SCENES THAT INSPIRED 1,000 PAINTINGS

Endless possibilities are what the coasts of France, Spain and Portugal have always been about. Of course, the best European cruises also dock in timeless cities like Barcelona, Cherbourg, Lisbon and beyond.

French Riviera Botanical Garden

CITY OF LOVE, CÔTE D'AZUR

The only thing better than strolling into Paris as the Eiffel Tower lights up at night? Sitting down for a meal of fresh-caught seafood as the sun sets into the harbor of aptly-named Nice. France has got something for every traveler, which is why so many cruises to Europe dock here.

Spain Barcelona Sagrada Familia

SAY "SALUD" TO SPAIN

Sitting down for Spanish tapas is one of the most satisfying food experiences in the world, especially when you wash it down with fruity sangria. Plus, the Jurassic topography of the Canary Islands and the storied streets of Barcelona are just a few of the best places to visit in Europe you'll find here.

Lisbon, Portugal, Pena National Palace

Europe is beautiful in every season, but the peak of comfortable weather (especially in the north) is between May and September.

You should always be prepared for rain and colder weather when you travel to Europe, especially in the North. Dress in light layers for your vacation.

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests at capacity, 3,172 guests at maximum occupancy and 1.048 crew members. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Viking Saturn

Debuted in May 2023, the adults-only Viking Saturn has the capacity to hold 930 passengers and 465 crew members. Travelers love the ship's clean Scandinavian design and compact size, which allows it to dock in smaller ports that larger cruise ships cannot reach.

On board, travelers have access to a slew of amenities, including a fitness center, a spa, a library, a state-of-the-art theater, a hair salon, an infinity pool and more. A resident historian is also on board to offer lectures and educational programming about upcoming port destinations. When hunger strikes, Viking Saturn offers an array of dining options, from fresh seafood at World Café to afternoon tea service at Wintergarden to traditional Norwegian cuisine at Mamsen's. Or, learn how to prepare regional dishes from your itinerary at the onboard cooking school.

Starting at 270 square feet, standard staterooms come equipped with king-size mattresses (which can be converted into two twin beds), flat-screen TVs, full-size verandas and bathrooms with heated floors. What's more, each accommodation includes 24-hour room service. Travelers who opt to stay in one of the ship's upgraded suites (which reach up to 1,448 square feet) have access to additional perks such as separate living areas and dining rooms, complimentary laundry services and a welcome bottle of Champagne, among other luxuries.

Viking Saturn sails to a variety of destinations in northern Europe (such as Bergen, Norway; London  and Stockholm ) and the Mediterranean (think: Barcelona, Spain ; Rome ; Athens, Greece ; and Istanbul ).

Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger, 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet).

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater.

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Few places in the world pack in as much culture per square meter as Europe does… and nobody packs fun into Europe like Carnival does! There’s so much variety across the continent and its islands, and with Carnival you have options for experiencing many of these places by sea. Top Northern Europe FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Northern Europe?

Northern Europe is enchanting at any time of year, but May to September is the best period. You’ll enjoy long, bright days and almost 24 hours of daylight in June. Summer for the locals is a time of festivals, exploring the countryside, and enjoying al-fresco dining.

How long are typical itineraries?

Our Northern Europe itineraries vary from seven to 14 nights, with a vast range of choices, whether you’re looking for a week in the Norwegian fjords or a longer itinerary that explores the capitals of the Baltic. You can even sail from Southampton, England deep into the Arctic Circle, to Norway’s Nordkapp.

Are there any specific visa requirements for cruising to countries in Northern Europe?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

The vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

What kind of weather can be expected during a Northern Europe cruise?

You can expect all kinds of summer weather, from bright sunshine to occasional mist, rain, and drizzle. Evenings can be cool. Come prepared for all eventualities, with light layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy shoes.

What types of excursions are available?

We offer excursions for a range of interests, from guided hikes to scenic boat rides, in-depth visits to castles and museums, and immersive explorations of local food and drink. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, an individual, a family, or a group of friends, you’ll find a fantastic range of cultural and experiential activities in every port.

Are there any cultural or language tips I should know before cruising to Northern Europe?

