10 Data Roaming Plans in Singapore—Which is Most Worth It? (2024)

claralim

Going on holiday can seem like an endless hunt for free wifi. After all, how else are you going to contact your Airbnb host or check for directions on Google Maps?

Having data roaming on your phone can save you from having to sneakily stand outside Starbucks or McDonald’s to leech off their wifi.

Many phone plans nowadays give you the option of signing up for a data roaming package so you can access the internet overseas without having to change your SIM card. But how much does roaming cost? Let’s find out.

10 Data Roaming Plans in Singapore—Which is Most Worth It?

  • Data roaming plans from Singapore telcos—Which is best?
  • Starhub DataTravel
  • Singtel ReadyRoam
  • M1 Data Passport
  • Starhub’s GigaRoam
  • Singtel’s GOMO Roaming
  • Circles Life Roam Boost
  • MyRepublic Roam Like Home
  • SIMBA Roaming
  • Zero1 Data Roaming
  • Or…you could get a prepaid SIM card

1. Data roaming plans from Singapore telcos—Which is best?

Most telcos offer 3 to 10 different permutations of data roaming plans, so it’s impossible to compare them apple-to-apple. What I’ve done instead is to look at 3 common Singaporean holidays and quote the relevant data roaming plan.

  • Short getaway to  Thailand
  • Week-long trip to  Japan
  • Multi-country trip in  Europe

* M1 Data Passport is unique: Instead of giving you a separate overseas data quota, you just pay to use your local data bundle overseas.

The result? For a trip to Thailand , the best value plans is SIMBA offering $4 for 1GB. However, bust that 1GB by even just 10MB and you’ll be billed another $4 for a full extra gigabyte of data. After SIMBA, several plans tie for second place: Singtel ReadyRoam, GigaRoam, Zero1, and VIVIFI all offer $5 for 1GB.

For a trip to Japan, go with SIMBA Roaming, GigaRoam, or Starhub DataTravel . These will cost you $4, $5, and $6 respectively for 1GB of data. Do note that the Starhub plan is valid for only 3 days though.

Finally for a European holiday , SIMBA Roaming, Gomo Roaming and GigaRoam are the cheapest options. These give you 1GB of data for $4, $12, and $15 respectively.

However, if you are a data guzzler even when on holiday,  M1 Data Passport  is a better choice as it simply lets you use your local data quota overseas with a one-time payment. Assuming you have one of their SIM-only plans, that’s enough data for you to stream Netflix on the Tokyo Metro.

2. Starhub DataTravel

Of the big 3 telcos’ data roaming plans,  Starhub DataTravel  data roaming options are among the simplest because there are only 2 main destination tiers—either Asia Pacific and Global. There is a third tier for everywhere else not included in these 2 tiers, but the vast majority of tourists will not need it as these are mainly more exotic destinations and regions.

Asia Pacific:  Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar (currently unavailable), New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam

Global:  Asia Pacific + Albania, Argentina, Austria, Bahrain, Belarus, Belgium, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guernsey, Hungary, Iceland, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jersey, Jordan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Palestine, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UAE, UK, Ukraine, Uruguay, USA

Everywhere : Asia Pacific + Global + Anguilla (Caribbean), Antigua and Barbuda (Caribbean), Aruba (Caribbean), Azerbaijan, Barbados (Caribbean), Bermuda (Caribbean), Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, British Virgin Islands (Caribbean), Colombia, Congo (Democratic Republic), Costa Rica, Curacao, Dominica (Caribbean), Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Faroe Islands, Fiji, Gabon, Ghana, Greenland, Grenada (Caribbean), Guam, Guatemala, Guernsey, Guinea Bissau, Guyana, Haiti (Caribbean), Honduras, Jamaica (Caribbean), Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macedonia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mongolia, Montserrat (Caribbean), Mozambique, Nauru, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Puerto Rico, Rwanda, Samoa, Seychelles, South Africa, St Kitts and Nevis (Caribbean), St Lucia (Caribbean), St Vincent (Caribbean), Tajikistan, Tanzania, Timor Leste, Tonga, Turks and Caicos (Caribbean), Uganda, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Zambia, Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Armenia, Bahamas, Benin, Bhutan, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Cayman Islands (Caribbean), Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Cyprus, Dominican Republic, French Guiana, French Polynesia, Gambia, Georgia, Guadeloupe, Guinea, Iraq, Isle of Man, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Maldives, Mali, Martinique, Mauritius, Republic of Moldova, Morocco, New Caledonia, Northern Mariana Island, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Slovakia, Solomon Islands, Suriname, Swaziland, Tunisia, Zimbabwe

Starhub Data Travel’s $6 for 1GB option is competitive if you’re just going to Bali for the weekend or JB for the day. Assuming 1GB is sufficient for your usage, this might actually be cheaper than buying a local SIM card when you land.

My main gripe is that the Global and Everywhere roaming plans are very expensive, so if you’re travelling outside the APAC countries you might want to look for alternatives.

3. Singtel ReadyRoam

Singtel customers should be pretty familiar with  Singtel ReadyRoam , which, like Starhub DataTravel, is a selection of add-ons to your existing plan.

They have a $5 for 1GB option, but it’s only for Malaysia, Indonesia or Thailand. If you’re going to any other nearby destination for the weekend, it’ll set you back at least $18. Take careful note of the countries included in the 18 Asia Pacific destinations: Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar (currently unavailable), New Zealand, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam

81 destinations: Albania, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brunei, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Myanmar (currently unavailable), Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovak Republic (Slovakia), South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkey, UAE, UK, Ukraine, USA, Uzbekistan and Vietnam

Starhub used to be cheaper than Singtel, but the latter have since made their offerings more attractive. For example, if you’re going to Japan, you’ll pay $18 for 4GB with Singtel, whereas Starhub costs $20 for only 3GB.

