon and it was fantastic.  We had never traveled out of the country before, and Robert and his team handled our 1,000 questions with the patience of saints.  Their documentation and organization made the process simple and painless.  Once we arrived, we were blown away.  Japan is a truly a beautiful country.  After we met with our group and our helpful and sweet guide, Joe, we were off on our adventure.   Before we knew it, were eating prawns the size of our forearms in a street market in Osaka, finding our inner peace in a Zen garden in Kyoto, watching the sun rise over the mountains in a traditional Japanese onsen, to bar hoping in Tokyo.  It was a marvelous trip.  The lodgings were fantastic, the food was excellent and we visited so many beautiful sites that our phones ran out of room for photos.   We cannot recommend this trip enough!

Dave D & Steve L

The Japan trip was well-curated. It provided a great overview of the country; we saw so much! The hotels that were selected were outstanding. They all felt very special and were top-of-the-line. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this tour to any first-time visitor to Japan. We felt we experienced all the essential highlights and much more!

I had an absolutely amazing time in Japan! Joe and Frano did an outstanding job filling our days in Japan with amazing activities! I highly recommend this trip to anyone looking to experience the land of the rising sun for the first time!

From the observation deck of the Umeda Sky Building , you’ll get your first impression of the buzzing city. But then it’s time to join in the action – in the high street, it’s shop till you drop! You’ll definitely find some wacky souvenirs for your friends back home. Osaka is known for its delicious street food – your guide will show you where to find the best takoyaki in Japan! As soon as it gets dark, you’ll move on to the nightlife district of Dotonbori . In one of the many cosy izakayas (Japanese pubs), you and the other guys can raise a toast to your gay holiday with hot sake over dinner.

Why Japan ?

On this tour you’re not a tourist – you become Japanese : you’ll travel on public transport , eat and drink at local restaurants , pubs, and street food stalls; you’ll spend a day in a temple meditating with the monks and enjoying traditional bathing culture ; you’ll learn how to make sushi and how navigate your way through the streets of Tokyo with a local ( video ).

Respect – discipline – selflessness : these are the values that govern daily life in Japan. Is this just a stereotype? This incredible journey is worth finding out.

With its more than 1,600 temples , the truly fascinating high culture in Kyoto should be on everyone’s bucket list.

In Japan, sexuality is kept private and not discussed in public ; however, there are encouraging efforts to give homosexuality a platform in the form of vibrant street fairs and an international film festival .

Gay bars are not easy to find at first glance , but your local guide can certainly give you tips when it comes to exploring the gay quarter in Tokyo .

Overnight stay in a temple hostel

Day 3, Mon, 21.10.2024: Call of the mountains

After getting off to an early start, you’ll take the train through the scenic mountains and transfer to the funicular for the last stretch of the journey. You’ll spend the afternoon, exploring Mount Kōya - the sacred mountain . Your guide will take you on a fascinating tour of the vast and mysterious Okunoin cemetery . From there, you’ll discover the holy Garan temple complex with its one-of-a-kind revolving pagoda . In the evening, you’re invited to tap into your inner self during a meditation session with the monks . Tonight, you’ll sleep on a traditional futon and tatami mat as well as learn the ins and outs of Japanese bathing culture in the temple’s communal bath. After a restful night, you’ll be woken for morning prayers by the echoing sound of the gong.

Monk statues with crocheted caps

Day 4, Tue, 22.10.2024: In search of enlightenment

After a traditional vegetarian breakfast  with steaming Japanese tea , you’ll bid the spiritual heart of Japan “farewell” and continue by bus to Nara . At the gigantic Todai Temple  you’ll be in awe of the enormous bronze Buddha inside. If you can fit through the legendary opening the size of Buddha’s nostril, you’ll be rewarded with eternal enlightenment. But even if you don’t fit, you’re sure to feel the energy of this sacred place. In the afternoon, you’ll continue by bus to Kyoto , the former imperial city and cultural metropolis. The first thing on the agenda is a stroll through the traditional geisha neighbourhood of Gion with its wooden merchant houses.

