The Chicago singer-songwriter, who released her new album ‘Soberish’ last month, was due to head out on tour in August to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Morissette’s landmark third album ‘Jagged Little Pill’ .

The US tour is set to kick off on August 12, followed by a run of UK and Ireland dates in October which Phair was supposed to be on. However, she has now announced that she won’t be on the tour and that Cat Power will take her place on the line-up.

“Sadly, due to unforeseen circumstances, I won’t be able to join Alanis & Garbage on tour this summer,” Phair wrote on social media. “I’m incredibly disappointed as I was looking forward to seeing all of your beautiful faces.

She added: “Shoutout to Alanis, Garbage, and Cat Power, who I know will put on an incredible show. Hope to see you all soon.”

In a five-star review of Phair’s ‘Soberish’, NME ‘s El Hunt said it “serves as a reminder of Liz Phair’s brilliance after years of underestimation. Far from simply drawing on her most critically acclaimed albums, it draws on the whole lot, and finds newness within.”

“These are all songs that, just like the rest of Phair’s finest moments, have a delicious knack for becoming lodged in your brain.”

Meanwhile, Garbage icon Shirley Manson has heaped praise upon Billie Eilish for giving a voice and a platform to “rebellious girls” .

The frontwoman was speaking to NME when asked about the current crop of talent on her radar, before she noted how now marks “a very exciting time for a wave of new alternative,” and listing Jehnny Beth , Little Simz ,  Arlo Parks  and  Billy NoMates among her favourites before assess the importance of Eilish.

Liz Phair returns to iconic album 'Exile In Guyville' for 30th anniversary tour this fall

liz phair tour cancelled

  • Singer-songwriter Liz Phair released her landmark album 'Exile In Guyville' in June 1993.
  • The album has gained stature over the decades, hailed by Rolling Stone and others as one of the most important rock albums of all-time.
  • During her upcoming fall 2023 tour, Phair will play all of the album's 18 tracks live with a band in concert.

Liz Phair

Thirty years ago, Liz Phair etched her name into rock music history with her debut release “Exile in Guyville,” an indie-rock feminine manifesto – embraced by listeners of both sexes.

Phair, who is 56, is currently reconnecting with the twentysomething version of herself who created the lo-fi indie-rock classic, which since its June 1993 release has lodged itself concretely within weighty lists such as Rolling Stone’s Top 500 albums of all time , having placed at No. 56 in the outlet's 2020 revision.

This fall, the singer-songwriter undertakes a 30th anniversary victory lap for “Exile in Guyville” with her first tour in which she and a full band will play the album in its entirety at each date.

“I’m listening to her music, I’m looking at her, I’m reading about her because I miss the sensitivity I had, I miss the openness of my heart, like the fact that I could believe enough in new love to be like, heartbroken. I miss that, because there’s something about being my age now that you know you’re toughened," Phair told USA TODAY. "And that’s not as attractive to me now as that vulnerable thin-skinned sensitive … small girl (with) huge eyeballs. And I relish the opportunity to reconnect with her.”

Why is Liz Phair's 'Exile In Guyville' a big deal?

In the early 90s, Phair began sharing her original stripped-down four-track bedroom demos – recorded under the moniker "Girly-Sound" – with friends, and eventually a cassette made it to Matador Records, which signed her.

"One of the things that makes that record unique is the way that I was playing guitar. I was playing an electric, unamplified, so a lot of the chords and the notes I was making … there was like a jazziness to it," Phair said. "It's got a quality to it, because of the way I was writing the songs – very quietly, very privately."

Brad Wood, who would go on to produce, as well as play drums, bass and other instruments on the album, "likes to tell the story when he heard the cassettes that started something in him because he heard the originality of it," Phair said.

Kelly Clarkson: Singer-songwriter on her ‘horrible’ divorce, working with Steve Martin and talk show drama

Those original Girly-Sound tapes served as the basis for what would become "Exile In Guyville," a rare double-disc debut and a response to the Rolling Stones' "Exile on Main Street." The album title also plays off the song "Goodbye to Guyville," from the band Urge Overkill, which was part of the Chicago indie music scene at the time.

Phair describes the album's arc as a "sort of imaginary love story between the object of my desire – he was a rock star-type in the neighborhood – so I used Mick Jagger's lyrics as sort of an avatar for him."

