Seasoned cruisers know everything there is to know about ships, shores, stewards and seating plans, but to the cruising newbie, it can take a while to find your terminology sea legs – not to mention the Lido deck. Here’s a ready reckoner to help you embark on your dream holiday with as little confusion as possible.

The back portion of the ship.

All-inclusive

A cruise fare that does not charge extra for specialty restaurants, tipping or drinks.

Alternative restaurant

Some cruise fares cover the regular dining rooms and buffets, but you must pay extra for alternative or specialty restaurants.

The central passenger area, similar to the lobby of a hotel. There is usually a reception desk and shore excursion desk. And it’s usually pretty spectacular.

Your bed. (It also means a ship’s allotted place at a wharf or dock.)

The very front of the ship.

This is the room or platform that acts as the control centre of the ship. It is usually staffed by an officer of the watch or an able seaman while the ship is under way.

Your room on board the ship.

Captain’s table

A special dinner with the ship’s captain and other guests, offered by some cruise ships.

Some organisations take over or charter a cruise ship to run themed cruises or conferences.

A cruise itinerary that crosses the Atlantic or Pacific oceans.

Cruise contract

This contains all the fine print about what’s expected from passengers, and what to expect if cancellations or delays occur. It’s important to read the terms and conditions.

Cruise director

This person is responsible for fun! They organise all the entertainment on board, send out daily newsletters about all the activities, and might even appear on the cruise ship TV channel. You’ll also see them acting as the MC at shows, and they may even grab the mic for a song or two.

Enrichment programs

These workshops won’t make you rich, but you may gain some skills in cooking, photography, art and more.

The area near the front of the ship.

French balcony

A set of glass doors leading on to a ledge with a railing, much smaller than a full balcony.

The smokestack on some cruise ships.

The ship’s kitchen, which produces an extraordinary amount of food. A galley tour is great fun.

The ramp or staircase where you board and disembark the ship while docked.

OK, so we all know what handwash is, but it’s worth noting you’ll find hand sanitisers all over the boat and you are advised to use them regularly, especially before entering dining venues.

Inside cabin

A cabin in the middle of the ship, with no view of the sea.

A complete, day-by-day listing of ports of call and sea days.

The open pool deck, usually on the top deck.

Limited view

A cabin with an obstacle, such as a lifeboat, between you and the water.

The middle of the ship.

Muster station

This is the meeting point during an emergency or evacuation. There will be a safety briefing when you board.

Onboard credit

A credit added to your onboard bill – it’s like free spending money.

Open seating

It used to be that cruise ship passengers had designated seating and meal times. Nowadays many ships have moved to open seating, so you can dine whenever and wherever you like.

A small, round window, usually on lower decks.

Port of call

A destination where the cruise ship stops and passengers can go ashore.

It was once believed that POSH stood for Port Out, Starboard Home, which indicated the best cabin positions for ships between England and India. While it has been widely disputed, I’m with Grandpa Potts (from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ) – it’s the posh, posh travelling life for me!

This deck often contains a path so people can walk or jog around the ship. Sometimes it’s a place for shops and restaurants.

The purser can answer questions and handle complaints, as well as handling all the money transactions. Find them in the main lobby at the information desk.

Repositioning cruise

This is a one-way voyage that moves a cruise ship from one home port to another. For example, several ships will leave Australian waters in April and May to reposition to Asia and the northern hemisphere.

This is the side-to-side movement of the ship in rougher seas. Cruise ships these days have advanced stabilising technology to combat this.

A day when the cruise ship stays at sea, and does not visit a port of call. Don’t worry – there’s plenty of onboard entertainment.

Single supplement

Some cruise lines will charge extra if you are travelling solo. This is because cruise fares are usually based on double occupancy.

Stabilisers

These retractable devices extend from the side of a ship to reduce roll.

A posher way of saying cabin.

The very back of the ship.

The housekeeper who maintains cabins. They’re a good starting point for questions and special requests.

A cabin with separate sleeping and living areas.

Descending just a tad, the highest full deck on many cruise vessels is typically named the sports deck or sun deck.

As the name suggests, it’s a space often dedicated to recreational activities and sunbathing. But, as with many things in the world of cruising, there’s no strict standard.

Depending on the cruise line or even the specific ship within a fleet, this deck might bear a different name or serve a slightly different purpose.

How Many Decks Does The Average Cruise Ship Have?

Cruise ships come in a lot of sizes, each with its own architectural blueprint. On average, you’ll find that a standard cruise ship boasts somewhere between 10 and 15 decks.

However, there are behemoths in the cruising world that break this mold.

Take, for instance, Royal Caribbean’s “Wonder of the Seas,” a titanic presence on the waters, towering with an impressive 22 decks.

The design and number of decks aren’t arbitrary. They are closely tied to the ship’s intent and the waters it sails.

A river cruise, with its narrower confines and calmer waters, will typically have fewer decks in comparison to its ocean-going counterparts. This is both a matter of practicality and the distinct experience each type of cruise aims to offer.

Cruise Ship Operators Deck Naming Conventions

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line is known for its fun and lively atmosphere, which extends to their deck naming conventions.

