Neyzen Travel and Yachting

While in Turkey we did two Gulet cruises and they were both amazing! The first went north from Bodrum into small Greek islands and the second went south along the Turkish coast. The boats are beautiful, it was fun to meet new people, the places we saw were spectacular and the food was delicious! The water was stunning in colour and lovely to swim in everyday. I would highly recommend booking through Neyzen! We are already talking about going back and doing another cruise!

neyzen tours bodrum turkey

Recently had an incredible week’s charter on ‘Let’s Dance’ on the Bodrum peninsula with a group of 6 of my close friends. We have never had a holiday like this and none of us had ever stayed on a boat before, it was a trip of a lifetime! From the moment we arrived at the airport we were taken care of by the wonderful staff. We were picked up from Bodrum airport and the service was outstanding as soon as we stepped foot onboard (especially from Emre who was very sweet and attentive). We were served 3 freshly cooked meals every day from the excellent chef - all gourmet traditional dishes. We especially loved our big Turkish breakfast every morning! The boat was so stylish and comfortable, our cabins were perfect and were made up for us every morning. We swam in turquoise waters every day, tried out water sports (which we loved) relaxed and sunbathed on the deck and over indulged in drinks and snacks. The sunsets and sunrises we saw were incredible! We took under-water phone cases with us and captured some amazing images and videos - would definitely recommend taking one with you! The staff also took some great pictures and sent these over to us once we were back home. Made the most amazing memories on this holiday. It was special spending such quality time with my friends being looked after and having so much fun - we will never forget it! And we will definitely be back! 100% recommend this incredible trip to anyone thinking of this kind of trip.

Luxury Sailing in Turkey with Neyzen Yachting

After an unforgettable few weeks exploring Turkey’s mainland with Neyzen we arrived in Bodrum ready to board our luxury yacht for a week sailing along the Turquoise Coasts of Turkey and Greece! Neyzen Yachting were established in 1987 and are the leading provider of luxury vacations and yacht charters in Turkey. Neyzen specialise in tours with a cultural emphasis that are designed for the discerning traveller and operate an exclusive fleet of four luxury yachts that offer luxury private and cabin charter cruises of the Aegean coastline and Greek Dodecanese Islands. They were the first company in the region to offer high-end cabin charters with all the 5-star comfort and luxury amenities of private charters and we loved every aspect of our cabin charter holiday!

Luxury Gulet Neyzen Travel Turkey

The interior of the yacht is spacious and elegant with air conditioned quarters with high ceilings and wide corridors. The salon had a well stocked bar with cushioned seating and a table for indoor dining if the weather isn’t great (which we didn’t have to worry about as the weather was perfect)! There is also a library of magazines and books in addition to a DVD player with a wide selection of DVD’s and both indoor and outdoor speakers with iPod connections.

Inside of Luxury Gulet

Nikola had three cabins with queen sized beds and one master cabin which had a king-sized and single bed. The cabins were all very airy and roomy for yacht cabins with plenty of storage space meaning we could completely unpack for the week. Each room also had a spacious en-suite bathroom with a toilet, shower, marble sink and vanity again with plenty of storage space. Towels, toiletries, hand soap and toilet paper were all provided as well.

Master Bedroom Luxury Gulet Neyzen Travel Turkey

Our gulet had three crew which consisted of Ramazan our trusty captain who was amazing, Gültekin our fantastic chef and Aras the very capable and friendly sailor/deckhand. The crew were fantastic and truly went above and beyond at all times to ensure every single person on the boat had an unforgettable week. The service and food were spectacular and there was always someone on hand to ensure all our needs were met. The food on the boat was top notch and Gültekin was an incredibly skilled chef who whipped us up a wide range of meals ranging from haute cuisine to regional specialities all using the highest quality produce and ingredients. Everyone on the boat raved about every single meal and we were blown away by just how amazing, tasty and imaginative each meal was! Water, soft drink, local beer and wines were included in our tour price and Aras was always on hand to serve drinks whenever we wanted one as well as serving each meal.