Delivered in a unique and nasally voice, Phair's 18 songs – titles included "F--k and Run" and "Divorce Song" – dealt with topics most female songwriters tiptoed around.

"Back in '93 it was startling to hear a young female musician sing so directly about sex, relationships and male-female dynamics," wrote USA TODAY's Whitney Matheson on the 20th anniversary of "Exile In Guyville." "Phair wasn't preachy, either; her lyrics made you feel like she was sitting in your bedroom, enduring the pain of youth right along with you."

Critics embraced the arrival of "Guyville." The album "multitracks with Princely panache, adding simple, self-taught, alternative guitar noises, wrote Robert Christgau in a 2019 revisit of the Village Voice's 1993 Critics Poll , which "Exile In Guyville" topped.

In her 1993 music roundup, USA TODAY's Edna Gundersen called Phair "a royally perturbed feminist" who delivered "sexually charged views of relationships."

"Exile In Guyville" went gold, as did Phair's follow-up 1994's "Whip-Smart" and the 2003 self-titled "Liz Phair" album, which spawned the singles "Extraordinary" and "Why Can't I?", a top 40 single.

In 2018, Matador Records released "Girly-Sound to Guyville: The 25th Anniversary Box Set," which included a remastered version of the original album and restored versions of Phair's Girly-Sound tapes. In her review of the box set, Pitchfork's Amanda Petrusich wrote, "Exile remains a kind of sanctified codex for girls: The map that pointed us toward adulthood, or something like it."

Liz Phair' to play "Exile In Guyville" in its entirety on tour

Creative director Kevin Newbury ( "Kansas City Choirboy" ) is helping Phair with staging the album's songs for added visual dynamics. "This is, in a way, an unrequited love story, which I hope to add some theatrical elements that will illustrate that a little more," she said.

"Guyville" may certainly lend itself to such treatment. The songs "have a different quality musically," Phair said. "It's almost intimate and confessional. And it has an intensity, a drive in the music."

And the music remains compelling because it captures a young adult's feelings, concerns – and, sometimes, anger – at confronting the real world. "This may be what resonates so much right now with young people," Phair said. "That record encapsulates that experience that a lot of us have, in that suspended reality between childhood and adulthood."

Millennials and Generation Z listeners may relate with uncertainty and doubts because, she said, they "have been saddled with a lot of problems that were created before their time and there's resentment and that feeling like I felt when I made 'Guyville,' just like what do you do when you're sentient beneath these forces that are implacable and immutable?"

Liz Phair, on making music after 'Guyville'

In addition to releasing the albums "Somebody's Miracle" in 2005 and "Funstyle" in 2010, Phair spent several years in the mid-2000s spent writing music for television series such as "Swingtown," "The 100," "In Plain Sight" and "90210," the spin-off launched in 2008.

The experience gave her "a new perspective on music," Phair said. "Now, I understand that the song I'm writing musically, should be able to tell the same story the lyrics are, and occasionally you can even counteract that, but it makes a much more powerful experience. Scoring television was hugely impactful in terms of soundscapes, the way I keep trying to incorporate ambient noises and the complexity of the product that I'm attracted to, that all comes from television scoring."

Phair's most recent album "Soberish," released in 2021, "brings to mind the glory of 'Guyville' and its 1994 follow-up, 'Whip-Smart,' without feeling at all like self-conscious recapitulation," Rolling Stone's Jon Dolan said .

For that album, she reconnected with Brad Wood, who had produced Phair's first three albums. Listening to her earlier songs in preparation for the 2018 box set release, she "was transported back to that person I used to be. ... I needed more of her to come into the me that is now and I knew that Brad was the only person who could do that."

Wood, who has produced numerous artists including the Bangles, Pete Yorn and Veruca Salt, "is musically sensitive," Phair said, "the best producer to work with in terms of getting what you hear in your head down on tape."

These days, Phair is writing new music, too, and also working on a second memoir, a follow-up to 2019's "Horror Stories."As part of the ongoing 30th anniversary festivities, Matador Records has just released “ Miss Lucy ," a song recorded during the "Exile in Guyville" sessions, but left off the album (an early demo version was included on "Girly-Sound to Guyville"). Matador will also reissue "Exile in Guyville" on limited-edition purple vinyl on October 20 (pre-order on matadorrecords.com ).

