Journey Into Mystery #1 – 125 + 503 – 655 (1952-1966 + 1996-2013) : Journey into Mystery is an American comic book series initially published by Atlas Comics, then by its successor, Marvel Comics. Initially a horror comics anthology, it segued to giant-monster and science fiction stories in the late 1950s. Beginning with issue #83 (cover dated August 1962), it ran the superhero feature “The Mighty Thor”, created by writers Stan Lee and Larry Lieber and artist Jack Kirby, and inspired by the mythological Norse thunder god. The series, which was renamed for its superhero star with issue #126 (March 1966), has been revived three times: in the 1970s as a horror anthology, and in the 1990s and 2010s with characters from Marvel’s Thor mythos.

LOKI EPISODE 5 SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN EPISODE 5 DO NOT READ THIS

Journey Into Mystery isn’t just the name of Loki episode 5 – it’s also the name of some pretty famous Marvel comics, which encompass several of the variants we saw today!

What Is Journey Into Mystery?

Journey Into Mystery started out as a horror/fantasy anthology by Marvel’s predecessor – Atlas Comics – in the 1950’s. But, in August 1962, Marvel Comics released issue 83, which introduced Thor as a main character.

The series proved so popular, it ended up with it’s on spin off called Tales Of Asgard, and the title changed from ‘Journey Into Mystery’ to ‘Journey Into Mystery With The Mighty Thor’ to simply ‘The Mighty Thor.’

Journey Into Mystery as a title was then dropped until the 70’s, when Marvel relaunched it as a horror anthology again. It ran for three years, before being dropped for the second time.

After the original ‘Heroes Reborn’ event in the 90’s, Thor was back in comics titled ‘Journey Into Mystery’ until 1998.

Journey Into Mystery was then brought back again in the early 2010’s, this time featuring Loki, who had been reincarnated as a child after the Siege event (guide coming in the next few weeks). This series also tied into the Fear Itself event, focusing on Loki’s side of the action. The series garnered praised from fans and critics alike, and ends with a letter from Tom Hiddleston himself, who praised writer Kieron Gillen on his take on Loki.

The series then transformed from a Loki-focused run to a Lady Sif-focused run, which was sadly cancelled in October 2013.

The latest resurrection for Journey Into Mystery has been in 2019, where the McElroy brothers wrote a limited five issue run, which tied into the War Of The Realm s event.

Why Is It Relevant To Loki?

Loki made his first appearance in issue 85 in October 1962, where he was introduced as Thor’s evil adoptive brother. Since then, Loki has appeared multiple times in Journey Into Mystery, including, famously, the Kieron Gillen run as I mentioned above.

Which Loki’s Are Involved?

Classic Loki (Richard E Grant’s character) is the original to turn up, hence the name ‘classic Loki’, and yes, he does genuinely look like that! The character has been changed up a little for the TV show, as the comic version is truly evil, instead of morally grey.

There’s also kid Loki, who is essentially a reincarnated Loki, trying to do good after so many years of bad. Also, in his run, he is actually semi-responsible for Thor’s death, in the sense that he helps the prophecy along, so the brother’s can save Asgard and Earth from destruction. So, really, his line in the TV show is comic accurate, he did kill Thor in the comics!

Do I Have To Read Anything Else To Read These?

In short, yes, but it depends on which Loki you want to read about as to how much you’ll have to read.

Classic Loki will be the easiest, as he turns up two issues after Thor does, so you’ll be able to find the whole story in one bind up reasonably easily.

For kid Loki, there’s a bit more to be dealing with. With him, you’ll need to read three big events: Secret Invasion, Siege and Fear Itself. Luckily for you, they’re all reasonably well contained events where you can just read the main event bind up and move on! It seems like a lot of reading, but, honestly, they’re all worth it, they’re all fantastic runs, and Siege and Fear Itself feature versions Loki heavily.

About the author

Jack Kirby (/ˈkɜːrbi/; August 28, 1917 – February 6, 1994), born Jacob Kurtzberg, was an American comic book artist, writer, and editor widely regarded as one of the medium's major innovators and one of its most prolific and influential creators.

Kirby grew up poor in New York City, and learned to draw cartoon figures by tracing characters from comic strips and editorial cartoons. He entered the nascent comics industry in the 1930s, drawing various comics features under different pen names, including Jack Curtiss, before ultimately settling on Jack Kirby. In 1940, he and writer-editor Joe Simon created the highly successful superhero character Captain America for Timely Comics, predecessor of Marvel Comics. During the 1940s, Kirby, generally teamed with Simon, created numerous characters for that company and for National Comics, later to become DC Comics.

