For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

• Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? • Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
• Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Norway has never been more popular as a cruise destination. In 2023, more than six million passenger visits were recorded by Norwegian cruise ports, an all-time record .

Yet in the popular summer season, Norway’s busiest ports are full to the brim with cruise ships. So, where is that growth coming from?

The typical Norwegian fjords cruise used to be a summer-only experience, with ships relocated to the Mediterranean or other parts of the world for the rest of the year. But the popularity of Norway has seen cruise lines experiment with lengthening the fjords season from as early as April to as late as September.

This increase in the number of fjords itineraries comes at a time when winter cruising is also enjoying a boom in popularity, thanks to the extensive coverage of the solar maximum meaning it’s prime time to see the northern lights.

Fjords Season Longer Than Ever

The Norwegian fjords region is famous as a summer destination, with images of lush green mountainsides and bright blue skies used to draw in travelers from all over the world. Despite more uncertain weather, many cruise lines have extended their seasons in the fjords from the late spring through to fall.

It’s not just about offering the same itineraries earlier and later. James Moss, itinerary product manager at Fred Olsen Cruise Lines explains that cruising outside the beautiful spring and summer months offers chances to see different sides of Norway.

“In autumn, we take guests to Hardangerfjord for the harvest season. In Ulvik, we offer guests the opportunity to meet local farm owners and sample produce like pears and apples,” he says.

Boom In Northern Lights Travel

Interest in northern lights cruise itineraries has also grown significantly in recent years, due in large part to the prominent coverage of the expected solar maximum in the media.

The best northern lights itineraries aim to get north of the Arctic circle as early in the cruise as possible in order to maximize the number of port calls from where aurora chasing is possible. There are also good chances of sightings from the ships themselves, if you’re prepared to dress up warm and stay up late.

Although the chance to see the northern lights is the star attraction, cruising Northern Norway in the winter offers other benefits too.

Moss says guests can “witness the fjords from a different perspective with stunning snow-topped peaks” and experience thrilling winter activities “such as ice fishing, dog sledding and snow-shoeing.”

Popular With German Lines

Norway is also becoming a more popular destination for German-focused cruise lines. AIDA Cruises—part of the same Carnival group as Costa, Cunard, Holland America, P&O Cruises, and Princess—is a common sight at ports less popular with other cruise lines such as Trondheim.

Other European cruise lines such as MSC Cruises start many itineraries from Kiel or Hamburg.

New Hurtigruten Offering

Since Hurtigruten lost its monopoly on the Norwegian coastal route, the company has sought new uses for some of its vessels.

To celebrate 130 years of the coastal route, Hurtigruten introduced two new routes for MS Trollfjord that act more like cruises than local transport. The popularity of the new offer has resulted in Hurtigruten making the two routes permanent, with a few alterations.

In the summer, the ‘Svalbard Line’ will take guests from Bergen, up the Norwegian coast, and over to Svalbard, with port calls at remote settlements Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund.

In the winter, the ‘North Cape Line’ travels from Oslo, all around the south of Norway and up the coastline to Honningsvåg, for the North Cape, before returning to Bergen. Both routes offer ports never before served by the line.

Hurtigruten’s coastal ferry rival Havila Voyages also announced an extension to its Geirangerfjord season. For many years, the coastal ferry has taken a detour from Ålesund into one of Norway’s most scenic fjords for the summer season.

In 2025, the Havila ships—which are capable of sailing on battery power for up to four hours—will also carry tourists and locals into the Geirangerfjord during April and May .

Growth In Expedition Cruising

Cruise ships carrying more than 200 guests—the vast majority of mainstream cruise lines—face tough new environmental regulations that open up the Arctic travel market for specialist expedition cruise companies. The number of expedition ships visiting Longyearbyen had already increased from 39 in 2016 to 81 in 2022.

While sailings in and around Svalbard are restricted to the late spring and summer months when light is available, many expedition ships offer trips in Arctic Norway during the winter season for northern lights expeditions and whale-watching tours.

The 4 classes of Holland America ships, explained

In the wake of a major downsizing in 2020 , Holland America has a relatively simple fleet.

The storied, Seattle-based cruise line now operates 11 vessels that can be bunched into just four groups.

Each of these groups — known as "classes" in cruise industry lingo — is made of ships that were constructed around the same time and follow the same basic design. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

An introduction to Holland America ships

Holland America has downsized its fleet considerably over the past three years with the removal of four vessels. However, it's still one of the seven big lines that account for the majority of cruises taken by North Americans. Its 11 ships offer nearly 23,000 berths .

