The largest full-rigged sailing ship in the world

Inspired by the legendary Tall Ship, Preussen, the new Royal Clipper has the proud distinction of being the largest and only five-masted sailing ship built since her predecessor was launched at the beginning of the last century. With her complement of 42 sails, Royal Clipper is a splendid sight to behold. You might think she was an apparition from the grand age of sail, but Royal Clipper is as new as tomorrow. She boasts state-of-the-art navigation systems and all the comforts of today.

For connoisseurs of sail cruising, the 439 foot Royal Clipper offers the ultimate sea-going experience, balancing the grandeur, adventure and tradition of sailing with the superb service, amenities and accommodations of the finest modern yachts. Royal Clipper carries just 227 guests in luxurious style.

A full 18,940 square feet of open deck and three swimming pools create a wonderfully spacious and expansive outdoor environment. Find your secret hideaway on one of the hidden balconies on either side of the bow.

Climb the mast (with safety harness provided) to one of the passenger look-out "crow's-nests", thoughtfully furnished with comfortable settee, where you'll have the grandest view of all! Royal Clipper's interior spaces are just as dazzling. They include a 3-deck atrium that funnels sunlight into the elegantly-appointed dining room, where you'll enjoy deliciously prepared cuisine and a no-tie dress code.

A convenient marina platform lowers from the stern for watersports and diving. The ultimate unique Royal Clipper experience, the one-of-a-kind Captain Nemo Lounge, is the site of our spa and health club, which features underwater glass portholes!

If you’re looking for a sailing vacation ruled by the sun, moon, and tides, you’ve found it!

Island Windjammers offers six, ten, and twelve-night sailings aboard our classic clipper ship Vela, schooner Diamant, and sailing yacht Lyra! Vela hosts twenty-six guests, Diamant accommodates ten guests, while our new addition Lyra has room for eight. This is small ship cruising at its finest.

Our Island Girls are fully-crewed and feature air-conditioned cabins, private bathrooms, portholes, and all modern comforts.

Your Captain sets the course. Each day is a new adventure. Free your mind from schedules, and savor each moment as the crew hoists the sails, the trade winds fill the canvas, and you set off to your next secret island destination.

There’s no rush. You’ll have plenty of time ashore to explore vibrant villages, sip rum at quirky beach bars, or laze the days away on pristine beaches.

Even the nights are magical. Shipmates gather on deck to dance, share a joke or tell tales of the day’s adventures. Lean on the rail, and steal a kiss under a canopy of stars.

Live in the now, and breathe it all in. This is island life--and you’re living it!

Picture this if you will - you have embarked in Barbados for a Caribbean cruise on a spacious cruise liner. You have a lovely cabin with its own balcony, but you decide to go up on deck for your sailaway party. Looking out across the harbour, drink in hand, you spot the most extraordinary sight. Proudly leaving the harbour under full sail , a beautiful tall ship glides through the water, sails rippling in the breeze. Are you stricken with cruise envy? If so, this is the article for you. These are the best cruise ships with sails...

A sailing cruise ship is not for everyone, but if it ticks your boxes, you have a few options to choose from...

Windstar Cruises

Following a major refurbishment in November 2019, Windstar's flagship sailing cruise ship Wind Surf re-entered service with crisp new sails. Nearly half a football field's worth of sturdy Dacron sail-cloth measuring 21,570 square feet was hand-crafted in France by the team of maritime designers and artisans at Incidence Sails, premier designers in the offshore racing and Super Yacht sectors. Indeed the Wind Surf sail project was led by noted designers Stéphane Amiot and Maxime Paul, who sailed for France's Olympic sailing team in the 1992 Olympics.

The computerised sails are self-furling and operate remotely from the Bridge, with fore and aft guidance from the ship's Nautical Officers. Wind Surf has achieved a top speed under sail power alone of an amazing 15.6 knots during a transatlantic ocean crossing. If sailing ship cruises appeal to you, a few options are available. Wind Surf (342 guests) summers in Europe, before crossing the Atlantic for a season in the Caribbean, with a focus on the southerly Leeward Islands offering the small-ship yachting experience and great value for money too .