After serving in World War II, Kirby produced work for a number of publishers, including DC, Harvey Comics, Hillman Periodicals. At Crestwood Publications he and Simon created the genre of romance comics and later founded their own short-lived comic company, Mainline Publications. Ultimately, Kirby found himself at Timely's 1950s iteration, Atlas Comics, which in the next decade became Marvel. There, in the 1960s, Kirby and writer-editor Stan Lee co-created many of the company's major characters, including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Hulk. The Lee-Kirby titles garnered high sales and critical acclaim, but in 1970, feeling he had been treated unfairly, Kirby left the company for rival DC.

At DC, Kirby created his Fourth World saga, which spanned several comics titles. While these series proved commercially unsuccessful and were canceled, the Fourth World's New Gods have continued as a significant part of the DC Universe. Kirby returned to Marvel briefly in the mid-to-late 1970s, then ventured into television animation and independent comics. In his later years, Kirby, who has been called "the William Blake of comics", began receiving great recognition in the mainstream press for his career accomplishments, and in 1987 he was one of the three inaugural inductees of the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.

Kirby was married to Rosalind "Roz" Goldstein in 1942. They had four children, and remained married until his death from heart failure in 1994, at the age of 76. The Jack Kirby Awards and Jack Kirby Hall of Fame were named in his honor.

Journey Into Mystery went through a couple of different incarnations before the much fabled issue #83 - which brought the world the introduction of one of the most iconic of Marvel superheroes... The Mighty THOR !

Beginning in 1952 after Timely Comics had given up it's superhero titles which made them popular in 1940's, and had trasitioned to the mantle of Atlas Comics, JIM was initially a suspense/horror title.

Many creative holdovers from the Timely era contributed to the book (Carl Burgos, Bill Everett, Syd Shores), along with many future and established superstars (Russ Heath, Joe Maneely, Reed Crandall, Gray Morrow).

Later, around issue #50 or so, in the lead up to the revival of Marvel Comics, the book became a sci-fi/monster comic, and many members of the famous "bullpen," (Joe Sinnott, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Dick Ayers, Don Heck - and of course Stan Lee) gradually started finding more and more work in JIM's pages.

Finally, after the success of the re-launch of the superhero genre with the Fantastic Four , Spider-Man , etc., THOR was debuted in August of 1962 and would be the main attraction for the duration of the book's life (issue #125, February 1966).

Thor would immediately go on to have his own long-running title, but it was in Journey into Mystery that he first came into prominence, with a whole universe being created around Thor, whose earthly guise was partially lame Dr. Donald Blake, and would be established as a "God on Earth" - a popular and recurring Marvel theme - with many elements from Norse mythology being prominent, and many supporting characters being drawn from that well.

It was Journey where we first saw his mythical homeland, Asgard, encountered Loki - Thor's brother and arch nemesis - and father Odin (among many others).

And of course it wouln't be Marvel if your main character was not subject to many personal conflicts, like Don Blake's ongoing tentative relationship with nurse Jane Foster. Additionally, Thor would encounter many Earth-bound baddies, such as Radioactive Man, Lava Man, Mister Hyde, The Cobra, Grey Gargoyle, Absorbing Man... and also epic encounters with Hulk and Hercules!

The record sale was $7,100 in 2017 for a CGC VG+ 4.5 grade. The price has been ratcheting up for the last ten years with the comic selling for $672 in 2006, a valuation differential of 956%. These comic books are so rare that even the lowest-rated copy (Poor 0.5) sold in 2016 for $598. 

Why is this comic book valuable?

The top grade available for this issue is a VF+ 8.5 with no sales data on file. The single VF 8.0 below it set the top price of $5,201 in 2013. That's an impressive value for the top end considering that a FN 6.0 goes for $900 in today's market! Other grades for this issue showed flat growth, though it's important to note it has a limited market with only 21 registered copies available.

The single copy of this issue graded at VF+ 8.5 set the historical high with a sale of $460 back in 2002. The current market for lower grades is catching up to that 2002 value, suggesting potential for future sales at that high end. FN 6.0 tripled in value from $100 in 2010 to today's $300, while VG/FN 5.0 provided a net of $100 from $120 in 2012 to today's $220.

Story by Carl Wessler, who would go on to be a key writer for the Tales From the Crypt series.

There are sixteen registered copies of this book on file, and the only data available is for three sales! VG 4.0 set the top price of $300 in 2015. A year earlier in 2014, 5.5 FN- went for a lesser value of $290. In between, VG+ 4.5 sold for around $70. Given the value we've seen for other early issues in this series, it could be a great buy low opportunity in a blind market.

This issue features pencils by John Forte, best known as the key artist for the early Legion of Super-Heroes series.

A FN+ 6.5 that went for $232 in 2011 set the top price of $2,100 in 2014! That's a net of nearly $1,000 and an 800% profit! The higher grade of FN/VF 7.0 sold for $956 two years later. This could make you think the $2,100 sale was an outlier, but the market suggests otherwise. FN 6.0 rocketed from $90 in 2003 to today's value of $925 for an increase over 900% and a net close to $1,000!