On their ships, you’ll find Promenade Deck for strolling and taking in the sights, Lido Deck for pools and outdoor activities, and Spa Deck for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Additionally, Carnival features themed decks such as Riviera and Atlantic Deck , which are often inspired by famous cities or regions around the world.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean’s fleet has a sense of grandeur and elegance in their deck names. On their ships, you’ll find notable decks like Sun Deck , a perfect spot for sunbathing and enjoying the view, and Pool Deck , where you can splash around in the swimming pools or relax in the hot tubs.

Royal Caribbean also includes unique deck names like Central Park Deck , which offers a lush, green space with outdoor dining and activities, and Boardwalk Deck , where you can enjoy arcade games and entertainment venues.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line is known for its Freestyle Cruising concept, which translates into flexible and innovative deck names.

On their ships, you’ll discover decks such as Waterfront Deck , where you can stroll along the oceanfront promenade, and Observation Deck , which offers panoramic views and a tranquil setting.

Norwegian also features deck names like The Haven , an exclusive area for guests staying in luxurious suites, and Spice H2O , an adults-only retreat with a bar, pool, and lounge area.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises have a modern luxury vibe, and their deck naming conventions reflect that sophisticated ambiance.

On their ships, you’ll notice decks like Sunset Deck , a prime spot for watching the sun go down, and Resort Deck , which includes pools, lounges, and open-air dining.

Additionally, they feature the unique Magic Carpet Deck on some of their ships, which is a multi-functional platform that can move up and down the side of the ship, transforming into a restaurant, lounge, or disembarkation platform.

Rooms on the Lido deck- Good or Bad???

We are thinking of going on the "New" Sunshine in December and someone suggested a room on the Lido deck. I know it is close to everything but is it loud? I know not to be under the Lido or Casino just not sure of being on the deck. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Lido balcony rooms are my all time favorite. I've never had any problems with noise, etc.

I had the same concerns also but I got a balcony on the Lido last September on the Liberty and it was great. Absolutely no noise and of course close to everything. I am doing the same this November on the Conquest. I will now always try to get a balcony on the Lido. :D

Lido deck is not close to everything. It is very far away from dining rooms, entertainment, and getting off/on the ship. It is close to the sunning area, pools, & buffet, but that's not everything that a ship has to offer. There's plenty more that's far below lido deck. I certainly understand people preferring to be close to the buffet & pool areas, but that's not everything.

Now that I got that out of me, I wouldn't worry about having a lido deck room. The noise doesn't seem to ever be a problem for those rooms. Somehow, the noise gets blocked, even for the rooms that are closer to the doors. But my personal preference is deck 7, because it is centrally located between (literally) everything. Deck 2 is nice for easy off/on the ship, and very convenient to dining rooms & entertainment. But for deck 2, do not get a room below the galley.

Try your best to get a cabin that is both above & below other cabins.

Would love to try a cabin on the Lido, but I don't like being up that high. I like rooms midship, mid-deck, which is easier to get around due to the central location. I also only choose rooms with passenger decks above and below me.

I have stayed on the Lido Deck & the Panorama Deck and loved them both! Never had any noise issues whatsoever, and its very close to the areas of the ship we frequent the most! (pools, sun deck, buffet, etc)

We too love the Lido Deck. We've never heard noise from outside as there are Star Trek "swooshing" doors between the interior and exterior.

And since we spend all of our time on deck sunning, it's perfect for us. It's a quick walk back to the cabin for forgotten items or the rest room, it's easy to get something to eat and bring it back to our balcony, etc.

Love Lido Deck Rooms! So close to pools, buffet. Nice to go your room to use the restroom or grab anything you need.

Love the Lido Deck, Had one on the Freedom last year and booked one on the Dream for next February. Never had an issue with noise.

I have one in April on the Breeze. Can't wait!!!

I suppose one needs to look at your likes and dislikes. Personally we love the low mid-ship Riviera Deck. Our favorite thing is ports and getting off the ship asap to explore. We also love the darkness and quiet of an inside on that deck. What we dislike is the Lido area and avoid it, over crowded, loud, sloppy pool shenanigans, so Lido deck is not what we would do.

Your best chances for noise will be the very forward cabins on Lido,as there exposed to the winds and rain . The best cabins on lido will be the ones further back close to the exit door, in other words as mid ship as you can get on Lido. If theres a storm or heavy rain your going to hear all kinds of noise in those forward cabins and the ride will be rougher.

We always book Lido balcony cabins closest to the pool area as we can get and never had an issue.We sail usually on Conquest class ships and we have our own hallway with a door that keeps it pretty quiet.If you look right or left once your at the big glass doors leading to the lido you will see another door ,if you open that this is where we stay.Perfect spot

Thanks everyone for the info. After looking at everything we decided to go with our favorite and it was the Aft Vista premium, we love the wrap around deck on deck 7. When we were first looking they weren't available and then we found one so we are very excited. We may seriously look at the Lido deck on our next cruise though after all of the great reviews here. Thanks so much.

We had one of those on the Dream. Best spot on the ship, close to everything and you don't waste time WALKING though hallway after hallway to get to your room. Booked another on the Valor.

We always book the room closest to the Lido deck when we sail (ex. 9293) on Valor. Surprisingly, you don't hear any of the noise coming from the Lido area. And also, because we generally are on the ship extremely early, we take our carry-ons to the cabin and stow them away in the closet. The door that leads to our cabin is not locked like when you get off the elevators and try to get to your cabin. We call it, our "end unit" :D

We have been in 9293 3 times lol

Cruise Ship Deck Names and What They Mean

Have you ever wondered about the names of the decks on a cruise ship?