Meanwhile the smaller Wind Star (148 guests) weaves her magic on a sailing cruise in the Greek islands during the summer, the perfect area to explore under sail, and in the winter combines the iconic transit of the Panama Canal with the magical Pacific coast of Costa Rica, plus in Winter 2026 you will find her in the Canary Islands . Sister ship Wind Spirit operates similar itineraries in summer and winter months, but including convenient Barbados round-trip departures in her Caribbean season.

Windstar Cruises - Wind Star at sunset

The only French flagged cruise line, Ponant, offer some of the best cruise ships in the industry - they have a fleet of sleek and chic motor yachts which are extremely popular, but Ponant regulars remain supremely loyal to the first ship of the fleet, Le Ponant itself (the name means 'setting sun').

Having undergone a complete refit in 2021, when her already small guest numbers where reduced further from 64 to just 32, Le Ponant offers a truly private, welcoming and intimate environment. Sophisticated yet friendly, this ship gives you a little taste of France at sea, for al fresco cruising at its best. Ponant's itineraries are some of the most interesting and unique out there and on board Le Ponant you can explore Cape Verde, Croatia, Corsica, and the Caribbean .

Ponant Cruises - Le Ponant in the Maldives

Sea Cloud Cruises

Tall ships Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II give an authentic taste of classic sailing traditions, and in 2021 they were joined by the newly built Sea Cloud Spirit , a fully rigged three-master. Teak decks, polished wood, sparkling brass and carefully stowed ropes will captivate any sailor.

On these sailing cruise ships, sailing is not just for show - it is a true craft. When the orders ring out over the deck and the crew climb the masts to hoist the sails, e very single manoeuvre marks a centuries-old ritual being brought to life. Combine that with great itineraries, genial fellow guests and the best in service, and you have a winner. The vessels are often chartered, so look out for sailing cruise opportunities in Europe and the Caribbean.

Star Clippers

The beautiful clipper ships of Star Clippers are unique sailing cruise ships charting a new age of sail, with a passionately loyal following of sail and cruise enthusiasts alike. Royal Clipper , Star Clipper and Star Flyer are modern ships, created for people who love their creature comforts alongside the traditions and romance of the legendary era of sailing ship cruises.

On these ships, you can hide away in the nets at the bow, or even (not for the faint-hearted) climb the mast (with safety harness provided) to one of the passenger lookout crow's nests.

ABOUT CLIPPER CITY

The tall ship, be part of something epic — the mighty clipper city tall ship awaits, 158 foot l.o.a. gaff-rigged schooner uscg certified for 149 passengers.

THE EXPERIENCE Have you ever hoisted a sail? Or taken your turn at the wheel of a historic clipper ship? Take a deep breath, feel the massive, heroic boat beneath you and get ready for an epic experience suited to every type of adventure-seeker. Originally designed for hauling lumber, the Clipper City has a sturdy, big-ship feel that lifts you high off the water. Six crew members will be hauling on the sails, charging around and getting you involved. Rather sit back and enjoy? You can do that, too.

THE BOAT With a length of 158 feet and masts rising 120 feet, she can comfortably sail 149 people, the most of any passenger sailboat in the United States. You will look up and see sails that are bigger than your house. Our masts reaching towards the sky, we just fit under Brooklyn Bridge by a few meters when the tide is just low enough! This large sailboat has waist-high railings and provides a big, open deck (100 feet x 30 feet) with benches, hatches and a raised quarter deck where the captain steers. During your journey, we’ll fly 5,000 feet of sail.

THE REFRESHMENTS Though you may bring your own food, the Clipper City is a nautical adventure with a full-service bar onboard. Bartenders offer reasonably-priced, ice-cold cocktails, local beer on tap, tea, coffee, and soda.

