Things to do | cbi scientist’s flawed dna work was flagged years ago, internal investigation finds, things to do, things to do | denver 2022 comedy guide: from amy schumer to john mulaney and chris rock, the best stand-up at red rocks, clubs and more, colorado comedy festivals such as high plains and the chief fest in trinidad are also coming back.

Chris Rock accepts the Hollywood comedy film award on stage at the Hollywood Film Awards at the Palladium in Los Angeles in November 2014. The stand-up returns to Colorado this year. (Photo by Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP)

Most shows are 21-and-up; check individual websites for details. You also can view a running list of local shows at 5280comedy.com , and visit denverpost.com/calendar for more.

RELATED: Denver’s desperately needed 2022 comedy revival is here, and not a moment too soon

Denver comic Janae Burris does well in pretty much any venue, from hosting Film on the Rocks at Red Rocks Amphitheatre to slinging jokes at a biker bar, which makes her April 16 taping at the Aurora Fox Arts Center such a treat. She’ll record her first-ever special, “Long Overdue,” before the comic, actor and TV host takes a break after having a baby (due later this month). Shows at 7 and 9 p.m. April 16. $30-$50 (the $50 ticket includes two drinks). aurorafoxartscenter.org

Tig Notaro lived in Denver for a time, but didn’t begin performing stand-up until she decamped to L.A. — where she quickly met Kristen Schaal (“Bob’s Burgers”), who happens to be from Longmont. Ah, the synergy. Now a force on streaming TV (Amazon’s “One Mississippi” and Paramount’s “Star Trek: Discovery”) and also a voice actor, Notaro remains a stellar stand-up who can flatten audiences with the most subtle of intonations and expressions. Her sets are a master class in deadpan humor. Notaro’s “Hello Again” show comes to the Paramount Theatre April 14. $39-$49 (with limited tickets as of press time). ticketmaster.com

Patton Oswalt , one of the funniest, most beloved and most influential comics of the last two decades, returns to the Paramount Theatre May 14 to catch us up on his life, which has been topsy-turvy in recent years while he’s dealt with the death of his wife, solo parenting, remarriage and a busy acting and writing schedule. He has, in my experience, never performed anything less than an excellent set. $45-$75. ticketmaster.com

If you haven’t heard of Chelcie Lynn , who gained online fame a few years back as Trailer Trash Tammy, get ready, because she’s coming for you. Lynn, who will perform at Comedy Works South at the Landmark April 13-16, is shooting a prank show, lining up more film cameos (see “Tangerine”), and consolidating her hundreds of millions of streaming views with merchandise and branding. $35-$85. comedyworks.com

comedy tours colorado

Also worthy at Comedy Works : “The Office” co-star Craig Robinson (at Comedy Works South, April 7-9); Comedy Central roastmaster general Jeff Ross (April 8-10); Nick Swardson (April 14-16); John Novosad , a.k.a. Hippieman, who has a great new album (April 27); Henry Cho (south club, May 6-8); Doug Benson (May 8); Michelle Wolf (May 12-14); Adam Carolla (south club, June 24-25); Tammy Pescatelli (south club, Aug. 18-20); and stand-up queen Maria Bamford (south club, Nov. 20-22), among many others. Various times and prices. Visit comedyworks.com for the evolving calendar.

Comedy Works Presents , the club’s booking arm, has several big shows from touring comics that you can find on their websites — they’re just not at the Comedy Works clubs. That includes Chris Distefano (Paramount, April 9); Mark Normand (Paramount, May 7); trailblazing veteran  Rita Rudner (PACE Center, April 10); Anjelah Johnson (Paramount, April 15-16); Paula Poundstone (Paramount, April 29; see below for more on her); and Kathleen Madigan (Paramount, June 4). Time and ticketing details for all shows are also available at comedyworks.com .

