Brilliant baboon bus

We have visited here many times especially during the recent pandemic. We have always felt extremely safe with all of the extra safety measures that have been put in place. This was our first experience on the baboon bus which we thought was really good. The driver did an excellent commentary all round but the other passengers were extremely noisy and it was often difficult to hear him. Unfortunately due to the heat we did not get to experience many baboons climbing on the ropes along the bus. The staff were excellent during the sea lion show by ensuring that everybody was kept safe.

From visiting the self drive safari and the foot safari, was better than any awesome review that I could write, just totally out of this world and definitely will be back. Staff were very friendly and everything was extremely clean. Our first visit and definitely won’t be the last

Just left here after not being able to get tickets to Blackpool or Chester zoo, & we needed somewhere to break up a long journey from Blackpool to Kent. This was the perfect place. Enjoyed the safari, we avoided the monkeys, but could still drive alongside the enclosure & see them climbing on everyones cars! The lions were all lying right by the side of the road which was great to see them so close. Rest of the animals had good enclosures & everywhere was well looked after. We payed £10 for the wristband so my son could go on all the rides & thought it was so good that they let an adult ride with them for free. All in all a good day out for all the family 😁

I enjoyed watching the monkeys sitting on people’s cars. I personally opted out of this. Not a great deal of animals to see.

I'm here now and they've sold most of their animals due to the loss of money from the pandemic. There is no mention of this on their website or any warning of some animals not being there. You can't feed the giraffes due to social distancing but everywhere else in the park people are not social distancing... Took us 10 minutes to drive through the park and we seen 3 different animals. Don't bother walking through the tiger psrt as there isn't one.

It’s a shame because the park itself is really good, lots to do. However, the staff and some others higher up are taking Covid restrictions into their own hands and creating their own rules. If you watch the sea lion show and you’re exempt from masks you get segregated from other visitors and made to sit in the right section. The staff then make threats to grown adults that if they’re caught pulling masks down during the show then they will terminate the show and everyone will have to leave. We also was wanting to sit in the cafe to have lunch and then when I said I was exempt they advised us to sit in the marquee instead. The discrimination is as clear as day and it’s disgusting. But yet, the park itself is absolutely packed with visitors and it’s actually impossible to socially distance during any other activity.

Knowsley Safari Park Review (Beware The Baboons!)

knowsley safari bus

We were very lucky on our recent family weekend break  to Liverpool to be invited to Knowsley Safari for a day out. None of us had been to Knowsley Safari Park before, so this was an amazing new experience for us to share together.  Daddy didn’t even realise that safari parks even existed in this country so it really was an eye opener for him.

We arrived at the park when it opened and were given our arrangements for the day and the time we had to join the Knowsley Safari Baboon Bus by the meet and greet staff.  As we weren’t going to be joining the bus until 12pm, we decided we would drive around Knowsley Safari first to find out what it was like.  I’m so glad we did, as being one of the first cars around the park was a real advantage.

Meet The Lions

If you are planning a visit to Knowsley Safari Park I really would urge you to get there as soon as the gates open and head straight to the safari.  The benefit of doing this is you get to see the lions right up close and personal, so to speak.

Lions at Knowsley Safari Park

Lots To See

Around the park there are so many animals to see that to make the most of your visit we would recommend going around twice at least.  They have a vast collection of all different kinds of animals from zebras, giraffes , peacocks, elephants and rhinoceroses.  The park contains around 700 species of animal all together over 550 acres of safari park and I’m pretty sure we saw nearly all of them.

Indie seemed to enjoy the sea lions the most, and the fact she could see them from under the water really added to her experience.  I lost count of the times she went up and down the steps to see them from all the different angles  she could in the pool.

Sea Lions At Knowsley Safari

Beware the Baboons

Knowsley Safari Park has a a very large collection of Baboons in residence.  When we drove round the park ourselves we decided to take the Baboon safe route.  We valued our windscreen wipers, especially as we were going to be driving 2 hours back to Nottingham after the weekend and we know baboons aren’t shy about pulling things off cars.  We knew we would get to see them when we caught the baboon bus later.

These cheeky primates have quite a reputation you see.  They are famous for stealing windscreen wipers, England flags, number plates and pretty much anything they can pull off a car.  They are also known for using the odd moving vehicle as a toilet.  We saw this in progress, so I can completely vouch for it.

They are amazing creatures, but when they see a car they think it’s playtime.  When we were about to enter their enclosure on the Baboon bus, we saw a women get out of her car, and stick her windscreen wipers down with masking tape.  Now, you remember those lions I mentioned at the beginning of the post?  Firstly, it really isn’t a good idea to get out of your car whilst at the safari, and secondly masking tape really isn’t going to make a jot of difference.

baboons at knowsley safari park

It’s definitely worth taking the Baboon bus at Knowsley Safari Park for lots of reasons.  The guide gave us lots of interesting facts about all the animals that live at Knowsley Safari, which we all really enjoyed.  You can use the guide your given on entry too, but I must say I prefer someone to point things out and talk to you, they often have stories you don’t find in the tour guide.

The main reason though is that the Baboon bus is a great way to see the Baboons and keep your car in one piece.  There are ropes hanging from the bus that the Baboons catch and climb up, but they aren’t shy about using the windscreen wipers either.

This was such a fun experience, and our 3 year old thought it was very amusing watching the baboons jump onto the bus.  She thought it was even more amusing when one wee’d down the windscreen.  These baboons know no shame.  I really can’t recommend the Baboon bus enough.