Whilst relaxation was the number one choice of most of our fellow travellers, there was also plenty of extra activities available on our yacht. Sailing, snorkelling, canoeing, paddleboarding, fishing and wakeboarding are just a few of the additional activities available and we made sure to try them all out during our time onboard.

Luxury Gulet Neyzen Travel Turkey

CABIN CHARTER ROUTE Our fantastic route along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts gave us an amazing combination of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast and the nearby Greek Dodecanese Islands. The cruise started and ended in Bodrum and saw us set sail across the blue expanse of the Gulf of Gokova for the ancient site of Knidos where the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas meet. Our next port of call was Eski Datca, a quaint town of traditional stone architecture and atmospheric side streets. From there we crossed over to the Greek island of Simi which has a charming, picturesque Neo-classical harbourfront. From Simi we returned to Turkish waters and explored the enchanting Gulf of Hisaronu. On our way back to Bodrum we stopping at Bencik Bay and Mersincik. The itinerary was fantastic and had the perfect combination of swimming, sailing, sightseeing, shopping and exploring countless gorgeous, crystal clear bays!

A TYPICAL DAY ON M.S. NIKOLA Most days we would wake up bright and early to catch a gorgeous sunrise from the deck which was always a very calm and magical experience and the perfect way to start our day!

Sailing Sunrise in Turkey

After sunrise and plenty of freshly brewed coffee we would have plenty of time to have a swim before breakfast!

Stunning water sailing in Turkey

Breakfast was served around 8am and consisted of an incredible spread of cheeses, fruit, bread, jams, nutella, cold meats, eggs, fresh juice and tea and coffee.

Dining in Sailing Boat Turkey

After breakfast we’d set sail to our first town, island or bay for the day! Whilst Ramazan was sailing we’d spend our morning relaxing and soaking up the sunshine on deck, reading on the lounges or simply enjoying the sunshine!

Relaxing on Turkey Sailing Boat

As soon as we’d anchor up and the engine turned off we would all jump in for a swim in the beautiful water! The beautiful crystal clear, blue water in Turkey was unlike any water we’ve seen during our travels – it was truly majestic and you couldn’t help but want to spend all day long floating, swimming and snorkelling!

Beautiful Turkish Cove

After we’d worked up a big appetite from swimming the lunch bell would ring and we’d tuck into an incredible feast! Lunch was different each day and comprised delicious mezzes, salads, pasta or rice, fresh fish or meat and fresh bread, accompanied by wine of course! Mid afternoon we’d also be served up a delicious fruit platter which would keep us going until dinner.

Dining Table Turkey Luxury Gulet

Once lunch was finished we had free time to swim, sunbake, snorkel and try our hand at canoeing or wakeboarding if we wanted to!

Kneeboarding in Turkey

Our afternoon sail would normally take a few hours and was the perfect opportunity to relax, read and simply watch the beautiful scenery around us.

Girl sailing in Turkey

Once the anchor was down in our bay for the evening we’d have our final swim and paddle board for the day before getting the plan for the next day from Ramazan. We’d then relax and enjoy a few glasses of wine and beer in the afternoon sunshine before getting ready for dinner.

Diving off Turkey sailboat

We’d enjoy a beautiful sunset on deck and then a fantastic dinner cooked by our incredible chef and served by Aras. Every meal on the yacht was amazing and dinner’s were certainly our favourite meal of the day. Every meal was different and included vegetables, salads, rice, pasta and meat which ranged from pork, chicken, fresh seafood, lamb and delicious BBQ’d meat which would be accompanied by wine and finished with dessert. Every dish was cooked to perfection and everyone would be left absolutely stuffed and very happy! The food was without a doubt a highlight of the trip. We’d have a few after dinner drinks, take in the night skies and countless stars for a little while and then everyone would retire to their air-conditioned cabins to sleep before another relaxing day sailing around beautiful Turkey.

HIGHLIGHTS AND OUR FAVOURITE MOMENTS OF THE WEEK In addition to relaxing on our gorgeous yacht our highlights from the week included swimming, sailing, snorkelling, explore villages and of course incredible ancient sites as well as the incredible food and service we received from our fantastic crew throughout the week. Whilst we loved every moment of our week we wanted to share a few of the highlights and our favourite moments from the week.

