Icefiord Cruise in Disko Bay

The beautiful scenery.

Ilulissat Glacier (Sermeq Kujalleq) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. Every day, millions of tonnes of ice flow from the glacier through Ilulissat Icefjord (Kangia) and into Disko Bay. The result is huge icebergs which majestically soar high above sea level. At the mouth of the ice fjord these giants are stranded, so here you have the opportunity to sail around the icebergs and admire their beauty.

The icebergs are an impressive sight in all kinds of weather. In the sunshine its the contrasts, in cloudy weather the blue shades emerge very beautifully, and in the low rays of the evening sun, the icebergs are painted a unique hue which entices visitors back to Ilulissat to experience it again.

From 21 May to 24 July, Ilulissat falls under the spell of the midnight sun. An evening boat ride in the golden glow of the midnight sun is also an incredibly special experience which you should definitely treat yourself to if visiting in summer.

Dog resting in Uummannaq, Greenland

Join an epic adventure in Greenland and experience summer in the Arctic on our classic Disko Bay voyage. Marvel at gigantic icebergs, meet the locals and experience Inuit culture and witness the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ilulissat Icefjord.

Embark our state-of-the-art vessel Ocean Albatros for an adventure through West Greenland. Travelling by sea is without doubt the best way to experience Greenland, where life  has been governed by the waves, ice and tides since time immemorial. From colourful coastal villages to bustling miniature cities, glaciers and icebergs to fjords and towering mountains, we combines the highlights of this magnificent land into one epic voyage.

Even in the larger towns we visit, Arctic nature is never far away. A few minutes walk away from the colourful houses, visitors can find themselves utterly alone, surrounded by wilderness a rarity in our busy modern world. Life in Greenland moves at a different pace, following the rhythms of the sea, the tides and the midnight sun. The local culture, architecture and lifestyle are all governed by the harsh yet beautiful conditions of the Arctic. During the voyage, meet the friendly locals of Greenland to discover more about their ancient culture.

Our adventure begins in Greenland's transport hub of Kangerlussuaq, before visiting nearby Sisimiut, Greenland's bustling second city. From here we venture northwards, to the sweeping basalt mountains and weird rock formations of Qeqertarsuaq, and onwards to Uummannaq, our northernmost point on the 'Greenlandic Riviera'. We then head southwards into the heart of Disko Bay, witnessing the astounding spectacle of Eqip Sermia Glacier, before arriving in Ilulissat, Greenland's most visited town. Simply meaning 'Icebergs' in Greenlandic, Ilulissat is home to the mind-boggling UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ilulissat Icefjord, a vast fjord choked with ice produced by the northern hemisphere's largest glacier. Nowehere else in the world can you experience such incredible icebound scenery along with friendly local hospitality. From Ilulissat, we will return to Kangerlussuaq via the small village of Itilleq, where visitors can experience the hunting and fishing traditions by which locals still thrive.

Utilising Ocean Albatros' fleet of Zodiacs, nowhere is off limits to us. With the ability to land in small villages or lonely beaches, we can access even the most remote locations. Witness Arctic nature from the superlative comfort of Ocean Albatros, as we follow the whales and seals along the coast of this remarkable island. Experience with us!

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland - Embarkation

On the first day of our expedition, we board our chartered flights in Keflavik, Iceland or Copenhagen, Denmark, bound for Kangerlussuaq on the west coast of Greenland (both flight options are a vailable, please contact us for more information).

Situated at the head of a 160km long fjord of the same name, Kangerlussuaq is Greenland's only inland town, and was established as Sondrestrom Air Base/Bluie West-8 by American troops in 1941. Existing largely to service the airport, the town of Kangerlussuaq itself retains a strong 'Cold War' feeling, hinting at its extensive American military use before it was signed over to the Greenlandic Government in 1992. Today Kangerlussuaq is Greenland's largest air hub, with flights arriving daily from Denmark and around the country. It's stable climate and lack of fog makes it ideal as an airport, but it exhibits some of the most varied temperatures in the country, commonly registering the highest summer and lowest winter temperatures due to its inland location.

Upon arrival in Kangerlussuaq, you will be transported to the small port located west of the airport, where the Ocean Albatros awaits at anchor. Zodiacs will transfer us the short distance to the ship, where you will be checked in to your stateroom. After the mandatory safety drill, enjoy dinner and a glass of champagne as we set sail a course for adventure through the 160-kilometre Kangerlussuaq fjord.

Sisimiut - Greenland's Second City

After breakfast, Ocean Albatros will arrive in the colourful city of Sisimiut. With around 5,400 inhabitants, it is Greenland’s second largest city, and one of the most interesting to explore. Paleo-Inuit people have lived around Sisimiut on and off since 2,500 BC, arriving in waves of migration from Arctic Canada. Remnants of turf huts and tent camps from this time can be found thorughout the vast back country which surrounds Sisimiut, including on Tele Island, a short pleasant walk from the harbour.

In 1756, Count Johan Ludvig Holstein established a colony here and called it “Holsteinsborg”. The oldest part of Sisimiut features town houses from this era, and the oldest dates back to 1756. One of the most culturally significant buildings is the Blue Church, built in 1775, now a landmark in the city’s historical museum district, arguably the best preserved in Greenland, and the perfect place to discover the Greenland of old.

Nowadays, Sisimiut is an important hub of education and industry, and local factories process the bulk of fish caught in the country (Greenland’s largest export). The fish processing plant in the harbour is one of the largest in Greenland, and among the most modern in the world. Just beyond the harbour sits the headquarters of KNI, the government-operated company which resupplies the many small settlements throughout Greenland - a vital service in a country with so many remote communties.

The busy city centre of Sisimiut offers a glimpse of what daily life is like in 21st-century Greenland, where seal hunts and smartphones collide. Take a refreshing stroll around Spedjesø and take in an exhibition at the city's cultural centre, explore the region's fascinating heritage at the city museum, or visit the Artists Workshop, where savvy shoppers can purchase traditional artworks direct from the artist. As evening falls, we will leave Sisimiut and set a course for the iceberg studded waters of Disko Bay (Qeqertarsuup Tunua) as Ocean Albatros sails for Qeqertarsuaq.

Qeqertarsuaq, Disko Island

Nestled below Disko Island’s 1,000-metre mountains, we pull into port in a beautifully sheltered natural harbour. The place was aptly named Godhavn (“Good Harbour”) in Danish, while its Greenlandic name “Qeqertarsuaq” simply means “The Big Island”.