A geisha in Japan

Day 5, Wed, 23.10.2024: Temple hopping

No gay holiday in Japan would be complete without temple hopping in Kyoto! You’ll start with the magnificent Golden Pavilion , which shines majestically from its surrounding gardens. At Ryōan-ji Temple , you’ll feast your eyes on one of Japan’s most stunning rock gardens. Afterwards, you’ll head to Tenryū-ji Temple in Arashiyama. On a walk through the beautifully landscaped garden, you’ll discover streams, hills, and trees in an array of vibrant colours. You’re sure to never to forget the magical atmosphere created by the sunlight shining through the branches of the emerald green trees!

Golden Pavilion temple in Kyoto

During your holiday, you’ll be staying at a variety of hotels such as the sleek Remm Roppongi Hotel and the modern Agora Place . You’ll even spend one unforgettable night at a temple hostel with Japanese monks.

You’ll start off another unforgettable day of your gay holiday with a visit to Nijo Castle , also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The expansive complex covers 275,000 square metres and includes Ninomaru Palace with its amazing “ nightingale floors ”, which make chirping sounds when walked upon. At Nishiki Market , a narrow, five-block-long street lined by over one hundred shops and restaurants , you’ll have the chance to sample all sorts of local delicacies. The afternoon is free for you to explore Kyoto at your leisure .

Day 7, Fri, 25.10.2024: One-way ticket to Tokyo

You’re still not done with Kyoto – after visiting the ornate Heian Shrine and the Imperial Palace , the former palace of the Emperor of Japan , you’ll indulge your taste buds during an interactive Japanese sushi making class at a local restaurant. Reinvigorated, it’s back to Tokyo on the Shinkansen . You’ll arrive at the hotel in Tokyo in the afternoon, and in the evening, accompanied by a local English-speaking gay guide , you’ll explore the open-minded neighbourhood of Shinjuku Ni-chōme , Tokyo’s largest gay district . A truly unique gay experience!

The mega metropolis Tokyo

Day 8, Sat, 26.10.2024: Tokyo adventures

Get ready for the Tour de Tokyo ! There’s so much to do in this amazing city that you can only begin to scratch the surface of what it has to offer. The first adventure of the day is riding the Tokyo subway – is it really as crowded as people say? Your first stop is Asakusa where you’ll visit the stunning Senso-ji temple – an absolute must-see. The street leading to the shrine is the souvenir mile par excellence, with kimonos and fans on sale at every corner. From the giant Tokyo Skytree television tower , you’ll have an unforgettable panoramic view of the mega metropolis. Make sure to take lots of selfies! Afterwards, you’ll visit the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno . Feel free to stay as long as you’d like.

Shibuya Crossing, probably the busiest intersection in the world

Day 9, Sun, 27.10.2024: Iconic Tokyo

Today will be wild! In Harajuku , you’ll visit the famous Meiji Shrine before diving into Japan’s pop culture. Get ready to see teenagers in fabulous manga costumes and one crazy fashion boutique after another on Takeshita-dori . In Shibuya , you won’t find any cats in Cat Street , but you will find lots of unique shops, second-hand stores, and cafés . From the Starbucks on the corner, you’ll have the best of the iconic Shibuya Crossing , probably the busiest intersection in the world – another perfect photo op. The afternoon is free for you to spend at your leisure – with a few tips from your guide, of course. After a fun-filled day of gay adventure, you’ll have a delicious farewell dinner with the guys at a local restaurant in the evening.

Thanks for everything! It's great that you and Guys.travel exist! The trip to Japan was simply a great gift. An incredibly intense way to immerse yourself in a country and a culture. And travelling with a group of gay men was all the more enriching and increased the fun factor by several octaves.

Finn | Sweden

Thank you so much for this wonderful trip! Every day was full of new impressions, whether temple, shrine, museum, market or sky tower, we had a great time together, wonderful laughter, deep conversations, nice bar visits, simply an unforgettable trip with beautiful encounters, it was certainly not my last trip with you.

