How to Apply for an Iceland Tourist Visa from India

Step 1:  collect required documents.

Ensure you have all the necessary documents mentioned above in order, clear, and photocopied.

Step 2:  Choose the Application Center

Since Iceland doesn't have its own embassy in India, visa applications are handled by VFS Global, a visa application outsourcing company. Locate your nearest VFS Global centre accepting Icelandic Schengen visa applications.

Step 3:  Schedule an Appointment

Most VFS Global centres require appointments for visa submissions. Schedule yours online or by phone through the VFS Global website for Iceland.

Step 4:  Submit your Application

Visit the VFS Global Center on your appointment date and submit your completed application form along with all required documents and the visa fee.

Step 5:  Biometric Data Collection

During your appointment, you might be required to provide fingerprints and a digital photograph for biometric data collection.

Step 6:  Visa Interview (Possible)

In some cases, the visa authorities may request an interview to discuss your travel plans or verify your documents.

Step 7:  Visa Processing and Collection

Visa processing typically takes around 10-15 working days. You can track your application status online or through VFS Global. Once approved, collect your passport with the visa stamp from the VFS Global Center.

How Much Bank Balance is Required for Iceland Tourist Visa?

The Icelandic authorities generally expect applicants to have around 20,000 Icelandic krona (ISK) (approximately €144) per day of their stay to cover their daily expenses.

**Note: This is just a guideline, and the actual amount you need might vary depending on your planned activities and accommodation type.**

Iceland Tourist Visa Bank Balance Information to estimate costs

Accommodation: Budget hostels can cost around ISK 5,000-7,000 per night, while mid-range hotels might range from ISK 10,000-15,000. Luxury accommodations can significantly increase your daily expenses.

Food: Eating out in Iceland can be expensive. A basic meal at a restaurant can cost around ISK 2,000-3,000, while fancier restaurants can be much pricier. Consider grocery shopping and preparing some meals yourself for a more budget-friendly option.

Transportation: Public transport in Iceland, particularly in Reykjavik, is efficient but can be expensive. Renting a car offers more flexibility but adds fuel costs to your daily expenses. Consider travel passes or exploring by bicycle if you're on a tight budget.

Activities: Popular tourist activities like glacier walks, geothermal lagoon visits, and whale-watching tours can be quite expensive. Factor in the cost of these experiences when estimating your daily expenses.

Yes, ordinary Indian passport holders need a visa to visit Iceland. Iceland is part of the Schengen Area, which means that Indian passport holders require a Schengen visa to enter Iceland for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe. This visa allows travellers to visit Iceland and other Schengen countries for tourism, family visits, or short business trips.

Broadly, there are two kinds of Iceland visas for Indians-

  • Short-term Schengen Visa (Type C): A Schengen visa allows Indians to make a short, temporary visit of up to 90 days in any 180-day timeframe to Iceland and 28 other Schengen countries. It is primarily used for tourism, family visits, or short business trips. You can apply for an Iceland visa from India only through VFS Global - Iceland’s official visa-handling partner in India.
  • Long-term National Visa (Type D): The Long-term National Visa (Type D) for Iceland allows Indian citizens to stay in Iceland for longer periods, for purposes such as work or study. This visa is designed for stays exceeding 90 days within a 180-day time period. Applicants must meet specific requirements and provide supporting documents related to their intended stay, such as employment contracts or enrollment in educational institutions.

Application for D Visas for Iceland should go to the Directorate of Immigration Department, Iceland. Once the application is accepted, the Directorate will request the applicant to visit the nearest visa application centre to submit the application.

Below is the list of all documents required for applying for an Iceland visa from India:

Other documents, additional documents if the applicant is applying for a business visa:, additional documents if the applicant is visiting friends and family.

Photo requirements for Iceland visas for Indians should meet the following criteria:

  • The photo should be taken within the last 6 months.
  • The background should be white.
  • The face should be in focus and should take up to 70-80% of the photograph
  • The facial expression should be neutral.
  • Headwear is only allowed if worn for religious reasons.
  • Sunglasses are not permitted. Glasses in spectacles should not reflect light.
  • Photo dimensions: 3.5 X 4.5 cm.