The Denver Improv — which has been more of a complement to Comedy Works than competition since the national chain opened in Northfield in 2007 — has upcoming shows from Lynne Koplitz (April 8-9); Stone Cold & The Jackal (April 14); Eddie Ifft (April 15-16) Nick Shelton (April 21); Cowboy Bill Martin (April 22-23); Antoine Scott (April 29-30); and King Bach (June 17-18), among others. Various times and prices. Visit denver.improv.com for details.

John Mulaney returns to Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the first time since the Oddball Comedy Tour played there in 2014 — and for his first headlining gig in the intimidating venue. As he proved in 2014, the Emmy-winning, deadpan (and lately very-in-the-news) comic and former “Saturday Night Live” writer has a knack for commanding his audiences, and these “From Scratch” tour shows should be no different. Shows at 3 and 8 p.m. on April 17, $79-$350. axs.com

comedy tours colorado

Stand-up, improv and public-radio veteran Paula Poundstone performs a different show every time she steps on stage, leaning heavily on the mood and ideas of the audience to craft her sets. It makes sense that they’re such a consistent pleasure when you consider her spot on NPR’s “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!,” her books, and her podcast “Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone” (haw!). April 29 at the Paramount Theatre , $37.50-$75. ticketmaster.com

Trinidad boosters have lately been hard-pushing the New Mexico border town as Colorado’s next arts enclave, with millions in investments from Denverites moving there to escape what they complain are high rents, traffic and pollution in the Mile High City. That’s potentially creating the biggest audience yet for the Chief Bicycle & Comedy Festival , which references both Trinidad’s historic rail line (the Southwest Chief) and its biking culture (also burgeoning). Creator Wally Wallace and his backers have booked dozens of comics to take over the town’s smaller venues — and expand to Raton, N.M., for the first time — with national and local acts Eddie Pepitone, Emma Arnold, the Grawlix (Denver’s Adam Cayton-Holland, Andrew Orvedahl and Ben Roy, of truTV’s “Those Who Can’t), Babs Gray, David Gborie, Gabby Gutierrez-Reed and more. May 5-6. $20-$160 for passes; $30 for individual shows.. thechieffestival.com

On the internationally known side: Hannah Gadsby , who cleaved the stand-up world in two with her invigorating one-woman-show/”stand-up” set “Nanette,” will bring her new “Body of Work” to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House on June 2. Influential comic Chris Rock , who absorbed Will Smith’s Oscars slap like a champ, returns to Bellco Theatre June 21 to dissect relationships, race, politics and himself. And Tom Segura can lay claim to Colorado’s biggest stand-up show of the year (so far) with his appearance at Ball Arena on July 23. Various times and prices. Visit ticketmaster.com or axs.com  for more.

Amy Schumer , a lightning rod long before her Oscars co-hosting gig last week, returns to Denver for the first time in four years as part of her “Whore Tour.” Having recorded her 2017 Netflix debut “The Leather Special” at Denver’s Bellco Theatre , the Emmy-winning writer, author and actor should be right at home for her quartet of sets at the smaller but no-less-prestigious Paramount Theatre . Limited tickets available, Aug. 27-28. $99.50. ticktemaster.com

Denver’s High Plains Comedy Festival has over its eight years evolved into one of the country’s most notable stand-up and podcast events, with live tapings, showcases, reunions and headlining shows at the stately Paramount Theatre . Even while hosting heavies such as David Cross, Karen Kilgariff, Maria Bamford, Marc Maron, Kumail Nanjiani and Anthony Jeselnik, the event still feels indie, given its main perch along Denver’s hip South Broadway corridor, but also because of its affordable tickets, smart booking and curated local lineups. Performers TBD. Sept. 8-10. See more soon at highplainscomedyfestival.com .

“Weird Al” Yankovic’s storied career may seem improbable at times, but the master musical parodist has stuck to his guns through all manner of pop-culture battles and come out looking smart (also: silly, and intentionally so). He’ll stop in Colorado with stand-up opener Emo Philips for shows at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House (June 3-4) and later, at Colorado Springs’ Pikes Peak Center (Sept. 6), Grand Junction’s Avalon Theatre (Sept. 7) and Greeley’s Union Colony Civic Center (Sept. 9). Various prices. Visit weirdal.com/tour for details.