We Met Ben & Holly Too

During our visit, Ben & Holly were visiting Knowsley Safari too.  They were having meet and greets with their fans through out the day.  Now, we couldn’t miss this as Indie loves the show.  She kept reminding us that she’d seen them at the theatre , and was very excited to meet the in person.  Just look at this happy little face…

Recommendation

We had an amazing visit to Knowsley Safari and would recommend a visit for anyone coming to Liverpool.  It really does have something for everyone.  The have a play park for the children to enjoy, restaurants and picnic areas too.

They have a really flexible pricing structure so that you can enjoy the park in the best way that suits you.  Entry starts at just £17.50 and under 3’s are free.  Baboon Bus tickets are £5.50 per person.  It really is great value for money.

We were provided with complimentary tickets to Knowsley Safari Park in exchange for this post, but all thoughts and opinions are our own.

We’ve been a couple of times. Last time was last Xmas. It was our 3yr old 1st time, she liked it until we went to see the lions and monkeys, we went. All she can remember is one of them jumping up at our door and opening our side door.

Oops. They really are cheeky monkey’s aren’t they. Did you have the door locked? They are pretty strong aren’t they

We will next time!! As it opened slightly.

That must have been pretty scary. I hope it doesn’t put you off going. We really had a great day. The Baboon bus is a great way to keep your car in tact 🙂

this looks so fun!! so you can drive around the park on your own? the lions don’t damage the cars?

Yep, you can drive around on your own. There are rangers around making sure people don’t do anything silly like open car windows for photo’s. It’s not the lions you have to worry about, it’s the baboons!

It looks such an amazing place to visit! It must be so great to get so close to the animals! It sounds like you had a lot of fun! Great photos x

Thanks Kim, it was amazing. We really enjoyed. It was a much better experience than going to a zoo x

I can vouch for the Baboons liking number plates, we had ours snatched off a few years ago, not that we minded as the children loved every minute of it, but if you are worried about losing something from your car the Baboon bus sounds ideal!

We went in early like you and saw the lions close up, a brilliant if slightly nerve wracking experience!

What a great price for such a good day out. It is wonderful being able to be so close to such magnificent creatures. And to meet Ben and Holly too. I’m glad you all enjoyed it.

Oh wow this place looks amazing!! I am going to have to take Boo – she loves monkeys at the minute. And I am really pleasantly surprised by the prices too!

I love Safari parks; it might be the only place I will get to see some of the wild animals.

We are to go next week, and cannot wait! It looks absolutely brilliant x

Our car is still not the same after trip to Knowsley Safari Park

When I told my four-year-old we were going back to Knowsley Safari Park he had four words for me... "but not the baboons".

Last year was our first trip to the five-mile adventure in Prescot and we ignored the warning signs before the monkey enclosure and we basically screamed in fear the whole way round. And it is not just our minds that were traumatised, our car still bears the scars of the carnage - one of our washer jets still shoots wonky.

So this time, we opted for the safe route around the outside of the baboon enclosure and watched as the babies played with each other and learnt how to destroy the passing cars from the elders - it was quite wholesome actually. And it was healing for us as we felt we could finally laugh about last year's incident as we saw one of the baboons rip a windscreen wiper from a car and run away with it, probably to do a victory lap; thank goodness it wasn't us.

READ MORE: New Liverpool to Alton Towers Resort bus service to start

But for people who haven't been before, Knowsley Safari Park isn't just about the drive, they also have a foot safari with giraffes, an amazing tiger, cute meerkats and birds of prey and this half term they have brought the carnival to town. Running until Sunday, June 2 the Seaside Carnival has live demonstrations from the wonderfully trained acrobats and free activities and workshops including aerial silks, hoola-hooping and plate-spinning, as well as pier-themed games stalls, including a coconut shy, Tin Can alley and hook-a-duck. And you can get 25% off when you book online this half term.

And of course, they still have all the existing rides. It is £12 for an unlimited rides wristband and some rides that need an adult, the adult rides free, which I thought was a great and reasonable deal and perfect for kids aged between four and nine. Height restrictions apply on the rides, but don't be fooled into thinking they are not thrilling, my husband was a bit white coming off the sky ride.

You can take a packed lunch, remembering not to feed the animals of course, but there is food on offer and we had fries from the food court, and it was great value for a captive market. We paid £2.85 for fries with unlimited sauces and it was £1.50 for a can of Coke, considering we paid £2.80 for a can of Fanta in Alton Towers the day before, I commend Knowsley Safari for keeping the prices low.

As well as learning our lesson from our last visit and not going into the baboon enclosure, we also took our own advice and arrived early went around the safari, enjoyed the rides, carnival and snacks, then went around the drive safari again. Knowsley is a great day out for the family and I am so glad it is on our doorstep.

Here is my checklist from last time that really helped me this year too.

Go to the loo first before you go on safari

There is a toilet stop just before the drive safari gates, so take advantage.

Enter the baboons at your own risk

Last year we found it so intense that this time around we were more than happy to just drive around. We watched the cheeky baboons take over a number of cars inside the enclosure, some coming away unscathed, others were not so lucky but it is all part of the experience. Read our intense experience last year here.

Get there early

Arrive early and make a whole day of it, finishing off with another drive around to see the incredible animals.

You need tokens for the rides

There is a playground too that is free if you want to keep costs to minimum, but I know it can be difficult to say no to your kids, so an unlimited rides wristband is £12 and other rides are priced at £1-3 each ride.

Take snacks

It can keep the cost down if you don't want to buy food there and you should always take snacks, that is just good safari practice.

Tickets are priced at £22.50 per adult when you book online, £19.50 for children aged three to 15 and under threes are free. Find out more here .