KNIDOS On our second day we visited the ancient site of Knidos which is famous in antiquity for the cult of Aphrodite which started there. Situated at the end of the Datca peninsula, this Dorian city was built on terraces rising to the acropolis. Knidos straddled the peninsula with a harbour on either side and flourished during the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. The city was renowned as one of the most beautiful in ancient Greece and was a fantastic ancient site to explore and only cost 10TL entrance fee.

Ancient Knidos Turkey

SIMI The beautiful, tiny Greek Island of Simi was one of our favourite places that we visited during the week. Simi is located in the Straight of Marmaris and it directly hugs the Turkish Coast. Simi is gorgeous with a scenic natural landscape that consists of jagged coastline with sheer cliffs, narrow fjords, private coves and high mountains. Simi has elaborate churches, neo-classical homes, elegant boutiques, seafood restaurants and a charming, pastel coloured harbour. Whilst in Simi we also visited the Panormitis Monastery of the Archangel Michael with its incredible Byzantine frescos and the gorgeous Bay of St. George which was one of our favourite swim stops of the week!

Sailing into Simi Island Greece

SUNSETS & SUNRISES We love catching both sunsets and sunrises when we travel and there is something magical about watching the sun rise and set from the sea, with nothing but water between you and the sun. We were lucky to witness some beautiful sunsets and sunrises whilst onboard our yacht and this was certainly a highlight of our week.

Girl watching sunset sailing in Turkey

SNORKELLING & SWIMMING IN BEAUTIFUL BAYS Turkey’s crystal clear waters are breathtaking and you won’t take any convincing to dive in! The beautiful waters of the Mediterranean are some of the most stunning we’ve seen in all our travels and to be able to swim and snorkel in a number of different bays every single day of our trip was an experience we’ll never forget.

Luxury Sailing in Turkey with Neyzen Yachting

THE FOOD As we’ve mentioned just a few times we loved the food on board our boat. Every meal was created using the freshest and highest quality ingredients and was beautifully presented. There was more than enough food ensuring no one went hungry at any time and there was a great variety of food! We loved one day when Ramazan went spear fishing and came back with a huge octopus and 8 fish for dinner that night which were cooked up on the BBQ! It truly doesn’t get fresher than that!

Fishing in Turkey

SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESSES We stopped on a number of small islands in gorgeous little towns where we could shop at local markets and pick up fantastic little locally made souvenirs. One of our favourite moments from the week was when we were all relaxing on deck and a local man came up to our yacht in his little boat that was filled with gorgeous Turkish towels and goods! Everyone loves to support local business and we were so impressed with his initiative that we all bought some of his beautiful towels which have made fantastic gifts for people at home!

Buying Towels while sailing in Turkey

THE CREW Our crew were truly fantastic and we could not be anymore grateful to them for ensuring every aspect of our week sailing around Turkey was perfect! It was a week we will never forget and if you book a Neyzen Yachting holiday and sail on Nikola then we promise you will be in great hands!

Sailing in Turkey with Neyzen Travel

FINAL THOUGHTS Our week sailing around Turkey with Neyzen Yachting was without a doubt one of the highlights of our travels to date and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them! Neyzen were one of the most professional, thorough and highest quality companies we’ve ever travelled. They’ve just started a Greek Islands sailing route and we’re trying our hardest to plan a trip back to Europe next summer so we can book a cabin on this exciting new route, and hopefully on Nikola again!

The Neyzen Service

Neyzen Travel & Yachting was established in Bodrum in 1987. Neyzen’s vacations specialize in overland and sea tours with a cultural emphasis and are designed for the discerning traveler. Our company has grown since the early days and now explores the whole of Turkey by land. By sea, we operate an exclusive fleet of 4 boutique gulets, offering luxury yacht charter cruises of the Aegean coastline and Greek Dodecanese Islands. We also run the chauffeur and transfer service Neyzen Car and the all-inclusive Izer Beach Resort in Torba, Bodrum.

