India reinstates e-visas for travellers from UK

The long-awaited move follows several measures undertaken to boost indian visa processing facilities..

The Indian High Commission in London Monday announced the reinstating of the electronic visa (e-visa) for UK travellers, a move that will be widely welcomed amid a massive rush for visas to India in recent months.

The Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, said the service will be available “forthwith” and High Commission officials in London confirmed that travellers can start applying for e-visas to India from this week. It said that the system upgrade process is underway and the Indian visa website will soon be ready to receive applications for e-visas.

“The big news today is that we are rolling out e-Visas once again,” Doraiswami announced in a video posted on Twitter. “This should enable friends from the UK to travel far more easily to India,” he said.

The announcement was instantly greeted with great cheer, with it being dubbed “excellent” and “wonderful” news in response to the Indian High Commissioner’s Twitter announcement.

It had emerged in the UK Parliament that e-visas were among the issues discussed between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his UK counterpart, Rishi Sunak , during their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Indonesia last month.

The long-awaited move follows several measures undertaken to boost Indian visa processing facilities, including a new Indian visa centre in central London and Visa at Your Doorstep (VAYD) service, to address the high post-pandemic travel demand from the UK to India.

The new India Visa Application Centre (IVAC) at Marylebone is operated by VFS Global, the outsourcing and technology services provider for governments and diplomatic missions, which has also facilitated a more streamlined process for group tourism or those travelling as a group, typically via a travel agency to the same destination using the same flights.

Festive offer

The new centre is the third India visa centre in London, with VFS Global operating a network of 10 IVACs across the UK – in Belfast, Birmingham, Bradford, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, central London, Hounslow, Leicester, and Manchester.

“We are always looking at finding practical solutions to address customer experience challenges. As a responsible service provider that manages non-judgmental and administrative tasks related to visa applications for the governments we work with, we have taken measures along with the High Commissioner of India in London to help visa applicants with a seamless visa application experience,” said Aditya Arora, COO of VFS Global.

The visa firm said it has been able to release more appointments as London and Birmingham started receiving applications on Saturdays and weekday afternoons. Since March this year, VFS Global has also partnered with the High Commission of India in London and its Consulates around the UK to set up weekend consular camps across the UK.

Pakistan knocked out of T20 World Cup

The USA vs Ireland match was cancelled due to a wet outfield, resulting in both teams receiving one point. This led to the USA advancing to the Super 8s and Pakistan being eliminated from the T20 World Cup. The bad weather in Florida also caused the cancellation of a previous match, resulting in Sri Lanka's elimination.

How to get a visa for India: Rules for UK applications explained with new measures to ease ‘stressful’ backlog

The uk has been excluded from the list of countries eligible for e-visas for travel to india. hundreds of holidays were disrupted as travellers struggled to secure an in-person visa appointment.

indian visas british tourists wait times new measures

British tourists must apply for a visa to visit India , and are not eligible for e-visas, a rule that has caused disruption to hundreds of holidays.

However, the Indian High Commission has announced new “interim measures” to speed up applications, including a service that will collect relevant papers from your doorstep and return them once processed – for a fee.

Before the pandemic , the UK was among tens of countries from which most holidaymakers could use an e-visa to travel to India . The system was fairly straightforward and similar to applying for a US Esta.

It was reinstated for 156 countries when India fully reopened to tourism in February , but the UK was left off the list of eligible nationalities. The Indian High Commission confirmed on 7 October, following weeks of confusion, that Britons would need to attend in-person appointments and interviews to secure a visa.

In October, visa applicants reported difficulties securing a slot at the the nine processing centres across the UK, which were booked up well into November. Travellers who were able to book an appointment spoke of long waits at the centres and people being sent away due to small mistakes on their paperwork.

UK tour operators have cancelled many trips, and refunded customers. Some have stopped selling trips to India for the rest of the year.

Ashley Quint, holiday designer at Berkhamsted travel agency TravelTime World, told i that two clients had found the process “difficult” and “stressful”.

Last month, Aito, the specialist travel association, estimated that around 1,500 of its members’ bookings were affected.

Why can’t British tourists use an e-visa?

It is not clear why the UK was been excluded from the list of eligible countries; Canada has also been left off the list.