About Nate Bargatze

Hailed as “The Nicest Man in Stand-Up,” by  The Atlantic Magazine  and a “Rising Star,” by  CBS Morning , 2021 Grammy nominated comedian, podcaster, director and producer Nate Bargatze is selling out shows around the world. Bargatze will make his debut appearance hosting Saturday Night Live on October 28 th  on NBC/Peacock.

An Old Hickory, Tennessee native, Bargatze followed in the showbiz footsteps of his father, a former clown turned world class magician, who’s influence is seen on his’s 2015 debut Comedy Central special,  Full Time Magic  and his debut album,  Yelled at By a Clown , which reached #1 on the iTunes Comedy Charts and remained on Billboard’s Top Ten Comedy Charts for weeks.

Bargatze’s half-hour Netflix Special  The Standups,  premiered in 2017 and his first solo one-hour Netflix special,  The Tennessee Kid,  premiered globally with rave reviews in 2019. In 2021, he released his critically acclaimed second Netflix special,  The Greatest Average American , which received a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. On January 31 st , Nate released his latest and third one-hour special,  Nate Bargatze: Hello World , on Amazon Prime which now holds the record as Amazon’s most-streamed original comedy special in its first 28 days of viewership.

On April 15 th  2023, Bargatze broke the attendance record at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville with 19,365 tickets sold. This month, he also broke the record for tickets sold at The Delta Center in Salt Lake City with 32,638 fans attending – the highest amount ever sold by a comedian at the venue.

He was also recently signed to Universal Music Group Nashville as their flagship comedian under their new Capitol Comedy label.

Bargatze’s comedy is both clean and relatable, evident in his 13 appearances on  The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon . He also appeared on  Conan  four times and has appeared on Seth Meyers and James Corden respective late night shows.

He was a recurring guest on  @midnight  and had his own Comedy Central Presents in 2011. Off-screen, Bargatze was part of  Jimmy Fallon's Clean-Cut Comedy Tour , and has performed live shows for the troops in Iraq and Kuwait five times.  In addition to touring the country as a headliner, Nate toured arenas with Chris Rock on his 2017  Total Blackout Tour . He has performed at SXSW, Oddball Comedy Festival, Sasquatch, Clusterfest, and the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival, where he’s received critical acclaim multiple years in a row.

Bargatze was featured as one of Esquire's “Best New Comedians” by Jim Gaffigan, one of Marc Maron's “Comedians to Watch” in Rolling Stone, one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” for 2015, and as #1 on Vulture's ‘50 Comedians You Should Know’ in 2015. He also appeared on the cover of Variety’s annual comedy issue in 2022.

3E's Comedy Club

After years of delighting downtown audiences, 3 E's Comedy Club is bidding farewell to its downtown location and heading north with a new, refreshing experience. The decision to relocate comes with a promise of a better location, more parking, and an exciting addition – the mouthwatering Crispy Bacon breakfast and lunch restaurant and bar. But that's not all – the new location offers incredible balconies and VIP window seats with amazing views of Pikes Peak and is situated right next to the Icon Theater off Interquest in a booming area.

"We're thrilled about the move and the opportunities it brings," says Eric Phillips, owner of 3 E's Comedy Club. "The new location not only offers improved amenities but also allows us to introduce exciting new features like our Crispy Bacon breakfast and lunch restaurant. We want to elevate the entire experience for our guests." With its relocation, 3 E's Comedy Club aims to create a dynamic entertainment destination that not only delivers side-splitting national level comedic headliners but also provides a memorable dining experience. The combination of ample parking, a convenient location, stunning views of Pikes Peak, and the addition of Crispy Bacon breakfast and lunch options sets the stage for an exciting new chapter in the club's history.

