I attended a Bread concert with a young lady friend at the Seattle Opera House. She passed away a few years later but I will always cherish that evening 50 years on. Thank you, David Gates for bringing joy to someone whose life was cut short before long before her time. Her name was Myken Ellison and I miss her.

Remember David Gates, Who Led the ’70s Soft-Rock Group Bread?

david gates bread tour

David Gates is at far R

If you were listening to Top 40 radio in the U.S. throughout the ’70s, chances are you’d hear a song by the band with the bland name Bread. The group, fronted by David Gates, their songwriter, producer and primary guitarist and vocalist, earned six Top 10 singles on the Hot 100 including the soft-rock favorites “Baby I’m-a Want You,” “If” and the 1970 #1 hit, “Make It With You.”

Gates, a multi-instrumentalist who also played keyboards and percussion, founded the popular group in Los Angeles in 1968 as a vehicle for singing his own songs. He wrote most of their trademark hits including “The Guitar Man,” “It Don’t Matter To Me” and “Lost Without Your Love.”

Gates was born December 11, 1940, the son of musicians in Tulsa, Okla. His first band, the Accents, included a piano player, Claude Russell Bridges, who later changed his name to Leon Russell. Gates received his first break when the band performed with Chuck Berry. Gates married his high school sweetheart, Jo Rita, in 1959.

In 1961, the family moved to Los Angeles, where Gates pursued a career in music, initially working as a studio musician and writing songs. His first significant songwriting accomplishment arrived in early 1964 when the Murmaids earned a #3 single with his song, “Popsicles and Icicles.” As the decade continued, Gates released several singles on his own and collaborated with many stars, including Elvis Presley and Bobby Darin.

In 1968, he teamed with Robb Royer and Jimmy Griffin to form Bread and soon signed with Elektra Records, their home throughout their career. Their 1969 self-titled debut, recorded with session drummers Jim Gordon and Ron Edgar, was a modest success. Later that year, Mike Botts joined as their permanent drummer.

Their second album became a legitimate success, reaching #12 in the U.S., thanks to the ballad “Make It With You,” which topped the pop singles chart in 1970.

A song from their first album, “It Don’t Matter To Me,” was re-recorded and also became a significant hit, reaching #10. In 1971, Royer departed and was replaced by Larry Knechtel, a member of the Los Angeles-based studio musicians collective The Wrecking Crew .

Bread recorded six studio albums, five of which went gold. Their 1972 release, Baby I’m-A Want You , was one of the year’s top sellers , alongside such rock superstars as Led Zeppelin, Elton John and Rod Stewart. A March 1973 compilation album, The Best of Bread , has been certified 5x platinum. The group initially disbanded that year but reunited several times later that decade. Bread’s career neatly parallels America and the Carpenters, other soft-rock groups of that era.

As a solo artist, Gates charted many singles. His biggest was the top 15 title track to the 1977 romantic comedy-drama The Goodbye Girl .

Gates was joined on a reunion tour in 1996-97 by Griffin, Botts and Knechtel.  He retired, thanks to the, er, bread from his royalties, to become a rancher in northern California. “I really did drop out and really wanted to do it… to jump right in and do a complete job as a cattle rancher,” he told an interviewer in 2003 . “It took five or six years to accomplish the goals I set for myself. I couldn’t do music at the same time.

“My records are still being played around the world and maybe they are somewhat timeless in that you can hear them over and over and not get tired of them. And there’s no one writing anything quite like that now.”

Gates is the sole surviving member from their heyday. Bread’s Best of album is available here .

Anyone who thinks Bread only did soft rock numbers should check out the “Anthology” collection. They were just as capable of rocking out, though those didn’t get released as singles.

It was released without too much fanfare but David Gates recorded a solo country oriented album in 1993 or 94 called Love is Always Seventeen.

Oddly enough, one of my favorite Bread songs was one of their rockers, “Mother Freedom”. But I still think “The Guitar Man” is the best song Gates wrote, with some great guitar provided by Larry Knechtel.

“Let your love go” was always my favorite.

In 1972 I was a sophomore in college and Bread played at our campus. My folks, along with my two brothers, visited and attended the concert with me. After the concert my Dad said he wanted a cup of coffee and piece of pie. We went to hole in the wall coffee shop and there sat David Gates with members of the band. They were dressed in the same clothes they performed in. We said hello and complimented them on the concert. He and the others couldn’t have been nicer.

David Gates did a solo tour backed by a wonderful string section in 2006. We saw this at a small room at Mohegan Sun in CT. An incredible evening. Just wish the concert would be made available to us fans.

Bread: Where Are They Now?