Neyzen Travel & Yachting locates accommodation full of character and offering real luxury. We seek out the most distinctive activities and excursions , headhunt the best guides, crews and chefs, always pay attention to the details, and generally dedicate ourselves to providing a completely outstanding travel service.

Neyzen continues as the foremost provider of luxury vacations in Turkey; we are experts in imaginative and unique travel. Our ultimate vision is to share an exceptional insight into and respect for the land and culture of Turkey by custom designing experiences that are enchanting and authentic. Neyzen’s aim is to keep alive that indefinable quality that makes travel truly special, while taking the stress out of route and itinerary planning.

Communication

Everything starts with good communication . Prior to booking, you tell us exactly what you’re looking for and Neyzen then works with your specific interests , time allotments and budget to offer a wide range of options before a final itinerary is confirmed. In short, every itinerary is customized.

Neyzen designs itineraries to suit the ages and fitness levels of your group. In the event of a range of ages within a group, we ensure that the interests of each guest are addressed. Since children often have less staying power than adults, Neyzen adjusts tours so that both children and parents are comfortable . If a guest is relatively less agile, Neyzen personnel can help out throughout touring.

Quality Control

By continually revisiting locations and receiving feedback from guests , guides, yacht crews and drivers, Neyzen is able to consistently track which services meet company standards. All comments are taken very seriously, and Neyzen responds quickly in cases of dissatisfaction, no matter how minor. We take great pride in our high level of returning guests, as well as the exposure we get through word of mouth. In fact, the majority of new guests come through recommendations from those who have already traveled with Neyzen.

Travel Agency Services

Neyzen Tours is a destination management company operating from our offices in Bodrum. As travel agents we provide ticketing services for Turkish Airlines, Atlas jet and Pegasus Airlines. We can arrange charter flights connecting clients from all over the world with destinations all over Turkey. For the best deals on both international and domestic flights to, from and within Turkey please contact us here.

Accommodation

Because the Neyzen staff has personally experienced all of the unique accommodations offered, we are expertly prepared to make recommendations and find the right hotel for each guest. Location is always important, but some guests value a spectacular view above all else, want to be located off the beaten track, or need a family friendly environment. Our up-to-date, first-hand knowledge of accommodation facilities means that we can easily satisfy such preferences.

We know that the culinary experience for guests is a very important part of their vacation, and each year we compile a list of recommended restaurants. As elsewhere in the world, restaurants in Turkey often change, especially in larger cities like Istanbul. To stay on top of the current restaurant trends and also to ensure that last year’s recommendations are still up to par, Neyzen senior staff dines at all new restaurants and re-visits old favorites regularly.

Restaurant recommendations are given according to budget, food interests and the time of year. Food allergies and special dietary requirements can easily be addressed if Neyzen is informed in advance. For those with young families, most restaurants in Turkey and Greece warmly welcome children.

Museums and Archaeological sites

Senior Neyzen staff has personally visited , inspected and experienced every museum and archaeological site that the company recommends. With this knowledge, we can offer the kind of information so vital for customized itineraries .

While some people are passionate about museums and sites and like to devote as much time as possible to visiting them, others prefer briefer trips to such places. Many want a balance of the two. Keenly aware of this, we encourage guests to let us know in advance how much time to devote to touring in this manner, and what kinds of attractions are of particular interest. Options, for example, include archaeological, ethnological, cultural, and religious destinations, multi media art or crafts exhibits. Neyzen also works flexibly with guests once they are in Turkey, adjusting the daily itinerary according to their wishes.

Special Interests

Neyzen carefully reviews current cultural events , such as international theater, classical and jazz festivals, concerts, art and film festivals, museum and gallery exhibitions and sporting events, helping us to meet each guest’s special interests. From cooking classes on board a yacht and photographic expeditions through central Anatolia, to golfing in Istanbul’s Kemer Country or hiking and hot air ballooning in Cappadocia’s lunar landscapes – almost anything is possible. From Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman architecture to ancient and contemporary art, sculpture and jewelry; from archaeology or religious heritage experiences to hands-on carpet weaving; from quilting or textile hand-work to olive pressing… These are some of the many special interests that can be pursued.

