"Star Trek: Picard" Season 3 has been airing new episodes on Paramount+ every Thursday. With three more episodes coming down the pipeline, that means viewers can expect to clear their schedules for April 6, 13, and 20. And based on what's transpired so far, it seems to be a thrilling conclusion for these characters fans have held dear since they were first introduced in "The Next Generation."

Season 3 alone has been a wild and twisted ride, with shocking reveals and cameos, as well as the ever-present danger from Changelings. And it's arguably the best-reviewed season of the show so far. Many critics have praised the series for being a noteworthy addition to "Star Trek" canon, with Melanie McFarland of Salon writing, "It is not like 'Star Trek: The Next Generation,' in the sense that it mimics a conspiracy thriller as opposed to a philosophically driven space odyssey. But it is 'Star Trek,' and a fitting closer for a team that spent seven seasons between 1987 and 1994 reminding viewers that what makes us extraordinary is our adventurous nature."

The third, and reportedly final, season of the 'Star Trek' spin-off premiered last week

Star Trek: Picard season 3 premiered on Friday (February 17) with Sir Patrick Stewart returning to his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard.

The Star Trek spin-off was first announced back in 2018 with the first season then premiering in 2020, with a second season airing in 2022.

Star Trek: Picard is set in the year 2399, 20 years after Jean-Luc Picard’s last appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). The spin-off first found the character deeply affected by the death of Data and the destruction of the planet Romulus.

“Retired from Starfleet and living on his family’s vineyard, Picard is drawn into a new adventure when he is visited by an apparent daughter of Data, one of several new synthetic beings, or ‘synths’,” reads a synopsis.

The second season then reunited Picard with The Next Generation ’s Q (John de Lancie) and Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) before they journeyed back to the year 2024 to adjust the timeline.

Season three sees the return of more iconic Star Trek: The Next Generation actors with Michael Dorn as Worf, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher and LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge joining the series. Brent Spiner, Marina Sirtis and Wil Wheaton – who previously guest-starred on Picard – also return for the final season while newcomer Amanda Plummer debuts as big bad Vadic.

Who is in the Star Trek: Picard season 3 cast?

As soon as Picard was initially announced, Star Trek fans wondered whether it would present an opportunity for the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast to reunite. Brent Spiner returned as Altan Soong and Adam Soong, along with reprising his role as Data.

In season 3, the entire Star Trek: The Next Generation cast is back together again in a reunion for the ages.

There was a bit of controversy when Wil Wheaton wasn’t announced as part of the TNG reunion. Wheaton, who played Dr. Crusher’s son Wesley Crusher, was a big part of the series in its early seasons. Wheaton currently hosts the Ready Room aftershow and remained mum about being left out until the Picard season 2 finale revealed that Wesley was back in his role as the Traveler, picking up where his character left off in his final TNG appearance.

There’s no official synopsis for Star Trek: Picard season 3 just yet, but it’s safe to say that the events of Star Trek: Picard season 2 will trickle down into the final season. In season 2, Star Trek villain Q (John De Lancie) returned to wreak havoc with the timeline.

Now, the second season is complete, and Paramount has already announced the cast, a release date, and even an official trailer for season three. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming season three of Picard.

Picard season 3: What to expect

The first season of Star Trek: Picard dealt with two events that were actually holdovers from different Star Trek films in the past: Data's death in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis (Picard struggles with this throughout the first season), and the destruction of Romulus in 2009's Star Trek (which was used to introduce the synthetic humans that helped prevent the rescue of Romulan refugees and ultimately set the stage for Picard to resign from Star Fleet). The synths are subject to a ban, and Picard is pushed to help them because of two synthetic twins that are related to his old friend Data.

Spoiler alert: This all culminates in Picard finding the home of Data's original creator and himself becoming a synthetic at the end of season one to prevent his own death.

This brings us to where we last left Picard - blasting off on the ship La Sirena with a new makeshift crew, heading toward whatever new adventure awaits. The second season starts with Picard transported to the year 2024 along with some of his old friends from Star Trek: The Next Generation series (such as Jerri Ryan’s Seven of Nine and Michelle Hurd’s Raffi Musiker). Picard and friends must discover what the omnipotent Q (John De Lancie) has done to change the timeline that has created a xenophobic version of Starfleet - the Confederation of Earth - which is out to destroy all aliens.

The first teaser for season three sees him rummaging through his old Star Trek: The Next Generation gear, and then we see him and his old partner Riker (Jonathan Frakes), standing side by side, pointing phasers at someone. The teaser also promises more returning characters in season three such as Brent Spinner as Data and Levar Burton as Geordi La Forge. The official trailer for season three is also vague on plot details, but it does show a new ship: The USS Titan, commanded by Captain William T. Riker. We also see Dr. Crusher fighting off masked enemies with a rifle, and a Federation building exploding.

A release date for Star Trek: Picard season three is set for 16 February 2023.