Do you notice that some decks have more than one name?

Here’s a quick guide to help you understand what all those deck names mean and where you can expect to find them on the ship.  Where relevant, we have also included some pros and cons if you are thinking about whether you should book a cabin on a particular deck or not.

While cruise lines have various names for their decks, a few are more commonly used or referred to by both cruise lines and passengers.

We go over the meanings of each of them below.

What are the Decks on a Cruise Ship

There are various types of decks on a cruise ship, each with its specific purpose.

The most common type of decks are listed below:

• Promenade deck
• Sports deck
• Bridge deck
• Weather deck
• Landing deck

As well as the above, there might be some other deck names you have heard of that aren’t on the deck plans. For example, “poop deck” we also cover the meanings and origins of them as well.

Cruise Ship Deck Names and Their Meanings

Lido deck / pool deck.

The lido deck on a cruise ship is where you’ll find the outdoor pool, hot tubs, restaurants, bars, and other leisure facilities. This deck is usually located near the top of the ship.

Some people simply refer to the Lido deck as the pool deck and it’s one of the most popular on the cruise ship.

You can relax and sunny yourself by the pools with a cocktail or bite to eat from one of the lido deck restaurants.

Along with the pools, you’ll also find accompanying showers and restrooms on the lido deck.

The word “lido” means a public open-air swimming pool and a cruise ship that exactly what It represents, pools in the open air.

• Promenade Deck

The promenade deck is a mid-deck that acts as a public walkway in the open air that encircles the perimeter of the ship from bow to stern.  Although there isn’t always complete public access all the way around on some of today’s cruise ships.

The promenade is a deck in the middle of the deck plan.  This is where you’ll find people taking a stroll, enjoying the ocean breeze, or perhaps even doing a spot of people watching.

Some cruise ships organize specific group walks along the promenade, and it’s a great way to meet new people and chat at a leisurely pace.

Some of the mega-cruise ships don’t have a complete outdoor promenade deck.  Instead, they have it running through an interior part of the ship where you’ll find (and be tempted) several shops selling jewelry, souvenirs, and other items.

The promenade deck can be easy to spot because it is where you will typically find the cruise ship’s lifeboats suspended on either side of the deck.

As well as walkers, the promenade deck is also popular with runners who get their exercise by running laps around the ship.  On some ships, there are even markers to indicate distances.

The promenade deck is not just for the active. On some larger cruise ships, you might find sun loungers and deck chairs for those who want to relax and soak up the sun.

The word promenade typically refers to a public walkway on a seafront.

• Sports Deck

The sports deck is where you’ll find all the sporting facilities on a cruise ship and is usually one of the highest decks so passengers can use the outdoor facilities and enjoy the surrounding views.

This could include a wide range of sports and  related anything sporty, including:

• Basketball court
• Tennis Courts
• Golf driving range
• Table tennis
• Climbing frames
• Rock climbing wall
• Surfing machines
• Running track

And much more depending on which cruise ship you sail on.

Sometimes they include the entrances of waterslides from which you exit on lower decks.

The sports deck is the place to be if you’re looking for a workout or to burn off some energy.

The sun deck is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunshine.  It’s usually located on the upper decks of the cruise ship, offering panoramic views of the sea.

The sun deck is a great place to catch some rays and relax with a good book or magazine.

Some sun decks have pools, hot tubs, and other leisure facilities, while others are more low-key with just deck chairs and loungers.

The sun deck is the ideal spot to watch the sunrise or sunset with a cocktail in hand.

The name “sun deck” comes from the fact that it’s the best place on the ship to purposely enjoy the sun.

The main deck is considered the primary deck on a cruise ship. However, it varies depending on the cruise line. It’s typically one of the lowest decks, which runs the full length of the cruise ship from bow to stern.

The main deck is often used mostly for cabins, but this is not always the case.

Some cruise lines use the main deck for the atrium and more for public spaces such the restaurants, bars, and theaters, or the lobby area and reception area for customer queries.

Bridge Deck

The bridge deck is the name given to the indoor area that houses the ship’s navigation equipment and controls overseen by the ship’s captain and officers.

The bridge is usually located at the front of the ship (or bow) , offering panoramic views.

The term bridge originates from old shipping days when raised platforms appeared as a bridge, allowing the cruise ship’s captain a wider view while overseeing the ship’s navigation and instructing the crew accordingly.

The bridge deck is usually off-limits to passengers, although some cruise lines offer special tours that allow you to take a peek inside.

Weather Deck

A weather deck on any ship typically refers to any outdoor deck that is not permanently enclosed.

The weather decks are the perfect spot to enjoy the fresh sea air and stunning views. They are also the ideal place to do some sunbathing or star-gazing.

On larger cruise ships, the weather decks are often used for sporting activities, such as basketball or tennis.

The term weather deck comes from the fact that they are exposed to the elements, so you will need to dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

The upper deck on a ship refers to the topmost deck that runs from the ship’s hull from fore to aft.

Some people refer more generally to upper decks as a way of talking about the higher level decks of the cruise ship in relation to the lower.