THE LOCATION Sailing fits easily into your downtown itinerary. Steps from Chinatown and the South Street Seaport, the Clipper City departs from Pier 17 at 89 South Street, just south of the Brooklyn Bridge.

THE HISTORY The original Clipper City was built as a lumber schooner just prior to the Civil War. Our Clipper City was rebuilt from the original plans, on loan from the Smithsonian Institution, and has recently been refurbished.

WHO IS CLIPPER CITY BEST SUITED FOR? Large groups, families and children of all ages. This sailboat permits wheelchairs and strollers on board. For those who wish to leave strollers behind, secure stroller parking is available.

Outstanding and friendly staff - fun event to start off a Saturday. Great views around Boston Harbor and sailing experience.

The cruise and crew were amazing. The scenery was beautiful. Awesome pastries from Flour bakery. I’ve did the sunset cruise years ago and I would do them both again.

This was such a beautiful memory for my daughter and I. We sat and drank our mimosas and the peaceful beauty with everything just made the trip! The crew is sooo nice!! The brunch desserts are perfect! The flour bakery is outstanding. Overall.. moments that will last a long time. Recommend highly!!!!

logo, company name

Fantastic! Friendly crew. The mimosas were delicious and the treats were wonderful! A great range of them! The sailing was beautiful and they offered to take pics for us. https://www.getyourguide.com/boston-l260/boston-mimosas-brunch-sail-in-boston-harbor-t646473/

The view of the harbor was amazing and the experience of the tall ship was one of a kind. The crew was friendly, knowledgeable, and always available to help. We also loved the relaxing pace of the sail.

It was just wonderful. My husband got to help raise the two large sails. I really enjoyed that we actually sailed around the harbor. The engine was only used for leaving and returning to the wharf. The crew was awesome.

We danced with strangers, sang, laughed and had a wonderful time! I don't plan on having another bachelorette party, but if I do, I'd do this again! 6/5 stars!

We loved seeing Boston this way. The sunset was beautiful and the crew was friendly. My only regret is that we didn’t do the longer cruise.

Sail Your True North

Sailing the waters of Grand Traverse Bay is the highlight of any trip “up north.” Stretching north from Traverse City, the Bay’s crystal waters and tree-lined shores dazzle the eyes and soothe the spirit. The Bay is the best place to be in the summer, and the best way to experience its magic is by sailing aboard Traverse Tall Ship Company’s Schooner Manitou or Sailing Yacht Scout . Setting out from the dock and quickly setting sail, both these fine vessels navigate this gorgeous landscape using the power of the wind.

Sailing Yacht Scout

Sailing Yacht Scout allows up to six passengers a chance to chart their own course for adventure. All of Scout’s sails are private bookings, so you have a captain to sail you where you want to go, and the whole boat to yourself.

Your vessel: the Living Legend Sea Cloud

Confident Grande Dame, sporty style icon and generous hostess – the SEA CLOUD is a living legend. Built 90 years ago as a private luxury yacht, she combines extravagant charm and authentic windjammer feeling.

  • AND VERY PRIVATE.

The most beautiful windjammer legend of all times and for many the true center of a journey for a maximum of 64 passengers.

A private yacht with an eventful history

Golden swan-shaped water taps, magnificent marble fireplaces, French antiques – as heiress to a fortune worth millions, Marjorie Merriweather Post was able to give free rein to her imagination when building her private yacht, which was launched in Kiel in 1931. Even today, every detail on the SEA CLOUD radiates the glamour of a bygone era. Her elegance seems timeless, as she has retained her unconventional charm.

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

Throughout the commissioned construction of the SEA CLOUD in Kiel, Germany, and later when Marjorie was already living on board, she collected precious antiques from all over the world. This deluxe suite is one of the many examples of how skillfully she integrated the valuable pieces into the interior, and thus, into the overall appearance and ambiance of her private luxury yacht.