Keep in mind the production and filming of seasons two and three all began simultaneously in 2020. The second season of Star Trek: Picard premiered in March 2022 - two years after season one ended - while season three is releasing in early 2023. Jonathan Frakes and Terry Matalas are directing the final season, with 12 Monkeys creator Terry Matalas stepping in as showrunner for the season.

Picard season 3: Where to stream

The third season isn't yet available. Below is where you'll likely be able to stream it when it does release.

The second season of Picard took Discovery's Thursday timeslot on Paramount+ . It premiered in March 2022 and is still airing. The third season hasn't yet premiered but will obviously be a Paramount+ exclusive.

Amazon Prime Video is Picard's home in the UK, with new episodes airing a day later starting on 4 March 2022. One has to assume season three will also come to Prime Video in the UK, but it's not confirmed.

In Canada, season two is available on Crave. We suspect season three will also be available via Crave once it premieres in early 2023.

Picard season 3: Trailers

One official trailer is available for the new season -- below. It shows Patrick Stewart back for a final adventure, paired with his original crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation. We see LeVar Burton's Geordi La Forge, Michael Dorn’s Worf, Gates McFadden's Dr. Beverly Crusher, and Marina Sirti'’ Deanna Troi. Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner also return to the series, alongside Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd.

Two other teaser trailers have been released for the third season. You can watch them both below, to get a look at a few returning cast members from The Next Generation.

The trailer above debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, while the one below came out a little earlier in 2022.

Both confirm that we're going to see some familiar faces in the last season of Picard.

Star Trek: Picard : 7 Things To Know About the Final Season From the Cast and Showrunner

The next generation is back to steer the paramount+ sci-fi series' last season into dock. the shows' star patrick stewart and more cast members along with showrunner terry matalas offer insights into season 3 and what fans may find beyond its final frontier..

Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) is about to embark on his final mission in the third season of Pararmount+’s Star Trek: Picard . Of course, never say never when it comes to Stewart reprising his role or, indeed, the rest of his Star Trek: The Next Generation castmates finding a place a in Star Trek ‘s future. You need only look at bonus features on the Blu-ray releases of The Next Generation to see the group wrestling with notions of both retirement and continuing.

Those same concerns may become text in Picard ‘s final 10-episode run. As announced when the program was still streaming episodes of the second season, the majority of Stewart’s TNG shipmates – Jonathan Frakes , Brent Spiner , LeVar Burton , Marina Sirtis , Michael Dorn , and Gates McFadden – return as their classic characters (mostly). The intent of the season: to give the group the proper send-off they never quite received in the Next Generation ’s feature film series.

Nevertheless, Picard ’s final season acknowledges the gap of years between their last film, Star Trek: Nemesis , and now; in fact, that distance has been a constant in the show’s various storylines. And if you haven’t been keeping up, but want to see the last mission of the Next Generation crew, here are a few things we were able to learn from the cast and showrunner Terry Matalas about Picard ‘s third season.

1. It’s Set in the 25th Century

Although Picard always took place in the last years of the 24th century – the era first explored in TNG and continued in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Lower Decks – the third season proudly announces itself as entering a new century. To TNG faithful, the century shift should offer a sense of momentum and reaffirm Star Trek ‘s commitment to setting out further in its own fictional history and future while Star Trek: Discovery tells stories in its far removed future and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seeks out new life in the original Star Trek ‘s 23rd century.

At the Television Critics Association winter press tour in January, Trek universe executive producer Alex Kurtzman suggested employing the various time periods allows Trek to grow while also holding onto its core ideals.

“It’s still always about [ Star Trek creator Gene] Roddenberry’s vision of optimism,” he said. “[But] you meet different crews who face different situations.”

2. The Ship Featured Is U.S.S. Titan and Its Captain Is Unmissable

One new crew viewers will meet in Picard ‘s third season is the complement of the U.S.S. Titan . The ship was first referenced in Nemesis as Captain Riker’s (Frakes) first command following a 10–12 year stint as Picard’s first officer. He has also been seen taking the ship out for missions on Lower Decks and the first season of Picard .

But the ship will be different this time around. Photographed with cooler color temperatures and featuring none of the famous carpeting adorning TNG ‘s Enterprise , the steeler vision of the ship also reflects the sterner disposition of Captain Shaw (Todd Stashwick), its less-than-approving commanding officer. When speaking with Rotten Tomatoes, Stashwick joked that Shaw is “barely noticeable.”

“Fans want to see new things with characters that they love,” he continued. “He certainly is new. The way he treats them, we really haven’t seen that before; that sort of irreverence. That sort of passive aggression. I think they’re going to love it.”

As an ongoing character for the season, Stashwick said Shaw will get to “poke at their whole legacy” and that, eventually, fans will enjoy the character, who gets to be a critic of the Next Generation . Of course, it remains to be seen if that enjoyment will be direct or in a “love-to-hate” manner.

Despite Shaw presenting the ship as an icier environment for the TNG gang, there will be one familiar face aboard the Titan : Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). Although the topic of her name – an aspect of the character going right back to her earliest Voyager days – continues to be a source of conflict for her.