As preparations for the grand opening in the new northern location are underway, anticipation is building among comedy enthusiasts and foodies alike. 3 E's Comedy Club is poised to become a must-visit destination in its vibrant new neighborhood.

Colorado State Fair lineup: Ludacris, The Commodores, Pueblo's Cody Cozz with Trace Adkins

A hometown country music rising star performing with Trace Adkins, rap icon Ludacris and the legendary funk band the Commodores are among the star-studded entertainment lineup announced Wednesday for the Colorado State Fair coming to Pueblo Aug. 23-Sept. 2.

Country performer Cody Cozz, who grew up in Pueblo West as Cody Cozzolino, graduated from Pueblo West High School in 2017. He played football for the Cyclones and later Colorado State University Pueblo before the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on his college career. The lure of the Nashville music scene drew him away in 2022, and it was there in Tennessee where he released his first national single, "On My Way."

Cozz is set to return to Pueblo for a 7 p.m. concert headlined by Trace Adkins Friday, Aug. 30. Adkins has a 25-year career in country music and the Louisiana native has sold more than 11 million albums. Adkins is known for his No. 1 country hits like "Ladies Love Country Boys," "You're Gonna Miss This," and "Every Light in the House."

Tickets for all concerts will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday on the  Colorado State Fair ticket website .

“Is there any better way to end the summer than with the State Fair and our unbelievable musical lineup? From rap and country superstars to R&B icons and a Mexican brass band, you can expect to see top musicians who are part of the fair experience this year, ”  said Scott Stoller, general manager of the Colorado State Fair.

Rodeos and country music kick off the fun

Three hit country music acts will take the stage in the Big R Arena following the Professional Cowboys Rodeo Association rodeo events Aug. 23-25.

Shane Smith & The Saints kick off the entertainment at 9:30 p.m., Aug. 23, following the 7 p.m. rodeo. Smith grew up in Texas, and his band recently released a fourth album, “Norther.”

"American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery takes the arena stage at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, following the 7 p.m. rodeo. A native of North Carolina, McCreery won the 2011 "American Idol” competition and is best known for country music singles, “You Time,” and “Damn Strait.”

McCreery is the youngest male artist of any genre to debut his first album at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 artist chart. Lonestar performs at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25, after the 5 p.m. rodeo.

Lonestar has scored 10 number-one singles in its 30-year history, and its crossover hit “Amazed” earned both single and song of the year awards from the Academy of Country Music in 2011.

An Evening of Icons

"An Evening of Icons," featuring The Commodores and The Spinners, is set for 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 29, at the Southwest Motors Events Center. The Commodores have sold 75 million albums worldwide and have amassed seven No. 1 singles plus five No. 1 albums. The Spinners, an R&B band with a six-decade history, will join them on stage.

Ludacris performs at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 31. As a recording artist, he has sold more than 24 million albums worldwide, thanks to the success of hit singles such as “Stand Up,” “Get Back,” “Southern Hospitality,” “Number One Spot,” “Money Maker,” and “My Chick Bad.”

Fiesta Day and Celebración de los Charros

Closing out the evening performances will be the fan favorite Celebración de los Charros, an event known as “ballet on horseback” which highlights Fiesta Day on Sept. 1. Banda el Recodo will perform after the 7 p.m. rodeo.

Banda el Recodo has performed banda and grupera music for more than seven decades. Started in 1937 by Don Cruz, the band continues its legacy with his sons, Alfonso and Joel Lizárraga, after their father died in 1995.

Monster Trucks and more

The Toughest Monster Truck Tour is set for 8 p.m., Aug. 30, and 1 p.m., Aug. 31. The Demolition Derby is slated for 7 p.m. on Aug. 31.

An additional night of PRCA Rodeo is scheduled for 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 26, during the St. Mary Corwin Cowboys Kickin’ Cancer event. Tickets are $5 for the Aug. 26 rodeo plus it's Kids’ Day, so anyone 12 and younger will be admitted free with an adult admission.