In general, Holland America operates big ships. However, they're not nearly as big as the vessels operated by the six other big lines that cater to North Americans. Indeed, in some cruising circles, Holland America's ships are referred to as "midsize" ships (as opposed to big ships).

Holland America's largest vessels measure about 100,000 tons, making them about 60% smaller than the biggest ships operated by Royal Caribbean and 40% smaller than the biggest ships operated by Norwegian Cruise Line .

Some of Holland America's vessels are just 61,000 tons, which is as small as some of the vessels operated by much pricier, smaller lines such as Oceania Cruises or Azamara .

This means you'll be in for a more intimate cruise experience on the typical Holland America ship than on the ships of such rival lines as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises . There will be fewer people on board, and venues may be less crowded.

On the flip side, you'll generally find fewer venues and amenities on Holland America ships than on the ships of its competitors operating bigger vessels. If you're looking for a big, bustling megaship with every amusement known to humans , Holland America isn't your line.

Unlike some lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, Holland America doesn't drastically change the design of its ships from class to class.

Instead, Holland America usually takes an incremental approach to design changes for its new classes of ships. You'll find a lot in common between Holland America's Pinnacle Class and Signature Class of ships, for instance. And these two classes won't feel all that different from the earlier Vista Class.

In general, Holland America's biggest and most amenity-packed ships are its newest ships. If you're looking for a Holland America cruise experience with the most possible onboard activities and venues, you'll want to steer toward the vessels in its new Pinnacle Class.

If cruising in the most intimate environment possible is your goal, you'll want to look at the R Class, Holland America's oldest class of ships.

Pinnacle Class

Ships in class: Rotterdam (2021); Nieuw Statendam (2018); Koningsdam (2016)

Size: 99,500 to 99,863 tons

If you're in the "newer is better" camp when it comes to cruise ships, this is the Holland America ship class for you.

Holland America's Pinnacle Class just began rolling out in 2016, and the three vessels in the series are significantly younger than any other vessel in the Holland America fleet.

They're also bigger than any other vessel in the Holland America fleet and, as a result, boast more amenities.

Notably, in addition to a main restaurant and casual buffet, each of the three Pinnacle Class ships has five separate specialty dining venues. Options include everything from a pan-Asian eatery and an Italian restaurant to a steakhouse. That's more than you'll find on other Holland America ships.

Pinnacle Class ships also have all of Holland America's signature entertainment venues — something that can't be said for the line's older vessels.

Specifically, on Pinnacle Class ships, you'll find one of the line's signature live music entertainment areas with a B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock).

The Pinnacle Class ships also have spectacular, state-of-the-art main theaters with push-out stages enveloped by two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screens. The theaters are home to all sorts of additional music, dance and comedy performances.

The top decks of the Pinnacle Class ships have main pool areas that can be covered by a retractable glass magrodome during inclement weather. This makes these ships a good choice when booking a cruise in a destination where the weather can be iffy. The pool areas also have a large screen to show movies, something unique to the ships of the Pinnacle Class.

Each of the Pinnacle Class ships also has a secondary SeaView Pool and lounge area at its back.

Additionally, each of the Pinnacle Class ships has a spa, a casino and an extra-fee outdoor lounge area called The Retreat — a feature that first debuted with the Pinnacle Class. Also new on the Pinnacle Class ships are Holland America's first ocean-view cabins for solo and family travelers.

Each of the Pinnacle Class ships is designed to carry 2,650 passengers at double occupancy.

Signature Class

Ships in class: Nieuw Amsterdam (2010); Eurodam (2008)

Size: 86,700 and 86,273 tons, respectively

At around 87,000 tons, the Signature Class vessels are about 15% smaller than the Pinnacle Class ships, and they have a somewhat more intimate feel.

They also have a tad fewer amenities.

Like the Pinnacle Class ships, both of the Signature Class vessels — Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam — have live music entertainment with a B.B. King's Blues Club, Billboard Onboard and Rolling Stone Lounge (coming to these ships in December 2023), for instance.

And you'll find just three extra-charge restaurants on the ships: the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse, Canaletto for Italian and the pan-Asian Tamarind. Unlike the Pinnacle Class vessels, the Signature Class ships don't have Rudi's Sel De Mer, a brasserie created by top Holland America chef Rudi Sodamin. They also don't have a Grand Dutch Cafe.

