There’s no better way to kick off our new 2023-2024 South America season of sailings than with a 16-night journey from Los Angeles down the coast of Mexico, Central America, and South America to Valparaiso, Chile. This exciting itinerary includes stops in some of the most exciting cities such as Cabo San Lucas, Mexico: Puntarenas, Costa Rica; and there’s an overnight stay in Lima, Peru, where you’ll have the opportunity to visit the mysterious ruins of Machu Picchu. Our new 2023 and 2024 sailings in South America feature the return of Celebrity Eclipse® to this dynamic corner of the world. No matter which you choose, your expedition in South America, will visit some of the most dynamic cities on the continent. There’s so much to experience. Marvel at the majestic Fjords of Chile. Swirl, sip, and savor the wines of Casablanca Valley in Valparaiso. Be mesmerized by performances of graceful Tango dancers and skilled gauchos in Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires Argentina Glazers

Land of the Glaciers

The thrills begin the moment you arrive in Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site nearly half of which ancient glaciers cover. An exhilarating ascent of Mount Frias in a 4x4 vehicle introduces the park’s unimaginable grandeur and prepares you for the next day’s options. You might cruise across turquoise Lago Rico for a riveting, up-close view of the jagged-peaked Perito Moreno Glacier. Or if you’re feeling more intrepid, trek across the glacial landscape with a wilderness guide and really experience the blue-hued ice mass.

  • 1 night in Buenos Aires
  • 2 nights in El Calafate
  • Excursion up Mount Frias in a 4x4 vehicle
  • Cruise to Perito Moreno Glacier for close-up sightseeing and the option of walking across the glacier

Lima Peru Galapagos

Wild Wonders of the Galapagos

Follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin by exploring the Galápagos, a collection of islands with species not found anywhere else. Observing enormous Galápagos tortoises in the wild highlands and at the Darwin Research Center helps to demonstrate how that species has adapted to the islands to better survive. Hiking, snorkeling and boating excursions offer close-up views of other endemic animals, including sea lions, marine iguanas, flamingos and the famed finches about which Darwin theorized. Nature rules in the Galápagos and it can be eye-opening to experience firsthand.

  • 3 nights in the Galápagos Islands at the Finch Hotel or similar
  • Economy-class flights per the itinerary
  • All meals per the itinerary
  • Hiking, snorkeling, boating and sightseeing per the itinerary
  • Galápagos National Park naturalist guide while in the Galápagos

Rio De Janeiro Brazil Museum

A Passion for Rio

It’s hard not to fall in love with Rio, especially when this irrepressible city is presented so beautifully. What better introduction than seeing the highlights from every conceivable angle, including from atop Sugarloaf Mountain, which you reach via cable car. Rio is synonymous with the uber-exuberant festival Carnival, and a behind-the-scenes look divulges exactly how the outlandish floats and lavish costumes are made. Even a taste of Rio leaves you wanting more, so an entire day is devoted to independent exploration.

  • 3 nights in Rio de Janeiro
  • 2 half-day tours that include Sugarloaf Mountain, the São Bento Monastery and the Museum of Tomorrow
  • Select Meals

Santiago Chile City Wine

Chilean Wonders & Wine

Savor characteristic Chilean wines and drink in the country’s wondrous natural beauty. The foothills on the outskirts of Santiago contribute to an inland terroir that produces enviable wines, as a tasting at Vina Santa Rita confirms. With the towering Andes as a backdrop, the sky-high ski resort Portillo offers spectacular views. The watershed Battle of Chacabuco was fought nearby, leading to Chile’s independence. Colonial architecture clings to the steep hills of Valparaiso, a lovely seaport that earned a UNESCO World Heritage designation for its 19th-century urban landscape.

  • 3 nights in Santiago
  • Tour and tasting at Santa Rita Vineyard or similar
  • Lunch at the historic Restaurant Doña Paula
  • Tour of Portillo ski resort area in the Andes

ANTARCTICA & SOUTH AMERICA CRUISES

Traverse Antarctica and South America on Seabourn's ultra-luxury ships. Explore countries and cultures that touch your curiousity and heart. Seabourn offers travelers a wide variety of exciting adventures and discoveries in both regions.