For most of Greenland’s modern history, Godhavn was the political and economic capital of North Greenland (while Godthåb, now Nuuk, served this role in Southern Greenland). Its importance was due to the vast economic activity generated by whaling in Disko Bay, the preeminent Arctic industry since the 16th Century. As the whaling industry collapsed in the early 1900s, Godhavn lost its political status as all government functions moved south to Godthåb/Nuuk, and the town was forced to reinvent itself, changing its name to Qeqertarsuaq in 1979 . Today, hunting and fishing are the main industries in Qeqertarsuaq, while tourism is becoming increasingly important. Ferries arrive in the town daily in summer from around Disko Bay, while in winter, access is only by helicopter from nearby Ilulissat.

Qeqertarsuaq’s sweeping red-and-black basalt mountains are radically different to the rolling granite hills which characterize much of Greenland, and provide a much richer soil. Despite being situated well above the Arctic Circle, this rich volcanic soil and the area’s mild microclimate make it much more green and lush compared to the rest of the country. Locals from all over Disko Bay come to the island in summer to hunt and collect angelica, herbs and mushrooms, and the stunning rock formations and black sand beaches attract visitors from all over the world. The town itself is typically Greenlandic, with quaint multicoloured homes, a splendid museum, and the unique octagonal church nicknamed 'God's Inkpot' (built in the Norwegian stave style). With excellent hiking opportunities, friendly locals, and a fascinating place in regional history, Qeqertarsuaq has a lot to offer. From here, we set sail along the edge of  Disko Bay towards Uummannaq.

Uummannaq - the Greenlandic Riviera

The small city of Uummannaq sits perched precariously at the foot of a massive mountain. Like the rest of the area, here the mountain reaches vertically out of the icy depths, punching 1170m into the clear blue sky. Uummannaq mountain (translated from Greenlandic as “heart shaped”) is a true Greenlandic icon, and is a mecca for climbers who visit from all over the world. The city itself occupies a small area of flatter ground at the foot of the mountain, founded by Danish colonists in 1763 – some of the original buildings from this era can still be visited in the harbour-front area. More recently, Uummannaq has become famous in Scandinavia as the home of Santa Claus – the small turf house belonging to the festive hero himself can be reached via a pleasant (if challenging) 2-3h hike out of town.

As for many towns in Greenland however, the Inuit history of the area reaches back much further. At some point around the year 1600, a group of Inuit women and children died in the area (possibly in a boating accident). They were lovingly laid to rest in a rocky cairn under a cliff on the mainland overlooking Uummannaq at a site called Qilakitsoq, protected from the rain and snow, but exposed to the dry Arctic wind which mummified their bodies. They were rediscovered in 1972 by two brothers from Uummannaq (possibly on the advice of elders in Uummannaq, who had preserved rumours of the site for centuries). The mummies were taken to Denmark for analysis before being returned to Greenland, where today they rest in the National Museum in Nuuk. The small museum in Uummannaq did not have the facilities to house such an important find, but several artefacts such as clothing from the archaeological site (as well as a plethora of finds from before, during and after the Qilakitsoq period) are displayed, along with a cabinet of curiosities from the city’s brief mining boom.

Uummannaq itself is a lively little town. Expect to see enterprising locals selling handicrafts in the grassy town square, while others sell their catch in the local fish market - always a fascinating sight. Watch fishermen bait their long lines as they head out in search of halibut, or load up with provisions for hunting trips deep into the vast fjordlands outside town.

Ensure you are on Ocean Albatros’ outer decks during our sail-out from Uummannaq – the deep clear blue iceberg-studded waters of the fjord and the dramatic vertical mountains around the city offer some of the best views in Greenland. With a calm microclimate and round-the-clock summer sunshine, not for nothing is this staggeringly beautiful area nicknamed the Greenlandic Riviera!

Eqip Sermia Glacier

From Uummannaq, we return to the heart of Disko Bay, setting sail towards Eqip Sermia.

Eqip Sermia (a typically descriptive Greenlandic name meaning 'the Glacier at the End of the Fjord') is a relatively small glacier compared to many in Greenland, although it is still a truly vast river of ice, flowing directly from the Greenland Ice Sheet. It is also one of the most active, and ice tumbles off the vast glacier-front almost constantly. Watching the vast cataracts of ice fall into the ocean is a sight which has to be seen to be believed - and the comfortable viewing decks of Ocean Albatros offer the best possible platform to do so... Perhaps with a specially crafted cocktail in hand!

From Eqip Sermia, we will reposition slightly southwards during the evening towards Ilulissat, the largest city in Disko Bay and the Iceberg Capital of the World. Depending on the local sea and ice conditions, we may arrive in Ilulissat in time to come ashore and see the Icefjord at sunset - one of Greenland's greatest spectacles.

Ilulissat - optional Airzafari ride or boat trip to the Ice Fjord

This is it. This is why visitors from all over the world come to Greenland. Translated from Kalaallisut simply as ‘icebergs’, Ilulissat is rightly known the world over as ‘the Iceberg Capital of the World’. Surely no other city on Earth occupies such a spectacular natural setting.

Situated within a short walk of the harbour lies Ilulissat Icefjord, Greenland’s most famous site. Choked with city-sized icebergs so closely packed one could almost walk across to the other side, Ilulissat Icefjord stretches 70 km from its outlet in Disko Bay near the city of Ilulissat back to the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. This is the single largest glacier on Earth outside Antarctica, draining 13% of the Greenland Ice Sheet, and producing 10% of all the ice in the Northern Hemisphere (enough water to supply the annual needs of the entire United States). These mind-blowing statistics, together with the indescribably beautiful scenery, have secured the Ilulissat Icefjord designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While archaeological finds detail the long Inuit habitation of the area, the modern town has steadily flourished in the 280 years since its establishment; legendary Arctic explorer, Knud Rasmussen was born in Ilulissat, and his childhood home now houses the city museum. Today, Ilulissat is Greenland’s third largest town, with more than 4,500 inhabitants, and is undoubtedly Greenland’s tourism capital, with more hotel rooms than even Nuuk. The city offers excellent amenities to visitors, with fresh locally caught seafood served in the city’s cafes and restaurants, and excellent shopping – look out especially for the Artist’s Workshop above the harbour, where you can buy handmade artworks direct from the artist. The city typically experiences dry sunny weather throughout the summer, and there are a variety of well-marked hiking routes around the Icefjord, with options to suit all abilities.

During the visit you will have the opportunity to join a boat trip with a local captain to the Icefjord (optional excursion – charge applies). The journey takes about two and a half hours and is considered the best way to experience the magic of Ilulissat Icefjord up close. If a hike or a trip by boat does not present enough excitement, there is also the opportunity to join a flightseeing excursion in fixed-wing aircraft over the Icefjord (optional excursion – charge applies).