  • Approx. 237 sq. ft.
  • Marble bathroom approx. 54 sq. ft. with shower, bathtub, and golden fixtures
  • Queen bed, 63 in. x 79 in.
  • Walk-in closet
  • Marble fireplace (electric)

CAT. A Owners' Suite 2

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

In addition to her exquisite taste, Marjorie’s attention to detail is also on display in the owners’ suites, richly reflected in the chambers of her first husband Edward Hutton, who gifted her the majestic SEA CLOUD sailing yacht. The maple wood paneling and furnishings create a feeling of warmth and solidity offset by a light, coffered ceiling. Hutton’s bureau-bookcase secretary with mirrored glass is a particularly stunning piece. In contrast to her white bath, his is done in red Carrara marble and includes a chest of drawers and golden fixtures.

  • Approx. 366 sq. ft.
  • Marble bathroom approx. 97 sq. ft. with shower and bathtub
  • California king bed, 71 x 79 in.

Category B: Deluxe Suites

Renowned nobility, celebrities and industry titans have all called these deluxe suites home on legendary sailings.

  • approx. 43 sq. ft. with shower, bathtub, and golden fixtures

Marjorie frequently mentioned her goal of making family, friends and notable guests feel at home every minute on board the SEA CLOUD. Accordingly, she designed spaces like this deluxe suite to feel like the ultimate in comfort, five-star accommodations. Antique mahogany chests of drawers, marble in the bathroom and by the fireplace and unique pieces create cozy elegance.

  • Approx. 215 sq. ft.
  • Marble bathroom approx. 58 sq. ft. with shower, bathtub, and golden fixtures
  • Two twin beds arranged as a double, 36 in. x 79 in. each

CAT. B Deluxe Suite 6

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

Exclusive getaways on the SEA CLOUD are also journeys through time. The original design and decor of the deluxe suites feel like a portal to a bygone era of glamor. In the spirit of private yachting, this antique mahogany furniture was selected so as not to overwhelm the space, and the fabric palettes complement the light ambiance of elevated comfort.

  • Approx. 194 sq. ft.
  • Marble bathroom approx. 43 sq. ft. with shower, bathtub, and golden fixtures

CAT. B Deluxe Suite 7

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

As the SEA CLOUD’s original owner, Marjorie designed the interiors of her luxury sailing yacht with such attention to detail because she wanted to offer her daughter, Dina Merrill, a wonderful and safe home on board. This is especially noticeable in this deluxe suite where Dina spent a large part of her childhood. The warm maple finishings stand out with dramatic mahogany inlays. The unusual floor plan, including an angled fireplace makes the space feel even larger.

  • Approx. 258 sq. ft.
  • Marble bathroom approx. 75 sq. ft. with shower, bathtub and golden fixtures

CAT. B Deluxe Suite 8

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

The main deck, where the original suites are located, is the heart and soul of the SEA CLOUD. This deluxe suite envelopes guests in its spirit of an exclusive private yacht. It is on display in the all the details, from fixtures to furnishings to finishings, complemented with a regal red and coral palette. Built-in cabinetry creates extra space.

  • Approx. 268 sq. ft.
  • Marble bathroom approx. 65 sq. ft. with shower, bathtub, and golden fixtures
  • California king bed (2 mattresses), 71 x 79 in.
  • Additional fold-out bed

Category C: Deluxe Suites

Cat. b deluxe suite 9.

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

Deluxe Suites 9 and 10 are also part of the original accommodations on the main deck. Once used as single cabins for the former shipowners’ staff and their guests, they were redesigned into large luxury lodgings during renovation of the SEA CLOUD.

  • marble bathroom approx. 35 sq. ft. with shower, bathtub, and golden fixtures
  • Generous storage space

CAT. B Deluxe Suite 10

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

The design of Deluxe Suites 9 and 10 is based on historical models with a modern aesthetic in warm fabrics and light wood tones. Both suites are located at the end of the original hallway and connect to the promenade deck by a separate staircase.

  • Approx. 198 sq. ft.
  • Marble bathroom approx. 39 sq. ft. with shower and golden fixtures

Category 1: Staterooms (double bed)

Cat. 1 staterooms.