The 30th anniversary tour might help Phair "connect the circle … to get the young musically intuitive person back with the older, wiser, more battle scarred professional, I guess," she said. "I want the ingénue back."

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Singer-songwriter and alt-rock icon Liz Phair is celebrating the 30th anniversary of her influential and critically beloved debut album “Exile in Guyville” with a fall tour that will end with a show at TempleLive at Cleveland Masonic on Saturday, December 9. Opening the show will be singer-songwriter Kate Bollinger. Tickets go on sale date at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 25 at TempleLive.com .

Phair’s “Exile in Guyville” loosely constructed as an answer to the Rolling Stones ramshackle classic “Exile on Main Street,” is widely considered one of the best and most influential albums of the ‘90s and a seminal feminist musical tome.

For the anniversary tour, Phair will be performing “Exile in Guyville” in its entirety with a full band. Additionally, in October, hardcore Phair and vinyl fans will be able to add a limited edition purple vinyl edition of the double album to their collections.

Liz Phair to Play ‘Exile in Guyville’ in Its Entirety on New Tour

  • By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Liz Phair will mark the 30th anniversary of her landmark debut album, Exile in Guyville , with a new tour this fall, where she will play the album in its entirety — alongside additional hits — backed by a full band. The 18-city trek kicks off on Nov. 7 in El Cajon, California at The Magnolia with stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Nashville, and more, culminating in Dallas on Dec. 3 at Majestic Theatre.

And while the neighborhood is more baby stroller than thriving indie scene these days, Phair’s LP remains a definitive soundtrack for twentysomething women living in a male-dominated space while navigating the crushed-out relationships of early adulthood — where lust and love and fucked-up entanglements intertwine in a raw, lo-fi yearning for understanding.

“ Guyville has been in our lives for 30 years and it is time to look at it with a fresh perspective. The themes that were so provocative and shocking in 1993 sometimes feel even more relevant today,” Phair tells Rolling Stone . “So many people have asked me how this album relates to the Rolling Stones’ album [ Exile on Main St. ]. I made myself into the girl that Mick Jagger was talking about and talking to. It is a love story, a hate story, a fuck story, but ultimately it is a story about understanding and forgiveness.”

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

“Despite its low-fi production,  Exile in Guyville  roams giddily all over the pop landscape,” Rolling Stone wrote at the time. “On ‘Fuck and Run,’ Phair, who lives in Chicago, manages to sound both wistful and pissed off. On ‘6’1” and ‘Mesmerizing’ she’s banging out chords that Keith Richards might admire. Folkie mood pieces (‘Dance of the Seven Veils’) and spooky piano nocturnes (‘Canary’) rub up against Patti Smith-style dialogues (‘Flower’) and psychedelic whiteouts (‘Gunshy’).”

Phair also toured behind the 25th anniversary of “Exile in Guyville” in 2018, albeit in what Variety described at the time as a “mini-tour” in smaller venues joined only by an accompanying guitarist. Variety reviewed her 2018 concert at the 150-seat Masonic Hall at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, “a venue she could have easily sold out several times over (as scalper prices clearly indicated). … This is, in short, the mini-tour of O.G. Phair fans’ dreams… even if most have to just dream about getting a ticket.” Phair hit the road later that year in bigger halls with a full-band show that was not as extensively dedicated to the debut album. That same year, the “Exile” album was celebrated with a boxed set, “Girly-Sound to Guyville,” with dozens of demos she recorded in the run-up to her debut.

Since the 25th anniversary, Phair has released a memoir, 2019’s “Horror Stories” (which she also did a brief book reading/tour behind), and a new album, 2021’s “Soberish,” which Variety named one of the year’s 10 best.

Live reviews

Liz Phair's music has a wide and continuously-spanning appeal. You could expect to find a middle aged music nerd attending the show (think of John Cusack from High Fidelity - the actor is actually a diehard fan) or you could just as likely find a middle school girl right next to the stage screaming the lyrics to her hit "Extraordinary".