Please note the boat and flight excursions to the Ice fjord are not included in the general tour price. Refer to Price Information for further details.

The settlement of Itilleq

The settlement of Itilleq, which translates roughly as "the Crossing Place from the Sea” nestles at the foothills of the mountains and and fjords which line central Greenland's backcountry. Situated just north of the Arctic Circle, Itilleq is one of the many tiny villages dotting the coast of Greenland. The settlement is situated in the heart of the Aassivisuit-Nipisat UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed due to its ancient Inuit hunting heritage, documenting the entire habitation history of Greenland.

While the turf houses and hide tents have been replaced by colourful modern houses, the lifestyle here has changes little since the Inuit first arrived in Greenland. The local highways are the water and the ice, and the sea and tundra continue to nourish the locals, as they has for thousands of years. Arctic char, reindeer and muskoxen are typical catches, and are all plentiful in the area.

Despite this ancient heritage, locals in Itilleq are still firmly in the modern world, with smartphones, speedy wifi and satellite TV. However, the people of Itilleq remain justly proud of their ancient heritage, and continue to move their culture forward in a modern fast paced world. Locals are pleased to show off their picturesque town, and visitors are greeted with typical warm Greenlandic hospitality.

After departing Itilleq, we will head slightly south and enter the 160km-long Kangerlussuaq Fjord.

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland - Disembarkation

During the night, we will sail up the 160-kilometer/100 mile Kangerlussuaq Fjord. After breakfast aboard the ship, we will bid a fond farewell to the ship's crew, Expedition Team and fellow travellers before shuttling ashore by Zodiac.

Due to Kangerlussuaq’s military history and present-day role as an important air travel hub, Kangerlussuaq remains fairly isolated from Greenland’s rich cultural traditions, in comparison to other regions. While you still find cultural experiences when visiting Kangerlussuaq, the most impressive attraction is the surrounding nature, which is just beckoning to be explored. The town itself was largely constructed by the American military in the 1950s, and this small airport town has retained something of its Cold War atmosphere. Your Arctic adventure and time in Greenland concludes as we board the flight from Kangerlussuaq back to Reykjavik, Iceland or Copenhagen, Denmark.

After leaving the airport town of Kangerlussuaq, your expedition vessel will proceed onwards into Greenland to explore the unknown. The goal for the days spent exploring in Greenland is to offer activities which will allow everyone to explore off the ship as much as possible, and experience the nature, settlements and culture of Greenland in person.

Our activities in Greenland will vary widely according to the nature of the locations we visit – some larger settlements need an entire day to explore, whereas some smaller villages can be seen in a few hours. Greenland is Earth’s largest island, and on any itinerary in this region, travel time between destinations can be significant. Activities we offer include landings, Zodiac cruises and ship cruises. Regulations in Greenland limit the number of people ashore at any time at certain natural and historical sites, so we will usually aim to offer a Zodiac cruise while our first group of guests are ashore, and reverse this for the second group ashore to maximise exploration time where numerical limits apply. In towns and cities where the environment is less sensitive, there are no limits on numbers of people ashore. No matter the day’s planned activities, the onboard Expedition Team and Expedition Leader will work as hard as possible in conjunction with the Captain and Crew to maximize exploration opportunities.

A “typical” expedition day in Greenland may look like this (subject to weather and sea conditions and sailing schedule):

  • 06:45: Wake-up call
  • 07:00-08:00: Breakfast
  • 08:30-11:30: Morning activity – arrival in port at anchor, Zodiac ashore to explore Greenlandic settlements, historical sites etc. Depending on the location, we may spend the whole day in port.
  • 12:30-13:30: Lunch onboard
  • 14:30-17:30: Afternoon Activity – Either in connection with the morning, or at a different site, depending on itinerary
  • 18:30-19:30: Evening Recap with Expedition Team
  • 19:30: Dinner

Landings are a great opportunity to stretch your legs and set foot on shore to visit the towns and cities of Greenland and experience Arctic nature first-hand. Our experienced Expedition Team will be on shore to help you spot any wildlife, identify the different species of birds and mammals, guide you through Greenlandic settlements, as well as keep our guests safe on shore from any potential hazards.

We remind our guests that Greenland is a truly wild destination, to consider their physical capability when travelling in the country. In smaller towns and villages, infrastructure for tourism may be less well developed than in other destinations. Most smaller towns and villages lack step-free access, and roads and paths can often be steep and uneven.

Some sites do not offer landing opportunities, but are locations where exploring on the water offers the best opportunities for sightseeing, wildlife and photography. These Zodiac cruise sites are often known for their concentration of ice, wildlife and even historical landmarks such as Inuit or Norse ruins, where our fleet of Zodiacs offer the best vantage point. This would be the only scenario you may have to wait on the ship (other than in adverse weather conditions), but we will always aim to offer an onboard program during this time, such as seminars given by our knowledgeable and experienced Lecturer team. Zodiac cruises are great for observing icebergs, glaciers, whales, and other marine wildlife. Your skilled driver will navigate around the area looking for wildlife and beautiful landscapes. By the end of the voyage, Zodiac cruises tend to become a firm favourite among our guests because of the vast diversity of scenery and marine life it is possible to experience.

In the event we encounter bad weather or are in a particularly spectacular location, often our purpose-built expedition vessels are the best viewing platform. The Captain and Expedition Leader will search for locations best accessed with the vessel to seek out the best wildlife and scenery. We encourage everyone to bundle up and either head onto the outer decks with the Expedition Team or relax in superlative comfort in our specially-designed lounges to experience the majesty of the Arctic from the best vantage point. During this time, our Expedition Team specialists will offer skillfully-crafted lectures related to the wildlife, history, culture and conservation of the region, and more!

Other activities onboard include our ship Gym, where you can burn some calories on our fitness bicycles or treadmills; most of our ships even have other cardio machines and strength/lifting options. Most voyages throughout the season also offer kayaking (booked and paid onboard – weather permitting), and we will often aim to offer hiking excursions onshore when possible. Our new purpose-built ships have a Spa, in which guests can enjoy massages, facials, and other relaxing treatments (additional cost applies). Our Library is a great place to rest between outings, with expansive views and a wide selection of Arctic-related reading material. During your voyage you will also be able to enjoy our tea time in the late afternoon, or indulge in some retail therapy in our onboard shop, which sells personal necessities as well as specially-selected Arctic souvenirs.

In between our landings and activities we offer three hearty daily main meals. Albatros Expeditions always have allergy flexible options, healthy selections as well as a variety of vegetarian and vegan options.