David | Switzerland

Thanks to the varied and diverse itinerary, we got to see a lot of Japan in just a short time, gaining insight into daily life there and getting to know the country. Another great thing about the tour was that we almost always travelled using public transport, which enabled us to experience the "pulse" of the country and its residents first hand. The tour included a varied and exciting mix of culinary delights, history, urban life, tradition, nature, countryside, and people. The group size was ideal - we quicky became a small "family".

Detours Travel gave me the trip of a lifetime and one of the best weeks of my life in a castle in Italy! I booked this trip for the first time a little less than a year ago based on raving reviews from a friend of mine and Detours lived up to the reviews and then some. Every single detail gets thought through meticulously, leaving me to focus on nothing but relaxing and enjoying the sites. Optional lead tours are available at times, if you choose and each day has the perfect balance of planned activities that you can opt in or out of. I was able to pay for my trip in installments which made financial sense, and any time I had any issue or change needed, a quick email did the trick with no work needed on my end. Travel to and from the destinations are all planned ahead, and trip leaders are knowledgeable, friendly and create an inclusive environment to ensure everyone feels welcome and like friends. The masterminds behind the scenes go out of their way to make sure that this trip is unforgettable, I'm already planning my next one. Thanks Detours!

Just finished up my 9th trip with Detours Travel and it was yet again another incredible trip! My first trip was in Costa Rica in 2015. Since then I have traveled with Detours to Peru, Thailand, South Africa, Croatia, Israel/Jordan, Italy, Scandinavia and New Zealand. If you are looking for a memorable trip with amazing adventures, I highly recommend you book with Detours! I am less than a week from returning from New Zealand and already thinking about my next trip.

My husband & I recently returned from the October 2023 Spain trip. We really loved our Detour Tours travel experience. Our trip was made up of 16 fellow travelers - 4 couples & 8 singles who were all personable and easy going. We had a wonderful Tour Leader, Scott, who was very knowledgeable, experienced, approachable and looked out for all of us.  He went out of his way to be inclusive and was a great source of information on the local sites and activities.  Detours arranged the hotel accommodations, the airport transfers, and the travel between the 4 amazing cities of Barcelona, Granada, Seville, and Madrid. The tour included walking tours and a major attraction at the start of each destination city, but the rest of the time we were free to explore, join a group activity, or just chill in our hotel room or a nearby cafe. Our favorite experiences were the walking tours because the local gay tour guides were so knowledgeable, informative and personable. We learned a lot about the rich local history and culture of the Spanish cities we visited.  Our second favorite experiences were the fun group dinners and pre-and post dinner drinks that Scott organized and which most of us joined in. Although there was no pressure to join in other optional activities, we ended up signing up for a number of them such as cooking class, watching a flamenco show, and seeing the Prado Museum. They were all memorable and fun. Thank you Scott & Detours. If you are looking for a well run LGBT group travel experience, we strongly recommend Detours Travel. Victor and Jim from Palm Springs CA.

As a solo traveller I was a little worried about going on a group trip.  I saw all the other positive reviews and booked. Well there is a reason why the reviews are all 5 stars, I had the most amazing trip to Greece. I felt so relaxed right from the start after meeting all the other guys and our tour guide Oliver. The next 12 days was like having a holiday with all your friends and as a group we got to see and do so many fabulous things together. Oliver was our guide and how lucky were we to have him. He just did everything for us from booking taxis, restaurants, tours and putting information into our group chat so we always new exactly what was happening. He would even put a link in there to find our way back to our hotel after a couple to many drinks which was needed a few times. Detours is 5 star from the moment you make contact with them and continue even after your tour is finished. I just recommend them so much if you are looking to have that trip of a lifetime that you will never forget. I can’t wait for my next adventure with them.