Special Events

With our fantastic network of contacts, Neyzen is able to book historical sites and unique venues for novel events for groups from as few as 10 to up to 500 people or more.

Exclusive events we have organized lately include:

  • a private Bosphorus cruise aboard a distinguished historical yacht from a by-gone era of elegance
  • a private booking of Istanbul’s grand Byzantine cisterns for a concert

Museum curators, archaeologists, artists, musicians, dancers and other notable and talented folk can be engaged for special private events. Opening ancient sites after hours, complete with private viewing of excavations, followed by dinner and a live classical recital is just another example of what can be arranged by way of unforgettable experiences .

New Destinations

Turkey continues to develop rapidly . Keeping abreast of changes and experiencing what is new ourselves, allows Neyzen to offer much more than the typical touring of Turkey and the Greek Islands. Much has changed in the past 12 years; significantly, in 2001, Turkey opened 72 new airports providing access to areas that had previously been difficult to visit. As remote areas like Antakya or Mardin became more popular, unique accommodations appeared, usually in the form of beautifully restored historical structures , which we delighted - and still do - in sharing with our guests.

Since 2003 many new museums and galleries have opened in Istanbul , in particular addressing the explosion of interest in contemporary art, and placing the city at the forefront of the art world internationally. In 2005, the site of Zeugma underwent new excavations and shortly thereafter, the world’s most important museum of Roman mosaics opened in Gaziantep. The popular motion picture Troy prompted increased funding for the excavation of the actual archaeological site in 2006; consequently another 15% of city was unearthed, and the results considerably altered the historical profile of this ancient site. Opened in 2009, the new and modern Sakirin Mosque on the city’s Asian side is the 1st mosque to have a female architect and interior designers.

The latest exciting developments for us and our guests to Turkey include the site of Gobekli Tepe , the oldest temple in the world dating to the 11th Century, which opened to the public in 2011. In Istanbul, 2 Ottoman-era Turkish baths, Hürem Sultan in the old town, and Ali Paşa in Karaköy, were recently restored to their former glory. As a coastal destination, Alacati has been a long held secret of wind and kitesurfers, but the old town and its beautiful architecture are now protected and the city is fast becoming the the new place to go. Also, a new Lycian Museum , the 1st in the world, is marked to open 4 months from now in Antalya and promises to become a highlight of our Aegean itineraries.

As Turkey increasingly becomes one of the most desirable travel destinations in the world, Neyzen is committed to keeping a finger on the country’s vibrant pulse. We consistently give our guests the best of what’s new, as well as old, and promise an exciting and unique exploratory experience of this fascinating country.

‘If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul.' - Alphonse de Lamartine

Mighty Byzantine walls , mysterious underground cisterns , majestic basilicas, opulent Ottoman palaces and the glittering Bosphorus strait, lend this cosmopolitan city an aura of magic. Traditions rooted in 2,500 years of history are observed in age-old bargaining techniques in the covered bazaar, the heartfelt hospitality of the local people and the cadences of the muezzin’s call to prayer.

The info below outlines the highlights of touring with Neyzen in Istanbul, where we recommend a minimum 3-day stay . All the experiences featured here can be selected and combined to create the ultimate Istanbul tour in line with your specific interests. Broaden your experience of Turkey by including any other regions of the country or an Aegean yacht charter into your trip.

Accommodation Istanbul - style

Istanbul has been a hotspot for travel since the mid 19th century. The city is filled with unique places to stay, catering from budget options to beautiful design-led boutique hotels and 5-star super luxury. Many leading world hotel chains like the Four Seasons, Kempinski, Shangri-La, Park Hyatt and the Pera Palace Hotel Jumeirah , have also opened exclusive properties in Istanbul’s best locations.

There are essentially 4 districts of choice for accommodation: Sultanahmet, Beyoglu , the hotspot for those-in-the-know Karakoy , and on the Bosphorus . The best way to experience Istanbul is to spend time in 2 of these areas, the most practical being Sultanahmet when you arrive, and either Beyoglu, Karakoy or on the Bosphorus before you depart.