“It’s very deep-rooted personal thing for Seven, and it took a long time for her to accept being [Seven versus ‘Seven of Nine’],” Ryan said. As fans who have seen the season 3 trailers know, Seven is finally in a Starfleet uniform, but despite its utopian ideals, she will “be butting heads with somebody else who doesn’t want that to be her name and wants this [her human name] to be her name.”

Ryan added it will be “frustrating for her” to once again tackle the issue of her name when “she has finally embraced it and accepted herself.”

3. Echoes of “All Good Things…” Are Inevitable, But Not Necessarily Intentional

Reuniting the TNG cast 20-or-so years after Nemesis will undoubtedly put the group’s TV finale, “All Good Things…,” into the minds of fans. The Next Generation two-hour closer sees Picard experiencing a possible future some 20 years ahead. His crew has scattered, some are estranged, and Picard himself has retired to the family winery in France. Naturally enough, Picard , as a whole, features some similarities to “All Good Things …,” but Matalas maintained direct thematic connections are not intended, although they may still occur.

“We did look at it,” he said. “It’s the greatest television finale of all time, and it is a proper send-off to Star Trek: The Next Generation . This [season] is a send-off to them now, post feature films and looking at them decades later.”

For McFadden, whose ultimate future may feature a few more ties to the one seen in “All Good Things…,” added, “I loved the way it was dealt with this time because all of our characters have such a huge history, both as people, the actors, and as the characters.”

That history matters in either vision of the future, but where “All Good Things…” reverted to TNG ’s status quo – something largely unchanged in the Next Generation feature films as well –McFadden felt Matalas and Picard ’s overall tendency for character examination opened a “new world of exploration, of conflict in our characters, and the loneliness and the vulnerabilities and the humanity of our characters.”

At the TCA press conference, Stewart echoed her comment, wishing “more of those elements with Beverly could’ve been touched on earlier.”

Burton noted the life of his character, Geordi LaForge, diverts “significantly” from the one Picard glimpsed in the TNG finale. But one commonality does exist: “I’m really, really pleased that Geordi has kids and that we see him as a father. That was hugely attractive to me, and I thought really a satisfying arc for him,” he explained.

The one definitely intentional call-back to TNG ’s final mission log, the names of Geordi’s daughters, Alandra and Sidney, were pulled directly from a scene in “All Good Things …,” Matalas added.

“I thank Terry Matalas for that,” Burton continued. “He agreed with me that it was important to right what I considered a great injustice done to Geordi in terms of his inability to form healthy and lasting relationships with human beings [during The Next Generation ]. And so he addressed that right away, right off the bat, and I’m really grateful.”

4. Picard and Riker Get To Have an Informal Adventure

One of the more fun elements of the season is a chance to see Picard and Riker pal around on an adventure while no longer being tied to the rigid Starfleet command structure.

“That provided us with a new starting point obviously, but also the opportunity for a new type of behavior since the hierarchy of the [Horatio] Hornblower military setup that Roddenberry set was not there,” Frakes said of the storyline. “We were there together as peers, if you will, or brothers.”

He also thanked Matalas for pitching a “Butch-and-Sundance type of thing” to him and Stewart as an opening adventure for the season. And, as viewers will quickly see, the informality between the two characters pays dividends.

5. Raffi Gets Back To One

Although the second season of Picard wrapped up the stories of nearly all its supporting characters, Michelle Hurd ’s Raffi carries on as a major part of the story. Introduced as Picard’s attaché at the time of the Romulan relief effort and as a capable intelligence officer, Raffi’s more obsessive traits saw her booted from Starfleet by the time Picard ’s first season began. Across the two previous seasons, though, she returned to the fold and now returns to gathering intelligence. In Hurd’s estimation, it is the character’s best destiny.

“This is what she did before she was in Starfleet. She’s a master spy,” the actor said.

When viewers first met Raffi, she was quite critical of some Starfleet actions and its politics, but according to Hurd, “Starfleet was always this force that kept her grounded, kept her sober, because it was a place for her to be and she had a job.”

As the season begins, Raffi is at the helm of the starship La Sirena , formerly owned by departed Picard character Cristobal Rios ( Santiago Cabrera ), and “given free rein [aboard that ship].” Once again working as an intelligence agent, she’s “able to really use the skills that she’s always had.”

“She’s able to navigate and she doesn’t have to deal with anybody else talking in her head,” Hurd continued. “I think it’s just a natural progression.”

Raffi’s continued presence on the series also maintains a level of crossover for Picard with the character holding the banner for the group assembled in its first year, Seven bringing her continued story from Voyager , and Dorn feeling he represents both his time on TNG and his work on Deep Space Nine .

“[The DS9 writers] really delved deeply into [Worf] and into the Klingon Empire, and the stories they came up with were spectacular and it gave him a lot to do,” he said of his time on the third live-action Star Trek spinoff, the first to use serialized storytelling and set itself away from a starship.

As seen in the season 3 trailer, Worf claims to adhere to pacifism at this point in his life, but as Dorn clarified at the TCA press tour in January, “Worf has always been on a journey for who he is” and the teasing comment in the preview is the latest step in that trek.