By Michael Azerrad

Michael Azerrad

Bread virtually invented soft rock in the early Seventies, and the group’s biggest hits — “Make It With You,” “If,” “Baby I’m-a Want You” and “Everything I Own” — remain staples on lite-rock radio. For all the mellowness of Bread’s music, however, the band dissolved acrimoniously, and the bad feelings last to this day.

Tensions date back to the group’s first hit. In 1968, veteran singer-songwriter James Griffin hired David Gates as an arranger on the recommendation of a mutual friend, Robb Royer. Along with Royer, they formed a band, signed with Elektra and named themselves Bread after getting stuck in traffic behind a Wonder Bread truck.

When their first album bombed, Gates and Griffin added bassist Larry Knechtel and drummer Mike Botts. (Royer dropped out, though he continued to write songs for them.) The group recorded “Make It With You,” a gentle, dreamy pop song that went to Number One in 1970. At the time, Gates and Griffin — the group’s principal songwriters — had informally agreed to alternate singles. Because Gates’s songs consistently charted high, the agreement fell through, and Griffin began playing Salieri to Gates’s pop Mozart.

The band broke up in 1973, briefly re-forming three years later to record Lost Without Your Love . A protracted legal battle between Gates and Griffin, co-owners of the Bread name, was waged over its use on a Griffin-less tour. “We all got slapped with suits claiming we were conspiring to stifle [Griffin’s] career,” says Mike Botts. A judge ordered that the group could not record, perform or collect royalties until the case was resolved. The litigation stretched out until 1984.

After Bread broke up, Gates wrote the title song for the film version of Neil Simon’s Goodbye Girl , which became a Top Twenty hit in 1978. Soon after, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of running a ranch, disappearing with his wife and four kids to an 800-acre spread in northern California. “I’m taking care of cows, riding horses and running farm equipment,” says Gates, 48, who still writes songs and is completing a twenty-four-track studio. A satellite dish allows him to keep up with music via MTV and VH-1. His hobby is predicting what will hit the Top Five. “Man, I nail it every time,” he says. “Play me a record, and I’ll tell you how far it’s going to go.”

For fourteen years, Larry Knechtel worked on his own cattle ranch, but he recently quit the farm and moved to a suburb of Nashville to pursue music again. He’s just released Mountain Moods , a New Age record, and is in Elvis Costello’s current road band. A longtime sessionman with an impressive rock & roll resume prior to Bread, Knechtel admits he was somewhat uncomfortable playing Bread’s mellow music. “Whenever somebody in the back of the hall would yell, ‘ Boogie ,’ I’d feel damn miserable,” he says, “because I knew there was no way that this band was gonna get up and boogie.”

Botts, 42, writes jingles and music for children’s albums and does background vocals and session work. Encouraged by such friends as Linda Ronstadt and J.D. Souther, he’s taken up songwriting and is shopping around demos in hopes of landing a record deal.

Recently, Griffin moved to Nashville from Memphis, where he’d been living since Bread’s breakup. He has a new group called Dreamer and is cutting an album that will include some Bread remakes. Griffin unsuccessfully tried to coax Gates into a reunion tour last year. “He’s comfortable up there playing cowboy,” says Griffin. “He doesn’t want to go out and be, as he puts it, a museum piece.” Griffin would be willing to work with the other members but says, “I don’t think the feeling is mutual.” He’s right — Knechtel won’t even speak to him, and Botts says, “We couldn’t forgive and forget that easily.”

Even if relations were friendlier, a Bread reunion would be unlikely. Says Gates, “Sometimes it’s better to be grateful and stay the heck out of the limelight when your best work is behind you.”

David Gates’ ‘BREAD’ is Back for a Reunion Tour in 1976

David Gates led ‘Bread,” fueling their chart-topping success by writing a string of hits for the soft-rock band in the 1970s.

‘70s Hit-Maker Bread to Serve Slices of Past

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

When singer-songwriter-guitarist David Gates bid adieu to the L.A. rat race 10 years ago, it wasn’t long before he grew fond of the slower-paced, rural lifestyle provided by his 6,500-acre ranch near Lake Shasta. Spending more time with his wife--and up to 550 head of cattle--felt like a natural transition to the Oklahoma native.

Sure, once in a while Gates got the urge to write some new songs. In 1994, he was coaxed out of semiretirement to record a solo LP titled “Love Is Always Seventeen” (Elektra Records). But a reunion of his old band--’70s soft-rock hit-makers Bread--was the furthest thing from his mind.

Then a phone call a couple of years ago from a South African-born, Los Angeles-based concert promoter named Selwyn Miller changed all that. The longtime Bread fan was the catalyst behind the group’s ongoing 25th anniversary world tour, which arrives at the Orange County Performing Arts Center on Friday night.