Antarctica & South America Cruise Destinations

Antarctica With Seabourn

Antarctica — It lay undetected for most of recorded time, beyond the margins of the known world. Even after someone stumbled on it, its isolation and the necessary rigors of the journey kept all but the most intrepid away. Those who did return ran short of superlatives to describe its magnificence. We go to Antarctica in a style undreamed by those ardent early pioneers. But what awaits us there — the snowy, sentinel mountain ranges, teeming penguin colonies and stately parades of monumental icebergs; the sight of an albatross effortlessly gliding across an ink-blue sea and the unexpected rainbow of mist arising from a breaching whale — all of that is virtually unchanged from the time before its discovery.

That is the magic of Antarctica, its timeless majesty and pristine beauty. Those who have seen it claim it’s impossible to adequately describe, that you must go yourself. We believe that is an excellent suggestion, and one we can assist travelers in accomplishing. Guests will be accompanied by a veteran Expedition Team, who in many cases have made Antarctica the focus of their life’s work. They’ll tell you what they know, point out what they think you ought to see, and step ashore with you to share the profound experience of adventure and discovery that brings them back year after year.

When you cruise with Seabourn, we promise a voyage that is nothing short of magical. See penguins, whales and other diverse wildlife, kayak around icebergs and massive glaciers, hike along the majestic continent and see the wonders of Antarctica up close.

Each cruise to Antarctica includes the following exclusive amenities and activities designed to enhance every moment:

  • Inclusive zodiac tours and landings*
  • Digital photography workshops
  • Complimentary Seabourn expedition-grade parka and day pack
  • Opportunities for frequent wildlife sightings from the ship and on shore
  • Onboard Expedition team providing narration and insight to all aspects of the experience
  • Inspiring Enrichment Program and special guest speakers on board

*Final itineraries are subject to weather, ice and other conditions and subject to change.

South America With Seabourn

Seabourn’s ultra-luxury cruises to South America unveil the amazing variety of cultural, historical and natural wonders to be found there. Vibrant, modern cities with picturesque, colonial hearts; long-lost monuments of vanished civilizations, and landscapes of breathtaking beauty. Our voyages to South America lets cruisers survey the colorful colonial cities of Brazil, the broad golden beaches, the dramatic Chilean fjords and the lush forests of the Amazon basin. Continue cruising south to experience the untouched, diverse wildlife of Antarctica.

Enjoy a new perspective of the Amazon on our luxury South America Cruise by getting up close and personal via Zodiac or kayak as part of our optional Ventures by Seabourn shore excursion program.

A few of the highlights you will experience include:

  • With its stunning setting and joyous lust for life make  Rio De Janiero  a cidade maravilhosa, "marvelous city." Ipanema, Copacabana, samba — the words alone conjure Brazilian paradise.
  • Buenos Aires  is one of the most popular destinations on our luxury cruise to South America. This cosmopolitan city boasts broad, tree-shaded boulevards, beautiful residential districts, fountains, and 20th-century high-rise buildings.
  • Manaus , the largest port on the  Amazon , teems with watercraft of all sorts and the Teatro Amazonas opera house is a restored relic of the Rubber Boom.
  • Lima , Peru’s capital, is one of the most important cities in the Americas. Its Spanish Colonial heritage is combined with amazing Inca artifacts and renowned cuisine.

Latin America: seven must-see sites

Wondering where to see the remains of the Pre-Colombian civilisations, where to enjoy an unforgettable sea-going experience, where to dive in the middle of the jungle or where to see glaciers? This is a continent of many contrasts, an invitation to get away from it all with an array of activities to try and unmissable sites to see. Our selection:

3 reasons to head for Latin America

south america luxury cruises

Meet the local populations

In Brazil, the Indians skillfully navigate their dugout canoes over the waters of the Amazon. They know their way around these remote locations, where they live in a state of complete autarky with profound respect for the natural world. In Chile, indigenous tribes such as the Mapuche and the Aymara are still very much present. Marked by successive waves of European immigration, Chile is now very multicultural , with myriad customs and very rich folklore. Take a trip to the local market to immerse yourself in this traditional yet modern culture.