6. Some Things Never Change

Although modern Trek follows more of the serialized storytelling of DS9 and looks more like a feature film each week than its 1980s and 90s TV antecedents, the cast said actually shooting the show feels very much the same from the days on the Paramount lot in the 20th century.

“It certainly felt familiar being together,” Burton explained. “We have acted with one another more than anyone else in our respective careers. We’ve spent hours on soundstages in each other’s company, and plus the nature of our relationships offscreen got deeper over time. And so we were all able to bring that depth [to the characters].”

Also supporting the ongoing TNG atmosphere are several other cameos from established characters and actors. The two revealed so far: Spiner returning as Data’s corrupt brother, Lore, and Daniel Davis as the holographic but sentient construct of Professor James Moriarty. Additionally, Matalas teased in January “there are a few Next Gen –adjacent characters who will return this season, but we’re holding them back until [the episodes] air.”

7. It May Not Be the End

Although this third season Picard is billed as its last, it may not be the end for the characters. Back in January, Stewart told reporters during the show’s TCA press panel that he would consider subsequent appearances after Picard ‘s final episode streams.

“If we can maintain the work we did on seasons one, two, and three, than yes. There is still enormous potential in the narrative. And there are doors left open,” he said.

Kurtzman added at the time that while the show was always envisioned as a three-year mission, “anything is possible.”

When McFadden spoke to us, she expressed her hope that even as Star Trek continues to expand into the 25th century, it still has a place for the TNG cast. “I read all those 10 scripts and I didn’t see it as a send-off as much as we are engaged in the present of the world,” she said. “It’s a new world, things have changed, and there is so much yet to be done.”

“You can do anything you want to do [with Trek ],” added Dorn. “You never know what’s in studios’ minds, but it seems like it’s the right thing [to continue with the characters.]”

Matalas, for his part, suggested more stories set in the new century may happen. For one, Ed Speleers (pictured above), who has appeared in Outlander and Downton Abbey , plays a new character in season 3 of Picard .

“What [this season of Picard ] does feel like is a completion of the Star Trek Next Generation arc. It does feel like a passing of the torch to sort of a ‘next generation.’ I think that these legacy characters should be a part of that [and] I would love nothing more than to see [it happen].”

He continued. “I don’t want to say what happens to Beverly Crusher [as an example], but let’s just say that she has a role in, possibly, the future of the Federation that’s important. And so it is very much an ending and a beginning at the same time.”

And, just as it seemed on those now 10-year-old Blu-ray bonus features, the future of Star Trek and the Next Generation characters is something the cast welcomes if and when the call comes to join Starfleet once more.

How to watch Star Trek: Picard season 3 in the US

Star Trek: Picard season 3 premieres in the U.S. on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 3 a.m. ET. It is streaming exclusively on Paramount Plus .

Picard season 3 recap: What's happened so far

Episode 1: The season began on the SS Eleos, in the 25th century, where Dr. Beverly Crusher and her son Jack were attacked, leading Crusher to send a signal for Jean-Luc Picard. When told to not bring Starfleet into this situation, Picard called up Riker, and the two managed to get the USS Titan-A thanks to Seven of Nine. Picard and Riker board the Eleos to find Dr. Crusher in stasis. Meanwhile, on M'talas Prime, a Starfleet facility is destroyed by a portal device.
Episode 2: A large ship called the Shrike captures the Eleos, and Seven of Nine convinces Capt. Liam Shaw to help the team. The Shrike is captained by a bounty hunter named Vadic who declares Crusher's son Jack to be a wanted war criminal. Picard realizes that Jack is his son, and while Starfleet intelligence officer Raffi Musiker is almost killed by the Ferengi criminal Sneed, Worf saves Musiker, and kills Sneed.
Episode 3: Crusher reveals she kept Jack's lineage secret to protect him from assassination attempts, while the Shrike and the Titan are engaged in combat. Riker takes over the the Titan, and they find out a Changeling on their ship who was sabotaging their chip. Then, another Changeling is found to be responsible for the M'talas Prime incident. Riker and Picard spend the episode disagreeing on how to deal with the Shrike, and Jean-Luc's insistence they attack leads to the Titan taking serious damage — and Riker ordering him off the bridge.
Episode 4: Vadic is revealed to be a Changeling, Riker admits Picard was right all along, Picard and Jack bond and Shaw reveals how his time in Starfleet was effected by that time Picard was assimilated by The Borg. Our heroes manage to to escape and damage the Shrike, and Picard starts to realize he's met Jack before, while Jack starts to experience visions of a post-apocalyptic world and a haunting voice saying "find me."
Episode 5: Jack has visions of himself murdering the crew, Shaw regains control and brings in Starfleet ... who have Picard and Riker arrested. Starfleet's Ro Laren (who had a messy saga involving betraying and returning to Starfleet) is the one to arrest them, and begins to think these Changelings have infiltrated Starfleet at the highest tiers. A Changeling bombs the ship Ro Laren is on, while Worf and Raffi continue their M'talas Prime investigation, which leads to a Vulcan criminal named Krinn, and a duel. Jack is starting to admit something's wrong.