If you’re travelling to far-flung places and need more than 1 or 2GB of data, Singtel has probably the best global roaming bundle. This used to cost $35 for 3GB, but it’s now revised to a very worthwhile $40 for 6GB.

What’s more it covers practically every country in the world: There are a whopping 81 destinations! If you’re globe-trotting to faraway destinations like Argentina and Iceland, Singtel’s data roaming offers the most value.

4. M1 Data Passport

If you use a lot of data even while on holiday,  M1 Data Passport  is probably the best value of the 3 big telcos since it allows you to use your existing data bundle overseas—so you don’t get restricted by the measly 1GB or 2GB with the other plans. Note that for SIM-only plans, usage is capped at 10GB, which is still very generous. When you do exceed this 10GB, you will be subsequently charged $11.99/GB on top of your data passport plan charges.

$15 Data Passport countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Fiji, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Isle of Man, Laos, Macau, Malaysia (5G), Saudi Arabia (5G), Sri Lanka, Taiwan (5G), Thailand (5G)

$35 Data Passport countries:   Australia (5G), Bahrain, Brazil, Canada (5G), China (5G), Germany (5G), India, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Mauritius (5G), Mongolia, Netherlands (5G), New Zealand, Russia, South Africa, South Korea (5G), Spain, United Arab Emirates (5G), United Kingdom, USA (5G)—includes Hawaii, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands but excludes Alaska and Guam.

For multiple destinations, M1 also has a $35 ASEAN Data Passport , $65 Asia Data Passport , and  $65 Europe Data Passport .

A $5 one-time activation fee applies for every Data Passport, and it’s valid for a month. Note that they are for single country use only; if you are going to multiple destinations, you have to opt for one of the expensive ASEAN / Asia / Europe Data Passports.

M1 also has this thing called  Unlimited Data Roaming  where you pay $15 to $25 per day for unlimited data overseas, but I’m not going to talk about that because it’s too crazy and unlikely to be worth your money unless you guzzle data like nobody’s business.

5. Starhub’s GigaRoam

Starhub’s GigaRoam  clearly has one of the best data roaming plans for all kinds of travel. There are 2 types of plans to choose from: gigaRoam APAC (Asia Pacific), which supports 14 destinations, and gigaRoam ROTW (Rest of the World), which supports 34 destinations.

They cost $5 and $15 respectively for 1GB of data. It’s not a lot, but if you just need a teensy bit of data in case of emergencies, these prices are unbeatable. You can add on more if you run out.

gigaRoam APAC:  Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam

gigaRoam ROTW:  Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and United States of America

6. Singtel’s GOMO Roaming Data Pump

Compared to Starhub’s gigaRoam, Singtel’s rival GOMO Roaming is actually quite competitive.

GOMO’s data-only roaming plans cover up to 50 destinations including Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan and South Korea.

The price you pay depends on whether your destination qualifies for their cheaper Asia Pack (15 countries), or requires you to purchase the Worldwide Pack (50 countries). For example,  $6 gets you 1GB for 5 days in Indonesia and the Philippines, but if you go to Japan or France you’ll need to pay  $12 for 1GB for 7 days .

Comparing GOMO and Giga, GOMO’s roaming pass has the advantage of letting you upsize your package on longer trips.

7. Circles Life Roam Boost

For Circles Life base plan subscribers, activating data roaming overseas is a simple matter of choosing a “ Roam Boost ” in your usual app.

Each boost is 1GB and is valid for 7 days. You can add boosts if you run out of data. The price of each boost is either $8, $16 or $40, depending on which set of countries your destination falls under.

The list of  countries covered is less extensive  compared to what’s offered by other telcos, with no coverage available for common destinations like the US and UK. So in this sense, Circles Life may fall short.

You can also opt for recurring add-ons (called SuperRoam ) that cost $12 to $35 extra per month, but the cost isn’t exactly justified unless you literally travel every single month.

8. MyRepublic Roam Like Home

MyRepublic  has a whopping 7 tiers, so the cost of roaming can vary drastically depending on which country you’re going to. Here they are, listed in order of price.

Prices are not exactly competitive for some of the countries. For example, it’s probably a lot more worthwhile to buy a SIM card when you land in “Emerging Asia” than to pay $15 for a measly 500MB of data.

For places like Japan or China, $55 for 1GB is also exorbitant considering you can get several times the data for the same price on many other plans.

9. SIMBA Roaming (formerly TPG)

SIMBA (formerly TPG) doesn’t have the brand history and reputation that other telcos have, but that’s no reason to dismiss it. SIMBA Roaming offers attractive pay-as-you-go rates, with 4 different plans on offer.

On top of that, if you’re already on SIMBA’s mobile plan, you might already get free roaming data that covers some 60 destinations.

The downside to SIMBA’s plans are the fact that they are billed per 10MB. That is to say, if you used 11MB of data on your travel, you will be billed twice as much for the additional 1MB.

10. Zero1 Data Roaming

Zero1 Data Roam  offers 2 categories of plans. Comparing prices across the board, Zero1 Data might not be the most price competitive. Its redeeming quality however is that it offers roaming in an extensive list of countries and a generous limit of up to 30 days for you to use up your data.

You can also opt for $5 plans that give you 1 GB of data to our closest neighbours—Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Perfect for weekend trips!