All fair tickets, including general admission, concert, and rodeo tickets, can be purchased online at  ColoradoStateFair.com , by phone at 1-800-514-3849, or in person at the Colorado State Fair box office, at the Southwest Motors Events Center, 950 S. Prairie Ave. Concert tickets purchased before Aug. 23 include gate admission to the fair, which can amount to up to $15 in savings per person.

Matt Rife takes a two-week break from comedy tour, citing ‘extreme exhaustion’

Stand-up comedian Matt Rife is taking two weeks off during his world tour after “extreme exhaustion” led him to cancel a pair of Indiana performances just hours before showtime.

The 28-year-old comic — who rose to fame in 2023 for his crowd-work bits posted to TikTok and recently became the youngest comedian to headline (and sell out) the Hollywood Bowl — is midway through his sold-out ProbleMATTic World Tour — a 115-date run encompassing two years and three continents. When ticket sales went live last June, Ticketmaster crashed.

Stand-ups explain why it pays to sharpen crowd-work skills. ‘It keeps me on my toes’

Comedians Matt Rife, Trevor Wallace and Hannah Berner weigh in about the skill of interacting with fans in a live setting is more than just a magic skill, it’s a comedy muscle that sells tickets.

Feb. 27, 2024

Rife was slated to perform back-to-back shows Wednesday night at the Indiana University Auditorium in Bloomington, Ind. The venue that evening announced the cancellation of both shows on Instagram , citing an “unexpected medical emergency” and promising refunds within 30 days.

Rife also apologized for backing out last-minute via his Instagram story.

“I’m so ... sorry, but due to a last minute medical emergency i have to reschedule our shows tonight (again),” Rife wrote. “I’ve been doing 40+ shows a month for a year and half and never had to do something like this, I’m so so sorry, i hope you understand and i love you so much.”

After Wednesday’s cancellations, ticket holders for Rife’s scheduled performances at Chicago Theater and the Ryman Auditorium received an email from the venues announcing their shows would also be postponed.

“On the way to a recent show in Indiana, Matt experienced extreme exhaustion symptoms and nearly fainted heading to the venue,” the email said. “Matt is currently under advisement from his medical team to take immediate time off from touring for two weeks.”

The message assured showgoers that “future dates will not be affected” and said the comedian will resume his tour June 12 in Memphis. The Chicago Theater shows were moved to Dec. 26-30, with refunds available for those unable to attend. New dates for the Ryman Auditorium performances are pending.

Representatives for Rife did not reply immediately Friday to The Times’ request for comment.

L.A. stand-up specials stand out in a year of DIY comedy

2023 proved a banner year for stand-up fans, with the number of hourlong specials released clearing 200-plus. Why such record-breaking output?

Dec. 27, 2023

In April, Deadline reported that Rife had signed a two-special deal with Netflix after “Natural Selection,” his first special on the platform, became its most-viewed special in the second half of last year. Rife also received a development deal for a workplace comedy series he will write and star in.

Rife previously released three self-produced comedy specials, “Only Fans” in 2021 and “Matthew Steven Rife” and “Red Flag” in 2023.

Take a Tour of a 'Greener' Colorado State Capitol Building

It’s hard to miss the gold-plated dome atop the Colorado State Capitol , but the nearly invisible geothermal system that heats and cools the building is every bit as compelling.

Operational since 2013, the system was a first for a state capitol building.

“The building is uniquely situated over the aquifer in downtown Denver,” says Doug Platt, the capitol’s spokesperson. “The way our geothermal system works is it pulls the water out from underground, circulates it through a variety of heat exchangers throughout the building, and then we put the water back into the ground so that there’s no net gain or loss of the water from the water table. We just borrow its temperature: a constant 64 degrees underground.”

Notes Platt: “It’s a more moderate baseline to both heat and cool the building.”