On your travels in Northern Europe, you will experience a number of different cultures, currencies, cuisines, and languages. It’s important, and fun, to acknowledge these differences and learn a little about the historical events that have shaped each destination. English is widely spoken in Scandinavian countries, especially in the service industry, although it’s always appreciated if you learn a few words of the local language.

Prepare to encounter a number of different currencies on your travels; Finland, Estonia, and the Republic of Ireland use the Euro, but other countries have their own currencies. U.S. dollars are not necessarily accepted, although credit cards are widely used, and there are plenty of ATMs.

The Best Europe Cruises for 2021 and Beyond

If you want to see the Northern Lights in Norway, Seabourn’s wintertime Norway cruises are your best bet.

After a pandemic year without any European cruises available to Americans, sailing options are returning for the summer 2021 season. Cruise lines are testing the waters with a limited number of ships and new health and safety protocols in place with most cruises restricted to passengers who have been vaccinated.

There are benefits to being first in line postpandemic. Ships will sail at reduced capacity and popular attractions are unlikely to be crowded. You may find you have a museum or café practically to yourself. As restrictions ease, the traffic is bound to pick up in 2022, which already is looking like a year when ships will sail full due to pent-up demand.

Here are our picks for cruises this summer and beyond.

Norway: Seabourn wintertime cruise

Seeing the Northern Lights is practically guaranteed on Seabourn’s new wintertime Norway itineraries debuting in December. The 12- to 14-day sailings also introduce the line’s first purpose-built, polar-class expedition yacht, the 264-passenger Seabourn Venture , equipped with two custom, six-seat submarines, two dozen Zodiacs, and expedition kayaks for intimate exploration of Norway’s winter landscape. Excursions, which include the opportunity to camp on land overnight for optimal Northern Lights viewing, are led by a 26-person expedition team. Alternatively, you may opt to just stay cozy in your fancy suite and get a wake-up call should the lights appear. Most departures are from Tromsø, Norway, or Copenhagen, with fares for 12-night sailings starting from $10,999 per person.

Greece: A crusie with Seabourn, Silversea, Ponant, Windstar, or Variety Cruises

With its historic sites, whitewashed towns, the popular beaches of Mykonos, and views galore in the cliffside towns of Santorini, Greece opened its doors to international travelers in May. Nearly a dozen cruise lines are returning to the Aegean this summer and fall so there are ample options for those seeking to sail the Greek isles.

Ultraluxury lines such as Seabourn and Silversea are in the mix for summer 2021, along with boutique lines such as France-based Ponant and Windstar , with its 148-passenger, four-masted Wind Star sailing ship.

Or explore for a week on Greek-owned Variety Cruises ’ 157-foot, 49-passenger sailing yacht Galileo , going beyond the norm to lesser-known Cycladic and Dodecanese islands such as Levitha, where a summertime restaurant for sailors is run by the one family who lives on the island.

When Viking Ocean Cruises returns to cruising this summer, it will have three ships sailing from Valletta on Malta to Greece, Italy, and Spain. Our pick is Viking’s 10-night Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise, roundtrip from Valletta. The ship gets you to Kotor, Montenegro (you’ll want to be on deck as you sail through a river valley surrounded by peaks); the fairy-tale-like Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia; the Croatian city of Split with its 4th-century Roman palace; and Gozo, Malta, where according to legend giants built the prehistoric palace, which predates Stonehenge. There’s also opportunity in Croatia and Malta to see filming locations for HBO’s Game of Thrones . Sail on the 930-passenger Viking Venus , a new ship from Viking. Fares from $3,599 per person.

Basque Country: Lindblad Expeditions Lisbon to Bordeaux cruise

New from Lindblad Expeditions in April 2022 is a unique cultural exploration cruise from Lisbon to Bordeaux . The itinerary begins in Porto, Portugal, and continues through Basque country to the epicenter for French wine, Bordeaux, with a strong focus on food and drink throughout the cruise.

Spain and France: National Geographic Resolution

Sail on the new, polar-class, 126-passenger National Geographic Resolution , where you can work out in the yoga studio or linger in the infinity-style hot tubs when not on shore sipping port at the wine cellars in Porto. During the cruise, you will have the opportunity to spend a day collecting mussels with local fishermen in Galicia, Spain, visit Bilbao’s Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim art museum, and sample tapas and sparkling wine in a French Basque fishing village. Fares from $6,870 per person.