11. VIVIFI Go

Since we’re on the topic of smaller, lesser-known telcos, Vivifi also has a bunch of roaming plans, categorised according to destination, much like MyRepublic’s.

If you’re travelling to Malaysia, Thailand, or Indonesia on a short trip, Vivifi offers the same deal as Zero1—$5 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days.

They also have roaming plans for households with plans shared amongst multiple people.

Their prices for Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia are pretty competitive, although Singtel ReadyRoam still offers better value. However, if you’re going further afield, the plans are not worth it at all—forget about using roaming if you need to go to Europe or the Americas as you’ll be slapped with an exorbitant $63 for a measly 1GB.

12. Or… you could get a prepaid SIM card

If it’s not economical for you to add a data roaming plan to your current plan, you may want to consider getting a prepaid travel SIM card instead.

Destination-specific ones are widely available on sites like  Klook ,  Changi Recommends  and even  Qoo10 , and they can be REALLY, REALLY cheap, depending on which country you’re going to.

For example, an 8-day unlimited data SIM card for Thailand costs under $10, where one for Japan costs about $10 to $15, also for unlimited data. (This is a good way to check if your data roaming plan is worth paying for.)

For multi-destination trips, there are also prepaid travel SIM cards which can save you the hassle and cost of getting a separate SIM for each leg. For example, M1 offers data roaming packs to 12 to 17 countries with their M card:

If you really want to break things down, getting a data roaming add-on for your regular postpaid data plan may not really be that worth it.

For example, you might have to pay $15 for 1GB of roaming data with your telco—whereas you can get 2GB for the same price with a prepaid SIM. But I think most Singaporeans don’t mind paying a premium for the convenience of not having to pick up and change SIM cards.

Best eSIM for Asia in 2023 (Affordable Data)

Traveling to Asia and you want some data for your phone when you arrive? Well, an eSIM is the perfect way to solve that problem. I can tell you that from experience.

Whether you need internet access for a week or a month, there’s a suitable Asia eSIM for your next trip. In this detailed guide, we will tell you all about the best eSIM options for Asia!

At A Glance: Our Top 2 Asia eSIMs

  • Best Asia eSIM Airalo Jump To Review
  • Best Unlimited Data eSIM Holafly Jump To Review
  • Asia-Pacific Plans Nomad Jump To Review
  • Long lasting packages Know Roaming Jump To Review

I’ve also included the best regional plans for Asia, in case you’re planning to visit more than one country in the region. Device compatibility, eSIM support, and tips for using eSIMs in Asia are all included in this guide, so keep reading to see the best eSIM options for Asia!

Benefits of Getting an eSIM for Asia

The main benefit of having an Asia eSIM is easy internet access whenever you need it. You don’t have to use data roaming, which is usually very expensive for ridiculously small amounts of data.

You also don’t have to roam around a foreign city looking for an international SIM card for Asia, since you can easily buy and set up an eSIM online. And if you buy an eSIM data plan from a provider that allows data sharing, it’s like you have pocket WiFi. You can connect your other devices and share the internet, which is great.

Top Product Overview

Best esim providers in asia.

Airalo offers eSIM data packages for nearly every corner of the world, and they usually start at $4.5. That’s what makes them the most popular global eSIM card provider among travelers.

This eSIM provider offers affordable data plans for Asian countries, which usually include plans for a week, two weeks, or a month.

You can usually choose from multiple data allowances for the monthly plan, and you can get a month of cellular data access for less than $10 in most countries. Airalo eSIM cards do not provide you with a phone number or SMS options, so keep that in mind.

Airalo also offers a regional data plan for Asia, which covers 13 countries in South East Asia. The data plan starts at

  • 1GB/7 days for $5
  • 3GB / 30 days for $13
  • 5GB / 30 days for $20
  • 10GB / 30 days for $37

up to even as large as 100GB for 6 months for $185 (1.85 per GB) which is great value, but keep in mind that it doesn’t include coverage in Central Asia countries. If you’re spending some time in Bhutan or Kazakhstan, you will need to purchase an individual eSIM for each country.

  • Great rates per GB
  • Lots of packages & flexibility
  • Perfect eSIM for South East Asia
  • Small issues connecting for people

Holafly is the most popular eSIM provider among travelers who need unlimited data. The provider offers unlimited plans that start at $19 in many major Asian countries like Malaysia , Indonesia , Vietnam , Thailand etc

  • 5 days for $19
  • 10 days for $34
  • 15 days for $47
  • 30 days for $64

NOTE: Use EXPERTWORLDTRAVEL for 5% off your first eSIM purchase

There is also a 14-country Asia-wide plan with more limited data, but you can use it in all the following countries: South Korea, Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong and Macao, Myanmar, and Laos. It costs:

  • $44 for 15 days with 6 GB
  • $54 for 30 days and 10 GB

The main issue I have with Holafly eSim cards is that they don’t let you share your internet connection for unlimited plans. Tethering and mobile hotspot aren’t allowed, so you can only use unlimited data on one device. But if you take the Asia plan with limited data, it’s ok.

Holafly is a good option if you genuinely need unlimited data (for work, streaming, etc.), but otherwise, it can be more expensive than Airalo. You can get 20GB of data for about $25 from Airalo, which is a much better deal.

  • Unlimited data for some country plans
  • Phone hotspot possible on Asia Plan
  • 14 countries in Asia
  • 3G only is Laos
  • Calls only through VOIP (whatsapp, facetime etc)

Nomad is another popular global eSIM provider with both budget-friendly and value data plans. Their prices are comparable to those of Airalo, plus they offer excellent coverage and a reliable internet connection. The provider covers more than 100 countries across the world, as well as multi-country data plans for five regions.