Discover an array of breathtaking sites

With a rich Pre-Colombian past, Latin America has special appeal for travellers looking for escapism and enchanting destinations . Remains such as those at Machu Picchu, Cuzco, Chan Chan and the Nazca Lines have yet to deliver all their secrets so continue to fascinate. And then there is the stunning natural environment, stretching for hundreds of miles and offering a diverse array of landscapes and colours. In Torres del Paine National Park, the glaciers give way to craggy peaks, then snow-topped summits and turquoise lakes. Sail the Chilean fjords and visit spectacular sites where time appears to have stood still. Cape Horn, the Strait of Magellan, Beagle Channel, with the Andes as a backdrop—behold the iconic sites of South America. In Amazonia , along the river to beat all rivers, the jungle pulsates and buzzes with life. Vegetation and water come together in the luxuriant mangrove , stretching as far as the eye can see, right up to the stilt-house villages which it shrouds in its multiple shades of green. Explore really is the word here.

Watch the incredibly rich wildlife...

In the Chilean fjords or in Patagonia , on land, at sea or in the skies, wildlife is everywhere. Admire Magellanic penguins, llamas, dolphins, fur seals, alpacas, condors and cormorans. And when you spot the tail of a humpback whale not far from your boat, you're sure to feel the magic.

Deep in the immense coils of the Amazon, the boto pink river dolphin is always an astonishing site for visitors, while the throngs of  macaws, toucans and scarlet ibis add their vivid colours to the dense branches of the mangrove along the rivers.

Discover the Amazon River in Brazil and French Guiana

Amazonia and its lush natural environment are the ideal destination for adventure. The region is a real patchwork of people and cultures , and the vast green belt of forest along the Amazon River harbours some extraordinary wildlife including caymans, cocoi herons, great egrets and wattled jacana. In French Guiana, the historical remains of the former penal colonies lie just a stone's throw from the ultra-modern Kourou space centre—the launch site of Ariane and the spearhead of the European space programme.

Fly over the Nazca Lines

These prehistoric wonders are still a source of amazement today. The Nazca Lines in Peru, which stretch over a distance of around 50 kilometres, are thought to have been traced more than a thousand years ago. The lines, a series of geometric, human and animal figures , have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1994; the animal shapes are thought to invoke the aid of deities. The large-scale drawings are etched into the dark stone to reveal the lighter coloured earth below. In all, 350forms have been studied to date and no fewer than 50 new geoglyphs were unearthed in 2018. Flying over the lines is an extraordinary experience!

Admire Machu Picchu

One of the most iconic sites of the Inca empire , Machu Picchu in Peru has featured on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1983. Perched high on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 2,430 metres, the citadel has yet to reveal all of its mysteries to archaeologists. According to some sources, it was the home of the Inca emperor Pachacútec while others believe it was a religious sanctuary . However, when the Inca empire collapsed, it was abandoned before construction could be completed. The granite citadel is an architectural jewel, built on several terraces. It remains one of the most visited sites in Latin America and is the ultimate expression of harmony between humankind and nature.

Visit Chan Chan

While the Incas had Machu Picchu, the Chimú people had Chan Chan. This archaeological site is found in northern Peru and bears witness to the sophistication of this civilisation, which was later defeated by the Incas and has since been pretty much forgotten. Chan Chan, the cradle of Chimú culture, was once home to up to 300,000 people, and bears witness to the remarkable social organisation of the Chimú. It stands out from the other sites due to the light colour of its buildings, its richly adorned adobe walls into which intricate geometric and figurative designs are carved.

Explore the Torres del Paine national park

Torres del Paine National Park in Chile lies between the Andes and the Patagonian steppe and was founded in 1959 to protect the region's biodiversity. The park owes its name to the emblematic Torres del paine , three granite peaks that tower over the Paine Massif. Yet the region is truly typified in the variety of its landscapes , which range from mountains and glaciers to valleys, lakes and pools. This protected environment has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1978 and harbours an array of species such as the guanaco, puma, the Patagonian hog-nosed skunk and the Andean fox.

Sail past some iconic spots

If you enjoy travelling by sea, you are no doubt keen to retrace history and sail the routes of the great explorers of the past. In the south of Latin America, these routes weave through the islands of Chile and Argentina. The Pío XI, El Brujo and Garibaldi Glaciers, the Strait of Magellan, the Beagle Channel and Cap Horn are all iconic crossing points that have marked seafaring history.

Immerse yourself in the old colonial cities

Founded by the conquistadors in the 16th century, the colonial cities Trujillo and Lima in Peru or Granada in Nicaragua boast some extremely rich heritage. The magnificent coloured buildings, sculpted wood balconies, imposing cathedrals, squares and richly decorated palaces provide the backdrop for a stunning trip back in time.