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

Like all staterooms on the captain’s and lido deck, these two were built as recently as the late 1970s and offer all the comforts of private yacht accommodations. Panoramic windows cornering the head of the bed create a bright, airy vibe with views to match.

  • Approx. 140 sq. ft.
  • Marble bathroom with shower and golden fixtures
  • Queen bed (2 separate mattresses), 63 in. x 79 in.
  • Spacious closet

Category 2: Staterooms (twin beds convertible to double bed)

Cat. 2 staterooms.

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

Even though the staterooms on the captain’s and lido deck were harmoniously integrated into the SEA CLOUD after her initial construction, they still follow the design standards set on the original. Their tasteful interiors are a contemporary interpretation of Marjorie’s aesthetic from the 1930s. The elevated comfort of the spaces is complemented by spectacular sea views from double windows.

  • Approx. 145 sq. ft.
  • Two twin beds, 36 in. x 79 in. (convert to queen upon request)

Category 3: Staterooms (twin beds)

Cat. 3 staterooms.

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

These plush staterooms have a special maritime charm due to their location between the stations for hoisting and lowering the sails. The deckhouse, which was added during the renovation of the SEA CLOUD, is an oasis of peace, and due to its location on the promenade deck, the staterooms are also only steps away from the restaurant and lounge.

  • Approx. 135 sq. ft.
  • Two windows with sea views

Category 4: Staterooms (twin beds)

Cat. 4 staterooms.

In addition to the luxurious comfort that defines the SEA CLOUD, both staterooms offer a special feature: direct access to the most charming place on the tall ship, the Blue Lagoon. The semi-circular, blue-cushioned space is the traditional onboard area for relaxing under the daytime sun or dreamy night views of starry skies twinkling off the ocean.

  • Approx. 113 sq. ft.
  • Window with sea view

Category 5: Staterooms (lower and upper bed)

Venice and The Croatian Coast Cruise, The Enchanting Croatian Coast

These special staterooms were made for sailing enthusiasts. In Marjorie’s time, these were accommodations for SEA CLOUD officers, thus, the vibe is authentically nautical. The best part, which is exclusive to these staterooms, is direct access to the promenade deck, directly below the bridge. Open the door to breathe in the salty sea air and experience the charming maritime ambience.

  • Approx. 102 sq. ft.
  • Upper and lower beds, 32 in. x 79 in.
  • Porthole and door to promenade deck

What is the largest cruise ship in the world?

Ashley Kosciolek

Does size really matter? The cruise industry thinks so. For more than a century, cruise lines have competed to claim the title of world's largest cruise ship.

When it set sail in 1912, ill-fated Titanic was the largest and grandest passenger vessel of its time. But since 2009, when Royal Caribbean debuted its first Oasis Class ship, those superlatives have applied to vessels more than five times Titanic's size.

tall ship cruise lines

Today, the largest cruise ships are floating cities, offering a plethora of bars and restaurants, expansive spas and sun deck retreats. They feature scores of recreation opportunities, including zip lines, surf simulators , rock climbing walls, ice-skating rinks, escape rooms, laser tag, top-deck go-karts , virtual reality gaming and even roller coasters .

So, what is the largest cruise ship in the world, and how do other cruise ships compare? Here's a quick rundown of the world's biggest cruise ships by both gross registered tons and maximum passenger capacity. Unsurprisingly, Royal Caribbean's Icon Class and Oasis Class dominate the top five in both categories, with only two other lines joining Royal Caribbean.

What is the world's largest cruise ship?

Currently, it's Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas . At 250,800 gross registered tons and carrying up to 7,600 passengers (plus 2,350 crew members), the ship is a true behemoth. It includes neighborhoods that feature everything from waterslides, an indoor AquaTheater, a carousel and an adults-only sun deck to lavish suites, retail shops, thousands of live plants and more than two dozen bars and restaurants.