Still, the Signature Class ships are similar in look and feel to the Pinnacle Class ships.

Like the Pinnacle Class ships, the Signature Class ships have main pool areas that can be covered by retractable glass magrodomes during inclement weather and secondary pool areas at their backs.

The ships are designed to carry about 2,100 passengers at double occupancy.

Vista Class

Ships in series: Noordam (2006); Westerdam (2004); Oosterdam (2003); Zuiderdam (2002)

Size: Between 82,305 and 82,348 tons

Comprising four vessels, this is the biggest group of Holland America ships. Thus, it's the class of Holland America ship on which you are most likely to sail.

In size, the vessels are just a tad smaller than the Signature Class ships — about 5% smaller, to be exact. However, they are designed to carry about 9% fewer people at double occupancy, meaning they offer a less crowded feel than the Signature Class vessels.

Their slightly smaller size means there are slightly fewer amenities, though.

For example, each of the four Vista Class vessels offers just two specialty restaurants: Holland America's signature Pinnacle Grill steakhouse and the Italian restaurant, Canaletto. Unlike the Signature Class, there is no pan-Asian dining venue.

The main entertainment offerings on the Vista Class vessels are identical to what's found on Signature Class ships: a live music entertainment area with a B.B. King's Blues Club, Rolling Stone Lounge and Billboard Onboard venue.

Like the Pinnacle Class and Signature Class ships, the Vista Class ships have main pool areas that can be covered by retractable glass magrodomes during inclement weather and secondary pool areas at their backs.

Ships in series: Zaandam (2000); Volendam (1999)

Size: 61,396 and 61,214 tons, respectively

The R Class ships are about 25% to 38% smaller than the rest of the ships in the Holland America fleet and have a more cozy feel.

Because of their smaller size, they also have fewer features and amenities than the ships in the other Holland America classes — particularly the ships of the newer Pinnacle and Signature classes.

In general, R Class ships appeal to cruisers looking for a more intimate cruise experience. They also draw cruisers who care more about the destinations they visit on a cruise than onboard attractions.

Along those lines, Holland America often deploys the R Class ships on its more far-flung, destination-rich itineraries, including lengthy around-the-world cruises.

For instance, in the fall of 2024, Zaandam is scheduled to sail a 51-day Tales of the South Pacific cruise round trip from San Diego, visiting 22 island ports from Hawaii to Fiji.

In early 2024, Volendam departs San Diego on a 94-day Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage that crosses the Pacific Ocean and circles the continent of Australia. In 2025, the ship will sail a 133-day Grand Voyage: Pole to Pole cruise out of Fort Lauderdale that is the first of its kind for the cruise line and explores both the North and South Pole.

Despite their smaller size, the R Class ships offer the same number of pool areas (two) as their bigger sister vessels, with one pool area covered by a retractable glass magrodome.

Each of the vessels has two specialty dining venues: Holland America's signature Pinnacle Grill steakhouse and the Italian restaurant Canaletto.

Entertainment options on the R Class ships include a main World Stage theater for shows, a piano bar and a string ensemble that performs onboard.

Bottom line

The Holland America fleet is relatively easy to understand. There are just four types of ships in the Holland America fleet, and — for the most part — they aren't too different from each other.

Holland America believes strongly in offering a consistent product from ship to ship, and it doesn't make revolutionary changes with each class of vessels it unveils.

The big difference between the line's four classes of ships is the size of the vessels in the classes. If you're a fan of bigger ships with more amenities, you'll probably gravitate to the new Pinnacle Class vessels. If you like your cruise ships more intimate, you'll probably want to stick with the R Class vessels.

You won't be 'overcrowded by thousands of tourists': What to know about Montreal cruises

• Montreal is the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province.
• The city offers a relatively quaint cruise experience.
• The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023.

On a recent afternoon, I strolled beside patches of purple flowers on a wooden walkway at the Port of Montreal. The Promenade d'Iberville green roof, with western red cedar decking and more than 24,000 aromatic and flowering plants, was built on top of the city’s main cruise terminal.

The effect was less industrial infrastructure – like many ports – and more charming urban parks.

Montreal may be the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province, but it offers a relatively quaint cruise experience. Bridges between Montreal and Quebec City block vessels with air draft – the distance from the waterline to the highest point on a ship – over 49 meters (or about 161 feet) from berthing at its facilities in Old Montreal.