Nomad data plans are the most affordable in Europe , Asia , and North America. Packages for South American countries are quite pricey – $20 gets you 10 GB of internet in Thailand , but only 1 GB in Honduras.

One thing that’s great about Nomad is that you can easily buy more data if you need it. Also, when you buy a Nomad eSIM, you have 30 days to activate it; it activates automatically on the 30th day, so there’s no point in buying the eSim months before your trip.

Nomad eSIMs are data-only and do not provide you with a phone number. The provider offers SMS plans for customers, but these are only available in the UK, US, and Canada.

  • Flexibile options
  • Easy to renew
  • Asia Plans have Australia, NZ
  • No reminders when running out of data

SimOptions offers eSim cards for 33 countries across Asia and Southeast Asia, as well as separate regional plans for each region. Their eSIMs can usually be used in more than one country, and this is always indicated on the website.

The thing I like a lot about their online store is that they offer their own (SimOptions) eSIM data plan, as well as data plans from local providers in Asia. So, you can either purchase their eSim, which is the most affordable option out of the bunch, or you can get one from China Unicom, AIS, and Three HK.

Also, you can easily compare the different eSIM options on their website to decide which one is the best for you. SimOptions offer data-only eSims with limited data, valid for up to one month.

The Smart Traveller eSIM is their most affordable option, which gets you 6 GB to be used over 10 days for just $18. The eSIM is valid in 27 different countries, including most of Central and Southeast Asia, as well as the United States and even Australia. However, this eSIM isn’t available for all Asia countries (Thailand is the most notable exception).

  • 33 countries in Asia
  • Provider choice
  • Asia specific plans
  • Some countries not in Asia plan

Know Roaming

Know Roaming offer an Asia/Pacific range of eSIMs  that cover the following countries:

Brunei, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Macau

This is quite a broad range of countries for Asia, as many only cover South-East Asia.

Know Roaming offer:

  • 1GB/7 days – $8  ($8 per GB)
  • 5GB/30 days – $15   ($3 per GB)
  • 20GB/90 days – $90 ($4.5 per GB)

The 5GB is the best deal in my opinion, but if you are going for 3 months the 90 day deal.

These guys also have only a few country packages as well: Turkey, Singapore and Hong Kong. But they might be of interest to you.

  • Great range of countries
  • Good 5GB package
  • Not many packages
  • Few individual countries

Simtex is another popular eSIM provider that operates internationally. They offer many individual country data packages, as well as two multi-destination plans – one for Europe (29 countries included), and a Top 40 package that covers Europe, the USA, Australia, and a few more countries in Southeast Asia. I find the mix a little strange though and not really deal for travel in Asia.

The multi-destination plans have a flat rate of $25 for Europe and $35 for the Top 40. Both plans are active for an entire month; the Europe plan comes with 10 GB of data, while the Top 40 plan includes 7 GB.

The regional plan is great value for money – it’s significantly cheaper than even Airalo, but I have to point out that Airalo offers coverage in 10 more countries. But the Top 40 plan just isn’t good enough if you only need coverage in Asia.

Simtex’s single-destination packages are priced fairly and start at $4-9 for 1 GB of data that’s active for three days. That’s not quite as convenient as Airalo’s budget weekly plans, but if you’re going on a short trip and you don’t need internet access for longer, it can work.

All in all, this is not that great an option compared to the top providers like Airalo and Holafly.

  • Interesting multi-country packages
  • Ideal for Europe
  • High prices for individual countries

Mogo is an eSIM provider that offers coverage in Europe, Asia, North America, and Oceania. If you’re traveling to any one of those regions and you need mobile data for your trip, they’re a provider worth considering.

They offer both single-country plans and regional data packages, so you can get Internet access in as many countries as you need. Mogo’s data plan for the Asia Pacific region starts at just $2.5, which gets you 300 MB of data. Spend $20, and you can get 5 GB of data that is active for two weeks, which is a pretty good deal.

Mogo offers eSIM prepaid data plans in only 12 countries in Asia, so they’re certainly not a good option for people who are going to travel to multiple countries. But if you’re heading to Thailand for a week and you need cheap internet access, they’re certainly worth considering.

The individual country plans from this provider start at just $2.5 for 300 MB and $4 for 1 GB of data. Mogo also offers larger data plans with up to 30 GB of data to be used over 2 months, which comes down to just $1 per day. That’s very good value for money even when compared to Airalo and Holafly.

  • Decent packages for very small plans
  • A 12-country Asia package
  • Not great country coverage for Asia package
  • Prices not the best per GB

UPeSIM offers coverage in 20+ countries in Asia, as well as two multi-destination packages for this region. Their two regional Asia plans are a little confusing

  • One is around 15 Euros for 6GB of data that can be used in 15 Asian countries and China.
  • The other package is 20 Euros for 1 GB, to be used in 14 countries, including Japan and Thailand, which the cheaper package doesn’t.

The regional Asia eSIM data plans are just not worth it – other providers offer better value for money for sure. On the other hand, the individual country plans from this provider are definitely worth considering.

They’re priced at 9.99, 10.99, or 12.99 Euros depending on the country, and they all offer limited data to be used over a period of 10—12 days.

If you don’t have to use the data for work; if it’s just for maps, social media, and music, 6 GB is plenty. UPeSIM might just be the best value for money for travel in Asia, especially for trips that aren’t longer than 10 days.