River cruises return this summer , with Viking, Uniworld, Scenic, and AmaWaterways among the lines relaunching ships—although not their whole fleets—on rivers that include Portugal’s Douro, France’s Seine and Rhône, and the multi-country Rhine and Danube. A great way to sail the Danube is on AmaWaterways ’ impressive, double-wide, 196-passenger AmaMagna , traveling between Budapest and Vilshofen, Germany, stopping in Bratislava, Slovakia, and with an overnight in Vienna. Sip the local gruner veltliner and riesling in Wachau Valley or dance like you are in The Sound of Music in Salzburg. Back on the ship, check out in wellness classes on the spacious roof deck or dining in onboard restaurants that include a fancy Chef’s Table venue (where you might score a taste of Siberian caviar) and a wine bar. Seven-night cruise from $3,099 per person.

Iceland: Crystal Cruises’ new Crystal Endeavor

The land of fire and ice is open for cruising this summer, and several lines will be exploring the coast, bringing guests to lava fields, gigantic waterfalls, seabird colonies, and other striking landscapes under the Midnight Sun. Luxury line Crystal Cruises is debuting its new 200-passenger, polar-class Crystal Endeavor , equipped with two six-passenger helicopters, a six-passenger submarine and the only casino on an expedition ship, on 10-night sailings (fares from $16,499 per person). Circumnavigating Iceland from Reykjavík, the itinerary includes stops on the mainland and islands including Grimsey Island, above the Arctic Circle, where you might catch sight of rare little auks with their black and white plumage.

The 1,750-passenger Disney Magic will sail in Europe spring and summer 2022, with several sailings stopping in Italy. A six-night departure from Barcelona to Rome on June 4, 2022 (fares for a family of four sharing a cabin start at $6,732 per person), gets you to Genoa, which is key. Scenes from the movie, a 1950s coming-of-age story, are inspired by the area southeast of Genoa. An Ultimate Italian Riviera shore excursion ($159 per person) takes you to the town of Camogli and other sites that will look familiar to Luca fans. Disney is being mum about any possible movie-related character appearances and experiences.

All-Europe: Silversea’s Grand Europe cruise

If you are uneasy about returning to Europe this year, consider making up for lost time in one fell swoop. Ultraluxury line Silversea has assigned its 596-passenger Silver Moon to a Grand Europe itinerary embarking Athens on March 30, 2022, and hitting basically all major water-accessible attractions—72 ports of call in 22 countries in total—on a three-month itinerary that ends in Stockholm. Can’t be away that long? You can alternatively book a 37-night segment to visit 33 places in the Mediterranean, or a 53-night segment that will get you from Lisbon to Stockholm, including the British Isles, Scandinavia, and Russia. Fares for the whole shebang from $57,060 per person.

British Isles and Ireland: Hurtigruten

Norwegian line Hurtigruten explores remote parts of the British Isles on a 12-night itinerary (from $6,741 per person) next spring and summer, with the recently updated 532-passenger Maud. Sailing roundtrip from Dover, United Kingdom, passengers will visit places known for Neolithic sites, bird colonies, whiskey, and woolens. Among the destinations are Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland, with easy access to the basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway, and Scotland’s Inner and Outer Hebrides, including the rocky and wild St. Kilda archipelago, home to the second-largest gannet colony in the world. Plan to sip on Islay Island, Scotland, home to nine distilleries, and have an opportunity to purchase crystal in Waterford, Ireland. For those looking to reduce their footprint as they return to travel, it’s worth noting that the ship was recently reconfigured to run partially on biofuel and lower emissions.

Traveling with kids to Europe? Why including a cruise might be better than just staying on land

Summer Hull

You may associate the word "cruising" with short jaunts to the Bahamas or Mexico. On those cruises, a lot of the experience is about the onboard fun, and some passengers never even leave the boat.

But if those typical short cruises out of Florida aren't necessarily your kind of thing and you are planning a trip with kids, there's a very different type of experience available in Europe that is worth considering.