Ports of call in South America

Our cruises in North America combine the natural beauty of the Great Lakes, the St Lawrence River, and Niagara Falls with the breathtaking architecture of Boston, Vancouver, Toronto, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. You'll be enchanted by both the cultural treasures of the Indigenous Americans and the museums of the major cities on the American east coast.

Land programs & hotels.

This exciting expedition affords a look at the jungle of the magnificent Amazon. You will make your way via riverboat to a lodge situated in the heart of the jungle, home to playful monkeys and elusive caiman —both of which you will have a good chance to see.

The Amazon Ecopark Jungle Lodge is scientific and educational property, created and directed by a private initiative in 1991, opening its doors to the public as an Ecotourism Lodge in 1995. It’s approximately one hour from Manaus, and right in the middle of the Amazon Forest, several streams of clear water run through the area. Over 6 miles of jungle trails including un-catalogued species, natural savannahs and creeks enable visitors to explore the jungle, observe orchids and giant trees. The lodge also has a beach and four natural small pools.

DAY 1- December 24th, 2023

Right after the ship’s clearance, your local guide will meet you at the gangway for the 30-minute transfer to the Marina Tauá and to its floating jetty. Here you will board a riverboat for a cruise of approximately 30-minutes along the Rio Negro to the Amazon Ecopark Lodge. With several streams and over six miles of trails running through the area, the Ecopark Lodge is an ideal launching point for jungle explorations. During such expeditions, you are likely to admire orchids, gaze at giant trees and spy un-catalogued species of wildlife.

Before enjoying a chance to spot the creatures of the Amazon, savor the comforts of the lodge by taking a moment to sip a welcome fruit drink and check in followed by an informal buffet lunch.

After lunch, meet your guide in the lobby for your first thrilling jungle excursion. Embark on a motorized canoe —the main form of transportation in the jungle — and cruise through the area’s ‘Igarapes’ or small creeks, for a close-up look at the magnificent jungle scenery. You may stop to visit a local native home along the riverside and, if river conditions permit, you may even fish for voracious piranhas.

In the evening, depart again by motorized canoe and penetrate the dense vegetation until you are completely surrounded by the darkness of the jungle. Your native guide will then begin flashing a strong light on the river’s surface until, with luck; it catches the shining eyes of a caiman. While the caiman remains hypnotized by the bright light, you will slowly approach until the guide is able to catch it with his bare hands, allowing you to take a few photographs before the alligator-like creature is released, unharmed, back into the water.

After this exciting tour return to the lodge for a Christmas Eve dinner with typical specialties from the region.

DAY 2 – December 25th, 2023

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before stepping aboard a canoe for a journey into the forest, where you will enjoy a guided hike. Learn about survival techniques and the natural remedies used by the locals. Next, visit the nearby Monkey Island. At the Island, you will observe researchers working to rehabilitate monkeys that were once held captive. The spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, wooly monkeys and Capuchin monkeys—many of which are orphans—now roam free in this sanctuary.

When your approximately two-hour canoe and hike exploration draws to a close, return to the lodge where you will be refreshed with an informal buffet lunch.

As the morning eases into the afternoon hours, bid farewell to your friends at the Ecopark Jungle Lodge and by early afternoon, return to Manaus via riverboat and your awaiting vehicle back to the port in time to re-board your ship.

Land Program Step by Step:

Please note: The order of sites visited may vary to avoid congestion. All program details and the timings indicated below are approximate, given here for general reference purposes and subject to change. Final itineraries with the most up to date details will be provided by the Destination Services Team once you board the ship. Please review your final itinerary carefully for any amendments.

As water levels on the Amazon and its tributaries vary, the program itinerary and content is subject to change. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Top South America FAQs

What is the best time of year to cruise around South America?

The seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere, so the warmer months, from November to March or April, are the best time to cruise, which is when our Celebrity Eclipse will be sailing the region in 2024.

The Galapagos is completely different, as the islands lie across the Equator. The Galapagos is a year-round destination, with far fewer variations in climate, and benefits to sailing in any given month.

How safe is it?

For Celebrity Cruises® and parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, the safety of our guests and crew has always been our highest priority. We encourage you to leave valuables on board when you go ashore, and to use the safe provided in your stateroom for your valuables.

As with any big city with lots of visitors, you should take precautions in places like Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. Don’t carry your cell phone or wallet in your back pocket, and keep your purse and camera close to you. Do not leave your belongings unattended on a beach.