Devices Compatible with an Asia eSIM

You can use an eSIM in Asia only if your phone supports the technology. If you purchased a flagship phone (iPhone or Android) in the last 3-4 years, then it should have the chip necessary to use embedded sim cards.

Google Pixel 2 was the first smartphone that supported eSIM technology upon release and it came out in 2017. Apple and Samsung included it in their phones in 2018 for the first time, and every iPhone and iPad since then has supported an eSIM, except for those manufactured in mainland China.

It’s not exactly the same with Samsung phones – the flagships all support eSIM technology but the budget and mid-range phones don’t. It’s the same with other Android manufacturers – Motorola, Oppo, Xiaomi, etc.

You can quickly check if your device supports eSIM by calling *#06#. This should bring up a list of your phone’s unique identification numbers – an EID number indicates that your phone supports an eSIM. If there isn’t an EID number in this menu, your smartphone most likely can’t support an eSIM.

Asian Countries That Support eSIM

ESIM is supported in most Asian countries with mainland China as the main exception. Chinese network operators are against this technology, and embedded SIM cards are not available for purchase in the country. In fact, all iPhones produced in China don’t have the chip to support eSIMs and instead come with physical SIM trays – including the latest, eSIM-only iPhone 14.

That’s why I was surprised to see that  international eSIM providers like Holafly and Airalo offer eSIM data plans for China . Holafly even gives you a free VPN with the eSIM, so you can still use apps and access websites that are banned in China – Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.

I can’t tell you how or why this works, but I can tell you that many travelers have reported using these eSIM cards in China successfully.

With that in mind, it’s safe to say that you can use an eSIM to access the internet in every country in Asia – Japan , South Korea , Thailand, Kazakhstan, Indonesia , Myanmar, Philippines , Bhutan, Cambodia , and many others.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSIMs in Asia

There are quite a few local mobile operators in Asia that offer eSIMs, but they’re usually more expensive than international providers. In general, there’s no reason to buy an eSIM from a local provider, unless you need an eSIM that can access one specific network.

Three HK, AIS, and China Unicom are popular providers among the locals. However, their plans are best-suited for Asians traveling overseas, instead of tourists visiting Asia.

You won’t find any local mobile operators offering eSIMs in China. The technology is not supported, and you can only buy a physical SIM card from Chinese network operators.

Data Needed When Traveling to Asia

How much data you need while traveling in Asia depends on a few different things. The first thing to consider is how much data you normally use – some people barely spend 1 GB in a month, while others easily burn through 5 GB.

Of course, your browsing habits aren’t the same at home and in a foreign country, but you should have a general idea of how much data you usually use. Then consider the length of your stay – many eSIM plans are priced based on how long they stay active.

If you’re staying somewhere for less than a week, you should be perfectly fine with a data allowance of 3-5 GB. This is more than enough for map directions, social media, and music/video streaming.

On the other hand, if you normally use a lot of data, Holafly eSIM for the specific country you’re traveling to is your best option. They offer unlimited data in many Asian countries, but you won’t have the option of sharing the internet connection with other devices.

Tips for Using eSIM in Asia

If you’re traveling in China, look for an eSIM that includes a VPN in the price. Many international websites are region-blocked in China, and you can’t access them without a VPN. There are plenty of eSIM providers that include a VPN in the price, and this is just better value for money than having to pay for a VPN on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do i activate my esim in asia.

You can activate the eSIM by scanning a QR code with your phone. You can try just scanning the code with a basic QR code scanner – in some devices, this will prompt a push notification that will take you to the eSIM setup.

Another way to activate an eSIM is to go to Settings – Add Cellular Plan (on iPhone) / Add eSim (on Android) and then you can scan the QR code you got with your eSIM purchase. The setup process is easy and you just need to follow the on-screen instructions.

How can I buy an eSIM in Asia?

You can easily purchase an eSIM online, it’s just not recommended to activate the eSIM immediately after purchase. Instead, buy the eSim while you’re still at home and take a screenshot of the QR code, so you can set it up as soon as you land in Asia. That’s the best way to make the most of your eSIM.

What is the best eSIM for South East Asia?

The best eSIM for South East Asia is from either Airalo or Holafly if you want a data-only eSIM. South East Asia is covered well by both providers, and the data plans are fairly priced.

Airalo is by far the best option if you need a cheap eSIM and you don’t care about a phone number. Holafly is the better option if you need unlimited data – they’re much pricier than Airalo, but also the only eSim provider that offers truly unlimited data access.

What Data Says About the Asia-Pacific Rebound

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

May 8th, 2023 at 1:39 PM EDT

Guess who's back, back again? It's "Eastward Ho!" for global travelers, as the latest Skyscanner data makes clear.

Peden Doma Bhutia

Travelers are gaining more confidence to book long-haul travel again, and many destinations in the Asia Pacific region are making a comeback. Tokyo’s neon lights and skyscrapers, Phuket’s pristine beaches, and Hanoi’s Old Quarter, with its maze of narrow streets, are among the hotspots.

A report from travel marketplace Skyscanner has looked at flight search and booking data from the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa — studying how travelers are planning and booking travel over the next six months.

People are booking long-haul travel more than 90 days in advance, returning back to pre-pandemic levels. Moreover, the report also stated that search share has reverted to pre-pandemic seasonal norms.

“Globally, we’re seeing more travelers come to Skyscanner than ever before,” said Mike Ferguson , director of destination marketing. The brand, owned by Trip.com Group , has more than 100 million travelers accessing its platform every month on average.