I've been traveling to Europe with kids from when they were crawling to now, with one on the cusp of high school. On those trips, we've stayed in traditional hotels, apartments and even in a dome above the Arctic Circle . While all of the trips were magical in their own ways, our most recent almost-two-week European trip included five nights on a cruise, and this may now be my favorite way to experience Europe with kids.

Here's why cruising to Europe with kids during your European vacation might be an even better trip than staying in hotels on dry land.

Occupancy limits

First and perhaps most importantly, booking traditional hotels might frustrate you quite quickly when you're in Europe with a family.

Most of the time, you'll find that standard hotel rooms have an occupancy limit of two people per room — three if you're really lucky. Outside of some airport hotels and pricier family-specific rooms, you'll almost never be able to sleep four to a room in Europe due to occupancy limits.

So, for example, if you have a family of four, you'll often have to book two rooms — and whether you're paying with cash or points, that adds up quickly. (You can inquire about family plan rooms where the second room is at a discount, but even that can be hit and miss.)

If you choose the apartment or home rental route, there are other issues to consider, such as evolving laws and sentiments related to using vacation rental companies such as Airbnb, which residents often feel contribute to local housing crises.

However, if you opt instead to sleep aboard a cruise ship in Europe, you can easily find rooms built for four or even five. For example, we recently sailed in Europe on Disney Dream and it has standard cabins bookable for up to five people.

Familiar foods when you want them

While eating and experiencing different kinds of cuisine is a big, fun part of exploring Europe for adults, that may not be the case for children. Not every kid is ready to scour a new menu, in potentially another language, for each and every meal.

When we travel, it can be tough to keep one of my kids fed since she struggles with eating unfamiliar food (though not for lack of trying). So, a cruise is a great option for our family. We can go ashore for a local lunch and then return to the ship at night for some easy comfort food.

For example, a few culinary highlights (for me) on our trip included lunch on a Tuscan farm featuring cheese, truffle honey and oil-dipped bread, and a paella in Barcelona.

As excited as I was about those dishes, my 8-year-old was equally thrilled to see some familiar favorites back on board. In other words, it was a win for all involved.

See a lot without working hard for it

Traveling through Europe with kids is amazing, but it's also work. There's packing up, dealing with checking in and out, making sure you didn't forget that charger or stuffed animal, hauling everyone's bags to the train station or airport, unpacking, restocking the fridge, and on and on — all of that can get old quickly.

Conversely, if you are cruising Europe with kids (at least for a portion of your trip), there will be no packing or unpacking to deal with during that part of your journey. Simply drift away to sleep at night after sailing out of, say, Barcelona and wake up in Livorno, Italy, just a short drive from Pisa, while leaving the "work" of getting there to the ship. You get somewhere new to explore virtually every day without worrying about the logistics of getting there.

cruises that go through europe

Not only do you have the option of some of the larger ships on lines such as Royal Caribbean and Disney available in Europe, but there are even some river cruises that are family-friendly, such as the Adventures by Disney river cruises, which opens up all kinds of additional ports and destinations.

By sailing from port to port, you can get a taste of an area without committing to multiple days there. The worst-case scenario with less time in each destination means that you may fall in love with a place and want more time. But then, you can always plan another trip there in the future.

All that said, it is worth noting that when you cruise in the Mediterranean, some of the frequently used ports are quite a distance from the major cities you'll likely want to experience. For example, the port used to visit Rome, Civitavecchia, is about an 80-minute bus ride from the Eternal City itself. The considerable distance between the port and Rome can lead to early mornings, long days and tired kids. In our case, we used our time on the bus to take some power naps and keep everyone happy.

Something for everyone

In my opinion, if you're going to Europe, you should do things that you can only do in Europe. That might mean walking through the Roman Forum, seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa or dancing under the Eiffel Tower in Paris. And often, if you are traveling as a family, you will be doing those things as a family.

cruises that go through europe

However, there may be times when some family members don't want to do things at the same time as everyone else for days on end.

Maybe you want to enjoy some jazzy piano tunes and a quiet drink at a bar while your tween wants to play basketball with their friends and your partner wants to go for a swim. After returning from a day out and about onshore, everyone can return to the ship in the evening to do exactly what they want to do when they want to.

A little time (slightly) apart can be a fantastic way to reset so you're ready to enjoy more experiences together the next day.