Journey Into Mystery #102 sees Thor with his powers cut in half by the angry Odin. Thor initially agrees to help Zarrko conquer the 23rd century world, then turns on him and defeats him. This restores Thor’s favor with Odin, who then restores Thor’s full powers.

A NM/MT copy of this issue sold for $13,473 in 2012, then dropped when a copy was sold in 2014 for $13,100. The downward trend shows in other grades, including FN 6.0. A copy sold for $277 in 2019, down from a 2017 average of $363. You can buy a GD 2.0 for less than $100, a cost that may also decrease. 

This issue is the first time that we see the Enchantress and the executioner. Loki and Odin both conspire to end the infatuation that Thor has for Jane. The mission fails and so does the hope of an increase in values of this issue nowadays.

Do you have an FN 6.0 copy of this issue? Prices started increasing a few years ago, going from $198 in 2017 to a $285 sell in September 2019. Even the lower grade GD 2.0 prices increased recently, going from $88 in 2018 to $115 in June 2019. 

Who is stronger, Thor or the Incredible Hulk? That is the question asked in this issue by two rival fan clubs. While Thor cannot answer, the Hulk vows to take Thor down next time they meet. A rivalry like this potentially plays a part in popularity of this issue and desires to purchase a copy.

It was likely a good day for someone in 2007 when a NM+ 9.6 Journey Into Mystery #118 sold for $3,884. The value dropped and leveled off a few years later. An FN 6.0 copy is probably not a collector’s first choice, since the selling prices ranged from a low of $31 in 2007, to a high of $86 in 2018. Although no GD 2.0 sellers offered a copy recently, the GD/VG 3.0 books that sold ranged in price from a high of $45 in 2016 to the 2019 low of $38.  

This issue is the first time that we are introduced to the Destroyer, and to Odinsleep. Thor’s hammer and strength initially have no effect on the Destroyer, likely keeping readers in suspense. The series of events and hope of the Destroyer to kill Thor are not enough to keep up the value on this issue.

All-New Venom kicks off a high-stakes Marvel mystery later this year

Venom goes full gumshoe in Al Ewing’s new ongoing book, arriving in December

Renowned comic writer Al Ewing is just like us. He adores the Knives Out movies. He currently has Chappell Roan on rotation. And he’s constantly thinking about “cosmic entities battling in each other’s mindscapes.” Relatable.

But unlike us mere mortals, Ewing also spins epic comic book yarns with deeply psychological cores, as seen in Immortal Hulk , his tales in the Krakoan Age of X-Men , and his recent mind-bending run on Venom . The latter is about to come to an end(ish) with the recently launched series Venom War , which pits Eddie Brock against his son Dylan to avert what each former Venom host sees as a potential apocalypse.

But some good news for fans of Ewing: He won’t be saying goodbye to Eddie and Dylan when the (Venom) war is won. Polygon can reveal that Ewing and artist Carlos Gómez will team up for a scaled-down, earthbound continuation of the Venom story in Marvel’s new ongoing series All-New Venom . The book arrives in comic book stores in December .

Minor spoilers for Venom War ahead: When the dust settles on Eddie and Dylan’s symbiote-heavy brawl , the Venom symbiote will have a new human to call its own. Who is under the goo is a mystery Dylan will have to solve in gumshoe mode. The book will introduce four suspects — Robbie Robertson, Madame Masque, Rick Jones, and Luke Cage. And as Ewing put it in an interview with Polygon, there are plenty of reasons why any of them could be the one slinging across New York City.

Ahead of All-New Venom , Polygon talked to Ewing about the new direction, the potential for all four suspects, and why there are still plenty of ways to rewrite Venom’s rules (and looks).

Polygon: This will be your third iteration on Venom since you picked up the character. What have you learned about Venom? What’s at its core that makes you want to keep playing?

Al Ewing: All-New Venom is where I pivot from being part of a writing team to solo writing, and I am bringing in what I’ve learned. I’ve come to embrace a lot of the fun of Venom, in that Venom is just a really fun character. The character brings a certain degree of chaos with him. When I started coming out of Donny Cates’ run , me and Ram V had this clear idea of epic scope, an epic time-travel story with elements of [Michael] Moorcock in there, The Dancers at the End of Time , things like that.

But the more I wrote Venom, the more that wild fun of the character started creeping in. And as I got to know the character better, and got to know Eddie and Dylan and the symbiote as characters, I started to enjoy myself more and more.

Not that I wasn’t enjoying myself back in issue 1, but in a different way, I started to really have a lot of freewheeling fun with it, to the extent that Venom War , which — back when me and Ram were planning it — was originally going to be this great father-and-son tale. And it is still that, but it’s happening in a wrestling ring, because Venom demands some degree of craziness and wildness and fun. And I think All-New Venom is going to embrace that even more.