More Signs of Flexible Search Patterns

More than 50 percent of travelers are conducting exploratory searches without any set dates or destinations in mind, Skyscanner said. Many travelers are searching for ideas and comparing dates and locations to find the most favorable deal.

In a conversation earlier with Skift, Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky pointed out how millions of customers have used the platform’s flexible date feature, which basically says, “I am willing to go anywhere for a night, a weekend, a week, a month in this date range.”

A Resurgence of Long-Haul Travel

The resurgence of long-haul travel globally presents destinations with a significant opportunity to attract high-value travelers undeterred by the challenging economic conditions, said Nick Hall, CEO of UK-based Digital Tourism Think Tank .

A key driver has been that airlines are adding back flight capacity .

Asia Pacific airlines posted a 376 percent increase in international traffic in January compared to the same period last year reaching 56 percent of January 2019’s level, as witnessed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) .

The January numbers were by far the strongest year-over-year rate among the regions — albeit off a very low base, when much of the region was still closed to travel.

Capacity in the region rose to 167 percent, and the load factor increased 36.6 percentage points to 83 percent — the highest among the world’s regions.

Trending Destinations

Eight of the world’s top 10 trending destinations for travelers worldwide are in Asia, with Taiwan topping the charts, followed by Japan and Laos.

data travel asia pacific

Despite Taiwan being the top trending destination, its relative share of searches is small. Japan takes the largest share, followed by South Korea and Vietnam.

Skyscanner noted that all three countries have benefited from improved non-stop services and air connections.

Saudi Arabia and Albania are the two nations outside Asia with the biggest increase in searches from last year during the first quarter.

Although Europe remains a popular region for travelers from the Americas, Asia Pacific destinations dominate seven out of the top 10 trending spots, with Asian countries occupying the top five spots.

China is the top trending destination, followed by Japan and Taiwan.

data travel asia pacific

For Asia Pacific travelers, seven out of the top 10 trending destinations are within the region itself, as Taiwan, Laos, and Japan experienced the most significant year-on-year growth in the first quarter.

Laos, in particular, enjoyed a resurgence due to the introduction of new routes from international and regional airlines and an increasing demand from travelers for more unique and off-the-beaten-path destinations.

During the second and third quarters, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam are the most popular destinations among travelers, accounting for more than two-thirds of the trending search volumes.

Booking Windows Go Up

Travelers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa are booking flights for summer holidays two to three months in advance, while those from Asia Pacific are booking both last minute and much further in advance, the report noted.

In the first quarter of this year, domestic travel bookings within Europe, the Middle East, and Africa were mostly booked in the 7-29 day window. The booking window further went up while planning for summer vacations as holidays booked 60-89 days in advance went up by 50 percent.

At the end of the first quarter, a booking window of more than 90 days still holds the highest share (31 percent) for travel to short-haul destinations from Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

data travel asia pacific

This confidence is also reflected in booking long-haul travel, particularly to Asia-Pacific, as the share of booking windows of over 90 days increased by 11 percent in the first quarter to reach 40 percent.

The travel booking time frame for Asia Pacific remained fairly consistent during the first quarter as travelers preferred shorter booking periods for domestic travel.

However, with the easing of travel restrictions ease, people are booking both last minute and with a longer booking horizon.

The Skyscanner report said that booking windows of over 90 days witnessed an increase of 55 percent for short-haul travel, while bookings of less than a week increased by 22 percent.

And as Asia Pacific travelers become more confident about traveling long-haul and planning, booking windows for long-haul trips have seen significant increases.

data travel asia pacific

For the Americas, booking windows are returning to seasonal norms as travelers plan their domestic and short-haul trips at least two months out.

Asia Pacific Travel & Tourism Sector Set to Recover by Nearly 40%, Reveals WTTC Report

data travel asia pacific

If key measures are followed the sector could restore more than 47 million jobs by 2022

London, UK: New research from the World Travel & Tourism Council ( WTTC ) reveals the recovery of the Asia Pacific Travel & Tourism sector has soared ahead of many regions in the world with a year on year growth of more than 36%.

Before the pandemic struck, Asia Pacific’s Travel & Tourism sector’s contribution to GDP represented more than US$ 3 trillion (9.9% of the region’s economy).

After the pandemic brought international travel to an almost complete standstill, in 2020, Asia Pacific saw a hit of almost 54%, halving the contribution of the Travel & Tourism sector to the region’s economy.

However, according to the research, and based on the current rate of recovery, the sector’s contribution to the region’s GDP could see a year on year increase of 36.3% this year, ahead of the global average of 30.7%, which represents an increase of US$ 515 billion.

The data also reveals Travel & Tourism’s contribution to the Asia Pacific economy could see a similar year on year rise of 35.8% in 2022, representing an increase of US$ 692 billion.

Domestic spend is expected to grow by 49% by the end of this year and experience a year on year rise of more than a quarter (25.5%) in 2022.

WTTC’s research goes on to show that while international spend is predicted to drop by nearly 25% on 2020 figures, one of the worst years on record for the Travel & Tourism sector, 2022 is looking more positive.

Next year, international spend growth is set to rise by US$ 156 billion (148%) providing a massive boost to the region’s economy.

In terms of employment, in 2019, the Asia Pacific Travel & Tourism sector supported more than 185 million jobs.

After a loss of over 34 million jobs last year, when travel restrictions brought international mobility to an almost complete standstill, devastating livelihoods across the region and around the world, employment growth is set to rise by a marginal 0.4% in 2021.

However, employment growth could experience a 19.8% year on year increase, reaching more than 181 million jobs in 2022.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Our research clearly shows that while the global Travel & Tourism sector is beginning to recover, Asia Pacific is doing so at a much faster rate.