The rest of the world's largest cruise ships

Note: This article excludes ships from lines like Costa Cruises, P&O Cruises and Aida, which do not cater to the North American market.

World's biggest cruise ships by tonnage

  • Icon of the Seas: 250,800 gross registered tons
  • Wonder of the Seas : 236,857 gross registered tons
  • Symphony of the Seas: 228,081 gross registered tons
  • Harmony of the Seas: 226,963 gross registered tons
  • Oasis of the Seas: 226,838 gross registered tons
  • Allure of the Seas : 225,282 gross registered tons

  • Carnival's Mardi Gras : 180,000 gross registered tons

World's biggest cruise ships by passenger capacity

  • Icon of the Seas: 7,600 passengers
  • Wonder of the Seas: 6,988 passengers
  • Allure of the Seas: 6,780 passengers
  • Oasis of the Seas: 6,771 passengers
  • MSC World Europa: 6,762 passengers
  • Harmony of the Seas: 6,687 passengers
  • Symphony of the Seas: 6,680 passengers
  • Carnival's Mardi Gras: 6,631 passengers
  • Carnival Celebration: 6,631 passengers
  • Carnival Jubilee: 6,631 passengers
  • MSC Grandiosa: 6,334 passengers
  • MSC Virtuosa: 6,334 passengers
  • MSC Bellissima: 5,686 passengers

What is the biggest cruise ship in the world today (2024)?

Currently, the largest cruise ship in the world by both tonnage and passenger capacity is Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas. It takes the title from fleetmate Wonder of the Seas. Several other Royal Caribbean vessels — including Freedom Class and Oasis Class namesakes Freedom of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas — were also the largest at one time.

What is the world's biggest cruise ship price?

Royal Caribbean paid about $2 billion to build Icon of the Seas. At press time, the least expensive cabins on Icon of the Seas started at $1,210 per person for a seven-night voyage ($173 per person, per night). If that's out of your price range, check out my recommendations for ships to try instead of Icon of the Seas .

What cruise ship is 5 times bigger than Titanic?

All of the ships in Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class and Icon Class are at least five times larger than Titanic was, in terms of size. As far as passenger numbers, Titanic had capacity for 2,453 people, while Icon of the Seas can hold 7,600.

What is the largest cruise ship capacity?

Icon of the Seas can hold up to 7,600 guests at maximum capacity or 5,610 guests on a double occupancy basis (two people per cabin). The ship also employs more than 2,300 crew members. That means the ship can carry nearly 10,000 people when it's fully crewed and every passenger bed is occupied.

You won't be 'overcrowded by thousands of tourists': What to know about Montreal cruises

tall ship cruise lines

  • Montreal is the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province.
  • The city offers a relatively quaint cruise experience.
  • The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023.

On a recent afternoon, I strolled beside patches of purple flowers on a wooden walkway at the Port of Montreal. The Promenade d'Iberville green roof, with western red cedar decking and more than 24,000 aromatic and flowering plants, was built on top of the city’s main cruise terminal.

The effect was less industrial infrastructure – like many ports – and more charming urban parks.

Montreal may be the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province, but it offers a relatively quaint cruise experience. Bridges between Montreal and Quebec City block vessels with air draft – the distance from the waterline to the highest point on a ship – over 49 meters (or about 161 feet) from berthing at its facilities in Old Montreal.

The ships that visit are generally smaller (though the city can accommodate those with a maximum 50-meter (164 feet) air draft east of the Jacques Cartier Bridge).

“We are positioning Montreal as a niche port for luxury ships,” Yves Gilson, associate director of cruises at the Port of Montreal, told USA TODAY during a visit in May. Here’s what to know about sailing into and out of the city.

The cruise inventory tends to be upscale

Montreal typically welcomes ships carrying 2,000 passengers or less from several upscale cruise lines, which tend to operate ships with lower capacity. Those include Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Viking, Ponant and more. Though not a luxury brand, one of the city’s main clients is Holland America Line, which will send its 1,432-guest Volendam ship there this season.