“Selwyn called me and said, ‘Ya know, Bread is still very popular worldwide. Have you ever thought about doing any touring outside of America?’ ” recalled Gates during a recent phone interview. “And I told him we always wanted to, but we broke up before we ever got the chance.”

After mulling it over, Gates began to like the idea more. In February, all four members gathered (for the first time in 17 years) in a Nashville hotel room and agreed to a reunion tour. Miller became the group’s manager.

“I really had no great desire to play in the States again,” Gates said. “But to do the tour we never got to do, and play our hit songs in all of these foreign countries, was just too good to pass up.”

At first glance, some may mistakenly lump Bread into the let’s-milk-our-oldies circuit frequented by America, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chicago and the like. Sure, they too offer plenty of oldies. But the quartet hasn’t performed them live since it disbanded for a second time in 1978, and its current tour materialized only because of Gates’ desire to finally play abroad.

Before committing to this reunion, Gates--the group’s leader and principal singer-songwriter--wanted one thing understood. This was to be a low-pressure, two-year commitment to tour in celebration of the group’s 25th anniversary. The band, which also features singer-songwriter-guitarist James Griffin, drummer Mike Botts and multi-instrumentalist Larry Knechtel--plus touring lead guitarist Randy Flowers--was not re-forming to make records and tour like they once did.

That agreed to, David Gates & Bread is performing selected dates in 12 U.S. cities while between legs of an extended world tour. The trek began in the fall in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa and moves later this year into Southeast Asia and Europe.

At 21, Gates was itching to leave college back in ’62 to make a name for himself as a musician. So he struck a deal with his father, musical director of Tulsa’s public school system. He had two years to make something of himself in the music business, or he’d return to his studies as a music major at the University of Oklahoma.

Gates packed his wife, Jo Rita, and two small children into a beat-up, 10-year-old Cadillac and drove to Los Angeles. Before long he was a string arranger and pop songwriter, and he got his first big break by writing the Murmaids’ 1963 hit song, “Popsicles and Icicles.”

Gates also composed and/or arranged songs for the Monkees, Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Connie Stevens and Shelley Fabares. But it was a growing desire to sing his own songs that lead him in 1969 to form Bread, which was originally a trio consisting of Gates, Griffin and vocalist-guitarist Robb Royer.

A year later, the band crashed the pop charts with its first No. 1 single, “Make It With You.”

Bread’s smooth, mellow love songs and ballads, which subsequently included “If,” “It Don’t Matter to Me,” “Baby I’m-A Want You,” “Diary,” “Aubrey,” “Guitar Man” and “Everything I Own,” among others, were radio staples in their heyday, charting 11 Top 40 hits between 1970 and 1974.

Their hits still can be heard today on classic rock and adult-contemporary radio stations, and so far this summer, the group’s been consistently filling 2,000-seat concert halls.

What’s behind the enduring appeal? Gates believes that “each tune’s sing-a-long structure” keeps Bread’s catalog from gathering mold. Or simply put, it’s those darn catchy hooks.

“The quality song survives because the melody and chorus . . . make you want to hear it repeatedly without getting tired of it,” explains Gates, 57, who wrote all of the band’s Top 10 hits. “Timeless songs are those that are hummable without wearing your ear out.”

Yet by 1974, Gates broke up the band because Bread was “unable to match the quality of songs we’d had on our first five albums.” (The foursome did reunite for one more album, 1977’s “Lost Without Your Love,” and its supporting tour.)

“We just couldn’t write anything that was worthy of the ‘Bread’ name, so instead of tarnishing our reputation, I felt it was time to call it a day,” said Gates, who lists Sting, Bonnie Raitt, Sophie B. Hawkins, Clint Black and the Wallflowers’ Jakob Dylan as being among today’s top songwriters. “It’s always meant a lot to me to write good songs and have them recognized by my peers as well as the public.”

Gates does have a personal favorite of the group’s hits. Because the romantic “If” has been covered so many times and played at countless weddings, Gates considers it to be his best song. He’s heard it in the oddest of places.

“I was standing in the men’s restroom at this rodeo one time, and the guy in the urinal next me was whistling ‘If,’ ” Gates recalled with a chuckle. “I didn’t say anything, but I thought, ‘Well, I guess I’ve made it.’ ”

“Success is not about money. To realize that something you’ve done is known and enjoyed by so many people . . . boy, that’s the ultimate reward.”

* David Gates & Bread perform Friday night at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. Livingston Taylor opens. 8 p.m. $34-$50. (714) 556-2121.