The upper decks of a cruise ship offer panoramic views and are often home to the vessel’s outdoor leisure facilities, such as the pool, hot tubs, and sun deck.

The term upper deck originates from the days of sailing ships when the higher decks were reserved for the officers and VIPs, while the lower decks were for the crew and lower class passengers.

Nowadays, the term is used more to describe the location of certain features on a cruise ship, rather than the social class of the people who use them.

The crew decks are the levels of the ship where the crew live, work and socialize.

You won’t find any passenger cabins on these decks because they are usually off-limits to passengers.

There will be cabins and social areas for the crew, work areas, storage, and other behind-the-scenes operations.

Landing Deck

The landing deck on a cruise ship is the deck from which you embark and disembark from the ship.  It’s usually the lowermost deck and where the gangway or ramp is located.

The advantage of staying on the landing deck is that your cabin will be nearby, you can settle in quickly, and it’s good for quick and easy access if you stop off at lots of ports. 

However, you will likely be further away from many other main amenities.

The other advantage is as a low deck, and it can be good for avoiding sea sickness.

The term “landing deck” is most likely derived from the fact that this is where you “land” when you first board the ship.

• Verandah Deck

The Verandah deck is used by some cruise lines but not all.  In the cruise line deck name examples below, Carnival and Princess had “Verandah” deck names.

A verandah is an open-air balcony that extends from the stateroom and gives a clear open view to the sea.

A Verandah Deck is usually the best deck to get a Verandah cabin, although there may be other balcony cabins also available on other decks.

Cruise lines often use the Sky deck name for the highest deck on the ship.

Being the highest and often smallest deck on the ship, it has the advantage of offering stunning 360-degree views.

Cruise ships don’t have a poop deck, but it is still one you may hear mentioned and wonder about.

The “ poop deck ” is the raised deck at the stern (back) of the ship.  It’s usually the highest point at the back of the ship, offering panoramic views.

The term poop deck comes from the French word “la poupe” which translates to “stern,” and has nothing to do with poop or pooping of any kind as we may think of it in English.

Holland American Oosterdam built in 2003 has the following deck names:

• Observation Deck
• Navigation Deck
• Rotterdam Deck
• Upper Verandah Deck
• Upper Promenade Deck
• Lower Promenade Deck

Whereas the more recent Holland America Rotterdam built in 2021 has deck names with a classical composer theme for the mid decks

What is a lido deck on a cruise ship?

Think of a cruise vacation, and images of sunny weather and fruity drinks on the lido deck are likely to come to mind. But exactly what is a lido deck, anyway?

The word "lido" in Italian refers to a beach or seashore where people gather to swim. So, fittingly, a cruise ship lido deck is a centrally located outdoor area where passengers will find a pool or two, along with hot tubs and lounge chairs.

Depending on the layout of your vessel, the lido deck could also be the place where passengers exit the onboard water slides after some wet and watery fun.

Lido decks are practical, too. Restrooms and outdoor showers for rinsing off after swimming are common lido deck amenities.

If you're in need of a beach towel, rental kiosks are always found poolside. Swipe your card, or give your room number to the attendant, and you'll have a towel that's yours to use for the day. (Just be sure to return it, or it'll end up being yours to keep — including a fee that will be added to your onboard bill.)

No lido deck is complete without easy access to pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris. The area is sure to feature at least one bar so those fruity drinks will be easy to track down between sunbathing stints.

The pool will also be situated close to the vessel's buffet or have a couple of small window-service eateries nearby so you don't have to give up your spot in the sun or change out of your bathing suit in order to grab a bite. A grilling station for burgers and hot dogs and soft-serve ice cream or frozen yogurt machines are lido deck hot spots.

Having snacks nearby is also convenient if you're enjoying a film, concert or sporting event on your ship's outdoor movie screen, which will almost always overlook the lido deck area.

On a small, luxury ship, the lido deck might be a quiet place to go for a dip or take a nap in the sun. But on a big-ship cruise, lido deck shenanigans often include belly-flop contests, hairy chest competitions and group dance parties, plus sailaway festivities that invite all passengers to join in the fun. Expect loud, enthusiastic crowds and both live and DJ'd music.

But beware: Among all the great things you'll find on your vessel's lido deck, there will almost certainly be chair hogs , as well. These inconsiderate fellow passengers rise at the crack of dawn to claim prime poolside deck chairs. They'll drop their personal items — books, beach bags and flip-flops — to reserve loungers and then leave for hours. They don't want to use the chairs until later, but they don't want you to use them, either.

I always book rooms near staircases on cruises. If you pick the right part of the ship, your vacation will be way better.

• Booking a cabin near the stairs provides many added benefits that make my cruise even better. 
• I avoid long elevator lines and can easily move from my cabin to the main deck and back.
• When booking a room near stairs, give yourself a two-floor buffer if you're right below a buffet.

Although I love small cruises , I've recently grown fond of big ships.

And with cruise ships getting bigger to the point where a new world's largest one is crowned almost every year, there are even more rooms to choose from when booking a trip.

It's exciting to see all of the cabin options and upgrades — but when I'm selecting my room on a cruise , I just want to know where the stairs are.

Because I've learned that if my cabin is located near staircases in just the right way, my cruise is way more enjoyable and efficient.