The ships that visit are generally smaller (though the city can accommodate those with a maximum 50-meter (164 feet) air draft east of the Jacques Cartier Bridge).

“We are positioning Montreal as a niche port for luxury ships,” Yves Gilson, associate director of cruises at the Port of Montreal, told USA TODAY during a visit in May. Here’s what to know about sailing into and out of the city.

The cruise inventory tends to be upscale

Montreal typically welcomes ships carrying 2,000 passengers or less from several upscale cruise lines, which tend to operate ships with lower capacity. Those include Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Viking, Ponant and more. Though not a luxury brand, one of the city’s main clients is Holland America Line, which will send its 1,432-guest Volendam ship there this season.

The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023. By contrast, its neighbor to the northeast, Quebec City, saw 154,000 passengers . Despite its smaller population, large ships from operators like Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line will visit Quebec City this season (along with smaller vessels).

Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel, added that it’s not just ocean cruise ships that stop in Montreal. “There are river cruises that can get in and out of there as well,” he said.

Gilson noted that the city “could absorb” traffic from bigger ships if not for the bridges. “But on the other hand, the experience for the guest is marvelous because you know they will not be overcrowded by thousands of tourists,” he said.

You can hit the ground walking

The main cruise terminal is close to many of the city’s popular attractions. Old Montreal’s Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica and the Place d’Armes are less than a 10-minute walk away, and numerous restaurants, shops, and museums are also nearby. 

I grabbed a prosciutto sandwich at Italian grocery store Dispensa; ate on a bench outside; picked up a coffee at Cafecito and was able to be at the main terminal within 15 minutes or so on foot while taking in views of the water and architectural landmarks like Habitat 67.

There are also multiple close bicycle rental and Metro stations, and waiting taxis (the port works with software platform, Véco Taxi, which gives priority to electric vehicles).

Gilson said more lines are offering overnight stays in Montreal, giving guests more time to explore.

When is the best time for a Montreal cruise?

Montreal’s cruise season begins in May and ends in October, hitting its peak during the last two months of that period. Feldman said fall foliage is a particular draw for passengers. 

Montreal often features on Canada and New England itineraries alongside ports such as Boston, Massachusetts and Halifax, Nova Scotia. The port’s cruise calendar can be found by clicking here .

The sailings tend to last around 10 to 14 days. “The distances between the ports in this region can be significant and navigation through areas like the St. Lawrence River and around the Gulf of Maine take time,” he said. Passengers on those sailings are looking for a “more immersive experience.”

“Longer itineraries allow for more time in each port and often include scenic cruising days,” he added.

Cruise ships have historically avoided the area when cold sets in, but that could soon change: Ponant’s icebreaking Le Commandant Charcot will offer sailings in St. Lawrence in the winter of 2025. While the ship will not visit Montreal due to its size – though it will stop in Quebec City – Gilson hopes it will mark a shift.

Three Cruises Compared – NCL vs HAL vs VV

This summer I took three cruises.  Each was the same length (7 days) and each was on a different cruise line in a different part of the world.  Each cruise had four ports and two sea days.  On each ship I booked a balcony stateroom.

Three Cruises

The first cruise I took was with Norwegian Cruise Line on the Norwegian Spirit.  This trip went from Vancouver to Seward, Alaska with stops in Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, and Icy Point Strait.  It was on an older ship — the Spirit was built in the 1990’s but went through a $100 million overhaul in 2020.

The second cruise was with Holland America Cruise Line on the Nieuw Statendam.  This trip was round trip out of Copenhagen with stops in the Norway (Eidfjord, Geiranger, Alesund) and Gothenburg, Sweden.  The Nieuw Statendam is a larger ship that was built in 2018.

The third cruise was with Virgin Voyages on the Resilient Lady.  This trip was round trip out of Athens, Greece with stops in the Greek Islands of Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos and Bodrum, Turkey.  The Resilient Lady is (as of writing this post) the newest ship in the Virgin Voyages fleet, built in 2023.  It is similar in size to the Nieuw Statendam.

I rate each cruise on various categories below, picking a winner of the best in each category. As to not burry the lead, Virgin Voyages came out as the clear winner in just about every area.