What are the typical ports of call on a South America cruise?

Celebrity offers a wide variety of South American cruises with many exciting ports of call. You could sail between Buenos Aires and Valparaiso with two ports of call in wild and beautiful Patagonia, as well as two in sophisticated Uruguay, and a day in Puerto Madryn, Argentina. Or you could pick a similar itinerary that included the Chilean Fjords, an area of vast glaciers, narrow channels, and jagged peaks.

If you prefer a warmer climate, pick an itinerary that sails between sophisticated Buenos Aires and exotic Rio de Janeiro. You’ll also visit Buzios and São Paulo in Brazil, and Montevideo and Punta del Este in Uruguay.

To many, the ultimate adventure is a cruise to Antarctica , a world of icy beauty, towering mountains, and extraordinary wildlife. These itineraries include Ushuaia, the most southerly city in the world, and the fascinating Falkland Islands.

Galapagos cruises visit several islands and landing points over the course of a week, with multiple opportunities for wildlife spotting, hiking, snorkeling, and exploring pristine beaches and mangroves.

Are there any vaccination or health requirements?

There are no compulsory vaccinations for South America, but you should make sure your regular inoculations are up to date, as you may be traveling to remote areas. If you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is prevalent, you may need a yellow fever vaccination certificate, so check with your physician in advance.

Celebrity does not sail to areas where there is a high risk of malaria, so you will not need anti-malarial medication.

How do I handle currency exchange for the different countries visited?

Some South America cruises visit as many as four countries, and each will only accept its own currency. You will be able to use credit cards in big cities like Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Rio de Janeiro, but in more rural areas, you may need cash.

You will find ATMs on shore, and you can also change money on the ship. Make sure you understand the exchange rate in each port before you go ashore and spend money.

What types of wildlife and natural landmarks can I expect to see?

South America is an enormous continent and you will see extremes of climate, geography, and wildlife. You might see whales around Puerto Madryn and Magellanic penguins in Patagonia. If you visit Antarctica, you’ll see gentoo and chinstrap penguins, leopard seals, and most likely, several kinds of whales. On the Drake Passage, you could spot graceful wandering albatross, the bird with the widest wingspan on the planet. Excursions in the Falkland Islands take you to look for five different species of penguin, while in Ecuador and Chile, you could see magnificent condors soaring on the thermals.

In the Galapagos, you’ll see endemic species including marine and land iguanas, Galapagos penguins, Galapagos sea lions, reef sharks, sea turtles, and many more.

Is a cruise a good way to see South America?

A cruise is an exceptionally good way to see South America. Distances are long and it would be very time-consuming to visit the number of destinations you can see on a cruise if you were traveling by land and air.

A South America cruise offers wonderful contrasts, too. For example, in the space of 12 nights you could be enjoying a sultry tango show in Buenos Aires, exploring the wilds of Patagonia, sailing around Cape Horn, and admiring the famous street art in Valparaiso. You could see the beautiful Chilean Fjords and the Lake District, or experience the ultimate adventure, a voyage to Antarctica.

How long are South America cruises?

The majority of our South America cruises range from 12 to 14 nights. Galapagos cruises are seven nights, but if you add on a land extension, the whole experience will be 10, 11, or 16 nights.

Where do they depart from?

South America cruises depart from Buenos Aires, Valparaiso, and Los Angeles. Galapagos cruise and land packages start in Quito. Alternatively, you can join your ship in Baltra, in the Galapagos itself.

What should I pack?

A South America cruise could take you through many different climates. If you sail between Buenos Aires and Valparaiso, for example, you should pack for warm summer days and beach weather in the cities, and much cooler, windier weather in Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. If you are headed for Antarctica, you will need layers, fleeces, gloves, a hat, and a good waterproof jacket. If you’re traveling to Brazil, on the other hand, pack breathable fabrics and loose clothing for the tropics.

For the Galapagos, pack clothing in neutral colors that will protect you from the sun, as you could be out walking for hours at a time. You will need a hat, walking shoes, and a lot of space on your camera’s memory card as you will take a lot of photos. Wetsuits and snorkel gear are provided on board the ship.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover-ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Cruises to the Galapagos are less formal and there are no Evening Chic nights, as these are expedition voyages. In the Galapagos, for women, we recommend resort-casual attire (pants, skirts, or even casual dresses), and for men, a comfortable shirt and pants in the evenings.