The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023. By contrast, its neighbor to the northeast, Quebec City, saw 154,000 passengers . Despite its smaller population, large ships from operators like Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line will visit Quebec City this season (along with smaller vessels).

Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel, added that it’s not just ocean cruise ships that stop in Montreal. “There are river cruises that can get in and out of there as well,” he said.

Gilson noted that the city “could absorb” traffic from bigger ships if not for the bridges. “But on the other hand, the experience for the guest is marvelous because you know they will not be overcrowded by thousands of tourists,” he said.

You can hit the ground walking

The main cruise terminal is close to many of the city’s popular attractions. Old Montreal’s Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica and the Place d’Armes are less than a 10-minute walk away, and numerous restaurants, shops, and museums are also nearby.

I grabbed a prosciutto sandwich at Italian grocery store Dispensa; ate on a bench outside; picked up a coffee at Cafecito and was able to be at the main terminal within 15 minutes or so on foot while taking in views of the water and architectural landmarks like Habitat 67.

There are also multiple close bicycle rental and Metro stations, and waiting taxis (the port works with software platform, Véco Taxi, which gives priority to electric vehicles).

Gilson said more lines are offering overnight stays in Montreal, giving guests more time to explore.

When is the best time for a Montreal cruise?

Montreal’s cruise season begins in May and ends in October, hitting its peak during the last two months of that period. Feldman said fall foliage is a particular draw for passengers.

Montreal often features on Canada and New England itineraries alongside ports such as Boston, Massachusetts and Halifax, Nova Scotia. The port’s cruise calendar can be found by clicking here .

The sailings tend to last around 10 to 14 days. “The distances between the ports in this region can be significant and navigation through areas like the St. Lawrence River and around the Gulf of Maine take time,” he said. Passengers on those sailings are looking for a “more immersive experience.”

Would you spend $14,000 on a cruise?: Here's why these travelers splurged

“Longer itineraries allow for more time in each port and often include scenic cruising days,” he added.

Cruise ships have historically avoided the area when cold sets in, but that could soon change: Ponant’s icebreaking Le Commandant Charcot will offer sailings in St. Lawrence in the winter of 2025. While the ship will not visit Montreal due to its size – though it will stop in Quebec City – Gilson hopes it will mark a shift.

“And eventually, we believe that all the cruise lines will get into the St. Lawrence during the winter,” he said. “So, it's gonna be an all-year-round cruise destination.”

A guide to norway’s coastal cruise with havila voyages.

Four Havila Voyages ships operate on the Norwegian coastal route.

Every day of the year, a ferry sets sail from Bergen, Norway’s second biggest city. It calls at 34 ports before arriving at Kirkenes, close to the Russian border, before making its way back to Bergen. This is the Norwegian coastal route.

Given that the ferries stay close to shore, they offer one of the best ways to experience the stunning Norwegian coastline, explore the remote Arctic region, visit tiny coastal communities, and truly soak up Norwegian culture.

In addition to the important passenger and cargo ferry service, the route is known around the world for its cruise-like voyages sold to tourists.

For a few decades, Hurtigruten was the only company serving the route. But now, four of the 11 ferries plying the route are operated by Havila Voyages , the latest in a long list of companies providing service over the coastal route’s 130-year history .

From delightful dining to brand-new ships specifically designed for the route, here’s what to expect from the new kids on the block.

Bolivian General Arrested After Breaching Presidential Palace In Alleged Coup Attempt—Here’s What To Know

Iss astronauts take shelter after russian spacecraft breaks up in orbit, thunder takes high upside swing in 2024 nba draft with nikola topic, havila voyages concept explained.

Typically, international tourists choose from three voyages: the northbound leg, the southbound leg, or the full 11-night roundtrip voyage. The experience of each voyage is akin to taking a cruise but on a ferry.

Passengers on the Havila Polaris out on deck making the most of the arrival into Tromsø, Norway.

The modern ships are comfortable with plenty of space—inside and out—to enjoy the scenery and excellent dining, although there is limited entertainment beyond the landscapes outside and the multiple ports of call.