The perks of this placement are so good that I only book cabins near staircases now and will continue to do so for every cruise I take.

Booking a cabin near stairs helps me avoid long elevator lines

My most recent cruise on the Discovery Princess , which has 19 decks, is a great example of how strategic cabin selection can make a trip better.

I stayed on Deck 12, and my cabin was near the aft (rear) of the ship, directly across from an elevator bank and set of stairs.

Related stories

Since the larger bank of panoramic elevators is farther along the deck, the aft elevators were used less frequently, and noise was not a problem.

The best part, though, was being near the staircase. Since there was technically no Deck 13, I could climb two flights and be right at Deck 16, Discovery Princess' Lido deck.

The Lido deck has a mix of cabins and public areas, and the aft stairs brought me right next to the large buffet area.

When the buffet was crowded, and elevators were cramped and surrounded by crowds waiting to get on them, I could just quickly pop up and down the staircase.

I added built-in exercise to my daily routine by taking the stairs, too.

The convenience of a cabin near stairs is unmatched

Like most cruisers, I spend the majority of my day away from my cabin, but I also don't want to carry a ton of things around with me.

By having a cabin near a set of stairs that's close to the decks I spend the most time on, it's easy for me to run to my cabin for a book, headphones, or sunscreen.

Not having to rely on elevators for mundane tasks keeps my days quick and efficient, which means I can get back to enjoying my vacation faster.

Just make sure you check the ship's map before you book

This placement can have drawbacks if you don't make sure your cabin isn't directly under a buffet or popular spot. I learned this the hard way on the Celebrity Silhouette when I selected a cabin near the stairs but one floor directly below the buffet.

My location was great until the sounds of staff moving carts and chairs around woke me up in the early morning hours every day. I now look for a two-deck buffer between my cabin and any deck with a buffet area.

It's also important to check which staircases go to which floors. For example, on Discovery Princess, not all staircases go through from Deck 12 all the way to Deck 5, where many activities and dining options are located.

To find your ideal cabin, review the ship's deck plans before you book. They're available on most cruise-line websites, and you can use them to look up staterooms and their locations in relation to stairs and highly trafficked areas.

Silver Nova Cruise Ship Review: What Silversea's All-Inclusive Luxury Cruising Is Like

Compared to mainstream cruises with their upcharges and theme-park-esque gimmicks, all-inclusive luxury cruises definitely have their charms. The staff knows your name and preferred choice of water (sparkling) as well as your nightly choice of pre-dinner cocktail. There are very few times when you’ll have to charge anything to your room or have to pay for extras because pretty much everything is covered in the (high) price of the cruise, including a selection of excursions in every port. (Note that meals at specialty restaurants do cost extra.)

Plus, there are fewer passengers on a luxury cruise than on the monster megaships, so not only is the service more attentive but also you may have a better chance of getting to know your fellow passengers.

Needless to say, the prices reflect all this indulgence. 

As passengers have come to expect from ultra-luxury cruise line Silversea, the company’s 11th ship, Silver Nova , is an elegant ship with excellent food and wine as well as nearly flawless service. 

Nonetheless, there are notable changes aboard the first of Silversea’s Nova class vessels. Silver Nova , which debuted in August 2023, is billed as one of the most spacious cruise ships ever built due to a design meant to give more elbow room per passenger. The crew-to-guest ratio, meanwhile, is nearly one-to-one, with butler service in every suite underscoring the sense of luxe, attentive comfort. 

I sailed on Silver Nova’s weeklong inaugural voyage (at the invitation of the cruise line) from Vancouver, Canada, to Seward, Alaska, in early May 2024. 

Read on to find out whether the ship’s refined and modern approach to luxury cruising is worth the splurge.

The ship’s innovative design, open spaces, and unobstructed views

The uniquely outward-facing, asymmetrical design of Silver Nova creates abundant wide-open spaces indoors and outside on the expansive decks, including the pool deck (deck 10; pictured above), positioned on the ship’s starboard side (on your right when facing forward). The concept recalls a rooftop deck at an upscale hotel, with great destination views from the pool, pool bar, loungers, and cozy nooks.

The ship’s design situates all the suites on four decks (6–9) at the front of the vessel rather than the back, freeing up room for light-filled public spaces with higher ceilings and allowing for continuity with all the restaurants, bars, boutiques, and other venues, located on decks 3, 4, 5, and 10. (The sun deck and cliff whirlpool are on deck 11). 

Centered on the three-story atrium, which is the hub of the ship, are the Arts Café (deck 4), the Dolce Vita Lounge (deck 5), and the line’s new champagne bar, The Shelter , on deck 3. The two-story Venetian Lounge (decks 4 and 5) can seat 370 guests, and hosts live entertainment, enrichment programming, movies, and other activities.

The ship's layout and generous use of glass—more than 43,000 square feet of it, including floor-to-ceiling windows and glass-enclosed exterior elevators—make the ship feel airy and open, and bring guests closer to the sea and to the destinations the ship visits. All that glass doesn’t hurt when it comes to showing off the views, either. 

Even when I couldn’t be outside on the decks or on my veranda while we cruised along Hubbard Glacier in Alaska, I could see the scenery from the glass-enclosed space at S.A.L.T. Lab (deck 10) during my cooking class and when I was returning to my suite by way of the elevators. 