Theories include an administrative oversight with the end of the Brexit transition period having occurred between India suspending and reinstating its e-visas (all current EU member states are on the eligible list), or as a reciprocal measure given that it is an arduous process for Indian citizens to apply for a UK visa.

For now, there is no suggestion as to if, and when, e-visas might be reinstated for Britons.

How to get a visa for travel to India

You should make an appointment in good time ahead of your trip to India. These can be booked online .

There is a three-step process: After applying online, submit your documents at an Indian Visa Application Centre, then collect the documents from the centre or receive them via post. You can check the status of an application online .

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warns that you should make sure that you have the right visa and that it is valid for the purpose and duration of your stay.

Under the entry requirements on the India advice page, it adds: “If you enter India on the wrong visa, you could be detained on arrival and you may be deported and blacklisted, meaning that you cannot enter India again.”

There is further information available through the High Commission of India in London and the Government of India’s Bureau of Immigration .

The FCDO advises that overstaying your visa is an offence in India and to ensure you leave the country before your visa has expired.

Visa applicants of Pakistani origin who have dual nationality must apply for an Indian visa on their Pakistani passport.

The new measures to speed up applications

Indian High Commissioner, Vikram K Doralswami, said in a video posted on Twitter last week that the number of visa applications being handled for travel to India from the UK had doubled to 40,000 from 20,000 in a month as a result of changes made to the booking system in October.

The High Commissioner has previously said that the visa process had been “difficult”.

New visa processing centres have opened in Glasgow and Marylebone, London (the latter on 1 November) to help reduce waiting times.

A new “visa at your doorstep” service is also being introduced under which travellers can pay a fee to have their papers collected for processing and returned to them after processing.

To assist with this, the service provider will also offer a service at a small cost to have documents checked online before they are taken to be processed.

There will also be a form filling service for those that need extra help in completing the paperwork.

The Indian High Commission has yet to release details on how to apply and pay for these services.

Visas for group tours travelling to the same destination in India and on the same flights, usually with a tour operator, are available again as of 1 November.

What to do if you’re due to travel to India

If you are planning to travel to India in the next couple of months, then be sure to apply for a visa as soon as possible.

Travel agents have reported customers having to rely on appointments on the day before they travel.

Ashley Quint from TravelTime World told i : “ I have been trying to help a couple of people who have been caught up in this mess.

“They were panicking because the only date they could get for their appointment was the day before they were travelling and found the process difficult.”

“I believe they got their visa in the end, and were able to travel, but it was really to the wire and stressful.”

If travelling with a tour operator, or booking through a travel agent, contact them for the latest advice.

India may reverse its policy to exclude British travellers from the eVisa scheme within weeks or even days, officials have told The Independent .

At present the UK is in a small minority of nations whose citizens must apply in person for a visa. The process is far more expensive and time consuming than the online eVisa, and there is a long waiting list for appointment at Indian visa centres in the UK.

As a result, tens of thousands of British winter visitors to India have had to cancel their trips – threatening the viability of some specialist tour operators.

The decision to impose extra red tape on Brits is part of a row between the governments in Delhi and London over ease of access for Indian visitors to the UK.

But Rakesh Kumar Verma, additional secretary at the Ministry of Tourism in India, told The Independent : “We are aware of this challenge, and it is under consideration at a very high level, and I am sure this will be addressed very soon.”

Other officials have privately said the policy – which is causing stress for travellers and financial harm for tour operators – may be reversed in as little as 10 days.

India, which has a large presence at the World Travel Market in London, is urging British visitors to book trips ahead of the anticipated change.

But anyone doing so risks financial loss if they cannot secure a visa in time.

Rajeev Kohli, the joint managing director of Creative Travel, said: “Operating to India has never been easy.

“We all recognise that visa systems across the world have collapsed, no matter which country it is.

“I do know the Ministry of Tourism has been working around the clock.

“We’re expecting a lot of short-term uptake once the problem gets resolved.”

Travel industry figures say UK holidaymakers seeking warm, good value and interesting winter destinations are flocking instead to Egypt, Sri Lanka and Thailand – all of which have much easier admission rules than India.