Though her career has always managed to stay within the confines of the "woman singer-songwriter" genre she has exploited every avenue of this style. There is no better way to grasp the breadth of Liz's catalogue of music other than going to one of her concerts. Though Liz's career has shifted into a much more commercial and pop oriented direction she still acknowledges the importance of her early material. Actually a large part of her live material consists of songs from her "Whip-Smart" album and "Exile In Guyville" (sometimes she plays this album in its entirety!)

At her show you could hear Liz performing such musically stripped down and emotionally raw songs as "Fuck and Run" or pop radio chart toppers like "Why Can't I". You will find fans there for her early career and those who are inspired by the success as a pop star. I happen to enjoy both ends of the spectrum. In any case it is obvious that they are there because they recognize the talent of Liz Phair and in spite of her fluctuations in style each audience member will not be let down.

Some friends gave us their tickets so we went. I think the friends made the better choice.

The concert was sort of like a mediocre Liz Phair cover band lurching through her greatest hits after having missed a lot of practices.

She clearly doesn't have the energy or vocal chops of 25 years ago, which is understandable, but instead of having a band behind her that picked up some of the slack, this backing band dragged her down the abyss.

The mix didn't help things either; if you're going to have an insipid drummer and do-nothing bassist, then hide them in the mix, don't crank them up so they drown out everything else out as they attempt to rock out.

The highlights of the show were a new song that was much more a match for where she's at now, and a wonderful number where they kicked all but one of the band members off the stage, brought out the guitar tech on guitar, and she sang a duet with the remaining band-member. That was a sweet moment.

I've been a huge fan of Liz Phair since the 90's but have never seen her live. This show happened to be a Book signing for her first book, "Horror Stories."

The night started of with a reading, great Q and A session and then book signing where you could take a picture and get a personalized signing. Then after a half hour break, we reconveined back to the hall and the show started. She was fantastic and what a great band she's put together. Total pros. They played well over an hour and must have played 11-12 songs.

She's very charismatic and funny in between songs and overall put on a really fun show. If you're a fan and have a chance to see her, I highly recommend.

Show was sold out and I didn’t get in because they weren’t selling tickets at the door even though it said online that they would be. I should’ve sprang when I got the notification when the presale happened. Also I called the venue multiple times and left messages asking if there would indeed be tickets at the door and they never got back to me. Live and learn I guess.

Hmmm not sure who did the soundcheck....but too much reverb in her mic channel.

Sounded way better last time I saw her at Bowery Ballroom.

(This said.....really like the Brooklyn Steel venue, first time I'd been there, nice setup).

Liz Phair wants to “Make America Girly Again”

Singer-songwriter and alt.rock icon, Liz Phair has announced a 25-date US tour for this fall, following the announcement of the reissue of her seminal early albums: Girly-Sound to Guyville: The 25th Anniversary Box Set .

Kicking off on 6 September at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse, the tour promises to “Make America Girly Again” and sees Phair playing clubs, theatres and some festival dates that includes the Majestic Theatre in Detroit, the 9:30 club in Washington DC and two dates in Canada, that concludes on 12 October at Milwaukee’s Turner Hall Ballroom.

Phair is currently touring the US in support of the reissues of her early tapes: Yo Yo Buddy Yup Yup Word , Ya Muthuh , Girls! Girls! Girls! , Sooty and her ground-breaking Exile In Guyville , which were re-mastered and collected as part of the box reissue. The 8-date tour instantly sold out, so fans will get another chance to catch Phair on the road and with a full backing band.

Liz Phair - Extraordinary (Alternative Version)

Looking back at the impact Guyville and her sexual frankness had on pop culture, Phair recently told The Independent :

“I think it gave a lot of people permission to do it: to say here’s my facade, but there’s a lot going on underneath the surface. Maybe I played a part in people having the courage to do it. I think there were a number of people like PJ Harvey or Tori Amos who popped up at the same time who took what had been a punk impulse and an indie wave came out of it. The women who were participating in the indie wave saw the way the men were doing it and started doing it as well. But very few of us. There were very few of us at the time.”

Phair also has a new album in the works, with Ryan Adams signed on as a collaborator and a forthcoming memoir on the way. On the subject of her book, she told The Independent , “In 2016, we felt like all these legendary musicians were dying, I felt like I had a lot more to say than I could put in a song”.

Tickets for Amps On The Lawn tour go on pre-sale Wednesday, 16 May, with public sales beginning Friday, 18 May and VIP tickets will also be available.