This is a bit of comparing apples to oranges.  My first two cruises (Norwegian and Holland America) were booked through casino offers: Norwegian through my status with Caesars Rewards and Holland America through an offer from a local land based casino.  Virgin Voyages, however, was booked using Virgin Red points.

I have broken out what I paid for each cruise:

Winner: Virgin Voyages

I had a similar type of stateroom on each sailing — an outside balcony.

All three rooms were updated (the oldest being Holland America from 2018) and all were quite comfortable.

Virgin took the prize for technology with an included tablet that controls lights, TV, and curtains. I like their modern decor and the hammock on the balcony is extremely comfortable. But the bathroom is small. I didn’t do a separate post on the stateroom on Resilient Lady, but you can see a nearly identical tour of my room on Scarlet Lady .

Norwegian was overall very good with a ton of storage and nice colors. The TV was quite small (not that I watched any TV). I could also hear my neighbors more than any of the other ships.

Due to upgrading to Club Orange on Holland America, I had a unique room that was essentially sideways to the outside. This gave me a huge balcony and twice the windows. It was also the only ship that had twice daily housekeeping and the nicest bathroom. It felt the most classic of rooms too, which isn’t really something that I preferred but I’m guessing others would.

Winner: Holland America

All three ships are equipped with wifi. Norwegian included 150 minutes with their “Free at Sea” package. Holland America included unlimited basic with their “Have It All” package. And Virgin Voyages has free basic wifi for all passengers, and I was upgraded to free premium with my “Deep Blue Extras” status.

Norwegian and Holland America wifi rarely worked (maybe it connected about 20% of the time). When it did work, it was extremely slow. Someone trying to work while at sea would have been in trouble.

Virgin wifi worked all the time and was as good as my home internet. I could stream video. If I was working from sea, I would have had no problems.

Each cruise had ports that wow-ed and ports that I felt could have been skipped. Both Norwegian and Holland America had to drop a port (or two) from their original itinerary.

The Greek islands are fun and hotels in the summer are prohibitively expensive. The Norwegian fjords are amazing to sail in and out of; and it is very difficult to get to them any other way than by ship. Still, I was blown away by the scenery of Alaska.

Winner: Alaska (Norwegian)

Service was good on all three ships. Norwegian and Holland America were similar in level of formality — staff always called me “sir” or “mister”. Most of the crew on these two ships were from the Philippines and Indonesia.

Virgin had a much more diverse crew (at least the public facing staff) from all parts of the world. The interactions with guests is casual and more conversational. The connection with staff felt much more personal and genuine.

The service on Holland America was probably the best from a hospitality standpoint — getting everything just right and being very formal.

For me, I much preferred the style of Virgin. And it was excellent — the casual nature did not mean things were missed.

Winner: Holland America (formal) and Virgin Voyages (my preference)

Virgin does things differently by not having a main dining room and having all restaurants included. There is no up-charge for specialty dining. And the food is consistently fantastic .

Holland America and Norwegian have the more traditional cruise dining options — a main dining room with some quick service options and up-charge specialty dining. I found the food at the specialty dining on Norwegian to be best, but the main dining room on Holland America to far surpass that on Norwegian.

Entertainment

Holland America has a nice theater and I enjoyed their Step One Dance Company. Their various music venues offer something for everyone.

Norwegian had a few good shows but overall it felt more amateur to me. Almost like entertainment was an after thought. I understand they are changing their entertainment options so I will be interested to see where it goes. Norwegian also offers some broadway shows on their larger ship; just not on the Spirit.

Virgin takes entertainment to the next level. From the Happenings Cast to Scarlet Night to their many productions shows, Virgin Voyages does entertainment extremely well. Their shows are edgy so might not be for everyone (it is an adults only cruise). But in my opinion there is no contest.

In my opinion, Virgin Voyages are better than either Norwegian or Holland America in just about every single way. One note: For families, Virgin is not an option as no kids are allowed so it can’t even be considered as an option. For me, no kids was another huge plus.

I don’t know that it is fair to compare Virgin to the other cruise lines. Virgin Voyages is only three years old. Holland America, on the other hand, is celebrating their 150th birthday this year.

Virgin currently only has three ships.

My guess is that Virgin Voyages are losing a LOT of money right now. They are pouring money into all aspects of their sailings to prove that they can change the cruise experience. However, I don’t imagine that their current business is financially sustainable.