“Many countries in the APAC region, such as the Philippines, host to our prestigious annual Global Summit next March, are not only ramping up their entire vaccination programme, but also focusing on speeding up the vaccination rollout in key tourism destinations in order to reboot their Travel & Tourism sectors.

“With high vaccination rates around the region, and a predicted rise in international and domestic spend next year, the outlook for both jobs and GDP is looking much more positive for next year.”

According to the research, the sector’s contribution to the region’s GDP and the rise in jobs could be more positive this year and next, if five vital measures are met by governments around the world.

These measures include allowing fully vaccinated travellers to move freely, irrespective of their origin or eventual destination.

Secondly, the implementation of digital solutions which enable all travellers to easily prove their COVID status, in turn speeding up the process at borders around the world.

Thirdly, for safe international travel to fully restart, governments must recognise for all vaccines authorised by WHO.

Fourthly, continued support of the COVAX/UNICEF initiative to ensure equitable distribution of vaccines around the world.

Finally, the continued implementation of enhanced health and safety protocols, which will underpin customer confidence.

The future could be brighter for Asia Pacific

If these five vital measures are followed before the end of 2021, research shows the impact on the economy and jobs across Asia Pacific could be considerable.

The Travel & Tourism’s contribution to GDP would benefit from these measures and could rise by 46.7% (US$ 661 billion) by the end of this year, and a further year on year rise of 37.8% (US$ 785 billion) in 2022.

According to the research, domestic spend could increase by 59% this year, followed by a 26.2% growth in 2022.

Although international spend could continue to plunge by 12.6% in 2021, it could experience a massive boost of 153% next year, representing a rise of US$ 188 billion.

Employment could see an 8% rise this year, and a year on year increase of 21.6% in 2022, recovering more than 47 million jobs by next year. This would exceed pre-pandemic levels and provide the region with an additional 13 million jobs.

Strong tourism growth predicted for Asia-Pacific in 2023 to 2025: PATA

data travel asia pacific

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has released updated forecasts for 39 Asia-Pacific destinations showing a strong increase in aggregate international visitor arrivals (IVAs) under each of three scenarios in 2023, with robust annual growth continuing to the end of 2025.

Sponsored by Visa and with data and insights from Euromonitor International, the PATA Asia Pacific Destination Forecasts 2023-2025 suite of reports build on the current forecasts by delving deeper into the changing dynamics of travel and tourism into and across the Asia-Pacific region at the single destination level facilitating the development of appropriate strategies over the next three years.

Predicted international arrival numbers in 2023 range from 705 million under the mild scenario to 516 million under the medium scenario, and almost 390 million under the severe scenario, equating to visitor numbers in 2023 that exceed that of pre-pandemic 2019 by 3.3% under the mild scenario, but still nearly 25% short of it under the medium scenario, and some 43% behind it under the severe scenario.

By the end of 2024, the 2019 benchmark level of IVAs will be exceeded even further under the mild scenario and by 6.7% under the medium scenario, with both positions increasing in strength to 2025. Under the severe scenario, however, IVAs in 2025 are still predicted to fall short of the 2019 level by some 10%.

In this suite of reports, PATA covers each of 39 destinations in much greater detail, with a focus on source markets and air capacity changes in each case. Forecasts for mainland China indicate that very strong annual growth rates are expected in 2023 under each of the three scenarios, but not passing the 2019 volumes until 2024 under the mild and medium scenarios.

Despite very strong annual increases in arrivals from mainland China to Asia-Pacific destinations, under the severe scenario, that number is still expected to lag the 2019 peak by around 6% by the end of 2025.

PATA chair Peter Semone noted that “while these forecasts are extremely encouraging, hurdles still remain, and the travel and tourism sector will require ongoing vigilance and operational flexibility as these issues present themselves over the coming years” and although Covid-19 is no longer at the global pandemic stage, “it has not disappeared entirely, and we must come to grips with living with it for some time yet”.

He added that the conflict in Ukraine will “all have to be dealt with in ways that satisfy the increasingly diverse demands of the traveller of both today and tomorrow”.

David Fowler, head of cross-border & sales excellence, Asia-Pacific, Visa, said: “PATA’s forecasts offer the travel industry with a much-needed and renewed sense of optimism after almost three years of border closures. Nonetheless, many headwinds lie ahead as traveller habits and preferences have changed substantially in a post-pandemic and hyper-digitalised world. The travel industry needs to understand the unique needs of travellers, many who are digital natives, in order to offer the flexible, novel and personalised travel experiences that they have come to expect.

“Building data capabilities will continue to be a key area of investment for the travel ecosystem as it navigates the shifts in travel patterns through data insights, and in turn respond with data-backed customer engagement strategies.”

Visa recently set up a new Centre of Excellence for travel in Asia-Pacific dedicated to help clients and partners use data insights to maximise opportunities in the travel space. Fowler pointed out that it is “now more critical than ever that the travel industry is well-informed through data, so enterprises – especially smaller ones – and local communities can react faster as travel recovery accelerates across Asia-Pacific”.

Each of these 39 reports covers a specific destination in the Asia-Pacific and individually provides annual forecasts of visitor arrival numbers into each destination between 2023 and 2025 by scenario and source region; recovery rates for international visitor arrival growth back to the 2019 benchmark; annual changes in relative visitor share by top source market, year, and scenario; seasonality pattern; quarterly changes in scheduled international inbound air seat capacity to 3Q2022; and economic, income and expenditure outlook & trends, and domestic tourism.