Indians need to submit their Schengen type ‘C’ visa application to Iceland VFS Global visa application centres - the official visa partner of the Icelandic government in India. VFS Global then transfers the application to the Embassy of Iceland which finally decides on your application.

It becomes confusing sometimes to determine where to apply for your Schengen visa. Here are some pointers that can help -

  • When travelling to more than one Schengen country, remember to submit your application with the Embassy of the country where you will be staying the longest.
  • In case of equally long stays, apply with the Schengen country where you arrive first. If you plan on travelling to a country outside of the Schengen Region (for example the US or Saudi Arabia), apply for the other visa first, before applying for the Schengen visa.

Below is the step-by-step guide to applying for your short-term Schengen type ‘C’ Iceland visa through VFS Global-

Step 1: Identify Your Visa Type

The first step is to determine the right visa for your trip. For tourism apply for a tourist visa, for business trips, apply for a business visa, etc. These are all categorised under Schengen type ‘C’ visa. Ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria, and know your Iceland visa requirements for Indian citizens, the fee and documentation required for your visa type, etc. Also, ensure that your documents are in English.

Step 2: Fill Out Your Iceland Visa Application Form

For Indian citizens, the validity of an Iceland Schengen visa typically ranges from the intended duration of stay, usually up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe.

Schengen visa extensions are possible in exceptional circumstances, such as force majeure situations or unexpected events like natural calamities or severe health issues. Applicants must submit extension requests before their visa expires, providing valid reasons and supporting documentation.

Here are the most common reasons why your visa application to Iceland can get rejected-

  • Providing Inaccurate Information: Providing inaccurate, false or incomplete information on your Iceland tourist visa application form is a guaranteed way to get your current and future visa applications rejected. Remember, honesty is the best policy, even when it comes to filing your visa application forms.
  • Lack of Funds: Inadequate funds in your bank account hint at your inability to cover your stay expenses. Make sure you have enough funds in your bank and you also provide ample proof in the form ITRs, salary slips, and bank statements to substantiate your claim.
  • Criminal Background: A history of criminal activities or involvement in illegal actions can lead to visa rejection.
  • Weak Ties to India: Lack of strong ties to India suggests one may overstay their visa in Iceland. To avoid this, highlight strong connections like family, job, property, or other commitments here in India.
  • Suspicion of Fraudulent Intent: Failing to explain your visit's purpose clearly can make Icelandic officials suspicious. For example, a tourist visa to Iceland is not meant for employment. Icelandic authorities can reject those visa applications where they suspect an intention to work while touring Iceland.

Personal Visit

What people say about us

Iceland visa policy.

According to the visa policy of Iceland, all visitors must have visas unless they are from visa exempt countries. This policy is quite holistic and covers the entry regulations for all visitors, regardless of their nationality. Iceland is one of the Schengen countries in Europe, having signed the Schengen agreement. This makes it a Passport free zone in Europe with similar visa policies to other Schengen countries.

Whether a visitor requires a visa depends on their nationality, the purpose of their visit, and the duration they hope to stay. Also, citizens of other Schengen countries are free to visit other countries in the zone without visas or passports, and they can stay in these countries for as long as they wish. All they need is a Valid ID card issued by their home government.

As for citizens from visa-exempt countries on the Schengen list, they can stay in Iceland or any other Schengen country for up to 3 months provided they have a valid passport an online entry authorization called ETIAS.

Schengen Visa

Being a Schengen country, Iceland is eligible to issue Schengen visas to visitors from non-visa-exempt countries. Thus visa is valid for six months and allows for visits of up to 90 days. Furthermore, holders are free to visit any other Schengen country in the zone because of its overall universal acceptance in the Schengen zone.

Non-visa-exempt visitors can use this visa for tourism, business, or transit, but it can’t be used for study, work, or any other long-term commitment.

Iceland ETIAS

The European Travel Information and Authorization System is a new program to launch in full force in 2024. This screening program is targeted at visitors f I’m visa exempt countries.