My prediction is that Virgin Voyages is trying to position themselves for a buy out by one of the larger companies. When that happens, we will see big changes to cut costs and Virgin will no longer be the the best cruise line.

If you are planing a cruise with adults in the next year or two, there is no reason to consider Holland America or Norwegian over Virgin Voyages. The entertainment and the food are exceptional. The price is right (even without the amazing deal I got, there are plenty of deals to be had). The staterooms are very comfortable and the service is amazing.

NCL VS Holland America to Alaska.

We have cruised on NCL half a dozen times and like the line (Breakaway, Dawn, Gem). We put deposit on Holland America Oosterdam for Alaska, May 2017 cruise. NCL is priced the same for our days for Balcony cabins (2 adults / 2 kids in one room). After reading HAL boards I am worried if this is a cruise line for us. We have been on RCCL, Celebrity and Princes and liked them all (Crown Princes being our least favorite). Originally, I assumed that HAL would be best for Alaska. Anybody who experienced BOTH HAL and NCL IN Alaska, please let me hear your thoughts.

I've done both, twice on NCL and once on HAL to Alaska. I'm not a HAL cheerleader.

You will likely hear from them that "HAL or Princess does Alaska better because they have been there the longest." I saw no evidence of that. The best comparison is how Glacier Bay is done by both and the ranger program was equal on both, in fact, it was identical. You enter the Bay, sit in front of the Marjorie Glacier, turn so that the other side of the ship can view it, and then move on. The only difference is if you want warm pea soup on deck (that's a HAL tradition).

It is all about itinerary. I think Skagway is amazing with opportunities to go to the Yukon- I've done that twice- once by train/van and the other renting a car. Sitka was the HAL port instead of Skagway- nice little town, but not much to see.

The food was slightly better on HAL, but the service in the dining room was horrible. To be fair, our wait staff was the problem while others in the DR seemed to not have their issues.

HAL's Westerdam had rather dark interiors and the entertainment wasn't on par with NCL.

You might hear that HAL has an older clientele, but that was not evident in Alaska. There were lots of families and younger people and the reports on their kids' program was positive. NCL's typical passengers to Alaska are across the board. You, however, are traveling in May, so it is likely that the HAL experience may skew towards an older group. That said, there will be fewer children on NCL too. That could be to your advantage!

I gave HAL a try because I read reports that HAL was a step above NCL. It didn't prove true at all. HAL is just like RCL, NCL, Carnival, etc.

It is true that HAL has more passes to Glacier Bay because of their seniority (which I think is very unfair). That may change in the near future when the ten year agreement comes due for negotiation.

So, I would choose a NCL cruise that goes to Glacier Bay OVER HAL by a small margin, everything else being equal.

I know you asked for posters who have done both, and that's not me, but I'm chiming in anyway ;)

The single, most memorable cruise experience I have ever had was on a HAL ship in Alaska while the naturalist was on board. We sat, with a latte, in a very comfy lounger chair, high up on the ship, looking out the almost floor to ceiling windows in the Explorations cafe while the naturalist described what we were seeing.

I looked at the Oosdterdam deck plans, and their Explorations cafe is also high up on the ship. If you plan to stay indoors while the naturalist is on board, I would vote for the Explorations cafe as a great place to experience it.

We prefer NCL, since HAL cruises are more laid back than we like. The entertainment isn't nearly as good as NCL. The big advantage to HAL is their ships. The have a retractable roof over the main pool. So, in Alaska you can still swim, no matter what the weather. For some that's a big deal. They're just pools though. No slides, anything compared to the newer NCL ships.

This! The retractable roof on the Hal ships is invaluable. On the Pearl and Jewel the Haven area has a retractable roof over the courtyard but if non Haven the main pools are open to elements so don't get much use unless its hot out. This makes for more crowded indoor areas.

If you plan on sailing the Pearl the spa is much nicer on the Pearl than the HAL ships. The Pearl spa has a sauna overlooking the water, much bigger, and tile loungers much more comfortable. The spa on HAL was a letdown in comparison.

Food marginally better on HAL. I believe on hal they still serve lobster. Reports on ncl differ but on our recent two week Jade med cruise I didn't see lobster on any menus, even speciality. I prefer the relaxed vacation atmosphere on ncl but i think Hal has also relaxed their dress code and I believe banned smoking on balconies.

Nightly theater entertainment on Ncl better than Hal.