We signed up for our first tour group as we headed to Greece largely bc we didn't speak the language and didn't want to worry about transport, planning, etc. What we got in return was so much more. Our amazing and fearless leader Dan shepherded us - and 10 others - on an amazing journey that included everything from jumping off 20' cliffs into the Agean, seemingly endless shots at Jackie O's with the beautiful staff, a white themed party on a pirates ship, an archeologist led tour of Delos, and so much more. We couldn't have asked for a better group, leader, or experience. If you are waffling on whether a tour is right for you, waffle no more. Side notes: Daily excursions are not required, so if you don't feel like particularly active, no sweat. Dinner is arranged every night, which takes any guesswork out of the equation. HUGE shoutout to Dan and the entire Detours team. They couldn't have made it easier, more fun, or rewarding. We'll remember this trip for the rest of our lives.

I rarely write reviews but I simply had to write one for Detours after returning from their Italy trip. Honestly, the way I found Detours is that I searched for “Gay tour Italy”. And while there were a number of tour groups offering trips to Italy, Detours had a trip that was closest to the dates I wanted to travel. So I booked the trip and hoped for the best! But I didn’t need to worry, and you won’t need to worry either if you book with them. My trip leaders ended up being Miles & Ollie and they were both knowledgeable, professional, helpful, friendly, entertaining, and adorable. They thought of every detail and even included some surprises along the way. I met some great people and made memories that will last a lifetime. I was genuinely sad when it was over. This trip actually meant a lot to me and thanks to Detours, it was everything I had hoped for and more. I can’t imagine booking with anyone else in the future. Now I just need to decide where to go next!

Wonderfully run tours for gay men. I took their 12 day tour of Spain which included Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla and Madrid. I enjoyed their helpful yet flexible format so much I'm planning my next tour with them. Unlike other group tours, you're not stuck on a bus and forced into their schedule. You can go with the group to popular locations or you can spend time on your own, or both! It's really the best of both worlds, having a reliable tour leader to take you to see the sites--as well as having all the free time you want to explore on your own. There's a walking tour of each city, and a list of the most popular sites. You choose what you want to do, and the tour leader creates a schedule so your interests don't conflict. You go to big attractions, like Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, as a group because they've arranged for tickets in advance (without which you can't get in). Our group leader, Dan, was always helpful, organized, kind, cheerful, always calm, and funny. He made sure we got to see what we wanted to see, either as a group or individually. The 14 gay guys on the trip were all good-natured and easy to get along with. As well as having a great format, Detours is also an excellent value as travel gets more expensive. You stay at lovely, centrally located hotels, with a buffet breakfast included to keep you going all day. The group meets for dinner which you can attend or not, as always, it's your choice. Transportation between cities on the tour are also included. It's a low stress, great fun way to discover the world with like-minded people.

It’s hard to find almost any business that “gets you” these days. Travel has changed so much in the past few years so it’s a big investment of time, money and expectation when you book a trip. I’ve just completed my 5th tour with Detours and I can’t say enough great things about them. This is a business built from the ground up with a passion for fun, adventure, comfort and value foremost in mind. All the tour leaders with Detours are reflections of the qualities the owner envisions. They’re all about YOU! They know what they’re doing and have never let me down or fallen short of providing an unforgettable experience. If you haven’t yet, book a tour with them and be ready to be amazed at what they do.

We are so grateful that we found Detours online when looking for travel options. We recently took a tour through Italy and it felt like first class all the way but for a very reasonable price. Everyone from the initial communication with Maurice in the office who handled our bookings and questions to our interactions with our tour leaders Scott and Miles was top notch. They even helped arrange a last minute cooking class for us which was above and beyond. We look forward to a future trip with Detours as it was not only the best service ever but felt like it was with family the whole time.