Before now, you only needed to show a valid passport at the entry point if you were from a visa-exempt nation. However, the introduction of ETIAS is set to change everything.

ETIAS was introduced to strengthen border security of European nations by pre-screening visitors for threats before they arrive on the continent. The program is still in the pilot phase but will become mandatory for all visa-exempt visitors by 2024.

To apply for ETIAS, the applicant must complete an online application form and submit it for review. The system will take a few minutes to screen their data across multiple databases, and if no alert is triggered, approval will be granted via email.

Holders of ETIAS can visit other Schengen countries apart from Iceland, and the authorization is valid for 3 years or as long as the Passport it is attached to remains valid. You can use it for visits of up to 90 days within a 180 days period, but you cannot use it for work.

Persons whose data trigger a security alert in any of the databases used will not be allowed into Europe. However, the EU Commission states that one may reapply a second time even if their initial application was denied.

Travel Tips and Key Information About Iceland ETIAS

It Will Be Mandatory:  ETIAS is currently undergoing testing for now before full-scale implementation. For now, visitors from eligible countries can visit with or without it but come 2024, without ETIAS, they will not be allowed to enter Iceland or any Schengen country for that matter.

Some Countries Are Off Limit:  While you can visit non-Schengen countries like Bulgaria with ETIAS, some European countries are off-limits. You cannot use ETIAS to enter the United Kingdom or The Republic of Ireland as their visa policy is distinct from that of the EU.

Not A Visa:  Note that ETIAS is not a visa and should not be used as such. It is an entry permit only issued to visitors from authorized persons. While you must visit the embassy or consulate to get a Schengen visa, you don’t need the same to get Etias.

Passport:  Your ETIAS is connected to the Passport you applied with, so always bring it along on your trip, not a different passport. Also, note that your ETIAS will automatically expire if the Passport expires, even if it is not up to 3 years.

Application Fee:  While the application fee is mandatory, not all applicants need to pay this fee. Applicants under 18 and above 70 are exempted from ETIAS fees. Others within this age bracket must pay the fee.

Security Questions:  The ETIAS application form contains a separate section for security questions that must be answered before submitting the form. These questions will cover a few areas and must be answered honestly.

90/180 Day Rule:  Under this rule, visitors are not allowed to stay in any Schengen country or set of countries for more than 90 days within 6 months. The first day they set foot in the Schengen zone, the time starts counting the following day. This means they must conclude their business and leave on the 90th day. In case they spent the full 90 days during their last trip, they must wait for the 6 months cycle to end before their next visit.

Use Approved Routes:  When traveling to Iceland or any other country, always use approved airports and seaports so you don’t encounter any difficulty along the way. The approved routes are the legal and safe routes of entry.

How to Apply for an Indian e-Visa in 7 Easy Steps

D id you know that you need a visa to visit India unless you’re a citizen of Nepal or Bhutan? Since taking the  DNA test with Ancestry , I've made it a mission to visit the countries listed in my DNA results. My cousin Krista will be traveling to India (aka our other motherland)  solo,  and today, she’s sharing my first guest post on how to get a visa to India from the US in seven easy steps.

I was so excited to be going to India, so the first person I called was my travel buddy , Cousin Joanna. She was so excited on the phone and said, "My friend just came back and said it was easy to apply for an Indian visa in person."  Ladies and gentlemen, I didn't know I needed a visa to travel from the U.S. to India . Thank the travel Gods, I had enough time before my trip and applied for an electronic or e-visa.

The Indian e-visa processing time was very quick. I filled out the online Indian visa form on Friday night and received an approved Indian visa application status ("Granted e-Visa") by Sunday afternoon. It was super easy! If you’re looking for how to get a visa to India from the US, read more and follow the steps below.

How to Apply for an Indian e-Visa

Step 1: realize you need a visa.

Freak out that you were about to go to the other side of the world like a dummy with no Visa. For U.S. citizens, this means obtaining an Indian tourist visa, often called an e-tourist visa. This type of visa allows for short-term travel to India for tourism, casual visits, short-term yoga programs, or visits to friends and family.