Our hardworking galley crew deliver multiple Breakfast options, served in a buffet style along with a cooking station where eggs are made to order.  At Lunch we are also met with a smorgasbord of mouthwatering choices. Safe to say you will have the energy for your next outing!

When it is Dinner time, you can choose to eat at the main restaurant or book a table at the Specialty Restaurant. Your evening meal is served a la carte, with fresh new options daily and always a selection of fixed items. There is always a vegetarian and pescetarian option available. Albatros Expeditions are known for our delicious menus and a variety of exquisite wine pairings.

Onboard you will also have the option to join Afternoon Tea with sweets, cakes or snacks served each afternoon. Albatros Expeditions have tea and coffee freely available all day throughout the vessel, while specialty coffee, alcoholic beverages and hand-crafted cocktails are available at the ship’s bars.

Spring comes late to Greenland, due to its challenging polar climate. During June, migratory wildlife begins to return to Greenland. Geese, wading birds, and seabirds arrive for their breeding season, constructing nests and defending their tiny but all-important territories. While Greenland experiences the midnight sun from May to August, during June, many of the fjords are still frozen, and snow reaches down to the sea. This cold and unpredictable weather can hamper exploration at times.

By July , Greenland begins to come to life. The tundra begins to come to life, as saxifrages, Arctic willows and heathers start to green the otherwise stark Arctic landscape.  Flowers bloom in the brief Arctic summer, rotating through the day to follow the precious sunlight. In wilderness areas, muskox and reindeer can be seen grazing on the fresh greenery, while inhabited locations burst to life. Locals in Greenland take advantage of the brief summer to harvest the ocean’s riches, and summer is prime fishing season. Conditions during July tend to be settled, with calm sunny days the norm (although beware of the mosquitos in windless areas)! Expect to meet plenty of locals – July is the middle of the summer holiday, so expect to see Greenlandic children enjoying their freedom on their bikes and skateboards. Many locals pivot to working in tourism during the brief summer season; even small towns can be bustling when a vessel visits!

August is the peak of the Arctic summer, with long sunny days – although the evenings start to draw in, with several hours of darkness by the end of the month. August is prime hunting season in Greenland – depending on the day, some settlements can be almost empty, with almost all locals heading into the wilderness to hunt reindeer, seals and muskox. Expect to see the fruits of these hunts for sale in local markets, usually proudly sold by local hunters. August is also peak trout season, so expect to see fish hung up to dry around towns and villages, or being smoked in small turf ovens. Most chicks have begun to fledge by this point, and are starting to leave the nest; for cliff-nesting species, this involves a terrifying leap off their nest into the sea – often known as ‘jumping season’. On land, the tundra plants are moving rapidly through their life cycle, and tart crowberries and delicious blueberries are almost everywhere – expect to see locals young and old alike gathering this delectable bounty; some is eaten as-is or used in baking, and the rest frozen to enjoy during the long winter.

The tundra is at its brightest during September , as the willows, then the saxifrages and heathers begin to show their autumn colours; an autumn forest in miniature! During September, the weather in the North Atlantic can become more challenging and wild, giving an even more rugged cast to this spectacular island. September marks the return of true dark nights to Greenland as autumn sets in. Frosts and even snow showers can occur this time of year, although the longer nights also offer a tantalising chance to see the Northern Lights. This time of year, most migratory birds are starting to head south or out to the open ocean for the winter, so expect to see a variety of birds of all ages heading to sea for winter.

Greenland is a vast island, stretching almost 3000km from north to south. The climate throughout Greenland is subsequently hugely varied, reflecting the variation in latitude.

Greenland’s west coast (including the Disko Bay region) tend to have a cooler but more stable climate than the south of the country. Expect temperatures between 8-12°C (46-54°F). These temperatures can be exceeded in sheltered areas, especially far up fjords – Kangerlussuaq, situated 160km inland for instance regularly records summer temperatures in excess of 20°C/68°F. The weather is generally calm and sunny, although cool rainy or foggy days do occur. It is very rare for snowfall or sub-zero temperatures to occur in summer, although this does occasionally happen.

We therefore remind our guests to be prepared for all weather conditions! We highly recommend to our guests to dress in layers (ideally in woolen or synthetic fibers) and a backpack so that layers can be adjusted as the weather dictates. Warm/waterproof layers, hats, waterproof gloves and scarves are recommended for all excursions off the vessel, even on the sunniest days – the weather can deteriorate rapidly at any time. Sun protection (hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm) is also essential – the low angle of the Arctic sun combined with cool ambient temperatures can cause sunburn to easily go unnoticed until it is too late!

Despite it's high latitude and cold weather, mosquitos and other insects can cause a real nuisance in Greenland during summer. Head nets, long sleeved clothing and repellant are essential for a comfortable experience in Greenland, and we highly advise guests joining this voyage to ensure they prepare for encounters with these tiny irritating Arctic animals!

Albatros Expedition strives to employ the very best Expedition Team in the whole industry. We travel in some of the planet’s most remote regions, where planning and on-location experience is key. Our routes and itineraries are subject to the prevailing sea, ice and wind conditions, which are closely monitored by the Bridge Team and Expedition Leader. Drawing on their vast experience, they find the best alternatives in the rare instances where our planned itinerary needs to be changed. Each cruise is a completely unique combination of locations, where the highlights can often be the totally unexpected. Most of our cruises provide the opportunity to spot a variety of unique wildlife, although this is subject to the whims of Mother Nature and can of course not be guaranteed. As you will no doubt experience, the joy from our Expedition Team when spotting different species on land or at sea is as genuine as your own.

This means that you as our guest are part of an adventure, a true expedition, where plans change, wildlife is encountered on their terms and your team consists of the very best experts within their fields. We strive to maintain a mix of specialists within relevant polar subjects including marine biology, ornithology, earth science, history and others. Albatros Expeditions boast a large number of Expedition Staff onboard, allowing us to maintain a high ratio of staff-to-guests at 1:8, amongst the highest ratios in expedition cruising. Some of our staff have decades of experience on ships or research stations, whilst others may be performing their first season. One thing they all have in common is the wish to make each and every journey a special and memorable experience for our guests. Knowledge, skill, and passion are the trademarks of all Albatros Expedition Staff.

To ensure the safety and quality of experience of our guests, please keep in mind that the itinerary and outdoor activities during each voyage are solely dependent on weather and sea conditions. Your safety is our highest priority. The route and shore landings will be determined by the Captain and Expedition Leader and communicated to guests through regularly scheduled briefings. Albatros Expeditions reserves the right to modify the landings and locations visited during a voyage based on local weather conditions and climate to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all our guests. Our voyages are expeditionary in nature, and thus changes to timings are commonplace due to the environment we operate in, as well as wildlife opportunities and locations.