How the Picard Season 3 Soundtrack Unlocks All of Star Trek

For World Music Day, let's look at how Picard's final score stretches across the entire final frontier, from familiar themes to deep sonic cuts.

The music of the Final Frontier is one of the most grounding aspects of the entire Star Trek phenomenon. Rather than sounding overtly futuristic, the musical world Trek has always been the opposite — old-fashioned and classic. When Nicholas Meyer hired James Horner to compose the music for The Wrath of Khan , he asked for a score that was "nautical, but nice." This single phrase perhaps best describes a large swath of famous Star Trek scores; the music is rooted in an antique style, combined with a buoyant sense of optimism. The music of Trek looks forward, partly, by looking back. In real life, Star Trek scores have been played at the commissioning of space shuttles, at least one U.S. Presidential Inauguration , and on March 11, 2024, Jerry Goldsmith's themes from Star Trek: First Contact were played during a ceremony in which Sweden was inducted into NATO.

Sometimes, it seems the classical music of Star Trek is oddly more pervasive in everyday life than Star Trek itself. Yes, there have, of course, been examples of non-classical music in Star Trek ; from Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride," to Enterprise 's "Faith of the Heart," Kirk blasting The Beastie Boys' "Sabotage," and, in 2023, musical theater and pop stylings throughout " Subspace Rhapsody " in Strange New Worlds . But, for almost six decades, classical scores have been the sonic glue binding the Trek universe together. From Original Series composers like Alexander Courage and Sol Kaplan, to Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner in the classic films, to Dennis McCarthy in The Next Generation era, Michael Giacchino 's scores for the Kelvin Universe films, to Jeff Russo in Discovery and Chris Westlake in Lower Decks , Nami Melumad on Strange New Worlds and Prodigy , each Trek score often contains a piece of another. But, perhaps more than any orchestral Star Trek event to date, the soundtrack for Star Trek: Picard Season 3 bridges various eras simultaneously, but also created edgy, new directions for Trek scores that had never been tried before.

The Picard Season 3 score — composed by Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann— is a rosetta stone of nearly all of Star Trek music, ever. While it's somewhat obvious that Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is a direct follow-up to Picard Season 2, a huge thrust of the series is also a coda to the era of The Next Generation TV series and four feature films. So, throughout this score, there are various musical references to the hugely famous main theme from Star Trek: The Next Generation composed by Jerry Goldsmith. But, within this musical cue, there's an Easter egg to 1979. As many fans know, the immortal TNG main theme was actually first composed by Goldsmith for the film Star Trek: The Motion Picture . And while the bombastic march opens that film, and every episode of TNG, a slower more ballatic version of the theme was created for the classic track "The Enterprise ," in which Scotty and Kirk view the newly refitted ship for the first time.

'The Next Generation'

In Picard Season 3, this dreamy arrangement of the TNG/TMP theme is on full display in the back-to-back tracks "Hello, Beautiful" and "Leaving Spacedock," in which Picard and Riker take a shuttle to the U.S.S. Titan -A, and we hear the gentle strings of "The Enterprise " from 1979. However, as this musical moment continues, and Commander Seven takes the Titan out of spacedock, a new musical theme emerges, which showrunner Terry Matalas has called " The Titan Theme, " since it plays in many instances in the series that focus on the scrappy starship itself. And yet, by the end of Picard Season 3, the Titan becomes a new version of the Enterprise . So, when Riker and Picard roll-up on the Titan and hear the TNG/TMP main theme, it's not just a neat Easter egg, the music becomes a foreshadowing element that helps tell the story.

Deep Cuts Reveal Myriad Star Trek Legacies

"The Next Generation"

Just as Beverly Crusher sends Picard a transmission as a myriad codec, the Picard Season 3 soundtrack contains a myriad of references to all sorts of other Star Trek music. Some of these cues are somewhat obvious. The end-credits for the series borrows from the First Contact main themes, first introduced in 1996, while Jeff Russo's arrangement of the TNG main theme, crafted for Picard Season 1 and Season 2, still exists as part of the brief title card at the top of each episode. But, once you start digging into the episode-by-episode tracks, deeper cuts start to reveal themselves, ever so slowly.

In "Old Communicator," ominous woodwinds play as Picard riffles through his stuff, to find his TNG-era red uniform. These notes are reminiscent of Ron Jones' music for " The Best of Both Worlds " in The Next Generation , reminding us of that time Jean-Luc lost a uniform just like this when he was assimilated by the Borg. But, for composers Barton and Wiedmann, this is just the first of many musical cues from the past.

"The Bounty"

When the Titan arrives at the Fleet Museum in the sixth episode, " The Bounty ," we get a track called "Legacies," which has rapid-fire sonic Easter eggs like no other piece of Star Trek music before or since.