You have written a number of epically sized, cosmic stories, including Venom , but Venom War begins a process of scaling down, and the new book sounds even more down to (literal) Earth. Does All-New Venom feel like a welcome departure for you in terms of scope?

If people have a strong hankering for something different from me, this is that. It’s almost more like a Spider-Man-level story. It is set on Earth, very much in the normal New York City. Everywhere we go in the story is a place you could go, or at least the type of place you could go. Obviously, when we go to a warehouse… well, I do have a tendency to look up actual warehouses, and then change them just enough to pass legal. So yeah, everywhere we go in this story is a natural place you can go in New York City.

So we take a swing away from the big cosmic thing. The pendulum swings away from that and back into a much more intimate, character-based story, but also has a lot of that ground-level superhero action, where it’s less about cosmic entities battling in each other’s mindscapes, or mysterious zones beyond time, and much more on the street — slinging webs, slinging chains, doing the Venom thing. It’s almost like my return to an old-school sort of superhero comic, but with a couple of twists that we’re gonna have fun bringing in.

On paper, it sounds like we’re about to get the Venom version of a detective novel. Do you have genre touchstones that were at top of mind while you were writing the series?

A little bit. I’ve read my share of [Arthur] Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, as well as more recent things. I’m a big fan of the Knives Out films — I really enjoy what they do, how they tell the story, how they set things up. They never lie to the viewer of those films. That’s an important thing. They don’t reveal everything to begin with, but they never tell a lie. […] I think it is important that you don’t lie to the reader at any point. And I’m trying to do that as early as now, in this very interview! But I am a human being speaking with my human mouth, so please excuse me if I accidentally lie to you.

Let’s talk about the suspects. You have a soft spot for Rick Jones .

I do like Rick Jones! Has the sidekick now graduated to main hero? That is the question. [The suspects] have to work nicely as a group bouncing off each other, even if they don’t always meet. Each of them has to be a nice possibility, a group where the reader can’t point to any one of them and go, like, Oh, it’s that one . Hopefully we’ve achieved that.

It’s good writing a version of Rick that has come through a lot of stuff and out the other side. This is a much more laid-back, joke-telling, wisecracking Rick than we’re used to from me. No longer going through it… unless he’s now going through something else. Who can say…

Madame Masque is also in the mix, maybe the most ready to wield a symbiote in her day-to-day.

Madame Masque is another great suspect. She’s coming direct from the Gang War , which is where we last saw her in a Spidey context. She’s got plans. Do those plans involve commandeering a symbiote? Do they involve getting revenge on other gangs in an identity which nobody would ever suspect? The ultimate mask for Madame Masque? I couldn’t possibly comment…

Robbie Robertson is probably one of the nicer gents in Marvel continuity.

Robbie Robertson is somebody else who was touched by the big Gang War and Spidey. He’s never been tempted by power or superpowers. Has that changed after his son got so involved with the New York criminal underworld and falling in love with the Beetle ? Does Robbie want to find a way to get things under control in a way that you know he can’t as a newspaper man? Is this one of the great secret identities, like Clark Kent, a newspaper reporter — or newspaper editor, in Robbie’s case — hearing about trouble, then going out and dealing with it?

The last suspect is Luke Cage , but he’s in a precarious position — he’s the mayor of New York now.

We’ve seen heroes get symbiotes to get a little more done. And we’ve seen that Luke Cage has had trouble hitting the streets and doing what he loves to do while behind the desk of the mayor. Would this be a way to do that? Would this be a way to pull on another identity, kick the ass that he knows needs kicking, but in a capacity where he’s not dealing with it in an official capacity? He doesn’t have to answer questions that he would if he went out on the streets in his mayor outfit and did what he used to do for the community. Maybe a symbiote is the perfect cover for him. Again, who can say? I’m merely saying words. These are all just possibilities…

In writing this new book, does gooey ol’ Venom still feel elastic? Does the mystery premise tee you and Carlos up to play with the character’s form in wacky new ways?

Carlos is absolutely wonderful. He’s the ideal old-school superhero artist for this project. Every page that comes in the inbox looks just fantastic. And I am throwing [out] a lot of new Venom configurations. Part of the “all new” of this All-New Venom is that Venom doesn’t fight like we’ve seen Venom do before. I’m just now writing some pages where Venom does extremely wild shape-shifting, using the gooeyness of the symbiote.

One way the All-New Venom is different is that it has a more heroic-looking Venom. I won’t get into the visuals, I’ll just mention in passing that there is a new look for Venom. But previously, there’s been a lot of gooeyness, a lot of tendrils, a lot of, like, ooze and goop and slime and fangs and teeth. This is maybe a little bit more of a solid Venom. It gives us the advantage that we can pull off all kinds of exciting new tricks and fun new things, right from issue 1.