Indian Visa Delays Hit British Tourists

Matthew Parsons , Skift

October 11th, 2022 at 6:51 AM EDT

India’s High Commission is enforcing rules that require in-person visa applications for British citizens — a move that has caught out many in the travel industry.

Previously it turned a blind eye to visas that were being processed in batches, according to one specialist tour operator.

But on Oct. 7 the High Commission in the UK stated applicants must attend visa centers in person , as it had noticed “unauthorized agents and individuals are illegally charging fees and collecting India visa applications for submission at VFS Centres, misleading applicants and misrepresenting the services they can legally provide.”

Thousands of travelers may now be forced to cancel their holidays, as appointments at visa centers are booked out in advance.

“There were a set of visa companies who would enter without an appointment, with 20 or 30 passports,” said Amrit Singh, co-founder and managing director of UK tour operator TransIndus . “They were being processed. All of a sudden, somebody higher up has realized that this is breaking the rules. So they’ve put a stop to it.”

She said TransIndus was now unable to accept new bookings until January. “The bigger problem is that we can’t take any fresh bookings. We couldn’t book a holiday for a client knowing there’s no opportunity for them to acquire a visa,” Singh said.

For clients traveling beyond January there was still time, but for those traveling between now and December it was “a real issue.”

“It was a casual arrangement (before) that the visa services carved out for themselves, with the local offices. I don’t think it was a formal arrangement sanctioned by the local High Commission,” Singh added.

The UK’s Association of Independent Tour Operators said 1,500 bookings through its own members worth $10 million were affected, according to reports .

According to The Times , VFS Global, which runs the processing bureaux, said the decision to insist travellers present in-person had been made due to the high number of administrative errors made by the third-party visa companies.

India currently offers 156 countries access to an online visa application process, which is similar to the U.S.’ Electronic System for Travel Authorization. It reintroduced e-visas in March this year , after Covid-19 cases decined. But UK and Canada nationals are currently excluded from this e-visa system, along with residents from Algeria, Burkina Faso, Lebanon and Pakistan.

However, as the UK government continues talks over a Free Trade Agreement with India, there are hopes the UK could be included, with “mobility and migration” under discussion on both sides.

One commentator has suggested that India’s decision to clamp down on visas was retaliation over UK home secretary Suella Braverman’s comments she had “concerns about having an open borders migration policy with India.”

“There is some discussion of a trade deal being finalized by Oct. 24. Perhaps the e-visa is a part of that negotiation,” Singh said.

In the meantime, individuals wanting an Indian visa can appoint another person to attend one of the nine visa processing centres in the UK, via a formal letter of authorization.

The U.S. is also facing delays issuing its own visas , which could prevent 6.6 million people from traveling there next year, resulting in a loss of $11.6 billion in spending, economists have warned.

Notes: Recent updates on India Tourist Visa

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced relief measures aimed at boosting the country’s tourism industry. As part of the measures, Sitharaman has stated that the first 5 lakh tourist visas will be issued free of charge once the Indian government resumes visa issuance.

This is good news for travelers from the UK. Usually, UK citizens have to pay the fee to get an Indian visa. However, now they can obtain the e-tourist visa for free. Tourists can avail of this offer only once.

This scheme will be in effect until March 31, 2022, or until the first 5 lakh visas have been distributed. Don’t miss it! Grab this chance, get a free visa, and travel to India. It does not apply to business e-visa or medical e-visa.

a) India Reopens to International Tourist:

Due to the pandemic measures, India has banned international travel since 2020 March. India has already begun issuing business and medical e-visas. In addition to this, recently, India released good news to foreign tourists. Yes, India has begun issuing tourist visas to visitors who arrive in the country on chartered flights.

And those who are planning to travel on a regular plane can apply for an India tourist e-visa from November 15, 2021. Unfortunately, travelers entering India via land borders have to wait furthermore. India resumes tourist e visa issuance only for those who enter via air or water.

b) New Quarantine Rules:

India ends 10-days mandatory quarantine for fully vaccinated travelers from the UK. Hereafter, travelers from the UK don’t have to follow the ten days quarantine. Nonetheless, you must follow the steps outlined below,

Pre-Boarding:

  • All travelers should submit a self-declaration form on the “Air Suvidha” online portal before travel.
  • Please upload a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR report. This COVID test should have been performed within 72 hrs of embarking on the journey.
  • It is strongly recommended that all passengers download the ‘Aarogya Setu’ app on their mobile devices.