Cool off easily

A lot of Europe is quite warm in the summer — hot, actually. When we visited Rome in mid-July, temperatures clocked in at 100 degrees, and it felt even hotter than that.

In much of Europe, widespread air conditioning and swimming pools are few and far between, so it can be tough to cool off between adventures. However, if you stay on a large cruise ship, you will have access to not only some pretty great air conditioning (which means a whole lot, especially in southern Europe) but also pools, waterslides and plenty of ways to cool off.

Readily available 'easy button'

Just before boarding our most recent cruise, the kids needed something familiar for dinner on our fourth night in Barcelona. So, since I had spotted a global pizza chain across the road from our hotel that night, I fired up Google Translate, went online and ordered some pizza. It wasn't fancy, but I hoped it would be easy and affordable.

When I walked across the street to pick the order up, there was no pizza. There was no record of the order despite my email confirmation number. My Spanish and their English weren't meeting in the middle enough for anyone to understand the problem — or solve it. Magically, after an hour or so of confusion and two trips into the store, my order eventually appeared, but it's a good example of how sometimes the "easy button" can be hard to find abroad when you're doing it yourself.

On the ship, when we wanted a pizza after a long day exploring Rome, we simply walked up to the top deck and got it.

While each ship is different, some other amenities of a large ship that may make your life easier include a way to do laundry, really good air conditioning waiting for you, onboard medical assistance if someone in the group is unwell, and easily accessible staff members that speak your language in case you have questions or are in need of recommendations.

You may not need those conveniences, but knowing they are there can take away some of those stresses you may have in the back of your mind.

Combine time at sea with time on land

Of course, if you do head to Europe for a family cruise, then you might as well go a little deeper and at least explore the city you're departing from. If you have time, you can even tack on more time in the city that your cruise will end in, too. That means you can get the best of all worlds: You can enjoy all the conveniences and made-for-kids entertainment available on the ship and have time to really explore Europe on your own, too.

For us, that meant spending more time in Barcelona at the beginning of our cruise. We had plenty of time to walk the Gothic streets; shop; feast on Iberian ham, paella and gelato; enjoy an evening stroll in Park Guell; and, of course, visit the Sagrada Familia, among other things.

cruises that go through europe

After the cruise disembarked in Barcelona, we took a train to Paris and spent several nights exploring there, too.

cruises that go through europe

In both of those locations, we were often shelling out for multiple rooms each night, grateful for the easy days in the middle of the trip that we'd spent on the ship and — every now and then — really missing the familiar food waiting on the ship and the fun (and friends) readily available in the kids and teens clubs.

cruises that go through europe

Pro tip: Some European cruises start in one port and end in another, which is an even easier way to make the most of your time in two different cities.

Bottom line

If you're nervous about navigating Europe with kids , first know that it is absolutely doable. But having tried multiple methods, I would highly recommend considering a cruise as an easy introduction to Europe.

You can visit various cities, see impressive sights and do it all with the familiar home base of your cruise ship waiting for you each night. Or, do what we did and combine some days on your own, exploring by land, and some days aboard a cruise with a captain at the wheel. That way, you can see more places than you otherwise would, and everyone can take a bit of a break and wake up in a new port to have as busy or lazy of a day as their heart desires.

As for my family, I now have my eye on a Northern Europe cruise, where we could perhaps experience places like Ireland, Norway, Iceland or even Greenland — it's an experience that would be tough to replicate solely traveling by land and air.

Cruising through Europe with my mother

Brekke Fletcher

Aug 13, 2024 • 8 min read

Brekke Fletcher and her mother aboard the Silver Whisper.

Brekke Fletcher and her mother aboard the Silver Whisper, sailing from Croatia to Italy. Brekke Fletcher/Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet’s Senior Director of Content recently returned from an 11-day cruise through the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas. Here she shares some highlights from the trip, and some advice for traveling with an older parent.

For as long as I can remember, my 83 year-old mom has wanted to see Positano , Italy . She’s not alone, mind you; this picturesque spot on the Amalfi Coast has drawn everyone from Goethe to John Steinbeck to Jacqueline and Aristotle Onassis – its bona fides and popularity are undeniable.