KARAKÖY, GALATA AND TUNEL

Explore Istanbul’s hidden nucleus for urban cool cafes and restaurants. For a true taste of today’s local culture in Beyoglu, abandon the well-trodden tourist promenade of Istiklal Street, and get lost in the cobbled streets of Tunel, Galata and Karakoy. The buzz of the day-to-day life of central Istanbulites is almost tangible in Tunel and Galata; here hang out in small local cafes, or shop at boutiques for the one-off creations of Turkish designers. Wander down to Karakoy for a real insight into the extremes of the city: on the Bosphorus a maze of streets conceals creative coffee shops and restaurants where hip locals gather for work and play; in contrast towards the Golden Horn, you find yourself amidst the throng of the city, where street vendors sell almost anything from jeans to fishing rods, and local fisherman display their daily catch on the waterfront.

Culinary treats punctuating this tour include Namli Gurme Karakoy , a gourmet deli selling a mouth-watering range of cold meats, cheeses, honey, and olives. Next-door Karakoy Gulluoglu offers traditional baklava second to none. Close by are the well-established Lokanta Maya restaurant and the fantastic Karakoy Lokantasi. There are also 12 new design-led and delicious restaurants to sample, all opened in 2014, and more to come in 2015. Continue to Bankalar Caddesi, once Istanbul’s main banking street and indulge at Galata Salt Gallery’s Neolokanta Restaurant , one of Istanbul’s finest.

Cooking Classes

Spice up your trip to Istanbul with Neyzen’s hands-on Turkish cooking classes in the heart of the city’s vibrant old town. Turkish cuisine is the fortunate heir to the rich and diverse culinary cultures of the Ottoman Empire , which spanned the entire Eastern Mediterranean from the Balkans to the Middle East.

Street food tour

During this tour we visit some of the most popular street food vendors in the Beyoglu area, sampling stuffed mussels, Gozleme crepes , fresh and roasted nuts, the famous kebabs and more. Learn about the food, its history and traditions , and be enthralled by stories and anecdotes from the vendors.

Tour of the Spice Bazaar and Fish Market

This guided open market tour begins at the Spice Bazaar. Learn the history behind the market place, the spices and their uses. A lunch stop at the fish restaurant boats moored in Karakoy is followed by a tour of the Fish Market in Beyoğlu. Guests also visit some of the family-owned specialty shops that have been around for several generations.

KadikÖy Market Tour

Unique experiences

Private bosphorus cruise.

Experience magical Istanbul from the water. You will pass the Ottoman fortress of Rumeli Hisar and the opulent Beylerbeyi Palace on the Asian side, while of special interest on the European shore are the Ciragan Palace and the Ortakoy Mosque and Square. Today modern villas intermingle with beautifully preserved old wooden seaside mansions and the Bosphorus shoreline is fringed with inviting fish restaurants and cafés.

KILIC ALI PASA HAMAM

Mimar Sinan built Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı in the late 16th century to serve the Levend marine forces in the Ottoman navy. Famous for its majestic 17m high dome , the Hamam is one of the distinguishing features of Tophane, Istanbul’s harbor district. The Hamam has gloriously re-opened after 7 years of extensive restoration , and promises an experience to remember at the height of luxurious style amidst a breathtaking historical atmosphere and the chance to get pampered in true, Ottoman style.

HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE ON THE PRINCES' ISLANDS

The Princes’ Islands in the Sea of Marmara evolved from a place of exile during the Byzantine era , to a popular destination for visitors to escape hectic city life today. The main feature of any of the Islands is the sound of silence. Horse-drawn carriages and bicycles replace motorized vehicles, making an oases of peace and quiet. Explore the islands’ timeless charm on foot or by a leisurely ride through narrow lanes and streets lined either by untouched pine forest or fine, wooden Victorian cottages.

FATIH, FENER & BALAT WALKING TOUR

Steeped in history, a guided tour on foot through the labyrinthine streets of these untapped, and relatively conservative, neighborhoods on the Golden Horn provides a key insight into understanding Istanbul as a whole. A great many communities and religions have converged here over the centuries, leaving an extraordinary legacy of art and architecture, religious monuments, and gastronomic delicacies . This excellent tour explores these districts and ensures that the secrets of Istanbul, some unforgettable monuments (several included in the UNESCO World Heritage List), authentic restaurants, and the fascinating stories of old and new are not missed.