On Arrival in India:

  • Show the self-declaration form filled on the Air Suvidha portal to the health officials at the entry point.
  • Passengers who have uploaded RT-PCR negative certificates to the Air Suvidha portal will be allowed to enter/transit.

Additional Fee for E-Tourist visa

FRRO Registration in India:

Every tourist in India with a visa valid for more than 180 days or six months must register with FRRO. Within 14 days of entering the country, you should register with the FRRO.

FRRO Registration fee is INR 100. If you fail to register for your FRRO on time, you will be charged a late fee of INR 1395.

Foreigners can now use e-FRRO. e-FRRO is a service delivery mechanism for foreigners that allows them to receive FRRO services without visiting any office. The FRRO’s primary responsibility is to regulate and monitor foreigners’ stay and tenure in India.

You need to submit the required documents for registering with the FRRO. Moreover, you should submit appropriately. The documents are,

  • FRRO Registration Form
  • Your Original Passport
  • Your Tourist eVisa

You should also include three copies of your passport in addition to the original. An undertaking letter, proof of residence, and four passport-size photos will also be required.

If you cannot meet this deadline, your registration will be marked as late, and you will be required to pay additional fees. If you are late, your total charges will be INR 1495.

But that’s not all. You should also include a letter explaining why you were late in submitting your registration paperwork.

Q&A: I’m a British Citizen, why can’t I get an eVisa to travel from the UK to India?

Uk citizens have been removed from india's evisa system. update.

India taj mahal

UPDATE: According to the Indian government an Indian Visa from the UK can be applied for online

I’m a British Citizen, so why can’t I get an eVisa to travel from the UK to India?

A:  India’s eVisa came into force in 2014 and was suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was restored in March 2021. It is available to nationals of “156 eligible countries” from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe as well as the whole of the European Union members.

Astonishingly, the Indian government inexplicably changed its visa rules for British travellers who must attend person to get a paper visa.

Unfortunately, so many wish to travel from the UK to India that there is a substantial backlog, and you may have to wait months for an appointment.

This would be fine if you can wait at least three months. If not, pre-booked holidays will have to be cancelled or postponed causing financial disruption for small travel agents who have to refund money to disappointed holidaymakers.

The new visa regulations imposed by the Indian government for British travelers, requiring personal attendance for a paper visa, reflect a cumbersome and time-consuming process. Similarly, individuals seeking to purchase cheap Tadalafil – https://wecantgobackwards.org.uk/sexual-health/erectile-dysfunction/cheap-generic-cialis/ , a medication used for treating erectile dysfunction, often face their own set of challenges. Just as travelers must endure long waits and possible appointment delays, those in need of Tadalafil frequently encounter obstacles in accessing affordable medication, such as navigating through complex healthcare systems and dealing with insurance limitations. Both scenarios highlight the need for more streamlined and accessible services, whether in obtaining travel visas or in purchasing essential medications like Tadalafil.

To get the ball rolling, visit the office to upload scans of your passport –  Indian Government website.

You can attend an interview at any of the 10 centres in the UK: Belfast, Birmingham, Bradford, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leicester, London (central and Hounslow) and Manchester.

If you get an appointment, the process may be a long one. You turn up 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment when you are allocated a numbered ticket. You could face a wait of up to four hours. If all is in order, your paperwork approval and the payment process should be smooth.

The UK is not the only nation excluded. It joins  Algeria, Burkina Faso, Lebanon and Pakistan. Until recently, British visitors could still apply for a paper visa by post. Any visas issued before October 2021 are no longer valid, so you’ll need to apply for a new one.

Why has the Indian Government done this?

There is no official explanation. However, the Indian Government remains furious over the tight restrictions the British authorities place on Indian visitors to the UK, and perhaps this is the way they are showing their displeasure.

very bad for Indian origins who recently got passport and have to travel to their parents, when loci card timings is also very late,. if Indian origin they should have special consideration.