I’ve been wracking my brain for years about how to get her there, if only for an afternoon, but the idea made my head hurt. Then I came across a Silversea cruise through Europe that stopped in Sorrento  (a short drive to Positano), and I threw caution to the wind (despite my many misgivings about the crowds and heat we’d encounter). We booked it in May, and we were ready to embark from Rome at the end of June.

Even before we confirmed, I thought about all the logistics to manage for us: traveling with an older parent means you’re doing the work, sorting flights , packing lists , excursions and reservations. It wasn’t always easy, but we both got what we wanted: an incredible experience spending time and traveling together.

Before I get into what we did and what I learned, here's a quick digest of details that I hope help you plan a similar trip:

  • When to arrive: Give yourself at least one full day before your cruise leaves to ensure you make it. I arrived two days prior so I could have a day in Rome all on my lonesome.
  • How to get from the airport: Take the train if you’re mobile and strong enough to handle yourself and your baggage. Mom, on the other hand, was arriving from the West Coast with an 8-hour layover. I arranged a car and driver for her in advance.
  • Getting around town: I walked everywhere, but the public transportation is pretty great in Rome. My mom, however, needed to take taxis.
  • Where to stay: You can stay near the cruise port (it’s in Citavettia, about 90 minutes from the city center). Since I had two nights in Rome, I stayed at Hotel Locarno , near Piazza del Popolo. It’s beautifully designed, with an outdoor garden where we took breakfast and a rooftop bar and restaurant where we ate dinner.
  • What to pack : I hewed pretty closely to this list . It was the peak heat of summer , so I brought lots of sunscreen, a hat, comfortable walking shoes and a lot of light linen clothes.

TunisCruise.jpg

What cruise did you take? Where did it stop?

The 11-night cruise aboard a  Silversea Cruises  ship, the Silver Whisper . We embarked from Citivecchia in Rome and visited the following ports:  Sorrento (and the Amalfi Coast); Trapani in Sicily ; Tunis , Tunisia ; Valletta , Malta ; Monopoli, Italy; Kotor , Montenegro ; and Korčula , Šibenik and Rovinj in Croatia . We disembarked in Venice and flew home from there.

This was my second Silversea cruise, so I when I booked with only a month to spare, I did it knowing that the caliber of care and the small ship size would be ideal for my mom. Silversea is a small luxury line known for its polished service (every suite has a butler and attendant); all-inclusive meals and drinks from four different restaurants; a bar that also serves coffee and snacks all day; room service (the food is really good, and not just "for a cruise"); specialized excursions (some included, some not) and on-board entertainment (a nightly show, live music, games). We stayed in a Classic Veranda Suite, which is the second-level option.

PositanoCruise.jpg

What was the most touristy thing you did?

Our day trip along the Amalfi coast was  exactly what I expected . It was, putting it mildly, a challenge. That said, this was the entire reason for the trip, so we selected a special add-on excursion that would bring us by minibus to Positano.

Our 9am Friday excursion took us by tender to the port in Sorrento , where we met our guide and driver for the surprisingly short – but extraordinarily beautiful – 40-minute drive to Positano . The early hour meant the traffic was not terrible , and we were walking around the picturesque town within an hour.

What we encountered upon arrival was precisely what I had feared: crowds and heat at 10am. My mom walks with a cane, so the vertical nature of this gorgeous seaside town with its uneven, steep and slippery stone paths and sets of stairs without banisters, meant we had to take it very slow and stop a lot to find some shade to rest.

When I say I nearly killed 50 tourists who I believed were intentionally trying to knock my mother to the ground during our chaotic descent... well, you understand. The sheer number of humans packing into this tiny enclave each summer makes enjoying Positano (and the Amalfi Coast) a challenge for anyone, and even more so for those who have mobility challenges. But after an hour or so, we made it to the beach, and for a moment, the throngs seemed to dissipate.

Our excursion included a lunch at a luxury hotel, so we dined at Il Covo dei Saraceni , located just above the north end of the beach. Here, we could quietly and calmly enjoy the glorious view of the water, artistically arrayed with bobbing yachts and the colorful buildings that populate the entire vertical rock face. It was picture-perfect when viewed from a comfortably removed setting.