KARAKOY DISTRICT

Nowadays Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities live side-by-side here in Karakoy, Istanbul’s old commercial port. Many buildings, some dating back 600 years, have been restored and opened as some of the city’s trendiest design-driven hotels, urban cafés, up market restaurants, funky boutiques, contemporary art galleries, and museums. These mingle with original Ottoman Hans, often falling apart, and being used as hardware shops and tradesmen’s workshops. Start exploring the up-and-coming Karaköy at the quay to the east of the Galata Bridge, here getting a fantastic view across to Sarayburnu, the wooded peninsula home to Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque . Venture away from the waterfront to visit the fascinating Yeralti Cami (the Underground Mosque). The presence of more than 15 churches, such as Latin Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Bulgarian, and 5 Jewish synagogues, as well as Greek, Jewish, French, Italian and Austrian schools, reflects Karakoy’s true cosmopolitan character and brings a truly diverse and exciting atmosphere to the area.

BÜYÜK VALİDE HAN

This is an experience virtually exclusive to Neyzen’s guests and offers the great opportunity to explore one of the most important old commercial Ottoman buildings, the 17th century Buyuk Valide Han, rarely entered by visitors. In the northwest corner of the Han, which still operates its small workshops serving the textile industry today, a crumbling stone staircase leads up to the roof, which offers a truly fabulous view of the city. Note that climbing up to the roof is at your own risk, as there aren't any railings on the roof.

GALATA MEVLEVI MUSEUM

Without a doubt the best place to view the captivating Whirling Dervish Ritual in Istanbul, the central hall of this dervish lodge was built in 1491. The oldest of 6 historic lodges remaining in Istanbul, the complex was converted into a museum in 1946. Taking their name from the great Sufi mystic, Rumi , also known as Mevlana, Mevlevis seek a mystical communion with God through the Sema, which involves chanting, prayer, music and dance. Other exhibits include displays of Mevlevi clothing and accessories , a collection of traditional musical instruments, calligraphy and ebru (paper marbling), and the tomb of Galip Dede, the 17th-century Sufi poet whom the street is named after.

His precious and profound creations are one-of-a-kind , hand made and inspired by the historical architecture of Istanbul and many childhood memories. While exploring Istanbul’s Old City, we visit Bicacki’s shop museum and workshop located near the Grand Bazaar .

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE MUSEUM

Neyzen has guest access to the military-run Selimiye Army barracks here where the public museum is also located. The museum is interesting enough, but our exclusive tour of this handsome building with 2.5km of corridors, 300 rooms and 300 windows, is really something else. During the Crimean War the barracks became a military hospital where the famous lady with the lamp and 38 student nurses worked. It was here that Nightingale practiced the innovative and radical nursing methods that history knows her for.

From artisanal carpet and gold merchants to local markets, the legendary Grand Bazaar , one-off chic boutiques, antique shops and high-end designer stores, Istanbul is great for shopping, whatever your budget and quest. Take a Neyzen guide with you as a personal shopping assistant , and we can advise you on the best places to go. There are some areas where this guidance can really come in handy to get the best deals, as well as having someone to translate.

Contemporary Art

Istanbul modern.

Founded in 2004, this vast former warehouse on the Bosphorus is the first private museum to organize modern and contemporary art exhibitions in Turkey. The venue also includes a photography gallery, library, cinema center, café and design store, while the restaurant offers an incredible view of the old city across the water.

GALERI MANÂ

Respected Turkish-American curator Suzanne Egeran helped set up Galeri Manâ in 2011, taking the name from the Turkish word for meaning. Housed in an atmospheric converted 19th century wheat mill, the gallery seeks to represent the vanguard of conceptual contemporary art from Turkey and around the world.

Arter -Space For Art is located in an elegant restored mansion in the vibrant heart of Beyoglu . Since its opening in 2010 the gallery has fast found its feet as an intelligent platform for contemporary Turkish art , encouraging the production of site-specific exhibitions, installations and performances .