Small Ships

Access remote places whilst enjoying a safe and friendly atmosphere onboard

Sail along the remote and dramatic Arctic coastline of West Greenland, where the magnificent scenery of high mountains, narrow fjords, giant glaciers and small settlements are just some of the highlights of this unforgettable experience.

Along the way you’ll visit the famous Disko Bay and the towns of Uummannaq and Ilulissat, also known as the iceberg capital of the world. Explore small towns and tiny settlements with colourful houses, learn about Inuit culture and meet the locals over coffee and cake, a tradition called ‘Kaffemik’. Keep a look out for whales and other marine life as you take advantage of long daylight hours for early morning and late evening wildlife spotting.

Accommodation

Ocean albatros.

With a maximum of 169 passengers, the Ocean Albatross has been specifically designed for Polar expedition cruising, with an observation platform, plus an observation restaurant and lounge for maximising both iceberg spotting and wildlife viewing.

Take a morning flight from Copenhagen or Reykjavik to Kangerlussuaq in western Greenland. On arrival transfer to the port and then by zodiac to board the ship. After a safety drill, enjoy your dinner as you set sail through the 160-kilometre Kangerlussuaq fjord.

Morning arrival in the colourful and modern town of Sisimiut at the foot of Nasaasaaq Mountain. Sisimiut is the second largest town in Greenland with 5,400 inhabitants. The city tour highlights include the historic colonial quarter, as well as museum and church visits. In the afternoon continue northbound passing the Sisimiut Isortuat Fjord, the Nordre Strømfjord settlements of Attu and Ikerasaarsuk and the small town of Kangaatsiaq. During the night, pass Aasiaat and proceed into the southern waters of Disko Bay.

Today there will be time to explore Disko Island, famous for its distinctive 1,000-meter layered crags. Wander around the town of Qeqertarsuaq and join some of the locals for a traditional ‘Kaffemik’ to sample homemade cakes with coffee and tea, accompanied by local music and dance.

At almost 600km north of the Arctic Circle, the town of Uummannaq is situated on a small island in one of Greenland’s most beautiful and sunny regions. Take the time to explore the towns steep streets and historic buildings. Enjoy an extraordinary vista comprising the island’s 1,000-meter tall rock faces and the snow-covered peaks on the Nuussuaq peninsula to the south.

Cruise to the breathtakingly beautiful Eqip Sermia Glacier to observe icebergs calving off this enormous icecap. Back on board the ship, enjoy lunch on the sun deck with this magnificent wonder in the background. In the afternoon, head for Ilulissat for an evening walk to the Sermermiut plain.

Arrival in the town of Ilulissat where gigantic icebergs flow down the UNESCO-protected Icefjord to the bay and linger in these Arctic waters. It is easy to explore the Icefjord, located just a half hour hike south of Ilulissat. There is also an opportunity to take an optional 2.5 hour boat trip (additional cost) to the Icefjord and get up close to the amazing ice-sculpted scenery. Alternatively take a flight on a fixed wing plane (additional cost) over the glacier and the Icefjord for an aerial view.

Nestled at the foothills of mountains and fjords, just north of the Arctic Circle, the name of the remote settlement of Itilleq translates as “the crossing place from the sea”. Residents still make their living from traditional Inuit practices of hunting, trapping and fishing. Preserving their traditions and Inuit heritage is very important for this community. Explore this fascinating place before boarding the ship for the cruise back to Kangerlussuaq, enjoying panoramic views of high mountains and deep valleys along the way.

As we cruise through the icy waters, you will be able to see through the crystal clear waters. I would recommend this tour based on the the quality of conversations and curation related to glaciers and their ecological importance to the the region. Much care was taken in terms of passenger safety onboard. Perhaps the guide could make the experience a lot more inclusive by getting guests to introduce themselves and their country of origin. I regret to say that throughout the trip, the 3 guides appear only keen to talk to an American couple. Some of us felt rather excluded.

This 8-day Greenland cruise explores Disko Bay, Uummannaq, and the Eqi Glacier. You will learn about climate change at the Danish Research Station, see the glaciers retreating, visit the charming town of Uummannaq, land a Zodiac at Eqi Sermia, visit Ilulissat, the "Iceberg Capital of the World," and experience Inuit culture in Sarfannguit.

8 Day Artic Itinerary

Day 1: kangerlussuaq, greenland - embarkation.

We will board our chartered flight in Keflavik (Iceland) or Copenhagen (Denmark), bound for Kangerlussuaq, on the West Coast of Greenland.

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland’s only inland city, is located at the mouth of a 160km-long fjord with the same name. It was founded by American forces in 1941 as Sondrestrom Air Base/Bluie West-8. Kangerlussuaq, which was built primarily to serve the airport, retains an air of the Cold War, a nod to its American military usage before being handed over to Greenland's government in 1992. Kangerlussuaq, Greenland’s biggest air hub today, is a daily arrival of flights from Denmark as well as other parts of the country. The airport is ideal because of its stable climate, lack of fog, and the wide range of temperatures it experiences.

After arriving in Kangerlussuaq you will be taken to a small harbor located just west of the Airport, where the expedition ship is waiting at anchor. Zodiacs take us to the small port where the expedition ship is anchored. Enjoy dinner with a glass or champagne after the safety drill. We will then set out on an adventure along the 160-kilometer Kangerlussuaq Fjord.

Day 2: Sisimiut - Greenland's second city

We will then arrive at the vibrant city of Sisimiut. Greenland’s second-largest city is home to around 5,400 residents, making it one of the best places to visit. Paleo Inuit have been living around Sisimiut since at least 2,500 BC. They arrived in waves from Arctic Canada. The remnants of tents and turf huts from that time are scattered throughout the backcountry surrounding Sisimiut. This includes Tele Island which is a pleasant stroll from the harbour.

Count Johan Ludvig Holstein founded a colony in 1756 and named it Holsteinsborg. In the oldest part of Sisimiut, you can find townhouses from that era. The oldest one dates to 1756. The Blue Church was built in Greenland in 1775 and is now one of the culturally most significant buildings. It's a prominent landmark within the historical museum district.

Sisimiut, Greenland’s biggest export, is a hub for education and industry. Local factories are responsible for processing the majority of the fish that has been caught. Fish processing plants are located in Greenland's harbour. The plant is among the biggest and most advanced in the world. KNI's headquarters are located just beyond the harbour. This government-owned company re-supplies small communities throughout Greenland.