As Seven and Jack observe the various ships in the museum, each one gets his own theme; for the Defiant , we hear Dennis McCarthy's main theme for Deep Space Nine , for the movie-era Enterprise -A, an arrangement of the Alexander Courage TOS theme, and as Seven waxes nostalgic about the U.S.S. Voyager , a triumphant and bittersweet rendition of the Jerry Goldsmith main title from Star Trek: Voyager plays. Impressively, these musical cues are packed into three minutes and fifteen seconds, meaning "Legacies," tells the story of four starships, through music, in a very short amount of time.

Did we say four ships? Yes! Because in addition to the Defiant, Enterprise -A, and Voyager , the medley of "Legacies" eventually concludes with Leonard Rosenman's 1986 themes from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . And that's because Jack realizes that the captured Klingon Bird-of-Prey, which Bones christened the H.M.S. Bounty all those years ago, has a cloaking device that the crew of the Titan can use. And so, this wonderful nod to Rosenman's music not only references The Voyage Home , but also moves the present tense of the story forward.

That Cinematic Feeling

A Musical Legacy: Scoring the Final Season of Star Trek: Picard

On the liner notes to Picard Season 3, Terry Matalas specifies that the score for this season was designed to remind fans of the big, epic music from the films. Even though this was a season of a TV series, the sound of Picard Season 3 is cinematic. "I knew early on that Picard Season 3 needed to sound like the great Trek film scores that came before it," Matalas writes in the liner notes. "[When] I was five…the track 'The Enterprise ' was imprinted onto my brain."

And so, in collaboration with composers Barton and Wiedemann, Matalas steered the music of Picard Season 3 into a massive tribute to the entirety of previous Star Trek film scores. This was accomplished by the sonic Easter eggs we've just pointed out, but this feeling also exists more broadly throughout the entire soundtrack. The dark track "Dominion" isn't one that contains any sonic Easter eggs, but is unique to this soundtrack, as is the heroic hero theme for the Titan , heard in "Leaving Spacedock" and throughout the all ten episodes of the season.

But, the brilliance of the Picard Season 3 soundtrack isn't that it simply checks-off various Star Trek musical boxes. Instead, it seamlessly blends the old with the new. In "Legacy and the Future," longtime fans will be reminded of Denis McCarthy's tender music from 1994's Star Trek Generations , but as the track builds, we move from the immortal Alexander Courage fanfare, and into the new , future-facing music created for the Titan , which is destined to become Captain Seven's ship, the Enterprise-G , boldly headed into the future.

And so, the Picard Season 3 soundtrack isn't just a series of nostalgia hits. Its music allows us to revisit stories from across the whole timeline of Star Trek , but, also, imagine an unfolding new future, full of wonder, hope, and adventure.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 has the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew reunited with the USS Enterprise-D one last time. What originally started as a look at Jean-Luc Picard’s (Sir Patrick Stewart) life has become a nostalgic field trip with the original team. Are we excited? Yes! Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 – Preview Pictures

For the final time, we have preview pictures for Star Trek: Picard . Sadly, these are not the most groundbreaking in terms of a preview. However, it does make sense. The show’s creatives are careful not to spoil what is coming up in the finale episode. It makes sense, but all Star Trek fans are eager to see something. Regardless, there are some fantastic shots of William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Mr Worf (Michael Dorn) and Jean-Luc on the USS Enterprise-D bridge. Only four pictures in total, I am afraid.

We can also see Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) and Mr Data (Brent Spiner) at the front of the bridge, working at their consoles. Doctor Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) seems to have been told to stand next to Worf. Sadly it seems like Crusher has no dedicated station on where to stand. If only the producers had decided to recreate the upgraded Star Trek: Generations bridge. Then there would be an extra set for Crusher. I guess she could sit at the back. Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) assumes her old chair by Picard.

The Ready Room – Preview Clip

Last week’s The Ready Room after show has given us a sneak peek at Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 . We’re thrown back into the action as The Next Generation crew commands the USS Enterprise-D. I question why they returned to Earth, given that a fully-fledged Starfleet armada is just waiting there. However, it does appear that the crew did call for help. Mr Data (Brent Spiner) mentions how emergency hails have gone silent. So maybe we won’t see a giant fleet v fleet scene this week?

Recent Star Trek seasons have had a habit of ending seasons with giant fleets coming together. Many fans have pointed out how this season’s final plot seems similar to other Star Trek shows. Specifically, the fleet’s being taken over. For example, Star Trek: Prodigy recently ended its first season with a fleet battle. Star Trek: Discovery also ended its second season with a rogue fleet. Have people been watching Battlestar Galactica on repeat or something? I joke, of course, but you can see it.