Trying to choose? The northbound voyage includes longer port stops in cities like Ålesund, Trondheim, and Tromsø. However, the shorter southbound voyage is a little cheaper and includes the delightful sailing through Vesterålen and the Raftsund waterway.

It’s also possible to book shorter voyages, such as Trondheim to Tromsø, or book port-to-port transit between any two ports on the route.

All four ships in Havila Voyages’ coastal fleet are identical. They’ve been designed specifically to sail this historic route, so come with comfortable cabins and tall windows designed to fill the interiors with light and provide plenty of opportunity to enjoy the sights along the Norwegian coastline.

The fleet runs on LNG and each vessel is capable of running emission-free on battery power for up to four hours. This means it will still be able to visit the Geirangerfjord after Norway’s new environmental regulations come into force from 2026.

In fact, to take advantage of this capability, Havila has extended its Geirangerfjord season on the coastal route, adding April and May onto the previous June-August season from 2025.

Large windows are the standout feature of the new Havila Voyages cruise ferries.

The best value accommodations, inside cabins, are designed for port-to-port passengers and shorter journeys, although it is possible to book one for the full voyage. However, for a slightly higher price, the seaview cabins offer significantly more space and comfort for those on a longer voyage.

A few comfortable lounges are dotted around the ship, including the excellent observation lounge. Packed with comfortable seats, the lounge’s vast windows ensure a good view no matter where you sit.

Where Havila’s ships really shine is on the outside decks. Whether you’re hunting for the northern lights in the winter or watching small communities pass by late into the evening under the midnight sun, there’s so much space to take in your surroundings.

A pair of good-sized hot tubs and an outdoor bar open for special events add to the appeal.

Dining Options

Whereas cruises are renowned for lavish buffet restaurants, Havila Voyages offers guests an all à la carte concept. In an effort to reduce food waste , breakfast and lunch consist of unlimited small dishes made to order, while a more traditional three-course dinner is available daily.

The meals are supplemented by snacks and light meals available from the onboard cafe, which is also used by local ferry passengers. A fine dining restaurant with a fixed menu of local cuisine offers an alternative dining option at an additional charge.

A la carte dining three times a day is one of the big plus points of Havila Voyages.

Finally, local dishes are put under the spotlight at specific events, often held out on deck and timed for sailaways or scenic points in the journey.

Onboard Entertainment

The biggest difference from a traditional cruise is the lack of any onboard entertainment. The focus of the Norwegian coastal route is the nature, landscapes, and multiple daily port calls.

Daily talks are held by the onboard team covering the main ports and an introduction to Norwegian culture, but there are few other activities. Many passengers choose to bring books, knitting, or a good pair of binoculars. During the midnight sun period, there will always be something to see.

Port calls range from just 10 minutes in the middle of the night to several hours in bigger cities like Trondheim and Tromsø. Excursions are available covering activities such as dog sledding and snowmobiling in the winter to guided hikes and beer tasting. Bus tours to the North Cape and the Kirkenes Snow Hotel are always popular.

How Much Does It Cost?

As the Norwegian coastal route is operated on behalf of the Norwegian government, the ships are Norwegian flagged, use Scandinavian-speaking employees, and must abide by Norwegian law on things like alcohol taxes and duties.

All of these factors raise the price of a voyage compared with an equivalent cruise. But that being said, no cruise gets as close to the coastline or visits such small, remote Arctic communities as the coastal route.

11-night roundtrip voyages start from approximately $1,250 (inside) per person and $2,100 (seaview) per person, based on two people sharing a cabin. Prices rise significantly in the summer season. If roundtrip voyages are sold out, there may still be availability on one-way voyages (especially southbound) or port-to-port journeys.

Beverage packages are available, but they are offered as a discounted pre-payment package rather than an unlimited model offered by most cruise lines. If you’re traveling as a couple and you like a drink with dinner, a package will probably prove better value than buying individual drinks.