Sisimiut's bustling city center offers an insight into the daily lives of Greenlanders in the 21st century, when smartphones and seal hunting collide. Visit the Artists Workshop to purchase original artworks directly from the artists. Or, take a stroll through Spedjeso, and enjoy an exhibit at the cultural center. Te expedition ship will sail to Qeqertarsuaq as the evening approaches. We'll leave Sisimiut, and head for Disko Bay with its icebergs.

Day 3: Qeqertarsuaq, Disko Island

We pull in to a natural harbour that is beautifully protected, nestled beneath the 1,000 metre high mountains of Disko Island. The Danish name for the place is Godhavn, which means Good Harbour. In Greenlandic it's "Qeqertarsuaq", or "The Big Island".

Godhavn served as the capital for most of Greenland’s modern history. Godthab (now Nuuk) was responsible for Southern Greenland. The economic importance of Disko Bay was due to its whaling industry, which has been the dominant Arctic activity since the 16th century. Godhavn's political importance was lost when the whale-fishing industry crashed in the early 1900s. All government functions were moved to Godthab/Nuuk. The town had to reinvent itself and change its name in 1979 to Qeqertarsuaq. Qeqertarsuaq's main industries are fishing and hunting, but tourism has become increasingly important. In summer, there are daily ferry services from Disko Bay to the town, but in winter only helicopters can reach it from Ilulissat.

The sweeping basalt hills of Qeqertarsuaq are very different from the granite-covered rolling hills that characterize most Greenland. They also provide much more fertile soil. The area is a lot greener and more lush than the rest of Greenland, despite being located well above the Arctic Circle. This rich volcanic soil combined with the mild microclimate makes it a much better place to live. In summer, locals come from Disko Bay to collect herbs, mushrooms and angelica. The stunning black sand beach and rock formations also attract tourists from around the globe. Greenlandic in nature, the town is full of colourful homes and a museum. It also has a unique octagonal shaped church, built according to the Norwegian stave design. Qeqertarsuaq is a town with a rich history and many hiking trails. We then set off along the shore of Disko Bay to Uummannaq.

Day 4: Uummannaq - The Greenlandic Riviera

Uummannaq, a small town in northern Canada, is perched on a precarious ledge at the base of a huge mountain. The mountain here reaches 1170m vertically from the depths of ice, just like the rest of this area. Uummannaq (translated from Greenlandic to "heart-shaped") mountain is an iconic Greenlandic landmark and a climbing mecca that attracts climbers from around the globe. In 1763, Danish colonists founded the city on a flat area at the base of the mountain. Some of these original buildings can be seen in the harbour front area. Uummannaq is now known in Scandinavia for being the birthplace of Santa Claus. The small turf home that Santa Claus lives in can be found after a 2 to 3 hour hike.

The Inuit heritage of Greenland stretches back further than many other towns. Around the year 1600, there was a death in the region of a group Inuit women and their children (possibly due to a boating incident). The bodies were mummified by the Arctic winds and rain, which was protected them from both. They were buried in a rock cairn on the mainland, overlooking Uummannaq. In 1972, two brothers in Uummannaq rediscovered the mummies (possibly at the insistence of Uummannaq elders who have preserved the rumours about the site over the centuries). They were sent to Denmark to be analyzed before returning to Greenland where they now rest at the National Museum of Nuuk. Uummannaq's small museum did not have enough space to display such an important discovery, but it does house a number of artifacts, including clothing, from the site, as well as finds dating back before, during, and after the Qilakitsoq era. It also houses a cabinet full of curious items from Uummannaq's short mining boom.

Uummannaq is an energetic little town. Locals will be selling their handicrafts on the town's grassy square. Others sell their catch at the fish market. Fishing boats will be anchored in the town square to lure halibut or hunters can load their fjordlands with supplies for hunting expeditions.

Be sure to be on the Ocean Albatros outer decks when we sail out from Uummannaq. The deep blue, iceberg studded waters and dramatic mountains surrounding the city provide some of Greenland's best views. This stunning area is not called the Greenlandic Riviera for nothing. It has a quiet microclimate with constant summer sun.

Day 5: Eqip Sermia Glacier

We return from Uummannaq to Disko Bay and sail toward Eqip Sermia.

Eqip sermia, a descriptive Greenlandic term meaning "the Glacier At The End Of Fjord", is relatively small compared with other glaciers in Greenland. However, it still represents a vast river of Ice flowing from the Greenland Ice Sheet. The glacier is one of the busiest in Greenland, with ice falling off almost continuously. Ocean Albatros' comfortable decks offer the perfect place to watch the ice cataracts fall.

We will then reposition ourselves slightly to the south during the night towards Ilulissat. This is the biggest city in Disko bay and the Iceberg Capital of the World. We may reach Ilulissat just in time for the Icefjord to be illuminated by the sunset, depending on local conditions.

Day 6: Ilulissat - Optional AirZafari ride or boat trip to the Ice Fjord

It's all here. Greenland is a popular destination for tourists from around the globe. Ilulissat, which translates from Kalaallisut as "icebergs", is known around the globe as the "Iceberg Capital of the World". No other city in the world has such an amazing natural environment.

Ilulissat Icefjord is located within walking distance of the harbour. It's Greenland’s most popular site. Ilulissat Icefjord is 70km long, stretching from the outlet of Disko Bay in the vicinity of Ilulissat to the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier. It's choked with icebergs the size and density that you could walk to the opposite side. It is the largest glacier outside of Antarctica. The glacier drains 13% of Greenland Ice Sheet and produces 10% of all ice found in the Northern Hemisphere. The Ilulissat Icefjord has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of these mind-boggling statistics and the breathtaking scenery.

Ilulissat is the third largest town in Greenland, with more than 4,500 residents. It has also become the tourism capital of the country, as it boasts more hotel rooms than Nuuk. Legendary Arctic Explorer, Knud Raasmussen, was born there, and the museum now occupies his childhood house. Ilulissat, Greenland’s third-largest town with over 4,500 residents, is Greenland’s tourism hub, boasting more hotel rooms that Nuuk. Visitors can enjoy the fresh seafood from local fishermen served at the cafes, restaurants and shopping. The summers are usually dry and sunny in the city. There is a wide range of hiking trails around Icefjord that can be adapted to all levels.

You will be able to take a trip on a boat with the local captain (optional - fee applies). This journey lasts about 2 1/2 hours, and it is the most effective way to see the Ilulissat Icefjord. There is an option to take a fixed-wing plane flight over the Icefjord if a boat trip or hike are not enough.

The price of the tour does not include the cost of boat or flight excursions. Please refer to Price Information.