The Borg appears to have been hiding in plain sight—the USS Enterprise-D ventures to Jupiter, where a Borg vessel seems to be hiding. You’ve got to wonder how Starfleet did not detect this beforehand. Though perhaps a transwarp conduit has only recently appeared here or something. I’m sure there will be some technobabble explanation that Star Trek will provide like always. Can we also appreciate how cool it looks to have the Enterprise-D coming out of warp once again? Seriously, it’s a fantastic model of the famous ship.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 marks the end of the Star Trek: Picard series. It’s been a long road, but we’ve finally got there. It’s a bittersweet ending, as the third season finally allowed the show to find its feet. However, I wish it would stop taking jabs at the past two seasons at various points. Regardless of how it goes, this will be a very jam-packed episode. The finale episode of the series has a lot of things to do. It will need to conclude the series, but also the episode and season plot line as well.

Thinking about it, the episode synopsis may hint at some surprise cameos. We know there are some still to come in Star Trek: Picard , it seems. However, who could actually appear? Notice the synopsis says, “crews both old and new”. Could this mean we’re about to get another generation of Star Trek to come to save the day? Seriously, all we need is Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) to show up to help out. She dealt with the Borg well last time.

The year is 2024, and I cannot believe that we're living in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - and not in a good way. Like its 1990s contemporaries, DS9 was set in the 24th century, and so the Federation's utopian ideals were something to aspire to when I was watching as a kid. As Gene Roddenberry had always intended back in the 1960s, Star Trek TV shows present us with a hopeful vision of the future that challenges us to be better. Sometimes these lessons can be clunkily delivered, but other times Star Trek can provide incisive commentary on our times.

"Past Tense", a season 3 two-parter and one of the best Star Trek: DS9 episodes is one such story that incisively comments on the time in which it was written. In "Past Tense", Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) and Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) travel back in time to 2024, where they experience life inside one of Los Angeles' Sanctuary Districts. While writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe had always wanted to tackle the issue of LA's homeless population in DS9 , his choice to set the episode in 2024 has given "Past Tense" a contemporary resonance that reflects how little we've learned .

Time travel is a staple of Star Trek stories, and several time traveling characters have had a significant impact on the Star Trek timeline.

Were Living In The Year And Plot Of Star Trek: DS9s Past Tense

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3, episodes 11 & 12, "Past Tense", Sisko and Bashir are stranded in 2024 in the lead-up to the historic Bell Riots . In Robert Hewitt Wolfe and Ira Steven Behr's dystopian vision of Los Angeles in 2024, the city's unhoused population are held in Sanctuary Districts . The Sanctuary Districts were supposed to give Los Angeles' homeless people a roof over their heads while city representatives helped to find them employment and permanent housing. While theoretically a good idea, the increasing number of homeless people in LA has led to overcrowding of the Sanctuary Districts.

...in theory, one of Star Trek: DS9 's Sanctuary Districts could work, but "Past Tense" makes the astute point that such initiatives are at the mercy of much larger external factors.

Six years ago, I used to run movie nights in a homeless shelter in London that gave people experiencing homelessness their own room and board. As well as providing accommodation and food, the charity also helped the shelter's residents to secure further education, medical treatment or job opportunities to help them escape the cycle. The movie nights were designed to facilitate discussion among the residents, and I was often moved by how cinema could allow them to discuss their own experiences of homelessness.

So, yes, in theory, one of Star Trek: DS9 's Sanctuary Districts could work, but "Past Tense" makes the astute point that such initiatives are at the mercy of much larger external factors. The charity I volunteered with was reliant on charitable donations and dwindling government funding to do the work. For example, following the 2008 financial crisis, the UK government embarked on swingeing austerity cuts that slashed funding for vital resources like social care at the same time that people lost jobs and needed those initiatives more than ever. Sixteen years and a pandemic later, and life on Earth is eerily similar to DS9 's "Past Tense".

The original pitch for "Past Tense" was entitled "The Cold and Distant Stars", which depicted Sisko as a homeless man in 1994 who had dreams of being commander of a space station. This later factored into the classic DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars" in season 6.

Los Angeles Homelessness Problem Has Got Worse, Not Better Since DS9

30 years ago, when Robert Hewitt Wolfe and Star Trek: DS9 showunner Ira Steven Behr were conceiving "Past Tense", a Los Angeles Times front page headline announced: "Homeless Camp Weighed In L.A. Industrial Area" . The city's proposal was criticized as " nothing but a prison " by Alice Callaghan, director of social service center Las Familias del Pueblo. I'm struck by the eerie similarities between Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe's dehumanizing dystopia and contemporary Los Angeles and so was Alexander Siddig, who reflected on "Past Tense" in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion :

"I hadn't realized the country was so depressed as to need it, but the episode was almost a cinematic version of that statement by the L.A. Council. "

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3, episode 11, "Past Tense, Part I" aired on January 8th, 1995. Just over five months earlier, a Los Angeles Times report estimated that on any given night there were " between 43,233 and 77,143 people who are homeless " in LA County. 30 years later, and the figure for Los Angeles County is at the extreme end of the 1994 LA Times report, with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority estimating in January this year that 75,518 people are experiencing homelessness in the county. On top of this, there are an estimated 46,260 people homeless in Los Angeles city.

1 Star Trek: DS9 Episode Was So Complex That Every Writer Worked On It

It takes a village to bring Star Trek to life, but one particularly difficult episode of Deep Space Nine season 3 was truly a team effort.

Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Returned To DS9s Past Tense

In Star Trek: Picard season 2 , Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the crew of the La Sirena travel back in time to 2024 to foil the plotting of Q (John de Lancie). While never explicitly confirmed in the dialog, Commander Rafaela Musiker (Michelle Hurd) finds herself in a homeless village that bears similarities to the Sanctuary District from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . In Picard season 2, episode 3, "Assimilation", Raffi had a similarly disillusioned perspective on 2024 as Sisko and Bashir in DS9 , observing:

"You know, I've never been able to understand how a society could exist with so many contradictions and not collapse sooner than it did."

It was depressing to watch Star Trek: Picard season 2 because the near-future of 2024 with its large homeless villages and violent immigration officers felt very close to home. Rather than the dystopian sci-fi of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's "Past Tense", the social inequality and poverty in Picard season 2 felt less like Star Trek and more like a documentary . However, while we may have failed to learn the lessons of DS9 's "Past Tense" over the past three decades, both it and the plot of Picard season 2 prove that we still have an opportunity to turn things around for the better.

Why Were So Far From Star Treks Social Utopia

"it's not that they don't give a damn, doctor. it's that they've given up.".

Although it was written 30 years ago, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3, episode 11, "Past Tense, Part I" has a moment that seems to sum up our own experiences in 2024. When Sisko tells Bashir that people in the 2020s have " given up ", it's hard not to feel like Avery Brooks is talking about us . In the past four years, we've endured the COVID-19 pandemic, devastating conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine, and a massive cost of living crisis. In the real-world, the COVID pandemic in 2020 led the UK government to implement several measures to protect the country's homeless population (via Crisis ) from Coronavirus. This just goes to show that, in the right circumstances, governments can rethink their policies on their unhoused citizens and how they solve the root causes of homelessness. We just need to build on that initiative so it's the rule rather than the exception.

Star Trek: Picard season 2's Europa mission brought back a mysterious microorganism that aided humanity in solving the climate crisis. NASA's real-life Europa mission will launch in October this year, in an attempt to find out if Jupiter's moon could support life. Both the Bell Riots in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the Europa mission in Star Trek: Picard season 2 helped to pave the way for the utopian ideals of Starfleet and the Federation. Hopefully, in the real world, the findings of the Europa mission and a more holistic approach to homelessness can build our own more utopian future.

Despite its immense potential, the Star Trek franchise seems to have forgotten about its most infamous pleasure planet. Although Star Trek is mainly about space exploration and scientific discovery, all Star Trek TV shows have had an episode where the crew is allowed to blow off steam, and no shore leave planet has become more famous in the franchise than Risa . First introduced in the Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3 episode, "Captain's Holiday," Risa has become synonymous with vacation and tourism, although it was only included in a handful of episodes across multiple series.

Over about four episodes, TNG and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine showed the planet's status as a popular shore leave destination in the 24th century, with characters like Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) , or Worf (Michael Dorn) and Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) vacationing there. Star Trek: Enterprise also fleshed out Risa's backstory, showing that it had once been more inhospitable before the native Risians had terraformed their planet into a paradise with advanced technology. Risa had enormous potential for Star Trek , but in recent projects, the franchise seems to have sidelined it.

Star Trek's timeline spans a thousand years of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, with alternate realities and time travel galore.

Star Trek Has Forgotten Its Infamous Pleasure Planet Risa

Risa hasn't appeared in star trek for ages.

Aside from a brief appearance in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, modern Star Trek has completely forgotten about Risa as a setting for any of its episodes. The planet has been mentioned once or twice in episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Picard , and Discovery provided two more concrete references to it. These took the form of briefly showing the Mirror Universe Risa in Discovery season 3's "Terra Firma, Part 2" and the character of Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) , a native Risian, in season 4.

Although the Enterprise episodes that depicted Risa technically aired after DS9 , the events in them took place chronologically over a century before.

However, no Star Trek main character has been shown visiting the planet since Worf and Dax vacationed there in DS9 's "Let He Who Is Without Sin..." Modern Star Trek Could Actually Make Risa More Inviting Than Ever

The franchise has better capabilities to depict risa than before.

Thanks to CGI technology and special effects abilities in 2024, newer Star Trek shows could flesh out Risa in ways that weren't possible in the 1990s. The recent slate of Star Trek streaming shows has adopted technology called the AR wall, which consists of large LED screens that allow shows to create enhanced visuals, letting actors see their surroundings unlike green screens, and building more interactive environments without the need to shoot on location. Using the AR wall to depict Risa would be a chance to make the planet feel more real .

While the visuals in the 90s-era Star Trek shows were cutting edge at the time, the production team often relied on 2D matte paintings for wide shots, and rarely shot on location, instead shooting on sound stages and artificial environments. This didn't help make Risa feel particularly fleshed out, but with bigger budgets and better technology like the AR wall, the possibilities for the planet in modern Star Trek are endless . If the franchise brought Risa back, it could finally depict the planet in all its glory.