This lunch was just what my mother had dreamed. The meal was a delight. Prosecco, perfectly ripe tomatoes, mozzarella, pasta – it was all precisely what one would wish.  We left Positano sated and happy – the throngs pouring off ferries and further crowding the walkways, and an even hotter uphill climb notwithstanding!

The material point: my  mother was absolutely overjoyed by the whole experience, even with all the annoyances. Her dream came true. And we never have to do it again.

The handiest thing you packed?

It had to be the J. Crew wide brim raffia hat . I bought it a day before I left – in that weird panicky moment I always experience before I go on a big trip – assuming I would get  some  use out of it. I wore it every single day. This hat is actually packable, too, unlike the many I've flattened in suitcases that never regain their original shape.

IMG4299.jpeg

Your favorite port?

Korčula , Croatia. We didn't have an agenda, but the minute we boarded our tender to the island, I knew this is the place I must return. The pluses and minuses of cruise travel are two sides of the same coin: 1) You're able to see so many different destinations on one trip. 2) You're never anywhere long enough to really immerse yourself in it.

But if you're a "glass is half-full" kind of person, the downside means you're immediately making plans to return to a place you may never have known about (and I did not know about Korčula) to spend more time and immerse yourself in a more meaningful way.

For our day we just wandered the perimeter and labyrinthine streets of their old town. I couldn't take a bad photo. Everywhere I looked the picture I didn't know I needed to take just presented itself. I'm sure like all beautiful spots in the Adriatic, it can be crowded in summer, and full of tourists., but on this day I didn't feel that at all. It was even quiet.

We had lunch at Filippi , along the tree-canopied waterfront walk on the eastern edge of town. We sat in the shade and watched the people pass and the water glint. It's fitting that I found Korčula to be such a winning discovery, it is, after all, the birthplace of Marco Polo.

Monopoli2.jpg

The best meal?

In Monopoli, Italy, I reserved lunch for us at the delightful  Locanda sul Porto , just west of the harbor. They have a beautiful covered patio, though we ate indoors by an open French window. I ordered an Aperol spritz. We had fresh oysters and seafood pasta and finished with a delicious chocolatey dessert. The waitstaff were attentive and so helpful – we were all smiles. And even though it was a random Wednesday, and we arrived right when they opened,  it was packed with locals.

Best tip for someone who wants to take the same trip?

LaDame.jpg

On Silversea, and specifically on the Whisper , it is imperative to book your desired restaurants, spa treatments and excursions in advance. We were so late to booking the entire trip, I didn't think about booking the individual restaurants (on board, all but one require booking in advance) until the options were few. Many of the included port excursions were already full, and I never did get the massage I'd hoped for. And on shore, I made a few plans, but ultimately I should have booked more lunches and dinners so we could relax over a good meal while on dry land.

We were never unhappy, mind you. The Restaurant (which is the name of the one you don't need to pre-book) had different specials every night, so it didn't feel overly repetitive. And those specials were evocative of the port, which was a nice touch. We also loved ordering room service, particularly their enormous burger and sweet potato fries.

My favorite meal on the ship, though, was at La Dame, the fine dining French restaurant. It's an additional supplement, but so completely worth it. The sole menieure  (fish in a lemony butter sauce with parsley) was as good as any I've ever had (including in France ). And don't get me started on the caviar service, with its attendant bits of egg and shallot, crème fraîche and soft, pillowy blinis. I still swoon over those tiny spoons.

Booking A Cruise Could Save You Money On European Travel

I f you've ever wanted to travel to Caribbean destinations , there's a good chance you've considered going on a cruise. If you've ever thought of traveling through Europe, however, it's likely that you've solely planned your trip around trains, planes, and automobiles . What many travelers don't realize is that traveling throughout Europe via cruise is not only an exciting way to see the continent and its many countries, but it's also a great money-saving tactic, as well.

Thanks to Europe's several rivers and waterways, as well as its many coastal towns and cities, cruising throughout the continent is easy and efficient. Cruising is a great option to see several destinations in a short period of time, especially in Mediterranean locales, such as choosing from the many Greek Islands or Sardinia. With hotels and airfares at an all-time high, it's time to consider other options when it comes to traveling throughout Europe.