Day 7: The settlement of Itilleq

Itilleq is a settlement nestled at the foothills and along the fjords that line the backcountry of central Greenland. Itilleq, located just north of Greenland's Arctic Circle is one of many small villages that dot the coastline. It is located in the Aassivisuit Nipisat UNESCO World Heritage Site. This site was inscribed because of its ancient Inuit hunter heritage.

The lifestyle has remained largely unchanged since Greenland's Inuit arrived. Although the hide tents and turf houses have been replaced with colourful, modern homes, there are still many similarities between the two. Local highways include the water and ice. The sea and tundra have continued to feed the locals for many thousands of years. Arctic chars, muskoxen, and reindeer are common catches.

Itilleq's residents are still very much in touch with the modern world despite their ancient history. They have smartphones, fast wifi, and satellite television. Itilleq's people are proud of their heritage and they continue to develop their culture in the fast-paced modern world. The locals love to showcase their beautiful town and welcome visitors with the warm Greenlandic Hospitality.

We will then head south, and we'll enter the 160km long Kangerlussuaq Fjord.

Day 8: Kangerlussuaq, Greenland - Disembarkation

We will be sailing up Kangerlussuaq Fjord, a 160 km/100 miles long fjord. We will say goodbye to our ship crew and Expedition Team before we take the Zodiacs ashore.

Kangerlussuaq is relatively isolated, compared to other Greenland regions, due to its military past and current role as a major air hub. Kangerlussuaq offers cultural activities, but the natural beauty of the area is what you'll remember most. This small airport town was built by the American Military in the 1950s and has kept some of the Cold War feel. We will board our flight back from Kangerlussuaq to Reykjavik in Iceland, or Copenhagen in Denmark, at the end of your Arctic adventure.

The newest addition to our fleet will honor the heritage of her namesake – the Norwegian explorer, scientist, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen. Known for his innovations in Arctic expeditions, Nansen led the first crossing of Greenland on cross-country skis. He is perhaps most famous for his attempt to reach the geographical North Pole during the Fram Expedition (1893-1896). Interestingly, after Nansen's Fram expedition, the ship was passed on to another great explorer who secretly planned an expedition to the South Pole - Roald Amundsen.

MS Maud, Norway. Photo: Oscar Farrera

MS Maud, previously MS Midnatsol, is named after one of the most famous polar vessels of all time, Roald Amundsen's 'Maud' from 1917. The original 'Maud' got her name from the first Queen of modern-day Norway. She also had her namesake in Hurtigruten Expedition’s 1925 flagship, DS Dronning Maud ('DS Queen Maud'). Today, MS Maud is equipped with advanced technology that makes her exceptionally well-suited for expedition cruises in Norway and the British Isles.

MS Spitsbergen

MS Spitsbergen is named after the crown jewel of Arctic Norway – the Svalbard archipelago and its biggest island, Spitsbergen. Hurtigruten has a long history of travelling to Spitsbergen, beginning in 1896 with the 'Sports Route'. After a complete reconstruction, MS Spitsbergen joined the Hurtigruten fleet in 2016. The ship features high technical standards as well as comfortable, modern public areas and cabins. She is modern and environmentally progressive and will undergo further improvements that will reduce emissions and fuel consumption even more. The new ship’s maneuverability and optimal size make her quite suitable for exploring polar waters.

I Just Took a Cruise to Disney’s Brand New Island Destination—Here's Why It's a 'Can't-Miss' Getaway

A ll ashore! Located in the Bahamas is Disney Cruise Line 's new island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a tropical paradise with, of course, a sprinkle of Disney magic.

I was among the first to experience the breathtaking retreat in June of 2024. The Caribbean haven is one port of call that cruise line guests (the Disney Dream, Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy cruise ships will all sail to Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point) will want to plan to disembark at, not just because of the island's crystal-blue waters, but also for the entertainment on shore.

Here's everything you need to know about the new island destination—including things to do, how it differs from Castaway Cay and so much more.

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point Review

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, which is steeped in Bahamian culture, is home to a colorful, can't-miss show called "RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration." Local Junkanooes parade to the Goombay Cultural Center twice a day, introducing guests to the vibrant Bahamian festival. DCL passengers can expect to see Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Daisy dancing during the celebration, dressed in looks by Bahamian fashion designer Theodore Elyett that embody the spirit of Junkanoo.

You should 100 percent make an effort to catch one of the "RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration" performances. Apart from the breathtaking beach, the vibrant show was a highlight for me!

Disney partnered with the National Junkanoo Committee to bring the celebration of Bahamian culture to Lookout Cay.  Kishlane Smith , a member of the National Junkanoo Committee, tells  Parade , "Disney should be commended for its investment, its thought process, but more importantly the fact that they listened and they wanted to work with the Bahamians that are here in the Bahamas, for our culture, to safeguard it and to allow our visiting, viewing audience to partake in what we know to be the best cultural expression in the world."

Guests with little ones will also want to swing by the Play-Play Pavilion for the "Disney Fun in the Sun Beach Bash," where they can participate in games like limbo and ring toss with Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale.

While there is plenty to do for young passengers and families, including areas like Rush Out, Gush Out Water Play and Sebastian’s Cove, guests 18 years and older can escape to an adults-only area called Serenity Bay.

Whether you're on the beach for families or adults, the island's turquoise clear waters and sandy shores provide a picturesque setting to relax and make magical vacation memories with loved ones. Less than 16 percent of the site was developed by Disney Cruise Line, leaving the majority of land in its natural state.

"We realized very early on that we did not have to do much here at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Our focus has been to preserve and to feature the stunning natural beauty of the site,"  Joey Gaskins , DCL's Regional Public Affairs Director for the Bahamas and the Caribbean, tells  Parade.

"So whether it is the myriad of blues that you see in the water, or the pink sand... the rock structures at the end of the beach, it's really about bringing Bahamian culture to our guests," Gaskins added, "But also allowing the natural environment shine."

And in the words of Mickey, "Oh boy," does it!

Where is Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point located?

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas.

How to get to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point?

The Disney Dream, Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy cruise ships will all sail to Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Does it take long to get to the beach?

The walk from the ship to the security check area on the island clocks in at under 15 minutes, so definitely apply sunscreen before leaving your stateroom. After the walk, you'll then have to board a tram that takes you to the main area. Overall, it's a little bit of a journey to the beach, but well-worth it once you see the pristine waters.

What can you do on Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point?

Apart from swimming, eating, drinking and enjoying signature Disney entertainment, there are a variety of activities, including the “Sights and Sounds of Junkanoo” family workshop, where you can learn Junkanoo traditions and crafts from local artisans.