Designed with a target reduction in energy costs of $29 million, the geothermal system “pays for itself with energy savings,” he adds. “Should there not be energy savings demonstrated, the builder of the system has performance contracts where they would offset if there was any increase in cost. At the end of the day, the system was built with no state tax dollars.”

Geothermal heating and cooling is not the capitol building’s only superlative when it comes to sustainability.

“The Colorado State Capitol was the first one ever to get LEED-certified,” says Platt.

The implementation of recycling and water conservation programs and a move to energy-efficient LED lighting helped garner the certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, he adds, noting, “We have converted over 22,000 lights not only in the capitol, but in the entire Capitol Complex.”

Colorado State Capitol Building interior

The biggest sustainability challenge at the capitol involves bringing a building built in the 1890s into the 21st century.

“With the technology that’s hardwired into the building, sometimes it makes it a challenge to do that, but that doesn’t deter us from doing a lot of common-sense things as well as technologically advanced things,” says Platt.

“Despite the fact that you don’t see this stuff as a tourist, a lot of its going on in inconspicuous areas,” he continues. “We need to always consider the architect’s vision of the building and the historical significance of the building so that when we do these things, we don't disrupt that historic character. Putting in a geothermal system, for example, we didn’t run new ductwork where people can see anything. It all has to be done without disrupting the historical vision of the building.”

Gov. Jared Polis has also promoted sustainable practices via executive orders, including one in 2023 that established a sustainability office to promote government efforts and reduce energy and water consumption in state buildings.

It also pushes the greening of the grounds at the capitol and other government properties.

“This executive order talks about xeriscaping, it talks about converting all of the equipment that we use to landscape from gas power to electric power,” explains Platt.

All of these initiatives add up to a significant whole. “When we talk about sustainability, it’s sort of a journey rather than a destination,” says Platt. “We’re walking the walk.”

Take a free tour of the capitol building, Monday through Friday, where you can admire the intricate stained glass, towering columns, gilded crown molding, gleaming brass chandeliers and, of course, the gold dome atop it all.

Colorado GOP calls LGBTQ+ people 'godless groomers' in Pride month email: 'God hates flags'

Colorado GOP sends email suggesting burn all pride flags

The state's GOP party recently sent out a campaign email that called LGBTQ+ people "barbaric," "creeps," “degenerates,” "groomers," "predators," “radicals,” and “reprobates."

The Republican Party of Colorado has called to "burn all Pride flags" in a shocking Pride Month message to its followers.

The state's GOP recently sent out a campaign email that referred to LGBTQ + people as "barbaric," "creeps," “degenerates,” "godless," "groomers," "predators," “radicals,” and “reprobates." The message also linked to a sermon from Pastor Mark Driscoll, which proclaimed in the video thumbnail "God hates flags," wordplay on a popular conservative slogan that uses a derogatory slur .

"The month of June has arrived and, once again, the godless groomers in our society want to attack what is decent, holy, and righteous so they can ultimately harm our children," the email stated, via Denver journalist Kyle Clark .

Post by @kyleclark9news View on Threads

The email then referred to gender-affirming care as "barbaric medical procedures" and falsely claimed the treatment is "irreversible." While surgical procedures — which are rarely, if ever, performed on minors — are permanent, puberty blockers and many side effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are reversible.

"These degenerates want to violate our children and their innocence," the message continued.

After Clark posted the emails to social media, the official account for the Colorado GOP responded with a gif of pixelated fire and the message: "Burn all #pride flags this June."

The email is not the first viciously anti-LGBTQ+ message to appear in Colorado Republicans' inboxes — the party sent out another email just two weeks ago that called for parents in the state to take their kids out of public schools because Democrats are trying “to turn more kids trans.”

The May message referred to transgender identity as a "fetish" and "disturbing behavior which should be treated rather then [sic] encouraged." It also claimed that using a person’s pronouns does “not make any sense and causes gender confusion.”