Compare Prices Of Flights, Trains, And Hotels

People primarily book cruises for a few reasons. Firstly, cruises are a great way to pay a fixed price without having to worry about any of the planning. Better yet, not only do you not have to plan, but you can see several destinations and not have to worry about figuring out the logistics of flights, trains, and even hotels.

Europe, which is already a generally expensive continent (note that in Eastern Europe, traveling on a budget is not as difficult as it is in Western Europe), has seen a significant increase in hotel rates, similar to the rest of the world. According to Money.com , hotels are up by a staggering 54% more than they were pre-pandemic. Another study by USAToday says that cruises, however, are down by 5% from rates pre-pandemic. It's a no-brainer that cruises are going to save you money with the rate of inflation in the current world while travel companies still work vigilantly to recover from lost profit during COVID-19.

So, if you want to travel but you're trying to save, paying a fixed price for a cruise just might be the way to go.

Potential European Cruise Itineraries

So, where exactly can a cruise in Europe go? The options are surprisingly endless. Landlocked nations such as Hungary aren't even off limits, thanks to companies like Viking Cruises offering Budapest as a stop. If you want to take a ride around the South of France and further onward to the island nation of Malta, MSC Cruises offers an itinerary on their MSC World Europa cruise option for as low as $499/person.

Interested in seeing some Norwegian fjords?  Celebrity Cruises offers some steals on cruising through Norway, which is typically an expensive destination to travel to. If you want to travel through Portugal's coastal seaside from the comfort of a cruise without breaking the bank, you can book a Viking River Cruise with just a $25 deposit.

CroisiEurope Cruises offers cruise options specifically through French canals or even through the Italian Riviera all the way down to the Amalfi Coast. In sum, traveling throughout Europe doesn't have to be done in a conventional way, and taking a cruise, especially in the off-season, is a surefire way to make even some of the most expensive destinations, like France and Italy possible on a budget.

Firefighters Battle ‘Extremely Dangerous’ Wildfire Near Athens

The blaze broke out in a town near the Greek capital on Sunday, damaging buildings and prompting evacuations. Strong winds have helped the fire spread.

Hundreds of firefighters in Greece were battling a major wildfire on Monday that broke out near Athens a day earlier and has raced through parched forest, destroying properties and prompting evacuation orders, according to the authorities.

The fire started on Sunday afternoon in Varnavas, a town less than 30 miles north of Athens by road, and spread rapidly within minutes because of high winds, Greece’s national fire service said. In some places, the flames were more than 80 feet tall. A spokesman for the fire service, Vassilios Vathrakogiannis, said that despite “superhuman efforts” to contain the fire overnight, it had spread “like lightning.”

The “extremely dangerous” fire was still burning Monday on two major fronts, according to Greece’s civil protection minister, Vassilis Kikilias: in Grammatiko, northeast of Athens, and Kallitechnoupoli, to the east of Athens. He added that strong winds and a protracted drought had created “dramatic conditions” for the more than 600 firefighters working to douse the flames.

Two women embraced in Varnavas after being rescued on Sunday.

The blaze is one of the worst to threaten Athens, the capital, this year in what has been a busy fire season for the country, in part because of a dry winter and an exceptionally hot summer .

Greece’s civil protection authority placed several areas, including Athens, at “ extreme fire risk ” — the highest level of risk in the country’s five-tier system — for Monday.

Fire reached Vrilissia, an affluent suburb north of Athens. Television footage showed thick smoke there and at least one person spraying water from the roof of a house in an attempt to extinguish the flames.

Greece appealed to European partners for help and is expecting aircraft from France and Italy, as well as 75 firefighters and 25 vehicles from the Czech Republic, the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry said in a statement .

Firefighters tried to extinguish flames in Dionysos, north of Athens, on Monday.

The authorities have ordered at least a dozen communities to evacuate, and television footage on Sunday showed motorists fleeing as flames lined the road near Varnavas. A children’s hospital, a military hospital and two monasteries were also evacuated. Greece’s Olympic sports complex, north of Athens, was opened overnight to house residents who had to abandon their homes.

There were no reports of casualties, though at least one firefighter experienced burns and several people were given first aid for breathing problems, a spokesman for the fire service said.

The full extent of the damage to forestland and homes was not immediately clear.