Guests can also go snorkeling, or discover the beauty of Eleuthera with a nature trail that can be walked or cycled. A banana boat, catamaran sailings and buggy tour are among the port adventure options.

And, of course, you'll be able to do shopping while on the island. Pop into Treasures of Eleuthera for artisan crafts, or Disney T’ings for island-inspired Disney merchandise.

Can you eat on the island?

No need to worry about running back to the ship for lunch. Food is included—and don't sleep on the delicious chocolate chip cookies! You can grab a bite to eat at True-True, True-True Too BBQ, or at the adult dining area, Serenity Bay BBQ. Disney also has self-serve ice cream machines on the island.

As far as drinks go, there are self-serve soda and water stations. Meanwhile, beer, cocktails, seltzers and alcoholic drinks can be purchased on the island. Beverages are served at Bow & Ribbon Bar, Watering Hole Bar and Reef & Wreck Bar, the Blue Hole Bar for adults, while you'll find specialty frozen drinks at Sandsational Smoothies, and specialty iced coffees at Mangroves and Go.

Does Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point have a signature drink?

Yes! While on the island, if you're 21 or older, be sure to order the Eleuthera Euphoria, Disney Lookout Cay's signature cocktail.

Are towels, umbrellas and chairs free at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point?

Towels, lounge chairs and umbrellas are all included.

How is Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point different from Disney's Castaway Cay?

If you've sailed onboard a Disney Cruise Line ship before, you might be familiar with Disney's private island in the Bahamas: Castaway Cay.

"We've been really thoughtful at Disney Cruise Line about creating Disney Lookout Cay as an opportunity to complement what our guests have experienced at Castaway Key," Gaskins tells  Parade . "So, the story of Castaway Key is that it is a place that our guests wash up on... [It] doesn't really exist in the Bahamas. It's kind of an imaginary place that has a lot of Disney influence... It's special. It's the perfect beach day. Our guests have come to love that experience."

"Disney Lookout Cay is, again, inspired by the culture and heritage of the Bahamas," Gaskins continues. "We acknowledge that this is a real place, that we are on an island in the Bahamas, and that we are engaging with Bahamians."

Next, everything to know about Disney Cruise Line's sixth ship, the Disney Treasure !

Ukraine navy chief says Russia is losing Crimean hub in Black Sea

By Tom Balmforth

ODESA, Ukraine (Reuters) - The Russian navy's Black Sea Fleet has been forced to rebase nearly all its combat-ready warships from occupied Crimea to other locations, and its main naval hub is becoming ineffectual because of attacks by Kyiv, Ukraine's navy chief said.

Vice-Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa said Ukrainian missile and naval drone strikes had caused heavy damage to the Sevastopol base, a logistics hub for repairs, maintenance, training and ammunition storage among other important functions for Russia.

"They were established over many decades, possibly centuries. And clearly they are now losing this hub," Neizhpapa told Reuters in a rare interview in the port city of Odesa ahead of Ukraine Navy Day on Sunday.

More than 28 months since Russia's full-scale invasion, Kyiv has dealt a series of stinging blows to Moscow in the Black Sea although Ukrainian ground troops are on the back foot across a sprawling front.

Ukraine, which has no major warships at its disposal, has used uncrewed naval boats packed with explosives to target Russian vessels, and pounded the fleet's facilities and other military targets on Crimea with Storm Shadow and ATACM missiles.

"Almost all the main combat-ready ships have been moved by the enemy from the main base of the Black Sea Fleet, and the ships are kept in Novorossiisk, and some of them are kept in the Sea of Azov," he said.

Russia's Novorossiisk naval base on its eastern Black Sea coast lacks the extensive facilities of Crimea's Sevastopol, which served as the storage and loading site for cruise missiles used by its warships to launch air strikes on Ukraine, he said.

"I understand that they are now trying to solve this problem in Novorossiisk," he said, describing this as a "main issue" for the fleet.

Russia's defence ministry did not respond to a Reuters request for comment on Neizhpapa's remarks.

President Vladimir Putin told navy chiefs last month that Russia's fleet had been replenished over recent years and that a major modernisation was under way, including steps to "increase the combat stability of the fleet" and strengthen it.

Alongside strategic bombers and ground-based launchers, missile-carrying warships and submarines play an important role in Russia's regular long-range missile attacks.

Neizhpapa said Ukraine had destroyed or damaged 27 naval vessels, including five that he said were destroyed by sea mines laid by Ukrainian naval drones near the Bay of Sevastopol.

Moscow seized and annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. Before February 2022, Russia used its Black Sea Fleet, which consists of dozens of warships, to project power into the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Throughout the Ukraine war, Turkey, which controls the straits in and out of the Black Sea, has not allowed warships to enter or exit.

DEFENSIVE POSTURE

In a sign of their more defensive posture, some Russian warships that seldom entered the Sea of Azov to the east of Crimea are now stationed there regularly, Neizhpapa said.

Monitoring data compiled by the Ukrainian Navy and provided to Reuters showed that as of June 27, 10 Russian warships were stationed in the Sea of Azov compared with none in 2023.

The Black Sea Fleet is primarily used now for logistics, a small amount of coastal territorial control and for firing Kalibr cruise missiles at Ukraine, he said.

He declined to say what Ukraine's future plans in the Black Sea would involve.

Ukraine's operations in the Black Sea have allowed it to establish and secure its own shipping corridor without Russia's blessing after Moscow pulled out of the wartime food export deal brokered by the United Nations last year.

The pushback began with Ukrainian coastal defences that allowed it to force naval vessels away. In April 2022, Ukrainian anti-ship missiles sank the Moskva, the flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, in a humiliating blow for the Kremlin.

With the addition of naval drone attacks and strikes, Russian warships do not enter the northwestern part of the Black Sea over an area of almost 25,000 square km (9,650 square miles), Neizhpapa said.

He said the delivery of U.S.-made F-16 fighter aircraft, expected to happen soon, would be a boost allowing it to challenge what he called Russia's "full dominance" of the skies over the Black Sea.

"F-16s with the right armaments will be able to push away Russian warplanes. The northwestern part of the Black Sea, particularly the corridor for civilian ships, will be almost 100% secure," he said.

He added that Ukraine would like to expand its shipping corridor, which currently only involves maritime traffic from three of the main Odesa ports, to include the ports of Mykolaiv and Kherson, but that it was not possible.

He cited Russia's control over the Kinburn Spit, which juts out along that route.

Civilian vessels are accompanied by patrol boats in some areas to help with protection against mines, and air defences provided cover both to the ports and the corridors, he said.

The volume of cargo through the corridor has stabilised over the last six months, with Ukraine operating two daily convoys of vessels in comparison with one in 2023.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