Factset expands existing suite of asia-pacific private company data coverage.

June 27, 2024

NORWALK, Conn., June 27, 2024 -- FactSet, a global financial digital platform and enterprise solutions provider, today announced a significant expansion of its content offerings for private companies in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, bringing the total number of private companies covered in the region to more than 1.6 million . This expansion specifically targets China, Japan, and Australia, providing investment banks and private equity (PE) firms with in-depth firmographics and enhanced financial data to streamline their deal sourcing and due diligence workflows.

“The APAC region is a hub for dynamic private companies attracting increasing investment interest,” said Jason Weinstein, Senior Director at FactSet. “By providing comprehensive data on these companies, we equip investment banks and PE firms with the critical insights they need to drive superior outcomes throughout the deal lifecycle.”

Limited access to private company intelligence and financials restricts investment bankers and PE professionals from conducting efficient deal research and finding new investment opportunities. Building on FactSet’s current APAC data coverage, this expansion strengthens FactSet’s position as a trusted provider for investment professionals in the APAC region and offers enhanced insights into private market datasets to enable users to save time and identify high-potential investment targets.

The new datasets include expanded coverage, including key firmographics such as executive profiles, subsidiaries, business activities, ratios, and growth metrics to assess a company’s financial health and derive its valuation for more than 546,000 private companies with over 1 million USD in revenue across APAC. In Japan, coverage increased by 124,000 private companies, with 91,000 of those private companies with recent financials. In China, coverage grew by 413,000 new private companies, all with recent financial data. In Australia, FactSet added coverage for 9,000 new private companies and financials for 11,000 private companies.

This differentiated data is integrated into FactSet’s intelligent digital platform, which provides a single source for in-depth private company data, along with the company’s industry-leading public company content. Investment bankers and private equity dealmakers can leverage FactSet’s GenAI-powered screening tools to identify promising private companies across key APAC markets and perform thorough due diligence to navigate the investment landscape with confidence.

"Our initial APAC private market data expansion was a step in the right direction, but as industry professionals require access to more private company data, we continue to make significant investments for our clients,” said Weinstein. “We’re proud to provide private market firms with tools to build confidence and inform investment decision-making while helping our clients assess potential risks, fundraising prospects, and portfolios through our competitive insights.”

Memorable father-daughter spring holiday in Pakistan's Hunza Valley

  • Asia & Oceania

Friday, 28 Jun 2024

The writer and his daughter during their tour of Pakistan. — Photos: DATUK DR TAN CHEE KHUAN

Earlier this year, my daughter and I went to Pakistan where we were especially fascinated by the spring blossoms in the Hunza Valley.

When we first arrived in Lahore, we were met by our guide, Sami, who looks Caucasian with his blonde hair and fair skin. He thinks it is probably because he has some Macedonian blood.

Sami brought us to visit a fort and several Moghul palaces. They look kind of similar to the Taj Mahal in India as they were built by the same emperor, Shah Jahan, for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Then, we went by bus to Swat Valley. The journey took many hours, and we even passed through Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.

We saw some magnificent snow-capped mountains which reminded me of the Swiss Alps. We stopped every now and then to take pictures of the scenery, and later visited the ancient Buddhist monastery Takht-I-Bahi, a Unesco World Heritage Site. It was built more than 2,000 years ago as a Buddhist monastery complex with numerous stupas and monastic cells for meditation. We had to climb about 300 steps to see the remains of this ancient wonder.

In Chilas, the entry point to the northern areas of Pakistan, we enjoyed majestic views of the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and the Himalayas. We travelled on the Karakoram Highway, too, said to be the most spectacular road in the world. This 900km-long road was completed in 1978 after 20 years of construction by Chinese and Pakistani workers to link the two countries. It has many tunnels along the way, as well as the infamous Khunjerab Pass, the world’s highest pass. This highway has beautiful views of gorges, glaciers, lakes, rivers, and mountains.

The altitude was about 4,733m above sea level, so those who feel that they would be prone to altitude sickness were advised to start taking diamox tablets a day earlier.

The next day, we drove to Gilgit-Baltistan to see the Three Mountain Ranges, and then continued on to Hunza. We visited the Baltic Fort which was built by former rulers of Hunza some 900 years ago, as well as the Altic Fort. These forts depict the glorious military traditions of the former kingdom of Hunza, which was a dominant power in the region.

Later, we had lunch under some apricot trees at Sami’s sister’s house.

We also went to Nagar Valley and Upper Hunza to admire the gorgeous spring flowers, the cherry, apricot and apple blossoms.

Beautiful spring blossoms set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

The next day, our journey back to Lahore began. We again drove to the Khunjerab Pass, to check out the world’s highest paved border crossing linked to China’s Xinjiang region. We walked a short distance to the border but as it was very cold, I decided to turn back and stay in the warm bus. As I was walking back, I was delighted to see a pussy willow plant, which reminded me of Chinese New Year, when we would buy some to decorate the house.

At Gilgit we stopped to visit the Kargha Buddha, an archaeological site with a carved Buddha on the side of the cliff. We also went shopping for some dried fruit (dried apricot and mulberry were especially popular), nuts and souvenirs at the Gilgit bazaar. We stayed the night at the town.

The next morning, we took a flight to Islamabad and managed to see a few more places of interest, before taking off for our flight to Bangkok, Thailand where we had a pretty long layover.

This was a really tiring trip, but the places my daughter and I visited made the travel all worthwhile, especially after seeing the beautiful snow-capped mountains and fascinating spring blossoms.

The views expressed are entirely the reader’s own.