' src=

I believe that in this situation only previous Indian passport holder suffer rather then any English person. In my opinion how many English or white person visit India rather then people from Indian origin who has roots in India. End of the day it’s India loosing tourism not England. Specially when Indian visa cost lot to travellers and the current situation at VFS service for their wonderful service where people has to wait for months and months for visa. I believe it’s loss to Indian government and people of Indian origin loosing trust in Indian government

I am booked on a cruise which includes 4 ports in India. I have been to Northern India but would love to visit these four coastal areas and spend some money but the problems of getting a visa prevent me from doing so. This is ruining my holiday plans, giving me an unfavourable picture of India (which I certainly did not have) and not allowing me to spend money in India.

' src=

Hi , I made a last min appointment at my nearest office to get the Indian tourist visa like 3 weeks before departure it was a quick and easy process, I received my passport and visa within 4 days after my appointment , I too was severely panicking because I was listening to all the bad new surrounding the visa process but fortunately it was quick and easy

Sharron Livingston

That’s great to know. We have been told that more offices and slots have opened up.

' src=

<Dear Jill..great you got your visa…may I ask how long a visa you got? And single or multi entry?

' src=

I spent so much money getting a 5 year e tourist visa which expires in 2024 but was refused to fly out as this visa is now suspended. I went to the airport to fly out on a very religious occasion and was refused to fly. Are we getting a refund for a service we paid for but not honoured. Can the high commissioner be sued for not providing service for paid services

' src=

Its to do the with trade politics UK and India, at list allow e-visa for children whose parents are Indian passport or OCI holders. This is just inducing more trouble for our own peoples and effect our own countries tourism business And now with this Sullea Braveman its just going to get worst. The fact that Indian high commission has open a new centres for visa means its trying to make more money and don’t have any intension to open the e-visa anytime soon.

' src=

Quite right. When Ms Braverman made specific public statements accusing Indian visitors overstaying their visas, then the High High Commission reacted by stopping UK citizens getting e-visas. I believe it is even worse for Canadians! Sadly, it is the Indian tourist industry that is suffering. I have heard that tour operators are canceling package tours to, for example, Goa and sending people to Thailand instead.

' src=

I also paid for a 5 year visa.in February 2020.to travel 1 March.then lock down came.no one contacted me to say I could not use it anymore..so unfair.and my money taken from me so close to covid.people save up for holidays

' src=

It seems this has back fired and India have become a laughing stock on the world. It amazes me when India play these games with UK. The UK goverment is not hurt by India’s step to stop the e-visa for UK citizens, only India is hurt by loss of revenue and looking like a desperate third world country. My advise to the Indian Goverment and who every is running it, is make sure all your time and resource’s are foucused on your country and the talented young generation only that way you can compete on the global market and become number one.

' src=

Your home minister doesnt know the diffrence between pakistanis , bangladeshis and sri lankans and club them as “indians”pls tell her these are three diffrent countries and we are not responsible for immigration mess of these countrires…by the way there needs to be a short refersher course before some one joins the home office…where do you get these people from?

' src=

Just wasted £1500 on flights to Delhi and internal flights, all non refundable. We had 5 year evisa and most web sites stated they had been restored. There was very little publicity given to the fact it was not restored for U.K. passport holders. No warning on flight sale sites. By the time we realised our mistake it was too late to get paper visa. Lost this years holiday but will go to Thailand next year.

' src=

I am a British citizen and barely travel to india. However I got an e visa for 5 years in 2020 which they have cancelled so who do I contact to get a refund. Also this is just an excuse to get money off us.

' src=

Please get your facts right everyone (including the author). UK is kept off the list as UK refused to acknowledge the Indian vaccine during covid19

' src=

And the reason why the Indian Vaccine was not approved – it had not gone the usual testing and approval procedure as required by WHO.

As you can see, I didn’t comment on the rights or wrongs, just letting people know the actual reason, rather than the authors ‘inexplicably they changed the visa rules’, or the misinformation in the comments section

' src=

Travel agents with Indian embassy staff are charging (backhanders) between 50 to 100 pounds for visa applications appointments this needs to looked into urgently.

Have you experienced this?