Hal ships have a nicer promenade deck with nice teak padded deck chairs. Ncl also has promenade deck but not the same ship feel. I much prefer ncl over hal but for Alaska non Haven, I'd pick HAL hands down.

I prefer the relaxed vacation atmosphere on ncl but i think Hal has also relaxed their dress code and I believe banned smoking on balconies.

HAL has some great itineraries, but we would never consider them under the current, permissive smoking policy. Now we can. :)

We just did NCL Alaska on the Sun last month. The food was a significant improvement over earlier NCL cruises.

Haven't done HAL due to their smoking policy, which seemed to attract smokers. HAL has changed its policy to be similar to NCL.

I have sailed to Alaska on HAL and on NCL on Westerdam and Pearl respectively. I would sail with HAL for the fact that Oosterdam has a usable pool area even in bad weather due to its retractable glass magrodome roof. Oosterdam also has about 400 fewer passengers, so the ship will feel roomier on an itinerary where folks are likely to spend a lot of time indoors.

Keep in mind the following: Oosterdam just emerged from a dry dock where many interior spaces were refurbished and HAL's new entertainment scheme was installed, including BB King's Blues Club, Billboard Onboard dueling-pianos show, and Lincoln Center Stage string quartet. I am really glad they changed it I was part of a focus group involving advertising for HAL a while ago. I told them in no uncertain terms anything else made no difference for as long as they allowed smoking on the balconies. I am soewhat surprised that HAL did not email me as I also took the time to contact them and let them know why they would not have me as a customer. HAL seems to be really working on sending their ships to lesser known ports which could be a lot of fun and more interesting than seeing 7 other ships in port the same day your ship docks,

The HAL cruise takes you to Hubbard Glacier instead of Glacier Bay National Park. I have been to both on HAL and Royal and you want to see Hubbard Glacier for sure. It is much larger and more majestic. Check out the videos on you tube. Sitka has a wonderful eagle rehab facility your children might like and the town is beautiful. The food on HAL is very good but I can't compare it to NCL since my first cruise with them will be in a month. No matter which ship you use, your balcony will be the best place to see the glacier. The public areas get overloaded with everyone. If your children want to swim HAL is the one to pick since they have the retractable roof.

Thank You to all who took time to respond. I really appreciate all the insight. I have also repriced the cruise and NCL is now $1000 more for comparable room then Oosterdam. We have been to Glasier Bay and would like to see Hubard glacier. We haven't been to Sitka, though I loved train excursion in Skagway and wished kids could experience it, but on Oosterdam sailing there is Sitka instead of Skagway. So, I am looking to flying into Vancouver now and taking Amtrack from there to Seattle. It should be a very scenic route. Unfortunately air fare to Vancouver from New York one way is as much as a round trip NYC to Seattle:(! Working on it. Thank You all again.

Have not been on Hal however if/when I do Alaska again it will be on Hal. My biggest disappointment on NCL to Alaska was that the pools were closed the whole time, but then it is not warm enough for the pool out. Hal has a covered pool so you can be nice and warm enjoying the water while sailing which is a fav of mine. You can even sun bath as the ceiling is clear and tan through(also means you need sun screen)

You will be grateful for the covered swimming pool on the Oosterdam if you like to take a dip! On the Radiance OTS, the outdoor pool was unusable (we sailed at the end of May). It was freezing, so everyone was in the Solarium, which was perfect. Hubbard Glacier was the highlight of the trip. We sat on our balcony the whole time!! I would never book an Alaskan cruise without it.

HOLLAND AMERICA LINE (HAL), hands down should be your FIRST choice for an Alaskan Cruise, especially with their COVERED swimming pool, OUTSIDE Promenade Deck, (with tons of LOUNGERS)! I have done an Alaskan Cruise twice with HAL, & wouldn't consider ANY other cruise line, irregardless of the price! :)

We have done Alaska and have sailed both ships, but not HAL to Alaska. We like both lines, in fact they are our 2 favorites for different reasons. The pros about HAL is service and the cabins are larger, especially with 4 in one cabin. Plus, of course HAL has been doing Alaska since the starting of time. The biggest downfall for me would be the kids program plus no matter how hard they try, HAL is still the line of the old people. This is ok but I would think twice if I had kids.