Founded in Ankara in the 1980s, Nev combines its space for the new art coming out of Turkey with an extensive art history and catalogue archive . Exhibits vary from understated prints and drawings to experimental sculpture and installations, a truly refined taste being the common denominator.

Located in the well known Misir Apartmani, a beautiful 19th-century apartment block in Beyoğlu , Galerist is one of the city's most popular galleries , and home to the chic rooftop 360 Bar. Over the past decade Galerist has established a strong presence in the international art scene , and is dedicated to introducing Turkish artists to the global art community .

CONTEMPOARY ISTANBUL

The 10th edition of Turkey’s premium art fair runs from November 12-15, 2015 and takes place at Istanbul Congress Center (ICC) and Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC). The fair offers a range of Turkish and international art including painting, sculpture, video works, installation and limited editions from local and international galleries. New to the fair in 2014, was the Plug-In New Media Section, dedicated to showcasing digital art in a 1000 square meters area next to the main exhibition space.

ISTANBUL BIENNIAL 2015

Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) presents Istanbul Biennial 2015 showing Sept 5 -Nov 1. Since 1987, the Istanbul Biennial has defined a hub in Turkey for visual artists and their audiences from all over the world. The 13 previous events have strengthened an exciting network of local and international art circles whereby artists, curators and art critics bring together new trends in contemporary art . According to curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, the 14th Istanbul Biennial 2015, featuring artists Cevdet Erek, Füsun Onur and William Kentridge among others, will reveal a new unconventionality and set out “…looking for where to draw the line, to withdraw, to draw upon, and to draw out.”

Arts and Crafts

We offer a number of handcraft workshops and classes in Istanbul each providing expert private instruction and the chance to get creative in the heart of this inspiring city. We have workshops on the centuries old Ottoman Marbling Ebru technique , a method of aqueous surface design, producing rich patterns and effects similar to marble and other stones on paper, glass or fabric. We also offer a Turkish & Ottoman Calligraphy workshop , which introduces the revered art of forming characters from the Ottoman-Arabic Diwani script. Taught with figurative imagery and an insight into geometric Islamic art, this workshop gives both a both hands-on experience and a fascinating art historical perspective. Other options include a Traditional Turkish Tile & Ceramics class and a workshop on the art of Fine Woodworking with mother-of-pearl inlay.

Jewish heritage

Jews have lived in the geographic area of modern Turkey for more than 2,400 years. In the later Middle Ages, Ashkenazi Jews migrated to the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires supplementing the original Jewish population of Asia Minor. In the late 15th century, the Ottoman Empire invited many Sephardic Jews fleeing persecution in Spain and Portugal to Asia Minor. Despite emigration during the 20th century, modern day Turkey still has a small Jewish population of about 27,000. The major sites of Jewish interest in Turkey are in Istanbul where there are 29 synagogues ,although they are not all practicing or open to the public. These synagogues show how the different waves of Jewish immigrations to Turkey influenced the design of these houses of worship.

Galata is home to Istanbul’s main synagogue, Neve Shalom , a symbol of the Turkish Jewish community since being attacked in 1986 and again in 2003. The only remainder of the original synagogue is the grandfather clock in the foyer, which is still fixed at the time of the first bombing. The Ashkenazi Synagogue features a beautifully designed dome and vibrant interior art.

There used to be many synagogues active in the old Jewish district of Balat , but now only the beautifully renovated Ahrinda and Yanbol Synagogues are in use, and only on Shabbat. Jews from Macedonia originally built the Ahrinda Synagogue, which has been beautifully restored and is noted for its bemah in the shape of Noah’s ark, and a magnificent hanging chandelier in its central dome.

JEWISH MUSEUM OF ISTANBUL

A short walk down the famous winding staircase, Ask Merdiveni (Love Steps), brings you to the former Zülfikar Synagogue , now the site of The Zulferis Museum which was founded in 1992, the first Jewish museum in Turkey . Naim Güleryüzü has been responsible for the vision, renovation and construction of this museum, a testament to 500 years of peace and tolerance in Turkey.