Step 2: Visit the Indian e-Visa Portal

Calm down, and then head to the official Indian Visa Online website. The process is entirely online, making it convenient for applicants worldwide, including those holding U.S. passports, Pakistani passports, and laissez-passer travel documents. Select the e-Visa Application menu to start the process.

Calm down, then go to the Indian Visa Online Website and select the e-Visa Application  menu.

Things You'll Need to Complete the Application:

  • A scanned PDF copy of your valid passport (with at least six months of validity and two blank pages).
  • A recent photo with a white background (this must be different from your passport photo and saved as a JPEG between 10KB and 1MB).
  • The address and phone number of your contact in India.
  • A list of countries you’ve visited in the last 10 years.
  • Details of the places you plan to visit in India.
  • Your parents’ nationality status.
  • A credit card or banking information for payment (applicable e-Visa fees).

Step 3: Complete the Application and Pay the Fee

After filling out the e-Visa application form, click "Pay Now." Payments are processed through SBIePay, the State Bank of India’s payment aggregator service.

This platform accepts MasterCard and Visa credit/debit cards. Be patient if the payment doesn’t go through immediately-wait for 4 hours before trying again to avoid getting blocked.

Step 4: Check Your Indian Visa Application Status

Once your payment is successfully processed, you’ll receive an email with your application status. If the status shows as “Granted,” you're almost ready to go!

Step 5: Print Out Your e-Visa

Click the link in your email to access your granted e-visa. Enter your application ID and print out your e-visa in color. It's a good idea to make multiple copies, as you’ll need to present them to an immigration officer for review on arrival before stamping your passport.

Step 6: Keep Your Documents Handy

Once in India, keep a copy of your e-visa and passport with you at all times.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Trip to India

With your visa in hand, you’re ready to explore India! Whether you’re visiting for a casual trip, medical treatment, or business, ensure you adhere to the visa requirements, including the maximum stay period, which is 60 days for e-tourist visas.

Additional Information for U.S. Citizens and Other Travelers

For u.s. citizens.

U.S. citizens can apply for the e-Visa for various purposes, including tourism, business, and medical treatment. If you’re traveling for a specific purpose like attending a conference or seeking medical treatment, you’ll need to select the appropriate type of visa (e-conference visa or e-medical visa).

Official Passport Holders

Holders of official passports or international travel documents, such as those issued by the United Nations, need to apply for a regular visa through the nearest Indian Embassy or Consulate General of India. The e-Visa facility is generally not available for such cases.

For Family Members

If you’re traveling with family, ensure each member, including children, has a separate passport and an individual e-Visa. Spouses should carry copies of each other's visas and passports, especially if one is a non-U.S. citizen.

Business and Employment Visas

For those planning to work or engage in business in India, it’s crucial to apply for the correct visa type, such as an employment visa or e-business visa. These visas often have different requirements, such as a business card or documentary evidence of employment.

Pakistani Nationals and Those of Pakistani Origin

Individuals holding Pakistani passports or of Pakistani origin must apply for a regular paper visa, as the e-Visa service does not extend to them. The process may involve additional scrutiny and longer processing times.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • For most e-Visa categories, the maximum stay period is 60 days, and this can only be extended under specific circumstances.
  • Yes, but you must use the passport you will be traveling with. Ensure that this passport meets the six-month validity requirement.
  • You must apply using a new passport, as the e-Visa is electronically linked to your passport number. Carrying an old passport with a valid visa will not be accepted.
  • Typically, it takes about 3-5 business days. However, it’s advisable to apply at least a week before your planned arrival date in India.
  • For more details, visit the Government of India website or contact the nearest Indian Embassy. You can also use the dedicated website and helpline numbers provided on the e-Visa portal for additional information.

Applying for an Indian e-visa is relatively easy if you have all the necessary documents and follow the guidelines carefully. Whether you’re visiting for leisure, a short-term yoga program, medical treatment, or business, ensure that you meet all the visa requirements and keep track of your visa status before your trip.