The 12-day tour of New Zealand was an absolute adventure from start to finish! Exploring Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, and Queenstown provided a diverse and captivating experience that left us in awe of this beautiful country. Highlights included ascending the Sky Tower in Auckland, where the panoramic views took our breath away. The wine tour on Waiheke Island introduced us to some of the finest local wines in a picturesque setting. Hobbiton was a dream come true for any Lord of the Rings fan, with its charming hobbit holes and lush landscapes. The thrill of Zorbing in Rotorua was unlike anything we've ever experienced, adding an exciting twist to our journey. And who could forget the majestic beauty of Milford Sound? Flying back from Milford Sound to Queenstown on a Cessna plane was an unforgettable highlight, offering unparalleled views of the stunning fjords and rugged landscapes below. Throughout the trip, our tour leader, Chase, went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly. From organizing activities to providing insightful suggestions, Chase's expertise and enthusiasm enhanced our experience tremendously. In conclusion, the journey through New Zealand was nothing short of extraordinary. From its vibrant cities to its breathtaking natural wonders, this tour showcased the best that this remarkable country has to offer. We returned home with memories that will last a lifetime and a deep appreciation for the beauty of New Zealand. Highly recommended for any adventure seeker!

Vacaya is the first  large-scale adults-only vacation company on earth built for the entire lgbtqiapk community and their straight ally friends.

VACAYA – Gay & LGBT+ Cruises & Resort Vacations Reimagined

VACAYA completely reinvents the all-gay cruise and all-inclusive gay resort concepts by opening up the experience to lesbians, bisexuals, trans persons, queer men/women, those questioning their sexuality, intersex, asexual, pansexual, and polyamorous individuals, as well as gay men who’ve enjoyed the typical gay cruise experience. VACAYA is the only large-scale adults-only vacation company on earth built for the entire LGBTQIAPK community and their straight ally friends. VACAYA offers fun easy vacations with customized itineraries, personalized service, tailored entertainment, welcoming activities, friendly parties, and transformative moments. Shared experiences with like-minded LGBT+ adults and friends give us a new perspective on the world and remind us how lucky we are to be alive. VACAYA charters the entire ship or resort so we have the freedom to express our individuality, make personal connections, celebrate life, rev up, or simply relax… together. Our mission is to fulfill the vacation dreams of all adults who believe “love is love” while giving back to the community and immersing our guests in the cultures and places we visit around the world.

All-Inclusive Resorts – Staying at a VACAYA Oasis all-inclusive resort delivers a truly relaxing and exhilarating vacation because nearly everything is included for one incredible price. Our resorts offer scores of daytime activities, exclusive nightly entertainment, gourmet restaurants, exquisite turquoise waters, and sun-soaked beaches. But that’s only the beginning. These are places where we come together and feel part of a bigger family. With so much included, all that’s left to do is have fun and enjoy the value! Occasionally, we’ll offer something altogether different with VACAYA Oasis and we’ll be sure to list all that’s included/not included on the trip’s VALUE page.

LGBT+ Cruises – Life on the open water is about savoring the good times, finding beauty in the details, appreciating friends, and discovering new ones. Sailing the seven seas is about leaving the ordinary behind. It’s the moments we spend connecting, laughing, and living life to the fullest. Its possibilities are endless and exciting. Sensual. Life changing. These experiences connect us to each other. They open our minds and unify our rhythm.

This is the spirit of VACAYA. open sea. open mind.

Japan to launch online travel authorization system for visitors

Japan is considering a system to let foreign visitors who are exempted from obtaining short-stay visa declare online their information such as purpose of stay before entering the country.

On Friday, the government announced a plan to implement an online system for travel authorization of visa-exempt visitors.

The new system will have foreign visitors who are exempted from obtaining short-stay visas declare online their information such as the purpose of their stay before entering Japan.

The system's introduction aims to prevent illegal stays. The Immigration Services Agency will decide on details of the scheme by referring to the U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or ESTA, which the United States operates partly in an effort to prevent terrorism.

The Japanese government initially compiled the comprehensive package in 2018 and has revised it annually since then.

The latest revision involved the addition of 218 measures, including supporting foreigners' Japanese language ability development. This is with an eye on the planned launch of a new on-the-job skill development program in the country that will replace the current foreign technical intern scheme.