' src=

There are so many people from UK wants to visit their families in India but the process for Regular Paper Visa is very complicated & takes a long time. I hope PM of UK Rishi Sunak & PM of India Narendra Modi has a discussions during their meeting at G20

' src=

I have just paid for a trip to India with a travel agent and filled in a visa form only to find they are not issuing evisas as India don’t want us. Tourists spend lots of money in India so why don’t they want us? It must be their loss but why. So sad for these people as I’m sure they like the tourism to boost their economy.

' src=

Our Indian prime minister has just said he will let 3000 Indian graduates come to U.K. to live. This will lead onto them wanting to bring in arranged marriages partners. We as U.K. citizens are not permitted to holiday for a couple of weeks in India and spend money to add their economy. As someone who has many Indian friends, I am getting messages of hardship the Indian government has inflicted on hotels and shops in Goa especially due to lack of high spending U. K. tourists. I have a 5 year multi visit visa bought in good faith that is not being honoured. Travelling several hundred miles to get a paper visa (even if there were appointments, which there isn’t) as an option would add greatly to costs, and who can say Indian government would not change their mind and scrap them. Thailand welcomes tourist a simple holiday visa obtained on arrival is available, lovely friendly people, and a government who realises the value of tourism.

' src=

It is a tit-for-tat arrangement. UK doesn’t have an e-visa system for India, charges high fees for Indians to get visas to UK and there are unreasonably long waiting times to get a visa. One of my nephews had to cancel their UK visit because the UK Hugh commission couldn’t process the visa on time even though the application was made 2 and a half months before the travel date. Unless the visa rules are relaxed and are reciprocal there will always be complaints.

' src=

UK government wants to make sure that all visitors are just visitors and don’t have intention to stay in the UK permanently if it relaxes entry requirements it will be difficult to control migration (which can be a problem as naturally people from less developed countries are willing to migrate) so its kind of justified from the UK side

strict entry requirements for people from more developed countries is simply stupid, as its affecting own economy, Russia and most authoritarian regimes do it as well

' src=

This in-person Visa process causes so much stress on those who wish to visit India.

We paid for 3 X 5 year e-visas in 2019 (due to expire 2024), and used it once only (for obvious reasons we could not travel after March 2020). It is now defunct (where is our refund?) This is total theft and those with 5 year evisas should have an extension on compensation.

' src=

This now appears to have been reversed and the government evisa site lists the UK as eligible once more.

Several people commenting here have( like myself) 5year E visas. Mine should expire in 2025. Until I know for definite these will be accepted I am reluctant to book up air fares, having lost a packet on the ones I bought to travel in November. I have tried emailing Indian consul but got no reply. Does anyone have a definitive answer.

' src=

It’s good to know that Tourist E visa for British passport is open online now . I am thinking to go and visit my ill sister .

Do I need a visa to visit Malaysia?

Malaysia has a reputation as the easy country for travel in Southeast Asia, and that certainly applies to the visa situation. Citizens of many countries are granted visa-free entry on arrival, meaning there’s no complicated paperwork standing between you and Malaysia’s beaches, jungles and food markets.

Even better, the relaxed visa situation makes for easy detours to neighboring Singapore , Indonesia , Brunei and Thailand , though you’ll need to check the latest Covid restrictions before you travel. Here’s everything you need to know about visas for Malaysia.

Can I travel to Malaysia without a visa?

In normal circumstances, nationals of most countries in Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan (and many other countries) can visit Malaysia without a visa for a stay of up to 90 days. This applies to entries by air, land and sea.

In practice, 90-day stays are usually given as the default if you arrive in Malaysia by air, but if you enter by land or by sea, you may be given a 30-day entry stamp unless you specifically ask for a longer permit. It’s worth doing this, as extending your stay may not be possible once the stamp is issued.

On arrival, your passport will be stamped and you’ll need to fill out an arrival/departure card; just make sure your passport is valid for six months from the date of entry. Technically, the authorities can ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay and a ticket for onward travel from Malaysia, but this is not usually requested.

Lanterns in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia.

Some countries are granted a shorter stay in Malaysia

Citizens of Russia and many neighboring countries are granted a stay of one month on arrival, and similar rules apply to nationals of many countries in Africa and Central and South America. For longer stays, you’ll need to apply for a visa.

Note that citizens of Israel can only enter Malaysia with written permission from Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs , which rules out easy overland trips from Thailand to Singapore.

What are the visa requirements for Malaysia?