Spacious suites with verandas and butler service

The interior décor in Silver Nova ’s 364 all-suite staterooms (divided into 13 categories) channels quiet luxury with an understated color scheme of gray, cream, brown, and blue—though there are pops of color throughout, such as in the artwork and pillows.

Even the smallest accommodation, the classic Veranda Suite , is generous in size, with a total of 357 square feet large enough to encompass a queen-size bed and private teak veranda. Each of these suites has a walk-in closet and big marble bathroom; many units have full-size showers and tubs.

My accommodation for the sailing was a 527-square-foot Medallion Suite (pictured above).   This lovely stateroom includes a separate living and sleeping area, a bathroom with a double vanity, a walk-in closet, a full-size shower and tub, and a large veranda.

My butler was exceptional during the cruise, offering the line’s Roman-inspired Otium spa and wellness products (such as aromatherapy bath salts) for relaxing evening baths and showers, complete with music and candles (battery-operated to reduce fire hazards at sea). She also delivered indulgent nightly canapes, coordinated my schedule by confirming dining reservations and excursions, brought room service nearly every morning, and even offered to unpack and pack my luggage.

For further relaxation at sea, the Otium sleep experience includes luxurious custom-made bedding, exclusive Egyptian cotton linens made by Rivolta Carmignani, and a pillow menu.

Silver Nova features several new suite categories made possible by the design of the ship, such as the 1,324-square-foot Otium Suites . The plush accommodations have 270-degree views from a prime corner aft location, a 431-square-foot balcony with a private whirlpool, a spacious living area, a generous walk-in closet, a large bedroom, a walk-in shower, and other included perks such as Otium spa treatments, a complimentary dinner at a specialty venue, and more. 

Reimagined food-and-drink venues and a destination-specific culinary program

Silver Nova has an impressive number of indoor and outdoor dining venues, with three specialty options that come at an additional cost, including French and Japanese restaurants and an ambitious 11-course tasting menu at S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table on deck 10. On a 7-night cruise, you’ll have more restaurants to choose from than evenings to dine, especially if you opt for room service any night. Additionally, there are 10 bars and lounges.

For the classic cruise dining experience, head to Atlantide (deck 3) for signature dishes, an elegant ambience, and top-notch service. An evening at La Dame (deck 4) costs extra, but the price ($160 per person) seems reasonable, considering the French menu covers caviar, foie gras, lobster, Dover sole, a selection of fine cheeses, and wine pairings with every course (showcasing wines not available elsewhere on the ship).

Silver Note (deck 5; pictured above) offered another memorable evening. The swanky setting harks back to old-fashioned supper clubs with live music (a piano player and singer during my voyage). A tapas menu lets you sample perfect smaller dishes such as beautifully sautéed scallop medallions with champagne foam, citrus marinated lobster tail, and beef tenderloin tournedos. 

S.A.L.T. , an acronym for Sea and Land Taste, is the line’s immersive culinary program, created in partnership with the award-winning culinary journalist and magazine editor, Adam Sachs. The idea is to give cruisers a chance to experience the food culture of the destination they're visiting, via menus as well as hands-on activities. 

S.A.L.T. Kitchen , which sits next to Atlantide on deck 3, is the ship’s other main restaurant, but instead of sticking to a set menu, dinner options change throughout the week, inspired by the cruise’s itinerary. The Voyage menu is based on the best culinary inspiration throughout the cruise, while the Terrain menu is more specific to individual ports. 

Entertainment and activities

While the production shows can be hit or miss on a smaller ship like this, there are other appealing entertainment options such as stand-up comedy and live music. Team Trivia in the Panorama Lounge (deck 5) is a standing-room-only hit, and history buffs will enjoy the destination lectures.

I was also impressed with the hands-on, destination-focused cooking classes I took at the S.A.L.T. Lab . Host chef Drake Robertson has a great pedigree (including working with America’s Test Kitchen ), and the classroom space is bright and open with floor-to-ceiling windows. It was one of the largest and most attractive cooking venues I’ve seen on a ship. (The view from the back of the classroom is pictured above.)

The well-appointed spa, located next to the Venetian Lounge on deck 5, has eight treatment rooms, experiential showers, a relaxation pool, a steam room and sauna, a relaxation space, and other amenities inspired by ancient Roman baths. I didn’t have time to book a treatment, but I was certainly intrigued. 

Not much is lacking on Silver Nova . However . . . 

I love the design of The Marquee (pictured above),   the beautiful al fresco dining venue on deck 10 that features views of the ocean. The eatery serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and includes The Grill , where the Hot Rocks BBQ experience takes place in the evenings, and Spaccanapoli , where you’ll find freshly prepared Neapolitan pizza. As I quickly discovered, however, it was too chilly to dine outdoors during May in Alaska. 

Worse, The Marquee is the only place where you can get a late lunch after the other restaurants stop serving and the buffet closes at La Terrazza (deck 4). So if you come back on the ship later in the afternoon after an excursion or day in port and you're hungry for a full meal, eating outside or ordering room service are the only options. (Light snacks are available at the Arts Café until 6pm, but it’s not sit-down fare). 

Depending on the itinerary, having an open-air dining venue that relies on perfect weather to work well seems like an unwise choice.  