I see some are reacting based on the pool issue. I don't know about you and your family, but when we did Alaska (both times on NCL) we could have cared less about a pool. BTW once was with a 12 year old. We were so busy with port intensive activities we never missed the pool. There are cruises where a pool is one of the important concerns, not when doing Alaska or Hawaii. For us, the size of the cabins would be our reason for taking HAL with 4 people in a cabin. The reason for takin NCL would be the less formal attitude and the friendly crew. As our friend put it, when doing HAL with us: HAL is great but it lacks energy. I thought that was the perfect way to put it.

My wife and I just did Alaska on the Jewel the first week of September. Not one bad thing to say about it. The food and service was great.....we had a blast and would go back in a heartbeat

Back in the day, HAL was one of the first cruiselines to do Alaska; then it became a staple of Princess itineraries (owned by same parent company). Since they have been there the longest, they tend to get better itineraries, port times, and excursions. Alaska cruising is amazing, but much more subtle than Caribbean. Last time I sailed HAL in Alaska they also had guest speakers. Perfect for HAL ships.

If HAL is doing their famous 14 nighter this year that stops in Anchorage, kodiak, and Homer (with sitka, Juneau, etc..)... I'd highly recommend that itinerary if you can swing it.

Thankfully, that answer is yes, and there are several brands that still provide exceptional value aboard their floating cities. Many are among the best cruise lines , and some are even frequent cruisers' favorite cruises . In fact, you might be surprised to learn that living on a cruise ship can be cheaper than a mortgage , in case you decide you never want to return from your vacation.

So follow these cruise tips for how to save money on a cruise by booking the most affordable cruise lines. You may even be able to sneak in an extra vacation this year with all your savings. Here's what to pack for a cruise .

How much does a cheap cruise cost?

Cheap cruises usually range in price from $40 to $100 per night per person. To put that deal in perspective, imagine having your accommodations, food and entertainment covered for roughly $50 a day on a traditional land-based trip—you'd be hard-pressed to stay within that budget just for your meals. It's truly impressive that these all-inclusive cruises can charge so little.

But before you get too excited over these low prices, don't forget to factor in the cost of the extras when calculating your total expenses—that's one of the secrets cruise lines won't tell you . Things like drinks, shore excursions, gratuities, spa treatments, specialty dining, airfare, photos, taxes and port fees aren't included and can add up quickly.

Finally, keep in mind that the best deals will always be for an inside cabin, which means you won't have a porthole (let alone a balcony) for natural light. The good news? You'll sleep like a baby in total darkness, especially during an afternoon nap.

When is the cheapest time to book a cruise?

It's important to pay attention to the cheapest times to book a cruise if you want to save even more. Wave season, which is from January to March, is a promotional time of year when cruise lines run their most competitive sales. These sales are designed to encourage bookings for later in the year. You can also keep an eye on sites like MSC's Cruise Deals to find great prices.

There are great deals at other times of the year too. Generally speaking, the further in advance you book, the better prices you'll find. But the opposite is also true, because cruise lines will happily sell unused inventory at a significantly reduced rate in the form of last-minute deals. You'll need a flexible schedule to pull this off, and you may find airfare is too costly at that point.

Beyond wave season, planning far in advance or nabbing last-minute cruise deals, it's also wise to consider booking your cruises for the off-season. For instance, for the Caribbean and Mexico, that would mean summer sailings or during shoulder season (the month before and after high season—for example, in the case of Alaska, this would be in May or September). Just know that you are taking a bit of a risk with the weather during these off-peak times.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers sailings out of the U.S. (New York, Miami and Orlando) to the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Bermuda, New England and Canada. It also offers sailings to Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Egypt, Dubai, South Africa and more.

Cost: Cruises on MSC start as low as $129 per person.

Specials to watch for: MSC offers such limited-time specials as free drinks and Wi-Fi plus up to $200 onboard credit (which can be used to book extras like shore excursions or spa treatments).

Other savings to consider: You won't find an adults-only cruise here, however this cruise line does offer a Kids Sail Free program, which means that all children under 18 traveling in the same cabin as their parents travel free all year-round. Port taxes, registration costs, insurance, flights and transfers (where required) are excluded from the offer, but it still goes a long way toward making this one of the most affordable cruise lines.

Affordable cruises: We've seen a 6-night southern Caribbean cruise for as low as $219 total per person.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line —known as one of the most affordable cruise lines—was founded in 1972 and now carries millions of guests every year aboard its 24 ships. It sails to Alaska, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, Europe, Greenland, Hawaii, Mexico, Panama Canal, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific.