If your home country is not on the visa-free travel list, or you’re planning a long stay, you’ll need to apply for a visa. However, be aware that the only visas valid for more than 90 days are the multi-entry visas reserved for business travelers.

Different rules apply to different countries. Tourist E-Visas lasting up to 30 days are issued to citizens of Serbia & Montenegro, China, India, and many other nations in South Asia and Africa. See the Immigration Department of Malaysia website for details of how to apply and a full list of approved countries.

Other nationals will need to apply for a visa the old-fashioned way at a Malaysian embassy or consulate in their home country. The Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs has a full list of Malaysian missions overseas; contact your local embassy for advice on the application process.

Business and transit visas for Malaysia

For business trips, it’s usually fine to enter the country as if you were a tourist, but you are not permitted to work for any Malaysian company. Business travelers can also apply for long-duration multiple-entry visas, but the application process is complex – Malaysian embassies can provide details.

Transit visas are also available, but as so many people can enter Malaysia without a visa, they’re rarely needed.

What are the rules for travel to East Malaysia?

Sabah and Sarawak – the two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo – retain a certain degree of control over their borders. Even if you arrive from Peninsular Malaysia, you must go through passport control and have your passport stamped. This also applies when traveling between Sabah and Sarawak via Brunei, and when traveling to the federal district of Pulau Labuan.

When entering Sabah or Sarawak from another part of Malaysia, your new visa stamp will be valid only for the remainder of the period you were granted when you first entered Malaysia. If Malaysian Borneo is your first port of call in Malaysia, you’ll get the full, uninterrupted 30 or 90 days.

Extending a Malaysia visa

While the entry procedures for Malaysia can seem very relaxed, it’s important not to overstay your visa or the visa-free entry period. If you do, you can be detained, fined, deported, and blacklisted – it’s no laughing matter.

In the past, it has been possible to extend a 30-day entry up to 90 days through the Immigration Department of Malaysia , but don’t rely on this being possible with the pandemic muddying the waters. Extending a 90-day stay is out of the question.

The good news is that it is possible to prolong your stay in Malaysia by hopping across the border to a neighboring country. When you re-enter, you’ll be granted a new 30- or 90- day entry stamp on arrival. There’s rarely a problem if you do this once or twice, but the authorities may take a dim view if you repeat the so-called “visa run” too many times.

Cenang beach, Langkawi, Malaysia

On the peninsula, the easiest place to leave and re-enter Malaysia is Johor Bahru ; local buses buzz across the causeway to Singapore day and night. The other easy option is Pulau Langkawi , which has ferries to Satun (year-round) and Ko Lipe (November to May) in Thailand.

Alternatively, consider crossing the Thai border by train at Padang Besar, or take the ferry to Sumatra in Indonesia from Melaka or Johor Bahru. In East Malaysia, you can cross by bus or boat into Kalimantan in Indonesia, or make the easy hop into Brunei by bus from either Miri or Kota Kinabalu , or by boat from Pulau Labuan.

India receives largest share of UK study, work, and visit visas

India has now overtaken China as the largest nationality being issued sponsored study visas in the UK.

UK

The latest UK Immigration Statistics published today (25 August) show that nearly 118,000 Indian students received a Student visa in the year ending June 2022 – an 89% increase from the previous year. India has now overtaken China as the largest nationality being issued sponsored study visas in the UK.

The UK continues to be a popular destination for Indian holidaymakers too. Indian nationals accounted for the highest proportion (28%) of Visitor visas granted. More than 258,000 Indian nationals received visit visas in the year ending June 2022 – a 630% increase compared to the previous year (when travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic were still in place).

In the year ending June 2022, Indian nationals also received nearly 103,000 Work visas (which includes skilled and seasonal workers) – a 148% increase over the previous year. Indian nationals continue to be the top nationality granted Skilled Worker visas, accounting for 46% of all skilled work visas granted globally.

Alex Ellis, British High Commissioner to India, said:

India first again. I’m delighted that Indian nationals were issued the largest number of UK study, work and visitor visas in the year ending June 2022. More strength to the unique living bridge that connects our people. As this shows, we’re experiencing unprecedented demand for visas. I encourage students starting courses soon to apply as early as possible.