Unfortunately, due to the weather, I also missed dining at The Grill. I should have made reservations for the first night when we were leaving Vancouver and it was unseasonably warm. For most of the rest of the cruise, the wind, cool temperatures, and some rain dissuaded many of us from dining outdoors, even with blankets and overhead heaters.

When it’s warm and sunny and the ship is sailing in the Caribbean or Mediterranean, I’m sure this is a very popular spot. But there needs to be an alternative, preferably indoor dining venue for a late lunch when the weather isn’t cooperating. 

Silver Nova  and its crew deliver a well-honed luxury product with excellent—but not obtrusive—service, top-notch food and beverages, entertaining performances, and the extras you’d expect from an all-inclusive ultra-luxury line. The ship is beautiful and unique and offers a refreshing and modern take on luxury cruising that doesn’t feel stuffy at all. (In fact, you can leave your extra-fancy duds at home; the ship eschews formal evenings on 7-night cruises, where the suggested attire is “elegant casual” for the entire week.)

The price may be high, but in this case you do indeed get what you pay for. 

After cruising in Alaska this summer, Silver Nova will set sail for Tokyo. The ship will offer itineraries in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand over the winter, before returning to Alaska for the spring and summer season in 2025 . Go to Silversea.com for more information .

8 reasons cruises may be a better value for a 7-day vacation than land-based hotel stays

Millions of Americans are getting ready to travel this summer , with recent research from the MMGY Travel Intelligence's Portrait of American Travelers study revealing that 76% of Americans plan to take a trip this year. 

With this travel surge, savvy consumers are always striving to reap value from vacation dollars. 

But does a cruise offer more vacation value than a land-based hotel stay?

FOX Business consulted with four different travel professionals to find out how and if consumers can stretch their vacation dollars on a cruise vs. a hotel stay. 

Here's a deep dive into the issue — with eight intriguing reasons why cruises may win out in the end.

1. Cruise amenities are usually plentiful 

Cruise loyalists sail over and over again because of the "unpack once" concept — and the value a cruise can present. 

Not only can you visit several ports during one sailing, there are ample food options , activities and entertainment that your cruise fare covers.

Also, there are often booking incentives with onboard credits, free drink packages , free Wi-Fi and military discounts on some cruise lines. For consumers who are driven by price, it’s worthwhile to research cruise options this summer. 

"When we look at pricing for mid-summer travel season in the Caribbean — a seven-night cruise in July, for example — we're seeing an average starting fare of $1,160 per person, or $165 per night, per person," said Colleen McDaniel, spokesperson with Cruise Critic, who is based in Denver. 

"It's an extremely competitive price compared with similar options on land." 

"And when you take into account the amenities included in that fare — food, entertainment and your room — it's an extremely competitive price compared with similar options on land."

When you're considering apples-to-apples in terms of quality, you'd be hard-pressed to find a comparable hotel option for less, according to McDaniel. 

"At sea, you're experiencing not simply a room and a pool, but you've got an array of bars and restaurants , Broadway-caliber entertainment, waterparks and more," she said. 

2. A cruise's value can be stretched

Experts say travelers can make a cruise an even greater value than a land-based hotel stay.

"One perk of cruising is that it allows many American travelers to, in effect, 'drive' to their cruise destination — whether that's the Caribbean , Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada/New England or Mexico, as homeports can be found along the East and West Coasts, and along with the Gulf Coast. So for many, it means there is an option to drive rather than fly," said McDaniel. 

"One perk of cruising is that it allows many American travelers to, in effect, 'drive' to their cruise destination — whether that's the Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada/New England or Mexico." (Norwegian Cruise Line / Fox News)

Without the need to book a flight or numerous flights in some cases, you can save thousands of dollars if you were flying across the U.S. or to an island in the Carribean. 

Also in the win column for cruises: There’s the reduction of travel hassles.

"One could also argue that avoiding the airport — crowds, delays, cancellations, added fees — has even more value in the form of mental wellness," McDaniel said.

3. There is more choice in lodging picks

Unlike hotels, part of the cruise booking process also includes booking your exact cabin — and the room choices can be extensive.

"So, rather than choose between a handful of room types at a hotel, most of which come at relatively the same price, you're able to select the cabin that best fits both your needs and your budget," said McDaniel. 

4. Cruise lines cater to travelers just as hotels do

Cruise lines cater to varying travelers. 

"Yes, there is definitely a tiered model of cruise pricing across the industry that's very similar to the hotel brands and industry," McDaniel said. 

"There are mainstream lines that are more budget-friendly, and other mainstream lines that are a bit more elevated in experience and price."

5. A cruise's tab is more predictable

When booking a cruise, you’ll generally face fewer separate costs, said Sally French, travel expert at NerdWallet in San Francisco. 

"Cruise fare tends to include meals, entertainment and lodging all in one," she said.

However, she noted, "cruisers may see extra costs — particularly if they book add-ons like shore excursions, have a meal at one of the ship’s fancier restaurants, or take part in cruise offerings that necessitate an additional fees like a spa treatment."

"Cruise fare tends to include meals, entertainment and lodging all in one."

Booking a hotel room, by contrast, typically means you’re still on the hook for filling your day and your belly, French said.

"While it’s not uncommon to find hotels that offer free breakfast and activities, travelers should typically budget for ongoing costs throughout the trip, such as dining out, entertainment and transportation between those spots," she said.

6. Cruises can be all-inclusive

It’s an interesting comparison when booking upscale travel . 

"Luxury cruise lines tend to be more truly all-inclusive," French said. 

In contrast, budget cruise lines tend to charge more for extras.

For example, many affordable cruise lines only serve water, tea and coffee for free, but charge extra for soda, juice and alcohol.  

That said, "it’s rare to find a luxury hotel brand that offers free breakfast, except in unique circumstances such as [consumers'] elite status," said French. 

And, she said that hotels most likely to serve free breakfast tend to be the low-to-mid tier brands associated with major hotel chains.

"Travelers [have] an opportunity to relax and focus on the experience and their time together rather than [the] additional costs they’ll need to consider." 

Kim Guimaraes, vice president of national accounts with Crystal and Abercrombie & Kent, who is based in Miami, told FOX Business that in most cases, travelers who choose to vacation at a traditional five-star hotel can expect to pay additional costs for any on-site activities selected, in addition to food and beverage.

"On upscale cruises, not only are guests receiving white-glove service around the clock, but they are also getting premium dining experiences, top-shelf spirits and wines , award-winning entertainment and innovative guest programming included in their cost," said Guimaraes.

"This provides travelers an opportunity to relax and focus on the experience and their time together rather than what additional costs they’ll need to consider." 

7. Vacation transportation costs can be lower

A cruise takes travelers to multiple destinations, in many cases.

"If you were to price out traveling to those ports, with train or air and hotel separately, it would add up to the same or more than using a cruise as your mode of transportation," said Kelly Connor, travel adviser with AAA Club Alliance in Marlton, New Jersey. 

"Figure in travel time and airport arrival and wait times — and a cruise is valuable in handling the travel for you, plus offering a fabulous sea view."

For instance, a Mediterranean cruise stopping in Capri, Mykonos and Istanbul and ending in Athens, said Connor, is much more affordable than trying to hop around to those places in a week on your own. 

"Plus, you have your choice of a wide variety of onboard experiences and entertainment at night and on cruising days — right there in walkable distance," Connor added.

8. Cruising can be more streamlined

Don’t overlook the value of trip planning, said French with NerdWallet. 

"With a cruise, there’s very little thinking involved once you’re onboard, and generally, you can eat when you want and partake in any of the available activities at your leisure," she said.

With a hotel stay, visitors are generally on their own in terms of planning their days.

Plus, if your land-based vacation involves nights in multiple cities, you’ll have to deal with checking in and out of multiple hotels and handling your luggage accordingly. 

I've traveled on all 5 Disney cruise ships. I have 2 clear favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to book again.

• My family and I have been on nine Disney cruises and all five ships.
• We love the fleet's two smallest ships, Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.
• Although we had a great experience on board Disney Wish , it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

I've been on nine Disney cruises with my husband and two teenage sons. We've sailed on other cruise lines including Carnival, Celebrity, MSC, and Royal Caribbean , but Disney Cruise Line is always our top pick.

Stellar service, subtle theming, top-notch kids' and teen programs, and a dreamy private island in the Bahamas are some of the reasons we keep returning.

So far, we've been on all five Disney Cruise Line ships — Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish. We'll soon have more ships to explore, with Disney Treasure planning to set sail in December and Disney Destiny set to embark on its maiden voyage in 2025 .

Out of the five ships we've been on, two stand out as favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to travel on again.

My favorite ships are Disney Wonder and Disney Magic

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic are my favorite ships in the Disney Cruise Line.

They have nearly identical deck layouts and are the fleet's two smallest ships. Some may see this as a negative, but I prefer the smaller, more intimate size and the ease of getting around the ships.

Disney Wonder also has my favorite Disney Cruise Line restaurant, Tiana's Place. It offers a delicious, Cajun-inspired menu and a fun "The Princess and the Frog" theme. There's even a lively floor show with jazz music.

I love Disney Magic , too, but I thought it was more dated and in need of an update than Disney Wonder.

I also didn't love the Magic's Rapunzel-themed restaurant nearly as much as I love Tiana's Place.

The food at Rapunzel's Royal Table was just so-so, but the entertainment and theming more than made up for it. The in-person appearance of Rapunzel and Flynn, capped by a lantern processional to the tune of "I See the Light," was glorious.

Although Disney Wish was great, it was my least favorite ship to travel on

Although I had a great experience on board Disney Wish, it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

The Wish is unarguably beautiful — everything is sparkling new, and the atrium is decked out with a life-size Cinderella sculpture — but I thought the layout was a little clunky.

I may have felt this way because many of Disney's ships are laid out very similarly, and after nine cruises, we're pros at finding our way around.

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic have nearly identical deck layouts, as do Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Disney Wish, however, is laid out much differently.

Unlike the other Disney cruise ships we've been on, Disney Wish doesn't have a specific area for adults-only lounges.

Instead, the adults-only bars and lounges, which are off-limits to kids after 7 p.m., are scattered throughout the ship. This means the Wish doesn't have that true kid-free haven that the other ships have.

I also found that many parts of the ship, from the dining rooms to the pools, felt crowded

For all that criticism, my family and I enjoyed sailing on Disney Wish . But now that we've crossed it off our list, we won't be in any hurry to jump on board again unless the route is one we can't pass up.
